What modern perfume would ... Emma Bovary wear?
For Emma, perfume was therapeutic. Sometimes, when she felt depressed and lethargic "what then revived her was pouring a bottle of eau-de-cologne over her arms."
As an elegant lady she, of course, used perfumed handkerchiefs.
"... there was never enough cold-cream for her skin, nor of patchouli for her handkerchiefs."
Once, her father-in-law, used up her whole supply of perfume:
"... and to perfume his handkerchiefs he used up his daughter-in-law's whole supply of eau-de-cologne."
So, she liked the smell of patchouli. I imagine her wearing Chance eau de parfum from Chanel. Chance, in French, means "luck". The girl needed some :)
Chance is heavy on patchouli, it also has a strong note of pink pepper, jasmine, iris, musk and a little bit of vanilla.
I also see her using Miss Dior eau de parfum 2012. Patchouli is the dominant note. The mandarin orange and the rose add a pleasant sweetness.

Original Chandan Perfume: A Guide for Connoisseurs
Chandan, or sandalwood, has captivated the hearts and senses of fragrance lovers for centuries. The allure of its warm, creamy scent transcends borders and cultures, making it a timeless choice in the world of perfumery. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about original Chandan perfume, from its unique qualities to how to spot genuine products. If you're ready to deepen your appreciation for this enchanting fragrance, let’s dive in!
Understanding Chandan (Sandalwood)
Origins of Sandalwood
Sandalwood has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. Its origins lie in the tropical regions of India, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. The most sought-after variety is Santalum album, often referred to as Indian sandalwood. The wood and oil extracted from this tree have been revered not just for their delightful fragrance, but also for their medicinal properties and spiritual significance.
Types of Sandalwood
When it comes to sandalwood, different species produce distinct scents and qualities. While Indian sandalwood is the most famous, Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is also gaining popularity for its unique aroma. Each type offers a different experience, and exploring these varieties can be a delightful journey for any perfume enthusiast.
Extraction Process
The process of extracting sandalwood oil is an art form in itself. The wood is harvested, dried, and then subjected to steam distillation, a method that preserves the purity of the oil. This meticulous extraction process is what gives original Chandan perfume its rich, complex scent profile. Each drop is a labor of love, capturing the essence of the sandalwood tree.
The Unique Qualities of Original Chandan Perfume
Scent Profile
What makes original Chandan perfume truly special is its multifaceted scent profile. The fragrance unfolds in layers: the top notes are often fresh and light, giving way to a warm, creamy heart, and finally settling into deep, woody base notes. This evolution on the skin creates a captivating olfactory journey that can uplift your spirit and soothe your senses.
Longevity and Sillage
One of the hallmarks of quality Chandan perfume is its longevity. When you wear it, you’ll notice that it lingers beautifully throughout the day. The sillage—the trail of scent you leave behind—is equally impressive, drawing people in without being overpowering. This balance makes it perfect for both daily wear and special occasions.
Therapeutic Benefits
Beyond its captivating scent, sandalwood has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and aromatherapy. It is known for its calming and grounding properties, making it an excellent choice for relaxation and stress relief. Incorporating original Chandan perfume into your daily routine can elevate your mood and promote a sense of well-being.
Identifying Authentic Chandan Perfume
Characteristics of Quality Chandan Perfume
When selecting original Chandan perfume, it's crucial to know what to look for. Quality Chandan oil is typically a pale yellow to golden color, with a slightly viscous texture. If the fragrance feels thin or has an artificial smell, it's likely not genuine.
How to Read Labels and Ingredients
Take a moment to read the labels carefully. Original Chandan perfumes will clearly state the ingredients, highlighting the use of sandalwood oil. If you see vague terms like "fragrance" or "parfum," it may contain synthetic substitutes, which can dilute the authentic experience.
Common Counterfeits and How to Avoid Them
Unfortunately, the popularity of sandalwood has led to an increase in counterfeit products. To avoid falling victim, purchase from reputable sources, whether online or in-store. Authentic brands will often have a transparent sourcing process and will be proud to share their methods with you.
Top Brands of Original Chandan Perfume
When exploring the world of original Chandan perfume, it's essential to know where to look. While I won't mention competitors, I can assure you that our own line of Chandan perfumes and attars reflects our commitment to quality and authenticity. We meticulously source our sandalwood from the finest growers, ensuring that each bottle captures the pure essence of this cherished fragrance.

How to Wear and Enjoy Chandan Perfume
Application Techniques
To fully experience the beauty of original Chandan perfume, consider your application method. Applying to pulse points, such as the wrists and neck, allows the fragrance to interact with your body heat, enhancing its aroma. You might also consider spritzing some into the air and walking through the mist for a more enveloping experience.
Layering with Other Scents
Chandan pairs wonderfully with other fragrances. You can experiment by layering it with floral or citrus notes to create a personalized scent that speaks to you. This technique not only adds depth but can make your fragrance unique to you.
Seasonal and Occasional Uses
While Chandan is versatile enough for daily wear, it particularly shines during cooler months or special occasions. The warm, creamy notes create a comforting aura that’s perfect for cozy evenings or festive gatherings.
Cultural Significance and Rituals
Chandan in Spiritual Practices
Throughout history, sandalwood has held immense spiritual significance in various cultures. In Hindu rituals, sandalwood paste is often used for blessings and purification. Its soothing aroma can create a sacred space, enhancing meditation and mindfulness practices.
Symbolism in Different Cultures
In many cultures, sandalwood represents purity and tranquility. Whether it’s used in religious ceremonies or personal rituals, the fragrance embodies a deep connection to nature and spirituality, allowing you to engage in meaningful experiences.

Why Suvarna Jasmine Attar is a Luxury Must-Have
When it comes to fragrances, there are those that simply define luxury. Among them, Suvarna Jasmine Attar stands out as an exceptional choice that embodies elegance and sophistication. In this detailed guide, we will explore why Suvarna Jasmine Attar is considered a must-have luxury item, delving into its rich heritage, exquisite craftsmanship, and sensory allure.
Understanding Attar
What is Attar?
Attar, also known as ittar, is a traditional perfume made from natural plant extracts. Unlike commercial fragrances that often use synthetic ingredients, attar is crafted through a meticulous process that captures the essence of nature in its purest form. Historically, attar has been used for centuries in various cultures, particularly in the Middle East and South Asia, for its authentic and long-lasting scent.
Ingredients and Production
The production of attar involves distilling natural ingredients like flowers, herbs, and spices. The process is both an art and a science, where these ingredients are slowly distilled using steam or other methods to create a concentrated essence. The resulting attar is not only aromatic but also rich in therapeutic properties.
Differences from Other Fragrances
Unlike eau de parfum or eau de toilette, which are alcohol-based, attar is oil-based. This means it has a more intense and enduring fragrance. Attars are also typically free from synthetic additives, making them a purer and more natural choice for those who appreciate high-quality scents.
The Allure of Jasmine

Jasmine has been celebrated throughout history for its beauty and fragrance. In ancient cultures, it was often used in religious ceremonies and as a symbol of love and purity. The flower's significance extends to modern times, where it remains a cherished ingredient in high-end perfumery.
Jasmine in Perfumery
In the world of perfumery, jasmine is prized for its complexity and versatility. It blends seamlessly with a variety of other notes, from citrus to woody, and adds depth to any fragrance composition. This makes jasmine an essential element in many luxury perfumes, including Suvarna Jasmine Attar.

Attar vs. Modern Perfumes: What Sets Them Apart?
In the world of fragrances, attar, and modern perfumes stand as two distinct categories, each with its own unique charm and allure. While both are designed to captivate our senses, the differences between attar and modern perfumes are profound, encompassing their composition, production methods, cultural significance, and overall experience. In this blog, we delve into what sets attar apart from modern perfumes, helping you appreciate the beauty of the best attar perfumes and their timeless appeal.
The Essence of Attar
Attar, also known as ittar, is a traditional form of perfume that has been cherished for centuries, particularly in the Middle East, India, and Persia. The word "attar" is derived from the Arabic word "itr," meaning fragrance. Unlike modern perfumes, attar is crafted using natural ingredients through a meticulous process of distillation.
Natural Ingredients and Traditional Craftsmanship
One of the most significant distinctions of attar is its use of natural ingredients. The best attar perfumes are made from flowers, herbs, spices, and other botanical sources. These ingredients are distilled using a traditional method known as hydro-distillation or steam distillation. The process involves extracting essential oils from the raw materials and blending them with a base oil, often sandalwood oil, which acts as a fixative and carrier.
This traditional craftsmanship ensures that attar remains free from synthetic chemicals and alcohol, making it a pure and natural fragrance option. The artisanal process of creating attar is labor-intensive and time-consuming, contributing to its unique and authentic character.
Longevity and Evolution
Attar is renowned for its longevity and the way it evolves on the skin. Unlike modern perfumes, which can sometimes dissipate quickly, attar tends to have a longer-lasting scent due to its natural composition and the absence of alcohol. The fragrance unfolds gradually, revealing different layers over time. This evolution creates a personalized and intimate scent experience, as the attar interacts with the wearer's body chemistry.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
It is often used in religious ceremonies, meditation practices, and traditional rituals. The best attar perfumes are considered sacred and are believed to have healing properties. For instance, in India, attar is used in Ayurvedic practices for its therapeutic benefits. The spiritual connection to attar adds another layer of meaning and reverence to its use.
The Modern Perfume Landscape
Modern perfumes, on the other hand, have evolved significantly since their inception. They are typically composed of a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients, allowing for a vast array of scents that can range from floral and fruity to woody and oriental.
Synthetic Innovation and Variety
The advent of synthetic ingredients has revolutionized the perfume industry. These lab-created compounds mimic natural scents and allow perfumers to craft unique and complex fragrances that were previously impossible to achieve. The use of synthetics also provides consistency and stability in modern perfumes, ensuring that each bottle smells the same and retains its scent over time.
This innovation has led to an explosion of variety in the perfume market, with an abundance of options to suit every preference and occasion. From high-end luxury brands to affordable mass-market products, modern perfumes cater to a wide audience.
Convenience and Accessibility
Modern perfumes are designed for convenience and accessibility. They come in various formats, including eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and cologne, each with different concentrations of fragrance oils. This variety allows consumers to choose the intensity and longevity of the scent based on their preferences.
Additionally, modern perfumes are often packaged in spray bottles, making application quick and easy. The widespread availability of these fragrances in retail stores and online platforms further enhances their accessibility.
Marketing and Branding
The modern perfume industry is heavily influenced by marketing and branding. Celebrity endorsements, glamorous advertisements, and elaborate packaging play a significant role in attracting consumers. Perfume houses invest substantial resources in creating an image and story around their products, adding a layer of allure and desirability.
Choosing Between Attar and Modern Perfumes
When it comes to choosing between attar and modern perfumes, it ultimately boils down to personal preference and the experience you seek. If you appreciate natural ingredients, traditional craftsmanship, and a spiritual connection to your fragrance, the best attar perfumes offer a unique and timeless option. The depth and complexity of attar can provide a deeply personal and long-lasting scent experience.
On the other hand, if you value variety, convenience, and the excitement of contemporary fragrances, modern perfumes offer an extensive range of options to explore. The innovation and creativity in contemporary perfumery ensure something for everyone.
Both attar and modern perfumes have their distinct charms and advantages. While Attar stands out for its natural purity, traditional methods, and cultural significance, modern perfumes shine with their synthetic innovation, variety, and accessibility. By understanding what sets them apart, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your preferences and lifestyle. Whether you choose the best attar perfume or a modern scent, the world of fragrances awaits you with its endless possibilities.

Sneak Peek: What’s Trending in Beauty at Uplink Expo
June 12, 2024
Nancy Trent
Uplink Expo, organized by Beauty Independent, is the premier event where beauty, wellness, innovation, and visionary ideas converge. This dynamic expo is a gathering place for industry leaders, entrepreneurs, beauty wellness enthusiasts, and curious minds, all united by a shared passion for the future of health and wellness. Founders, CEOs, suppliers, retailers, and investors are driving the big beauty brands of tomorrow, collectively advancing the industry on June 20th in New York City. Here are six top trends to watch:
1) Native nurturing
Materials from indigenous lands are gaining traction in the skincare and beauty industry due to their natural efficacy and sustainable sourcing. Traditional ingredients, derived from plants, minerals, and other natural resources, have been used for centuries by indigenous communities for their healing and nurturing properties. Modern skincare brands are now tapping into this rich heritage, incorporating these materials into their products to offer consumers natural alternatives that are free from synthetic chemicals. This trend not only promotes healthier skin but also supports the preservation of indigenous knowledge and sustainable harvesting practices, making it a win-win for both beauty enthusiasts and the environment.
On the show floor: N8iV Beauty is pioneering the use of acorn oil in skincare, drawing on the ancestral Native American wisdom of its founder, Ruth-Ann Thorn. Harvested annually from tribal lands, acorn oil has been used for 23,000 years to restore, rejuvenate, and empower skin with a natural glow. The oil is rich in essential fatty acids, tocopherols, polyphenols, and sterols, which help improve skin health, reduce inflammation, soothe irritations, repair and regenerate cells, and deeply nourish and hydrate. Its trace amounts of tannic acid enhance the absorption of these beneficial properties, delivering better and more lasting results.
2. Fragrances without compromise
Clean and natural fragrances are on the rise as consumers become more conscious of what they apply to their skin and inhale daily. These perfumes, crafted only using the highest quality ingredients, favors transparency and simplicity. As a result, they offer a more wholesome and eco-friendly alternative, often featuring essential oils and botanicals that not only smell divine but also boast therapeutic benefits. This growing preference for clean and natural scents reflects a broader trend towards wellness and sustainability, where people seek products that align with their health values and environmental concerns.
On the show floor: Rosy & Earnest is setting new standards in the fragrance industry with clean, luxurious perfumes. Partnering with award-winning perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer, the brand has achieved the second-ever EWG verified certification in the Edu parfum category. The products are non-toxic and vegan, featuring transparent ingredient lists. This ensures consumers can enjoy unique and sophisticated scents without compromising on their health or the environment.
3. Embracing age
We’re in an era where society’s expectations of aging are being challenged by older women. New and innovative treatments are being created to rejuvenate and revitalize sensitive skin that has endured decades of wear and tear. This trend celebrates the beauty of aging and promotes products that enhance natural features rather than hiding them.
On the show floor: Prime Prometics is a family-run brand that focuses on makeup and skincare for mature women. Initially targeting chemo warriors, the brand has expanded to serve all women over 50, using bioactive nutrients in their cosmetics to heal and rejuvenate the skin. The products, developed with input from a database of 10,000 mature women, include mascaras, lipsticks, and brow tints that not only enhance beauty but also repair cellular damage caused by aging. Additionally, Prime Prometics supports breast cancer survivors, medical frontliners, and combats misinformation about older women.
4. Tanning goes plant-based
Plant-based tanning products are increasingly important for skin health and environmental sustainability. Unlike traditional tanning solutions that often contain harsh chemicals, plant-based alternatives utilize natural ingredients that nourish and protect the skin. These products minimize the risk of irritation and allergic reactions, making them suitable for sensitive skin. Additionally, they often contain antioxidants and vitamins that promote skin health, providing a safer, healthier way to achieve a sun-kissed glow. As consumers become more aware of the benefits of natural ingredients, plant-based tanning products are gaining popularity for their effectiveness and gentleness.
On the show floor: Ella & Jo Cosmetics was created by Charlene Flanagan, make up artist, and Niamh Ryan, make up artists and skin therapist. They are filling a gap in the market for fun and functional products that make every day easier for women. You can glow from head to toe with this collection of tanning essentials that will elevate your skincare routine. Their products are a multi-functional range inspired by plants & wellbeing powered by science. Their products also center around a morning & nighttime skincare regimen, containing a unique USP - incredible ingredients pushing the boundaries of multi-use and incredible skin results, while also delivering a unique sensory experience - relaxation, self-care & calm.
5. So long to synthetics
Plant-based skincare is crucial for maintaining healthy skin and promoting overall well-being. Unlike synthetic products that may contain harmful chemicals and artificial additives, plant-based skincare harnesses the power of natural ingredients like botanical extracts, essential oils, and vitamins. These ingredients are rich in antioxidants and nutrients that nourish, hydrate, and protect the skin. They are also gentler and less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions, making them suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Moreover, plant-based skincare aligns with environmentally sustainable practices, reducing the ecological footprint and promoting a more eco-friendly beauty routine. As awareness of holistic health grows, the demand for plant-based skincare continues to rise, highlighting its importance in achieving radiant, healthy skin naturally.
On the show floor: R&R Skincare is an entirely natural, plant-based skincare brand from Africa, founded on the philosophy of transforming one of nature's purest and richest gifts - shea butter - into elegant beauty products that moisturize and renew the skin. This brand delivers luxury and sings Africa’s ancient beauty secrets for ageless skin, at an affordable price, whilst simultaneously empowering hundreds of Ghanaian women in rural communities through its supply chain.
6. Improving hormone health
Improving hormonal health is vital for women's overall well-being, as hormones regulate numerous bodily functions including mood, energy levels, metabolism, and reproductive health. Balanced hormones contribute to physical and emotional stability, reducing the risk of conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and menstrual irregularities. Unfortunately, there is still so much more research to be done and there are not enough resources for women to incorporate into their daily lives. Addressing hormonal imbalances through a holistic approach involving diet, lifestyle changes, and natural supplements can lead to a more vibrant, balanced life. By prioritizing hormonal health, women can achieve greater vitality and resilience, empowering them to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
On the show floor: Hormone University was created as an educational platform with the mission to improve hormone health such as, menopause, PMS, fertility or menstruation. This brand is here for all the women to break their silence and find relief. The founder was diagnosed with Stage IV Endometriosis in her mid 20s and this condition brought unimaginable pain into her life, leading to five surgeries, infertility, surgical menopause, and numerous other challenging consequences. Frustrated by the lack of specific research, clear information, and natural products that could be applied into her daily life, she decided to embark on a new path. She began talking to hundreds of women and discovered that many shared a common thirst for knowledge and trustworthy products, yet they didn’t know where to begin. After two years of research and hard work, thanks to gynecologic oncologist and pelvic surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, lead scientific advisor to Hormone University, they managed to create a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy giving birth to Glow by HU. Their products are natural hormone balance delivered through your skin.

The Benefits of Using Perfume Oils Instead of Perfumes!
Why are Perfume oils so special?Perfume Oils are long-lastingPerfume Oils have a stronger scentThey have calming and therapeutic propertiesEasy to blend and layer with other perfumes
Ajmal’s Perfume oils are highly concentrated fragrances made with a blend of natural oils. Unlike traditional alcohol-based perfumes like Eau de Parfum, Eau de Cologne, and Eau Fraiche, perfume oils do not contain alcohol or water, which makes them longer-lasting and more potent. They are often considered luxurious due to their high quality and exotic scents. Perfume oils by Ajmal Perfumes USA can be applied directly to the skin or used to create custom fragrances by blending different oils together. Because of their high potency, a small amount of perfume oil can last for hours, and they often have a more complex and nuanced scent profile than traditional perfumes. Perfume oils are available in a wide variety of scents, from floral and fruity to spicy and woody, and they have been used for centuries in many cultures around the world for their therapeutic and aromatic properties. Arabian Mukhallats, Indian Attars, Itr, and other perfume oils have adorned history with beautiful fragrances!
About Ajmal Perfumes USA
Ajmal Perfumes USA is a fragrance company that specializes in creating unique and high-quality scents for both men and women. Ajmal was founded in 1951 in India and has since expanded globally.
We offer a wide range of fragrances, including traditional Arabian perfumes, oud fragrances, and modern western scents. Each fragrance is crafted using premium ingredients and techniques that have been refined over generations. The company is committed to providing exceptional customer service and delivering an unparalleled fragrance experience.
Perfume oils are highly concentrated and contain no alcohol, so they last much longer than traditional perfumes. A small amount of perfume oil can provide fragrance for hours, and some can even last all day.
Because perfume oils are highly concentrated, they often have a more complex and nuanced scent profile than traditional perfumes. This makes them a popular choice for those who want a stronger fragrance.
Many perfume oils contain essential oils, which can have therapeutic properties. For example, lavender oil is often used for its calming and relaxing effects, while peppermint oil can help to invigorate and energize.
Perfume oils are compact and travel-friendly
Because most perfume oils are often sold in small bottles, they are easy to carry with you wherever you go. This makes them a great option for travel or for touch-ups throughout the day.
Arabian perfume oils are perfect for sensitive skin
Unlike Eau de Parfums, Eau de Colognes, and deodorants, perfume oils do not contain alcohol or water, which makes them a good choice for people with sensitive skin. They also tend to be less drying than alcohol-based perfumes.
Perfume oils can be used to create custom fragrances by blending different oils together. This allows you to create a unique scent tailored to your preferences.

How to Apply Perfume Oils for Maximum Scent Impact?
Before applying the perfume oil, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Avoid applying perfume oils to oily or sweaty skin as they can rub off the fragrance and alter its scent.
Pulse points are areas of your body where your blood vessels are closest to the surface of your skin. These points are also where your body generates the most heat, which can help to diffuse the scent. Some common pulse points include your wrists, behind your ears, at the base of your throat, inside your elbows, and behind your knees.
You can also alternatively apply it to your clothes to prolong its scent for a very long time.
Perfume oils are highly concentrated, so you only need a small amount to achieve maximum scent impact. Start with a drop or two and apply it to your pulse points.
You can also layer your perfume oils by applying a different fragrance to different pulse points. This can create a unique scent profile and make your fragrance last longer.
Rubbing the oil into your skin can help to activate the fragrance and release the scent molecules. However, be gentle when rubbing the oil into your skin to avoid causing irritation or ruining the scent.
While perfume oils are highly concentrated, you should still avoid over-application. Applying too much perfume oil can be overwhelming and can actually diminish the scent impact.
Storing the fragrance properly also allows you to experience the properly throughout its shelf life!
By following these tips, you can apply perfume oils for maximum scent impact and enjoy your fragrance all day long. For more information about perfume oils and to know more about us, visit Ajmal Perfumes USA.

Aedes de Venustas (L'Artisan Parfumeur)
Spring is coming, and with it, the age-old compulsion to clean house. We fast, detox, wash windows, file taxes, and swap out everything heavy -- food, clothing, attitudes, and of course, fragrance -- for something healthy, bracing, and light.
To kickstart the renaissance, here's Aedes de Venustas, a fragrance created by Bertrand Duchaufour exclusively for the eponymous NYC boutique. Online or on-site, Aedes serves up its house blend in just about every imaginable form -- votive candles, diffusers, gift sets, room sprays, and oh yes, eau de parfum -- all gorgeously packaged and seizure-inducingly expensive. (Sixty-five dollars for a candle in a jar-- really? No, seriously-- really?*)
A 3.4 oz. (100 ml.) bottle of Aedes de Venustas purchased straight from the source will set you back $185.00-- or $1.85 per milliliter.** (For unit-price comparison, a 1ml. decanted sample from the Perfumed Court costs $5.00-- quite a markup, but it includes parts and labor.) If you prefer to "try before you buy", Aedes' online store offers a mail-order-only deal on perfume samples. Choose seven 0.1 oz (2+ ml) samples from their impressively wide selection for a flat-rate shipping fee of $15.00.*** (Not bad, considering that a six-sample set of 0.3oz "luxury miniatures" by Amouage costs close to $300.)
The bottom line is this: do whatever you have to do to get your hands on Aedes de Venustas. And then wear it. Wear the hell out of it.
Aedes de Venustas is the virtual equivalent of a scent garden near the sea, where the hale aroma of a hundred living herbs comes to you on an ocean breeze rich with salt and negative ions. To arrive at this effect, Duchaufour has gathered for us a therapeutic bouquet garni of dry-soil herbs - thyme, rosemary, lavender, sage, and artemesia - which he presents simply atop a straightforward cedar base. Patchouli is here, too, but not the oily, objectionable kind-- instead, it's already been converted to smoke rising from a censer. The resulting symphony of scent is penetrating yet light, austere yet thoroughly uplifting, and devoid of useless excess. One feels rejuvenated merely by the act of breathing it in.
So why have I only given it four stars? Because I reckon that's sufficient for a fragrance made to be used daily, in an almost utilitarian manner. (Why else would they make it in a room spray?) Aedes de Venustas seems born to be a signature rather than a show-stopper... and that's just fine. Save that last star for the perfumes you hoard like gold, and get happy with AdV-- an affordable**** little luxury for everyday living.
*A price which now (in 2023) seems giddily cheap. **Now $245 and (going by its notes) not the same perfume. ***Dream on. ****Oh god.
Scent Elements: Orange, pink and black pepper, cardamom, rose, iris, cedar, patchouli, coffee, opoponax, benzoin, moss, vanilla, white musk

{Therapeutate // Le Fumoir, Chrys 14, Exotic Flower, Taosi // Evaluations Below}
The first review of a black-owned fragrance brand! So... how did they do?
Let me preface this by saying that many of these fragrances are heavy, dark, earthy scents. If you should know anything about me at this point, dear reader, it’s that this type of scent is not exactly in my wheelhouse. However, I’m always interested in giving something new a sniff in the hopes that my preferences be pleasantly surprised. Therefore, the ratings are based purely on my personal likelihood of enjoying and wearing the scent. This is no commentary on the talent, or lack thereof of any creator.
Enough about me! Time to peek behind the tapestry.
As an overall note, the four samples that I received (with the exception of Taosi) very much seemed like variations on a theme (click the link for some relevant “variations” for background listening). One (and by “one” I mean me) is reminded of the distinctive scent of those stores in the mall that sold incense, wall tapestries, and Grateful Dead merchandise. It’s a seminal experience when malls are the hottest thing going for miles around. Essential smelling, if you will, for a young person.
Before you turn your nose up, recall that Therapeutate makes their fragrances with natural ingredients. Only. Natural. Ingredients. One can not help but to imagine this takes a few cards out of the deck, so to speak.
Le Fumoir 6/10
Are you ready for another one of those hyper-specific cultural touchstones I sprinkle liberally into my narratives?
Mint Chocolate Chip Astronaut Icecream.
The opening of this scent is at once a minty, powdery, musty chocolate blast. Never mind the fact that there is no mint or chocolate in this fragrance. I blame the marjoram and green pepper on convening to deceive me. Well played.
The rest of the fragrance (to my nose) falls into a melange of dark brown, patchouli/medicinal/spiced notes - Tiger Balm, anyone? I don’t smell many of the other floral notes listed besides the spiced flower of carnation.
Chrys 14 6/10
And there is the vase of dried roses my grandmother kept in the alcove next to the image of the Virgin Mary and her rosary. The light was never on in the alcove. Mary’s gaze dark and inscrutable.
Exotic Flower 6.5/10
Enter the burlesque performer’s boudoir. The flames of the gas lamps dance frantically in their sconces. It’s clear the windows have not been opened in weeks. She gives a desultory glance to the chocolates and roses on her desk, as untouched and unloved as she. Ennui has pervaded the mantle, a coating of dust on the clock. The compact is open, and the cheeks powdered for the guest that will never come.
Taosi 8.5/10
First thought - who the heck made a perfume based off of hotpot? I’m talking Sichuan spicy 麻辣 hotpot. You know the one. Well... whatever that opening accord was rapidly morphs into something else.
Second though - I know you.
Who did I know? Who was it that I hadn’t expected to meet?
Nard Himalaya. Anyone who has been to a Hindu temple knows this smell. I was absolutely shocked to find it in a fine fragrance, but I could not help but smile! The smell is like an instant teleportation device to wander through rooms with plaster statues of Hindu gods, stores whose shelves held statues of the same deities, or even markets selling Thums Up cola.
Here is the bottled feeling of night-blooming, summertime visits to an impressive edifice surrounded by lush natural beauty.
The fragrance then deftly transitions into a perfectly legible and pleasant drydown that veers in the dry, spicy/sweet/woody masculine direction. Skillful execution of (to me) a novel idea.

if you take medications that cause sun sensitivity, make sure to be careful about any leave-on products (like lotion or moisturizer) that are citrus-scented! check your ingredients labels, and don’t use things containing (most) citrus essential oils if you know you’re going to be outside because they are phototoxic and can make your sun sensitivity worse!
they’d be listed as “[fruit name] essential oil” or “[fruit] oil”; sometimes the common name is used, and sometimes the botanical name is. if it’s listed as an extract, or if it’s a synthetic fragrance (ingredients list will have “fragrance” or “parfum” listed, usually as the end, and won’t have essential oils listed) then those are safe for everyday use.
an incomplete list of the citrus essential oils that are always phototoxic (botanical name in parenthesis):
blood orange (Citrus sinensis)
clementine (Citrus nobilis)
grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)
lemon (Citrus limonum)
lime (Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus latifolia, and Citrus hystrix, among others)
mandarin (Citrus reticulata)
bitter orange (Citrus aurantium)
tangerine (Citrus reticula L. var. or Citrus tangerina)
an incomplete list of citrus essential oils that are, generally, not phototoxic:
bergamot (Citrus bergamia) can be, but is not always, made free of its phototoxic chemical (bergaptene). I suggest contacting the manufacturer to make sure of the kind they use!
neroli (Citrus aurantium L.)
sweet orange (Citrus sinensis)
this is not a complete list, so please do some research if a citrus oil isn’t listed here! and please, when doing research, never ever ever trust sites selling citrus oils as ~therapeutic~ because they don’t know shit. look for scholarly information, or information from suppliers that sell essential oils for using in soap or bath/body products -- there’s some pretty strict requirements in most places on labeling bath and body products, so those suppliers need to be able to provide the information needed to correctly label a final product made with their ingredients.

Gute Verstecke - schlechte Verstecke

Therapeutate Parfums
Rodney Hughes, founder of Therapeutate Parfums, was one of the most engaging and inspiring people I feel I’ve talked to in a long while. Breaking from tradition of what typically falls under the “fashion” moniker, he is the founder of Therapeutate Parfums, and in general is a master of scent. I loved his presentation from start to finish, and it was something that really resonated with beyond just a professional level.
As a personal believer in the power of ritual and spirituality, I was more than fascinated to hear the anthropological history of scent as well as the powerful capabilities it holds for healing. Rodney Hughes was incredibly well versed in these topics, especially being an anthropologist, professor, and highly educated parfumier. Hearing his story of using essential oils and his own concoctions to heal, in addition with yoga and meditation, his own body and mind was something I was a bit surprised but nevertheless really exciting to hear.
When it comes to the fashion world, my biggest fear is that it’s a career path that might go against some of the things I personally find to have the most value in life. To be frank, I’ve sometimes wondered if it’s a field that’s really a good fit for me at all. I’m afraid of becoming disillusioned, of losing my compassion or connection to nature, of becoming alienated from myself. However, talking to Hughes genuinely did completely broaden my horizons and bring me a sense of understanding that the future is not so constrictive and that the fluidity and connections I value most are still possible. It was a message I really need to hear, especially in a city where it can sometimes be very easy to get lost. To have an adult that is successful both professionally and spiritually, with a business that’s a direct extension of their passion, was very reaffirming.
The visit consisted of mostly a lecture-style talk on the history of perfumes, the power of scent, and Hughes’s professional background. He worked in menswear for a large number of years before eventually turning his passion for essential oils into an actual perfume business, after studying independently and even in the South of France, in the “perfume capital” of Grasse.
In his travels, he’s been afforded the opportunity to go far and wide. Studying in France and interacting with the local wildlife, to Italy, to Egypt, to Asia--he’s really smelled it all. I loved hearing about his adventures because it seemed like a much less constrictive view of what a career can be. In terms of competition, Hughes’s price point places him slightly below a lot of the high luxury brands but also above mass-market. His competition is more like smaller, similarly natural brands such as Phleur and Pour Le Monde.
The technicalities of the perfume business were a world I did not quite expect. I don’t often wear perfume (that will probably change now), but I do have some experience with using essential oils and incense for my space. Essential oils are a concentrated scent directly distilled from the plant or source. They are made only directly from natural materials. However, for the parfums and eaus, they are distinguished based off of how much they are diluted. From most to least diluted are eau de cologne (2%-6% concentrated perfume oil), eau de toilette (5%-15% concentrate), eau de parfum (15%-20% concentrate), and parfum (15%-40% concentrated). With these variations in smell come variations in potency, longevity, and scent profile.
As for me, I usually have kept it simple, using a black amber and vanilla lotion. I also like to use essential oils in a diffuser or directly on my body as well. After the lesson, though, I think I’ll probably become a customer of Therapeutate. I loved trying the different scents of rose and jasmine. Out of the perfumes, my favorite was Royal Water, which stayed on me all day. I think I’ll be coming back to it.
