Welcome, my dear humans to this... rambling?
Yes, I think that´s probably it. I´m just going to analise the Good Omens Season 2 Opening, talk about a few things that caught my attention, do some innacurate predictions and probably make more questions that are not gonna be solved (not even when the season actually gets released).
That being said, I apologise for tha will I´m about to write. But I had nowhere else to write it, so bear with me, okay?
Okay, we begin with a sequence pretty similar to the opening for the first season. Where´s this? I wonder.
But there´s two things that inmediately caught my attention, as Crowley and Aziraphale begin their particular procession across the fields.
The first one, there´s a person walking with a box on their hands. That same box has a couple of arrows signaling upwards and I can tell it´s also the same symbol we saw on at least one of the promotional posters of GO S2. So it´s probably the thing Gabriel had to deliver, if we go with theories plus what was said in the sneak peeks.
The second thing here... Why are here so many goats? Is this a hell reference?
So now we set the goats on fire because why not, and there´s a building on the top right that gives me ancient roman vibes (nevermind me guys, the clear thing here is that we´re soon all going to hell and more people will join the charade).
We keep going to a cementery now with people following the angel and demon and there´s a few tombstones with eyecatching things written on them.
"Jane Austen", says in one and I wonder why.
"Here lies the former shell of Beelzebub", in another (which clearly makes reference to the fact they changed the actress for that part).
"Everyday", in reference to the song.
And also "Here lies Adam"...
Wait, Adam? What the actual f-
Anyway, so now they finally descend to hell and I can just tell by the chair and computer set in there what whoever has that administrative job is not getting paid enough for this shit.
Back up in the Earth I´m finally able to spot Muriel (sorry guys, I´m real shit to spot characters in these things) and we´re clearly in the middle of World War II, as you can see by the Winston Churchill signs and all the destructive ambience very fit for that historical period.
Now, what I wanted to talk about was the movie that´s being announced, "Stairway to Heaven". I´m going to leave down here the summary because I think it might be interesting:
"Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, pilot Peter Carter's plane is damaged and his parachute ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures it is curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the U.S. Army Air Forces, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mix-up in heaven. They couldn't find him in all that fog. By the time his "Conductor" catches up with him twenty hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate."
So we got a miracle, a romance and heaven and hell involved in conflict... Does it sound familiar to you?
As we keep walking rabbits start to fall from the sky and I feel as we approach the theater the time has come for Aziraphale to do his so much awaited magic show.
So, there´s a few things to point out here as well.
For starters, the posters of The Ladies of Camelot (that I´m guessing are the showgirls), those same ladies joining the procession and... have you noticed this is the first time in these openings where Aziraphale is not walking with Crowley but joining him later at the stage, dressed as magician?
And so here goes one of my crazy theories: what if the scene in the trailer where we see Aziraphale surprised at the theatre is because he´s surprised Crowley arrived? Surely we also see a whadow before him and it could also be something completely different and scary... But then again, if what Aziraphale is seeing at that second is real bad stuff, why are the showgirls in the background looking amused?
The theater curtain opens and we get this scene when, again for the first time, Crowley and Aziraphale fly together. Like, literally together, not one after the other as until now.
Wasn´t Crowley proposing to run away to another galaxy together last season? (ah, of course they´re not going to do that now, they got things to do on Earth).
But I´m hopeful we can see where these people were before the beginning of times, before the Eden, when Crowley was still an angel and helped creating galaxies. I read somewhere a theorie that he might be Raphael or (and I thing this is more plausible) someone close to Raphael. So yes, we´ll see where this goes...
Back on Earth we can see Crowley and Aziraphale sitting together on the bookshop roof and, have I mentioned since the space thingy now are raining hearts? What is this? And who was the genius who thought putting "Give me coffee or give me death" to a coffee shop was a good idea? (ah, we all know this and we love Neil for it, just saying).
Anyway, I´m so glad to see the Bentley again. And all those discs... Will it be so important the constant repetition of the song Everyday? Why? And had it something to do with the fact Crowley´s car has a similar problem and no matter what CD he puts it always plays a Queen song?
People´s announcing the "Second Coming" which could very well be a reference of Season 2 and we don´t need to panic yet.
But there´s a lot of elevators here, with angels inside, so we can fairly guess it´s time to go to heaven (and it´ll probably be the last stop).
But before that, and notice that no one in this procession uses an elevator, they get to this cinema where "The Arrival" is screening.
Could it be a reference of the movie of the same title or just a hint because the first episode of this season is titled like that? I´m gonna go for this last theorie, because it makes more sense to me.
The same symbol (arrows pointing upwards) that were in Gabriel´s box are now here in the screen...
Finally, all these people get to heaven not by the usual system (the elevators) but by some stairs and under it there´s a lot of stuff piled that I´m not going to analise because I basically blind at this point (my fault, don´t cancel me).
Can I guess here there´ll be more conspiracies with heaven involved?

I am Sitting under the darkening summer sky drinking irish breakfast tea smoking winston menthol 100s, until we move into our apartment i will probably continue smoking constantly because it makes me feel like i have a forcefield around me, like a foothold in the constantly shifting anonymity of the house i’m living in right now. I think this tumblr page is serving a similar purpose. It is july 7, 8:55pm, i can hear some fireworks echoing far off. I got off of work at 9am, woke at 7pm or so. Bowl of oatmeal and instant espresso. I haven't been able to listen to much other than Advance Base for the past week, owen's lyrics instill in me the greatest gratitude for the incomprehensible size of life, the multitudes of lives happening all simultaneously and the even greater multitudes of shapes those same lives will take on in the future. The shapes my own life will take on, the shape it is now. All of these stories of melancholic loss and change, families and friends, relationships that don't have any easy label. These albums give me so much gratitude for my life and so much sweet, quiet excitement for the future, the places i will live, the people i will meet, the loves that will come and go (or maybe arrive and stay forever). I'm three weeks into my new job, it is becoming monotonous, this isn't a bad thing right now. I think i will value this time greatly in the future, and that makes me value it much more right now. Most worknights i dream of the future and of the past. I think about my old girlfriend, what she is to me now, try to get a three-dimensional view of her place in me. I think of my friends who i love and will probably love more in the future once i am more settled. I think of travel, of going to chicago alone later this year. Maybe i'll fly out for an advance base show if it lines up, i've been wanting to see him since i was 17. After the show, or on the other nights i'm there, i'll go to a bar that i'll find on google maps, one in the university area, i remember walking around there when i was 15 or so, i'll bring a book, i could see something by barbara comyns or muriel spark hitting nicely there, or maybe something more serious. Maybe then i'll read iris murdoch. It is silly to say but i dream of meeting someone there, a new chicago person, somehow we'll hit it off and talk for a long time and be moved by each other. Maybe they're there with friends and we'll all be drunk and laughing and i will lose the handle on reality in the way that only sudden and intuitive social connections can feel. Isn't everyone in a city that is not their own always quietly dreaming of things like that? The last time i was in chicago was with my old girlfriend. It was her birthday, her phone broke and it ended up being sort of messed up but if i remember correctly we had a very nice time all the same. Chicago is my land of dreams, going there to visit family when i was young, going there when i was falling in love with my old girlfriend in the summer of 2017. I was still roaringly medicated then so i can't remember all of it, but there are splashes of walking by the university, and seeing family on some strange farm in michigan. I remember the gray skies and greenery. I remember feeling life expand. There are some other things. i remember thinking of her. Off chicago. At work i dream of the places i will live in the future, of the apartment or house i'll be moving into in a few months (it may come sooner than expected). I dream of setting it up, making it feel serene and exactly perfect for me right now. I will probably be making more money by then, i have these images in my head of different perfume bottles, from tea rose to varying comme des garcons, surrounding the base of an antique lamp (i keep seeing beautiful, inexpensive lamps at antique stores) on a small round dark wooden table. I see a bedframe low to the ground with a mattress in white bedclothes. The way it will all smell, the mess of incense and perfume and whatever candles i'm into by then.
I dream of the cities and towns i will live in. Will i return to new york? The question is always there, but i have very few ideas of what it would look like. The thought can make me feel powerless, the way new york did during my month there this year. But i know to trust the expansiveness and unpredictability of experience. Perhaps if i begin bartending, then such places will open themselves to me, both in expense and in feeling. I will be older. I could go on forever. There is always so much to dream of. I do not know why i have been writing so much on this site lately. But when i begin to feel lost and deflated, it feels very good to come here and write it all out. The screen door just slammed, someone is home. I will go have another cigarette and maybe more tea.

Community observes 83rd commemoration of Rhythm Night Club Fire
Charnecia Green awarded $1,000 scholarship
NATCHEZ, Miss. -- This year’s 83rd commemoration of the Rhythm Night Club Fire included a $1,000 scholarship, the unveiling of a monument listing the names of the fire’s victims, and a message by Mayor Dan M. Gibson, who served as the guest speaker.
The event took place on Saturday, April 22, at The Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum, at 5 St. Catherine St. The museum tells the story of the fire that killed more than 200 people, including Walter Barnes and members of his band on April 23, 1940.
About 100 people gathered for the commemoration, which is held each year by Monroe and Betty Sago, the owners and operators of the museum. The theme this year was “Mission Possible.”
The program began, as it has for the past 15 years, with the siren blast of a fire engine from the Natchez Fire Department. The engine blew its horn three times.
Betty Sago said the day’s program was held to honor the 209-plus victims that died in the club fire in 1940, as well those who survived that “went on with their lives and made a life for themselves, even though they carried a burden for a number of years.”
Betty said that she and Monroe decided years ago to become “the conduit to help these people tell their stories over the years.”
During the ceremony, the Sagos awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Charnecia Green, a student of Natchez Early College at Co-Lin, who plans to attend Alcorn State University School of Nursing in Natchez. The scholarship was made possible in part by Magnolia Bluff Casino and Hotel, which donated $500 to the museum, with a request for it to be matched.
“I think it’s a great and wonderful thing that the Sagos got going here, and we want to be a part of it,” said Willie Minor, assistant manager for Magnolia Bluff, as he presented the check to the Sagos for the scholarship program.
In his presentation as guest speaker, Mayor Gibson acknowledged the work and the passion of the Sagos, as well as the important place their work holds in the city’s history.
“Where we are, we are sitting (and) we are standing on sacred ground,” Gibson said. “We are here in the midst of Natchez history, and this history is truly amazing. Today is such a beautiful testimony to the love in our city and the love that the Sagos have for this site and for those who perished on this site 83 years ago and for their descendants, their family members who are still affected by this tragedy that happened in our city.”
Gibson said that some other structure could have been erected on the site at 5 St. Catherine Street, the site of the museum, and the story of the fire could have been forgotten, were it not for the Sagos.
“Because of these two, this has been a mission possible from day one,” Gibson said. “And because of them, it has brought people here from all over the world to share in the story of what happened here and what should never be forgotten here. In addition to that, they have made a way for countless young people to work here to serve here and also to receive scholarships here.”
Gibson said the work of the Sagos must not go unnoticed. “…Let it not go unnoticed that their story here and the Rhythm Night Club story here, can be an inspiration to us in other parts of our city,” he said.
Gibson’s presentation was followed by the unveiling of the monument that features 209 names of the people who perished in the fire.
Participants in the ceremony included Latonya Sago, who served as program guide and Muriel Vivians, who served as hostess. Pastor Byron K. Sago provided the opening prayer and Ana Barfield opened the ceremony with a song. Linda Williams and Asia Reynolds also provided songs, as did Lawrence R. Winston.
Maysa Vivians shared a reading of “How to Become a Good Friend.” Wilbert Whittley, Natalie Lyles, and Kaitlyn Hayes, assisted with the door prizes. Linda Birsong, Tremeka Ford, Martha Gooden, Kathy Lyles, and Linda Williams assisted with the refreshments.

Shine (1996)
Recently, I read about Geoffrey Rush accepting the role of an older Groucho Marx in an upcoming biopic. It made me want to revisit the film that won him an Oscar and made him a worldwide sensation. Scott Hicks’ 1996 film “Shine”, like fellow Oceania director Jane Campion’s “An Angel At My Table”, tells an amazing true story about an individual overcoming the obstacles of mental illness and making it out on top.
“Shine” is the story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott. As a teenager (Noah Taylor), he excels as a wunderkind musician, winning prizes and the admiration of fans. But David’s life isn’t rosy, he lives under the ruling thumb of his tortured Holocaust survivor father Peter (Armin Mueller-Stahl), who overprotects David and isolates him from the outside world. When he’s given a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy in Music in London, Peter forbids David to go, which he does. Disowned, David pushes himself to be the best piano player under the stern tutelage of Cecil Parkes (John Gielgud), but all the pressure builds up and David is led into the throes of mental illness. The second half shows older David (Rush) rebuilding his once shattered musical prospects with the help of unlikely strangers, including an astrologer named Gillian (Lynn Redgrave).
“Shine” was released as part of the Australian/New Zealand wave of indie films that made an impact on American audiences in the early to mid 90s and along with the aforementioned “Angel At My Table”, “The Piano”, “Muriel’s Wedding” and “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, “Shine” is one of that region’s cinematic gems. The life of a tortured soul that the rest of the world never heard of is given such flesh and blood. In under two hours, a first time viewer starts out not knowing who David Helfgott is or his claim to fame. By the end of the film, not only do you learn his history, but even want to do research to find out more about Helfgott the musician, Helfgott the patient and Helfgott the child of the Holocaust. The biopic is such that the filmmaker has to honor its subject and make him into someone fascinating and relatable. Scott Hicks does that with David Helfgott’s life story and so much more. I believe that if this film had not existed, or it barely made it out of Australia, Helfgott would be some obscure figure that no one gave a damn about.
One would expect in a small scale biopic like this to have the lead actor be the centerpiece and the other actors act more as scenery, which was my reaction to the Gary Oldman biopic about Winston Churchill “Darkest Hour”. “Shine” has one of the best assembled casts of recent years. The two Davids, Geoffrey Rush and Noah Taylor are phenomenal in their own different ways. Rush perfects David’s schizophrenic speech patterns, body movements and child like qualities, without overdoing a single thing. Taylor excels at the gradual decline into mental illness with a loss of lucidity in his speech, a very subtle characteristic. John Gielgud proved that at 90 years of age, he can seem energetic at heart. As Cecil Parkes, he’s a breath of fresh air in an old body and you wouldn’t think he was any older than 75. Lynn Redgrave as Gillian, while brief, is the film’s heart tugging point. Her selflessness and devotion to David is beautifully conveyed without bordering on schmaltz. But the film has a performer that’s on an even playing field with the Oscar winning performance of Geoffrey Rush.
Armin Mueller-Stahl’s Peter Helfgott, a performance that should have netted the then 66 year old an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He is a male version of the Pink Floyd song “Mother” come to life, an emotionally tortured man still bearing the scars of the Holocaust, taking his combined anger and love out on David. Mueller-Stahl not only is excellent as Peter, he doesn’t seem like he’s acting at all. The scene when Peter is comforting David in his bed and clutching him, you cannot fake that overprotection, it seems so natural and effortless. When Peter hears David on the radio, he sheds a single tear. Again, you can’t fake it. The fact that Mueller-Stahl would lose the Oscar to the overrated Mr. Show me the Money, Cuba Gooding Jr., shows how lazy the Academy voters really are in analyzing the merit of an Oscar win.
“Shine” was a standout in the 1996 Oscar season, securing several awards for Geoffrey Rush, including the Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe. Mueller-Stahl didn’t come out empty handed, securing a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor, at least they saw what Academy voters did not. It would lose the majority of the awards to the unstoppable “English Patient” which swept just about every awards show that year. Nonetheless, with a wide release, a first rate cast, and an excellent portrayal of its figure, “Shine” is an indie masterpiece full of cinematic beauty and good hopes.
10/10

Books I’ve read so far this year
Which hasn’t been many compared to the past two years because I wasn’t seeking to hit a high number this year.
The Fifth Season - N.K. Jemisin (Fantasy)
The Hammer of God - Arthur C. Clarke (SF)
Cetaganda - Lois McMaster Bujold (SF)
Ross Poldark - Winston Graham (Historical fiction)
The Power of the Dog - Don Winslow (Crime)
1632 - Eric Flint (SF)
Yondering - Louis L’Amour (Fiction/Short stories)
All Systems Red - Martha Wells (SF)
Binti - Nnedi Okorafor (SF)
Artificial Condition - Martha Wells (SF)
Pawn of Prophecy - David Eddings (Fantasy)
Kris Longknife: Mutineer - Mike Shepherd (SF)
Rogue Protocol - Martha Wells (SF)
Reach for Tomorrow - Arthur C. Clarke (SF/Short stories)
The Collapsing Empire - John Scalzi (SF)
A Far Cry From Kensington - Muriel Spark (Fiction)
The Magician’s Guild - Trudi Canavan (Fantasy)
I’m aiming to add To Kill a Mockingbird and possibly Andy Weir’s Artemis to the list before year’s end.
It hasn’t been a good year for my fantasy reading as the slump not only continues, but has gotten worse. I also haven’t read any mysteries this year and Power of the Dog is the only crime novel I’ve read. My reading habits are weird and I can never tell what I’ll want to or not want to read from year to year.
