Black Wolf by Kathleen Kent is a crime-fiction/spy thriller that takes place in the 90's, when the USSR is starting to break up. "Melvina Donleavy discovers a rare talent growing up. She is a super-recognizer. She can remember any face after seeing it once. She is recruited by the CIA and sent with a team to Byelorussia to seek out some Iranian scientists looking to buy Russian nuclear technology. Mel struggles to stay unnoticed but the head of the KGB knows something is going on with her team. And she's attracted the attention of a serial killer. Mel wonders if her first mission will be her last." This book is part spy thriller. Think Tom Clancy with a female MC. And it's a serial killer crime fiction story. There is some overlap in the story. Kent's killer is pretty terrifying - operating in plain sight and she uses him for story resolution. I wish a little that that had been a seperate book. Just a personal preference The story moves quickly, staying mostly in Mel's head. Her ability is unusual but many readers will have something similar, just not to this extreme. It's nice to revisit the Cold War spy game. Entertaining read from Kent. This book was amazing! As I continue to think about all of the details after finishing this book I keep making connections to different things,and am blown away by the level of detail and layers that make up this terrifying tale. Zoje Stage asks her readers to confront the most basic things that make us feel scared, but also to confront the evils we know that should scare us if we would only listen or pay more attention. This book takes what she started with a terrifying child character in her novel Baby Teeth and turns the level of feeling out of control and blind terror to a new level. This is a book that you won’t be able to put down, but will also be tempted to throw across the room out of fear. Read after dark at your own risk. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper is crime fiction that takes you behind the curtain of celebrity scandal and bad behavior. "Mae is a black bag publicist. Her job is not letting the good news out, but keeping the bad news in. She works for one of the most sought-after crisis PR firms in LA. They protect the rich and powerful by any means necessary. Her boss claims to have some information that could be life-changing for both of them but he is gunned down in a "random" attack before he can tell her. Mae starts looking into what it could be and soon finds herself up against someone who is only whispered about. She must make a choice about how far she is willing to go." Harper paints a vivid picture of how far the rich and powerful in entertainment are willing to go to maintain the staus quo - no matter how depraved or criminal. Money or the promise of money talks. Lots of morally grey in the pages. The story comes from two POVs - Mae and Chris, who works for a security company. They are former colleagues that find themselves working the same issue. They join forces trying to find the truth and save a life. There are several gruesome moments and an unexpected ending. Harper does a nice job leading you to one ending and pivoting to another. Two Brads in this story. One is dead from OD and the other is firebombing homeless camps. #bradscantcatchabreak An interesting, well-written story from Harper. Thank you so much to @mulhollandbooks and @netgalley for the ARE of The Chain by Adrian Mckinty! Wow was this book intense, and by far my absolute worst nightmare as a parent.

This book will have my anxiety levels kicked up a few notches for a bit. It is hard to imagine what you would do if you were put into this unthinkable situation. I really loved the present day storyline of the parents who were caught in the chain trying desperately to get their children back. The backstory of the people behind the whole operation at times seemed a bit far fetched but not to the point of not being entirely unbelievable. One of the things that I found most disturbing was the after effects of the kidnapping experience on the family. The book is definitely a nail biter and any parents worst nightmare.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
