Portrait of a Ladakhi Mountain Goat [Changthangi*]
India, Mughal dynasty, c.1601-25
Opaque watercolor, ink, gold on paper
37.9 × 25.6 cm (14 7/8 × 10 1/8 in.)
The Art Institute of Chicago 1919.944: https://www.artic.edu/artworks/76868/portrait-of-a-ladakhi-mountain-goat
🆔 “The Changthangi [aka Changpa, Ladakh Pashmina, Kashmiri] is a breed of cashmere goat native to the high plateaus of Ladakh in northern India. It is closely associated with the nomadic Changpa people of the Changthang plateau….The intense cold of the region causes the goats to grow a thick undercoat, which is harvested to produce the fine pashmina grade of cashmere.”

Two golden orioles, painted in the 1750s, in West Bengal India, with watercolour on paper. The artist is unknown, and the painting is now in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in the United Kingdom.
From the colouring, these are male golden orioles (the females are green). The black stripe around the eyes tells you that these are Indian golden orioles (the Eurasian variety doesn't have this marking). They breed in central Asia, and fly down to south India and Sri Lanka for the winter. These are secretive, woodland birds; you don't always see them, but you'll hear them.

Scene featuring the slaying of a dragon from the Hamza-Nama by the fantastic 1500s Mughal-era painter Daswanth / Dasavant 🧡 (b 1560s- d 1580s)
https://myasianartblog.blogspot.com/2016/07/daswanth-mysterious-mughal-painter.html?m=1 👇🏽
“At least Daswanth’s skills may be appreciated in the Hamza-nama, for example in the image below depicting the messenger Umar slaying a dragon. The wonderful colours of the dragon, and the way the nervous onlookers at the top seem to be almost tumbling over the rocky cliff, may help to explain Abu’l Fazl’s high regard for Daswanth. But until we see the full glory of the Jaipur Razm-nama, we may never know for sure how great an artist he was.”

Speaking my truth I kind of rock with him like ok religious reforms and decentralizing the power of nobles over residential and agricultural lands (cause I'm def sick of iqtadar shenanigans) !! He is definitely more awesome than his pops .. does anyone else notice that there's that one painting that websites will use for EVERY Mughal emperor as if they didn't all have prolific court artists☠.
