For years this has been my favorite song of all time and I must have already known that they got this unbelievable recording on the first take but I guess I forgot until I saw a tweet just now that reminded me. RIP Steve Albini and also goat Jason Molina 🦉

I've finally been reading Erin Osmon's biography on Jason Molina these last few days; not really sure why I'd put it off for so long other than for fear of reading two hundred pages about one of my favourite guys and his notoriously fraught final decade, but it's an incredibly well-researched and consistently engaging document about the man. This one's my pick of the many strong nuggets contained within: his grasp on his whole deal as an artist was clearly very strong.

ive recently gotten in a bigger way into jason molina's music, through remembering steve albini as well (r.i.p.).

its kind of staggering how enormous molina's output was in the brief timeframe he was active, and for how tragically short we had him on this earth.

his poetics are nothing short of aspirational to me; these words are like a veil. his performance of that poetry is crushing.

its probably a problem that ive looped this track 7 times today, now. i have to share it, though.

Let's talk about The Old Black Hen, sung by country singer Lawrence Peters. The album version includes and incredibly deep and powerful vocal performance with trembling slide guitars, honky tonk pianos and ghostly feminine backing vocals.

The demo version is just Molina and his electric guitar. His version is much more personal, as we can hear Molina's signature shaky voice speaking of "the bad luck lullabies"
