Problematic Femslash Ship Tournament - Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
J7 - Kathryn Janeway x Seven of Nine (Star Trek Voyager) VS. Muachina - Mualani x Kachina (Genshin Impact)
Info and propaganda under cut! This will not be spoiler-free.
Problematic elements for J7:
Age gap, position of authority, relationship sometimes construed as maternal
Problematic elements for Muachina:
Large age gap
--
Propaganda for J7:
Back when the show was airing, there was a famous j/7 fanfic in which Seven was recaptured by the Borg and Janeway gave up her ship to infiltrate the Borg cube alone because she couldn't let Seven go but she couldn't risk her ship and her crew. Not a year later, the official episode Dark Frontier aired, in which Seven was recaptured by the Borg… and canon Janeway absolutely did risk her entire ship and crew to get Seven back. They challenge each other in interesting ways, with different kinds of experience and knowledge so that the balance isn't completely lopsided, and also some things they both have to learn together.
Propaganda for Muachina:
theyre just really cute. kachina looks up to mualani as a role model, and mualani in turn is an incredibly good friend to her. they have lots of playful banter and genuinely heartfelt moments. if it werent for the age gap i feel like this would be so much more popular

Kinich and you started dating around 5 months ago, and ever since then, you wanted to keep it a secret because you didn't know how to explain it to the others.
Its been 5 months though, when will you tell the others?
Besides, Kinich has offered to tell them for you, but you just felt too embarrassed to do so, so he might as well leave it be until you're comfortable. After all, you're his partner.
Lately, Kinich has noticed you haven't been paying much attention to him, so everytime whenever he can't spread his love for you, he gets a little annoyed.
"Cmon, Kinich— you're so pathetic! Stop sulking before ya'lose all of your balls!"
"Shut up, Ajaw." With a snap of his fingers, Ajaw gets sent to the sky, being sent to his timeout.
Kinich sighs as he finishes off his commission and walks off.
He finally sees you, walking to his tribe while humming softly with your hands behind your back, however, they're in public so he can't help but feel a little sting in his chest.
"Y/N." Kinich called out for you, you turned around and waved enthusiastically.
"Hi Kinich! I was just about to look for you." You say as he approaches you.
He walks beside you as you yap your mouth off to him. He wants to hold your hand so badly, he just brushes his hand against yours.
As you and Kinich make it to the top, you still talk to Kinich as he listens to you carefully.
"Is that Y/N? Y/NNN!!!" You heard an eager voice call your name, and you turn around to see Paimon, Lumine, Mualani, and Kachina.
"Huh? Oh hey guys!" You run over to them immediately leaving Kinich on his own. He couldn't help but feel that same sting clench his chest again.
"Hi Mualani! Long time no see huh?" You asked her, she eagerly agreed too as you guys had girl talk... and then there's Kinich.
Kinich noticed that recently whenever he was with you, or about to give you a small kiss, someone always had to come and interrupt you guys. Whether it'd be a friend of yours, or a stranger.
He couldn't help but just stand there for awhile and contemplate. He couldn't help but feel that stinging feeling come back.
Was he jealous? No, no, of course not. The calm and collected Kinich would never, he would never let this stupid emotion take over him right here, right now. He's much more mature than this, he would nev—
"Oh? We should visit by sometim—" you were cut off as you felt arms wrap around your waist tightly, and nuzzling their head in the crook of your neck.
"Huh?"
"Eh?"
There was a long silence.
Kinich pressed a soft kiss on your neck as he kept his head hidden in your neck.
"My love," Kinich mumbled in a low voice."
"Wait— you're dating Kinich?!" Mualani was the first to yell that out loudly as some people nearby looked at them.
Lumine covered Kachina's eyes as she asked, "wait huh? What happened?"
"SHES DATING HIM??" Paimon screeched.
"Hold on, we never knew you guys were dating! How long have you..." Mualani paused and noticed your face was bright red and completely frozen.
Kinich looked up at them and answered her question. "We've been dating for about 5 months." Kinich couldn't help but feel a little guilty after breaking his promise with you, he felt bad because his jealousy took over.
He continued to leave his head nesting in the crook of your neck.
"M'sorry, my love." Kinich mumbled in a low voice.
Paimon waved a hand in front of your face, yet you showed no response.
"I—I, uh... um." The tips of your hands felt shaky and a wave of embarrassment washed over.
"How come you never told us, Y/N?" Mualani asked with a worried smile, you were so red you looked like you had a fever.
"It— I uh, I didn't know how to say it." The redness still bloomed all over your face.
"Trust me, it's easy." Kinich said.
"wh—wait hold on!" Kachina removed Lumine's hands from her face and saw them being all cuddly and close.
"If you guys are dating for real, then kiss!" Kachina immediately blurted out then covered her mouth.
"Sorry!.." She mumbled.
"Cmon, let's go." Kinich immediately scooped you up bridal way and then took his way off.
"Kinich— put me down!" You tried tackling him off but he didn't bother as he still walked off.
Mualani and the others heard you from a distance as you guys got more and more faint.
"Kachina, let's talk about this later." Mualani says with a somewhat concerned smile.
"What just happened?" Lumine and paimon ask.
"Dunno, but I can't help but feel happy for them. At the same time, a little upset because they never told us." Mualani said while putting a hand on her hip.
"Wanna take a bet on who confessed first?" Lumine asked while chuckling.
"I bet Y/N!" Kachina said.
"No way, I think Kinich." Mualani immediately said.
Kinich and you are both somewhere secluded as he put you on top of some boxes.
"M'sorry." Kinich immediately leaned his head on your chest and huffed.
You can suddenly hear the guilt in his voice.
"I was.." He paused.
"I was jealous because lately you haven't been paying much attention to me, so it built up over time and..." He paused again.
"I'm sorry, Y/N." Kinich mumbled as he hugged you tightly again.
"It's fine. I was planning to tell them soon anyways, but the way you did it was so embarrassing." You grumbled.
"Mind if I do it differently then?"
"What do you mean?" You asked.
"What if I just kissed you in front of them instead?" He chuckled while lifting his head up to look at you.
"No!"

Maybe this is a bit of a controversial idea, but hear me out. I really love the Natlan travel mechanics (especially Mualani and Kachina), and I can't help but imagine a mechanic like that for Sumeru characters! Maybe they use flying carpets, sand/desert sharks, or sand serpents/worms. I especially like the idea of a character using a flying carpet as a skateboard or a sand shark as a surfboard.
Now, onto the "yandere" aspect (because it's me and I have to add this), what about a darling from sumeru who uses these mechanics. Maybe a yandere from sumeru would be used to it and know who to deal with it. But a yandere from another nation would be so shocked and confused. Like it's so easy for their darling to escape them, and it's starting to claw at their nerves.
The more I think about it the more obsessed I get over this concept. Please guys lets discuss this please please please 🙏🏼🥺🙏🏼🥺 I'm even more interested in how the Fatui (Capitano 💋💋) will react to a darling with this ability!!!

Drunken Acts, Silent Truths
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mualani x reader! In which:
You and Mualani have fun and get wasted at a party. In the end, you both did things you never would've if you were sober.
Contains a bit of lemon.
Alternative title: In the Back of Kinich's Car
3,017 words 16,597 characters
Tumblr media
"Hey [Name]! Over here!" you heard your best friend yell from across the street. She stood beside Kinich's dark green SUV, swinging her arm fervently to get your attention. From the passenger seat you could see Kachina waving at you, smiling cutely like she always does.
Mirroring the little girl's expression, although yours is more like a grin, you ran towards your friends. Once there, Mualani engulfed you in a tight hug, surprising you.
"[Name]!"
Her hugging you is not a rare occasion, but you seemed to be unable to get used to this. A gentle heat graced your cheeks.
"Hey ya, Lani!"
"You ready to have the best time of your life? The party's going to be so lit! Come on, come on, get in," Mualani gushed as she urged you to get in the car, clearly very excited for what's to come. Her voice easily overpowered the quiet music that was playing. California girls, quite befitting of the occasion.
You greeted the others as you put on your seatbelt, including Ajaw, Kinich's pet lizard, which was currently resting on Kachina's lap.
"Hell yeah I am, we're gonna drink so much and play so many games, it'll be one hell of a time!" you chuckled, trying to match her energy and force down the butterflies in your stomach. Although his face wore the same blank expression, Kinich sighed upon hearing that.
"That sounds like so much fun," Kachina on the other hand giggled at your words. "I can't wait to be 18, then you can take me with you as well!"
"Of course! We can't wait for you to be 18 as well, then we can have girl nights and do lots and lots of fun stuff! But for now, you'll have to patient. On the bright side, today you get to hang out with Kinich, you don't know how many people would envy you for that!"
Indeed, Kinich was very popular. Back in highschool his locker always had one or two confession letters and Mualani, who already knew him at that time, even got some letters as well. They were all some kind of threat telling her to back off from Kinich, though. It got to a point where she even made a bingo with the most frequent contents she found in those letter, like a death threat or slut-shaming, and for every row of five he got in one single letter Kinich would have to buy her a small treat as compensation for "being too handsome." The way she worded it had always rubbed you the wrong way.
"I'm sure they wouldn't be if they actually got to know me. It would probably destroy whatever... Romantic lense they have projected onto me. I'm no prince charming," Kinich insisted as he steered the wheel with his right arm. His other was propped on the frame of the open window.
"No way man, I think they'd only fall harder. With how nice you are, whatever you do will be misinterpreted and feed into their handsome, mysterious, cold guy with a soft spot for them fantasies. It's all just confirmation bias and a bit of delusion, really," you snickered. It's not the first time you and the others have teased him about it, but even then, seeing him in denial about his situation will never stop being amusing. Especially Mualani likes to pick on him for that.
"You know, you could just get a significant other or at least pretend to have one, maybe then they'll stop trying to get with you. With that face of yours it wouldn't be surprising for you to have one too," the latter suggested, this time not even as a joke. And she wasn't really wrong, however the victim of popularity still dismissed the offer.
"They'd just start pestering me with questions about my supposed partner, not worth it."
"Well if you say so."
That's how the conversation ended and there was nothing awkward about the silence that ensued. Then Kachina pointed out the song just started to play.
"Mualani, [name]! Listen!"
It took the two of you a second, but when you realized you instantly turned to each other with the same stupid grin on your faces.
"Crank it up, pretty boy!" Mualani demanded, earning herself a laugh from Kachina and, although she didnt notice, a complicated look from you. As always, Kinich was the only one to notice. You saw him looking at you from the rear view mirror as he turned up the volume. You shook your head softly, indicating that you're fine. The probability that he knows about your crush is at about 85%, according to your calculations.
You were still contemplating, for the thousandth time, if she likes him that way, but you were interrupted by the reason why you were even sulking in the first place. She pulled you towards her by the waist and held an imaginary microphone to your mouth. With a small smile, you had the honour of starting the song.
"You, change your mind~"
"Like a girl, changes clothes~" Mualani followed up, pointing the microphone towards herself.
"Yeah you, PMS~"
"Like a bitch!" the youngest chimed in, causing Kinich to stare at you through the mirror once more, since you were the one who introduced her to the song. If you didn't know him so well, you wouldn't have known that he was glaring at you, hard.
"I would know~" you carried on anyways, averting your eyes and pretending you didn't see.
"That you're no good for me!~" the other two girls sang in unison, getting louder as they approach the last notes of the line.
For the rest of the ride the three of you continued singing. It was as if the party had already started, but then again, it's always like a party when you're with your friends. Eventually, you did arrive at the actual destination though, a bit to your disappointment. You were just getting to the good parts of Call Me Maybe.
"Bye Kachina, bye Kinich!" Mualani, already out of the car, kissed Kachina on the forehead and waved goodbye.
"Have fun hanging out you two!" you bid your goodbyes as well. Kachina got a head rub from you and Kinich a fist bump.
"You too, Mualani and [name]!"
"Keep your drinks within eye sight and always stick together. I'll pick you up at nine."
"We will! Besides, Mavuika will be sober, so don't worry."
Kinich hummed at that, comforted by that and drove off with the SUV, leaving the two of you at the entrance of a big mansion from which bright lights emitted. It was barely 5pm and the sun hadn't set yet, how bright would it be later? Putting the question aside, you went up the stairs to the front door and ringed the doorbell.
Not long after the host of the party Mavuika, she's kind of a local celebrity, opened the door and greeted you with great passion.
"Ah, Mualani, you're here! Very punctual, the party hasn't even started." She looked at you with her blindingly bright eyes and you were a bit entranced. Although they were all red, Mualani's were darker, more desaturated and the upper half of her eyes were this calming blue. Ironically, while picturing her eyes in your head you failed to notice her eyes in the present, looking at you with a peculiar glint in them.
"Is she your plus one?" she asked, looking at you.
"Yeah! This is [name], my best friend!" she introduced you, grabbing and trapping your arm between her own and the side of her body. Your forearm touched her exposed stomach. The skin there was warmer than your arm's, but it can't be warmer than your cheeks in that moment, that you were sure of.
Mavuika suddenly seemed to understand something, causing a smirk to appear on her face. She nodded at you and extended her hand for you to shake.
"Nice to meet you [name]. You have a fine friend here, do make sure to keep her close, yes?"
Naturally, you were puzzled by her advice as you shook her hand, even more so when she winked at Mualani and got a look of what seemed like gratitude in return. What's going on between them? No matter though, because you were already being dragged into the house by your crush. One look was enough to confirm how rich the radiant woman was, but not in a stereotypical rich person way.
The entrance hall was half the size of your apartment, with walls decorated by colorful grafittis and precious looking relics. There's no doubt that they must be worth quite a lot, but no one ever stole any of them, as easy as it would be. They all respected her too much to do so, in fact, it's harder to not respect her.
"So, what do you want to do first? We could play beer pong, hit the dance floor, ooh you wanna wipe the food court clean?" your best friend asked, her gaze directed towards yours.
"How about Mario Kart? Let's play to our heart's content before the others come and hog it," looking right back, you answered. Having reached a mutual conclusion, you followed Mualani upstairs to the gaming room where the video games are. All the while she let go of your arm and shifted to hold your hand instead, intertwined your fingers. "So that you won't get lost," she explained, even though you only walked past six of the only other thirty something people in this gigantic house.
Once you got to the gaming room, this time twice the size of your living room, Mualani officially let go of your hand, to your disappointment. But you didn't dwell on that for long, as your thoughts were soon occupied with strategy, frustration and when to throw the shell. Preferably it should be at a point in time where receiving such an attack would be the most devastating and spirit breaking for the enemy. Such is the cruel nature of Mario Kart, where any personal connections and sense of fun doesn't matter anymore.
Over time, the party started to increase in people and you had to give up the consol. However you took a pack of uno from Mavuika's board games collection, wanting to play it now because you probably won't be sober enough to do so later. Speaking of being drunk, you both got a cup of the alcoholic punch that was being served.
Mualani easily managed to rope in three more players and the games began. Like Mario Kart, although not as brutal, Uno brought out quite a lot of rage and dispair from the depths of your hearts, for you were playing with the "pulling until you have a usable card" rule, which has led to one or two breakdowns. That's less than you expected.
"HA! UNO, LOSERS! YEAH SUCK ON THAT," one of the players hollered, giving you all the one finger salute and doing what seemed to be a victory dance.
"NO THE FUCK YOH DIDN'T, YOU PLAYED A SIX BUT THE CARD BELOW WAS A NINE, FUCKING CRETIN!" another player yelled. It was clear they both had too much to drink.
"AGAIN, NO ONE WON THIS ROUND, WE'LL GO AGAIN!" you protested at the top of your lungs. That would make three drunk people. Next to you, Mualani was laughing hysterically at the state you were in. It's her third cup already and she's only a bit tipsy, but you already had 5 cups and well, the results were evident.
And it went on like this for the next three hours. You played all sorts of things, such as partner beer pong, where Mualani displayed her excellent fine motor skills despite her by then half drunken state. In the end your team won and you very platonically kissed her on the mouth to express your happiness at the victory.
Next up was never have I ever, played in a circle on the ground. That day, some of your more embarrassing secrets became known to many more people other than the only three who knew it before. At some point some guy also started hitting on you, but thankfully Mualani fended him off. After that incident she's been walking even closer to you, like some sort of bodyguard.
When Kinich eventually came to pick you up he found you on a couch, tangled together and only halfway conscious, much to his concern.
"Don't worry, I made sure that everyone was safe. They only had harmless fun the whole evening," Mavuika assured him as she walked up to you three.
"Thank you, and sorry for any trouble they might've caused," your chauffeur dipped his head in gratitude.
"Nonsense, this is my responsibility as the party host."
She then helped Kinich to bring the two of you inside the car, each with one arm slung around their neck, respectively. You all said your goodbyes, well the drunk ones tried but only managed to get out jibberish, and parted ways. Kinich turned off the music so you would sleep soundly on the way home. However the two of you didn't plan on sleeping.
Throughout the day, no, throughout the majority of the time you've known her, you've always been restricting yourself. All of the repressed desires were getting harder to control with the alcohol in your system.
At first you were just staring into her pretty red eyes, but then her put a hand onto your thigh and clicked off both your seatbelts.
"Put on your seatbelts," Kinich ordered, briefly glancing at the backseat. None of you complied. Instead, you slipped your hands up her shirt, roaming around, getting a feel of her skin. She rubbed your thigh a little, her hand slipping further upwards and the other pushed you down to lay on the cushioned seats.
"You alright back there?" Kinich asked somewhat worriedly, not noticing your arm that disappeared behind the soft fabric of Mualani's top. Ajaw, now on Kinich's shoulder as usual, blinked slowly and looked away, turning into the color of Kinich's shirt and hair, camouflaging himself.
You didn't even notice Kinich's voice. In fact, you couldn't hear anything but the rhythmic throbbing in your veins, see anything but her beautiful face, feel anything but her gentle touch, getting shocked by a tiny wave of electricity every time her finger tips connected with your skin.
She too seemed too engrossed in you to take note of the boy at the front who's getting more anxious by the second.
"Mualani? [Name]?" he tried again, but to no avail. That's when he noticed it though. The sight of you exploring each other. For a few seconds he was speechless, but it quickly became slight annoyance.
"Cut it out you two, you can make out when you get back home," he chided with a slight glare, but you still hear nothing. Quietly, he muttered something under his breath about being glad he sent Kachina home first. At this point he has accepted that you won't respond to him no matter what, so instead he opted to turn the music up to at least not hear... Well, you know. Very fittingly though, the song playing then was Knee Socks by Arctic Monkeys.
While Kinich was despairing in the front, the two in the back were enjoying the ride more and more. You were now kissing like there's no tomorrow. Mualani's tongue slips into your mouth and you let it, pressing against it with your own. She's got her hand in your shorts, kneading the flesh of your behind, you've got you hand under her bra, fondling with her breast.
You both pulled away to get some air and stared at each other deeply. There was a weird taste in your mouth, but that too you didn't register. Instead you were focused on the half blue half red sapphires just a couple of centimeters before you.
Futilely, you tried to say a simple "pretty," but all that came out was an incoherent babble. You were... Amazed by how beautiful she was, even with her messy hair, smeared lipstick and almost no light for you too see her.
Fueled with a new animalistic desire, you pulled her down against your lips again. This time you were the one to visit her mouth and she complied. She tasted like alcohol. Like your own mouth, actually. You tasted the same.
"Mm-!" you moaned into the kiss. She had just found your most private parts.
Hearing that, she chuckled breathily, parting your lips once more. She played a bit more with the same spot, eliciting an erotic and pretty vocal reaction. Not feeling satisfied yet, she hooked her pointer fingers at the waistband of your shorts.
"Alright, that's enoug, my car is not a motel," Kinich hastily said, already opening the door on Mualani's side of the car. Despite her weak protests, he dragged her towards your house, actually half piggybacking her, and opened the door with the keys he got from you beforehand. The muscles he had built up from all the sports he did finally got put to good use.
He even carried her, and later you, all the way to the bedroom, thinking it would be more comfortable no matter if you two decide to sleep or fuck. Leaving your drunk and horny friends alone in a house, on the same bed even, might seem like an irresponsible action, but really, he had no idea what else he could do. The two of you have always looked at each other funnily anyways.
Before he went home himself, he poured two glasses of water and put it on the nightstand but when brought the glasses from the kitchen you were already back at it, hence why he left as soon as possible.
That's how you woke up next morning, naked and pressed up against Mualani's warm, also naked body. It seemed like you really needed to have a serious talk about your friendship. Oddly enough though, you were looking forward to it.

Behind Kinich's weird smile that scares almost everyone in Natlan, is his story with Mualani.

Lately, Kachina had noticed something peculiar about Kinich.
Every time she saw him, instead of his typical apathetic expression, he would show all his teeth and his mouth would stretch all the way to his ears. At first, she didn’t understand what that face was, but then she let out an “oh” in surprise when he said it was a smile.
Not just Kachina, but nearly everyone who knew Kinich, noticed the unusual expression on his face. Even those who commissioned him. They would suddenly see him peering at them from a distance with that smile, with Ajaw yelling alongside him: "Shut that ugly mouth of yours right now!"
The cause for Kinich's frequent smiles was always a mystery, until Kachina visited Mualani and expressed her concerns.
"Huh? Did Kinich scare you?" Mualani questioned as she brushed Kachina's hair.
“Don’t you think his smile is scary? I mean… He’s already very unapproachable, and now he even has that expression…”
Mualani remained silent for a little moment, then she held her stomach and rolled on the ground laughing.
“Huh? What’s wrong, Mualani? Even you are acting strange!”
Seeing her perplexed expression, Mualani sat up and responded, “Ah. I'm okay. It’s just that I know why Kinich is acting like that. Actually, this was sort of my responsibility.”
“Huh?”
Then, Mualani braided Kachina's hair and told her the story of many days before.
Tumblr media
Kinich presented Mualani a basket full of dazzling stones he obtained in the Teticpac Peak area. A few days ago, he had received a commission from her to collect those exquisite stones as gifts for Kachina.
“Thank you. Here is your payment.”
Mualani gave him a hefty bag. Kinich always enjoyed dealing with her since, as a merchant, she understood the price of everything and did not haggle. Kinich’s business had slowed down a bit recently. There were not as many new commissions as before, but Mualani continued to meet him on a regular basis.
“What's the problem? Is it not enough?” Mualani had been observing Kinich's expression for quite some time. She inquired because he appeared different than usual (yet his face remained stiff).
"No. This is adequate. I simply wanted to ask you a question concerning business."
To cut a long tale short, Kinich became curious in Mualani's business, which was always flourishing. He wanted to ask her about acquiring more clients. Of course, when there were challenging commissions, people would always think of Kinich first. Life had recently been lot more steady,  which was a good thing, except for Kinich’s wallet.
After listening, Mualani simply grinned. She told him:
“Most people come to entrust you with difficult commissions that few others dare to take on. But if you want to expand your business and attract more clients, you probably need to be more, erm, approachable.”
Kinich scratched his head. For the next half hour, Mualani taught him how to be more friendly to others, including a lesson on how to smile.
As the sun slowly set and Mualani had to go home, she said:
“Remember. Next time you see a familiar face, try smiling at them first! They may find you more friendly, and be more comfortable sharing their problems. That's when you can offer to help them."
Kinich nodded. “Understood.”
“Let's try it one more time.”
Mualani suddenly moved closer to him. Her index fingers reached out, touched Kinich’s face, and softly pulled the corners of his lips in opposing directions. The last rays of sunlight caught her hair, making her seem to radiate a more gorgeous aura than the pile of rocks in the basket he had brought back. Her face was so close to his, and she was grinning.
“Yup. That’s right. Keep smiling like that!”
Mualani looked at Kinich. For a long time. So long that she forgot what she was focusing on; his eyes the color of grass or the smile she had never seen from him before? Perhaps both. Kinich was staring at her. And smiling. That had never happened before. For a moment she was stunned. Even when her fingertips were no longer brushing Kinich’s face, he was still smiling.
It was his own smile, not the one she had just forced on him.
“S-So beautiful…” Her lips moved quietly. “Kinich is… so beautiful!…”
Mualani's breath tickled Kinich's face, and his cheeks showed signs of burning. Most people commended him for his skills, but it was extremely rare for someone to say he was beautiful. Suddenly, his mind wandered back to when he was a baby and his mother was still by his side.
"I hope that in the future, you will encounter many happy things on your journey, so that others can see how beautiful my Kinich's smile is!"
Perhaps his smile, his real smile, had long since disappeared with his mother.
Kinich coughed. Only then did Mualani realize that she was standing a little too close to him. Too close. She quickly took a step back and bent down to pick up the basket of gems.
“Oh… I have to go… G-Goodbye…” Mualani awkwardly hugged the basket of stones and dashed home, leaving Kinich in a perplexed state on the hill, staring at the region belonging to People of the Springs, where the girl’s pale hair bobbed with each step.
Tumblr media
That was the beginning of Kinich's unexpected smile. But he had no idea, and neither did Mualani, that the smile he offered her that day was unique from any other of his. How strange!
So one night, when the Natlan sky was bathed in a pool of stars, Kinich came to see Mualani and gave her a bag of mora.
“I want to commission you.”
Mualani’s eyes widened. Before she could ask anything, Kinich added:
“I want to learn how to smile again… The real smile. Not the kind of smile that makes people even more afraid of me…”
Mualani pursed her lips, attempting to hold back her laughter as she recalled the story which Kachina had told her the day before.
"I apologize if I'm intruding into something that is not my concern. But you didn't just suggest that because you wanted more clients. Is that true?"
Kinich gazed at her. His nod validated what she had stated. But what he failed to want to convey was, in the very moment when he unintentionally smiled at her that day, he seemed to have found a bit of warmth from someone else. It was something he could only vaguely sense in his dreams since his mother had departed.
“Okay,” Mualani replied. "I'm not sure why you're making this peculiar offer, but I accept. And I will not take Mora."
Kinich frowned. “What can I offer you to make it worth your time?”
Mualani leaned toward him. Her eyes locked with his as she smiled brightly.
“Something more valuable than mora, of course!”

A Duel of Thermodynamics
Tumblr media
Type: One Shot
Word Count: 1,300
Relationship: Implied CapitanoxMavuika
Summary: Kinich stumbles across Mavuika and Capitano sparring in the early hours of morning. By the time one of them claimed defeat, Mavuika was incredibly behind on work, and a small crowd had gathered.
————————————
Kinich was the first to find them sparring in the early hours of morning. He had been looking for Mavuika, intending to deliver a message about the state of the scions of the canopy and children of echos. Upon finding her blade clashing with the Harbingers, his hand rested anxiously over the hilt of his weapon. The Captain has been compliant so far, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume he had suddenly turned.
It was only when he realized that their fight was devoid of any elemental use that his body relaxed, both of them wielding common swords from the blacksmith downstairs. Considering the first time they had fought against each other, this was incredibly tame. Still, Kinich would be lying if he said he wasn’t intrigued by their clashing of blades, each calculated action speaking of their centuries of dedicated training.
His trance was broken when Ajaw scoffed. “The Almighty Dragonlord K'uhul Ajaw could fight ten times as well.” Kinich turned to him unimpressed, his arms crossed.
“Oh yeah? Want me to toss you in there too?” Kinich couldn’t hide the small smirk as Ajaw tried to come up with an excuse for Kinich to not throw them in between the Archon and Fatui Harbinger, while still attempting to back up his great claims of strength. After a minute or two of incessant yapping, Kinich tuned him out.
Quite a few minutes later, Mualani and Kachina showed up. Just like Kinich had, they began drawing their weapons. Mualani jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder, ready to fling her weapon behind her until she heard Kinich’s voice. “Not a threat, they’ve been at it for at least twenty minutes now.”
“Really?” Mualani responded with disbelief, Kachina looked equally as surprised. Kinich nodded. “They don’t even look worn down!”
“I wanted to talk to Mavuika about my time in the Night Kingdom.” Kachina tilted her head, watching as Mavuika pinned the Captain down for only a split second. “Guess I’ll have to wait.”
“You’re welcome to sit with me. I have a message that needs to be delivered.” Kinich offered. Their presence would be welcomed, a relief from the annoying flying green ant.
“Who do you think will win?” Mualani at her board between her legs as she sat down on one of the benches. Kachina and Kinich next to her. Kinich shrugged.
“No idea, I thought Mavuika had him for a while, but he’s gotten her equally as much.”
“Why don’t we place bets, if I win I get to possess your body early.” Kinich rolled his eyes, when was Ajaw never not thinking about Kinich dying.
“No.” Ajaw huffed at his answer. Mualani laughed, Ajaw was annoying, sure, but the way he and Kinich interacted was always slightly funny. She hummed in thought.
“I hope Mavuika wins.” Mualani said, gazing curiously at the center of the arena. Kachina agreed.
Thirty minutes after Kinich had first found them, and they were still dueling. Just a few minutes ago they watched as Ororon sat on the other side of the stadium, watching the spar intensely from what they could tell. Likely waiting on Capitano just as they were for Mavuika. An hour later, and the Traveler and their floating buddy had arrived.
“Hi guys! What’re you all up to?” Paimon’s voice accompanied the Traveler's presence. Their hand shading their eyes from the sun as Paimon waved with a grin. She looked over to the middle of the stadium, The Captain rushing towards Mavuika. “What’s that all about?”
“Not sure. We found them like that.” Mualani replied. “Come sit with us, we’re hoping they’ll finish soon.”
“So how long have they been doing,” Paimon made a few random hand motions over to where the spar was taking place. “Whatever that is?”
“Over an hour now!” Kachina said excitedly, the anticipation of who would win getting to her. For Kachina, it was easy to admire other warriors' strength, always eager to improve her own strength. And with every duel observed, there was a lesson to be learned. Besides, who wouldn’t want to see two powerful people fight against each other? The answer was Paimon, only eager to eat the meal the Pyro Archon had promised them.
“Do you think they’ll be done soon? Paimon is hungry.” Mualani laughed at Paimon’s disgruntled face.
“Sorry Paimon, it’ll probably be awhile.”
Mavuika was having a great time, the adrenaline was rushing through veins like fire. She wasn’t sure how long they’d been at it, their energy lasted longer without the strain of elements, and she couldn’t check a clock in the middle of having a sword shoved in her face. Capitano was good, she would never deny that. Many times she thought she had trapped him, only for him to slip out and trap her.
She dodged as he swung for her, her sword meeting his with a clink of the metal. “You’re getting tired.” She teased, noting how lightly he had struck at her.
“Really? I couldn’t tell.” He responded by pushing down harder on his sword, forcing Mavuika to draw back some. She glared as she regained her footing. She dodged again as Capitano’s leg kicked towards her.
“Dirty move, Cap. Use your sword.”
“I could say the same about your fists.” He growled. “And I’m not sure you’re aware, but we have company.”
“What?” The distant sound of cheering caused her to freeze, her eyes flicking to the stands, breaking her concentration. Capitano lunged at her, before she could recover he had his sword aimed at her throat.
“You lose, Mavuika.” He raised his chin, purposefully peering down at her, rubbing in her defeat. He stood there for a moment, keeping his sword in place until he finally removed it, stepping back from her.
“Damn it.” Mavuika huffed, brushing off her jumpsuit. “I commend you, I haven’t fought someone of your caliber in a long time.”
“Likewise.” He looked to where Mavuika had held her gaze a little too long. “I believe we would’ve gone much longer had it not been for distractions.”
“Upset our personal time was interrupted, Captain?” Imagining his expressions under the mask spurred her on, she couldn’t help but wonder if his eyes narrowed, or if his lips turned upwards with his words. He was as stiff and serious as the stadium's walls, with less spray paint.
“Not exactly. You seem to have quite the line of visitors.” Capitano observed the crowd, picking out the Traveler and Ororon. He adjusted the sword in his grip, then tilted his head at Mavuika.
“Jealous of my popularity?” Internally Mavuika cursed, they must’ve been fighting for far longer than intended. If the Traveler and their floating companion had already come for lunch, she’d have to apologize. She could already imagine the work pile up this would cause for her, not only that, but they had watched her lose. She’d have to build up her reputation again.
“You’re reaching, woman.” He stood in silence for a moment, contemplating his next words. “You should deal with them.” He turned his body to the stands. Mavuika sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, noting the gross feeling of sweat. She nodded.
“We’ll have to do this again sometime. And next time, I won’t lose.”
“I’m sure.” He responded dismissively, he paused before walking out. “I am looking forward to it.” Mavuika watched as he left, noting how Ororon joined him. She’d have to scold that boy eventually, he got away with far too much. When they had disappeared, most likely aided by one of Ororon’s tricks, she waved down the small crowd that had gathered, calling them down to meet her. She’d have to give them all a little scolding, after all, they were the reason for her defeat.

“delivery for kinich!” a mail man shouted, trying his best to not look down over the ledge the scions of the canopy is held. “delivery for ki—”
“i heard ya!” the small dragon yells, taking the sealed letter and small box from the man’s hands and throws a pouch of mora as thanks.
the man sweat drops at the comical sight of the tiny dragonlord floating up to where kinich was. said man was dangling his legs over the ledge, hair swaying with the wind and an indifferent look on his face as he swats away his small companion and roughly takes the letter in his hands. he could only assume that the two had started another argument once again.
with a sigh, he cups a hand to his mouth and shouts, “thank you for your patronage!”
kinich looked in his direction and gave him a small nod. there were few postal workers here in natlan, so he made sure to at least pay the man generously—especially with how his legs shake and hand clutch the side of the mountain for dear life.
ajaw continued to punch and tug at his head but his attention had zeroed in on the envelope. it felt heavier than the last and you had sent a small package with it. ‘for my dearest, kinich & almighty dragon lord, ajaw.’ the small note said with your signature right below it as well as a wax seal at the corner. your penmanship makes kinich smile and before ajaw can open his mouth, he takes the grapple on his waist and zips away to find a secluded place to open your gifts. they were sacred to him and therefore had to be treated with utmost care.
when he lands on teticpac peak, he sits down by one of the rocks and gently peels away the seal. kinich makes a mental note to stop by a market to get a new container for all your letters, after all, his bedside drawer can only hold so much of you over the years.
‘to my dearest, kinich,’
with just four words, you had him smiling like a fool. one hand propped behind his back to support his weight as he leisurely soaks in your stories like a sponge. ajaw sits by his shoulder, impatiently demanding him to open the box that came along with your letter. kinich was not even half way with reading before he relented—you always had a knack for making pages and pages of stories, but he didn’t mind. you have been away for nearly 7 years now and send only a letter or two every few years. kinich learned to appreciate the pages of your love every time they arrive.
“hurry up!” ajaw demanded, waiting with bated breath as kinich opened the box. “learn to be patient, ajaw.”
the dragon only huffed and turned around but it didn’t take long before he dove head first into the array of gifts. while his little companion drowned in material luxuries, kinich took out items in piles and made a mental note to give them to their respective owners.
kinich tucked the small pouch with xilonen’s name along with your letter for her at his side. he will deliver these to her first, he concludes. as he’s sifting through the items, kinich catches a glimpse of ajaw sitting on a toy fox’s head with a small note with kachina’s name. the final item that seemed important was a small box containing colorful seashells with mualani’s name on it.
his brows furrowed in confusion as he sets all the gifts down carefully and sifts through the package one more time. and again, and again, until his lower back felt sore. ajaw noticed his antsy behavior and decided to look at what all the fuss was about. kinich sat down, head lowered with his bangs covering his eyes—ajaw was beginning to worry (but he would rather die than verbally admit it).
“hey!” ajaw turned to kinich who had stiffly stood up. clutching at your letter as the sliver of expectancy in his eyes dimmed. “don't tell me they actually forgot about you?”
“let’s go back,” he says with a subtly sullen voice. “we have to deliver these to the others.”
ajaw makes no further comment and sits on his shoulder as they zip from one place to another. he doesn’t point out the way kinich’s eyes looked duller and the way a frown tugged at his lips—he was upset.
“hmph! i'll be sure to show them a piece of my mind when they get back!" the dragon complains to him as they arrive back home. kinich beelined his way back to his residence, a bit more aggressive than he normally would.
he doesn’t want to admit that he was upset—it was stupid. so what if you didn’t get him a gift after not hearing from you for almost a year? but how come everyone else had one? hell even citlani and mavuika received one, so why didn’t he?
with a click of his tongue he pushed past all the people in his way, muttering half hearted apologies here and there as ajaw kept calling his name. kinich was not upset nor was he disappointed—he wasn’t a child chasing after the trail of gold you left behind anymore. he was an adult now, someone people look up to and admire. kinich was no longer the shy kid that always wondered if he could ever chase after you.
“kinich!”
with the shout of his name, he was taken back to memory lane. how you would call to him from the ground, a pair of wheels at your feet as you glided through the rocky terrain as if it were made of ice. the smile you flash him as you point to your finish line makes his heart skip a few beats, rendering him only to reply in a nod because his mind has turned into a mushy puddle.
“kinich!”
you have always been golden in his eyes. smiles bright like the sun, kindness gentle like its morning rays, and hypnotizing in the starry trail you leave behind. kinich remembers the first time he tried his hands on rollerblades. he felt unwittingly afraid of standing on his own two feet, the possibility of his world turning upside down with one single step scared him. but you were always there to ward away his fears. it wasn’t long before he took them off and said with a dead expression that he will never try them again. the laugh that he managed to steal from your lungs made all his suffering worth it.
“kinich!”
he doesn’t like letting things go, not when you’ve taught him how to cherish every little thing. but he’d hate himself if he kept you from your dreams. so there he was, all those years ago, standing by natlan’s borders, unable to say goodbye as the rest bid theirs. you had to make him face you—gently cupping his jaw with both hands and flashing a small smile, giving him a tempting offer.
“let me stay,” you said. you were willing to give up your dreams if it meant making him happy. kinich didn’t want his happiness, he wanted yours.
“leave,” he said bluntly. it made you laugh because it sounded incredibly rude, but the way he held your hand in his shaking hold, lip bitten until it almost bled, everyone knew he was struggling the most.
“i’ll give you souvenirs,” you offered as consultation and it took every willpower he had to say he only wanted you.
“i’ll keep them safe.” he replied and you smiled.
“kinich!”
urging you to travel has been the best and worst decision in his life—you were enjoying your life but he was stuck missing you. his longing for the sun in his life greatly outweighed his happiness for you. how can he be happy when happiness is spelled with your name? the way you smile, and the way you leave a golden trail?
“kinich.”
“ajaw, enou—” his sentence was cut off when he turned to look at the smiling faces of his tribe. brows furrowed in confusion as he searched the crowd for a certain green dragon, but all his eyes could see was gold.
the wind in his lungs was stolen as the images of smiling faces turn to fade, his attention solely on you in the distance, ajaw by your side as you both waved him over. as fast as the winds could take him, kinich ran straight in your arms—his home. your laugh ringed like morning birds and your hands felt warm like the afternoon heat. you were home; you were his gift.
“pasalubong, for kinich,” you say with a teasing lilt to your voice.
“pasalubong?” he repeats, hands coming to cradle your smiling face. “what does that mean?”
you smile wider and hold his hands with your own. “it means gifts given by homecomers. but,” you tuck away a stray piece of his hair behind his ear as you tempt him in another embrace. “it can also mean ‘to meet again.’”
kinich laughed—airy and bright, like the setting sun. this was so you, he thought, burying his head in your neck. trying to make up for all the lost physical contact he had missed.
“thank you for the gift.” he said with a smile.
you pat him on the back and hummed in delight. “i came back just for you.”
“i’m honered,” he jests and takes a step back, not letting your hand go. “you should be! the trip back home is nothing short of tedious!”
he chuckles because kinich knows he’s a goner. no need for xilonen’s amused teasing, mualani’s persistence and kachina’s curiosity. everyone in his tribe and maybe even natlan knew, kinich would wait for you knowing you’ll eventually come home to him.
