Album Review: 10,000 Maniacs - MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition)
Though she kind of screwed her bandmates, Natalie Merchant gave 10,000 Maniacs the best consolation prize they’ve could’ve hoped for.
What turned out to be Merchant’s final gig found the Maniacs - augmented with strings, woodwinds, extra singers, guitars, banjo, mandolin and keys - playing “MTV Unplugged” on April 21, 1993. And though their singer was gone by the time it was released, the recording gave the group its most-successful album, a huge hit in the Bruce Springsteen-cum-Patti Smith cover “Because the Night” and what are to many the definitive versions of such originals as “These are Days,” “Candy Everybody Wants,” “Like the Weather” and others.
Twenty-one years down the line, MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition) revisits the the LP and tacks on three Merchant-David Byrne duets left off the original release.
And while they don’t entirely fit with Unplugged’s sonic motif, the searching agnosticism of Iris DeMent’s “Let the Mystery Be,” Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s country-rock shuffle “Dallas” and Dolly Patron’s “Jolene,” on which Byrne mostly lays out after singing co-leads on the preceding tracks, come at the right time.
And with that, 10,000 Maniacs’ masterpiece is slightly more masterful.
Grade card: MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition) - A

Interview with The Cranberries
Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Noel Hogan and Fergal Lawler of The Cranberries over Zoom video!
Island Records/UMe are proud to announce the release of remastered and expanded versions of No Need to Argue by The Cranberries on November 13, 2020. Originally released in 1994, No Need To Argue was the band's biggest selling album with global sales in excess of 17 million and contained the band's most commercially successful single "Zombie." The video for "Zombie" has since been viewed over 1 billion times on YouTube, making The Cranberries the only Irish band to pass this milestone and putting them in a very small club of artists to do so. Dolores O'Riordan - the band's powerful and captivating lead singer - tragically passed away in January 2018.
The expanded 2CD and digital versions of No Need To Argue include a remaster of the album and three B-sides: "Away," "I Don't Need," and "So Cold In Ireland" from the original tapes. Also included are 19 previously unreleased tracks including two songs not officially released in any format: "Yesterday's Gone" - recorded unplugged for MTV in New York in 1995 - and a demo of "Serious," which until now has only existed as a low quality live bootleg on YouTube. The 2CD edition features previously unseen photographs taken from the album photo sessions.
We want to hear from you! Please email [email protected].

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS: 25th-Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Of 'Core' To Include Rarities, Demos And Live Recordings
Tumblr media
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS roared on to the scene 25 years ago with their raucous debut "Core". A breakout success, the album peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, dominated radio waves with hits like "Sex Type Thing" and "Wicked Garden", and has been certified eight times platinum by the RIAA. The band also took home the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for their smash single "Plush".
To mark the legendary album's silver anniversary, Rhino will release two versions on September 29, which is 25 years to the day of the album's original debut. The first is the "Core: Super Deluxe Edition" ($79.98), which includes four CDs featuring a newly remastered version of the original album, plus more than two hours of unreleased demos and live performances, including the band's performance on "MTV Unplugged". Also included is the original album on vinyl and a DVD that contains a 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of the album along with videos for the album's four singles. The set, limited to 15,000 copies worldwide, comes packaged in a richly detailed hardcover book (12 x 12) with rare and unseen photographs. The music from the Super Deluxe version will also be available via digital download and streaming services.
Fans can pre-order a limited edition bundle of the "Core: Super Deluxe Editon" at www.stonetemplepilots.com which includes a bonus replica 7-inch vinyl single of "Plush" that was originally released in the U.K. in 1993. This exclusive bundle is limited to 1,000 copies.
Also available on the same day is a 2-CD "Core: Deluxe Version" ($19.98) containing a newly remastered version of the original album expanded with rare b-sides and previously unreleased demos. A single disc remaster of the original album will be available as well.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS (guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, drummer Eric Kretz, and vocalist Scott Weiland) debuted with "Core" in the fall of 1992 and by the following summer were one of the biggest rock bands on the scene, powered by exhilarating live shows and a string of now-classic songs from the album, remastered here for the very first time.
Nearly all of the music on the second disc of both versions is making its commercial debut. Of the nine demos included, four were recorded between 1987 and 1990 when the band was known as MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. One of those, "Only Dying", is an unheard song the band had planned to re-record in 1994 for "The Crow" soundtrack. The idea was later scrapped after the star of the film, Brandon Lee, was killed during production. The disc continues with five unreleased demos from their original Atlantic sessions and concludes with four b-sides, including the jazzy "Swing Type Version" of "Sex Type Thing", as well as two acoustic versions of "Plush" — the "Acoustic Type Version" recorded with the full band and the rarely heard "first take" that was recorded by Weiland and Dean DeLeo for MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" in 1993.
The third disc contains two fiery live recordings from the summer of 1993, the first an unreleased performance at Castaic Lake Natural Amphitheater near Los Angeles and the second from the Reading Festival, making its U.S. debut here. These high-energy shows feature performances of all but two songs from "Core" as well as an early live version of "Lounge Fly", a song the band has just written a month earlier that would appear the following year on the band's second album, "Purple".
The band's iconic appearance on "MTV Unplugged", recorded in November 1993, gets its first official release on the final CD in the set. This would be their last performance in support of "Core" and includes reworked, acoustic versions of "Wicked Garden" and "Sex Type Thing", the debut performance of "Big Empty", which would later appear on "Purple", and a cover of David Bowie's "Andy Warhol".
"Core: Super Deluxe Edition" also features the original album pressed on vinyl, and a DVD that presents a 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of "Core" together will all four of the videos made for the album: "Sex Type Thing", "Plush", "Wicked Garden" and "Creep".

Song Review: 10,000 Maniacs feat. David Byrne - “Jolene” (Live)
David Byrne didn’t know what to do with himself when he joined 10,000 Maniacs for “Jolene” during the band’s famous “MTV Unplugged” gig. So, while he may have been strumming an acoustic guitar, he sung but a couple of words.
No matter. Natalie Merchant had things under control. She didn’t over sing it, nor did she try to emulate Dolly Parton. Merchant simply did Merchant and did so splendidly.
And now that the song is out to preview the Maniancs’ MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition), the only question is: what took so long?
Following the template that marked the balance of Merchant’s swan song with the Maniacs, “Jolene” is one of three bonus tracks - Iris DeMent’s “Let the Mystery Be” and Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “Dallas” are the others, also with Byrne - that’ll appear on the puffed-up album, set for a Sept. 6 release.
Every note - false starts, do-overs; everything - from the sessions that produced 10,000 Maniacs’ MTV Unplugged should come out. This is a good start.

Prince famz regularly pee on the “dreams” some have WRT possible re-issues/box sets/expanded editions. In an ongoing feature I point to other extravagant releases, sometimes by artists who have a fraction of Prince’s fame.
Like Midnight Oil:
The £157 ‘Overflow Tank’ set is the one that will probably get fans salivating. It’s a 4CD+8xDVD set. The audio discs feature one CD of unreleased studio recordings, one CD of unavailable B-sides and rarities plus two live CDs drawn from iconic shows across two decades. The eight DVDs include MTV Unplugged, a live concert, behind the scenes documentary and the films Black Rain Falls, Oils On the Water, Saturday Night at the Capitol, Blackfella Whitefella, and a special bonus DVD with rare and unseen live footage from six different shows.
But yeah, a multi-disc box set of a million-seller like Purple Rain is obviously a pipe dream.

Rewind: Paul McCartney - Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) (1991)
With Paul McCartney set to release the deluxe edition of 1989’s Flowers in the Dirt today, March 24, 2017, Sound Bites listens back to another McCartney album that should be expanded and re-issued: 1991’s Unplugged (The Official Bootleg).
Racing through 17 songs in just under an hour, Paul McCartney and the 1991 version of his fantastic, four-man, one-woman band set a high standard for MTV’s “Unplugged” series by recasting a bunch of classic (and deep) Beatles and McCartney solo tracks, tossing off a few cool covers and even revisiting the cute Beatle’s first songwriting effort.
“I Lost My Little Girl” probably appears nowhere but on Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) and McCartney deserves big props for having the cajones to play it. Although he’s written his share of head-shaking lyrics, nothing can touch the boner that goes, her clothes were not expensive/her hair didn’t always curl/I don’t know why I love her/but I love my little girl.
But even this dumb ditty sounds smart in the hands of Paul and Linda McCartney, Hamish Stuart (bass, guitar and lead vocals on “Ain’t No Sunshine”), Robbie McIntosh (guitar, Dobro, piano), Paul “Wix” Wickens (keys, accordion, percussion) and Blair Cunningham (drums).
For his part, McCartney is his talkative and corny self, asking the crowd to make noise, playfully mocking a fan for thinking he wrote a song called “Blackboard” and paying tribute to heroes such as Gene Vincent on a positively infectious and shuffling “Be-Bop-A-Lula;” Bill Monroe with “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” featuring a smoking, triple-time coda; and Jesse Fuller on “San Francisco Bay Blues.”
This concert was informal enough that “We Can Work it Out” got a false start when McCartney forget the opening line and “She’s a Woman” was slowed to crawl, proving that even an almost-perfect song such as that one can be successfully revamped when done in the right way. Elsewhere, McCartney dives deep into his catalog by dusting off the quirky “That Would be Something” and the tender instrumental “Junk,” which was preceded by a glorious twofer of “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and “Singing the Blues.”
Some spectacular Unplugged albums followed McCartney’s - 10,000 Maniacs, Bob Dylan and Nirvana come to mind. But this one is different, in that it finds McCartney and crew playing instruments that actually were unplugged (in favor of micing them) and performing a style of music that didn’t seem at first blush to be unsuited to the format.
As was usually the case from the early 1960s to the end of the 1970s, the Unplugged era was another one in which McCartney found himself at the forefront of a musical movement and made an album no fan should be without.
Grade card: Paul McCartney - Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) (1991) - A
