Spider-Man Read-Through 036: Thanos - The Final Threat (AV Ann 7, MTIO Ann 2)
MASTERPOST
As promised last time, Thanos is here, ready to smash some heroes!
And the Avengers are ready to smash him back!
This batch thoroughly impressed me, I must say.
Adam Warlock is here, and he's determined to fight Thanos, the Mad Titan. He asks the Avengers to help.
He explains that Thanos fell in love with Death and killed a lot of people, including his own mother, which is how you know he's the real deal.
Suddenly, Spider-Man!
There you go.
Back to our regular scheduling!
Thanos has been vanquished before, but he's back, and pissed off since Death abandoned him. So he got all 6 cosmic stones and fused them into a giant one.
Oh wow, we're really speedrunning Infinity War, huh!
Thanos plans to get Death back by destroying every star in the universe, which is completely batshit but also, I kind of love it. Love truly knows no bounds.
While Warlock is catching up everybody on who did what, Pip the Troll (don't ask me who that is) arrives on Sanctuary II and is surprised by Thanos.
Our heroes depart, and each one of them has a moment to collect their thoughts and fears, and it's remarkably well-written.
I didn't expect to actually be invested, but it reminds of the last issue of the Dark Phoenix saga in how grandiose it feels.
Suddenly...!
It's really impressive, actually.
Thor and Iron Man are deployed, and IM surmises that he can take care of the smaller ships, given how powerful Thor is...
And he would be right. How cool!
This is also really cool!
And this immediately what follows. The action sequence is really good, each Avenger has time to shine and it's overall well paced.
Unfortunately for Warlock, it turns out Thanos left his cherished Pip dead just for him to find on the vessel.
Warlock and Mar-Vell go to Thanos's ship first, they're quickly beaten, but then...
Damn, it's really a good issue.
Iron Man shatters the big gem. Thanos is quite enraged and disappears.
I was asking myself the same question, but you know what, the middle panel is incredibly raw and I don't need justification for that.
What I figure is that it's some sort of reincarnation thing à la Dax from DS9.
The dead hero awakens in the Soul Gem, with Gamora and Pip! Aww.
This is such a nice ending, I really love it! I'm sorry for all the pics, but it really was a stellar issue.
In the following issue, Peter is called in his dreams by Avenger Moon-Dragon, who makes him watch Infinity War and Endgame in 4K Ultra HD before DVDs even existed.
Except the happy end isn't quite there yet.
I gladly objectify the waking man. Well, he's already an object, but I'm looking respectfully.
In space, some stars discuss how it's totally fate that Peter and Ben Grimm aka The Thing fight together to save the universe. Huh-huh.
Spidey decides that he's going to need help, and naturally comes to the Fantastic Four. There, he finds Ben who just so happens to have a space shuttle ready for take off. And off they go!
I like how depressed Peter is. We rarely see him so quiet. It helps to convey the gravity of the situation.
The two heroes aren't doing too bad, but they eventually get knocked out.
Ooooooooh! Oh :( Wasn't it enough to give him peace?
Good for you, Spidey.
However, he changes his minds and successfully frees the Avengers, which I like because it's more of a Spidey thing. I couldn't see him quite fighting Thanos head-on.
Ah, I see again some of the brilliance of the previous issue.
Spidey successfully frees Adam Warlock from the globe that contained him, and the latter hero quickly annihilates Thanos. His crew surrenders immediately.
Aww.
Damn was that a great double issue. I largely preferred the first one, but the second one was fun too, wow.

Err this is screen capture..pretty sure know where this is from...but if it's MTU or MTIO is iffey as either hero was main star on each...
What isn't in question? Thanos captured the Avengers drained energy from 6 stones not yet called or part of " infinity gauntlet" to make one giant gem with which meant to " blow out" most of the stars celestial star death as his gift to his sought paramour DEATH....only two not in Thanos butterfly net are the Thing and Spiderman...one bad or false move....

Huge mounds of sulfur on Mt Io, Kuju Range. As I was picking through the rock fields nearby, I found crystallized sulfur in bright yellow nuggets. I’ve seen small amounts of sulfur in the Cascade volcanoes, but I’ve never deposits like this before. #mtio #sulfur #sulphur #volcano #volcanoes #mtkuju #chojabaru #optoutside #exploreoutdoors #geology #volcanism #sonyalpha (at Aso Kujū National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCfPPK6jtHS/?igshid=kvkoi67qo0bo

I got tagged!
Thanks @kittygirl53, I think this is my first tagging on tumblr for something like this. My afternoon is made!
FIVE THINGS YOU’D FIND IN MY BAG
1. A bandana - I use as a hanky and sweat dabber (fuck you, dysautnomia!)
2. An EMS rescue knife and a basic Leatherman multitool thing
3. A surprising number of lip things; gloss, lipstick, chapstick, balm, lip oil...
4. My suuper gorgeous pink and grey wallet
5. A miniature first aid kit- I’m an EMR (emergency medical respsonder, basically first responder. I’m a bit below EMT. Goimg for my EMT next fall tho!), and being prepared really helps my anxiety. It’s also a Girl Scout who grew up in Wyoming Thing as well. BE PREPARED! I carry a toothbrush/paste/floss too
FIVE THINGS IN MY BEDROOM
1. My dresser is an antique from the 1930s, it was my Grandma’s
2. My three anime wall scrolls, because I haven’t been arsed to take them down, I still love them/anime, I’m just...an Elder Nerd now.
3. Three alarm clocks on my bedside table. I do not collect them.
4. A counter with an ancient iMac, though not as ancient as the one that used to reside there (a Strawberry iMac DV. Second-gen iMac, with the slot loading cd drive. Got him in October of 1999. Señor Pink is actually STILL RUNNING!). The Epson inkjet printer is circa 2002.
5. A life-size glass head, upon which I display my small collection of vintage hats and my other hats
FIVE THINGS I WANT TO DO IN LIFE
1. Sing somewhere amazing, for real.
2. Maybe find someone to spend my life with that ISN’T a cat
3. Make my home a restful, uncluttered space so it’s easier to keep clean.
4. Maybe get back into competitive swimming...local Paralympics or something?
5. Travel.
FIVE THINGS I’M CURRENTLY INTO
1. Otome games, because the idea of making Oda Nobunaga (As a slender bishonen) my boyfriend is hilarious (and it’s escapist fun when I feel shitty)
2. Caramel M&Ms- they re sooo good! And the caramel they use is actually pretty good, too! I’m a bit obsessed...
3. Fountain Pens and ink, but that’s a constant special interest
4. Fall!
5. Bath bombs and candles with rings in them
FIVE THINGS IN MY TO-DO LIST
1. Get some writing/progress done on some of my works in progress, original and fanfiction. I don;t want Kenshin and Kaoru to think I have abandoned them...
2. Think of something to do with pasta with will go with fish for supper
3. Allow myself to grieve. One of my kitties passed last week, after fighing for her life since May. We’d been running a kitty hospice since the end of June. I’m../utterly brokenhearted, to be honest.
4. Entertain the other four kitties, because of weather changes they’re all suuuuuper squirelly today.
5. Try and medicate to keep my pain down enough that I could try to get SOMETHING done today, beyond filling my pill minders for the week, feeding cats/scooping boxes, and watering plants. I got a new orchid the day after we lost Chai (and it will be her orchid) and I repotted her yesterday, so I’m keeping an eye on her.
if you feel like sharing, tagging: @seducingmrhenney, @lynnekitty13, @askdoctorsunsetsky, @scarletswalking, @sparkletindi

Read ur answer to an ask abt Gon's "selfishness", & ur rb of a post of Ging not "abandoning" Gon; both were interesting reads. Liked what u said abt Gon, Mtio, Killua, & Ging. "& to get to what Gon really is & what's Killua’s interpretation of Gon takes a lot of work & honestly is very hard. it’s really hard to filter out Killua’s pov & i don’t think I’ve managed.." Yeah, we get a lot KilluaPOV; interestingly. How much of Gon do u think is really him & what do u think is Killua's interpretation?
Thank you for the ask <3 I’m really hesitant to answer this question without rereading the manga and taking notes XD but that’d mean i could answer it only after a month or more XD maybe i’ll do the reread in February and make a more detailed post on the topic. So here I’ll just give the broad strokes. I’m sorry for that. I hope it won't feel too chaotic. And I do find Gon more complex than what I'll outline here.
I’m not sure if it’s exactly Killua’s interpretation per se. What I mean is that probably a lot of the stuff we read/hear Killua think or say about Gon is pretty accurate. Like the conclusions Killua comes to when he outright analyses Gon’s character and skills. What Killua is less good at figuring out, if I remember canon correctly, is Gon’s attitude to him. And I think he also fails when it comes to Gon’s motivations and the scope of Gon’s mental breakdown in the chimaera ant arc. It’s a mixed bag so this is the first pitfall that sometimes we can rely on Killua and sometimes we can’t.
And that comes from the fact that Killua isn’t neutral towards Gon. He can’t detach his analysis of Gon from how Gon affects him. And that’s a really human feature of Killua’s, truly analysing people we’re emotionally attached to might be impossible. And this is where I think the reader comes in with their own interpretation.
It’s true that the reader can make the mistake of overly relying on Killua’s analysis of Gon, or Wing’s, Bisky’s, Ging’s etc. But I think the bigger pitfall is analysing Gon through Killua’s emotions or the opposite by deciding that taking into account how Gon affects the people around him, including Killua, is unfair to Gon.
And this boils down to which character they like more or resonates with them more.
There are more people who prefer Killua and it’s easy to see why. Killua’s emotions and thoughts become more and more open to us as the story progresses. While Gon’s, on the other hand, become more and more closed off. It’s just easier to align yourself with the character who seems easy to understand than with the character who becomes more and more distant.
Idk how intentional it is on Togashi’s part, but I’d venture a guess that it is pretty intentional. In the exam arc Gon’s pov is the main one and we get good insight into the way he thinks. We see him figure out tricky situations, like the test with the candles. We see him analyse how Pokkele gets the badge he needs. Then figure out the getting Hisoka’s badge issue, how he approaches the problem, how he analyses what he’s doing and progressively eliminates the flaws in his approach until he comes to the exact right way to get the badge. This part also shows us three other things.
One: focusing on a task can leave Gon blind to the rest of the world, which results in him losing his own badge and Hisoka getting an opportunity to manipulate Gon.
Two: not achieving something on his own merits really fucks Gon up.
Three: that he doesn’t know how to handle situations where his goals conflict with his loyalties - Togashi shows him mercy here and Gon isn’t forced to choose between Kurapika and Leorio’s well-being and getting the badge.
Point 2 is actually reinforced here because it already shows up in the game with Netero on the ship and comes back again really damn fast when Gon gets brutalised by Hanzo. We see more of it in Gon’s fights in Heaven’s Arena. He doesn’t mind the losses that much, as long as his victories are earned. He doesn’t seem that bothered by his loss to Hisoka because he achieves in that fight almost as much as he could. What disappoints him is that the referee quite openly and Hisoka sneakily make the fight shorter so Gon’s time to learn from Hisoka is cut a bit short. It also comes back when Gon chooses to play Greed Island alone, without using shortcuts.
And that part of Gon’s personality is tainted from the start. He doesn’t mind getting hurt, being downright brutalised if the win at the end feels earned. He lets himself get hurt by Hanzo, the arena guy, Hisoka, Genthru and Knuckle. All to become more capable and earn the victories that he hopes to have after the brutalisation. And this peaks in his nen contract where this character trait/flaw meets his mental breakdown.
This part of Gon’s personality I think can be pretty fairly blamed on the Freecess and the hunters. On the Freecess because the condition Mito chooses to hinge Gon’s participation in the exam on is Gon catching an elusive and hard to catch fish. Aka Gon needed to hone several skills to achieve that: strength, reflexes, patience, angling and probably several others. Ging decided that any contact with him will depend on Gon getting the hunter’s licence. Kite, when he meets Gon on whale island, chastises him for his lack of knowledge and skill. And then as the story progresses Gon needs to get better at stuff constantly.
The approval of a lot of people in Gon’s life hinges on him being capable, and more often than not these expectations of capability are beyond what anyone could expect from a child but that’s classic shonen shit. The twist in hxh is that these constant expectations break Gon in the end.
The fact that so much of Gon’s relationships is dependent on him proving himself he really doesn’t seem to know how to foster those relationships that don’t require that from him. Mito, while she did give Gon that skill based ultimatum, actually loves him regardless of what he can and can’t do. The ultimatum taints their relationship a bit but it doesn’t determine whether Gon is worthy of Mito’s attention. And I suspect Gon knows that. Him calling Mito his mum and rejecting whoever Ging would talk about on the tape shows that Gon feels pretty certain of her.
And that’s actually a double edged sword. Because when Gon starts feeling secure within a relationship with someone he starts to take it for granted. I don’t think it’s a conscious decision, it’s more of an automatic subconscious mechanism. He does that with Killua, too.
In the beginning Killua gets interested in Gon because Killua sees someone his age who’s also very capable. And actually throughout the exam arc it’s Killua who follows Gon around, makes sure he doesn’t lose sight of Gon. At that point Gon’s just generally making friends and Killua is the last one he meets. It’s clear that he’s not more attached to Killua than he’s to Kurapika or Leorio.
What fosters a stronger attachment is first of the injustice that happens to Killua by Illumi’s hands and the forced separation afterwards. Because Gon has a very strong sense of whats just and what isn't, though it gets challenged and more shaky as the story progresses.
The Zoldycks are really stupid abusers because if Illumi didn’t do his thing in public, if he let Killua pass the exam and scared him into going home after Gon probably wouldn’t go after Klliua. They would all be parting ways, it’d stand to reason that Killua’s going to do his own thing. If Illumi played his cards right no one would’ve suspected that something was amiss. But Gon going after Killua really cements their friendship.
After their friendship is cemented and they decide to travel together Killua jumps into his big brother mode. Seeing that Gon has no clue what to do next, Killua takes the reins and starts to control the logistics of finding Ging, usually for the better but sometimes for the worse - like when Killua gets them to lose almost all their money XD.
And because Killua starts playing this facilitating role, previously played by Mito, Gon, while cherishing their relationship, starts to also overly rely on it. And before Gon starts to break it’s all kind of harmless, though it does feel a bit ominous. Like this might become a problem and then it does.
It’s not to say that Gon never caters to Killua’s emotional needs. The whole saving Killua thing is Gon taking into consideration Killua’s emotions. He does it again on Whale Island by saying the exact thing Killua needs to hear, or again when they are Nobunaga’s captives.
He also does that kind of stuff for Kurapika in York New.
Gon generally really cares about the well-being of the people he likes. He gets angry when they get hurt, when injustice happens to them. He wants to protect them, also protect them from being bothered by his needs or his problems. Where his emotional intelligence doesn’t work so well is understanding how his actions may affect others. Especially when theoretically they aren’t involved at all. We can first see it with Zebro at the testing gate. Zebro needs to clearly alert Gon to the fact that his actions may mean trouble for Zebro. And that is something Killua never does, he bottles stuff up.
And when this comes back with a vengeance is when Togashi starts limiting our direct, unbiased insight into Gon. Because we have it very clearly spelt out how Gon’s behaviour negatively affects Killua but it requires effort to piece together what Gon’s going through, what he may be thinking.
And here when some fan interpretations go so aggressively into two opposing directions.
1. Gon’s selfish because he’s not thinking about Killua at all. He’s only focused on his goals blah blah.
2. Gon’s a kid going through a mental breakdown and Killua is actually facilitating it and projecting too much onto Gon and expecting too much of him.
And because how this concludes is so visceral so shocking and possibly traumatising for the reader it’s very easy to get lost in the emotions of it all. And a lot of fandom is very quick in trying to assign blame and moral judgement to something like this. Their minds subconsciously decide whether Gon’s only the victim in the chimaera ant arc and completely not responsible for Killua’s feelings, or if he’s guilty of making Killua feel bad. And once the decision is made many just double down it. And it goes into full on “sweet innocent baby” Gon or “selfish, uncaring and stupid” Gon.

BHOC: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #40
BHOC: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #40
I bought this issue of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE as usual at my local 7-11 as MTIO was now on my regular buying list, thanks to the Thing being the headline character. But I can’t say that the series was all that wonderful during this period. More often than not, the stories were quick throw-away affairs that lacked any staying power. And in fact I didn’t recall much of anything about this issue until I…

#mycomiclovebeganhere Sheffield Space Centre on Heeley Bottom. Went in with my Mum one day when it was pouring with rain 40 odd years ago and started perusing the cheap long boxes. I was initially a Marvel kid. Specifically Marvel Two In One (first book was MTIO 50). Then Byrne/Claremont's X Men. The shop moved to the Wicker and is still there. I still read, mostly via digital subs these days (I haven't the room anymore for physical books) the shop still exists 😁 (at Sheffield Space Centre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvu1unnptt/?igshid=1eo66u53hbi8a
