To own WordPress Installs attackers are using automated scans!

According to the researchers of the WordFence, cyber attackers have their eyes on the recently installed WordPress. These attackers are taking advantage of users who cannot configure server's settings.

Attackers are using this URL on behalf of the user to get the control over the system and get know about the installation process.

According to the WordFence, one of the Wordpress development company the security plugins attacks was started from May up until mid-June this year. The biggest scam happened on May 30 which consists of roughly 7,500 attacks per day.

As per the WordFence's report, there are 144 million attacks in May and 133 million in June with tracked 25 IP address. From the list of 25 IPs, the 7 IP addresses from the US and the remaining are from Ukraine. The attack volume was a bit higher in the second half of the month, peaking at over 11 million attacks in a single day. The most attacked WordPress themes in the list were mTheme-Unus, and the most attacked WordPress plugin was WP Mobile Detector.

The CEO and founder of Wordpress Mark Maunder said that attackers are now ready with thousands of scans per day for a particular URL that is being used by new users in setting up their new websites. There are many users who installed WordPress onto their own servers and yet not configured it.

According to Mark, if the user hasn't finished the installation process of their WordPress, then it would be very easy for attackers to swoop and finish the installation for them. After that, they took the control of the database, admin and they able to run the installation and add additional account information in the user's website.

Mark also said that it would be easier for attackers to execute a PHP code on the website. It can add through the theme or a plugin editor, due to which the attackers access the admin, database, and important files. Apart from this, attackers can also execute their PHP code on the website.

Instead of themes and plugins, they can also install the malicious shell on their target directory. Due to this, they will get all the access of all files, accounts and they also make changes anything on the website.

The WordPress development experts and SiteLock's lead security analyst Weston Henry said that attackers always look for the default install files as well as directories for years. He also cleared that an old web scanner called Spiga.py used such things for phpMyFAQ installation. It would be easier for them to complete the installation process without any hassle, and take over the admin's account.

But for the precaution, Maunder advised users to create a code specifically for the .htaccess file in their web directories. In addition, he also suggests that users could install Wordpress zip files and do a one-time click install and complete the installation process. It will be easy for users and attackers cannot succeed.
