SHE BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY! | Ms. 45 (1981) | Movie Review
This movie review is for an absolute classic rape/revenge movie of the grindhouse era from one of its most well known directors Abel Ferrara with 1981's "Ms. 45".
It stars Zoë Tamerlis Lund as Thana, A shy and mute seamstress who goes insane after being attacked and raped twice in one day. She wanders the New York streets at night in a sexy black dress with her attacker’s gun strapped to her garter belt, blowing away any man who tries to pick her up.
Directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Zoë Tamerlis Lund, Albert Sinkys, Darlene Stuto, Helen McGara and Bogey The Dog.

Miles Fairchild x fem!reader
Chapter seven: So now you're back?
A note from Fxchild ! Hi hi so ya I am not dead ! My phone lit broke and I totes forgot my email for this acc but now I'm back and my writers block has never gone away so quickly ! I'm so excited for new chapters to b out soon ! In the meantime while you r waiting for chapters, if you have one shot ideas for characters Finn Wolfhard plays I would b more than happy to write those so you guys aren't waiting forever for a new chapter ! So...finally heres the well awaited chapter seven ! I hope you enjoy this <3
It's the first day of May. It's also been three months since Miles left again. I keep telling Flora that he'll be back soon but I feel my heart break every time I lie to her. I don't think he will be back until I leave for the summer and then he'll leave again when I come back. I feel so guilty..Flora doesn't have a brother that lives with her because of me. But was it all really my fault? He treats me like shit and expects me to tolerate it. Never mind. I don't give a flying fuck about him anymore. He can do whatever he wants, if something happens to him, oh boo hoo not my problem.
It was finally Friday which means I have tomorrow off and I only have to teach Flora a little today because the weather was perfect for horseback riding and I'd promise to let her out today. Today I wore a dark red top with dark grey jeans with black high top shoes. I put my hair in a half up half down clip and did minimal makeup because I was planning on recording myself for an upcoming interview I have for a summer job.
Today I planned out a written test to see Flora's knowledge on geography. I would give her a half an hour to finish up on review and two hours for the test. The test was fairly easy so it shouldn't take her more than an hour or so.
"And begin." I smiled at Flora, setting my timer on my desk which is right across from hers. She immediately begins to read and write down answers while I look over her past work to grade.
Around 45 minutes into the session we hear the front door open. Flora pays no attention to it, I assume it's Ms. Grose coming in from cutting grass or buying groceries so I ignore it and go back to reading old assignments. Around a few minutes went by when I heard footsteps coming to the room. Expecting Ms. Grose I take my feet off the desk and fix my posture without looking at the door. I pretend to be in deep thought with grading when I hear someone clear their throat and hear Flora shout,
"Miles!" She screeches and jumps from her seat running over to hug him. I immediately turn my whole body in my chair with wide eyes. His hair slightly longer and he looks a little taller. He still has the same smirk and dead eyes I saw the night he left. He had on a black coat that ran down to his knees and two bags in his hands that he must have taken when he left. He engulfs Flora into a hug and smiles down at her. I've never seen that smile before. Unlike the ones he had given me this one was warm and loving. I think I had given him that smile before but I wasn't sure. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, he looked up at me and smiled. It was genuine, his eyes brightened. I knew it was real because it wasn't that same old smirk he put on with confidence, he looked painfully awkward and his eyes kept darting between me and the wooden floor. I didn't smile back. I rose up from my seat and walked over to him.
"Flora, why don't you take Miles bags and put them in his room for him sweetheart?" I smiled down at her while patting her hair. She gladly accepts and runs off with his bags. Miles smiles at me again nodding opening his mouth to speak but I cut him off.
"How you been Miles? Where'd you go this time huh? Was it fun?" I say with a sarcastic fake smile, he could tell I was mad.
"Well I-" He begins as I slap his face.
"You scared the shit out of me! Do you know how upset Flora was? She cried for almost a week, blaming herself, poor girl!" I say gritting my teeth with my eyes starting to tear up slightly.
He stared at me with pursed lips before sighing and answering. "He told me to."
I scoff and look at him dumbfounded. "He? Wh-who the hell is 'he' Miles huh? What are you schizo?" I roll my eyes annoyed
"Nobody-nothing. I just..had a dream that's all." He shakes his head staring down at the floor with shame.
"Whatever Miles." I roll my eyes and walk over to Flora's desk to pick up her finished test. "Better go find Flora. Told her she could get out of class early to go ride the horses." I say looking through her test without looking up at Miles.
"You're not gonna come?" He asks quietly, nodding his head to the side, scratching the back of his neck.
I chuckle quietly before placing the test back on the desk. "After the last time?" I walk over to him, picking a pine needle off his jacket. "No thanks." I fake smile before walking out of the room to my own. When I reach my room I fall flat onto my bed before letting out a loud sigh into my pillow. A few minutes later I look out the window. I see Flora and Miles running to the stables and shouting happily. I turn to look at my Calendar, 30 days until I leave. I got sick of sitting in my room bored and decided to go do something, anything in his boring place.
I walk into the kitchen hoping there's an apple or some food sitting out but instead of being greeted with food, it's an unbearable Ms. Grose. I smile at her but she crosses her arms and frowns at me.
"Why are you being so unpleasant towards Miles?" She grits her teeth. "What are you talking about?" I ask trying to pretend I have no clue what's going on. "Talking to him in such an arrogant tone, not accepting his offer and you still wonder why he left? You should be shamed." She spits at me coldly. My face dropped as I start to feel tears in the corners of my eyes.
I quickly ran back up to my room and slam the door. Tears start to stream down my face as I grab my backpack and start shoving stuff into my bag. By the time I zipped it up I hear the front door open again. I quickly put my shoes back on and started heading down the stairs. Walking towards the door I'm wiping my tears, Miles blocks my path.
"Woah woah! Where are you going?" He asks with a concerned look on his face, his hands falling to my shoulders. "Out." I reply while sniffling trying to push past him.
"Um okay, when are you coming back?" He lets go of me, now following me out the door. "I don't know..like..tomorrow? Sunday maybe?" I continue to walk away from him to my car. "Tell me where in case you get black out drunk again and need me to pick you up." He scoffs grabbing onto my wrist.
"You know what Miles? You won't have to worry about me anymore! I won't bother you. It's clear I make you want to leave and you hate me so I'll just leave you alone okay?! Is that what you wa-"
He cuts me off by pressing his lips against mine. It was soft and quick, like he was trying to shut me up and this was the first thing he thought of. He lets go of my wrist and stands up straight looking at me sternly. My cheeks are burning red as I attempt to say something but I can't seem to speak, like there's no air in my lungs.
I lean up against my car door for a moment staring at my feet trying to decide whether to leave or not. I finally look up at him, his head in staring at my feet too. His hands are in his pockets and he's biting his bottom lip nervously. I smile up at him.
"Hey..I'll be back in a little while. I promise I won't make you pick me up this time. Want me to grab you something?" I softly smile, hoping he won't hate me. He shakes his head no with a small smile on his face before letting me get into his car. He watches me drive off before heading back inside.
'29 days..' I whisper to myself as I head into the nearest town, smiling to myself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was extremely rushed so my apologies if it wasn't as great as one of my last chapters ! I promise the next chapter will b better and have more of a plot than this one. Hope you guys liked this and r excited for the next chapter!
1, 2?
Unironically I knew you would ask me the two best questions on this whole damn list, thank you Izzy for being the GOAT.
Song of the year? God what songs even came out this year. I don't think this year was a year where new music happened for me. (One of the biggest hits this year was... Fast Car. Do you remember that??? What???) I'm a little tempted to say Fast Car, but that's cheating on Ms. Tracy Chapman, who is unimpeachably the best version of the song (And wouldn't it kind of suck if the song of the year was just. An inarguably well done but ultimately less meaningful rendition of a song from like 45 years ago) If I can pick songs that I encountered this year but didn't come out this year, I could go on for a while. Lonely by Jamila Woods, All My Girls Like To Fight by Hope Tala, Get Down by Woozy. I think Van Gogh by Mette is great but not the song of the year for me, certainly. Rush by Troye Sivvy? It's more honest but doesn't feel right to me totally. Is It New Years Yet has new toy syndrome, AND it's a holiday song, AND it's a Sabrina Carpenter song that complains about overplayed music. Like. Self aware much? And also means it can kick rocks because that is NOT song of the year material. But I like music with a groovy influence, I'm a little corny, and I can't lie about this kinda thing. I categorically refuse to put Build a Boat on my top anything list, regardless of Spotify telling lies about my listening habits. (This is me lying about this kinda thing). I don't want to repeat a year in review song, either, which kinda makes this harder. I guess I gotta give it to You Wish by Flyana Boss, because it's the only song that's not 1. on my year end list, or 2. a song that had a reservation/caveat/well, actually attached to it.
Album of the year? My two top albums of this year were Something To Give Each Other and Jaguar II, but I have to give it up to Victoria Monet honestly- I didn't take to a piece of music this fast since when I saw Young Empires open for Reptar and fell in love on the first song of the set. I listened to Smoke and I was hooked- maybe it's the drug culture references but joyful and openly honest, maybe it's the slick production and variety on the album, maybe it's that it's not afraid to be goofy as hell ("I'm so deep in my bag, like a grandma with a peppermint" is quite possibly an all timer goofy lyric that still hits the right timber for the braggadocio it's placed as in the song, "It's a bisexual blunt it can go both ways" is just. so fuckin stupid, I love it.), maybe it's the features (Lucky Daye? EARTH WIND AND FIRE???), maybe it's the touch of old hollywood glamour at the end and the clear love of motown sensibilities juxtaposed with her talking about her 4K titties. I don't know man, it just rewired my brain but in a good way. More than that, Victoria made me cognizant of her in the stuff I already liked. Like. She has writing credits/backing vocal credits for Ariana Grande. I CAN HEAR HER IN THE SONGS SHE HELPED WRITE. She's goofy and sexy and has some fun production preferences, and I can hear her sometimes now even when she's composing/producing for other artist. I haven't been able to peg a pop writer this hard since good ol' jackie, and that's because he's everywhere and also in like 3 solo projects and also Taylor Swift's silver bullet. But like I can directly point to how much she worked on Thank You Next and the all time greatest Ariana album, Dangerous Woman. She helped write Body Count, Sin City, On The Way... all songs I liked by other artists, but didn't realize who, you know, helped make. This is not to say I didn't love Troye Sivan this year- and both these artists made my year end retrospective. I really dig Troye's album (Though I run into the issue I have with a lot of albums where I like but don't love the second half of it, which is why Victoria took the W.). Give the songs In My Room or What's The Time Where You Are a listen for sure. It's just. so hard to find an album you unironically vibed with. Unashamedly and openly. I honestly don't care if anyone else likes this album, because I loved it. I'll stream it enough for all of us, a bitch might buy it on vinyl Anyways sorry for running on so long, it's Jaguar II by Victoria Monet, because if we have to say Goodbye, let's make it a Good Bye is something I want to live by now that I've heard it.
Mr. Stern: Maternal Discipline
Patients and staff are in danger as regulators are accused of poor handling of sexual assault allegations made against doctors and nurses, The Independent has been told.
Campaigners and frontline staff who spoke to The Independent warned that professional regulators are not dealing adequately with allegations of sexual assault, harassment and domestic violence.
A study of rulings by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has also revealed that male nurses account for 80 per cent of striking-off orders relating to sexual assault allegations, despite only making up 11 per cent of the register.
The warning comes after horrific details of rape and abuse by police officer David Carrick were uncovered this week.
Dr Rebecca Cox, who helped sparked a major #MeToo movement in medicine and is co-founder of the Surviving in Scrubs campaign group, told The Independent: “There are great similarities, in the recent cases of prolific sexual harassment and assault, between the Met Police and the NHS.
“As an organisation, we have had multiple healthcare professionals contacting us desperate to seek support after facing repeated barriers when trying to report harassment and assault to their employing NHS organisation and regulators such as the GMC.
“Victims find their cases ignored or dropped without good reason, and perpetrators being able to continue working without repercussions. We need a public inquiry into sexism, sexual harassment and sexual assault in healthcare.”
A study of fitness-to-practice hearings by the NMC, shared with The Independent, has found multiple cases in which nurses were prosecuted by the police for domestic violence or sexual assault but faced minimal repercussions under the nursing regulator.
In one case, a nurse convicted of and imprisoned for actual bodily harm against his wife was allowed to produce a “good character statement” during a hearing and was allowed to rejoin the nursing register without restrictions.
In another case, a nurse who had been placed on the register of sex offenders for groping a taxi driver while drunk was given a four-month suspension as the panel considered it a “lower-end” sexual assault.
Nurse Kat Barber, who carried out the study, said there was a “massive misunderstanding” of the context of gender-based violence by the regulator. She added: “In my opinion, [staff and patients] are enormously at risk because of the way [the NMC is] addressing domestic violence and assault.”
However, data shared by the NMC shows that the rate at which sexual assault allegations are progressed to investigation is far higher compared with allegations in general.
Lesley Maslen, executive director of professional regulation at the NMC, said: “There is no place for sexual and domestic abuse in society. We know this disproportionately affects women, who make up the majority of professionals on our register. Our data shows that anyone on our register who is found to have proven allegations of sexual misconduct is highly likely to be struck off.”
Ms Maslen said decisions made by the NMC are reviewed by the Professional Standards Authority, but that the council is always aiming to improve and will reflect on the cases highlighted. Last year the NMC published stronger guidance for those making decisions in such cases – in particular, decisions over their seriousness.
Figures shared by the General Medical Council (GMC) show that more than 500 sexual assault complaints to the doctors’ regulator were dropped between 2018 and 2021. However, data shows that only 45 per cent of sexual assault allegations are closed and not investigated compared to 85 per cent of cases overall.
One doctor told The Independent of her experience referring another doctor to the GMC following a sexual assault. Dr Ash, whose name has been changed, said she was sexually assaulted by a senior male consultant when she was a trainee.
Dr Ash said she didn’t feel she could report the consultant at the time, but referred him to the GMC after an encounter at an event years later. This was just prior to the pandemic, and it has taken three years for the case to be investigated and to conclude.
In its final ruling, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), a statutory committee of the GMC, found there was no case to answer, as it could not be proven that Dr Ash hadn’t given consent.
Dr Ash told The Independent: “The GMC is [just] pushing pieces of paper around. They don’t actually try and find out the truth. They take statements from the witnesses and their names. They have said, ‘Well, it’s totally understandable, you gave them no indication [of non-consent].’
“[The MPTS] said there was no relationship of trust between a consultant and a junior doctor, because the difference in age isn’t that much. They’re so far removed from the reality that they blame us for putting up with behaviour that someone in the office would never put up with, because of the urgency and importance and immediacy of our work with patients.”
Anthony Omo, general counsel and director of fitness to practise at the GMC, said: “There is no place for any form of sexual misconduct in the healthcare services. Sexual assault is a criminal offence, and any doctor who has committed such acts should be investigated by the police.”
He said the GMC works with police and employers to investigate concerns raised, and seeks opportunities to learn from every case.
I sent out 45 queries for my novel ms and received 30 form rejections (the remainder are likely ghosting, which is fine). Not a single request or personalized rejection. I paid for a service where an experienced agent reviewed my query and sample pages and basically said they were fine as is. Betas were positive too. Should I shelve the ms? I feel like I've queried all the agents I could in the genre, and the 100% rejection suggests I've done something wrong, but I don't know what. I'm stumped.
The problem of course is, I have no possible way of knowing. Like -- ??? -- I can't diagnose your problem, because I haven't read the work or the query, I don't know you, etc -- I can't tell you if you really HAVE exhausted all the possible agents in the genre -- and so I can't tell you if you should shelve the ms.
I will say this, though: I think a lot of people think, "Oh I've heard it's hard to get an agent and be published, but honestly, how hard can it be? Like sure it's hard, but it's not HARD hard!" -- or even if they would NEVER say that, secretly, in their innermost heart, they don't think it applies to them. (I'm not saying YOU think this -- just generally, I think a lot of people misunderstand what "hard" really means?) -- the statistics are stacked against you. Agents sign like 1% to 3% of the queries they get, maybe. There are more queries than ever so agents are more swamped than ever.
I don't say this to dissuade you, or anyone -- just being realistic. So knowing that -- something doesn't just have to be "basically good" or "fine as is" or "positive" -- to even be considered it has to be BETTER THAN GOOD. It has to GRAB HOLD OF THE READER'S IMAGINATION from the premise and query alone, and the pages have to live up to the promise of the premise.
So, knowing all that, these are the possible problems -- again I can't tell you WHICH yours is, but it probably falls into one of these buckets:
The query is not great: it doesn't convey the stakes and energy of the book, the killer premise, the characters people will want to root for, etc.
The pages are not great: I assume you sent 10 or so pages to most of those folks -- maybe the query is phenom but the pages are not compelling enough,
There is something broken in the very premise of the book -- like you are basing it on some piece of flawed reasoning that you cant' see because you're too close to it (like this is a romance and the "Hero" is a flat-earther who rejects science -- I'm not saying we can't have a book with those themes -- but they are going to be pretty tough for most agents and editors to swallow as *traits for a hero in a romance novel*)
You are targeting the book poorly -- aiming it at the wrong audience, say, or maybe your comps are too old, didn't do well. I can tell you from experience that A LOT of people think they have written a YA when it is clearly MG (or vice versa) based on voice and themes, or comped books that are completely inapt - this all speaks to just not really being immersed enough in the world of kid's books (yet!)
OR -- ALL OF THIS IS PERFECTLY FINE or even GREAT. But it's just not getting picked up for no reason at all -- it's just not quite there. Maybe it will be with revision -- or maybe you're just ahead of your time, and publishers will catch up eventually -- or maybe this is the first pancake where you were still learning and the NEXT book will be The One.
So perhaps I would not say "shelve it" in a permanent way -- but maybe it's a good idea to put it on the back burner and work on something TOTALLY fresh and different. Then when you are ready to come back to this, distance and experiece and "fresh eyes" will allow you to have a bit more perspective about diagnosing the problem with this one. (And at that point I'll bet there are more/different agents to query, too!)
Tina Turner, Magnetic Singer of Explosive Power, Is Dead at 83
Hailed in the 1960s for her dynamic performances with her first husband, Ike, she became a sensation as a recording artist, often echoing her personal struggles in her songs.
Tina Turner, the earthshaking singer whose rasping vocals, sexual magnetism and explosive energy made her an unforgettable live performer and one of the most successful recording artists of all time, died on Wednesday at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, near Zurich. She was 83.
Her publicist Bernard Doherty announced the death in a statement but did not provide the cause. She had a stroke in recent years and was known to be struggling with a kidney disease and other illnesses.
Ms. Turner embarked on her half-century career in the late 1950s, while still attending high school, when she began singing with Ike Turner and his band, the Kings of Rhythm. At first she was only an occasional performer, but she soon became the group’s star attraction — and Mr. Turner’s wife. With her potent, bluesy voice and her frenetic dancing style, she made an instant impression.
Their ensemble, soon renamed the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, became one of the premier touring soul acts in Black venues on the so-called chitlin’ circuit. After the Rolling Stones invited the group to open for them, first on a British tour in 1966 and then on an American tour in 1969, white listeners in both countries began paying attention.
Ms. Turner, who insisted on adding rock songs by the Beatles and the Stones to her repertoire, reached an enormous new audience, giving the Ike and Tina Turner Revue its first Top 10 hit with her version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Proud Mary” in 1971 and a Grammy Award for best R&B vocal performance by a group.
“In the context of today’s show business, Tina Turner must be the most sensational professional onstage,” Ralph J. Gleason, the influential jazz and pop critic for The San Francisco Chronicle, wrote in a review of a Rolling Stones concert in Oakland in November 1969. “She comes on like a hurricane. She dances and twists and shakes and sings and the impact is instant and total.”
But if the Ike and Tina Turner Revue was a success, the Ike and Tina Turner marriage was not. Mr. Turner was abusive. After she escaped the marriage in her 30s, her career faltered. But her solo album “Private Dancer,” released in 1984, returned her to the spotlight — and lifted her into the pop stratosphere.
Working with younger songwriters, and backed by a smooth, synthesized sound that provided a lustrous wrapping for her raw, urgent vocals, she delivered three mammoth hits: the title song, written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits; “Better Be Good to Me”; and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
Referring to its “innovative fusion of old-fashioned soul singing and new wave synth-pop,” Stephen Holden, in a review for The New York Times, called the album “a landmark not only in the career of the 45-year-old singer, who has been recording since the late 1950s, but in the evolution of pop-soul music itself.”
At the 1985 Grammy Awards, “What’s Love Got to Do With It” won three awards, for record of the year, song of the year and best female pop vocal performance, and “Better Be Good To Me” won for best female rock vocal performance.
The album went on to sell five million copies and ignite a touring career that established Ms. Turner as a worldwide phenomenon. In 1988 she appeared before about 180,000 people at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, breaking a record for the largest paying audience for a solo artist. After her “Twenty Four Seven” tour in 2000 sold more than $100 million in tickets, Guinness World Records announced that she had sold more concert tickets than any other solo performer in history.
‘Well-to-Do Farmers’
Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tenn., northeast of Memphis, and spent her earliest years on the Poindexter farm in Nutbush, an unincorporated area nearby, where she sang in the choir of the Spring Hill Baptist Church.
Her father, Floyd, known by his middle name, Richard, worked as the farm’s overseer — “We were well-to-do farmers,” Ms. Turner told Rolling Stone in 1986 — and had a difficult relationship with his wife, Zelma (Currie) Bullock.
Her parents left Anna and her older sister, Alline, with relatives when they went to work at a military installation in Knoxville during World War II. The family reunited after the war, but Zelma left her husband a few years later and Anna lived with her grandmother in Brownsville.
After rejoining her mother in St. Louis, she attended Sumner High School there. She and Alline began frequenting the Manhattan Club in East St. Louis, Ill., to hear Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm.
“I wanted to get up there and sing sooooo bad,” Ms. Turner recalled in “I, Tina: My Life Story” (1986), written with Kurt Loder. “But that took an entire year.”
One night, during one of the band’s breaks, the drummer, Eugene Washington, handed her the microphone and she began singing the B.B. King song “You Know I Love You,” which Mr. Turner had produced. “When Ike heard me, he said, ‘My God!’” she told People magazine in 1981. “He couldn’t believe that voice coming out of this frail little body.”
In his book “Takin’ Back My Name: The Confessions of Ike Turner” (1999), written with Nigel Cawthorne, Mr. Turner wrote: “I’d be writing songs with Little Richard in mind, but I didn’t have no Little Richard to sing them, so Tina was my Little Richard. Listen closely to Tina and who do you hear? Little Richard singing in the female voice.”
Mr. Turner used her as a backup singer, billed as Little Ann, on his 1958 record “Boxtop.” When Art Lassiter, the group’s lead singer, failed to show up for the recording of “A Fool in Love,” she stepped in. The record was a hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 27 on the pop chart.
Mr. Turner gave his protégée — who by now was also his romantic partner — a new name, Tina, inspired by the television character Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. And he renamed the group the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.
It was a dynamic, disciplined ensemble second only to the James Brown Revue, but until “Proud Mary,” it never achieved significant crossover success. Up to that point it had only one single in the pop Top 20 in the United States, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” in 1961. The group did generate several hits on the R&B charts, notably “I Idolize You,” “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” and “Tra La La La La,” but most of its income came from a relentless touring schedule.
Ms. Turner’s relationship with Mr. Turner, whom she married in 1962 on a quick trip to Tijuana, Mexico, was turbulent. He was dictatorial, violent at times and, in the 1970s, hopelessly addicted to cocaine. She left him in 1976, with 36 cents and a Mobil gasoline card in her pocket, and divorced him two years later. He died of a cocaine overdose in 2007.
“When I left, I was living a life of death,” she told People in 1981. “I didn’t exist. I didn’t fear him killing me when I left, because I was already dead. When I walked out, I didn’t look back.”
Her marriage provided much of the material for the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” with Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne in the lead roles. Ms. Turner rerecorded some of her hits, and a new song, “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” for the film, but otherwise declined to participate. “Why would I want to see Ike Turner beat me up again?” she said at the time.
A Second Career
In 1966, the record producer Phil Spector, after hearing the Ike and Tina Turner Revue at the Galaxy Club in Los Angeles, offered $20,000 to produce their next song, on condition that Mr. Turner stay away from the studio. The result, “River Deep, Mountain High,” is often regarded as the high-water mark of Mr. Spector’s patented “wall of sound.” It failed in the United States, barely reaching the Top 100, but it was a big hit in Britain, where it marked the beginning of a second career for Ms. Turner.
“I loved that song,” she wrote in her 1986 memoir. “Because for the first time in my life, it wasn’t just R&B — it had structure, it had a melody.” She added: “I was a singer, and I knew I could do other things; I just never got the opportunity. ‘River Deep’ showed people what I had in me.”
After she walked out on her marriage, encumbered with debt, Ms. Turner struggled to build a solo career, appearing in ill-conceived cabaret acts, before signing with Roger Davies, the manager of Olivia Newton-John, in 1979. Guided by Mr. Davies, she returned to the gritty, hard-rocking style that had made her a crossover star and would propel her through the coming decades as one of the most durable performers on the concert stage.
Her fellow artists took notice. In 1982, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, of the band and production company known as the British Electric Foundation, recruited her to record the Temptations’ 1970 hit “Ball of Confusion” for an album of soul and rock covers backed by synthesizers. Its success led to a second collaboration, a remake of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” A surprise hit in the United States and Britain, it was the turning point that led to “Private Dancer.”
Ms. Turner followed the runaway success of “Private Dancer” with two more hit albums: “Break Every Rule” (1986) and “Foreign Affair” (1989), which contained the hit single “The Best.”
She made an impact onscreen as well. Ten years after she solidified her persona as a rock ’n’ roller with a riveting performance as the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s film version of “Tommy,” the Who’s rock opera, she drew praise for her performance as Aunty Entity, the iron-fisted ruler of postapocalyptic Bartertown, in “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” in 1985.
That film also provided her with two more hit singles, “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” and “One of the Living,” which was named the best female rock vocal performance at the Grammys in 1986.
In 1991 she and Mr. Turner, in prison at the time for cocaine possession, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (She was inducted again as a solo artist in 2021.) She received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2005 and a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2018.
In 1985 she began a relationship with the German music executive Erwin Bach, whom she married in 2013 after moving with him to Küsnacht and becoming a Swiss citizen. He survives her. Ron, her only child with Mr. Turner, died of colon cancer complications in 2022. Another son, Craig, from her relationship with Raymond Hill, the saxophone player for the Kings of Rhythm, died by suicide in 2018. Her sister, Alline Bullock, died in 2010. Ms. Turner raised two children of Mr. Turner’s, Ike Jr. and Michael.
Complete information on her survivors was not immediately available.
After releasing the album “Twenty Four Seven” in 1999, at 60 and touring to promote it, Ms. Turner announced her retirement. It did not last. In 2008, after performing with Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards, she embarked on an international tour marking her 50th year in the music business.
She announced her retirement again a few years later, but she remained active in other ways. In 2018, she published her second memoir, “My Love Story.”
She and Mr. Bach were executive producers of “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” a stage show based on her life and incorporating many of her hits, which opened in London in 2018 and in Hamburg and on Broadway in 2019; Ms. Turner worked with the show’s choreographer and shared memories with its writers.
While reviews were mixed, the musical earned 12 Tony Award nominations; Adrienne Warren, who starred as Ms. Turner, won the award for best actress in a leading role. “In a performance that is part possession, part workout and part wig,” Jesse Green wrote in a review for The Times, “Adrienne Warren rocks the rafters and dissolves your doubts about anyone daring to step into the diva’s high heels.”
The show closed after four months because of the pandemic lockdown, reopening in October 2021 before closing again a year later and going on the road. There is currently a production touring the U.S., as well as productions in Stuttgart, Germany; Sydney, Australia; and London.
Through it all, Ms. Turner’s music endured.
“My music doesn’t sound dated; it’s still standing strong,” she told The Daily Mail in 2008. “Like me.”
A correction was made on May 24, 2023:
An earlier version of this obituary misstated at one point where Ms. Turner attended high school. As correctly noted elsewhere, it was St. Louis — not East St. Louis, Ill.
A correction was made on May 25, 2023:
Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this obituary misstated the current number of productions of “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.” In addition to the one touring the United States and the one in London, there are productions in Stuttgart, Germany, and Sydney, Australia.
Did you know that monks wrote a lot of love poetry? Monks wrote love poems addressed to other men, including their fellow monks.
Some of the poems are about sweet romantic feelings towards their fellow man. This includes poems about how much the author misses a certain person and wants them to visit, some are about how much they love the man they are writing to, and a few discuss how their souls are intertwined.
Others are much more...explicit.
A 14th century manuscript of Herodotus’ Histories, probably made in the Byzantine city of Mystras
Tumblr media
Herodotus (MS Nn.2.34)
This fourteenth-century manuscript is entirely dedicated to the Histories of Herodotus, considered the founding work of history in Western literature. The manuscript is acephalous due to the loss of two quires, and bears the divisions into nine books, conventionally named after the nine Muses. It was borrowed by Richard Porson (1759-1808), who numbered the books and chapters in the upper margin of recto folios or in the text (cf. Cambridge University Archives, Grace Book Lambda, p. 413).
The manuscript has been cited as K since the Gaisford edition (1824), and previously as Askewianus, because it was part of Anthony Askew's collection.
According to Rosén (Teubner edition, 1987), Nn.2.34 is closely related to Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Laur. Plut. 70.3 (siglum A in Herodotus' editions).
The beginning of the manuscript is wanting; apparently the first two quires are gone: only one folio (f. 1r-v) remains from quire β. The manuscript now consists of one folio (f. 1r-1v), 26 quaternions (ff. 2r-209v) and one folio (f. 210r-210v); ff. 211r-212v are later endleaf. A small stub is preserved between f. 210v and 211r.
Early quire signatures in brown ink, in Greek numerals, on the first folio of each quire, recto. Some have been lost to cropping. They survive on the lower margin right of quire 1 (γʹ f. 2r), quires 3-6 (εʹ-η' ff. 18r, 26r, 34r, 42r), quires 13-14 (ιεʹ-ιϛ' ff. 98r, 106r), quires 17 (ιθʹ f. 130r), and on the upper margin right on quires 18-25 (κ'-κζ' ff. 138r, 146r, 154r, 162r, 170r, 178r, 186r, 194r).
Modern quire signatures in Greek numerals, in pencil, which reproduce and complete the previous series, have been added almost systematically to the first folio of each quire, recto, lower margin right.
Binding with pale brown full leather covering over couched-laminate boards. The spine is cracked, corresponding to the opening at f. 130.
There is decorative tooling on boards and spine; traces of decorative tooling are present on the board edge. Head band is fully detached. Bookblock edges are marbled.
Marbled paper endleaves. The left made flyleaf has come away.
The title (Herodotus MS.) is tooled in gold on the spine.
Binding height: 305 mm, width: 239 mm, depth: 19 mm.
Hand A: ff. 1r-129v
A mixed minuscule script, vertical or slightly slanted to the right, in brown ink, with modest variation in letter size.
Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings usually appear only at the end of lines and rarely elsewhere (e.g. common abbreviation of μεν). Breathings are curved and not joined to accents; mute iota is absent. Accents are often joined to alpha, upsilon and omega.
Alpha is drawn in two shapes: a rounded one and another one with a long oblique stroke; beta displays in bilobate shape; delta is triangular, with a small eyelet closed. Pi has a elongated horizontal stroke, and so also tau and theta, especially if at the beginning of the line. The modern nu, small gamma, eta, kappa, lambda and sigma telikon are presents.
The epsilon-rho ligature appears in a distinctive form in which the upper part forms a closed loop. Tau-rho ligature is overlapping
Punctuation used includes the middle and upper point, lower comma and full stop.
Tails are rarely flourished into the lower margins, e.g. f. 127r.
An identification with Manuel Tzycandyles (RGK I 255) has been proposed (see Hemmerdinger 1981).
Hand B: ff. 130r-210v.
Hand B displays a mixed minuscule close the model of Hand A, but slanting slightly to the right, with denser text. There is an evident moderate variation in letter size. Syllabic abbreviations and superscript word endings are not limiteted to the end of lines.
Breathings are curved, circumflex accent is normaly not link to vowels. Mute iota is absent.
Tails are rarely flourished into the lower margins.
[i-iii] + 1-212 + [iv]. Modern foliation in pencil in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner, recto.
Note by Richard Porson on f. [ii] verso: "Vide editionem Herodoti a Gronovio editam Lugduni Batavorum apud Samuelem Luchtmans anno MMCCXVI: Pag. 32. l. 13 μάχη σφέων ἦν ἀφ' ἵππων κ.τ.λ.". with reference to the 1715 edition by Jacobus Gronovius.
Porson also marked the number of the books and chapters in the upper margin of rectos in Greek numerals, referring to the last chapter of the folio: e.g. f. 6r α, ρε = Lib. I chap. 105. Chapters numbers are occasionally in the text in Arabic numerals.
The manuscript belonged to Anthony Askew (b. 1722, d. 1774), physician and book collector.
Man, I just... legit crying over a sidequest in legends arceus
A chimecho has been hanging from the roof of an old woman named Ida's house, and while she's not scared of it, she's not comfortable either, and wants you to find another place for it. You try a bunch of different spots, to try and find a place that matches chimecho's interests, and none fit. And when Ida realizes that chimecho is a gentle pokemon that just enjoys her company, of course she can't help but invite it to stay
That's what pokemon is all about. That's it, right there
something i love that Farigiraf has done that’s happened with previous cross-gen evos is that it has retroactively made girafarig a baby
for over 20 years girafarig was just a regular one stage pokemon, fully grown, as it were, but now it evolves! so it has thus comparably become a baby
this happened to misdreavus, to sneasel, to porygon, to basculin, to several more, and now girafarig has joined. I love it. I look forward to so much fanart of parental Farigiraf looking after their tiny girafarig
everybody likes to talk in the Steve Rogers tag about how he'd get brought into the TVA for miscellaneous canonically permitted time crimes but I think we all know the #1 actual crime of pruned Steve Rogers variants is trying to take a vacation.
Rating: Explicit
Pairing: Roy Mustang/Edward Elric
Summary: A year after the Promised Day, Roy pays a weekend visit to Resembool and realizes that things are changing. For example: Ed got hot???
Contents: underage, omegaverse AU, bottom Roy
Notes: This is what I've been trapped in the last six months instead of working on frostshield fic, dear followers 😔
my takeaway from the first episode of She-Hulk is that Jen has a whole library of Steve-centered RPF reader-insert fic bookmarks that Bruce knows nothing about.
The Avengers (2012): Ant-Man (Hank Pym), one of the comics' founding Avengers, has nothing to do with the founding of the MCU Avengers.
Ant-Man (2015): Scott Lang becomes Ant-Man, succeeding Hank Pym, who originated the identity in the 1960s (the decade the comic book character debuted).
Avengers: Endgame (2019): Ant-Man (Scott Lang) goes back in time to the Battle of New York as part of the Avengers' time heist, retconning himself into being involved in the founding of the MCU Avengers.
Hawkeye (2021): For some reason Ant-Man appears in the Battle of New York musical number in Rogers! The Musical, even though we all know he technically had nothing to do with the original event. Somehow it's probably Scott Lang's fault.
Ms. Marvel (2022): Scott Lang does podcast interviews. At least one vendor at Avenger Con is selling merch referencing America's Ass. It becomes immediately obvious that Ant-Man appearing as a character in Rogers! The Musical is 100000% Scott Lang's fault, and he probably didn't even do it on purpose.
other age gap ships: dance around the subject, outright ignore it, or put all their energy into the weirdness and angst potential
RoyEd: Trisha Elric was 20 years old when she got pregnant by a guy who'd been stuck in his late 40s for more than 400 years, so really Ed is only carrying on a noble family tradition!
Erik, bursting into the room: Who wants to make 50 bucks?
Peter, Scott, and Jean: ...
Peter: How?
Erik: I need someone to take the fall.
Charles, from the other room: Oh my god.
Scott: What did you do?
Erik: I can’t tell you. Yes or no, no questions asked.
Charles, louder: Oh. My. God!
Peter: ...Make it a hundred.
Erik: Done.
Charles: OH MY GOD!
Erik, grabbing Peter: You’re a good son. DON’T WORRY CHARLES! I’VE GOT HIM!
[Watching the news]
Erik: I’ll kill him!
Charles, not even looking up: You can’t just kill every President you disagree with, dear.
Peter: Isn’t saying you want to kill the President like a felony or something?
Charles: Peter, everything your father does is a felony.
Also I think it’s very cool that shows like Moon Knight and Ms Marvel are showing Egypt and Pakistan as places that people actually live and not just. deserts.
