Another zine I want to work on is for Billy Elliot's 25th anniversary next year. I wouldn't say this was my gay awakening, but it's certainly remained a great love given my teen obsession with Jamie Bell and how often it appeared on free-to-air television. It sits alongside But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) and Beautiful Thing (1996) as films that made me feel privileged to have grown up gay when I did.
If you've got something nerdy to say about this film, DM me with it (or add comments to a reblog) the second you finish reading.
The zine would talk about Billy Elliot's 'controversy': the debates about whether it counted as queer, and grooming allegations against Daldry for his sheer proximity to a young actor. It would also include how my crush on Jamie Bell developed over the last twenty-five years. But tbh that's all just filler. What I really want to talk about is how its big, nerdy intertextual references make it media created for us rather than a cishet audience.
First reference is from history, because why choose the 1984 miner's strike as your setting if your film had nothing to say about their contributions to Gay Liberation? Perhaps a little headcanon, but no less important to highlight this largely forgotten change in Labour's policy-making both in the UK and here in Australia.
And because we don't have a world of time, and because it was a helpful reminder when it came out, we lean on the 2014 docudrama PRIDE. This one follows Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), who crossed prejudices to show their solidarity during the 1984 strike — going as far as holding a club fundraiser featuring Bronski Beats as their headliner.
LGSM's contributions were ultimately refused by the Miner's Union, and yet they left a lasting impression on mining communities and labour unions. LGSM were subsequently joined by hundreds of miners during Gay Pride 1985 who had by then voted to include gay and lesbian rights in their party portfolio. It was the first time a major political party in the West had committed to supporting queer rights.
Next we slide hard into Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, which premiered in 1995. This modern re-queerification of the classic ballet by gay composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky has the prince assume part of the princess's role as he pursues a mysterious Stranger (the swan). Here Bourne goes as far as to replace the entire cast of traditionally female swans with sweaty, bare-chested lads.
The 2012 capture watchable [ here ] stars homosexual hearthrob Dominic North as the forlorn prince.
Now, in Billy Elliot, Mrs Wilkinson recounts the classic tale to Billy as they listen to Swan Lake on the ferry. It's a wonderful scene where Wilkinson begins with reverence and dramatics, but ends with her usual boredom, leaving young Billy both confused and unsatisfied with the plot. To me this echoes the desire among 90s content producers to change how we told queer stories.
In Billy Elliot's closing scene, however, we see a 25yo Billy leap onto the stage as Bourne's Stranger rather than the classic princess (even nerdier than that, we see Bourne's original Stranger, Adam Cooper, playing a 25yo Billy Elliot). You realise in future screenings that the opening scene is also an homage to Bourne's Swan Lake: much as the young prince begins his story in bed, dreaming a swan hottie will save him from becoming a man; Billy begins jumping on his bed, flapping his arms, dreaming of something beyond the life he's expected to grow into.
Quick tangent via The Eagle (2011), starring Channing Tatum as Roman legionnaire Marcus and Jamie Bell as his British slave Esca. Now, do we condone slavery? Absolutely not. But we do enjoy watching Tatum and Bell get super clingy as they traip across the countryside in what has to be the most romantic bro film of all time.
Relevance to Billy Elliot? Vague. But hear me out.
The film's based on Rosemary Sutcliff's The Eagle of the Ninth (1954), which ends with Marcus settling down as a farmer with Esca and a Briton wife named Cottia who doesn't appear in the film. Subsequent novels follow the father's ring as it's passed down Marcus's bloodline, meaning they shagged down to produce an heir but implying literally nothing else.
But imagine removing Marcus's wife from the equation altogether (all women, actually), adding 'submission' to the male bonding elements of your film, reprimanding disaster bisexual Channing Tatum for suggesting it's a romance, and then expecting a professional homosexual like me to believe this doesn't count as another gay Jamie Bell movie. That's all I'm saying.
Lastly, I want to talk about Elton John co-writing the musical, and Tom Holland as the most famous Billy. I want to talk about Spanish Billies Pau Gimeno and Cristian López acting together in Paraiso (2021-22). I want to talk about Kate Mara (married to Bell) as Patty Bowes in the first season of POSE (2018-21), and her sister Rooney as Therese Belivet in Carol (2015). I want to talk about so many things.
What would YOU want to write about this film?

Billy Elliot: 20 Years Later.
Ever since I watched Rocketman last year, I found myself indulging more and more in Jamie Bell’s movies and works. And the most recent one I watched that got my attention was ‘Billy Elliot’. It tells the story of an eleven years old boy from Durham Yorkshire, a small mining village in the North East of England during the miners’ strike in 1984. This setting definitely adds grit to the story.
The movie starts out with Billy taking boxing lessons, which he doesn’t really like. And one day, his boxing coach announces that the boxing hall will be shared with girls his age who take ballet lessons. He decides to give it a try and soon enough realizes that it is his true passion. But his father and brother, two homophobic neanderthals, opposed to Billy’s dancing on the basis that “boys do football”. He, therefore, decides to take the lessons clandestinely with the dance teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, who from the very beginning was found of his talent and saw something in him. She pushes him to register for a competition to enter a prestigious ballet school in London. And then, during Christmas, the season of miracles, Billy’s father sees his child dancing and realizes how talented he is. So that’s when he; Jackie Elliot, decides to leave the strikers’ camp and join the workers to be able to pay for Billy’s school. And despite his prejudices, he accepts and believes that dancing will surely provide Billy with a better future. Billy successfully passes the exam and convinces the jury within a moment of goosebumps and nerve wreck. Twenty years later, Billy became a ballet dancer and we are witnessing his spectacular debut with the presence of his proud father and brother, and his childhood friend Michael.
There’s no doubt that this movie influenced a generation of male dancers since its release in 2000. And Jamie Bell’s remarkable central performance struck a chord with boys who love dancing everywhere. This movie helped to create a shift in the public perception of male dancing.
Billy Elliot offers us a conversation that 20 years later, we still need to have which is ‘does liking feminine interests make a boy gay?’. Which is definitely not the case and Bily is a perfect example. And at 11 years old, Billy has already internalized that dancing is something he shouldn’t be doing.
Billy is not gay, he just wants to dance, and back in 1984 and in 2000 and maybe even now in 2020 that is an important message. It’s very important to remind boys that they can be straight and still explore interests encoded as feminine, it’s totally okay.
But here still remains the underlying assumption that being gay or feminine would be bad. Even twenty years later, and the legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries. People still use the ‘I don’t want life to be hard for you’ when someone comes out to them. It sounds so old-fashioned yet it is still being said.
And with the emergence of technology and social media, we’re defining children’s gender earlier and earlier. And through all this progressivity, heteronormativity is still the standard. The ones who come out are usually gay, trans, or nonbinary.
And as the movie handles the issue of ‘feminine’ interests in boys, we can see it’s more socially punishable than girls who pursue ‘masculine’ interests and expressions. Again, society has labeled that being feminine is bad and children grow up internalizing that.
Billy Elliot tells the story of a lot of boys around the world. Boys who grew up being told what they like is wrong; be it dancing, makeup, or even cooking. I found this movie absolutely mesmerizing and fantastic as the issue of gender roles has always captured my mind. I truly think it’s one of those movies that can be considered as a historical milestone.

Behind the Voices of Brave
It’s always fascinating to know who is behind the voices of our favourite, animated characters. So let’s revisit Brave
Merida – Kelly Macdonald
Authentic voice acting is just as important as the animation itself. If the movie is supposed to take place in Scotland, it should also sound the part. Macdonald is a Scottish actress that is also known for Gosford Park (Mary Maceachran) and T2 Trainspotting (Diane)
Fergus - Billy Connolly
Connolly was also born and raised in Scotland, but did you know he’s an accomplished banjo player in the band “Humbelbums”? He’s best known for his roles as Dain in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Il Duce in The Broondock Saints. I think the best part of this casting is his similarity to Fergus himself.
Elinor – Emma Thompson
Just looking at this woman gives me severe mom vibes (She even has the mom haircut.) Thompson was born into a Scottish/English family of actors. Movies, you may know her from are Sense and Sensibility (Elinor Dashwood), Last Christmas (Petra) and Nanny McPhee (as Nanny McPhee)
The Witch – Julie Walters
I absolutely adore this woman and it’s such a shame that she didn’t have more screen time as the witch. If you don’t know Julie Walters, how dare you? She has starred in Mamma Mia as Rosie, Harry Potter as Molly Weasley and Billy Elliot as Mrs. Wilkinson.
2/5 - Ivy

A must-see for any fan. A good capture overall. There is one head that blocks the actors from the waist down in the center of the stage. There is a three-minute blackout during The Schuyler Puppets and a three minute blackout during the finale, as well as a couple other quick dropouts. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show is 72 minutes on one disc. Includes playbill scans. A bunch of clips from the opening night of Sweeney Todd in Manila! Shot 3rd row at the balcony.

Billy Elliot (7/12) Movie CLIP - Dancing for Dad (2000) HD
“FILM DESCRIPTION: Brassed Off meets My Name Is Joe in this gritty coming-of-age drama about a young son of a poor English coal miner who dreams of being a ballet dancer. The film is set during a 1984 miners' strike in Durham county, where angry clashes between picketers and cops in riot gear are nearly daily occurrences. Among the most vociferous protesters are Tony (Jamie Driven) and his dad (Gary Lewis), who nags his youngest son Billy (Jamie Bell) into taking boxing classes. Though the kid can do some fancy footwork, he can't take a punch. One day at the gym, he notices a ballet class taught by hard-bitten Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters), whose young daughter dares him to join. When his father gets wind of this less-than-manly pursuit, he pulls him from the class. Sensing a raw and natural talent, Mrs. Wilkinson offers to teach the lad for free in preparation for the local auditions to the Royal Ballet School. When Tony gets in trouble with the cops, Billy is forced to miss the trials, leading to a confrontation between Billy's pop and Ms. Wilkinson. Though at first he steadfastly refuses to consider his son's desires of going into ballet, he comes to realize that this might be the one shot that Billy has in order to escape the danger and grinding tedium of a miner's life, so he sets out to earn the money by any means necessary to send his son to London. This film is the directorial debut of renowned British stage director Stephen Daldry.”

Julie Walters as ballet teacher Mrs. Wilkinson in Billy Elliot (2000). Julie was born in Birmingham and has 99 acting credits, from a 1975 episode on the telly, her first feature, Educating Rita in 1983, to a short now in production. Julie was also Mrs. Weasley in all six Harry Potter movies, and in both Mamma Mia movies, and Mary Poppins Returns. Educating Rita is her other entry among my best 1,001 movies.

For development along the way, I initially had in mind to create illustrated, fine liner drawings based on the arts industry but the more I thought about what I could create, the idea of actually using materials often used in the theatre world became more prominent and sounded more interesting and challenging. My Purpose for my project/ concept is to showcase different skills involved in the industry e.g., make-up, costumes, design, lighting etc for the world to get a sense of how many different elements and teams of people are involved for each single show that is produced and running. Its personally important for me to showcase all of the different areas as there isn’t always enough recognition or appreciation of just how many elements are involved – leading on from how many people all across the globe work in each different department.
My Target audience is focused on everyone in the world so they can see how the industry is being affected but also its for the global theatre industry to show appreciation and recognition for every person’s hard work involved. Also due to this project being a printed book with my outcomes inside, it ties in well with representing the industry for the audience as its fairly standard to have programmes for each production showcasing images similar to my outcomes. Some main problems I faced along the way was mainly the costume making element side of things due to some materials I had not worked with or using a different kind of stich on my sewing machine meaning having to sometimes complete restart some pieces in order to achieve my goal. Other minor problems I faced were drawing based art if I messed up on a particular section of a drawing but was always easily resolved with a rubber and starting again. My project took quite a smooth journey from idea to creation, a few minor problems here and there but nothing serious when reflecting back. I was slightly worried at a certain point if I would complete all of my outcomes in the time I had given myself but I surprised myself and completed it which made me feel successful. In regards to new learning, again it was going back to the costume making side of things due to working with new materials and process but it was achieved successfully in the end.
Section Two: Media, Skills/Techniques, Practical Process
Materials and techniques I used throughout my project mainly revolved around hand-based techniques – hand draw illustrations with pencils, fine liners, posca pens, paper alongside print making in the onsite learning lessons such as lino printing using sheets of lino, lino cutter tools, inks and a press as well as screen printing using my own drawings, inks, a screen and a squeegee alongside etching design printing which involved aluminium 5X5cm plates, inks, acid, ink rollers and a press. The Materials I used to create my final outcomes for my book involved a range of different fabrics from cotton & lycra to faux leather either used with a sewing machine or hand stitches to create the costumes, thousands of glass crystals/ flat back shapes (large crystals formed into different shapes able to be sewn on glued on). 3 lace front wigs (used in the theatre industry allowing the lace to blend in with the actor skin with handtied hairs along the front to create more realistic hairlines) in which alongside these I used lots of hairs grips/ pins, hairspray and heated rollers/ straighteners in order to create the different styled hairstyles for each character. Make-Up was a big part of the transformations especially for my ‘Kinky Boots’ Drag creation alongside my Mrs Wilkinson from ‘Billy Elliot’ and painted the iconic theatre mask symbol on the face. For transporting these creations into my book, I used my phone camera to take to the photographs followed by Photoshop into order to render, retouch and add the final details to each page before sending the outcomes to be printed. One of the experiments/ new skills was learning to use lycra to make the leotard for the ‘Billy Elliot’ transformation. I had never worked with lycra before so it was defiantly a new challenge for to get my head around, always constantly making sure I’ve holding the fabric taught to ensure it was being sewn properly and would look how I expected when being worn. It took a few different attempts to sew the pieces and costume together before I fully got the hang of working with the machine and material together but overall, I am proud of myself and of how the outcome turned out.
Most of development/ journey is documented in journal but all uploaded on my online blog by creating documents/ images explaining the processes step by step to show how I achieved & created my outcomes. Personally, for me I feel like my project has met the purpose of what I had in mind and my message to come across successfully. An artist who I looked in conjunction with my work was Gregg Barnes who is Tony award winning West End & Broadway costume designers. I absolute adore his work and always inspires me to push myself to create costumes with lots of attention to details to hopefully come across as visually exiting like his work.
Section Three: Evaluation Methodology
My strengths of my project definitely are visible in my theatrical outcomes e.g., costumes, make-up, wigs etc as these are my strong points and what I am most passionate about creating and showcasing. My weaknesses of my project are most probably in the areas of documentation and writing/ uploading work in which I need to be more consistent with in the future. For my final presentation, my main outcome will be my professionally printed book and my journal/ blog as well as my sketchbook presenting all of the work I have completed in this one project. During this project I have learnt to push myself in exploring new materials/ techniques to work with in order to create my outcomes as well as gaining confidence in print making and being pleased with the results. For the planning side of the project, I created a visual mock up of what my book would look like/ feature as well as explanation on how I was going to create each page. Feedback helped me to push myself in order to try my hardest in presenting who my audience is as it is such a big part of the project.

Billy Elliot (2000): #1485/2422.
Billy Elliot, put simply, is your standard inspirational fare. Kid wants to become a ballet dancer, receives pushback from his father, father does a complete 180, kid gets to live out his dream. It’s cute enough, but I can’t say I wasn’t hoping for a little more. More about Mrs. Wilkinson’s relationship with her husband and motivations, things between Billy and her daughter, Michael and his homosexuality, Billy’s mother (and her death), etc. It’s called Billy Elliot, meaning the focus is certain to be squarely on him, yes; however, many of the (relatively) unexplored sideplots affect him immensely, and so I feel the movie could’ve greatly benefited from fleshing them out more. Even the union sideplot felt undercooked, there only to give his dad an emotional scene wherein he aims to go back to work for the purposes of funding his son’s audition. Likewise, his dad’s (and brother’s) change of heart didn’t feel fully earned. He showed his dad his dancing and passion and... that was kinda it. Problem solved and moving on, according to the movie. From an absolute no to even practicing ballet to a dad (and brother) fretting and crying over his son’s pursuit of becoming a ballet dancer, this not long after they’d had a meltdown when his teacher notified them of his missing the audition. Did it warm my heart to see such a switch? Yes. Did I simultaneously feel tricked into these fuzzy feelings? Also yes. I needed more and the same can be said about almost everything in this movie. Did it stop me from liking it? No. Did it keep my enthusiasm for it muted, though? Yes.

Billy Elliot review
Billy Elliot is a British social realism drama/dance movie, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Lee Hall. It was released in 2000 and the leading actor is Jamie Bell who embodies the character of William Billy Elliot, along with Gary Lewis who plays the role of his father Jackie, Jamie Draven as his brother Tony, and Julie Walters who plays Mrs Sandra Wilkinson, Billy’s ballet teacher as supporting actors. It is an inspiring tale of pursuing dreams, breaking conventions and stereotypes, and struggling. The plot of the movie is set in 1984-85 in a town on the north-east of England called Everington at the time of the coal miners’ strike.
The plot of the movie revolves around the titular character, Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), who, after witnessing a dance class which was held in the same gym as his boxing class, he decides he wants do dance as well. The ballet teacher, Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters), sees something in Billy, a spark and stature of a true dancer, and wants him to continue practicing with the girls. This, however, does not bode well with Billy's father, Jackie (Gary Lewis), who thinks dancing is for girls and that his son should do what „lads do; football... boxing... or wrestling.“ Whether this conflict resolves itself, you'll have to see for yourself, but it is a fascinating portrayal of struggle, both Billy's and of the Elliot family. Speaking of his family's struggle, another plot that is unfolding throughout the movie is that of a miner's strike setting in a town of Durham County in which both Elliot's father and Elliot's brother, Tony (Jamie Draven), participate. Their struggle is that of an everyday family, and is what puts this movie into the social realism genre.
What really impressed me while watching the movie is how easily we can relate to, or empathize with pretty much all the characters. Billy is a kid who just wants to feel happy and free, and to do what he loves. His father and brother are good people, members of the lower middle-class who struggle with unemployment, and just want to provide a good life for Billy. Even Billy’s friend, Michael Caffrey (Stuart Wells), who we find out is gay is also a likeable character, and we can see that being gay is something that comes naturally to young adolescents, and the movie did not make a big deal out of it. The characters may find it odd, but they all quickly accept it. The situations in which Billy sees that Michael fancies wearing dresses and puts make-up on his face, or when he kisses Billy and when Debbie and Billy spend time alone in her room and she speaks of her parents not having sex, later on having an intense situation of their own, all show how children tend more towards accepting differences than the adults. It is seen everywhere in the world. Children and young adults are more open to experimenting and prone to accepting diversity in oppose to adults who are too bound by rules and tradition. Billy is stunned by seeing his best friend in girls’ clothes but he accepts it. He is teaching us all a lesson that we should accept people as they are without judging them. An interesting part of the movie is the discourse of what is masculine and what is not. At one point, Billy asks Michael whether it is better to be a miner or a dancer, questioning if he is doing not the wrong but the manly thing. His father and his brother, and the rest of the men in Everington are miners, raging on the streets during the strike, portraying the men who fight, who want change and do not fear anything. And then there is Billy, wanting to be a “swan”. Another aspect in the movie that I found interesting was that Billy did not have a mother, and that really influenced him. He was a young person, growing up surrounded by aggressive men. The only woman near him was his grandmother, but she could not take care of him because she could not even take care of herself (we see her wandering on the graveyard, not able to find her daughter’s grave). The only woman that helped Billy, and ultimately changed his future, was Mrs. Wilkinson. A woman with her own problems- not fulfilling the dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer and having marriage problems, decides to help Billy get away from it all, from the grim everyday in that town, people full of prejudice and no understanding for others.
When it comes to technicalities, the highlight of the movie is the superb acting by all of the actors, especially Jamie Bell, and when you add all the dancing he has done in the movie, you have to give the boy some credit. Since dancing is one of the key elements of the movie, the choreography team had a lot to do, and it all paid out wonderfully since everything is easier when you have an actor who already had dancing lessons beforehand. Staying true to the classic British cinema, the movie doesn’t have any special effects added to it, emphasizing the social realism in the movie. The colour palette of the movie might seem monotonous at times, since the movie is set in England, a country known for its rainy and bleak weather, but it adds to the atmosphere of the movie, and the struggle of Billy’s family. Another thing that added to the experience are the songs used in various scenes where Billy is dancing; “I love to boogie” and “Children of Revolution” by T. Rex, “Burning Up” by Eagle Eye Cherry, and many more, are a welcome treat to all music lovers, and it adds another fine layer to the character of Billy Elliot. They are all upbeat songs, made to make you want to dance, and you will definitely catch yourself tapping your foot or nodding your head while watching the movie.
This movie also deals with many social issues, such as difference between the classes (working class and the upper class), gender equality, sexuality, breaking stereotypes, etc. Billy’s father and brother both represent the working class, and the struggles of being expendable. Billy’s father even goes against his own ideals later in the film (working in the mines despite of the strike) in order to help Billy follow his dream. It’s a struggle many of us faced at least once in our life, trying to do the right thing while not knowing what the right thing is. Billy represents a noble notion of gender equality, being able to do what you want and love without being judged on trivial matters such as femininity and masculinity. When it comes to sexuality, I already mentioned Billy’s friend, Michael, is gay, and the movie does not make a big deal out of it. Sure, the reveal of it was strange for the characters, since they did not expect it, but they all learn to accept and respect it, especially Billy, who didn’t have any gripes with the fact.
All in all, the movie is fantastic and worth watching, and deserves all the praise it has received. I usually do not watch this kind of movies, but it is certainly a jewel in the British contemporary cinema. It stands as a timeless reminder that we, as human beings, need to learn to accept each other, and to celebrate diversity. I give the movie a 7.5/10 for its superb acting, and thought-provoking themes. If you like realistic everyday/everyman movies, where you don’t know whether the ending will be a happy or a sad one, this is the movie for you. If it isn’t your type of a movie, it is still worth watching, as it will not leave you indifferent.
