I'm thinking about joining My Peak Challenge this year. Does anyone know about it and can you tell me more about it? Have you done it or know someone who's done it and were you/they successful? Did you/they enjoy it? What is it all about?

I want to do something about my lack of fitness, and so I went to the Y today... it's a goof time to read. #mpc2016 (at Atlee Station Family YMCA)

Today marks my own Day 60, having started my own (and first!) peak challenge a little late this year.
As such, I wanted to write a little blog post about it – commemorate it, someway, just because I feel like I am genuinely a different person to the girl I was 60 days ago. I don’t think that’s an exaggeration. Compared to some Peakers stories, I am not going to lie… I feel as if mine is quite dull… but I thought I might as well chuck it out there, if for no other reason than so I can go read it back later on.
60 days ago… I was ok. I was sort of just bobbing along, not unhappy by any means but just… there a bit, I guess. Now that isn’t to say I didn’t have many awesome things in my life – my friends and my family are amazing, and any meet up with any of them reminds me of that. I also love my jobs – I always wanted to work in heritage and while I don’t have a 5 days a week, 9 -5 permanent role, I am working 2 regular jobs, get to meet and work with a load of different people, and am getting valuable experience for the future. I am never ever bored and I love the variety of the stuff I get to do. I am very lucky in the sense I genuinely enjoy my work.
But, I was perhaps lying to myself. I said I was all good but the truth was I was lonely, maybe a bit anxious about where I was heading and if things were going to change, if I could really change it and… yeah. There were a few bits spinning round my head and I was bobbing along.
Summer was on the way though… as was Outlander season 2. Now I had meant to watch s1 when it first aired but I was at uni and busy with that so missed it unfortunately. However, I caught up over Easter at last and just feel in love. With Scotland, with Jamie and Claire, with Bear McCready’s AMAZING soundtrack… just all of it was magical and kind of got me caught up in a way I haven’t got caught up with a series since Harry Potter. I was a 90s baby and in the thick of the Potter generation so that’s kind of the highest praise I can give. At the moment, I am on MOBY and dreading getting to the end and the back of the queue to wait for Bees!
Now at the same time I was falling in love with this love story, I went to the evening reception of one of my oldest friends wedding. I have known him from before I can remember and seeing him with his wife and their little daughter was just so lovely. He is the nicest guy, they are the loveliest family and they are going to have such an awesome life together.
It was maybe the week afterwards, after a week of watching Outlander and thinking about the wedding I let the truth hit me. I was tired of feeling stuck in one spot, tired of the worries I was letting bog me down, and even more tired of being alone. I had been single for five years at this point.
I should mention here that I read Mary Beth Evans’ PLANK blog weekly – it is a platform for inspired living and really lives up to its name. I read back through some old posts, reminded myself that there really is only one person who could change my life…. So, as MPC official period kind of came to a close, I brought my first pair of trainers for years, a fit bit and started running round the local area.
And it was a relief. It’s amazing how it clears yours head, the time it gives you to think. I ran a couple of years back, but this time it was different. MPC gives me a focus and a goal. I listen to my ipod when I run – I leave my phone at home. Its half an hour where I reflect on what I want to do over the last couple of days, what I want to do over the next day or two, can give myself a good talking too if needed, and take five minutes to remind myself of the good stuff I am doing. Running just motivates me, gets rid of my stress, makes me feel positive and has put me in a much better place. I like me more, I feel as if I am worrying less, sleep better, feel more confident and the timing could be coincidental…
But last month (on day 34!), I met someone. He is kind, funny and makes me feel safe and did so within an hour of us meeting. It’s very early days for us (and I know it could all end tomorrow) but I already feel like it’s going somewhere. So far, we’ve been on three dates and have another couple planned. We text daily and he makes me laugh – a lot. Like I said, its early days but we are already joking about how in sync we are. We’re not really labelled up yet – but seem to be heading that way. For now, to me he is just, well.... ‘my person’. Just that person you can chat to, laugh with, know they will text back eventually, even if they are busy right then. It is all new to me and we’re not rushing anything so it’s not complicated or stressful. Right now, it is just so great to have him in my life, and I look forward to hanging out with him more and more.
I am a more confident, more settled and a happier person than I was 60 days ago. I feel more at home in my own skin than I have in a while. I am more active, more proactive and trying every day to be more positive. I think it was a couple of blogs ago that Mary Beth Evans said that she feels angry with herself if she gets to the end of the day and thinks she has had a bad one – because that’s a day wasted and you only get one shot at life. Since reading that, I have felt the same.
Also, just going on twitter and Instagram and seeing pics poster from people completing their own Peak challenges, literally from all over the world at all ages is just incredible. It is great to be a small part of that community.
So stats time:
When I started MPC challenge I could run 0.6 of a mile without stopping. Earlier this week, I ran 1.2 before needing a rest.
In the 60 days before MPC I didn’t run at all. I ran 32 miles over the past 60 days.
The most steps I have taken in one day is 23,942. The most in a week 100,050 (I am slightly obsessed with my fit bit stats lol!)
I have even lost a few of pounds, not that that was a goal. I have always been quite thin, so it’s simply an excuse to eat more cake really in the interest of a balanced, healthy lifestyle!
I also donated to Bloodwise and I think that’s the best thing about getting involved with MyPeakChallenge - me going for a run hasn’t just benefitted me.
So yeah… this is MPC record for 2016. My first one anyway. It’s been so much fun and my life has changed in more ways than I could have expected since it begun. Thank you so, so much to Sam Heughan and the entire My Peak Challenge team from the bottom of my heart.
Today might be day 60, but tomorrow the clock resets and it is once again day 1… And I have got 60 fresh days in which to run more than 32 miles.
Game on, ye ken?

Excuse me while I rant...
I have real issues with people (i.e. celebs) recommending things they can’t follow up on.
It’s bad enough that while attempting to post a “veggie” resource, he posted a vegan resource. These two are not the same - vegan is an ethical choice, not a dietary one. You don’t go vegan for a month, you would however follow a plant-based diet for a month.
I have been a pescatarian for a very long time. This is the same style of wild fish-only vegetarianism that Sam plans to follow next month, though he didn’t indicate that up front. This should be an easy transition for him as he was pescatarian through his childhood. A lot of people haven’t though, and since they don’t know how to use Google either, they’ll just direct their ignorant questions and comments to Sam instead.
So here’s the answers to some tweets before my head explodes. I’ll preface this by saying I don’t care what anyone eats, but don’t make stupid comments.
“I can’t do that. I need protein.”
Research shows humans need much less protein than traditionally thought. Dr. Colin T. Campbell, researcher and author of the China Study, and his colleagues found evidence suggesting that we only need 10 percent of nutrients from protein, which can be easily consumed through carbohydrates. Excessive protein is hard on our kidneys and too much animal protein can lead to various diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Athletes and bodybuilders need more protein but they also need more calories – with enough calories comes enough protein.
“I’m anemic, so I have to eat meat.”
Animal protein is hard to digest, leading to malabsorption of some nutrients while plant-based protein is easily absorbed by our bodies and has been found to be a complete protein. Plant-based products also provide other essential nutrients such as fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Where do you think the cow you’re eating got the iron from? It gets it from it’s food - it eats plants.
“Enjoy your salad!”
You know how often I eat salad? Almost never. You know what I do eat though? Food.
“I don’t like eggs, so I can’t be vegetarian.” and/or “I could be vegetarian, I like fish!”
Some quick definitions.
Vegetarian: Someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with, or without, the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish* or by-products of slaughter.
Pescatarian: Eats fish and seafood, but abstains from eating all other meat and animal flesh.
Lacto-ovo-vegetarian: Eats both dairy products and eggs. This is the most common type of vegetarian diet.
Lacto-vegetarian: Eats dairy products but not eggs.
Ovo-vegetarian: Eats eggs but not dairy products.
Vegan: Is a way of living (not a type of diet) which seeks to exclude, as much as possible, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. (no honey, no wool, no leather, no medicines tested on animals, etc.)
Sam is totally right in some of his comments though. Everyone needs to go on Netflix and watch Cowspiracy. Like, now.
