god such good tactics from the bad kids in this fight.
quick level update: fig is a devotion paladin! joining the ranks with our most popular paladin subclass, among tuc ricky matsui, sunny biscotto, andhera, and viola. coincidentally she sits in the paladin chair (L1).
the bad kids have capped off at level 14; reference my last post on this for what they have here. they're going to this fight at like 3/4s of a tank; high level spells spent on healing and used in the last fight, hit die used, magic items spent.
ice feast prep: exhaustion and 1d12 damage, but cured of all poison and disease, immune to fire damage and stun, con saves with advantage, and hit point max increases by 2d10. incredible homebrew spell that complete fucks brennan in this fight. the immunity to fire lets them use the lava and environment to their advantage while making the enemies have to avoid the consequences of their own actions.
kristen getting k2 back? lovely story move. wanting a sister to share in your faith? brilliant. tactically, it gives them another full cleric who can move around the battlefield and heal while splitting attention. she has greater invisibility on and can just move around and get heals to people.
prepping fly on almost all of them means they avoid the difficult terrain and have mobility around the battlefield where they can get cover, remove line of sight, and calculate their ranges easily.
fabian killing ivy in one turn? exceptional. not just a good turn from lou but an example of what was to come from them. fabian has had one turn up in this combat and still fully removed the danger of ranger/fighter weapon attacks while drawing attention from the biggest threat.
riz casting slow with magical ambush? phenomenal. functionally took care of one of the big melee and one of the big spellcasters. mary ann did nothing, and ruben being slowed got rid of his counterspells. it made buddy waste a turn. also just fucking diving into the lava.
adaine with synaptic static? fantastic. really hitting the clump and making jace start damaged, when sorcerers are squishy to begin with. at level 20, and lets say a con modifier of +3, max he could get is 180, and realistically its closer to 120.
gorgug killing oisin in one turn and preventing him from going at all? fabulous. he's the one who could summon allies for the rat grinders--getting rid of him gets rid of that possibility.
kristen using the cover and then doing double rounds of healing from herself and k2? astounding. keeping out of sightlines for damage to hold bless. staying uncounterspellable.
fig with the enormous fireball? stupendous. sent ruben to hell, damaged mary ann, and really got all of the jaces, and broke buddy's banishment concentration
shout out to the melees: fig, fabian, and gorgug concentrated fire from porter as they took out the rat grinders. even though they all went down, they have reliable healers to get them off the ground. no holds barred. they took out the three rat grinders that are now dead.
none of them had rage tokens and they didn't get turned against their allies. they've spent this fight fully just dunking on the rat grinders, jace, and porter.
for the rat grinders: they've taken out ivy, oisin, and ruben--ivy with big ranged damage, oisin and ruben with 9th level spells and counterspells. they've bloodied all of the jaces and broken his big damage concentrations, broken buddy's concentration on banishment and damaged him, kept mary ann out of the fight pretty much until now, mostly avoided kipperlilly's sneak attacks, and riz is prepping to hit her with a spell on her turn. porter has taken some damage, but has been forced to use legendary resistances and can't get them to take him seriously.
realistically the difference between them comes from tactics. the rat grinders are being piloted by one guy who has to manage a lot of factors in this fight. they are not a team of adventurers who have read the book front to back and used it to prime advantage. they have not actually faced the monsters they farmed for xp. they likely don't have the types of magic items or feats that the bad kids have earned through their adventuring. their buffs have been knocked off one by one as the bad kids wreck house.
from a watsonian perspective they're not using basic party strategy: not protecting their wizard, not moving their melees to give the rogue sneak attack, clumping up and getting AOEed thrice to great effect, expending their big resources at the top of the fight, not using cover or other tactical advantages, giving themselves difficult terrain and having to deal with hazards the bad kids don't have, not coordinating their counterspells and other debuffs, not protecting their cleric or encouraging him to heal, and working on a ritual that they don't have all the tools for.
they're statted like power-leveled pcs, not npcs, and what do npcs have? magic items, unique abilities, and hit points. jace and porter have homebrew shit going on. the rat grinders are 20th level with the hit points of maybe 10th level characters. ivy only took 78 points of damage before going down. 2 attacks from fabian plus incidentals from fig's green flame blade. they all have glass cannon type builds except for maybe mary ann, and we haven't seen her go to work yet.
incredibly excited for the finale next week. sidenote the outfits are so fun. i might be late next week because i have a concert to go to, but still. i'll be back with xp counts and some reflection on what the rat grinders have actually done.

D20 Seasons, Ranked
Well someone else did this so now I have to do this, ranking (almost) all the seasons of D20. I have not watched Pirates of Leviathan still, I will get to it sometime.
Fantasy High Sophomore Year
In part this is a time and place thing, and as you'll see on this list sequal seasons tend to do a lot for me. Adaine and Aelwyn alone would get this into the top three, and it's not alone; to me, Fearful Symmetry might be the single best episode D20's done still. Even with all the production issues of a live show, this is firmly at the top for me.
The Unsleeping City Part 2
Solidly in second place, The Unsleeping City part 2. I love to hate Cody, I find Iga's family plotline great, and there are great villains throughout this season. Kalina's still my single favorite D20 villain, but Tony and Null might be second and third. I need to rewatch this season, but it's unlikely to drop too far on this list.
A Starstruck Odyssey
The next two flip back and forth in my mind constantly; today, this one gets the edge for third. There's not really a weakness here (though Gunnie is my least favorite Lou character, he's still pretty good), and I think it's easily the FUNNIEST intrepid heroes season; I just find the emotional hits stronger in the two seasons above.
A Court of Fae and Flowers
This is an absolute force of a season, highlighted in particular for me by Lou and Emily playing their most absolutely chaotic and hilarious characters as well as incredible performances from Surena as Binx and Omar as Andhera. More roleplay, less combat suits my own interests for certain as well. Aabria should get at least one ten episode season to GM a year as far as I'm concerned.
Fantasy High
There's a lot of learning curve here in their first season for certain - I'm not sure they get concentration right once in the entire season, the timeline at points is an absolute trainwreck, and all of them are kind of feeling their way into the level of roleplaying they eventually settle into - but the season is great and has some absolutely incredible moments, especially as they do settle into it.
The Seven
A completely wild season, and easily and by far the horniest season of D20 even though there are at least two seasons where that is explicitly a part of the theme (ACoFaF and Shriek Week.) Almost every cast is great; this one is top notch. I don't really have anything bad to say about it.
Mentopolis
The newest season, this one might move up or down still quite a lot on a rewatch and with time to settle in my own personal library of memories. The characters are by design slightly one-note but it's done in a way that's incredible. Maybe the single season with the smallest gap between my favorite character and my least favorite; I'd be hard pressed to even settle on one for either end.
Never After
I wanted to love this season even more than I did, and I do like it quite a bit, but it has some missing potential. I don't need a horror season from D20 to be crazy hardcore or anything, but this one wound up being more of a weird metastory season than horror; I would argue that FHSY and TUC2 both are more of horror seasons in the end than Never After ended up as. I think this one needed a single villain to land a bit more, or maybe another ten episodes for some of the concepts to breath a little; there were just so many elements packed in and then at the end we hadn't even met large chunks of those present at the final fight. That said, it's this high because I more or less love all the things it's hitting on and there are some GREAT moments.
The Unsleeping City
To me this is the season that suffers the most from the early season RP episode - combat episode pacing, even more than Fantasy High. It's got some really nice highs, like the Titania fight or the moment when Ricky swims across to Staten Island, but it also has some real lows: The wall street fight may be the single most miserable to watch drag of a fight in the entire series, with the villain behind a globe of invulnerability, every minion in the fight having THREE legendary resistances, and a pretty dull set, and this is the penultimate encounter! Great characters, of course, but (somewhat uniquely) I enjoy watching Cody more than Kugrash and find the dynamics in TUC2 much more fun.
A Crown of Candy
This starts breaking the mold on the RP/Combat episode thing but still mostly sticks to it. The front half is GREAT, and would be much higher on this list. My complaint with the back half is not Saccharina related, but simply that I find the last three encounter designs pretty bland and unchallenging, a complete romp for the players. Some people actually do blame that on Saccharina, but I think it's mostly just a product of being higher level and Brennan not particularly balancing the fights around level - that made the early fights incredibly hard, but by the time people are level nine it's a different world than a fight where they are 1-3.
Also how do you go from giving your next to last fight 15 legendary resistances in TUC to 0 here? C'mon.
Mice and Murder
Maybe the most unique season of the show, I need to rewatch this one but remember really enjoying it, if for nothing else then just for Sam and Grant pelting Brennan with heckling from over the zoom call throughout the season.
Escape from the Bloodkeep
The first side quest, I'm NOT a big Lord of the Rings fan but this is a thoroughly fun season anyway. There's still some early installment weirdness, but I think there's a lot to love here; Trapp and Ify give performances I find particularly fun.
Ravening War
This one's a little controversial, and for the record we're still in seasons I like well enough. I think this was my favorite bit of Matt Mercer GMing I've ever seen; I also still do not particularly care for his style as a GM (though I quite enjoyed him as a player in Bloodkeep.) I wish this hadn't veered off into the underground at the end; something more tied directly within the events of the Ravening War would have fulfilled the promise more to me. I DID quite like the concept of characters going through a longer period of time between episodes, with this covering something like eight or ten years, and I hope that's a thing they revisit in the future.
Honestly, just watching how delighted Brennan is to get to play in a world of his creation is what led me to bump it up over Coffin Run.
Coffin Run
Honestly this one was fine but I do like the longer seasons and the larger tables; Jasmine did a solid job as a DM and all four players were good, but I do kind of wish they'd ended up going with WoD instead of 5E for this one. I don't dislike anything here that much, it just isn't a standout for me.
Shriek Week
This more or less plotless season does basically what it says; the cast is great and I like Gabe as a GM, but it's four episodes and four players and honestly my aroaceness might be showing here but it's largely a very small appetizer when I'm looking for a main course in a D20 season.
Dungeons and Drag Queens
This one's gonna be really controversial, but this is a season I would (and will) rewatch and it might move up. I think I wasn't really the target audience, and I'm glad it seems to have found people who were.
A worthwhile season just for how great the players and Brennan looked alone, though.
Misfits and Magic
So. This is the first season I won't ever rewatch again, and it's not really the fault of anyone who was involved. At this point, I just can't give even the slightest bit of cultural power to the property that this season is parodying. I'm glad that, at this point, everyone involved has been in other seasons because they all do incredible jobs, and I respect people who make different choices about engaging with it, but I just can't anymore. I think the season is good - probably good enough to go several slots above this - but here it is for me. Consider this kind of an N/A.
Tiny Heist
Oh boy. The only season I actively recommend against to people who ask my opinion, there'd be a country mile between this and Dungeons and Drag Queens (which I still liked) and it's entirely from the cast. I really hope we get Jess Ross in another season; Lily too even though she's quite good in Shriek Week. As for the elephants in the room, the oldest brother and the dad seem fine and fun, but the middle and youngest made this a miserable watch for me. For people who like them, I'm sure this is near the top of their lists; for me, it's an F-.

My favorite purple pixies from the pack. Andhera and Binx and how their characters transformed through the series is so moving. I love the awkwardness and sincerity they both have.

DND moment here. If you watch Dimension 20 you’d know A Court of Fey and Flowers. This is just my thoughts on that:
I know that we got some level of closure with the end of the campaign, a Court of Fey Flowers by Dimension 20, but I wanted to add to that. It was tied together in a neat bow, but just for the sake of extending it to its fullest potential, here’s what I have.
Chirp is very emotional as she realizes that she helped to save the portal between worlds, and that’s not only important to her because of the way that she can go back to her family, but she also realizes the weight of having the portals open for everyone. She doesn’t want the court of craft to expire on top of that. She decides that after her wife and child die, she will join the court of craft.
This campaign did not change a lot for Squak, but he realizes the importance of holding bonds together. The change in him is not obvious to someone he doesn’t know, because it is reasoning that changes, not actual aspects of him. He decides not to formally join the court of craft being that he has never felt the need to join a court, but he always makes time to be there for Binx in anyway, he can. Specifically because he knows that courts are not necessarily what holds things together. He knows that is the magic itself and the love within it is what maintains that connection.
Andhera, having falling in love with Binx, appreciates the ties between the unseelie court and the court of craft. He knows that he in so many ways is forming an alliance that will be obvious to any other courts and advantageous within them, but he knows he also wants to make changes his own court so that one day people will see how the unseelie changed for the better, and he is at the helm of that change. When he takes the throne and becomes king, he helps with change that will not only make the unseelies seem to be in a better light, but to help bring everyone together in the hopes that someday there won’t be any need for courts.
Binx decides to take her new position and use it to her advantage in order to move through the spaces of other courts. She knows deep down that she may be the leader of the court of craft, and it could help enact change needed to bring people together, but she sees her self as equals with anyone that she meets. Having fallen in love with Andhera she also recognizes the importance of it to other courts, and she knows they will find a way to be together. She appreciates everything that he has done for her in a deep and profound way that cannot be severed by anything but death.
Rue looks at KP and they see nothing but love. They realize that he was just afraid to make a statement, to take a chance. And KP knows that Rue was fully dedicated to love and choosing to break up Apollo and Grebalba was just that. When KP put down his uniform, and called himself an orphan saying that they would never be lonely again, they embrace and fall into a passionate kiss. The tension there had been charged for quite a while, and they both know that in some ways, there’s risk. Regardless of that, they know it is a risk they’re choosing to take together. In the moment Rue realizes that Wuvvy did not give KP the letter, it only stings for a fraction of a second before they realize they don’t care. They are here in this moment with the one that they love, and nothing will stop them from being together. They decide to take Binx’s offer but because nothing is formal in their court anyway, they don’t do anything magically. They just live in and around that court to help in anyways they can. KP follows Rue’s lead in that, but he does so because he agrees. Not just because Rue did so. He also opens himself up to learning what it means to the the master of his own fate, and that is obvious in his decision to be an orphan fey with the love of his life.

Finished ACOFAF and.... It was also just okay for me tbh
Two things to know about me: I'm aromantic and I love fae lore.
Two things about ACOFAF: It's very heavy handed in it's romance tropes and, honestly, there's very little to do with fae lore that I was hoping would be there.
Firstly, the lore: I got really excited going into a season about Fae courts because there's sooooooooo much trickery and clever wordplay that Faeries and known for, and I assumed it would be part of the games mechanics (like having to be careful about what you/the npcs say and getting creative about how the players speak to each other) but that.... didn't really happen. I thought Gwyn's plotline at first was that she was secretly a human that infiltrated a court and had to blend in, but that didn't actually happen. In general, there was zero talk about like. Faerie/Human relationships or changelings or anything like that (beyond a few throwaway lines about Binx being a warlock patron and Chirp's family). I got really excited when Wanessa showed up out of the blue, but she didn't really end up doing anything and all of the players just sort of forgot about her after the first episode she was in.
Two, the romance: It just.... Didn't do anything for me, yknow? I'm sorry to say this. Perhaps a controversial take. But I didn't care about Hob x Rue. Not that I didn't ship them I guess, just that I didn't actually care about their tragic romance plotline. Binx and Andhera felt very last minute to me as well. I thought Wuvvy was going to be a jealous rival for Hob and turn into a bad guy, so I am glad that her platonic feelings for Rue were genuine.
In terms of characters, I really liked Binx and Andhera. What can I say I have a type (the type is the most loser awkward guy in the room). I thought Andhera was mostly just fun, there for a good time, and just a genuinely kind guy while Binx's story was really good. The cousins were just okay for me, they were the comedic relief this season.
I thought the mechanics were fun, for the most part, if a little unbalanced. I liked the "you get a trinket for good roleplaying" thing (on a less experienced table, it would be a great way to encourage people to roleplay together) and I double thought that burning a trinket (and metaphorically burning that relationship moment) to get advantage was a cool mechanic too. The 'how people view you' mechanic wasn't very balanced to me tbh it was unclear how it was determined and I think that it was far too easy to make it move up for it to really add anything (plus no one got treated any differently by NPCs for it anyway?)
On the note of NPCs though-- I think one of Aabria's biggest strengths and weaknesses of her DMing is how she treats NPCs. All of them are very... same-y? I guess? and more often than not they fall to the wayside and don't super provide anything extra to the game. It's good, because she gives a lot of space to the players to control the game (instead of an NPC telling them what to do) but it also means none of the NPCs are particularly memorable. Wuvvy is an exception, mostly because Rue had a lot of control over her, but even then towards the last few episodes, she fell back to the wayside to give room to the players and only showed up at the very very end.
In general, I think it just wasn't particularly my cup of metaphorical tea. Rick Perry fucking popped OFF with the set though. It's like after quarantine ended, the art department went feral and decided to just go balls to the wall bonkers with the set design.
best to worst (for me) it's: Fantasy High (Freshman-Junior Year) -> Starstruck Odyssey -> Mice and Murder -> MisMag -> ACOFAF -> The Seven -> Unsleeping City 1 -> Unsleeping City 2
Next is Neverafter. We're slowly getting caught up! Just 3 more until I'm caught up with NSBU.
Okay so my summer goal has been to catch up on all the seasons of Dimension 20 that I've been wanting to watch but haven't been able to, so I'm going to ramble about my thoughts here
This is all just opinion so pls don't get mad at me if I don't like your favorite season :(
I've already watched all of Fantasy High (the main seasons, not The Seven) and that, so far, is probably my favorite? I think all of the characters are enjoyable, the setting is fun, the players all work really well together and the mysteries are interesting.
ALSO I've already seen Misfits and Magic, which is also pretty good! I like the Kids on Bikes system in general, Aabria is a wonderful DM, and I think Brennan as a player is really funny. My only real complaint about it is that I feel like some of the players kind of took a backseat most of the time and the story was basically just to make fun of Harry Potter the entire time, so it didn't super interest me as much. Other than that I thought the season was fun, I liked the characters and the players.
so far from best to worst (for me) it's: Fantasy High (Freshman-Junior Year) -> MisMag

am i the only one who thinks andhera’s awkwardness is on purpose?
ever since he betrayed his sister with his niceness, ive been wondering if his “bumbling idiot”-ness is all a ploy. either he’s purposefully sabotaging his court (like with his sister or with his interruption of a duel— something he should have been fully aware was extremely dishonorable and that he would most likely lose in), OR he’s purposefully pretending to be stupid so he is trusted with lots of peoples secrets, as we’re already seeing, which he would then— in theory— use advantageously for his court. (i dont think hes going to do that now and hurt his friends though).
but hes never bumbling in his normal voice, and im starting to think more and more that hes a lot smarter than he portrays

Okay but honestly I can’t tell if I want to curse Brennan or thank him for the genius move of giving andhera the detect thoughts potion instead of taking it for himself. Hob dismissed it as never trying the same battle tactic twice, which is fair, and he couldn’t risk being distracted during a potential ambush, also fair. But gods I would give anything for an au where hob got to hear rue’s confession of love within their own mind
Brennan managed to hit upon the exact choice that would simultaneously reveal all of their thoughts and the internal dilemmas the characters were going through while maintaining the angst and miscommunication they’ve been building up

Thinking Abt the big ruehob moment this episode....I think it's so fitting that the thing that finally brings them together (or at least a Step closer) wasn't an active choice on either of their parts but a complete act of instinct, of impulse, of muscle memory. Both of them are so Trained to act a certain way. Hob is a lowborn soldier who sees himself as a tool, a thing to be commanded, and nothing more. Rue sees themself as the gracious host, the hard worker, and as something that has to be tamed and put away by higher powers. They're both so deep in their respective courts rules and brainwashings that of course they wouldn't make the active effort, wouldn't make the first move on each other. That would be wrong, impolite, obscene.
But then in a moment where everything is dark and loud and no one is looking at them and there's a brief moment of panic- Hob instinctively moves to protect Rue. Just like how in last episode, Hob stated his first name, bluntly, and Andhera caught the unfiltered uncontrolled thought from Rue of "I love him." They can hide it as deep down as they want, as long as they have that control, as long as that's the only control they have period. But you take away the polite society and the watching eyes and ears and the expectations and you get down to just their pure, undiluted thoughts and desires...It's I love you. It's I want to protect you. Despite myself, despite what I am supposed to do, I can't not think of you.

binx/andhera moments from ep7
Andhera and Frog!Binx leaving the tailors talk about the mortal realm and how many books Andhera has read
When Binx has to leave with Rue, Andhera cannot make a coherent sentence to say farewell 😭
Andhera visits Binx's quarters, is greeted to Binx in the equivelent of a dirty t shirt and leggings, and lets him in
Andhera requests if she could make something for him, collabing a outfit
Binx measuring Andhera (the intimacy of being close ????)
Andhera doubting if he should get a crown, downsizing to a tiara, or a headpiece, but Binx insists she'll make him a crown
"thank you for trusting me with this"
Andhera and Binx talking about what they have in common (being alone for periods of time 😭)
Binx talks of the rumours of the Queen of Air of Darkness, which Andhera doesn't diffuse and further talks about the stoicism of the Unseelie court
Reveal of the elemental shard on his neck, anytime hes emotional a cloud would form above his head - and Binx is rightfully mortified
Binx offering to remove the shard and Andhera is stunned (Bonus Brennan reaction to Surena's words)
Tumblr media
"It has been the nature of my family to pit sibling against one another for quite a time, because there was this idea of scarcity of love in my family. And nothing quite clicked until hearing you talk about magic. The way you see magic is that magic is love, a plant reaching up for the sun, the affinity between people and things..and it occured to me that, the fey, we treat magic as if there is a scarcity to it in the same way that we feel like there's a scarcity to love, and its something to manipulate, move around like pieces on a game board. That can't be correct.."
"For me, in my Court, magic is love. Magic is feelings. Magic is anger, magic is, you know, is everything, but there are fey out there who do wish to withhold or keep, capture, siphon magic. And, as such, is you know why thats what happened to everyone..Except for I found a loophole you see. I found to create sort of like a, I don't know another term for it other than a washing machine, like a spinning cycle of movement and magic that can happen between belief and the Mortal Plane. And I work with three others who believe in me and together we create magic. And that's how I am here! The last Weaver of Fate [...]"
Binx panics after her monologue and proceeds to finish his outfit for them <3
Andhera brings a hand on Binx's shoulder to turn her (the live studio audience is intrigued) - THEN BRUSHES HIS HAND ALONG HER SHOULDER BLADES????????
Asking about the royal term of the Court of Wonder , revealed to be a house, Andhera grabs a cardboard tube and pledges a oath to Binx's cause
"Let's bring this entire fucking thing down." Is knighted by Binx, who goes "Let's."
Andhera: "i made a pit stop" The entire table: OOOOOs (makes jokes that hes going to a jeweller for a ring)
Hob really goes "are you going to court grabalba? are you sure? no? okay." and proceeds to try to push Andhera towards Binx, and Rue attempts to push Binx towards him (ultimately a failure)
Binx and Andhera spend a large majority of the dance in the shadows talking to one another
Binx shares a black apple with them, taking a bite, Andhera gets to feel memories of the mortal realm for the first time of warmth, a found family he never experienced growing up, and a overall sense of comfort
"My happiness up until this point has been like striking a piece of flint in the darkness, little bits of spark which I was very grateful for. This is a fire..Thank you..Would you accompany me to a quick conversation?" "Sure, I would love to."
Arm linking !!!!
Andhera leads them towards the Lords of the Wing, to which Chirp realizes Binx and Gwyndolin are the same

It doesn't fit in with my current regency-bridgerton au but,
Fake-dating AU where Prince Andhera is the most desirable bachelor of the season, and he's done a bunch to prepare, looking and sounding a total Prince Charming. but, they didn't realize how deeply uncomfortable it would be to interact with a bunch of fey who only see him for their title (and. Perhaps. Their good looks, to put it politely) and they desperately want Out.
Meanwhile we also have Binx, who is the first member to debut from the Court of Craft in many seasons, a smaller Court that could be on the rise.. the high fey of good society are intrigued, but skeptical if she would make a good match. Binx hopes to make a good political move, to ensure the safety and good fortune of her small court, lest it fade out entirely or be swallowed (lookin at you, court of wonder)
They become quick, true friends even amongst all the fog of all the fey flocking to each of them. Then (perhaps after a hint or two from Rue) they decide on a Ruse. they act like a Flame has happened between them, to set their reputations
And then... (a la Bridgerton s1), He is Unavailable, She is Desirable.
Of course, the last thing they were supposed to do is fall for each other amidist their Ruse, but, well.. of course they do. But each thinks the other is just a friend, and only in fake-love with them.
Whatever are they do to?
