Kunsel says:
We should maybe have a stricter definition of what counts as "hacking", okay?
It was a slow day at work, and he decided to guess people's email passwords in 10 attempts.
How does it go?
YESSSSSSSSS
Pro tips: make your password long, that is the most important factor. Use a password manager, most of them have a free option. Adding complexity does help, but focus on length first. Size does matter here. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) also helps a lot.
---------
Kunsel: Zack, gimme your password!
Zack: ...
Kunsel: Come on man, I need it for something!
Zack: 😭😭😭 buddy I would, but I forgot it again 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Kunsel: Ok man, it's ok, let's look around your desk...here, under this pile of chip bags, I think i saw...yeah, here's the penguin toy...and yep, Password Penguin has "Zack'ss00p3rp4ssw0rd!" written on the bottom. Let's try it!
(it works)
Zack: THANK YOU KUNSEL I THOUGHT I'D LOST HIM AND I COULDN'T REMEMBER AND-
Kunsel: *wheeze* Zack let go, I need to breathe *wheeze*
Tumblr media
-----------
Kunsel tries to guess Roche's by typing it in.
M0t0rcycle!
ShinyDancer
Sh1n33D4nc3r!
He's in.
Tumblr media
------------
Kunsel tries to guess Sephiroth's. On the 9th try, he gets it: Seph+Jenova4ever
Horrible things are uncovered along the way and now he needs to send Sephiroth some information very discreetly.
Tumblr media
------------
Lazard. Kunsel knows better. He gives a few guesses, but decides to actually hack this.
He sets up a hash capturing tool over the internal network and waits for Lazard to log on. He does. Kunsel captures the hash and starts cracking it.
Three days later, the hash cracker has not worked and he has to give up on that.
Kunsel: Sir, I need to get into your email, will you please send me your password?
Lazard: Of course not, that is unsafe and against company policy. However, you're welcome to come to my office to perform any actions we both deem necessary.
Kunsel goes over and Lazard is using multifactor authentication, so just having the hash cracked wouldn't have worked anyway. He sets up a keylogger surreptitiously on Lazard's workstation while "performing updates" and showing Lazard new features in his email.
The things he captures with that keylogger:
* Numerous emails covering for boneheaded shit the SOLDIERs did.
* The letter "A" typed about a thousand times into a text file labeled "definitely not screams.txt".
* Moogle searches for "how to convince your employees to get therapy", "pasta recipes", "therapists near me", "child psychology for adults", "play therapy for adults", "cat psychology", and "shrimp pasta recipes".
* The password: &oh'ihiy_-8_gi"it"gi_ipkb0(-ur#3-@--LXS4ever--9(9;0(!08(098+pihjboigig(@ukopih
Tumblr media
Then it is a simple matter of finding a zero-day race condition hack in the MFA software, timing things just right, and entering the password and hacked MFA key at the perfect moment.
Kunsel of course has pity on the man after seeing even more emails such as...
* Explaining to Roche that doing squats over his motorcycle makes it look like he's humping it, and it is making people uncomfortable.
* Asking Genesis to please not actually firaga the recruits this week, they don't need a lawsuit. No, it's not character building. No, even though it was part of his home training and Shinra sanctioned training a few years ago.
* Inviting Sephiroth over for shrimp pasta to discuss strategy.
* Asking Angeal to seek therapy so the others will follow his lead.
* Telling Zack that he could not have a therapy flamingo in the office. Even if it was a lawn ornament.
* Warning Hojo not to take Sephiroth this week.
* Warning Hollander not to take Genesis and Angeal this week.
* Reaming Heidegger out very politely for all his BS.
Kunsel logs out without doing anything. Lazard needs a break.
Tumblr media
--------
Kunsel calls Angeal pretending to be the help desk. Angeal, a bit embarrassed over his upbringing and unsure because he feels unused to technology, eventually gives Kunsel the password: BanoraBoys123!
Tumblr media
----------
Genesis' is guessed on the 7th try because Kunsel didn't want to bother typing in an entire stanza of Loveless with numbers instead of vowels.
1nf1n1t3_1n_myst3ry_1s_th3_g1ft_0f_th3_g0dd3ss__w3_s33k_1t_th7s_4nd_t4k3_t0_th3_sky_r1ppl3s...
He sends an email from Genesis inviting everyone to a Loveless recital on Tuesday. It backfires because several people, including Genesis, show up and have a great time.
Tumblr media
-----------
Kunsel tries Zack's little trooper friend next. He's a tough nut to crack. He won't pick up his PHS to get vished, won't click on Kunsel's phishing emails, and won't tell Zack or Kunsel his password.
Kunsel captures his hash and cracks it. It takes a full 24 hours, but he gets it in the end:

APRIL 2024 WRAP UP
[loved liked ok nope dnf (reread) bookclub*]
Death in the Spires • Heartstopper Vol 4 • Heartstopper Vol 3 • To Marry an English Lord • The True Queen • (Heartstopper Vol 2) • Fun Home* • (Arabella of Mars) • I’m Glad My Mom Died • (Sorcerer to the Crown) • And Then There Were None • Vassa in the Night • Queen of the Night • The Other Significant Others • Most Ardently • The Reformatory • The Book of Love
Read: 14 (10 audio, 4 print, 3 DNF)
The Other Significant Others (5 stars)- I've been anticipating this one ever since I first heard about it and it didn't disappoint! Not only does it tell the stories of people in close, non-traditional relationships, it also talks about marriage, raising kids, and aging, and it was all incredible. I've recommended this in the tags of so many posts and I need y'all to read it.
Queen of the Night (3 stars) - I've heard this glowingly recommended. I liked the author's story in the Sword, Stone, Table anthology. The events in the book are incredible! I should have been fascinated! But I was so bored! Part of it was that the mystery/thriller element in the description - someone has written an opera based on the main character's scandalous secret past, who could it be? - was extremely oversold, most of the book is recounting said past events, and we don't really dive into the present mystery until the very end. I've read similarly slow books so I don't know why I didn't like this, but I wish I'd dnf'd it. I'd recommend you try The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland instead.
Vassa in the Night (4 stars) - this one surprised me! It's YA, I've heard pretty mixed reviews, and it's been sitting on my shelf for a while - starting it, the VERy in-your-face YAness almost threw me off but I'm very glad I stuck through it. I live for magic and fairy tales being dumped into modern times, and the really smart thing about this book is that it keeps a very tight focus (no space for the larger worldbuilding to fall apart lol). We've got a morally-grey magical doll companion who's a kleptomaniac and will eat you out of house and home, Baba-Yaga and her 24-hour convenience store on chicken feet, her disembodied hand assistants, weird guy on a motorcycle, and oh yeah, if they catch you stealing they'll put your head on display (and they're not above framing you to do it). Yes this is perfectly normal, why do you ask? I'm not saying it's perfect, but I had such a good time!
And Then There Were None (4 stars) - my first real attempt at Christie! I did enjoy listening to this, enough that I think I'll try some other Christie, but it wasn't entirely to my taste. I prefer having a detective figure in the story to follow, and the "reveal" after was disappointing.
Sorcerer to the Crown (3.5 stars) - this was a reread, and I definitely liked it a lot less for some reason this time? Maybe it was changing formats, but I love a historical fantasy romp and this should have been right up my alley! The True Queen (4 stars) was much more enjoyable, so maybe it was the characters, maybe it was the rereading itself. I think this might be my sign to call it quits with Zen Cho.
I'm Glad My Mom Died (4 stars) - this isn't really one I think I'd have ever picked for myself even though it got popular, except that my book-club friend recommended it. I'm finding that I'm not really one for memoirs, but despite the heartbreaking contents this was very easy to read - largely chronological with short chapters, and the author is clearly aware that things were bad even when her younger self did not. I accidentally started this when I was also reading Fun Home, so that was a lot of bad-parent-memoir at the same time, oops.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic (4 stars) - I've been eying this one for a while and am glad to have gotten it on the list for book club! Deeply fascinating, if not always an easy read - the subject on one hand, but the density of the pages, the differences between the comic panels and the narration outside them, and the jumping through time that memoirs do sometimes made events hard to follow. I admit my favorite parts were seeing the different queer books Bechdel slipped into her illustrations (one that I'm reading right now even!).
Arabella of Mars (4.5 stars) - Y'all, we are sleeping on this book, I had so much fun! Here's to girls dressing as boys, sailing ships, steampunk space travel, and vibes straight from early sci-fi adventure novels. I can't believe I forgot about this and am just glad I picked up a copy at the library sale to make myself reread it. I do apologize for thinking this was YA (which it isn't), but further thoughts on that and the rest of the series will have to wait for next month.
Heartstopper Vol 2-4 (5/5/4 stars) - finally! I read part of the comic online ages ago, and read Vol 1 for book club the other month, but I finally got started on the rest of the series. I had definitely read through Vol 2 previously, but everything else was new to me. I had a good time, but Vol 4 was a bit of a(n expected!) downer, and the time jump in the middle ruined the flow a bit for me. I do have Vol 5 in my hands currently, and if I didn't have so many other things to do I'd be tempted to do a big Alice Oseman re/read.
To Marry an English Lord (4 stars) - I encountered this at not one, but TWO unrelated book sales before I caved and bought it. I enjoyed it! It's mostly a sort of overview/reference covering the period around the Gilded Age - the New York upper crust, the European Aristocracy, and the various societal events that lead to a pattern of marital exchange. Did I skim the bits where it just listed name after name after name? Yes, but! Highly recommend to anyone reading romances or general fiction set in the period, I really wish I'd read this before trying The Age of Innocence! (its also very funny how occasionally it makes references that make it very obvious it was written in the 80's lol). Pairs incredibly well with another book I bought at the same sale, The Divorce Colony by April White.
Death in the Spires (3.5 stars) - I love KJ Charles, but I've often felt that her plots and romances can sometimes be at odds - so I was very excited when she said she'd written a mystery! But I'm lukewarm about it at best. The campus novel portions were fascinating, and I'd have loved more of them. But Jem as our narrator just wasn't engaging for most of the book. I wouldn't say it's his fault necessarily, but he's not really a good detective, there are either no clues or they're just going in circles, and the promised attempts on his life just aren't happening. Once we hit the 2/3 mark, where we're on campus, have more characters together, and they're talking - that's when things got good! Maybe this will be be better on a reread, but for now my hopes are for some good fanfic. Would recommend more to the dark academia people rather than mystery fans.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most Ardently (20%) - the vibes were very much, "here's my blorbos, I'm putting them in a Pride and Prejudice AU." Which is great, if that's what you want! It was not what I wanted alas. Biggest cons, the de-ageing of the characters and the generally modern YA/queerness. Pros, they did keep all of the other Bennet sisters! I was so tempted to keep reading just to see how Oliver and Darcy got together, but I knew I wasn't going to enjoy myself. Would have loved to see this presented as an original work rather than an adaptation, or as something hewing closer to the original tone and period of the novel.
The Reformatory (43%) - this was good, really! It's just that I'm only so-so on horror on my best days, and both story lines were sad and dark and depressing. I could have probably handled one or the other, but I wasn't really having a good time (that's not the right phrasing exactly, but you know what I mean). I had other things I wanted to read and it was a long book.
The Book of Love (6%) - I've heard multiple people sing the praises of Kelly Link, so while I wasn't really drawn by the description, I thought I'd give it a shot! I did, and it still didn't draw me in. Maybe I'll give it a try again someday, but I think I'll try her short fiction first.

Interview with Tina Aumont 2
Modesty Blaise by Joseph Losey was your first film. How did it go? Was it during a casting call that you were selected?
No, it was by chance. I was under contract with FOX to take classes in New York, and I was married to Christian Marquand, a great actor older than me, who had already made a lot of films, and so I was in love. He happened to be filming an Aldrich film in America at the same time in the Colorado desert. I don't know if it was Darryl Zanuck who said to me, "You have to have a career." And so it was he who put me under contract with FOX, renewable every year. From time to time I went to see the filming of "Flight of the Phoenix" by Robert Aldrich with Christian Marquand and Peter Finch, the story of this plane which crashes in the desert and which is reconstructed from another plane.
I had friends in England, and I wanted to see them. It was easy to travel at that time. Aldrich said to me: "If you go to London, go and see my friend Losey, and say hello to him for me." which I did. He was preparing "Modesty Blaise". We had lunch together. Losey asks me, “Do you know how to ride motorcycles?” and I say, “That’s all I’m doing…” and Losey: “well, fine, I’ll take you.” I signed in Amsterdam, ready to shoot on the day of filming… I try the motorbike without having used one, and I hit a wall. So, the scene is done on a bicycle. I watched the film again, there is a very pretty scene, the one where I am killed in a fairground, with a house full of dolls that really exist in Holland. A film shot with the wonderful Monica Vitti.
Is she a friend of yours?
Yes. She's not a close friend. Both Terence Stamp and Monica Vitti are friends that I saw again in the future. And Losey even more, between Paris, Rome and London. He was quite European.
I love what he does in general. And he is a fabulous, generous, intelligent man obviously; a great director. I was very lucky to make my first film with him, and the role was nice. We had to reshoot scenes because the English censors were quite picky at the time. We caught a glimpse of one of my breasts, but that didn't happen. We went back to the studio in London.
Tina interviewed by Antoine Cervero in 2001. Published in January/June 2002 Cine Zine Zone number 134.
Very special thanks to @74paris for sharing this gem.

July 11
We are presently in Earnewald, the only developed area of Alde Feanen national park. Skip’s brother John just left for home, always good to see him. Last year we met up with him at the motorcycle race in Assen and it was a very hot and busy time. This year we took it slowly, meeting up in Herrenveen and then went thru part of the turf route, slow because of the many locks and bridges. We also had one day of high winds, had to cut our day short and I’m glad we had John’s help to tie up. Weather man said it the wind gusted up to 93 klm
We’re doing a little touch up painting today. Went to a cafe last night to see Holland lose to England, many very sad faces at the end, as soccer’s the main sport of the country , but I guess you could say that about all of Europe.
We are deciding where to go until our next visitors come the end of the month. We’re not quite finished here yet as we’ve discovered many wonderful bike paths to explore.

Other good news
In a brief report, officials said cars would pay a toll of up to $15 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street once per day. Commercial trucks would pay as much as $36. Taxis will add $1.25 per fare, and ride-hail apps like Uber and Lyft will tack on an extra $2.50 per ride.
Low-income drivers will get 50 percent off tolls during the day after the first 10 trips in a calendar month. It will also be much cheaper to drive at night: Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., fees will be reduced by 75 percent.
Tumblr media
Drivers of passenger vehicles who enter the congestion pricing zone through the Queens-Midtown, Hugh L. Carey, Holland and Lincoln Tunnels will receive a $5 credit during daytime hours. Motorcycles will get a $2.50 discount, small commercial trucks will get a $12 credit and larger trucks will get $20 off. Drivers who cross into Manhattan over the George Washington Bridge, north of the congestion zone, would not receive a discounted toll.
emimently reasonable. now if they just got serious about the long distance and jersey-to-long island congestion caused by having the necessary traffic pass through the Bronx and Manhattan we could really clear out a lot of current traffic that has currently valid reasons to be dumping onto surface streets and the cross Bronx mess right now, but could really do with entirely different paths.
that's right baby we're talking long island sound and outer harbor bridges/tunnels/bridge-Tunnels and also hooking up the top of the turnpike to the thruway directly to get the damn trucks off surface roads and the weird out of the way movements they currently do to reach 287/87 baby. and completing the multiple harbor rail Tunnels and building modern cross Hudson rail bridges south of Poughkeepsie to allow for more effective freight rail use.

Welcome to Aurora Bay, [LUCAS DONOVAN]! I couldn’t help but notice you look an awful lot like [TOM HOLLAND]. You must be the [TWENTY-FIVE] year old [STUDENT AT AURORA BAY COLLEGE]. Word is you’re [CHARMING] but can also be a bit [RECKLESS] and your favorite song is [I WAS A TEENAGE ANARCHIST BY AGAINST ME]. I also heard you’ll be staying in [OCEAN CREST APARTMENTS]. I’m sure you’ll love it!
basics
Full Name: Lucas Donovan Nickname(s): Luke Date of Birth: September 8th, 1997 Age: Twenty-five Height: 5′9″ Gender & Pronouns: Cis-man & he/him Orientation: Pansexual Occupation: film studies student at Aurora Bay college, YouTuber/blogger Relationship status: Single
bio
When others asked 'why?', Lucas was constantly asking 'why not?', even when he was a young child. He was a menace, always full of energy and plenty of willingness to explore everything. Every single day he had to be picked up from yet another place, and as he got older, his parents struggled to keep him at home.
Lucas was quick to pick up plenty of hobbies. he was bursting with energy, and it made sense for him to sign up for just about any sports activity available in school; he tried out football, he tried out soccer, he tried out basketball, and even chess. And when fads came and went, he tried out parkouring, planking in the weirdest places, or climbing the highest of buildings. Nothing was ever enough for Lucas, and he wanted to experience more and more. Whether it was surfing or diving, or climbing up the tallest buildings and mountains, he couldn't get enough.
It was a natural progression for him to shift to filming himself doing the craziest things. At first, it wasn't a lot - whether it was just surfing or trying to explore underwater- but as time went on, Lucas got more and more curious, more and more willing to do more. Slowly but surely, the number of viewers behind his videos went up, and after a particularly challenging video, Lucas became relatively known. It wasn't why he was filming himself or why he as doing everything - at this point, he was just an adrenaline junkie - but the added bonuses surely helped.
The extra money he got from the views and the random brand deals helped Lucas significantly. Finally, he was able to afford a lot more, and just a little under a year ago, he took a break from his studies at Aurora Bay College and decided to travel the States. Buying a motorcycle was easy, packing up the essentials even more so, and after making sure he had the right equipment, Lucas took off.
Exploring the weirdest and the most common places in the States took far longer than Lucas expected, but it was worth it. Not only it brought in more views and more excitement, but it also left him with plenty of valuable footage he had not yet shared with anyone. Returning to Aurora Bay just a little under a week ago felt weird, but Lucas is excited to be able to jump right back into the studies he had paused so he can create his personal masterpiece out of all the footage he had gotten during his travels. And yet, his mind is already focused on finding something new, something just as exciting to explore. After all, life is short, so why waste it?

MOTHER: Abigail Dawson ( née Clark )
FATHER:  Pope Dawson
TWIN SISTER: Andromeda “Andy” Dawson †
CHARACTER HISTORY [TW: DRUG ABUSE, OVERDOSE, DEATH]
Percy hadn’t always been a good kid, but he was surely one of the better ones. Pushed away with a scowl and enough lectures to curve his interest in the usual rebellion most of his peers had, he found other ways to explore the world and its limits. He was born and raised in Seattle and crossed the threshold of a white picket fence the day he left the hospital. For a long time, he thought of that fence as the gates to his kingdom but little did he know that it was his father’s way of keeping the struggles that plagued their family far away.
The Dawson’s weren’t a picture perfect family, but they had some shine to their grime. Percy and his sister, Andromeda, were inseparable and he was always the one pulling her away from the things their father advised them against. The two were different, but they had a loyalty like no other and so when Andy passed away their junior year of college, everything he ever knew seemed to have finally spoiled. He believed every chance he saved up, every karma point reserved for him to share with his sister, had not just rotted but never existed at all. More importantly, his father had never prepared them for the world he had belonged to. He hadn’t protected them.
After his sister’s death, his family seemed to shrivel up under their grief and his parents divorced. His father relocated to his sister’s happy place in Hidehill, and PJ stayed far away from it. He couldn’t understand trying to chase a memory in those places forgotten from their youth and more importantly, ruined by the person his sister had eventually become after she began taking drugs. He had done his best to be a bridge between her and their parents, but it wasn’t enough. That guilt ate away at him and one night he gave in to the poison that took his sister’s life, and he’s yet to stop.
PRESENT DAY
He lived with his mother after the divorce but after his use became too heavy, and sleeping on porches in the middle of winter after she refused to let him come in high, he decided maybe he needed some change but not without raising a little hell first. He’s come to Hidehill not to turn a new leaf, but find another reason of spite to carry on. He hopes that he can use whatever sympathy his father has left until it’s run dry, and until he’s on to his next move.
HEADCANONS
He wasn’t the best child but compared to Andy he was the family’s golden boy.
Due to the closeness of him and his twin it was no surprise that they wanted to attend the same college together. At college Andy got involved with a man who introduced her to the party scene and the drugs that went along with it and Percy watched her fall deeper and deeper into the hole. He tried his best to pull her out of it, flushing her slash whenever he could, etc. But eventually Andy pulled away to push herself deeper into her toxic relationship where her addition ended up overwhelming her.
He was concerned when he hadn't heard from her and was the one who ended up finding her. It was a lot for him to process and from that point leading up to her funeral Percy was there to move her belongings from college back home and ended up finding her drugs and he felt inclined to try them to feel closer to her and he hasn't really stopped. He's not at the point of addiction but the fact that he's taken this troubling path is alarming especially to his mother. This resulted in her locking him out of the house and him spending nights on the porch because she wouldn't let him in high. He's still got his care free spirit but over the years has gotten more rebellious and reckless to go along with his adventurous side. He waited for his mother to go to work one morning, after she caved and let him back into the house and packed his belongings to go to his sister's favorite place and ended up at his father's/their vacation house's door step. So Dawson isn't aware of Percy's drug usage at this point and yeah he's still going through it.

Chapter 20 finished, we’re at just over 60,000 words, and we are a chapter or two away from heading back to England. I’m thinking I can get the rest of the Normandy content I want into one chapter (the last patrol, moving down onto Utah Beach) which will be followed by a chapter with most of the transit (hon. mention Don Malarkey & Alton Moore smuggling the motorcycle back & driving to Aldbourne vs the rest of the paratroopers having to go by train).
Some of my pacing issues from earlier in the story seem to have worked themselves out, but I understand the first few chapters may feel like a bit of a slog. ._.
There will be some interesting moments in England (and a “ft. Sobel” moment as well) but the speed will really start picking up once we get into Holland. I have so, so many plans for Holland...

“Don’t shoot! I’m unarmed!”
Random Sentence Starters:
It had taken them so dang long to get this far south. The north was still poisoned and perilous, and their journey had been a leap-frog of sorts from old Whitetails cache to the next where the could find replacement cartridges for gas-masks, or better protective clothing. A tic-tack across the state park they had all once loved, but the bombs had ravaged the mountains, lingering over the higher ground without mercy.
The change in terrain from the Whitetail mountains to the Henbane had been obvious and welcome; the sky brighter, air breathable and safe. But the land had changed; vague landmarks echoed at them, changed and damaged over the years, and some places looked completely different. Holland Valley's rolling plains of grasses and arable farm fields were gone and endless sand dunes existed there instead.
Picking the way across for his small group, Eli kept an eye out at the front and Tammy brought up the rear. They had been through too much to get ambushed now. There were signs for a place called Prosperity that claimed safety for anyone. So they followed them, even if they made no sense; the only Prosperity he had known was across the river and that weird Tweak kid had made it into a strange firing-range of a town.
There was movement in the undergrowth of the forested section they came to and Eli raised his old assault rifle just as the woman's eyes met his and her hands shot into the air. "Don't shoot! I'm unarmed!"
The rifle stayed where it was, but his finger wasn't on the trigger. Instead, Eli was scanning this woman up and down and trying to decipher what faction she might belong to. She had regular clothing on; worn faded jeans, scuffed boots and a threadbare sweater. A rifle hung across her back and basket for foraging was on the ground by her feet.

"Who are you with? Prosperity, the peggies or those motorcycle assholes?"
