Thoughts on the time ending of hd
like, as an ending in general, or as an ending for any of my characters?
in general, i really like it. pretty much all of the HD endings have an undercurrent of tragedy and/or monkey's-paw-esque horror to them, and time is no different. you're getting most of what you asked for, sure- you're going to be mostly immortal- but the sixth city will fall one day and your lease will eventually become worthless. and then where will you be? living out your days as an unaging bystander in a neath that's no longer yours? will there even be a point anymore? was there ever one to begin with? and that's not even getting into the obvious horror of outliving everyone you've ever known and cared about. or the fact the masters are arguably shortcharging you by giving you peach brandy rather than cider, which they very much have, and very much can expend whenever they damn well feel like it.
beyond the tragic angle, however, it's full to the brim with roleplay opportunities. there's tons of ways to spin a time ending character! maybe your FLPC earnestly loves london and chooses to prolong its existence as much as possible. maybe they're terrified of death and trying to avoid it at all costs. maybe they're simply an overly-ambitious landlord who's way too enthusiastic about being able to legally tax the entire fifth city and then some. hell, maybe they're a die-hard mr fires stan who didn't hear about the LF diamond ending until they'd already started getting really good at card games. whatever the case may be, time is more than accommodating for you, and i really like that in an ambition ending. it's probably the most open-ended HD treasure you can get.
also, you REALLY piss off the masters if you choose it. those fuckers are SO mad it is SO funny. you should always antagonize the evil capitalist spacebats it is literally always morally correct.
TLDR; while i didn't choose time myself, i really like it and i understand everyone who did. it's a great ending with a lot of roleplay opportunities and potential impacts on both the setting and your character as a whole. it also ties in great with (what i view as) the themes of heart's desire, what with the "you got what you wished for but it's only a false and temporary fulfillment" of it all.
