Book 7 - Crisis, Ideological clashes and cultural mutations in the first half of the 20th century

Part 2 - Post-War Portugal

(small important context that wasnt mentioned because Book 6 isnt included in the exam. Portugal is a Republic now, we shot the king and the king's heir)

Portugal participated in the First World War, and as a result, all of the previous economic issues just got worse in every way possible, with inflation, and the rise of the cost of living. Politicaly the Republic is a complete fucking mess. In the 16 years that the Republic lasted we had 7 elections, 8 different presidents, and FORTY-FIVE DIFFERENT GOVERNMENTS. The monarchists hated the Republic, the catholics hated the secular policies of the government, the middle classe had their purchase power go down, and the workers lived in misery. With the sucess of marxism-leninism in Russia, the middle class, big landowners and capitalists, very fearful of communism, wanted a strong government to fix everything. Marshall Gomes da Costa couped the government, but was then later couped by general Óscar Carmona, and the country became a military dictatorship.

Part 3 - The sharpening of political and social tensions after the 30s

As the world was recovering from the damages of the First World War, in 1929 the Wallstreet stock market crashed. Since most of the stock was bought by loans that now could no longer be paid back banks closed down. Many unitedstatian businesses went bankrupt, and milions of unitedstatians lost their jobs and went into poverty. In an attempt to reduce imports and save money, the United States increased taxes over imports(similar to the previously talked about mercantilism) and also cut off their loans to Europe, which led to the European economies(dependent on those loans), and third-world countries(dependent on the exportation of raw materials) to have their economies be heavily damaged, turning the crisis global, as international trade colapses. The Great Depression has begun.

Faced with this crisis, the ultraliberal "laissez-faire" policies were put in doubt, and the various governments started implementing intervencionist measures, making the State have an active role in the economy. The idea of the welfare-state, a State that takes an active role guaranteeing the well-being and happiness of it's citizens, is also born. These measures are first put in practice in the United States, with Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies, which later spread to Europe.

Faced with the crisis, other states, such as Germany and Italy, fell instead to Fascism, an ideology born in Italy by Benito Mussolini, defined by a series of characteristics. Totalitarianism, total disdain for individual liberties; Nationalism, places the "glory" of the nation as the most important thing above all else; Elites, not believing that all men are equal only the best of the best, the elites, have the right to be in government; Cult of Personality, the heads of state are seen as "heroes" that should be worshiped and never questioned; Framing of the masses, by creating various institutions that made sure the people were fully in support of the State; Autarcy, intervencionist economic policy that promotes the self-suficiency of the nation.

These regimes also resorted to violence and repression to maintain the population in check, with milicias and a political police.

The German Nazi regime led by Adolf Hitler is highlighted among Fascist regimes for it's extreme obsession with the "superiority of the Aryan race", leading to horrendous violent crimes against various groups. They promoted eugenics against the disabled, as they were seen as nothing but a burden to the state; Germans with "superior racial qualities" were selectively bred together; they considered queer people as "socialy abhorrent"; and they also promoted the subjugation and/or extermination of undesirable ethnic groups, such as Slavs, the Roma, and most notoriously, the Jews.

Inicialy Jewish products were boycotted, then marriages between Jews and Aryans were banned, then Jewish businesses and property were confiscated, then Jews were segregated, forbidden from having any job, or going out in public at all, then they were imprisoned in Jewish ghettos, then sent to concentration camps to do forced labour, and then with the "final solution" they were exterminated in mass.

In the USSR, now led by Joseph Stalin, the Great Depression had practicaly no effect, as they were already internationaly isolated, and Stalin went along with his "Socialism in One Country" policies, looking to consolidate Socialism in the USSR before it's expanded elsewhere. There was mass colectivization of camps(involving brutal treatment of the kulaks), where new collective farms(called kolkhozes) were established. The Soviet economy was centralized through a system called Economic Planning, done through the 5-Year Plans; certain economic goals were established to be achieved within a period of 5 years by all means necessary, each plan focused on certain economic sectors. These plans proved to be very successful, and by the Second World War, the USSR was already the third world power. And the repressive totalitarianism of the State, through a Cult of Personality, a new political police(the NKVD), and characterized by the "Great Purge"

Interesting details about the 3 houses cast (From dialogue in ‘Heroes’)

The first name Ferdinand’s father is ‘Ludwig’ and he is apparently an insufferable braggart who also said his own name alot

Before moving into her uncle’s castle, Anette spent her early childhood in a small, humble house in the Capital. Gilbert & his wife couldn’t afford domestic servants so she did the chores herself.

Mercedes’ father died in a “conflict in the empire”. Before he died, he taught her mom the secret recipe that Mercedes mentions in the Constance and Dedue supports. A bit of her fatalistic passive attitude early on comes from feeling that she couldn’t change much about her life while she and her mom were being mistreated at the Bartels’ home

Claude has a lot of fun with the mushroom poison.

Despite their student’s glowing opinions, Byleth isn’t actually all that confident about their professor-ing, which is probably not unexpected given how the job was suddenly dumped in their lap.

They’re somewhat uncertain about whether they have real connections with people beyond just the professional level. I guess that’s another parallel to Edelgard.

Someone observed that they look “more like a mercenary and less like a teacher” while they’re fighting.

Apparently their students described them as “a bit eccentric at times”

They seem to like/appreciate it when other ppl can pick up what they’re really feeling/thinking. (I really hope Jeralt knew that)

It’s considered rare for Claude and Dimitri to agree on anything

The sad thing is that the trio is noted to be quite effective when they cooperated. I guess we also saw this in Cindered Shadows

There is a hilarious sequence where Byleth is like, “This may call for drastic measures” and everyone starts looking at Claude and correctly assuming that he’s probably already cooking up some sort of crazy plan

Ferdinand apparently likes the “refined way” that Edelgard swings her axe

Petra considers hunting one of the most important skills you can have, both because you acquire many crucial materials (like leather etc) and because it also hones a lot of skills. Bridgid is very green & plentiful, so most people do some degree of hunting and even the rulers are expected to know it. Someone remarks that it’s probably a culture that places emphasis on self-sufficiency. That’s an interesting way to think about it, especially if you think about Petra’s attitudes, how she approaches even this cobjectively crappy political hostage situation as an opportunity and has a very problem-solvy approach to things. I’d noted that, but I’d never connected it with the hunting thing; I thought it was just Petra being awesome, which it basically still is, but it adds a cool layer to consider how she got this way and how this may be her way to stay close to her homeland’s values even in exile.

“In Brigid, there is a phrase we say. A gray sky will be pierced by the sun. A raging tide will be leading to land. Beyond failure, success is waiting.”

Hubert seemed to know that he ten elites fought against the godess even pre timeskip.

He also sees Edelgard as one of the few ppl who really paid attention to him when he was younger - I guess this goes with this understated complex he has about his looks & personality.

Edelgard likes to just lie around and relax, but only when she’s all alone. At least pre timeskip or pre holy-tomb scene she didn’t think like she could really be herself in the company of others. She does seem to put some deliberate thought into what image to project/embody

Dimitri seems to think that having a crest (and high status) makes it his duty to protect & take care of the people – I guess that’s another way in which he’s completely ruled by obligation. He gets characteristically intense about this. “My life was never mine to begin with, I guess I haven’t the right to throw it away”

the glorious “nice weather” exchange has already been posted. Edelgard (and Lysithea) are the first to clarify that they shouldn’t bring their grudges into this situation since they’re not in Fodlan atm.

Edelgard and Claude are beyond shook when AzureMoon!Dimitri actually agrees. Chill Dimitri is apparently not something they ever imagined. He is obviously the most changed in “his” route, with the other two its no less profound but a lot more subtle.

Lysithea has an interest in botany (now I really want her to talk plants with Bernie )

Hilda: “I haven’t heard about there being a future me here. She’s probably busy relaxing on a beach or something…”

Mercie and Anette immediately reassured each other that their future selves are probably cute af. Aww

This is probably unsurprising, but future!Dimitri is still very tormented by his less than stellar actions during and right after the timeskip

Small Dimitri is heartbreakingly surprised to hear that there’s any version of him that’s alive and on the throne, though he hides it because his friends (or at least Annie and Mercie) did not have such doubt

Edelgard decides from the get-go not to concern herself with the future version of her. I get the sense that she really wants to avoid the scenario where she allows her resolve about what she feels absolutely must be done to falter after meeting a regretful future version of herself; I really like this, I know some haters will probably spin this into something about her not caring about the consequences of her actions but it really circles back to how she’s philosophically all about self-determination & can’t let something like a future possibility determine what she does… nor can she back off a sacrifice meant for the greater good just because it might turn out poorly for her (which it does, just not in the CF timeline that this particular future version is from)

Cut to the future versions who have contrasting ideas about what to do about their tiny selves. Claude thinks they should not risk causing any time paradoxa. Dimitri ponders the thought of warning his younger self (and past!Byleth). Edelgard doesn’t think it would make any difference at all, especially since they would each be showing their tiny self the timeline where they win.

Though I guess one think to consider here is probably that Dimitri would be the most surprised by a sucessful older version of himself

Claude eventuallly agrees, since they were each doing what they thought was best (Claude, too, is sort of uniquely situated to grasp this as the one who can part on good terms with each of the other two in their respective timelines) – though he’s hoping that the time crash will maybe send their younger selves in a different direction (in which you see that this is distinctly VW!Claude & thus a bit more hopeful)

the others actually agree & it ends with a fun semi-friendly sparring match

Edelgard wants to show past!Byleth how awesome she’s going to be in the future

it is very in line with my interpretation of her character that she would describe her own disproportional strenght as “hideous”

Claude’s lines are solid gold in this. Like he’s just being aggressive irrevent to bridge the obvious awkwardness “Go on, we’re old dining hall palls!”

This gets Lysithea wondering what might’ve happened if they’d actually graduated as planned. I mean I kind of respect that they DIDNT put in a golden ending but I guess if you want one you can imagine that they got one after returning from Askr I guess.

let’s just hope that “the timeline none of them experienced” doesn’t just turn out to be silver snow lol

Marinette did not sign up for this part 8

update at last!

Marinette almost screamed when she saw the knitting needles on her balcony. It wasn’t even her birthday yet. Was he around? Taunting her?

School wasn’t helping. She kept her eyes on the windows.

It didn’t help her team was scanning the area constantly… and she was certain that Kagami somehow got out of school as she could spot Ryuuko before school even started, and her shadow had’t moved often.

Alya, Nino and Adrien weren’t leaving her side. Kim had taken to joining them (and with him, Max and Alix) with Kim determined to get Marinette to wear one of his hoodies since “you look cold.”

She knew that was code. ‘Let me help.’ She wasn’t sure this was something safe for them to help with.

“Thanks but I’m good!” was highly ineffective.

Before lunch Kim had his hoodie on her. It made it harder to find her with the change from her usual outfits once Adrien and Alix stole her hairbands.

They were doing a plain sight disguise. She knew it.

Going to Alix’s after school helped a bit with that.

She still felt eyes on her. She couldn’t tell who’s.

Alix was the one to break out the guardian translations with her dad. The Kubdels knew more than most of her team—time travel side effects after all. It was a big part of why she could trust them in the first place: Alix wanted to help and her father knew there would be a Ladybug in Paris before giving Alix the family heirloom. When Marinette saw it after studying the miraculous for a bit and asking Fu if there could be two rabbit miraculouses… it lead to Fu merging the two (from two separate timelines).

In the one Mr. Kubdel was from, a girl named Bridgette took up the role of Ladybug and was followed around by a questionable Black Cat. Mr. Kubdel’s grandfather prevented that timeline from happening—changing key events and all—but was prepared for the chances another rabbit would be needed. His son was not a good fit… (poor research, questionable retention, and overall bad at delicate work) meanwhile Alix had street art done quickly and intricately, fast reflexes, and adored learning history to the point some topics had been re-written in the curriculum for “the complete BS this hack is pushing” and “obvious refusal to stick to the facts” among other objections with heavily cited and sourced works to back up her claims. To a truly terrifying degree.

Its also why once they were out of sight, Alix and Mr. Kubdel and her escaped to one of the secret passaged kept off the current schematics for Miraculous related reasons (escape without being seen leaving) and Alix brought them into her burrow sans ‘time windows’ for her peace of mind.

“What do you want us to do Ladybug?” Bunnix asked.

That was the question…

They tracked that the issue began with what let Robin identify her in the first place. The most likely culprit was the flaming akuma… if Alix went as Bunnix and helped Ladybug catch the butterfly or got it someone else, then Robin would never have identified her, and their current situation wouldn’t be happening.

She wouldn’t be hunted by the Ghosts of Gotham.

But then… her team wouldn’t exist, not as it does.

Chat wouldn’t know who she is.

She wouldn’t exist.

She… she wasn’t willing to give that up.

“We’re not undoing the past.”

Bunnix nodded, gliding around the empty space.

Mr. Kubdel opened and closed his mouth before finally offering his own suggestion. “Perhaps, we could capture them.”

Marinette ran over that option. It wasn’t bad. Not by a long shot… but the capture would deprive Gotham of its vigilantes…

“We only keep Robin, any others captured are cut loose as soon as possible and removed.”

“But Robin is the one that knows your identity,” Bunnix reminded her.

“The others probably figured it out already. But that’s not why we’re keeping him.”

Mr. Kubdel gestured for her to clue them in.

“Remember what the Aesir and Vanir did to end their dispute?”

Mr. Kubdel searched his memories until it hit him. “Ah. That.”

Marinette nodded. “Add in a game of chase, move to the home turf, and we have our plan.”

“And you’re bait?” Bunnix checked, no longer moving about as she absorbed the plan.

If you were a civilian in Paris, you might catch sight of what must be someone’s idea of a joke. As not only were there Big Justice Members running around with your local heroes—who up until this point had only worked with one other group (Quantics) who were Europe-based.

But seeing some guy in black with a bluebird on his chest go head to head with Rena, Miss Sting and a very pissed off Monkey King and Pegasus (since when does he get mad like that? Kid looks like he’s going to end Bluebird) was not a sight you were able to process at the moment. Wonder Woman joining the group was the cherry on top. and Carapace was moving civilians out of the way and sometimes caging them all in Shelter.

You also catch an enraged Chat Noir and Ryuuko tearing after some fashion disaster in a cape down the street. A cape for godsake. In broad daylight. Green Lantern was flying after them, and since when does Chat’s suit… move? Like, you’re pretty sure that’s not normal… at all.

Ryuuko and Fashion Disaster (FD for short) are sword fighting. Chat is attacking FD at any opening. Viperion is with them, sometimes shouting directions. Green Lantern seems to be keeping the fight from spilling over.

A check on the Miraculous News App shows pics of Fashion Disaster trying to get too close to the baker’s daughter. You know, the one that kind of slips the heroes snacks and is seen with Chat randomly at her balcony? The one you’re 30% sure he’s crushing on and in some war with Ryuuko for the heart of. Why else would the two be seen so often around it?—Akuma school is across the street.

You blink a few times when you realize that baker’s daughter is visibly scared of FD (and you’d be too if a random Mask with a sword showed up) and apparently had Bunnix with her at the time to help move faster.

That meant whatever happened in another time had to be bad…

Bunnix mentioned that in the world where she went Princess Justice there wasn’t much to stop her…

You can see why the team is a tad… okay, really overzealous. You’re pretty sure Chat tried to cataclysm FD after Ryuuko sent him flying with the air attack.

You manage to get a better view (For the People! and not to mock the villain later—no siree!) of the Bluebird fight. Dude gets taken down by a combination of things in short sucession—Monkey King landing a hit with his power, Wonder Woman’s lasso (through a portal—good on you Pegasus!) that he got pulled through, a flute to the head by Best Girl Rena, and paralyzed by your favorite striped heroine.

The take down shocked FD and Green Lantern caged the guy (teen? Kid? They look small.) and moved them over by Wonder Woman and her group, some of whom dispersed to recharge.

Never claim Bruce is not a dedicated parent. The best? He hopes not. The worst? He has met Stephanie’s parents, and he is far from them. And Cas’s. And he knows he’s not as bad as Rah’s. He is dedicated (and a serial adopters, but shhh). How does he know this?

He managed to reactivate his kid’s trackers and noted where they intersected and looked into properties, deeds, and children in the school across from the bakery Stephanie and Cass had taken to camping out in when not at their hotel rooms. So far, he narrowed down his daughter to three possible candidates—Mireille Caquet, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Laura Pretre. The only three girls in the age range he suspects Ladybug is in (he paid attention to the early videos and crossed her references, videogames and knowledge of the teens’ involved (re: knowing their names before the class became an akuma gold mine). They are also the only three from his candidate pool who were adopted or single mother of the right age to have caught his younger self’s attention—a few interviews of the heroes let slip that Ladybug’s parents and her team’s parents are unaware of what they do, and her vicious support for child support and adoptive parents in a few akuma instances gave credit to her belonging to one of those two groups.

It was between Marinette and Laura in his opinion—they both ran a fashion boutique online. Mireille was a model the two shared, but still a possibility.

Jason was helped him narrow it down—a consolation for being stuck in bed and not allowed on patrol for the night. Apparently he was also trying to call off the identity search in-person to prevent any accidental identity reveals and prevent further stressing of “Lady Bat”.

Bruce may have smiled at the nickname. He doubted his daughter would appreciate it, but nicknames had a strange habit of sticking if Jason gave it… for better or worse in Tim’s case. (He was glad that Replacement was replaced with Tiny Tim, Timbo and Timmy).

He also noted that the girls were intent on Gabriel Agreste being Hawkmoth… and had a strange obsession with his relationship to Mayura given their search histories. Tim was still deciding between designers, and he did note that Marinette ranked highly on there… which was both a relief and terrifying.

That meant everyone but his daughter’s “business conduct supervisor” (Adrien Agreste, only son of Gabriel Agreste, primary candidate as Hawkmoth) had been akumatized and someone she had to personally fight while they hurled who knew what at her. He doubted it was good for her mental health. (Not that he has much room to talk, but still.)

Damian and Dick were refusing to respond to his messages, and likely engaged in something.

Until Green Lantern lit up his screen with a pained look. “Bats, this is not what I meant by get your house in order.”

The view panned to Nightwing and Robin currently held by a very pissed off Wonder Woman. With Chat Noir glaring at Robin, something off with his suit.

Batman sighed deeply. “I told you those two weren’t responding since Robin returned with Red Hood last night.”

Green Lantern looked at someone off screen, clearly taking commands from them.

“Uh, yeah… We’re having Supergirl get the other three back Stateside. Miss Sting and Chat want to interrogate these two since Robin was caught around a civilian they keep an eye on.”

Batman could hear what wasn’t being said. Robin went to talk to Ladybug’s civilian identity and it blew up in his face.

“… are any of you allowed to be present to monitor the interrogation?”

He doubted the teens would get violent. (he hoped) but there were too many unknowns.

A hiss from Chat Noir ended his ‘not likely to get violent’ train of thought. His one of his sons was caught stalking their leader, who he has previously tried to kill, and another aimed a gun at a member of their team. Violence was on the table.

And he couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

“Ladybug will choose who comes.”

Robin looked up at him from the background. “Permission to ask Father a question?”

There was a moment when everyone turned to the figure off screen, likely Miss Sting given Ladybug’s refusal to be in the Justice League’s presence.

Robin turned back to the screen, Hal moving closer to give him a better view of Robin. HE was largely unbruised on his face and his breathing was even. Positive indicators.

“Am I allowed to unmask?”

Batman froze. Jason looked up from his spot. He could feel Babs choking on something in shock.

Hal and Diana reacted somehow, but they weren’t in screen.

He meant to do this far later. When she adjusted. To her alone, and later let her team know. ease them into it—there was no knowing one of their identities without knowing the rest. Not with how Ladybug’s mind worked. And he doubted she kept many secrets from her team.

“…I am not opposed to it. Preferably keep it to those you trust with that knowledge alone.”

Robin nodded. “Understood Father.”

When Ladybug showed up, she could feel everyone’s eyes on her. She ignored it as best she could, especially the silent Nightwing and Robin… possible assassins. Sent by her biological father who never even met her. it was going to be a long plan execution (and gods, she still needed to double check on the Hawkmoth as Gabriel theory and work out how to remove him from the company without screwing over a decent chunk of the fashion industry workers from design, store front to manufacturers and suppliers. And emotional whiplash of Hawkmoth trying to kill his own son twice. And the times he tried to manipulate her into Princess Justice and have it Stick in the timeline).

All it took was one look at Pegasus. One look and she blocked all the other issues swimming in her mind.

“Ah, we’re going there then… It’s a good thing Cowboy is resting for the moment…” Pegasus shook his head. “Voyage!”

Ladybug looked them over.

“Chat, Miss Sting, Rena, and Pegasus, I need you with me. The rest of you, patrol or return to civilian life until I return. If you come across an akuma, jar them. Contact us if you need a fix only.”

Carapace nodded, looking over at Kim and Alix. “We won’t let you down.”

Ladybug nodded, her eyes narrowing at the two League members present. She was still debating contacting the ‘only in an emergency do you contact this rogue branch’ group… they were once lead by a Chat Noir candidate, or still were… she wasn’t clear on that detail. What she did know is they went by League of Shadows in the book, but it was noted they favored violent forms of destruction, and she wasn’t sure if they needed that method… didn’t want them to need it either.

But the book stated the Amazons were loyal to Ladybugs. “Wonder Woman, please ensure the Bats are out of my city before we return.”

“Of course Ladybug.”

She turned to the Green Lantern. A shakier alliance with the lanterns historically, but also known to tell the Ghosts of Gotham off, and so far he’s shown a high favor of her team’s stance over his technical ally’s. Perhaps a personal grudge, or maybe the Justice League operated more like Gabriel’s company—a chain of command, specific roles somewhat dependent on each other, and no one had to like one another…

Wonder Woman was better to ensure the Bats left.

Green Lantern was the one holding Robin in his ring. And his “Core” as the book said, was most responsive to Ladybug who didn’t hesitate to protect others and themselves at once. That they showed a level of comradery during times when the Order followed philosophies that could be linked the idea of “personal and individual impact upon others with one’s actions and choice” was the exact wording.

She hoped she was doing this right.

“Green Lantern, if you would be so kind as to come with us and bring Murder Robin? You are free to roam once we get there, but don’t try to locate where on earth we are then. It’s the one place Hawkmoth hasn’t been able to reach, and I’d like to keep it that way.”

Green Lantern and Robin both agreed readily.

Nightwing looked like he really wanted to argue. A lot.

Wonder Woman somehow kept him from speaking as they left.

Marinette could finally breath when they entered the Temple. She wasn’t able to bring back the Guardians. She could bring back their scrolls, the library, the training rooms. It also meant they were far from Paris, from Hawkmoth’s reach, and that now the real plan had to be put in action… how to keep the bats out of Paris and her secret identity a secret. (Hawkmoth could wait. She needed time to work that out, and once she was sure, once the nagging doubt and what ifs stopped plaguing her… then she’d look for that solution… maybe Adrien could inherit early or they could arrange for his father to be caught committing tax fraud or something after getting Nooroo and Duusuu? Anything to ensure he was punished for his actions and that Adrien isn’t caught in the crossfire. She can’t lose the literal other half of her soul. She just. Can’t.)

Ladybug paused when she looked over Chat. His suit was… moving. Shadows were moving on his suit. That. That can’t be good.

“Chat, bring Murder Robin somewhere he can’t find a weapon, Miss Sting, make sure no one attacks anyone in any way, am I clear?”

Miss Sting gave a curt Nod while Chat hissed, but relented easily enough.

Green Lantern put a hand on her shoulder while Pegasus ran off to the library, likely to check up on his own additions to the place… bringing it into the twenty-first century was not easy.

“Going to check-in with what’s going on with your Cat?”

Ladybug glanced at him. “He’s my partner.”

“Pretty sure that’s what a Black cat is for a Ladybug,” Green Lantern said.

Star Vs the Forces of Evil Reviews: The Blood Moon Ball (1-15)

Welcome back.. though to most of you probably just joining me, welcome. I’ve been on a sorta hiatus from revewiing due to a combination of procrastination, depression, and being really busy. But I finally decided it was time to put boots to the ground and get back to doing what I love: Going on way too long about children’s television. As such, with She Ra taking a bow a few weeks back and nailing it I got to thinking about another show that just so happened to end the year before: Star Vs the Forces of Evil. Part of it was very simple: She ra ended on a trriumphant note, making a well set up romance that had been it’s backbone canon, having a wonderful final battle, tons of payoff and a throughly happy ending that satisfied all involved and got tons of well earned coverage for having a deep, meaningful relationship between two lesbians finally coming together being the thing that saves the universe. It was freaking great. Meanwhile a year prior Star Vs, after having been treated like toilet dinner by disney for no good reason by having it’s final season shoved out over a few sundays after a yearlong hiatus.. ended not with a bang, but with a wah wah trumpet. The series ending was unsatisfying, left more questions than answers, had the title character loose all likeablity and was in general miserable. I hadn’t been this pissed off at a finale since How I Met Your Mother and hadn’t seen a romance botched this badly in animation since “Merry Christmas Mordecai”. It was BADDDDD. However it did make me want to go back to the series; To revisit the good, the bad and the just plain weird to remember what made me love the series, what made me want to throw my tv into a river before reminding myself “No dude, shit’s expensive. “, and what COULD have been, what SHOULD have been and what WASN’T. So i’ll be reviewing assorted episodes.. and the best place to start for me was with the introduction of one of the series best characters, as well as at the same time the start of a ship that was a good idea at first but would slowly take the series down with it as it started to fall apart. This is Blood Moon Ball. There will be blood, and a dead horse, after the cut.

Before we get into the episode, one of the series most notable and honestly a damn good one, for those 2 of you not familiar with the series a quick refresher: Star VS is the story of Star Butterfly, a rebelious 14 year old princess from the Kingdom of Mewni. Mewni is your standard medievil fantasy kingdom.. but you know with wifi because they have magic compacts that work as phones and large sale acess to the multiverse. Their also ruled over by a long sucession of queens with great and terrible magic power, which is channeld through an increidbly powerful wand that’s passed down from generation to generation. On her 14th birthday Star gets her turn with the wand.. and not long after sets everything on fire. Not wanting the kingdom to get blown up while Star figures out thing, her parents send her to Earth, and after bribing the school principal into enroling her, that’s not a joke on my part but an actual joke from the pilot, Star soon becomes an exchange student, boarding with the Diazes and soon becoming best friends with their teenage son Marco, a saftey obessed, shy talented martial artist. The two are frequently forced to beat up the hordes of Ludo, a spoiled monster king who wants the wand for himself. Things would get way darker... like in literally two seconds as the revelation star’s people stole mewni from the monsters and Star’s hatred being revealed to be partly racisim instead of standard hero and villian stuff. But that’s for future reviews. Today we have demons, internet commentors and ship tease to get to. So with the basic premise set up let’s finally get on with it. We open on the arrival of my boy and yours, hopefully, Tom Lucitor. Tom is the prince of the underworld, basically exactly what it sounds like: fire, brimstone, demons spooky scary skeltons sending shivers up your spine. He’s also Star’s ex boyfriend. How they broke up is.. never really explained. While more details about their relationship, includign the fact Tom bought Star her iconic Devil Horn headband on their frist date, were revealed in the tie-in spellbook, and reveals that star’s arson that got her sent to mewni happened right after her and tom broke up, but never explains WHY. My guess is since the series clearly frames the breakup as Tom’s fault in this episode and on his anger, they probably didn’t want a scene of him screaming his head off at star, either to keep him sympathetic or , more likely, because a scene of a teenage girl watching her boyfriend having a rage fueld breakdown that leads to htem breaking up would be MASSIVELY uncomfortable to watch and unlike some uncomfortable to watch scenes, wouldn’t tell us anything we didn’t know already. So unlike some later things they never pulled the trigger on this one at least makes sense. Anywho, Tom arrives, parking in the handicap spot (a nice little gag as Star’s crush at the time Oskar points it out, while the dead skeletal horse pulling tom’s carriage turns around to look at him), and all the girls stop and stare.. including Janna, who would probably regret this moment once she realize tom was a bad boy because he’s socially awkard and has anger issues. Basically he’s Kylo Ren but his redemption dosen’t come straight out of JJ Abrhams ass. Tom arrives at Star’s classroom, removes his shade and damn if he dosen’t have game.. but naturally showing up unnannaounced to her school (Not that TOm probably gets what school is as Mewni dosen’t have those, but still), basically assuming she’ll go out with him, after they had a messy breakup it dosen’t go well and we get a great cut of Star shoving tom back into his carriage.. we also get the best joke of the episode. Star: So take your invitation and your fire and your dead horse and go. Dead Horse: wait.. i’m dead? Sad but hilarious. Anyways it’s quickly conved to viewers like us that Tom has anger problems, but he insists to star he’s doing better: he has an anger managment counsler he takes with him places, Brian, voiced by the wonderful and weirdly in Disney’s pocket these days Stephen Root, and a bunny he pets. Before star can pet said bunny Marco , KARATE CHOPS TOM’S HAND OFF.. I just.. until this review I hadn’t sat back to consider just how freakishly strong that boy is , that he can just accidently chop off a hand. I mean tom may have weak joints or something but even after taking far worse blows later on his hands just.. don’t come off. Tom flies itnto a rage and it becomes clear that yeah, whatever happened, it was tom’s fault, and given the kind of rage she flies into, you can see why i’d assume the writers really didn’t want the audience to see him at his worst. I certainly don’t. Star both worried and clearly having seen this sort of thing go bad before urges Marco to run but tom quickly recovers, both reuniting with his hand and having calmed down, and he and Marco are formally introduced, with star explaning the invite. We also get a great line with marco encouraging her “Star never go with a preadator to a second location”. This show was damn good at getting shit past the radar and i’m here for it. Anyways, Star isn’t quite sold despite tom clearly TRYING to get better, and Tom , in a really nice move, gives her a bell and tiny hammer to summon his carriage with if she decides to go but leaves it up to her, not pressuring her or anything. For how selfish tom is initially.. this is a spark that shows h’es not a TERRIBLE person, just one who has some growing up to do. Marco however is not convinced and wants to go with, with Star teling him no because A) he wasn’t invited and it’d be rude to ask and B), she appricates the concerns but she can handle this, and implicily, despite her reckless nature knows this is a risk but knows if the night turns she can handle Tom, and that maybe he’s changed. Marco insists Tom can’t change.. which I find hilarious given his massive character arc to the point I had as eires ofessays planned, and one don about his growth before deciding to change formats to doing each ep of his journey instead every so often, to the point where two years on in the series timeline.. we’ve gone from Marco thinking Tom is a predator to...

But star decides to go and .. it’s clear from the subtext that while part of it is clear concern for star, Marco’s line about “it being fun here all the time” may mean that while he DOES have the best intentions.. part of him is jealousssssss. More on that in a bit. For now we go to the underworld with the second best gag of the episode as Tom is toning down the spookiness to please star, and one of the guys in the picture at the top insults him... and when tom asks which one he says me. We sadly don’t get an answer but it’s small gags like this that made me want to do this episode by episode. Star arrives.. and things quickly go south. Tom tries giving her a corsage that’s a live spider and she rejects it. This admitely looks bad on both as Tom , living in you know, a hell dimenson probably sees it as a sweet gesture, and Star is refusing it.. but star does so POLITELY, and for understandable reasons, and Tom is still clearly pissed about it. Not long after, they line up for what’s essentially a prom photo.. and to get Carried by a bucket of unicorn blood, another nice little gag. Star refuses since well her best friend is a unicorn, one of them anyway, or at least it’s head.. and yes one of the species in this series multiverse is a bunch of headless unicorns. IT’s wonderful. And star also notices tom needs his anger managment bunny and is clearly pissed about it when, having dated her for several months, clearly should’ve KNOWN this might bother her. That’s really tom’s problem here: He wants everything his way on his terms and only compromises if he thinks it’ll get star to do things with him. He’s made the PRETENSE of changing.. but he really dosen’t WANT to yet. He just wants her back and wants to change just enough to get her back so he can stop trying again. He also may , due to the underworld being diffrent and a place where being covered in a bucket of blood is a time honored tradition instead of the thing that turns a young mutant into a mass murderer, and yes I think a carrie x-men crossover would be the shit. He probably dosen’t GET that star wouldn’t like a spider corasge or bathing in her best friends blood.. but the problem isn’t that. that’s culture shock, that can be bridged with some talk.. the problem is tom dosen’t want to talk, he just wants her to do what he wants and things to be all cool and to get his way. Being a prince with two loving parents, we’ll meet them soon enough just not this episode, and tons of servants, I get the impressionf rom this and other episodes tom simply isn’t USED to not getting what he wants.He’s not USED to being told “No”, and thus has no way to deal with it healthily and isntead lashes out like an angry toddler. It dosen’t make his actions RIGHT but it does make them more understandable and makes it so Tom’s later growth FEELS natural depsite some of his sketchier actions beforehand.

Back at Marco’s house, Marco is depressed eating nachos in a sumbrero.. which if I had corn chips, cheese and a sombrero would probably be my daily life right about now. It’s then we get a WEIRD dropped bit, as Marco hears a weird piratey voice telling him the blood moon is the moon for lovers and stuff. This is IMPLIED to be his monster arm, from an earlier episode.. but it’s.. never explained. Whatever it was going to be was dropped. Which would be fine if the blood moon itself and the end of this episode didn’t get a full explination in season 4 with the writers clearly going back to it to resolve the dangling thread.. but still not explaning the spooky voice. I mean what was it? Marco’s pirate ancestor? the sea captain from the simpsons? the monster arm? terry that bastard? Burt Macklin FBI? Old Man Withers the guy who runs the amusment park? Dirk Dastardely? A sentient payphone? The alps? Tell us damn you! Okay that tangent aside Marco decides to party crash at the advice of the ominous voice.. seriously is it Flintheart Glomgold? Nevermind. Back at the ball star is bonding with a small skeletal fish int he magma punch whent his random asshole comes up and whines for a good minute,if hilariously so, about the ball being changed.

He’s feels, looks and acts like the combination of those morons who were mad adora wasn’t “as hot” in the she ra reboot and was aged down to a teenager and the threw it on the ground guy. After that interlude, tom shoos away a guy asking star to dance and the guy makes vauge comments about tom wanting his and star’s souls to be link while making kissy nosies. Before Tom can explain what he means by that, or at least lie about what he means by that, the blood moon is about the drop, the lights turn red and tom walks off because he wants the music to be perfect. And then Marco arrives in his really damn cool calevara outfit. Which fair play, I can see why, besides ship reasons, it gets a lot of art: it looks really damn neat. Speaking of shipping.. it’s time. Star, not realizing it’s marco, dances with him.. quite romantically in fact. It’s here that the show conciously starts Shipping star and marco together. Starco is born, and the scnee is really good: romantic, well animated, jsut great all around. While the ship would .. end up done rather poorly and lead to some really terrible stuff at the time.. it wasn’t abd and already shipping them I loved this and even now, even knowing what woudl come later... it’s not a bad sequence. The only bad thing is what would come later, but I can’t fault the writers of THIS EP for what they would do in a LATER ONE. That’s just not fair. The ship wasn’t bad to start and the later arc springing from it in season 2 would be good.. it just quickly went in bad directions as the series went on , then disappeared, then how it finallyc ame about was just awful. But as much as I want to.. I can’t blame the sequence on this. It didn’t create rabid shippers or poor writing, it was just good and deserves to be praised as such. Naturally tom takes this about as well as me when I found out HBO max wouldn’t be on roku at launch and prepares to murder Marco.. and promptly gets frozen by star who decides to wisely get out of there. It’s a ncie moment.. and reminder that Star is crazy powerful, as is the wand itself, because as we’ll see later, tom is no slouch himself in the power department, but even if her attack was from behind, she still stopped him in one move. So Star takes marco home and dresses him down for sneaking in, understandbly so: while it was an iffy situation, Star knew who she was dealing with and as shown at the end, was strong enough that tom was no threat to her, and given what we learn later, Tom’s parents would likely never let her come to real harm. For all her reckless decision making, Star thought this one out and Marco shoudl’ve repsectied that and didn’t for his own reasons. To his credit though he apologizes, Star admits to liking the dance, then the two speak in unison a few times, and we wont’ get followup on that till the last season! Roll credits. Final Thoughts: Blood Moon Ball is a spectacular ep. A good plot, a great introduction for tom, and great animation and humor really make the episode pop and it’s nice to get our first look at the underworld and tom himself. Tom would be back, and i’ll be back to tom eventually, but on it’s own the episode is really good and it’s standout sequence still holds up even as starco ended up in the sewer quality wise. All in all a great ep and a great starting point if you haven’t watched the show yet. Coming Soon: A return to Star in the near future probably since Tom is great and his second ep deserves love too, as do several other star eps, as well as a look at the saluna episodes of the loud house because i’m in a gay mood for obvious reasons, and a loud house mood for less obvious reasons. Making His Move: Part III

PART I PART II

(( Trigger Warning: Murder, everything will be beneath the cut ))

As Xyveth made his way back towards Whiteveil Estate, he shook his head at the fire that laid in his path. The Captain was hoping to make this a rather quick job, so he could meet up with his crew in Zandalar and Kul Tiras, but it seemed as though fate had other ideas in mind. As the estate came back into sight, a small grin came to the Captain’s face. The estate was in utter ruins. The walls around the building itself were gone, the windows of the estate were shattered, and most of the home was still burning from the explosion.

The Captain took another step, and the pain in his right leg shot upward, almost bringing the young elf to his knees once more. ‘No….I came t’end this….and one way o’ another, it’s ending…’ he thought to himself, glancing down to his belt, smiling as he saw the pistol he carried was mostly undamaged, a couple knicks and scratches from when he landed, but nothing he couldn’t either repair himself or pay someone to fix. He pulled his sabers from his belt, and made his way into the remnants of Whiteveil Estate.

As Xyveth crept into the home, the devilish little smirk he wore on his face only continued to grow. He remembered how much pride Verhen took in his home from when he was imprisoned here, so it did his heart good to see the home and it’s belongings in ruins. Xyveth still moved cautiously throughout the main chamber of the home, unsure who or what may have survived the explosion. As he made his way to one of the doorways leading from the main chamber, his brow perked up curiously. ‘This looks somewhat new…..’ he thought, allowing the shadows to envelop him once more before opening the door.

Upon opening the door, he found it led to a dim torch lit hallway, with what appeared to be another door at the end of the hall. Xyveth reached to his belt, and pulled his pistol from it, before continuing down the hallway.

As Xyveth made it to the end of the corridor, he noticed the door was locked, only to laugh slightly, The pain in his leg wasn’t getting any better, in fact it was getting worse. The ringing in his ears wasn’t much better then prior either, but he wasn’t leaving until either he was dead, or Verhen was. He aimed his pistol at the lock on the door, preparing to shoot the damn thing off, only to stop as he heard footsteps from behind the door. He returned the pistol to his belt, and pulled out his lockpicking tools from a pouch, and began to pick the lock. As he listened to the footsteps, he heard an all to familiar voice, Verhen’s.

“Those damn guards should’ve been back by now…..how hard is it to ensure no more explosive material is around my home?” The noble asked himself, as though he was waiting for an answer. As the lock fell from the door, Xyveth kicked it open, flying into the room and pinning Verhen to the floor beneath him, his pistol aimed right between the nobleman’s eyes.

“You! I should’ve known….” Verhen spoke, his eyes widening as he recognized Xyveth.

“I promised ye I would be back….as fer yer guards….let’s just say they’re a bit busy bein’ dead.” The Captain snarled, his blood beginning to boil as his gaze fell on the man that had caused him so much trouble.

“You’ll pay for this, you hear me? The bounty on your head will just end up even bigger, especially when word spreads that I’m dead!” Verhen yelled, only for Xyveth to jab the noble in the gut, making him fall silent.

“Ye runied me life Verhen. Do you know how many attempts I’ve had on me life cause o’ ye? How many people I’ve had to stay away from t’keep them safe?” The Captain asked, anger clearly evident in his voice.

“I can imagine, and I’m just sorry that they weren’t sucessful. You deserve to be dead for what you did to my son.” The nobleman roared, only for Xy to deliver another jab to his gut.

“Yer son is dead, and I wouldn’t want it any other way! He murdered Romath! Yer son was rotten t’ the core, just like his friends were!”

“And what would your father think of the man you are….” Verhen’s voice was overshadowed by the sound of pistol fire. Xy shot one round into the man’s head, another into his chest, and a third into his gut.

“Don’t ye ever try t’speak o’ Romath like ye knew him….” he murmured, shaking his head as he looked at the corpse of Verhen Whiteveil. Finally, the man that had been repsonsible for so much of the Captain’s pain over the years was finally dead. Xyveth rose up to a stand, and returned his pistol to his belt. As he made his way from the room where he left Verhen’s body, the ringing in his ears grew, and he shook his head, trying to keep himself from focusing on the pain in his leg and head. He reached into his belt, and pulled out his hearthstone, only to begin channeling it and vanishing in a vibrant green glow.

As the Captain arrived back aboard the Siren’s Lament, he took a breath of relief. “Well now...it’s good t’be….” he murmured, only to collapse on the deck of his ship.

I remember my young daughter’s tears.

They weren’t tears of sadness or pain. They were tears of defeat and despair. She was being asked to do the impossible thing. She was being asked to clean her room.

Her overwhelm that day was palatable. And her room was an authentic mess. A metaphorical (and very real) disaster area. Not only had she drug out every toy and book she owned, there were piles of clothes and shoes and stuffed animals mixed like a vegetable soup of 5-year-old girl possessions. We have asked her to pick up. Told to pick up. Her failure to do so has come to this. Now, she was so overwhelmed, all she could do was sit in the middle of the mess and cry.

But lest we get too critical of my daughter, let’s recognize we’ve all been in this place. (Side note: My daughter is now 26. While we weren’t perfect in a lot of things, she’s now doing okay.)

Who hasn’t needed to start a project so prodigious we end up on the floor in a puddle of tears? Or watching sitcom reruns on Netflix? (Anyone still mad about the removal of “The Office”?) Or scrolling social media? Or following up a solid rearrangement of the dishwasher with a round of sock sorting? Sometimes it feels like we’re being asked to rebuild Hoover Dam. When we feel that way, the human brain will either deny or deflect. Denial is choosing to ignore what you know you must do. Deflection is when you do something else to feel productive. I am a kitchen cleaner, myself. When a project feels too big to start, I deflect, resulting in a weirdly clean kitchen. The problem here is that most projects are not at Hoover Dam scale. It just feels like it.

If you know this feeling you may, like my daughter that day, be face to face with fortress fallacy.

Fortress fallacy is when we believe we have to build something so perfect, large, and grandiose, we’re paralyzed and cannot start. I could take a beginner drawing course online, but I have to paint a modern-day Sistine Chapel equivalent or nothing. Gosh darn it. You feel the need to write the next Harry Potter series, so a simple journaling habit feels like foolishness and a waste of time. Some of you want to start a project but you’re concerned it will not be Apple, Google, or even Airbnb. This is fortress fallacy, and the imaginary fortress in your head needs to be dismantled. The BAM world is glorious at talking about business as __ (you know the word) — but we’re here for people who actually want to do have a sucessful busines or project. Because of the fortress fallacy, many would be entrepreneurs struggle to start.

It’s a paralyzing trap that throws you on the floor in a puddle of snot and tears. Let’s tear it down the way my daughter did that day.

Start with small wins

Here’s a trick I learned about cleaning a room from watching some of the first seasons of Sesame Street as a small child: Clear the floor by putting everything on the bed. It seems like a small thing — it’s just moving stuff around. But something positive kicks in when you see progress. The floor we couldn’t see a moment ago is now clear. That’s a single, huge, momentum-building win for an overwhelmed 5-year-old girl. We need minor victories, especially at the beginning of a project. We crack the foundation of fortress fallacy with small but noticeable accomplishments.

Take five to brainstorm your business or project idea or research your market. Have a conversation with a friend about customer or particpant needs. Make a list of what needs to be done and put your project into actionable steps. Simply putting things in writing is a brilliant start and a better use of time than a Netflix binge.

Be consistent

I then told my daughter to put away the things on her bed — one item at a time. Choose an item. Think about where it goes. Put it away. Then do it again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Keep going until she finished. It’s liberating to do the same task with the same process over and over to completion (Again — I’m pretty sure I saw this on Sesame Street in 1970).

Consistency pays off. Show up every day and do the work. No, you may not see every desired outcome in a single day. But you will see huge results if you show up every day for a year. For my daughter, it was amazing what she could accomplish in an hour if she was consistent. And she was. And she did it. And so can you.

Follow through to the end

This means finish what you start. My daughter had to push through until finished. Don’t stop. Don’t leave rough edges. Keep going to the bitter end.

Perseverance is a Biblical word long gone out of style. At this stage in my life, I want to be very slow to start new things — and whatever I start, I finish. This means a quick “no” and a slow “yes.” I only have time for 10 projects. It’s not possible to complete 100 projects. This means saying “no” to 90% of the requests coming my way because if the answer is “yes,” I will see that one to completion. Follow through. Finish what you start.

Have Systems and Support

And she did it. The room was eventually cleaned. She just needed a little support and a system. Once the system was in place and she knew she wasn’t alone, she executed on our system for the win. This model holds true for organizations. Leaders often fail to execute because they feel alone and don’t have an operating system. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone flourish when they have systems and support.

That’s how you clean a room. It’s also how you start a new ministry, church, business, or non-profit organization.

Stop talking (and sobbing in the middle of the floor) about it and start doing it.

It’s one thing to think about a grand project. Thinking can feel like doing sometimes. Tear down the fortress by taking your very first baby steps — however small they might feel.

BOOK: THE ART OF STRATEGY - AVINASH DIXIT & BARRY NALEBUFF

WHY?

I read this book in order to learn about game theory, it was a book recommended by Rana from Theta Trading.

It really helped me think about the stock market, changed my thought process on the stock market and in life. It also helped my process how one choice can lead to different situations, and how one move in the stock market whether with the company, or headlines, or what other investors think will lead the stock price in different directions.

What career to follow, how to manage a business, whom to marry, how to bring up children, and whether to run for president are just some examples of such fateful choices. The common element in these situations is that you do not act in vacuum. Instead, you are surrounded by active decision makers whose choices interact with yours. This interaction has an important effect on your thinking and actions

In a single game of rock, paper, scissors, for example it isn't hard to choose moves randomly. But when games get repeated, the approach is trickier. Mixing your plays does not mean rotating your strategies in a predicatable manner. Your opponent can observe and exploit any systematic pattern almost as easily as he can exploit an unchanging repetition of a single strategy. It is unpredictability that is important when mixing

it turns out most people fall into predictable patterns. You can test this yourself online where computer programs are able to find the pattern and beat you. In an effort to mix things up, players often rotate their strategies too much. This leads to the surprise success of the “avalanche” strategy: rock, rock, rock

The importance of randomized strategies was one of the early insights of game theory. The idea is simple and intuitive but needs refinement to be useful in practice. It is not enough for a tennis player to know that he should mix his shots between the opponent's forehand and backhand. He needs some idea of whether he should go to the forehand 30 percent or 64 percent of the time and how the answer depends on the relative strengths of the two sides.

If you happen to be a farmer with soy beans to sell in the future, then the contract can provide a hedge against future price movements. Similarily, if you sell soy milk and hence need to buy soy beans in the future, this contract is insurance, not a gamble.

But the volume of the contracts on the exchange suggests that most people buying and selling are traders, not farmers and manufacturers. For them, the deal is a zero-sum game. When both sides agree to trade, each one thinks it will make money. One of them must be wrong. That's the nature of a zero-sum game. Both sides can't win.

This is a paradox. How can both sides think they can outsmart the other? Someone must be wrong. Why do you think the other person is wrong, not you? Let us assume that you don't have any insider information. If someone is willing to sell you a futures contract, any money you make is money they lose. Why do you think that you are smarter than they are? Remember that their willingness to trade means that they think they are smarter than you.

In game theory you need to understand the other player's perspective. You need to consider what they know, what motivates them, and even how they think about you. When thinking strategically, you have to work extra hard to understand the perspective and interactions of all the other players in the game, including ones who may be silent. That brings us to one last point. You may be thinking you are playing one game, but it is only part of a larger game. There is always a larger game.

A better understanding of people's motives enriches our understanding of economic decision making and strategic interactions alike

We should think about why concerns for altruism and fairness and anger or disgust when someone else violates these precepts, have such a strong hold on people. This takes us into realm the realm of speculation, but one plausible explanation can be found in evolutionary psychology. Groups that instill norms of fairness and altruism into their members will have less internal conflict than groups consisting of purely selfish individuals. Therefore they will be more sucessful in taking collective action, such as provision of goods that benefit the whole group and conservation of common resources, and they will spend less effort and resources in internal conflict. As a result, they will do better, both in absolute terms and in competition with group that do not have similar norms. In other words, some measure of fairness and altruism may have evolutionary survival value.

Being of two minds: Chess strategy illustrates another important practical feature of looking forward and reasoning backward: you have to play the game from the perspective both players. While it is hard to calculate your best move in a complicated tree, it is even harder to predict what the other side will do.

If you really could analyze all possible moves and counter moves and the other player could as well, then the two of you would agree up front as to how the entire game would play out. But once the analysis is limited to looking down only some branches of the tree, the other player may see something you didn't miss or something you've seen. Either way the other side may then make a move you didn't anticipate

To really look forward and reason backward, you have to predict what the other players will actually do, not what you would have done in their shoes. The problem is that when you try to put yourself in the other players' shoes, it is hard if not impossible to leave your own shoes behind. You know too much about what you are planning to do in your next move and it is hard to erase that knowledge when you are looking at the game from the other player's perspective. Indeed, that explains why people don't play chess (or poker) against themselves. You certainly can't bluff against yourself or make a surprise attack.

There is no perfect solution to this problem. When you try to put yourself in the other players' shoes, you have to know what they know and not know what they don't know. Your objectives have to be their objectives, not what you wish they had as an objective. In practice, firms trying to simulate the moves and counter-moves of a potential business scenario will hire outsiders to play the role of the other players. That way, they can ensure that their game partners don't know too much. Often the biggest learning comes from seeing the moves that were not anticipated and then understanding what let to that outcome, so that it can be either avoided or promoted

Thomas Schelling invented the way of representing bother players' payoffs in the same table while making clear which payoff belongs to which player. With excessive modesty, he writes “If I am ever asked whether I ever made a contribution to game theory I shall answer yes... the invention of staggered payoffs in a matrix” Actually Schelling develped many of the most important concepts of game theory – focal points, credibility, commitment, threats and promises, tipping and much more. Generally higher payoff numbers are better for each player. Sometimes, as with prisoners under interrogation, the payoff numbers are years in jail, so each player prefers a smaller number for himself. The same can happen if the payoff numbers are ranking where 1 is best. When looking at a game table, you should check the interpretation of the payoff numbers for that game.

Tit for tat: The problem with tit for tat is that any mistake “echoes” back and forth. One side punishes the other for a defection, and this sets off a chain reaction. The rival responds to the punishment by hitting back. This response calls for a second punishment without hitting back. Such cycles or reprisals are often observed in real-life feuds between Israelis and Arabs in the Middle East, or Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, or Hindus and Muslims in India. What tit for tat lacks is a way of saying “Enough is enough” It is too provocable and not forgiving enough

The Galapagos Islands are the home of Darwin's finches. When the cactus flower withers, the main source of food disappears for the cactus finch. You can predict the end result of this strategy: no nectar, no pollen, no seeds, no fruit, and then no more cactus finch. Does that mean that evolution has led the finches into a prisoners' dilemma where the eventual outcome is extinction?

Not quite on two counts. Finches are territorial and so the finches (and their offspring) whose local cactus shut down may end up as losers. Killing next year's neighbourhood food supply is not worth today's extra sip of pollen. Therefore these deviant finches would not appear to have a fitness advantage over the others. But the conclusion changes if this strategy ever becomes pervasive. The deviant finches will expand their search for food and even those finches that wait will not save their cactus's stigma. Given the famine that is sure to follow, the birds most likely to survive are those who started in the strongest position. The extra sip of nectar could make the difference.

What we have here is a cancerous adaptation. If it stays small, it can die out. But if it ever grows too large, it will become the fittest strategy on a sinking ship. Once it ever becomes advantageous even on a relative scale, the only way to get rid of it is to eliminate the entire population and start again. With no finches left on the Daphne Major, there will be no one left to snip the stigmas and the cacti will bloom again. When two lucky finches alight on this island, they will have an opportunity to start the process from scratch

Many mathematical game theorists dislike the dependence of an outcome on historical, cultural or linguistic aspects of the game or on purely arbitrary devices like round numbers; they would prefer the solution be determined purely by the abstract mathematical facts about the game – the number of players, the strategies available to each, and the payoffs to each in relation to the strategy choices of all. We disagree. We think it entirely appropriate that the outcome of a game played by humans interacting in a society should depend on the social and psychological aspects of the game.

The Nash Equilibrium is a decision-making theorem within game theory that states a player can achieve the desired outcome by not deviating from their initial strategy. Each player's strategy is optimal when considering the decisions of other players. Every player wins because everyone get the outcome they desire. The prisoner's dilemma is a common game theory example and one that adequately showcases the effct of the Nash Equilibrium

A Nash equilibrium is a configuration of strategies where each player's choice is his best response to the other player's choice (or the other players' choices when therea re more thatn two players in the game) If some outcome is not a Nash equilibrium, at least one player must be choosing an action that is not his best response. Such a player has a clear incentive to deviate from that action, which would destroy the proposed solution.

A game is a situation of strategic interdependence: the outcome of your choices (strategies) depends upon the choices of one or more other persons acting purposely. The decision makers involved in a game are called players, and their choices are called moves. The interests of the players in a game may be in strict conflict: one person's gain is always another's loss. Such games are called zero-sum. More typically, there are zones of commonality of interests as well as of conflict and so, there can be combinations of mutually gainful or mutually harful strategies. Nevertheless, we usually refer to the other players in a game as one’s rivals.

The moves in a game may be sequential or simultaneous. In a game of sequential moves, there is a linear chain of thinking: If I do this, my rival can do that, and in turn I can respond in the following way. Such a game is studied by drawing a game tree. The best choices of moves can be found by applying rules.

Rule 1: Look forward and reason backward

Rule 2: If you have a dominant strategy, use it

Rule 3: Eliminate dominated strategies from consideration

Rule 4: Look for an equilibrium, a pair of strategies in which each player's action in the best response to other's

We classify the actions that can enhance the credibility of your unconditional and conditional strategic moves and that can help you practice brinkmanship in eith categories, which are based on three broad principles. We will state them first and then illustrate each

1) Write contracts to back up your resolve

2) Establish and use a reputation

3) Cut off communication

4) Burn bridges behind you

5) Leave the outcome beyond your control, or even to chance

6) Move in small steps

7) Develop credibility through teamwork

8) Employ mandated agents

The size of the U.S. College textbook market is $7 billion. Let's take a stepback and look at the world from the publisher's perspective. If a typical textbook will be resold twice on the used market, then the publisher gets to make only one sale rather than three. If they were looking to make $30 profit per student, now they have to make $90 on the first sale to come out even. This is what leads publishers to raise the list price of the text all the way up to $150, which allows them to get their $90 profit up front. And once the books are sold they have every incentive to eliminate competition from the stock of used textbooks by coming out with a new edition as quickly as they can.

The first dentist in an area can be extremely valuable and maintain a large practice. But with too many dentists around, there is the potential for congestion and price competition. Blog post - Week 12 - 4/9 Shared Purpose

Geometry in Construction

I absolutely LOVE this story! A math teacher and industrial technology teacher came up with this idea and it seems to be highly sucessful! “To Burke, the program really is about providing a valuable experience to students and a service to the community.” The students really seem to want to connect their learning! “The students conducted a survey of some members of the Loveland community, asking if they are interested in helping the homeless and trying to determine where that desire to help ends.”

For several years, I commuted through the Glenside train station. It’s really great to see a positive change in the community lead by Arcadians. The project does need more funding in order to achieve the goal of including LED lighting which looks REALLY COOL! I will be donating to this project and would encourage others to do the same.

The College March

The students of Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School in New York City marched to the post office together to mail their college applications. The streets are closed and the student body as well as the community outside the school are there to show their support for the seniors in their quest to go to college.

Purpose is good. Shared purpose is better.

This article was written for a business audience, but the concepts can certainly be applied to the classroom if you substitute students for customers. The main idea is that having a shared purpose is more important than simply having a purpose. “Most leaders think of purpose as a purpose for. But what is needed is a purpose with.�� When the purpose is shared, the engagement is stronger.

When students and teachers can work together towards a shared purpose, the sum of their work is greater than the parts.

I really like this quote as a reminder that small changes can sum to a large impact. This helps me to not feel overwhelmed by trying to take on too much at one time.

born on april 19 1997, the younger twin ( and better looking twin ) of kyungjae, the youngest in her family as a whole as well as the only girl ! she’s twenty years old, and a trainee under wonder records.

she is the leader, lead dancer & lead vocalist of nyx, where she was once the maknae back in late 2013 - early 2014 before they fell apart ... before they even debuted ...

she blamed polaris for what happened, but after three years she let go of her vendetta against them ...

before becoming a trainee, she was a gymnast ! she had taken piano lessons, tennis, etc. etc. growing up but she stuck to gymnastics full-time once she turned ten years old !

she only became a gymnast because ...

her family is rich, and made up of sucessful people and kyungjae, and she felt like she couldn’t outdo them in any field because her older brothers had done everything before her. they literally set the bar too high for her short ass to reach.

( she reached their accomplishments, but her parents had seen it all before so they weren’t throwing around praise and compliments like she wants ... )

what was something her brothers didn’t get into? athletics. gymnastics.

she is going to become a star gymnast in a matter of years !

and she does. she won trophies and medals and went overseas for junior competitions !

she was on her way to hopefully becoming an olympic athlete !

however, life decides to take an unexpected turn and she’s casted after one of her local competitions by a wonder records scout. gave her a card and all, told her to call.

surprisingly ... she did call back.

her parents were confused because ... she’s ditching gymnastics, something she knows she’s good in, to train to be an idol? why?

well ... again, she wanted to do something her brothers didn’t, and be successful in that.

training came somewhat easy, as she’s trained her body harder to be a gymnast, and following a routine was something she’s done a lot. a year into her training, the company told her she would debut as the final member of nyx 1.0 ...

well, you know how that story plays out.

around the same time as the fallout of nyx 1.0, she went home, for the first in what felt like years — she began living in the nyx 1.0 dorm in 2013, and before she always spent the majority of her time training in gymnastics, to find out that kyungjae had decided to leave home? without a goodbye?

as a twin, it literally broke her heart. she didn’t know where to find him, so it really felt like half of her was gone !

the truth is ... their parents are evil, and made him leave. made him sign some contract since disownment is frowned upon. ( how classy. )

their parents manipulated the situation a lot, taking advantage of the fact that they were separated. they told him that she wanted him to leave just like they did, and they told her that he left on his own accord.

she goes back to gymnastics to relieve stress, even if she can’t compete. she doesn’t really know why she continued resigning with wonder records.

she officially quits it altogether after turning eighteen. she had a epiphany and realized how unnecessary it was to keep up with it as it only put her body into more pain.

she does a lot of yoga and aerial yoga to keep her flexibility.

three years later, kyuri knows where kyungjae is and now she’s the leader of nyx 2.0. she’s scared to approach him so ... lmfao she won’t.

LITTLE BIT OF HER PERSONALITY !

she has a hard time expressing her emotions and in turn ... it makes her seem like an ice princess. too honest and a bit tactless.

she is just bad with emotions ! as she was growing up, she was so used to being too busy to deal with other people and grew up alone so ... she’s a little lost sometimes.

she’s nice to adults. she puts on her ‘perfect girl’ face in front of adults because her parents always told her to respect people in power.

rumor has it, if you look her in the eyes, you have nightmares for the next three whole months.

just kidding.

she’s not unfriendly though ! she may be a bit mean, but she’s not unfriendly. if you can handle a lot of dark humor and the type of friendship where you’re always teasing/making fun of one another, i think you’ll get along with her great !

she can be soft ... but it’s not seen often. i think the only people she’s comfortable around are the few close friends she has and her members. she is as genuine as she can be with them.

she’s really good at hiding her emotions. she usually has a resting bitch face, but she means no harm ... unless she does ( but that’s an entirely different story ).

i hope you don’t mind being hit sometimes because ... being aggressive is how she’s affectionate? ( she doesn’t hit hard ... unless you’re a guy ... or joon. )

she’s still capable of receiving/giving hugs ! but don’t initiate it in the wrong setting because she’ll probably hit you right after.

deep down, she worries if she’ll be a good enough leader for nyx, mostly because she’s so used to being independent so taking care of a group of six other girls is a little much for her? she understands why they gave the position to her, but sometimes she can’t help but feel inadequate.

not that most, or anyone for that matter, would know.

and low & behold, your girl here is a little awkward and flustered easily ! she doesn’t know how to handle situations sometimes, but if you’re close in age she’ll hide this through lowkey affectionate aggression. but if you’re slightly older and have her feeling this way she feels very small. even if she doesn’t show it, she’d be annoyed about this lmao.

she’s a bit of a labyrinth as a person, but if you’re willing to find out how to get her to soften up i promise it’s worth it !!

unknown sunbae / you’re an idol but kyuri doesn’t have much knowledge on idols unless you’re signed to wonder records or you’re an ex-member of boy group phoenix. she treats you like she would a normal person. who knows what will happen?

favorite - probably for wonder artists only / doesn’t know what a bias is but you’re her favorite member of whatever group you’re in. loves you. wouldn’t die for you, or really do anything for you ( she’s your fan, not your maid ) but she just ... admires you. wants to learn a lot from you !

salt friends / you guys always have something to bitch about and ... you bitch about it together !

she’s soft for you / how you got under her skin, she’ll never know. you can be older than her but she wants to protect you so much.
