Thoughts on Fashion & Style from Harvey's Instagram Live with Samantha Rei Crossland
Last night, Harvey Guillén joined fashion designer Samantha Rei Crossland for a chat on Instagram Live to talk about life, style, the entertainment industry, and to answer some fan questions! The full video may be available via Harvey or Samantha's IG eventually, as they saved it at the end, but in the meantime I've compiled some of the questions and answers related to Harvey's relationship with fashion and style here!
This text is taken from the video and has been lightly edited for clarity.
Samantha: Dollie says, "as a fan you can really tell Harvey worked deliberately through fashion and photoshoots to establish his style in person, in front of the camera, and on the red carpet. I'd love to hear more about that journey and additionally if you have any tips for achieving confidence in style and fashion."
Harvey: Wow, good question! I feel like that was an avenue that never was presented to me as an option for the first part of my career. You know everyone's like "oh who dressed you?" I dressed myself! I mean I still do, but I didn't really get any kind of help with anything stylish-wise until recently, when I got the opportunity to work with different designers and stylists who introduced me to those designers. That's really what it is: a stylist will get you into an atelier or someone's house, like Christian Siriano or someone like that. But for the most part, for a long time I just kind of dressed myself, and on a budget.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knowing Harvey was putting these kinds looks together by himself on a budget in 2017 and 2018, I will never again cut any of the Chrises with their MCU money a single centimeter of slack for showing up year after year, to event after event, in bland black or navy suits.
Harvey (continued): Because stylists are worth every penny, but they're expensive! They are expensive because they do a great job, but you also have to be constantly doing that. I think Zendaya was just talking about this in an interview. There's moments where you want a stylist because you want to look your best and you want the best opportunity and possibility, and there's moments where you're like "I'll dress myself, it's just a small event, I'll make it work. I'll make it work with what I have."
But yeah, I really wanted to put myself in a position where...why can't I like fashion? Why can't I do a photoshoot, and why can't I do a cover? I had a publicist, one of my first publicists...I said "I want to be the first to do something, like be on a cover of something like this!" And they straight out loud said "that's not going to happen." And I was like..."oh well, I mean maybe not overnight, but that should be the goal, we should work toward--"
And they were like "yeah, but we want to be realistic...and that's not gonna happen."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cannot imagine being the person to tell THIS man he's never going to be on the cover of a magazine.
Harvey (continued): I realized, if people on your team are naysayers or they're not seeing the vision, those people aren't on your team. So unfortunately, I had to let them go, because if there's someone on your team who's already being toxic towards your vision, that's not the vision, that's not the vibe, that's not it. And so I'm glad to report that shortly after that we did get a cover! And then I was able to kind of show that off and be like, "it can be done!" You just have to find the right team and the right people who see your vision.
I think for so long it's just been easy to say no to people who don't fit the mold of Hollywood, and I'm not here to fit a mold. I'm here to break it.
Samantha: You're killin' it! You have no idea how many of these questions were just "when is he starting a fashion line?"
Harvey: I want to! I think right now I'm so focused on my main passion, which is acting, and I'm so grateful and blessed to have opportunities that are coming my way and that I am excited for. And now wrapping something that I'm gonna hold so dear to my heart like Shadows for so long, I'm so grateful. And you know, most actors would kill for just the opportunity to be on a show like Shadows and call it a day, and I would be happy if that's the work that I'm known for, because it's such a great show.
But I'm fortunate that I have all of these other things that are coming up. I'm so excited for the opportunities, and I'm excited for the different characters and different roles and different hats I get to put on.
But eventually that would definitely be an avenue that...I mean, it would definitely be on brand! You know? It would be so on brand to open a plus size line, especially because growing up I didn't see as many options for plus size people, period. But if there were, obviously the lean is for female clothing, and it was never for men at all. Like the options for a plus sized guy was like...screen t-shirts and jeans. And that's it!
Or it was always Big and Tall, where if you weren't tall you got stuck with a really short and stout kind of shirt. The measurements were always catered to "if you're big, you gotta be tall," and well, I don't know if that's true, but there was no in between. So that's a market that I would definitely want to look at. But for the time being I'm focusing on the acting part of it.
Samantha: Kelly wants to ask, "do you like any specific colors or patterns? Where are your tastes when you dress high fashion?"
Harvey: I used to be afraid of color a lot because I was always told if you're plus sized or bigger you'll amplify yourself. But I think you shouldn't be afraid of color. Last year, a year ago next month, at the Meta Gala I wore pink! That was all Christian Siriano from head to toe, and there was a wink there and a story behind it--if you know you know--why he and I chose the color pink for the Met Gala and who they were honoring and all of that. So I'm not afraid of color. I try to be very specific about the dimensions and where my leg cuts off or where it elongates my leg.
Tumblr media
Harvey's now-iconic outfit from the 2023 Met Gala--whose theme was honoring Karl Lagerfeld--blended foundational style elements of Lagerfeld's most famous designs for Chanel with all the things Lagerfeld loudly hated throughout his life. Lagerfeld was infamous for making shitty comments about plus sized people, people of color, short men, and a host of other things. He also disliked the color pink. So Harvey showing up as himself and looking stunning wearing that glorious pink number was possibly the classiest shade ever thrown.
Harvey (continued): I've just been like the Christian Siriano poster boy this year! Which is a funny story because when I first approached him over a year ago for the Oscars, he was really busy and he said "I really don't make menswear."
And I was like "well I'm not saying I want you to make completely a tuxedo, I want you to do something in the middle." And he was like "well, I kind of did that with Billy Porter" where he put Billy in this really amazing gown. And I was like "well I don't want to do a gown, I want something between that, you know? Like where it doesn't have to be a traditional, boring, just plain old tuxedo, and it doesn't have to be this amazing, beautiful ball gown that Billy had worn."
Because he doesn't really design for men, he designs for women. And he said "this would be the first I would do this." And I said "then that's great! It'll be the first!" And he definitely had never designed for a plus sized man, so we were checking all these boxes off.
So my idea was if someone in 1920 went to an award show but was trying to wear a vintage Victorian or Edwardian outfit to honor a vintage look. So the hair was 1920s. The hair was done by Connie, who was my hair person in What We Do In the Shadows, who helped me originate the original look for Guillermo.
And Romie--who's my best friend since third grade--is my makeup artist, and she did my makeup for the Oscars and makeup for a lot of the events I go to.
And it was just amazing, you know. That outfit...oh my god. Vogue ran it, they got so many likes, it was on every social [media] outlet, and it did so well that last fall, for the first time, [Christian] had a men's line. And I can't help but wonder if it was a coincidence, if it had anything to do with my "how about we try this experiment!"
Tumblr media
This beautiful vintage-inspired look for the Oscars was Harvey's first red carpet collaboration with Christian Siriano and landed him on nearly every best dressed list for the event. The metallic brocade tuxedo gown and bell hem trouser were included in Siriano's Fall 2023 line, and are available to order on his website (for a hefty price) as separate pieces in sizes up to a size 30 (58 bust, 60 waist).
Harvey (continued): Christian's been great, and of course he would make amazing pieces for menswear, of course he would!
We collaborated on a lot of things. For the Critic's Choice award we did a really cool cut, which was like a midriff cut with a peek-a-boo of belly. Because you know, I like my body, and I can show it off! And he did it in a way where I was like "woah!" It elongated my leg and it had a peek-a-boo of a little bit of tummy, and it had a neckline that plunges. So it shows your chest, and it's mesh, and then this giant bow on the side that you can take off or put on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This red carpet look Harvey wore for the Critic's Choice Awards is one of my personal favorites. It feels like plus size people are always being urged to both cover up as much as possible and make ourselves as small as possible. But this outfit stares those demands in the face and says "Why though? Fuck that! Show yourself off and take up space!"
Harvey (continued): It got so many compliments on the carpet! And it's to a T a Christian look, but also very much me, because we collaborated in what that would look like and how I want that on my body, how it looks on my body, because what looks good on me may not look good on someone else. But it's knowing what your best assets are and what you're showing off, and what you want to show off. Because that's what's going to make you feel the most comfortable, when you're showing off something that you love about yourself.
Samantha: That's literally what I tell my clients! You feel the best you've ever looked in your life when everything just fits you perfectly and shows off the best parts of your body that you like the most. It's not about hiding, it's about amplifying.
Harvey: Yeah, exactly.
---
Thank you so much to both Samantha and Harvey for this wonderful conversation on IG Live! It was truly a joy to witness it and get more insight into Harvey's thoughts on fashion and style.

Spotlight on Markus Anderson + SOHO House
Hi Skippy & Friends-Pilgrim here thinking it is ABOUT TIME an intense spotlight unearths the truth of what has been going on at SOHO Houses since their beginning in London. We do know their specially designed wallpaper that looked like flowers was really private body parts up close. We have read and deducted that Markle basically lived in them, having her own place to store luggage in London. Didn’t JH describe in Spare being taken thru secret hallways to get to her door? Together Markus & Markle, who act like friends with hot benefits in photos, enjoy playing gaslighting games together. It seems he can go either way as it has been written he had a fling with Edward Enniful-who did the disastrous Vogue issue with Markle and is just now retiring as the editor-in-chief of British Vogue. As for her, well, she sends wedding rings back in manila envelopes saying it’s over while having been living with the new guy and is in the process of moving onto the next victim. She changes religion with a snap of her fingers. Don’t forget all those foreign business trips to famous playgrounds on yachts in-between, proudly photographed and presented on her Tig site as if she was on her own dime- sure Jan. 6 degrees of separation with this group is more like 2.
We do know that Markus Anderson was born in Ontario, not far from a private school a 17-year-old Randy Andy attended for one semester. (Hmmmmm-dare I wonder about the older, half-brother/cousin possibility?) Anderson started impressing the bosses at Toronto’s SOHO House and is now their global membership director helping drive the company’s international expansion. He was/is? the guy rich patrons called looking for easy, classy, hook-ups. From the U.S. Sun, “He started working for the company as a waiter but quickly moved up through the ranks, turning his hand to practically every position at the company on his way up the ladder. The stylish chap is the right-hand man to company CEO Nick Jones and personally crafts the guest lists to some of the biggest celebrity parties - including an annual Oscars bash. He was named one of Toronto Life’s 50 Most Influential in 2014.”
We do know he and Markle have been in cahoots for years, (she went to Toronto for Suits in 2011) travelling together often. I have so many questions about this man it’s not funny. He was photographed at the Montecito polo fields babysitting a weird acting Markle, seemingly calming down tempers after a huge fight. He was THE one ushering Markle closer to Prince Harry, be it polo matches in the UK, parties with international magnates or the 2017 Invictus Games. He was one of 4 who was in the IG’s suite waiting for the prince to come up and say a formal GOODBYE to Meghan but instead, was met by Doria who told PH what was reeeallly going to happen. He was the one who gladly showed up at her half million-dollar, bogus baby shower in Manhattan to take her out to dinner. She told the paps what door to be at and they were photographed as she walked out NOT wearing the huge baby bump she sported when she arrived! He is the one who babysat her now orphaned dogs staying behind in Canada. He was around so much many said he was living with them starting on Vancouver Island. I even think Archie looks just like HIM! I’m referring to the child shown off with Rev. Tutu and reading the Duck/Rabbit book. This whole dang thing stinks to high heaven.
Yes, shine a big spotlight on this man and company. If short sellers discover there is not enough to sure up the value of their stocks…well then SELL!!!
Thank you Pilgrim!  Great post!!!!❤️

Princess Jellyfish (Kuragehime) - Anime Review
Tumblr media
originally posted on www.onlyfunthings.org on April 27, 2017
Ciao lovelies! Today, I’m reviewing a somewhat older anime that came from a serial comic in in the Kodansha manga magazine Kiss- Princess Jellyfish! (Kuragehime). This anime really touched my heart and shaped a lot of my early teen years, so I figured I should review it!
In this review, I’ll be going over storyline, characters, and of course, fashions. I will include some little tidbits in an “other” category as well. Warning! Some spoilers ahead!
Storyline
The storyline of this anime centers around a girl named Tsukimi. She is a otaku who loves jellyfish, and lives in a retro building called Amamizukan with her friends Chieko, Mayaya, Banba, Jiji, and the elusive Miss Mejiro. Each member of the “nuns” or “Amars” as they call themselves, has a special interest- Chieko loves traditional Japanese Dolls and Kimono and Yukata, Mayaya likes a show called “Records of the Three Kingdoms,” Banba’s special interest is trains and food, and Jiji likes old men. Tsukimi is an awkward girl who hates social interaction, like the rest of her peers. They only socialize with each other unless it’s an emergency.
One day, while visiting a spotted jellyfish in a pet shop, Tsukimi notices that the shop owner put a moon jellyfish with the spotted jellyfish, which will kill the spotted jellyfish, who Tsukimi has named Clara. She tries talking to the stylish man who is cashiering, but he’s freaked out by her otaku rant and shoves her. A beautiful woman intervenes and manages to get Tsukimi the jellyfish and helps her bring it home, then falls asleep on her floor.
Tsukimi is nervous about this woman when she wakes up. She’s admiring the wig worn by the woman when she notices the woman is awake and…not a woman. Surprise! Cue the freakout as Tsukimi realizes shes accidentally snuck a man into the “nunnery.”
From there, she and the man (named Kuranosuke Koibuchi) become a strange kind of friends, and Kuranosuke manages to gain tolerance from the others in the “nunnery” (though they don’t know he’s a boy.)
Tumblr media
The main conflict of the story is revealed as we see that the building they all live happily in is going to be torn down. They begin to work to save their building, with Kuranosuke’s help, and they learn that beauty can be a weapon.
This storyline was really sweet and genuine and really stuck with me. I loved how it could be comedic at times, yet sweet at other times. Not to mention I totally want Kuranosuke and Tsukimi to be together. It’s so cute.
Storyline overall is 5/5 for me. I didn’t reveal every detail here, so you’ll have to watch the anime to find out more!
Tumblr media
Characters
God, I love these characters. Each character has their own special interest, which I love, because I have many myself, and can connect to these characters. The characters are lovable without being perfect, which makes them very relatable and dimensional. Even the beautiful Kuranosuke isn’t perfect, shown to be bratty and spoiled and not too kind, and we see his amazing character development without him losing all his flaws.
Tumblr media
Even the “minor” characters are well fleshed out and easy to relate to. Characters like Inari who are only really there for conflict still have complex feelings and motivations, enough to make them fully dimensional and believable.
Each character is likeable in their own way really. For characters, even though I love them, I’m still giving this anime a 4/5 because they do still have a few characters who only exist for a running gag, like the Prime Minister and ex prime minister.
Tumblr media
Fashions
For a show very centered on fashion and beauty being weapons and armor, Princess Jellyfish contains interesting and cute fashions, many of which I would even wear. While most of the best fashions are reserved for our golden boy Kuranosuke, when the Amars get makeovers, they look pretty dang amazing too. I’ve made a collage of all my favorite looks from the show below:
Tumblr media
The hairstyles in this anime are also incredible. Most anime has the character have only one hairstyle the entire time, but this anime has huge variations and styles! I made a collage of the best hairstyles below:
Tumblr media
Overall for fashion, 5/5. Well done, creators of Kuragehime, you’ve got me wanting to look like a perfect Tokyo street snap every day of my life.
Tumblr media
OTHERS
-This anime cuts off rather abruptly and leaves a lot of loose ends, but you can read more in the manga.
-This anime focuses on some heavy topics like the death of a parent and social anxiety.
-The music in this anime is spot on and very emotionally appropriate.
Tumblr media
OVERALL
I love this anime so much. This anime shaped my early teen years and high school, and Kuranosuke was my biggest inspiration to experiment with fashion, which was the biggest thing that brought me out of my shell of social anxiety. This anime to this day has a piece of my heart. 5/5!
Tumblr media
I will leave you with some inspiring words from our golden boy Kuranosuke:
youtube
(Skip to 1:52 for the speech)
Thank you so much for reading! Do you like this anime?

Movies I watched this Week #97
I don’t know why I waited so long before seeing the British gangster film Sexy Beast, Jonathan Glazer’s first feature. I liked both his ‘Birth’ and ‘Under the skin’, and he only made 3 films. Stylish anti-hero with Gandhi plays a psychopath. 7/10.
🍿
2 by Arthur Penn:
🍿 “… Where were you when Kennedy was shot?...
Which Kennedy?…”
Night moves (1975), the dark Arthur Penn new-noir about weary investigator Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) looking for the missing 16-year-old love-sick Melanie Griffith, who sleeps around and strips naked wherever she goes. (Photo Above). Evocative re-watch. 8/10.
🍿 And so I tried his last theatrical film, the black comedy Penn & Teller Get Killed. It was universally panned by critics, and it gets 3 ‘Ouchies’ from me too. So-Bad-I-Couldn’t-Finish-it candidate, I barely lasted 11 minutes.
🍿
Ebert wrote about Floating weeds: “Sooner or later, everyone who loves movies comes to Ozu. He is the quietest and gentlest of directors, the most humanistic, the most serene.” My 3rd by the Japanese master, a seemingly simple and delicate story of a flailing troupe of traveling Kabuki players who visit a small seaside village. More Ozu please! 8/10.
🍿
3 kites:
🍿 So I finally read Khaled Hosseini‘s bestseller The Kite Runner, about two Afghan best friends who fly kites in Kabul, and the life-long guilt and suffering feelings of one of them over his betrayal of the other. Stories about Afghanistan are hard to appeal to westerners. It’s an unforgiving culture, with absolute and foreign values. The story ends just before 9/11, so at least it does not get involved with the misguided politics of the last 20 years, which helped assure that the Afghani people will never be able to recover or heal.
🍿 Was the 2006 film adaptation of The Kite Runner the first Hollywood-style Afghani melodrama offered to Western audiences (besides fairy tale adventures like ‘The man who would be king’)? It did star Afghani actors, and played in an Afghani-looking locales, but the actors were decidedly un-charismatic, and the locations were sanitized-clean and studio-set-looking. It was a ‘fancier’ tale of friendship, family, and love on the background of real politics. The Oscar-baiting “exotic” class divide between the two characters was sharper than the book, and some of the literary themes were transferred to the screen. However, it didn’t do it for me.
🍿 Higher than a kite, my second (disappointing) Three Stooges spoof, as 1943 Nazi-fighters. An 18 minutes short that left me cold.
🍿
La Cabina (The Phone Box) A nightmarish little Spanish film from 1972, about a man who inexplicably gets trapped in a phone booth.
🍿
Young Jean-Louis Trintignant X 2:
🍿 Il Sorpasso (1962), my first, I think, by Italian Dino Risi. Young student Trintignant is seduced by a charismatic free-wheeling Vittorio Gassman to embark on an exciting road trip in a convertible Lancia. Fun and multi-layered until the shocking and sudden ending. 8/10.
🍿 I haven’t seen Claude Lelouch’s romantic A man and a woman since its original opening. I forgot how lovely and simple it was. They made 2 sequels to it, 20 years later, and another 20 years after that, which I have no desire seeing.
🍿
Red, a 2017 short art film with Cate Blanchett as a redback spider who orgasms then eats her mate. Next year's Halloween costume inspiration.
🍿
I wanted to go through the ‘Top 100 musicals of all time’ that I haven’t seen yet:
🍿 "Hello, gorgeous"... Unfortunately, the first random film I picked was Barbara Straisand’s debut film, Funny girl. The “not-pretty” Jewish girl is also not funny, the musical numbers were mediocre, and the story was dated even in 1968. 2/10.
On the other hand, here’s 19-year-old Barbra Streisand's first TV appearance on April 5, 1961 on Jack Paar's Tonight Show.
🍿 An American in Paris had better score by George Gershwin, and some tap dance numbers by Gene Kelly, but the love story and the touristy “French” plot of the story were trite. It ended though with a beautiful 17-minute dance routine that was worth the price of admission.
🍿
Putin’s Palace is a 2.5 hour long documentary film, made and narrated by opposition leader Alexei Navalny. It’s a bold (and boring but probably true) analysis of the financial corruptions that funded Putin’s ownership of the $1.35 billion black sea complex.
🍿
First watch: Frank Oz’s comedy Bowfinger. For some reason I always thought it was the name of the nerdy Eddie Murphy, “Jiff”. But no, it was the bullshit director Steve Martin in this movie-about-movie-making. With young Heather Graham as a ditsy blond, and John Cho in a cameo as “a man in a club” [It’s funny how all his roles until ‘Harold and Kumar’ were billed as “MILF guy # 2″ and “Aide # 3″, or “Joey”, Etc.] 2/10.
🍿

Marta Del Rio Lends Her Avant-Garde Eye to KitchenAid Marta Del Rio has been styling and crafting some of the most memorable looks for artists and pop culture icons for years, from Lady Gaga to Billie Eilish and Paris Hilton. But she’s also lent her creative chops to consumer brands like Apple, Estee Lauder and Fendi, making her a fitting partner for new territory like kitchen appliances. This week, Del Rio is unveiling a stylish new project that’s been in the works with KitchenAid, the brand known for equipping kitchen lovers with all kinds of essentials. In partnership with Whirlpool’s in-house agency, WoW Studios, together they designed a capsule collection of seven one-of-a-kind designs inspired by KitchenAid’s most iconic products: the Artisan Stand Mixer and K400 Blender. Both products are being released in a new Hibiscus shade, which KitchenAid has named its 2023 Color of the Year. (Past KitchenAid Colors of the Year have included Beetroot and Honey.) Hibiscus, a vivid fuschia shade with a matte finish, was chosen for its nod to the Hibiscus flower and the global resurgence of maximalism."We’ve been tracking the evolution of the color pink since 2017," said Brittni Pertijs, lead color, material & finish designer of KitchenAid. “Beginning with Millennial Pink and advancing to deeper hues as of late, pink is bringing boldness to life in its color and energy. We took that as the spark to create Hibiscus. Hibiscus is a color that draws us to something exciting.” Del Rio’s collection, which will be presented on the eve of New York Fashion Week on February 9, features sculptural, strong and avant-garde (her signature) silhouettes and is rendered entirely in that Hibiscus colorway. It merges industrial and organic references with the distinct lines and curves of KitchenAid appliances.“KitchenAid is a brand with an instantly recognizable design language, which made celebrating the new Hibiscus color a natural fit,” said Del Rio. She also invited a group of New York’s emerging fashion vanguard to each create a full look inspired by Hibiscus as well as KitchenAid’s design language. The guest designers include Jackson Wiederhoeft, Tara Babylon, Tia Adeola, Bach Mai and Man Made Skins.“It was a pleasure to be able to invite five New York-based fashion labels to expand this core collection,” Del Rio adds. “Each of their custom editions for this project showcases their design hallmarks and celebrates the KitchenAid Color of the Year, Hibiscus.”STAND MIXER: ®/™ ©2023 KitchenAid. Not so long ago, Tom Hiddleston was a relative unknown on American shores and now he's one of the most in-demand actors and, happily for us, one of the best-dressed guys on the planet. In fact, he's your Most Stylish Man of 2017. His secret weapon is damn good tailoring that ensures the Brit cuts a mean silhouette the moment he steps on a red carpet. He's the king of the roped-shoulder suit, so much so that Gucci called him up to be the face of their tailoring lineup (see above). If that's not a vote of sartorial confidence, we don't know what his. His approach to getting dressed—and looked damn well put together every place he goes—is proof that putting in a little effort (and having a great tailor) goes a long way when it comes to getting dressed.
Tumblr media
Check, Mate
At the Thor: Ragnarokpremiere, Hiddleston slips into an check Gucci number that's over-the-top in all the right ways.
Tumblr media
Dot, Dot, Dot
Pin dot jacket + polka dot tie + pin dot trousers = the best kind of sartorial swerve
Tumblr media
Double Down
Hiddleston slipped into a similar all-over dot pattern suit for the Kong: Skull Island premiere, only this time he paired it with the best blue dress shirt and a critter-patterned tie
Tumblr media
This Is Not Millennial Pink
But it is the right pink color that upgrades every suit you own
Tumblr media
No Tie, No Problem
When your suit fits as well as Hiddleston's—as well as ALL of his suits do—your underpinning game can go from uber professional to off-duty and you'll still be the best-dressed guy in any room
Tumblr media
The Three-Piece, Perfected
It takes a man who knows what he's doing to wear a three-piece suit. It takes a master of the sartorial arts to know how to wear a pinstripe version of that suit.
Tumblr media
Balancing Act
Hiddleston's beefed-up windowpane pattern suit packs a big graphic punch so the actor wisely softens things up with a rich blue dress shirt.
Tumblr media
Anything But Basic
That's what we'd call Hiddleston's style M.O. The actor's come in a spectrum of uncommon colors, from silver-y grays to bold blues, that just work
Tumblr media
See What We Mean?
On a less sartorially-inclined gent, a deep red DB suit might come on too strong. On Hiddleston, the same tailoring move just comes across as effortless.
Tumblr media
A Plum Assigment
Hiddleston's the type of fearless suited man who an pull off swervy hues like this—and still look like he could run a Fortune 500 operation
Tumblr media
No Pane No Gain
The surefire way to make your suit stand out in a crowd? Pick a graphic windowpane pattern that's guaranteed to get you noticed
Tumblr media
Blur the Lines
A pinstripe suit is most associated with big-time bankers but Hiddleston's take on the classic look (Brunello Cucinelli, in case you're wondering) has more in common with the things those guys do after the closing bell

GQ magazine names Tom Hiddleston most stylish man of 2017
Two million votes have been counted, and GQ magazine has named actor Tom Hiddleston the 'Most Stylish Man of 2017'.
"This year, the title goes to a Brit who wears a suit better than just about any other A-lister alive right now," GQ wrote in their announcement.
"He's a master of the sartorial arts, a king of the red carpet, and makes one damn good bolognese."
The Thor star knocked off Harry Styles in the final round of judging, thanks to his "extra-tidy red carpet appearances and a taste for Gucci sneaker".

After six rounds of voting, 63 eliminations, approximately 3,200 extremely dope fits, and two million votes cast (250,000-plus in the last round alone), we have determined the Most Stylish Man of 2017. This year, the title goes to a Brit who wears a suit better than just about any other A-lister alive right now. That man is Tom Hiddleston.
Thanks to a fan base we would call passionate, were that word remotely strong enough to describe their allegiance to the Thor star, along with a slew of extra-tidy red carpet appearances and a taste for Gucci sneakers, T-Hid (we made that up just now, we're going with it, please deal) knocked off Harry Styles in the final. It wasn't even a particularly close fight: Hiddleston took some 65 percent of the votes. The printed-suit wonderboy was stiff competition, as was just about everyone else Hiddleston took down on his way to the crown. Aziz Ansari, Tom Ford, Robert Pattinson, Shawn Mendes, and Zayn Malik are the cast of a movie we would love to see, but they were also all second-best to Hiddleston.
A GQ cover. A hundred dope suits. A massively successful superhero movie. And now, the title of Most Stylish Man of 2017. It's been a good year to be Tom Hiddleston.

Up to date with the trends, if you don’t mind!
Tumblr media
As opposed to some people, I'm not of the opinion that Dick Grayson is a fashion disaster. I don't imagine I will convince anyone who loves to portray him as the eternal looser... But the thing with fashion is that a lot of it quickly gets dated. Since artists have drawn Dick in contemporary style for decades, it's bound to happen that some outfits get past their best before date.
Tumblr media
If we're to put the blame where it belongs, it has to be Greg Land, who drew Dick in a multicoloured polka dot shirt in Nightwing vol 1 # 2. That's the outfit most people reference when they claim that Dick dresses outlandishly. However, in the 90s, polka dot shirts (and long hair on men) were trendy – which is something that we tend to forget some decades later, when another era of fashion surrounds us.
Tumblr media
The original Nightwing suit from 1984 also gets a fair amount of flak. Certain artists, like Jim Aparo, drew the collar ridiculously high, unlike how it looked with George Pérez’ art. But on the whole, it's not in a completely different style from other superhero suits that were introduced in the 70s and 80s. High collars and deep v-necks were popular.
Tales of the Teen Titans # 44, Batman vol 1 # 441.
Tumblr media
Tyroc (1976); Black Lightning (1977); Dazzler (1980); Jericho (1984).
Tumblr media
Gladiator (1977), Black Cat (1979), Atari Force (1982), Mockingbird (1980), Booster Gold (1986).
Fashion at the time was about crossovers and breaking rules, and using fabrics such as rubber and vinyl. And disco...  Here are some pictures from the 70s and 80s, to remind ourselves what it looked like at the time.
Tumblr media
I guess some people might point the finger at the original Robin suit, too? But, seriously, it's a 1940s child superhero costume, designed at a time when the printing process favoured bright primary colours. (Besides, in a fair number of versions, Bruce is the one who designed the Robin suit. Now, if we want to talk ridiculous – take a look at Bob Kane's original sketch of the Bat-Man.)
Without further ado. Let's have a look at some of Dick's outfits over the years, and see what was considered stylish at the time, shall we.

Dick in civilan garbs in the 1940s and 1950s. The boy's fashion at the time included knitted pullovers and sweaters which were also worn over shirt and tie. Bright solid or patterned sportcoats were worn with dress-shirt and necktie or bowtie. (Knickers, that is short trousers, were, by the way, children's fashion in the 1940s.)
Pictures are fashion illustrations from the 40s and 50s and from Batman # 13 (1942). Star Spangled Comics # 65 (1947), # 75 (1947), # 98 (1949), # 111 (1950).

College teenager Dick in the 1970s dressed in sweaters, vests, long collared shirts. His hair was side-parted. And, you guessed it – vests, long collared shirts and turtleneck sweaters were essential fashion items of the 1970s. Dick-pics from: Batman # 248 (1973). Batman Family # 8 (1976). Detective Comics # 483 (1979). Detective Comics  # 495 (1980).

Tumblr media
Leather jacket, t-shirts and sweaters and jeans were trendy in the 1980s. In Tales of the teen titans 43 (1984), Dick wears jeans and an expensive leather jacket.

"That" outfit in Nightwing vol 1 # 2 (1995). "Seinfeld" from 1991.

Overalls were huge in the 1990s, even when you weren't custom building your own car. Nightwing vol 2 # 16 (1998), and fashion photos from the 1990s.

In the early 2000s, casual clothing was a big trend. Rugby shirts was a common look, and the leather jacket was still popular. Batman: Gotham Knights # 21 (2001), # 45 (2003), Nightwing vol 2 # 49 (2000), #77 (2003), # 80 (2003).
Tumblr media
In the mid-2000s, some trendy things were: Casual, fitted shirt. Casual blazer. Cardigan. V-neck t-shirt. Trucker hat. Tank top. Nightwing vol 2 # 133 (2007), # 141 and # 144 (2008). Fashion photos from 2008, design Diesel, Tony Melillo.

In The New 52 and Rebirth, Dick has mostly dressed casually (unless it's for a funeral, of course). Jeans, t-shirts, shirt without tie, sweaters, hoodie, parka, blazer or leather jacket. Often layer on layer - sweater over shirt, shirt on top of t-shirt...  The 2010s wasn't long ago, and it's not easy to sort through fashion shows and micro-trends and see a bigger picture just yet... But a few of the things that were trendy at least at some time during the 2010s were: the colour grey; one-button suits and blazers; striped sweater; checkered shirt; fitted leather jackets; parka; pastel colours; angular v-neck.
Nightwing vol 3 # 5 (2012), # 6 (2012), # 10 (2012), # 17 (2013),  # 27 (2014). Nightwing vol 4 # 10 (2017), # 15 (2017). Assorted fashion photos from 2012–2017.

Today it's 2020, and when it comes to men's hairstyles, crew cut is popular. Nightwing vol 4 # 63, and photo from TheTrendSpotter's post 40 Best Short Hairstyles for Men in 2020.
Tumblr media
And hey, superhero apparel were on the catwalk in the 2010s, too. How more fashion forward can Dick Grayson become...? Misel Saban, June 27, 2014 (Batman) and Sarah Dos Santos, December 16, 2013 (Superman); Kyle Towers, February 2, 2013 (Spiderman).
However, I don't see Dick (written) as interested in keeping up with the fashion. But he did live his first years in a small trailer. And since then, he's been accustomed to a life where you never know when your home is going to be obliterated, or your foster father will kick you out. Or when you have to rush away to follow a lead in another city or save the world somewhere. Or the next time you'll be shot and forget that you have a flat to live in... He’s bound to have learned not to have an excessive amount of clothes.
Tumblr media
When he does need to buy something, because his last outfit went up in smoke or something, he'll simply pick from what's in the front inside the shops. Hence, he'll often be dressed up-to-date. New Titans # 76, New Titans # 86, Nightwing vol 2 # 89, Nightwing vol 2 # 20, Nigtwing vol 3 # 19, Nightwing vol 4 # 50 , Robin Year One # 3.
Top pictures from: Batman # 237 (1971), New Teen Titans # 16 (1982), Nightwing vol 2 # 129 (2007), Nightwing vol 4 # 10 (2016).
