[Plain text:
Dear diary,
I’ve now been here for 3 months. Which leaves 3 months til  first complete assimilation into humanity. It’s odd. A weird middling thing where I am certainly not human. Humans do not have wings nor gills. Nor more than one set of eyes. Truly pitiful  creatures. Except I’ve also lost my divinity. I can no longer see people coming from a distance nor breathe under water. If I was to remove my heart again, I’d likely die. Something or another about interrupting divine intervention and interfering with the equilibrium. But before that, I’d revert back to my divinity. It amuses me to think that the divine is considered perfect. It’s certainly perfect. 15 pairs of eyes, antennae, gills, teeth sharp enough to kill, 9ft wingspan etc. As I stated, perfect. For life in the forest, murdering any pathetic animal that crossed my path perhaps. Or maybe to cement myself as the most abominable creature to roam the streets. Not for interacting with society at large lest I get thrown into a freaks show. Or killed. Unfortunately, my perfection is more primal. Perfect hearing, sharp teeth, flying out of situations, swimming out of situations. I’m never one to complain, this form has its benefits considering I am in the forest til I present a bit more ‘human’ which will likely be for a few months yet.
P.S
3 months have passed. I’m as human as can be. My teeth are still sharp but not unnaturally so. I can no longer breathe under water and I stay away from ledges and high cliffs lest I trip with no wings to save me. The eyes that reside on my skin and not my now nonexistent wings have faded into faintly magical runes that decorate my skin. Through cosmetics and and a particular sense  for deception I easily pass for a human. Except, of course, in all ways that truly count. After all, I still am yet to learn the art of charisma and flattery; a skill that not all humans possess yet proves useful in the day to day. It seems I need to do some practice firsthand. Both humanity and divinity have their advantages and  disadvantages.
P. S. S
The irony in which I called humans ‘pathetic’ creatures when I, post metamorphosis, have not a penny to my name and are relatively powerless in the capitalistic struggle of this life, is not lost on me. ]

does anyone follow the happy sugar life tags? if you do hello and have an info dump.
happy sugar life and love:
the central theme of happy sugar life is love and how people perceive love. all of the characters perceptions of love are what caused them all to be obsessed with shio. all of the characters perceptions of love are warped by their world view and their upbringing. this is just a simple breakdown of how all the characters perceive love and why it causes them to be obsessed with shio.
satou: (tw for mentions of abuse)
satou was raised with a emotionally manipulative aunt who had a warped perception of love herself. satou’s aunt taught satou that the abuse her aunt endured in the hands of her many lovers was just their way of showing love. satou was taught a different perception of love by society, causing satou to sleep around but was only left with a feeling of bitterness. this also ties into the sub-theme of purity (although that theme is definitely more present in taiyou)
when satou met shio a light went off into her head. finally satou found the love that she had been craving for so many years and this love was not bitter. shio herself was perfect, innocent, **pure**. shio was nothing like her aunt or her aunt’s lovers. shio was light itself to satou. satou finally felt the happy sugar life she dreamed of. and she will do anything to protect this happy sugar life.
satou has never felt the pure love for anyone except shio. satou finally saw something pure, something perfect. shio is the complete opposite of everything her aunt represented. shio was the only thing that could make satou feel pure. satou didn’t get that bitter taste she got from other relationship. this is why she latched onto shio and why she went so far out of her way to protect shio.
but in the end it was never about shio, the relationship was only meant to be beneficial to satou, another theme present throughout the show. shio wasn’t satou’s love, shio was the purity that satou wanted in her life.
taiyou: (tw for mentions of sexual assault)
taiyou was a fairly standard guy, he was handsome, charming, he had everything he wanted in life. that all ended once his manager (a woman who also had a warped perception of love) raped him. now taiyou wasn’t what he was before. now taiyou was not perfect. not pure.
to taiyou, shio represents the purity he so desperately wants back. shio is what taiyou wanted to be. pure, clean, innocent. shio was the only thing he felt that could “fix him” although deep down he knew nothin could.
same as it is for satou, shio is not the actual thing he wants. he wants the innocence and purity that leeches off of shio. taiyou doesn’t want shio, he wants to be shio. he wants to be in her position and be the innocent, pure one.
purity was the only thing that made taiyou feel loved. the moment taiyou didn’t feel pure, he felt unloveable. purity was love to taiyou.
asahi: (tw for mentions of abuse)
asahi also grew up around people with a warped perception of love. his father was abusive and his mom could very easily flip a switch. his mother could easily blow up at him or be the sweetest person on the face of the earth. this caused asahi to not feel loved. due to the intense physical abuse his father put him through he felt as if he was not pure.
the difference between satou and taiyou and asahi is asahi isn’t protecting shio out of his own selfish desires. asahi is protecting shio to keep shio from being what he is. asahi wants to protect that purity shio has, not take it for himself or leech off of shio like a parasite.
asahi is showing his love for shio by trying to give her the life he wish he could have. asahi slightly projects himself onto shio, giving shio what he wish he could’ve had.
another part of asahi feels guilty for not being there for shio in the first part of her life, causing him to almost spiral into obsession with finding her, allowing him to be manipulated by others.
but in the end none of this matters to asahi. asahi’s mother showed her love for asahi by enduring the abuse asahi’s dad put her through, giving up her own well being for her children.
all of the happy sugar life characters represent a different part of satou:
shio: her innocence and purity
asahi: her protectiveness over shio and her need to right the wrongs her aunt did to her
taiyou: her facade and how it comes crashing down
the manager and teacher: a more fucked up version of her
all the characters in happy sugar life represent satou in some way or another. a lot of the characters in the show mirror her and her personality traits. almost every character also holds a piece of satou’s personality. by mirroring the characters off of satou it makes her more likeable and justifies her actions in the viewers mind, even if her actions are explicitly not justified.
shio herself represents satou in her early life. they’re appearances even mirror each other and they look incredibly similar.
shio represents who young satou could’ve been without her aunt’s corruption. shio represents the purity and innocence that satou herself no longer has, so she uses shio to supplement that.
asahi represents satou’s protectiveness over satou and her regret in life. asahi holds a lot of regret for not being able to help his mom or stop his dad. he also holds guilt for not being there for shio.
asahi’s life goal is to get back to shio and help her. at the end of the series you see asahi snap and freak out over shio. asahi will do anything to get shio back with him at this point. just like satou does to protect her happy sugar life.
taiyou represents satou’s corruptness and her lost innocence. taiyou recognizes the purenees that comes from shio, and he wants that for himself. similar to how satou hoards shio’s innocence for herself.
taiyou values pureness, just like how satou does. they both value the innocence in shio. satou values that because it is a pure relationship with no ulterior motives, like the many relationships she had been in before. taiyou values it because he feels the need to take shio’s pureness for himself.
(tw for mentions of sexual assault)
the teacher and the manager represent the fucked up part of satou that most people know her as who have seen the series. a pedophile. the difference between the manager and teacher and satou is that satou is only interested in the romantic part of her relationship with shio. also that we are lead to hate the teacher and manager and love satou
the teacher attempts to lure satou into an alleyway and openly admits to cheating on his wife with multiple women. he represents the older part of satou.
the manager raped and kidnapped taiyou and she represents what satou’s aunt implanted in her brain. the toxicity of the manager represents her aunt. and again, they even look similar.
the manager even makes satou look better by comparison when satou tells her “you’re not supposed to go after underage kids.”
the way the writers make the other characters mirror the worst part of satou makes you want to root for satou. by making the teacher and manager worse than satou it’s very easy to say, “at least she’s not like them”.
like it or not shio is safest with satou in the series. with her mother she would be abused by her father, with asahi she would be homeless, taiyou openly admits he would rape her and she’s too young to be out there on her own.
all of this makes satou incredibly sympathetic to the viewer, by portraying her as a lesser evil it’s easier to see why she does what she does. not only that but satou also has the added plus of being a cute teenaged girl. even the manager says to her, “you can’t get everywhere in life by being cute.” but she can, and she does.
by making satou not good nor evil in the viewers eyes it makes her a much more interesting character and by mirroring the other characters off of satou it makes her more sympathetic because the people you’re rooting for have elements of satou in them.

Wait here’s my TMA/TD fear-assignment master post (gen 1-3 only sorry I couldn’t think of any strong ones for gen 4):
Gen 1:
Gwen: Buried (her fear of being buried alive, yes, but also I think it’d be fun bc you know she looks like a corpse)
Courtney: Eye (I love archivist Courtney. Also the fact she needs knowledge and access to knowledge through things like the cheating incident and her PDA, but it destroys her...mwah, Jon shit)
Duncan: Desolation (he destroys everything he touches for his own satisfaction. His relationships, private property, exc.)
Cody: Lonely (no matter how many people he talks to or matches together he’s always single and alone, and his social awkwardness wards people off)
Owen: Vast, maybe Web (his fear of flying and also being voted out quickly and his vying for attention are Vast 100% but also the fact Chris used him as a spy in TDA speaks to web)
Noah: Web (his unwillingness to be manipulated by Alejandro or forced to participate by other players is very webby)
Heather: Web or Hunt (she’s manipulative and almost always gets what she wants, but also her preying on others and being adamant about her goals is Hunt shit so idk)
Lindsay: Flesh (her fear of being not beautiful? Flesh 100%)
Beth: Lonely (she’s always trying to be nice or be like others but never gets the attention she wants from it)
Trent: Stranger (his fear of mines, the way everyone finds his number nine compulsion so uncanny, the way he’s put off when Gwen starts acting different in TDA? Yea that’s the stranger. I could definitely see a statement where he talks about always seeing mimes mimicking him and he begins to mimic others and can’t stop)
Katie and Sadie: Stranger (the parallels with Breekon and Hope kill me. They act and look so uncannily alike. Could be interesting if one of them started mimicking the other too and the other is disturbed)
Izzy: Spiral (shes fucking wild)
Eva: Slaughter (full of rage)
Bridgette: Hunt (her fear of being in the woods and her connection with animals is all Huntcore)
Geoff: Web or Lonely (seeing as he’s such a party dude, I could see him being terrified of what it’s like to not be surrounded with people, but also the way he becomes more manipulative in TDA is kinda web-ish)
Leshawna: I honestly dunno. I wanna say Slaughter because of her attitude towards Heather, but also her realist view reminds me of a Spiral victim like Helen, and her actions in TDA are reminiscent of a Web avatar. I’m gonna say Slaughter is the strongest.
Harold: Dark (fear of being sneaked up on by ninjas first off, but also considering how much he knows about everything, I think being in the dark would terrify him)
DJ: Hunt (his animal curse in WT but it manifests to be like way worse)
Ezekiel: Corruption or Hunt (him going feral and becoming a monster is classic corruption but his determination to win through any means necessary is very Hunt)
Tyler: Lonely (his need to impress everyone with his sports stunts and his constant attempts to get Lindsay to remember him? Yea lonely)
Justin: Flesh (his fear of being ugly and the importance he puts in his looks are classic Flesh behavior)
Alejandro: Flesh (he’s manipulative like a Web avatar, but also a lot of his charm comes from his looks, and his fear of putting gross food in his body is very Fleshy)
Sierra: Eye (she knows everything about everyone dude)
Gen 2:
Zoey: Lonely (she grew up ostracized in a small town and has a hard time making the friends she longs for, she’s definitely tied to the Lonely)
Cameron: Eye (once again, knows everything, and wants to experience everything. I could see him as Courtney’s runner-up or assistant, and marked by the buried because I can imagine his bubble would make him scared of being trapped again)
Mike: Web (he’s afraid of doing bad things against his will)
Mal: Slaughter (he just wants to fuck shit up and hurt people)
Vito: Flesh (also puts a lot of importance in his looks)
Manitoba: Hunt (explorer man)
Svetlana: Flesh (since she puts so much time and love into gymnastics, I think an incident involving injury would freak her tf out)
Chester: End (he’s old and wants to make the most of that)
Brick: Dark (he’s afraid of being lost without direction, as well as the literal dark)
Jo: Hunt (shes focused on winning almost exclusively)
Dawn: Extinction (she’s afraid of the earth and creatures on it withering away)
Anne Maria: Lonely (she puts so much emphasis on being seen and loved and gets volatile when people challenge that)
Scott: Web (he’s a master of scheming, what more should I say)
B: Eye (he’s afraid of others knowing about him and can’t give things up easily, but will use his knowledge to help when needed)
Staci: Stranger (she makes up so many lies for no gain besides attention and upsetting people. She’s like a car wreck you can’t look away from)
Dakota: Corruption (marked by the lonely because she needs attention to function, but I think her becoming dakotazoid and the terror she had getting there points to corruption. Also allegory of Hollywood destroying her blah blah blah)
Sam: Desolation (his self worth is put into material objects like video games and the destruction of them is shown to ruin him)
Lightning: Hunt (I know his body image leans into Flesh but his determination to win and arrogance are like that of a natural predator)
Gen 3:
Shawn: Extinction (I think he’s marked by corruption too because of his fear of zombies corrupting him, but the mass tragedy angle and doomsday prepping is very extinction-like)
Jasmine: Buried (claustrophobia, yea, but also her fear of being trapped by her feelings for Shawn point to buried. This ones kinda loose though, I could see her connected to the web or hunt too)
Sky: Flesh (similar to Svetlana, I think an injury as a gymnast would destroy her, also a big part of flesh is pride, and losing her pride and winning streak freaks Sky out)
Dave: Corruption (his germaphobia as well as his insistence on being with or ‘infecting’ Sky...yea that’s the corruption)
Scarlett: Eye (she knows a lot and uses it to watch and manipulate others)
Max: Web (he’s very methodical, if not smart, in his scheming, and him being outwitted by Scarlett freaked him tf out)
Ella: Lonely (I mainly say this for her fear of being hated by Sugar. I could also see Buried bc shes upset about Chris trapping her by revoking her ability to sing)
Leonard: Spiral (could also lean into Stranger, but his ability to convince so many people to believe in something that doesn’t exist purely with his own belief in magic is very Spirally, plus his frustration with Dave is much like Micheal’s with Jon when he could see through his bullshit, and him losing his ability to cast physical magic is very much like a Spiral victim’s descent back into humanity)
Beardo: Dark (put simply, we don’t know much about him, and he disguises any recognizable trait with sounds. Could also be Stranger)
Sugar: Hunt (fear of losing, exc. also the way she preys on others weaknesses for her own game, pun intended? Yea)
Sammy (I will not call her Samey in this house): Lonely (Amy traps her in a world where no one will talk to her or validate her ideas, it’s pretty sad. Could also see her touched by the Eye during her time impersonating Amy)
Amy: Web (she’s great at manipulating others into liking her)
Topher: Stranger (him trying to replace Chris and disillusion others to it is a pretty not-them move)
Rodney: Lonely (the fact that he’s constantly misunderstood and can’t connect with others because of it. Sad)
Feel free to add your own input! I’m not 100% sure on quite a few of these and some of the traits of the fears overlap (Stranger and Web, Hunt and Slaughter, exc.) so uh beans

The Rose Speaks of Love Silently
So yeah. Back again. This is the second part of the Soul Rose story, the first being Crimson as a Rose. I hope you enjoy this! And like, I don’t know what happened, but this turned out to be like 3k. Oops and all that I guess.
This will not be the last of this series, so like, don’t worry about that. I just have exactly no ideas for it. If you have anything you’d like to see in this verse, hit me up. Heaven knows I need help with ideas.
This is Maribat, ship being Jasonette. Don’t like, don’t read.
Ao3 || Part 1 || Part 3
______
As long as she could remember, her head had been filled with noise. Loud, loud noise. It didn’t matter that everything else around her was quiet — the voices in her head never left her alone. At least they weren’t malevolent but rather kind. It didn’t help with her life though.
The more she could find fallen soft petals around her, the louder the voices inside her head grew.
She had once been told it was because she carried the rose and the creation miraculous — the single existing miraculous that could only be wielded by someone with a Soul Rose. Few people with one existed these days, and even fewer were suitable for one since over half of the living Rose Souls were corrupted due to their lack of empathy and love.
Of the few Rose Souls that were alive, she was the only one capable of love even after having lost most of her petals. No empathy left, that was sure, but somehow all of her love was stored in that one petal still hanging tight.
Or, perhaps, that petal was still hanging tight for she refused to give into her wrath.
She cradled her rose closely to her chest, tears falling down her cheeks and staining the dry ground. She wished for her capability of empathy to be back, but nothing she could think of could heal her.
“It’s not that you were broken from the very beginning — no, dear, they broke you.”
Those were the words that her master had told her before he had been murdered. Her own partner had murdered her master, their master. He had been the only one that knew about her Soul Rose aside from her parents who rejected her once they found out she had been fighting the evil that controlled their city, their lives, and because of that, she now had no one left.
There was no one left that she could go to.
Her only friends had forgotten about her. Perhaps that was for the better. As far as they were aware, she was a liar, a jealous bitch, someone who only wanted to manipulate all of them. All of them had told her they could not survive without her, that she was what kept them all glued together, but now it seemed like it didn’t matter to any of them.
They had accepted the new girl in without a blink, without a second thought, and then they had given her — the one some of them had known for most their lives — spot to the new girl, the stranger none of them knew anything about.
In class, in life, in their hearts, in their souls.
Because Marinette could see their souls...
...She knew that was exactly what they had done.
And so, there was now another everyday Ladybug sitting next to them, laughing alongside them; they ate her words from her palm like it was the sweetest nectar. It wasn’t like any of her words even held any truth to them, but somehow all of the people following her didn’t mind, didn’t care that she would never give them anything like Marinette had. Her replacement seemed to mean more to everyone than she ever did even though all of her words were just beautiful lies, but even so Marinette stayed. She decided she couldn’t go anywhere else — she still needed to be there to save them from the evil each new day.
She didn’t want to stay. She hated— no, she loathed being there for there were memories everywhere in the city. But, while that was true, she could understand why it was important she had them. Marinette knew that she could learn from her past. She knew that she needed to stop trusting people so blindly. While being able to trust was beautiful, she knew she was not supposed to let her trust destroy her.
And so she slowly learnt to value herself. She deserved better than them.
And she would find something better than them, there was no question about that.
At least she had all the kwamii with her. The kwamii, and the ever-present voices in her head. At least they loved her and cared about her when no one else could bother.
Freak!, the people she once considered her friends screamed at her when they saw her speaking with someone when they could see no one.
It’s alright, love, they don’t deserve you, the voices in her head said. Tikki said they were the ghosts of the previous Ladybugs. Marinette smiled through the hate she got.
You’re just jealous of Lila and all her achievements, they justified their actions and themselves as they denied her her right to defend herself and drove her away from everyone she could have once considered her friend.
Don’t worry, there will one day come a person that sees you for you and your worth and they’ll love you more than anything in this world. On that day those people will regret ever letting go of you, the kwamii told her as she cried, wiping her tears away and cuddling up to her.
But, even as the voices were kind to her, and even as the kwamii tried to love and comfort her, Marinette fell. She fell to her sadness and pain, she fell to her need of someone else. As the days passed by, she finally let go of her hope to find someone else, someone that could accept her and love her for her and not for what she could give them.
Or, so it was until that day anyway.
Marinette was wandering around, her small bag filled with different kinds of snacks she had made in case she found someone upset so she could make sure Papillon couldn’t get to them. She would rather not fight anyone today, thank you very much.
Once she went home — a small cottage at the border of the forest — to get a refill of her snack stocks, she spotted a rose with no petals near it. It was clear to her from the very second she saw it that this was a Soul Rose. It screamed crimson to her, and she was sure that one day long ago its petals had been a beautiful crimson, just like blood was.
And, for it indeed was a Soul Rose, it was clear that the Rose Soul it belonged to needed it. Badly. The Rose wasn’t dead, so that meant its Soul was still alive as well. Rose Souls were never supposed to be apart from their Roses, and definitely not for as long as this Rose and its Soul had been.
Thankfully, being a Rose Soul and the Soul of Creation meant that she was allowed to speak to Roses, even those that weren’t her own. Marinette asked the Rose where its Soul lived and how long they had been apart, and she got her answer as soon as she picked up the Rose for it could sense she was a safe Soul to talk to. As soon as it sensed that she was going to help, that she wanted to help its Soul and return it to them.
Marinette followed the Rose’s instructions and walked always deeper and deeper into the forest until she finally saw a hut there. A man hit its wall and pressed his head against it, clearly frustrated. Marinette lifted the Rose to her heart, listening as the Rose got excited when it could sense its Soul near, and she smiled. She had finally found a Rose Soul, the Rose Soul that needed its Rose back.
She walked closer. A stick cracked under her feet, and the man whipped around to see her, staring as though he had seen a ghost.
Marinette held the Rose close to her chest tightly but was careful to not harm it, and against her white dress, the rose with no petals stained in blood created quite the contrast.
The man glared at her, looking like she was the filthiest scum of the earth, like he was somewhere between punching her, taking the flower from her and murdering her. She stretched her hand out to him and handed him the Rose gently, knowing he must have been anxious to find it.
She still had to admit, he was gorgeous — and that was a lot to say considering she had once known Adrien, the man Parisians called the sex appeal personified. She would have felt bad for him, but she couldn’t bring herself to care — after all, they weren’t friends. But perhaps… Perhaps this man in front of her with black locks, some of it dyed white, and the most icy blue eyes she had ever seen could be someone she could call a friend one day.
She was allowed to hope even if the past seemed to say it was a bad idea.
“Excuse me, I believe this belongs to you,” she said with a quiet voice, putting on a smile to make herself look less threatening. She couldn’t afford to have herself look like she was a threat to him, not what with her holding his Rose, his greatest weakness, his soul in her hands.
The man yanked it from her hands, causing the flower’s thorns scratch her and draw blood. She said nothing about it, only pressed her other hand against it in hopes she could stop the bleeding. She didn’t want to anger him by mentioning he had hurt her when he had only been protective of his Rose. It was understandable anyway.
“How did you find it or this place, and how did you know it was mine?” he snapped, clutching the flower in his hands like it was his lifeline. Maybe it was.
She stood up proud and looked him straight in the eye even as he seemed to be trying to intimidate her. It was kind of working. Marinette was not about to let it stop her. So what if he was much bigger than her, so what if he looked like he could snap her in half without even trying? She was Ladybug, she wasn’t that easily driven away. She’d seen much scarier opponents in her life.
Besides…
He was lonely.
His Rose had talked about him to her. It had told her a little of his life, of him being abandoned and left behind, of his family not caring about him. How people drove him away and called him a freak. He had no one. He couldn’t even talk to his Rose. She wasn’t sure whether it was because he didn’t know how to, or if he didn’t even know it was possible if he learnt the right technique.
Besides, Marinette needed the presence of another human in her life. He had a Rose, and his Rose — while corrupted and sorrowful — was not evil. He was not necessarily a good person in the sense everyone thought of it, but he most certainly was also not a bad person.
“Great. Now, get out of my sight, girl.”
She was not about to give up this easily.
Marinette reached her hand out and grabbed him by his hand. “Wait, what’s your name?” she asked, giving his hand a light squeeze. She wanted to know at least this one thing before letting go.
He froze in the place and slowly turned around, staring at her.
Marinette watched as words formed on his lips but no sound came out. Why do you care? He seemed to ask.
Because no one else does, she wanted to reply.
She didn’t have any time to react before he had already grabbed her wrist and lifted it above her head so high that she had to stand on her toes to touch the ground. She refused to let out a sound. He scowled at her, but she kept the eye contact.
“The hell it concerns you. Go away, now. Shoo,” he said and let go of her wrist. She fell down, her Rose falling out of her bag. Marinette watched as the man stormed inside and slammed the door behind him shut so hard the walls shook and the forest echoed. She left a few snacks next to the door, safe for even animals to eat so even if it wasn’t him that took it, an animal could get a meal.
Then she left, hoping to meet him again. As she rubbed her wrist, trying to ease the aching in it, she quietly swore to herself that she would befriend him and not let him be lonely anymore.
It took a few days before she saw him again. She was sitting in a park watching the children play and run around when a man came and started harassing one of the mothers there. She waited a little, wanting to see if the woman would defend herself, but when she didn’t, Marinette stood up and started making her way to them.
Only, the Rose Soul she had met earlier came in between and told the man to fuck off (to put it kindly, anyway). He helped the mother and asked if she was alright, but all she did was call her children to her and scream at him before leaving. Tell him that she didn’t need his help, that she didn’t need help from some creature that came from hell — a freak, a monster.
Marinette was seething. This woman had no right to call him that no matter what he had done before (unless he had directly hurt her, then possibly) because right now he was helping.
People were despicable.
But, as much as she would have liked to go tell the woman just what she thought about it, the Rose Soul mattered more. That was precisely why she instead went to the Rose Soul, addressing him.
“Are you alright?”, she asked, smiling at him with gentle eyes as he turned around. He seemed shocked to see her, and Marinette wasn’t sure whether that was because she was there or because she had asked how he was doing. The latter option sounded horrible. Had no one truly asked him that in such a long time? Had it truly been that long since another living human being had cared about him?
“None of your business, kid. Leave me alone.”
“I’m not a girl though, I’m an adult. And yes, it is very much my business — I saw your Rose. You’ve been hurt so much you’ve lost yourself.”
He seemed to be fighting himself, trying to decide whether he should tell her everything or leave right that second.
“Why are you so damn persistent about this?”
“Because I want to be your friend. Now, what’s your name? I’m Marinette.”
“That… that’s such a horrible decision, wanting to get close to me.”
“Oh well, would not be my first horrible decision,” she told him sneering quietly as she remembered how she had decided to be friends with untrustworthy people. Then she dug out a small box of colourful cookies, offering them to the man. “Do you want a macaron?”
The man reached out his hand before jerking it back, unsure of whether he should take one or not. Marinette shook the box lightly, still in front of him, urging him to just pick one. It took him a while to actually take one and even longer before he took a bite, but when he did, she could just almost see his Rose glow with warmth and joy it had not gotten to experience in a long time.
Marinette beamed as he ate the rest of the macaron, happy to see him enjoy it.
“Do you like it?” she asked, tilting her head and kept her smile on her face. Marinette wanted to step closer to him and touch him, maybe hug him as it seemed he had not gotten positive human contact in a long while, but consciously forced herself to stay back. She needed to respect his boundaries that she didn’t even really know yet, she didn’t know where he set them. That’s why it was all the more important for her to make sure she didn’t disrespect him.
“Yes… It was good,” he responded, eyeing her closely. She hoped that whatever it was that he was looking for in her turned out to be positive. Heaven knows both of them needed another human being near them.
Marinette felt Tikki nudging her leg from inside her bag. Yes… Tikki was there for her. No matter what happened here, Tikki would still be there and Marinette wouldn’t be left alone.
Unlike this Soul.
She clapped her hands and squealed. “I’m so glad you liked it! I was afraid you wouldn’t, but it seems my worries were unfounded.”
And finally, finally Marinette could see a smile forming on his face. It was small, barely there, but she counted it as a victory. And besides, he looked absolutely gorgeous when he smiled. It was much better than she could have ever even hoped for.
“So, what’s your name?” she asked once more, looking deep into his icy blue eyes, looking at the corruption that was his beautiful soul. She took a rose with only few crimson petals, all of them looking like she had dipped them in the blue of the sky and presented it to him. She knew he recognised it immediately as one of the few roses that held someone’s soul on this earth.
Because indeed, she too was one of the very few souls that were personifications of roses, and she decided the best course of action was to trust him with her secret without really even knowing him. She trusted him with her greatest weakness.
After a long, silent while, the man took his eyes off the rose in her hand and looked at her instead, eyes wide. “Jason,” the hesitating, broken voice said. How long had it already been since he last time told someone his name…? How long had it already been since someone last time asked for his name?
But regardless, Marinette already loved his name.
Marinette reached out her hand to him, waiting for him to take it. When he hesitatingly placed his hand in her own, his Rose appeared in the air in front of them, and she watched in wonder as a crimson petal took from and reattached itself to the petalless Rose.
A tear rolled down Jason’s cheek as Marinette smiled. He repeated his words, told her his name with the barest hint of a faint smile on his face, and at that moment, Marinette was sure she couldn’t have been happier.
“My name is Jason.”

THE ZODIAC: SCORPIO THE SCORPION
Tumblr media
Date of Rulership: 23rd October-21st November; Polarity: Negative, female; Quality: Fixed; Ruling planet: Mars/Pluto; Element: Water; Body part: Reproductive organs; Colour: Deep red; Gemstone: Opal; Metal:Steel or iron.
Attempting to make sense out of the eighth sign of the zodiac can sometimes mimic the insurmountable task of trying to answer a cosmological question as to why the universe came into being. If we could equate Scorpio with a physical object, it would be an iceberg. Why, you ask? Well everyone finds it difficult to relax and be uninhibited around an iceberg, especially when you’re on a ship and there’s simply no way of telling what lies beneath the surface of the water, how big it is, and if it will steadfast melt or simply tear a slit into your vessel and sink you. What you see or what you think you see isn’t always what you get, and that tenet is truer of Scorpio than it is for any other sign.
In equating the iceberg with the archetype of Scorpio, the part resting above the water would be the desolate, unapproachable, and cryptic exterior that doesn’t quite lend itself to close investigation for fear of judgement and ridicule, and the larger part beneath the water is the smouldering chamber of power-packed emotions and unconscious images that are left to proliferate there unchecked and are rarely, if ever, vented. Just as the iceberg severs itself from a main body and floats into territories foreign to its own nature, so too does Scorpio show the side of itself that is frequently incompatible with social rituals and codes, alienating it from the joys and benefits of social intercourse. Moreover, ice is a solid, concrete form of water and Scorpio’s watery but fixed nature indicates that it is a sign that can quickly become fixated with things. Scalding is usually associated with heat, though conditions of severe cold such as those facilitated by ice can generate analogous effects. Hence just as heat and cold can scald the skin so too can Scorpio’s behavioural extremes, brooding intensity, and fiery emotional outbursts leave people with psychic burns and scars that won’t easily be forgotten or forgiven. Scorpio, then, is the iceberg that drifts through the cosmic ocean, a block of ice that remains acutely aware of its own temporal existence, vulnerability, and composition while at the same time emanating a snow-white radioactive plume around it that alerts others to proceed with caution, or better still, stay away altogether.
The soul of a Scorpio man or woman is extremely delicate, soft, and pliable. Think of it in terms of a piece of twenty-four carat gold that can easily be bent, twisted, broken in half, amalgamated with other metals, and fashioned into material things that do not accurately express the spiritual worth of ‘gold’. Being the intuitive and proud gem that it is, Scorpio knows this and inherently feels that it’s only viable recourse is to raise gargantuan walls and set cunning traps in the immediate vicinity around itself as to thwart any foreign invasion which seeks to dismantle its bubbling motivations and innermost desires. The type and nature of defences employed by the Scorpion to ensure this never comes to pass varies from person to person, however one that exists in the arsenal of all is a belligerent, angry, and red-coloured force field that will not allow another cheap laughs at its own expense. In the mind of a Scorpio, any deliberate attempt to humiliate, threated, scold, or tease, vilify and slander either itself or a fellow conscious projection of the universe violates the most vital of moral codes and deserves shameless retaliation.
As we have thus far discerned, Scorpio possesses an innate sensitivity that renders it receptive to even the slightest changes in external temperatures and environment. Thus it seems only natural that the sign might become unnecessarily fixated on trying to control and manipulate everything around it for the sake of lessening its anxieties and maintaining harmony of its inner empire in the manner that a chess player strategically positions pawns, knights, bishops, and rooks to defend an inner sanctuary epitomized by the royal couple. Like the latter, souls incarnating under the stars of Scorpio enjoy playing games in which they can draw like-minded others into their private little worlds, identify their psychic dowry and talents as well as the positive and negative elementary characteristics of their personality, and henceforward advise them on what course of action and karmic life choices they should make. Scorpio enjoys proposing unsolicited makeovers that they believe will emphasize another’s finest characteristics, inside and out, and can be quite intrusive in prying for information that it perceives to be of utmost importance to the wellbeing of its significant other, its loved ones, and itself. Being the control freak that it is, Scorpios are aversed to and become apprehensive around obstinate and autonomous persons that will steer clear of Scorpionic manipulation, especially when the individual concerned is their own partner. Like its close cousin Cancer, Scorpio doesn’t like to be confronted about the way in which it operates or the manner in which it chooses to live its life and will often go to any length to protect its emotional security and hold onto the few momentous others that comprise its cryptic and often unintelligible chess game.
“One thing you’ll really like about me,” says Scorpio, “is the fact that I’m very understanding. I understand the conflict of interests between the outer and inner landscape that can cause one to feel like a social misfit, a reject, a loser, or simply undesired and unwanted. I don’t judge people who are different from the conforming majority; on the contrary, I embrace and honour them. I’m also really good at fixing things. I simply love to pick at something until it’s either fixed or it vanishes from the face of the earth. I’m also intensely self-aware. I’m aware of gestures, subtle energies, actions, and implications that often move in the opposite direction to that of the spoken word and might have their own story to tell. Really, I haven’t got a problem in diving down into the abyssal depths of the human soul, perusing an inner darkness that contains the carnal impulses, compulsions, instincts, and latent desires within you, and then re-emerging into the conscious light to reveal how your outer landscape will inevitably undergo a metamorphosis for the worse if you don’t confront it.
Life is about experiencing this world, but it is also about learning how to die and resurrect throughout the course of one’s lifetime in order to expand the psychic and spiritual fields of our collective consciousness. Alchemically speaking, we might say it involves a threefold cycle: necrosis, the corruption of death; leucosis, rebirth through intuition; and iosis, the conciliation of conscious and unconscious elements that leads to the much desired ruby-red state of illumination. We must all come to terms with the insecurities, hostilities, and boiling obstructions within the depths of our being that set this cycle into motion, as well as find a way of reconciling these qualities with our conscious personalities in order to attain closure. Why, you ask? Well in my search for the truth I have acquired a hunch that there are other dimensions of existence beyond our physical one, and so the plight of each human being should be to purge oneself of murky, carnal qualities that go far in inhibiting the attainment of illumination, inner purity, freedom and most importantly, unalloyed love. I, for one, come into the world karmically prepared for the emotional tribulations life will inevitably throw at me, and I know of no other sign that experiences such cheerful bliss, soaring through the boundless skies like a carefree eagle, when these obstacles are finally overcome.
Like every animal on this planet, I enjoy having sex and will often engage it purely to release tension and other psychic steam that has been collecting in the confines of my subconscious for weeks if not months. Hence, anyone lucky enough to tango with me will share in the providential gift of a mind-blowing and positively uplifting experience. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ll use sex as a method of exploitation, but one should never take me for easy, and I’m not particularly interested in dispassionate and no-strings-attached casual sex. For me, sex is extremely sacred and must involve love and intimacy between two people who care for one another otherwise the act becomes pointless and futile.”
There are two symbols associated with the zodiacal sign of Scorpio. The animal totem that represents the first of these really does correspond to the distribution of stars in the sign’s constellation, and it appears that all ancient cultures from the Chaldeans, Babylonians, and Indians to the Egyptians, Hellenes, and Romans were in unanimous agreement about this. The most significant stellar body in this vivid star group was Antares, a bright eye otherwise known as the Heart of the Scorpion and inextricably linked with the war god Mars. In ancient Egyptian cosmogony, Scorpio was ascribed prominence as the constellation of Seth, the primordial god of destruction, irruption, anger and chaos. In a book by archaeoastronomer Jane Sellers entitled The Death of Gods in Ancient Egypt, astronomy, archaeological evidence, and mythography come together to reveal that the eighty-year battle between the gods Horus and Seth had a precessional basis, the question being which constellation of the equinoxes, Scorpius (Seth) or Taurus (Horus), would gain the ascendency after Orion (Osiris) had been obliterated from the night skies of the northern hemisphere. Given the fervent preoccupation of our ancient ancestors with celestial events, the Predynastic Egyptians would have envisioned a harmonious balance in the annual circuit of the sun when Taurus (Horus) marked the spring equinox and Scorpio (Seth) marked the autumnal equinox. This was something of a Golden Age, a locus classicus when the v-shaped bovine head of Taurus manifested by the Hyades rose heliacally over the eastern horizon at the vernal point just before sunrise and the arachnid-like form of fiery Scorpio reappeared there exactly six months afterward to herald the autumnal equinox. According to Sellers, this Golden Age would have occurred between c. 6900-4867bce before the relentless yet subtle effect of the precessional cycle knocked it all out of allignment.
The second, an astrological shorthand for the zodiacal sign utilized by astrologers in the creation of astrological charts, looks like the small letter “m” save for the fact that the third leg terminates with an upturned arrow. Many astrologers and symbologists have attempted to anatomically define the contemporary sigil, though it appears that none of the suggestions are wholly convincing. Hypotheses linking the modern shorthand symbol to the male reproductive organs, a severed scorpion tail, the tail of the Christian devil, the tail of a mythical dragon, and a coiled serpent have all been proposed. This particular symbol has undergone many changes through time. In Egypt, four demotic tablets were uncovered that recorded days and months in which the five visible planets entered the zodiacal signs over a twenty-eight year period. These revealed that the shorthand symbol used in ancient Egypt was a snake. Alternatively, medieval treatises show an actual scorpion.
In the northern hemisphere Scorpio appears at a time when the formative forces of Mother Nature are at their weakest, but it is also a time of turbulent change when fermentation has commenced and the scales are about to tip towards the proliferation of life energy. Evolving around the rudimentary myth relating the passions of the beneficent Osiris, ancient Egyptian belief ascertained that the latter suffered death and descent into the netherworld beneath the stars of the vigilant Scorpion. In Peri Isidos kai Osiridos, we learn that Osiris’s penis was the only body part that wasn’t found his wife, the mourning Isis, who solved the enigma of how she might conceive a son posthumously by equipping him with one hewn from a piece of wood. The myth’s preoccupation with the reproductive organs, sexuality, and resurrection fits in well with Scorpio as a spiritual archetype intensely preoccupied with the cosmic cycle of death, transformation, and rebirth.
The Scorpion exudes an energy which works in indirect and often cryptic ways. Consequentially, this sign is one of the most misunderstood in the zodiac and will more often than not encounter hostile adversities and reactions from those that cannot comprehend the benevolent intent indigenous to the Scorpion’s nature. Having said that souls incarnating under this sign possess a psychic dowry that enables them to handle and cope with such situations, for one can be sure that the universe will never impose a blueprint onto something or someone unless it is sure that that something or someone can survive experiences and consequences that might be simulated as a result. When looking at the zodiacal image and the symbols as a whole, one intuitively feels that the poisonous stinger and sharp arrow imply sharp qualities and sentiments that cut like glass such as adroitness, cleverness, and smooth-tongued straightforwardness. They also recalls the Stygian depths of Scorpio’s psyche, a raw, windswept, and multifarious breeding ground of passion, charm, astuteness, creativity, intensity, and both sexual and romantic love. These fiery traits can be attributed to the immanence of Plutonian energy in the sign, a prominent planetary position formerly held by Mars.

Coach Steven S1E20
Tumblr media
The episode that launched a thousand subplots <3 “Coach Steven” starts with a Gem mission to an abandoned Communication Hub that is giving off bursts of EMR and messing up telecommunications. Steven asks what that means, and Pearl replies that it’s messing up tv. Steven gets upset and vows to save tv, punching at the columns of the hub. Amethyst tells him they’ll need a stronger Steven, shapeshifting into a buff version of him. She starts punching the tower as well. Pearl states that it will take all day if they destroy the columns one by one. She starts to suggest a plan when Garnet interrupts and says they need Sugilite. Amethyst freaks out with excitement. She’s screaming and jumping all over the place while Pearl looks uncomfortable and upset. Steven asks if Garnet and Amethyst are going to fuse; Amethyst just screams. Pearl questions the wisdom of forming Sugilite and suggests they need to be careful, asking Garnet to fuse with her instead. Garnet rejects the request and says they “just need to be huge” as she and Amethyst start to dance.
Tumblr media
At this point in the series, we’ve only met Opal as a Crystal Gem fusion, and we didn’t get to see the fusion dance that succeeded in forming her. This is our first fusion dance and it is suggestive, to say the least. Pearl tries to prevent Steven from watching but he watches anyway as Garnet and Amethyst form our second new fusion, Sugilite!
Tumblr media
Sugilite is wild, voiced by Nicki Minaj and overpowering with attitude. Steven is in awe of this gigantic woman. Sugilite then forms her flail and starts going to town on the Communication hub. Debris is flying everywhere and Pearl insists on taking Steven home, especially after he is hit in the face with debris. They warp away just as a chunk of the hub crashes into the warp pad, destroying it.  Steven goes to the Big Donut to show off his battle scar, causing Lars and Sadie to laugh at how silly he’s being. Lars tries to brag about what a “real” man should be like but fails to open a jar. Sadie opens it easily and punches Lars when he refuses to thank her. Steven then comes up with the idea of working out together so he can get super strong, Sadie can successfully beat up Lars, and Lars won’t starve if Sadie divorces him. Lars protests, but Steven has already decided to ask his dad to help them. Greg sets up a simple homemade gym and joins the others as he’s neglected to work out for a while. Steven runs to get a headband from his room and meets Pearl, she’s happy with the idea of him exercising until he mentions being like Sugilite. She says that it’s not such a good idea. Steven doesn’t listen and she heads inside and starts singing “Strong in the Real Way”
Tumblr media
She’s so jealous and it’s so adorable
This song is beautiful and always stood out to me. It is the first time Steven isn’t the main singer for a good portion of the song. Pearl sings about how Steven shouldn’t be glorifying the violent Sugilite because she’s out of control. Pearl refuses to admit jealousy, something she always struggles with and insists she could show Steven how to be strong. Steven is hiding under the open window and hears her singing, and in an effort to make amends, starts singing the song as well. Pearl has arguably had the most difficult time as a Crystal Gem, having to keep Pink Diamond’s secrets and dealing with the fact of Steven’s existence, all while dealing with emotional turmoil. Her focus has always been keeping the team together despite the struggles she faces internally and externally. Pearl is strong in a very different way than the brute muscle displayed by Sugilite (and later Steven). Greg, Sadie, and Lars come back the next morning to work out with coach Steven, but as Steven struggles downstairs, Pearl frets about Amethyst and Garnet not coming back yet. She can’t warp to the Communication Hub, and just then Sugilite appears on the horizon.
Tumblr media
Sugilite is bored and upset. She attacks Pearl for leaving her behind and Pearl insists Garnet and Amethyst need to unfuse before they lose themselves to the unstable fusion. Sugilite refuses, wrecking Greg’s gym. Steven is scared and asks Pearl why Sugilite is so upset. Pearl throws Steven aside, who can no longer get up. Pearl attacks Sugilite to try and force her to unfuse. Sugilite easily deflects the attacks and beats Pearl up pretty badly, saying that she’s nothing. Pearl gives up the fight, using her spear to support herself when Steven finds his megaphone and begins to cheer her on. Pearl gets back up with his encouragement and forms a plan to outsmart the fusion. She runs to the top of the hill that the temple is built into and Sugilite follows. She gets to the edge and jumps off while Sugilite taunts her. Pearl throws her spear at the ground just underneath Sugilite’s feet and causes her to fall and unfuse once her flail lands squarely on her head.
Tumblr media
Amethyst and Garnet are exhausted and Pearl is relieved to have the others back. The episode ends with her super excited about her victory and Amethyst and Garnet taking the punishment for getting carried away. Steven ends the episode with a “drop and give me 20!” This episode sets the base for so many subplots and foreshadows Steven’s eventual superstrength. The Communication hub is used by Peridot in season 2 to try and contact Homeworld, introducing Sardonyx and the whole forced fusion plot. Pearl and Garnet’s several episodes long conflict over Pearl’s manipulation of her to get to fuse Sardonyx is upsetting and one of the first plots that are not quickly solved. Peridot’s being abandoned on Earth after “Jailbreak” ties into Lapis and Jasper’s relationship, breakup, and individual story arcs as Peridot paves the way for the others to even begin to consider becoming Crystal Gems. (I realize that is mostly speculation when it comes to Jasper, but with the potential to heal corruption, maybe we’ll see her again soon) The tension in the Crystal Gems whenever Garnet is part of a fusion comes into play several more times in the series, as it is clear she views fusion as something higher than the other gems do. This is foreshadowed by her attitude toward Amethyst being excited about forming Sugilite. She doesn’t look the least bit excited or even happy. Garnet looks annoyed with Amethyst’s reaction. She want’s to get the job done quickly, the only reason she decides on Sugilite in the first place. Steven’s overreaction to getting hit by debris and subsequently bandaging up his eye seems to be more foreshadowing that he may be losing an eye in the near future of the show. His brief obsession with getting “beefy” and “ripped” is comical, especially once his super strength develops. He makes a comment about Lars and Sadie getting divorced, foreshadowing their actual hidden feelings for one another.
Tumblr media
This episode does a lot to work with the Gem’s personalities to shift the group dynamics in a power struggle that serves to characterize them further. Garnet is impulsive and cares about fusion personally where the other gems find it fun. Amethyst is over the top excited about fusing with Garnet. Pearl gets jealous of Garnet's tendency to make final decisions without getting Pearl’s input and uncomfortable with Sugilite’s over the top personality. Sugilite is violent and self-important. Steven as always is enthralled by Gem magic but also by the power Sugilite is able to command, and Pearl’s wits and determination. This episode is well crafted and works as a part of the storyline as well as a standalone episode.

saw multiple people do this so i figured i’d jump on and do it as well!
rating tma entities:
the buried: 6/10. i don’t actually get claustrophobic easily, and personally i love the idea of being buried in a blanket of earth. drowning, not so much though.
the corruption: 1/10. i’m not a huge fan of bugs. except ants. ants are cool. anyways the whole “becoming a nest for a bunch of bugs” is a HUGE no. diseases and decay are also not my thing.
the dark: 9/10. i LOVE the dark. the dark has always been comforting- i don’t think i’d have enough fear for any of the avatars to feed on for me to be worthwhile.
the desolation: 8/10. fire. fire is cool. mhm. not a huge fan of the heat though.
the end: 5/10. i’m just, neutral? i guess? i mean. i’m not really scared of death cause it’s inevitable, but i do love the whole skeleton emo aesthetic thing.
the eye: 3/10. while i love knowing stuff, my social anxiety is WAYYY too bad. if i had the feeling i was being watched all day i think i would simply Break Down
the flesh: 1/10. the body horror is cool, don’t get me wrong, but i want NO part in it.
the hunt: 7/10. the hunt is cool! i run, and definitely understand the adrenaline rush when you’re trying to chase something (in my case, a PR), but i would hate being the hunted. i get enough dreams about being chased, i wouldn’t need that in real life.
the lonely: 6/10. the lonely scares me because it is so close to me. ive definitley been marked by it. that being said, i don’t WANT to be, but i can feel its pull which is scary.
the slaughter: 3/10. i like the music, but war? not for me.
the spiral: 8/10. ooooo funky patterns go brrrrrr. but seriously the spiral is cool. the whole doubting reality thing is terrifying but awesome. the whole going crazy bit isn’t great tbh, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
the stranger: 0/10. OKAY THE STRANGER TERRIFIES ME. i HATE uncanny valley stuff. i HATE things that Aren’t Human but still move. i DESPISE clowns. mannequins FREAK me out. (part of it may be my phobia of masks and mascots and stuff like that.) (scratch that. most if not all of it is probably due to that)
the vast: 10/10. THE VAST MY BELOVED <3333 as an autistic with a special interest in space, what more could i ask for?? i LOVE the vastness of space and the universe, and even the vastness of things inward. think about how big we are compared to insects, then cells, then atoms, then quarks. that feels like part of the vasts domain. not a huge fan of the ocean but i’m willing to deal with it if it means i can think about the vastness of space for my entire life.
the web: 1/10. i like the aesthetic, but the whole being manipulated thing is not my cup of tea.

HEADCANON  //                             ok so forget everything you know abt amara before the world    &    god existed, there is only DARKNESS, aka amara.    she's literally everything.    but the universe is all abt balance, right ?    so god appears, LIGHT    &    perfection    &    all that.    immediately, she tries to kill him bc she wants to go back to the way things were.    to protect himself, god creates the archangels.    after a few fights, amara accepts some kind of truce, bc she now understands that one cannot live without the other    (   for the balance !   ) and that's when she starts to care for him. bc he's new, he makes mistake, but she thinks she can help him grow.
but instead of stopping there    &    being with her, god creates more angels. which means more LIGHT, more GRACE.   that’s when he decides to get rid of amara bc as long as she's here, she'll try to prevent him from creating other creatures in his image.
so he sends the archangels to stop her    &    amara meets michael, aka the first son and the strongest. but he's not the one who manages to trap her :    it's lucifer.    he imprisons her in the mark of cain.    the plan was to LOCK HER UP in the blade    &    throw her in the void or smth, but amara managed to talk to lucifer first.    she saw the ambition he had, and she used it against him :    instead of throwing the blade away, lucifer took the mark for himself.
and that's how lucifer's corruption begins.    how he starts taking decisions against god.     even after the mark is given to cain in punishment, lucifer can't get her out of his head, and that's why he falls.    and with cain, her goal is basically to DESTROY god's    &    lucifer's creations.    (    demons    &    humans   &    angels, she isn't picky !!    )    for a while, it works :    the bloodlust she has is the same that cain experiences, he can't stop killing, and she never stops asking for more.    but then cain falls in love    &    amara loses the hold she had on his mind, bc it is actually weaker than the one she had on lucifer's.
after that, she can't actually do much, bc she's TRAPPED    &    she doesn’t see the point of fighting cain's resistance.    that is, until she meets dean.    aka the perfect vessel    &    the righteous man.    (    the brightest soul she has ever seen    +    the vessel for an archangel.    he's basically everything she has ever wanted to corrupt ahshsnk bc he’s god’s creation at its finest    &    yet he has every flaw that she has given to humanity before being locked up    )
so when she meets him, she starts whispering things to cain again, and that's why he gives up the mark so easily.    (    &    why cain says that only the "WORTHY" can take the mark   !    )    when others have come to him in the past, she didn't really care, but dean ??    dean she can't let him go.    and when dean takes the mark ?    she's freaking ecstatic.    the BOUND is stronger when he holds the blade, but even without, it's the most powerful she has been in a while.    she knows everything about dean, every regret, his guilt, his pain.   she feels so connected to him she doesn't even mind that she's trapped inside his head.    &    when he kills ppl or creatures ?    it strenghtens their link even more    (    and dean knows that, knows that he won't be able to stop it, especially when he says    "once u touch that darkness, it never goes away"    bc from the moment he has started killing with the mark, he has also started doing her work, and somehow, creating some kind of SYMBIOSIS between them ?   like by killing, dean increased the darkness within him, giving amara more power     )
and that's also why he calls it a DISEASE.    bc she spreads, slowly, goes from one thought to another, makes him angrier, make him more violent, makes him ruthless.    the anger she has since the beginning of time ??    she uses it as a model to manipulate dean's.    and when finally she's freed ?    it's the best thing she has ever experienced.    meeting dean in reality doesn't change the fact that they're linked.    he might not have the mark, but he's still "SICK", they're still bound, and she still wants him.    at first, it was bc she wanted to corrupt god's brightest creation.    but now that she knows what's going on inside his head ?    she can't help but think abt all the common points they have.     (   first child, who now have a lil' brother to take care of, except the lil' bro is the one who gets all the attention   &   makes his own decisions without thinking abt them.    feeling like you're NEVER ENOUGH FOR HIM.    dean being mad at god for what happened to his family, feeling like it's not fair ?    that's basically amara since the beginning of time, feeling it's unfair    &    yet she can't do anything abt it   )
she grows, and grows, and grows, but she knows exactly what she wants to do with the earth.    it's not abt destroying it anymore, bc if she does that, then she wouldn't be able to keep dean around.    it's not abt making it in her image.    it has always, ALWAYS been taking back what is hers, aka everything.    so what she wants to do is trapping god in a mark, just like he did with her.    everything she has done in spn was to force god to come down    &    confront her, bc she has always been more powerful    &    she knows that she can beat him.
she wants dean bc she feels like she understands him, they have a bound    &    it's the first time ever that she actually wants to give HUMANITY a chance.    and the kiss scene, after dean tried to kill her ?    it's when she realised that the bound wasn't as strong as it used to be, and that's why she kisses him.    she's actually taking a tiny bit of his soul, so that she has smth that belongs to him, just like he has smth that belongs to her.    (   for the symbiosis thing   )   also, dean wouldn't have been able to kill her with his soul bomb..... bc she was eating souls to grow ??    like it would only have made her more powerful ?    anyway why amara knew that mary was the thing dean needed is bc of the link they have    +    the fact that she has been in his head.   that explains also the times he saw her, the “visions”.
&    she accepts to go with god bc she has realised that humanity is CORRUPTED af, which means that she has an influence here as much as god does.    (   there's a fight between light    &    darkness in everyone, and you have to choose which one u help hashbs   )    and with the promise that he will not try to lock her up again, she accepts to leave earth in peace.

  OPED WARNING
“My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop the Fire Nation.” Oh yeah, I’m going to get that dorky with it today!
So, here’s the spiel, we’re divided as ever. The left hates the right, liberals hate “nazis”, or “fascists”, or “racists” …or whatever the hell it is now and days. But there’s something to be said about coming together. I’m sorry but no matter what news source you look at whether it be CNN, or Newsmax…or Fox News, then you’re inevitably going to come up with one conclusion. We’re divided. The only real thing that you’re going to see is the source of the division from network to network.
I know, I know, you’re tired about hearing all of this bullshit by now. Got it, and I am too damn it…but hear me out on this one. This is classically, no comically standard procedure, and probably something that all of us have seen before. One look at my FACTS section and you’ll know where I’m going with this. I personally thought about it for a moment and started laughing my ass off about the whole thing myself!
So yeah, Star Wars, and Starship Troopers. Something everyone knows, and probably loves to hell. Well if you take a close look at everything you start to see a pattern. Back when “Lucasfilms” came out with the prequels of the series that everyone, except my goofy ass, hated they tried to explain how the galaxy was as fucked as it was. Back in the beginning of everything, regarding the prequels, it was kind of calm and had the normal shenanigans going on in politics. You know, a little corruption here, a lobbyist there, special interests for specific politicians popping up all over the place, normal stuff.
Well the biggest thing that popped up was the clone wars. I understand that it didn’t really kick off until episode II but stick with me on this. There was major upheaval. One man, spoiler alert…if you didn’t already know, Senator Palpatine rose through the ranks to prominence. In the background he was manipulating something that they call “the outer rim”, or a special group of planets in the galaxy that weren’t part of the “Galactic Republic”. Think of like a foreign interest’s type of thing. Not to long after that war broke out between a group in “the outer rim” and the “Galactic Republic” called the clone wars.
Yes, we’ve got little Anakin Skywalker, emotional little shit bag, and Padme Amidala as the protagonist’s along with young Obi-Wan Kenobi. There’s something to be said about the main political shit going on around the same time and the division it caused amongst the masses though. Basically while the “Clone Wars” were going on you still had senators going “rabble rabble” in one big hall that represented their planet and then Senator Palpatine inching his ass in to the Supreme Chancellor spot…or I guess their version of a president? Anyways slowly but surely, he started to use the war itself as a springboard to slowly limit the powers of the individual citizens, then BAM! Out comes the “Galactic Empire” that we’re all familiar with and the still evermore moody Anakin Skywalker now Darth Vader.
Ok, I think we’re all caught up now. The reason why I say that there was a major division going on here that made me laugh is that this all sounds vaguely familiar. Right now, as it is, we have a group of elites in Washington D.C. that are pretty much dictating what and who we are as individuals along with what we say socially. Take a look at the news I’ll wait. Are you back yet?
Alright, the real big thing that I looked in to as hard as I could was what the main doctrine of the Galactic Republic had as its backbone. I couldn’t find it exactly so I had to pull some crime show forensic shit to figure out what the hell was going on, and why was it so easy for that form of government to be broken up. Well looking at it they did have a “constitution”, but from everything I could find it was basically weak as hell. Point one for America right there.
It was nothing during a time of war for Palpatine to just waltz right in and declare himself the Supreme Chancellor. He still had to divide the senate and get them to argue amongst each other. Cause a little chaos here, question the morals of a specific candidate. Ahem…call in to question the freaking Supreme Chancellor Valurum, the guy before him. There ya go, bad guy in office for the movies to continue.
The part that really started to get me laughing though was the way everything was set up after I started to do my research for this blog. They had almost the exact same set up we did. “Office of the Chancellor”, “Galactic Senate”, “Judicial Department”. If you ask me that kind of sounds like the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court. Well I think that one might be a draw…maybe. Hold up, all the power was easily transferable to the Galactic Senate, because red tape. Yup, they put out all this shit that pretty much made it easy for them to grab power from anyone and everyone they wanted to through bureaucracy. As a matter of fact, Palpatine our good old Sith buddy here added more on to it.
One thing that I’m pretty sure everyone else knows, even though we’ve got a shit ton of red tape going through our own government here it’s damn near impossible to do that from any one of our three branches. They try, they always do, but because of the constitution of the United States of America, ahem, “You will fail!” I’m sorry that was just way to damn easy not to do.
So to say that we’re close to but not quiet like the Star Wars franchise is kind of funny. Yes, we are. We’re not exactly like space traveling ninjas that can do some pretty cool looking Dragon Ball Z stuff, nor are our two governmental systems EXACTLY alike, but we have something that they have and it’s political officials causing both division and derision with in our own society.
Palpatine isn’t just one specific person with in our own in real life society. Hell no! Instead he’s an amalgamation of several different things and groups we have going on right now. Social justice warriors, the ones that want to sit there and tell you that we have to accept the what is told to us by their community because no matter the situation they are right and we are wrong and that’s the way we’ve set it up for, I don’t know, millennia now. There’s the politicians that placate to the exact same kind of bullshit that’s been reiterated by the social justice warriors and those who are from the opposite that lets be honest here kind of issue the same rhetoric and year after year slowly increase government power and their paychecks.
There’s also, and you know I don’t like these folks here, big tech. I’m all for a company growing in the free market. I’m all for it becoming a big conglomerate of sorts. What I’m not for is that company monopolizing the market that it’s in, nor am I for that company not obeying the laws of its country of origin. Oh! Yeah almost forgot, here’s the liberal in me if you want to put it that way, I’m also not for these companies blatantly censoring those of a creed, race, political choice, religion, or country of origin. We should all have freedom of speech and be willing to accept the consequences of our actions no matter what caused them. All of those factors and groups are our Palpatine.
One thing that my ass is definitely going to talk about here is the Galactic Republic a little more. If you take a deeper dive in to the Star Wars franchise, you’ll notice something as well. Doing research about the whole Galactic Republic, and then the Galactic Empire there was a promise that further divided people. The promise of safety.
Granted everyone wants to be safe. Hell, I want to be safe, but there’s something to be said about HOW you are safe. Call me heated now because damn this is going to be a touchy one. Are you anymore safer if you relinquish how you are safe? Are you any safer in your very free mind if you have someone forcibly tell you how to be safe? I’m sorry but my answer is always going to be no. As should yours. The Galactic Republic, much like our own government, slowly eroded its own power through bureaucratic policy after bureaucratic policy. Even in the movies you can blatantly see them do this in the few scenes that they hold in the movies. Hell, one of the most famous movie quotes is “So this is how liberty dies…with thunderous applause.”
I’m sorry but there’s always one sure fire way to be able to get people to commit to that, make them afraid then divide them. We see it play out plenty of times a day here in our own country. The news reports things out of context, or completely false on both sides. Legislatures and other government officials will add more laws to try and cover up what we as a nation had as one of our founding documents. Then the radicals from either side will sit there and either fight against it with their utmost or tell the general population that there needs to be more.
It’s not right. Now there is a flipside to this coin. Militarism. And here’s the little gobblety goop that caused me to take pause and add in Starship Troopers to this whole mess. This whole series started off as a book that was written by Robert A. Heinlein. Don’t ask, I don’t know how to seriously pronounce his name. But I’m pretty sure that not many of my readers will know who the hell that is. I’m pretty sure that my readers would know more about the comical movie that was made in the nineties. I sure as hell didn’t know that there was a book written before the movie.
Now I say “Militarism” because that’s pretty much what Starship Troopers is all about. And it sure as hell mirrors other things that are going on now and days as well. The left has been militarized to form groups like “Antifa”. The right now has groups that won’t start a fight, nor are they racist, but sure as hell will finish a fight like “The Proud Boys”. Don’t get me wrong I have no issues with the proud boys, however I don’t think that their answer is quiet the right one. Some of the things that both groups do that could end up looking like some engagement on “Klendathu”.
Basically, though, in the 1950’s this writer Robert A. Heinlein wrote a sci-fi critique of what he believed was wrong with the U.S. at the time. He’d been stated for “glorified the military…Specifically the P.B.I., Poor Bloody Infantry, the mudfoot who places his frail body between his loved home and the wars desolation-but is rarely appreciated…he has the toughest job of all and should be honored.” Cool so he’s a fan of the military right? Well not so fast there. I, as a veteran of the Army, wouldn’t stand for the bullshit in the movies that he put out.
You’re only a citizen if you’ve served two years in the Starship Troopers military. Only citizens can vote. Only citizens have the right to apply for a license to procreate with their partner. I’m sorry but that would be more towards the right side of things. I can’t name a single military veteran that would actually be cool with that. Yeah democrats getting into our highest position in the executive offices would absolutely mean budget cuts. Oh, and that means that they end up drawing back on forces or start kicking out soldiers for the simplest or pettiest of reasons. No that’s not a way to go ahead and start doing things either.
See the thing about Heilein here is that he had a very crazy view on things. He looked at the way that the U.S. was at the time and thought “hey we need to hand out more ass whoopin’s.” I’m sorry what? Yes, that’s right, the guy who wrote Starship Troopers thought that there wasn’t enough corporal and capital punishment now and days.
Now if you said something like all around I might could get around that if we were talking a little less harsh corporal punishments than used to be passed around back in the day. The women suffrage movement should have been an example for just women, but for everyone. We don’t need a repeat of the “rule of thumb” for the next poor soul that fucks up in a way that’s irredeemable to their partner. No, I’m down with corporal punishment if it’s with less severe crimes than the big ones. You know rape, child molestation, man slaughter, stuff like that. I think that we can all agree that child molestation needs to be more punishable than “three squares and a cot”.
But one thing that we’ve shied away from what we use to be, and it caused us as a nation. I’m not suggesting that we all of a sudden put Rico on the stocks and start whipping him. It was negligible homicide, and he didn’t know what he was doing leave the poor kid alone. No, if you really want to keep people together first you have to start with a set of minds that things need to be more punishable than they are. Go ahead and call the child molester out and sentence him to death. It’s been proven that its more cost effective to our jail system anyways, and who in their right or left mind wouldn’t want to protect their own children?
No people, one less murderer is still one less murderer. Make sure there’s a time period where they do a more in-depth investigation to make sure that we’ve got the right guy. Make sure that there weren’t any false allegations handed forward against the person you say is a child molester. But if you’re caught selling drugs to someone that you know are illegal and could get the person addicted then you should absolutely not be a seamstress getting that “three squares and a cot”. No hell no, but the person’s ass to work, make them take responsibility for what they did. Put their ass to work like we use to with chain gangs, there’s plenty of substantive materials that we could use the jail systems help on producing.
Of course, the libertarian in me is going to cry out…right…about…now! There’s something to be said though about repealing other things away. No direct profit for any given company in regard to the labor put for by the “chain gang”. Give the profit nation wide to those we put to labor, have them reap some sort of reward. You commit to A form of corporal punishment and rehabilitate them at the same time. Win, win.
Now that I’m off of my little pulpit there’s something that goes back to topic here. In Starship Troopers there’s one agreement that I can make with author. Some conflicts have to be resolved by force. One thing that I will absolutely agree and disagree with at the same time. We didn’t need to go to Iraq, but we did need to go to Afghanistan. There were terrorists that were wreaking havoc on the whole of Afghanistan and in order for those people to chose for themselves what and who they want to be we needed to weed that shit out. No, we didn’t go there to do that originally. Yes, we went there to get Osama Bin Laden. But it was something that once we found we couldn’t stand for as a nation.
So yes, I agree that if we have an incursion against us, like 9/11, then we have to retaliate just like we did or what happened in Pearl Harbor. But when we find further injustice and the people cry out, well fuck if they ask us for aide then it’s our responsibility to answer. Hell, no should we be looking for “WMD’s”. We all figured out what the ploy was there real quick. Yes, they had a dictator that was gassing them pretty much every day. But the responsibility belongs to those countries around them to take refugee’s and protect them.
So, there’s absolutely an answer to all this division we have…and yeah, we see it all the time in our media. We have to sit on our high horse as a nation and as a people and first cut the division bullshit and then stop being like “Star Wars” or “Starship Troopers” and agree to disagree. I parrot this bullshit all day long and damn near every freaking blog. We need the third party, libertarians, to go ahead and help things along so that the two warring political parties we have right now don’t divide and conquer us. We see this all the time in our movies and books. We have a choice, do we still want looting, rioting, and others reaching across the isle to call each other names and censor them…Or do we want to be like Palpatine and start the first “Galactic Empire” and make everyone fear us?

40 of the Best Villains in Literature
Villains are the best. We may not love them in our lives, but they’re often the best part of our literature—on account of their clear power, their refusal of social norms, and most importantly, their ability to make stories happen. After all, if everyone was always nice and good and honest all the time, literature probably wouldn’t even exist.
To that end, below are a few of my favorites from the wide world of literary villainy. But what exactly does “best” mean when it comes to bad guys (and gals)? Well, it might mean any number of things here: most actually terrifying, or most compelling, or most well-written, or most secretly beloved by readers who know they are supposed to be rooting for the white hats but just can’t help it. It simply depends on the villain. Think of these as noteworthy villains, if it clarifies things.
This is not an exhaustive list, of course, and you are more than invited to nominate your own favorite evildoers in the comments section. By the way, for those of you who think that great books can be spoiled—some of them might be below. After all, the most villainous often take quite a few pages to fully reveal themselves.
Mitsuko, Quicksand, Junichiro Tanizaki
The brilliance of Mitsuko (and the brilliance of this novel) is such that, even by the end, you’re not sure how much to despise her. She is such an expert manipulator, such a re-threader of the truth, that she is able to seduce everyone in her path (read: not only Sonoko but Sonoko’s husband) and get them to like it. Including the reader, of course. In the end, Sonoko is still so devoted to her that the grand tragedy of her life is the fact that Mitsu did not allow her to die alongside her.
Mr. Hyde, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson
Because the very worst villain is . . . get this . . . actually inside you. Also, you just fell asleep one time and when you woke up it was your evil id and not you? We’ve heard that one before. (So has Buffy.)
Infertility, The Children of Men, P. D. James
Sure, Xan is also a villain in this novel. But the real, big-picture villain, the thing that causes everything to dissolve, and people to start christening their kittens and pushing them around in prams, has to be the global disease that left all the men on earth infertile.
The shark, Jaws, Peter Benchley
A villain so villainous that (with the help of Steven Spielberg) it spawned a wave of shark paranoia among beach-goers. In fact, Benchley, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, was so horrified at the cultural response to his work that he became a shark conservationist later in life.
The kid, The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein
Take, take, take. This kid is the actual worst.
Professor Moriarty, “The Final Problem,” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A criminal mastermind— “the Napoleon of Crime,” as Holmes puts it—and the only person to ever give the good consulting detective any real trouble (other than himself). Though after countless adaptations, we now think of Moriarty as Holmes’s main enemy, Doyle really only invented him as a means to kill his hero, and he isn’t otherwise prominent in the series. Moriarty has become bigger than Moriarty.
Mrs. Danvers, Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier
The housekeeper so devoted to her dead ex-mistress that she’s determined to keep her memory alive—by goading her boss’s new wife to jump out of the window to her death. That’s one way to do it, I suppose.
Vanity, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
You could argue that it’s Harry who corrupts Dorian, and James who stalks and tries to murder him, but the real source of all this young hedonist’s problems is his own self-obsession. Sometimes I like to think about what this novel would be like if someone wrote it today, with Dorian as a social media star. . .
Uriah Heep, David Copperfield, Charles Dickens
Few villains are quite so aggressively ugly as Uriah Heep (even the name! Dickens did not go in much for subtlety). When we first meet him, he is described as a “cadaverous” man, “who had hardly any eyebrows, and no eyelashes, and eyes of a red-brown, so unsheltered and unshaded, that I remember wondering how he went to sleep. He was high-shouldered and bony; dressed in decent black, with a white wisp of a neckcloth; buttoned up to the throat; and had a long, lank, skeleton hand.” Some Dickens scholars apparently think that Heep was based on Hans Christian Andersen, in which case, mega burn—unless Andersen was into heavy metal.
The Grand Witch, The Witches, Roald Dahl
As “the most evil woman in creation,” she is on a mission to torture and kill as many children as possible, and often uses murder as a focusing device in meetings. She’s also kind of brilliant—I mean, murdering children by turning them into animals their parents want to exterminate? I have to say, that’s smart.
Cathy Ames, East of Eden, John Steinbeck
Cathy Ames is cold as ice—a sociopath who had to learn as a child how to mimic feelings to get by—but soon also learns how easy it is to manipulate, destroy lives, and murder people to amuse herself. Apparently all this is available to her because of her remarkable beauty. In the end, she has a single feeling of remorse and promptly kills herself.
Mr. Rochester, Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë
That’s right, I said it. Mired in self-pity! Sullen and annoying! Dresses up as a gypsy to mess with Jane’s mind! Keeps his first wife locked in the attic! Thinks he can marry a nice girl like Jane anyway! Gaslights her constantly! Whatever.
Zenia, The Robber Bride, Margaret Atwood
In Atwood’s retelling of the Grimm fairy tale “The Robber Bridegroom,” an evil temptress named Zenia steals the partners of three women (among many, one presumes). Roz, Charis, and Tony, however, use their mutual hurt and hatred to form a friendship—and unpack the many lies and revisions of herself Zenia has offered to each of them. But I can’t really put it better than Lorrie Moore did in a 1993 review of the novel:
Oddly, for all her inscrutable evil, Zenia is what drives this book: she is impossibly, fantastically bad. She is pure theater, pure plot. She is Richard III with breast implants. She is Iago in a miniskirt. She manipulates and exploits all the vanities and childhood scars of her friends (wounds left by neglectful mothers, an abusive uncle, absent dads); she grabs at intimacies and worms her way into their comfortable lives, then starts swinging a pickax. She mobilizes all the wily and beguiling art of seduction and ingratiation, which she has been able to use on men, and she directs it at women as well. She is an autoimmune disorder. She is viral, self-mutating, opportunistic (the narrative discusses her in conjunction with AIDS, salmonella and warts). She is a “man-eater” run amok. Roz thinks: “Women don’t want all the men eaten up by man-eaters; they want a few left over so they can eat some themselves.”
Becky Sharp, Vanity Fair, William Makepeace Thackeray
A cynical, manipulative, intelligent beauty with many artistic talents and a premium can-do attitude at her disposal. You’ve never met a more dedicated hustler. By the end, the novel seems to judge her pretty harshly—but I’ve always loved her.
Henry, The Secret History, Donna Tartt
Oh, Henry—brooding, brilliant, bone-tired Henry. Some in the Lit Hub office argued that it was Julian who was the real villain in Donna Tartt’s classic novel of murder and declension, but I give Henry more credit than that. His villainy is in his carefulness, his coldness, his self-preservation at all costs. He is terrifying because we all know him—or someone who could oh-so-easily slide into his long overcoat, one winter’s night.
Hubris, almost all of literature but let’s go with Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton
Isn’t it awesome? We can just make dinosaurs! There is no foreseeable problem with this. We can totally handle it.
Arturo, Geek Love, Katherine Dunn
Here’s another novel with multiple candidates for Supreme Villain—should it be the Binewski parents, who purposefully poison themselves and their children in order to populate their freak show? Or should it be Mary Lick, a sort of modern millionaire version of Snow White’s Evil Queen, who pays pretty women to disfigure themselves? I think we have to go with Arturo the Aqua Boy, the beflippered narcissist who grows into a cult leader, encouraging his followers to slowly pare away their body parts in a search for “purity.” (But for the record, it’s all of the above.)
Dr. Frankenstein, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley
It’s true that the monster is the murderer in Shelley’s classic novel—and also, you know, a monster—but it’s Dr. Frankenstein who decided he had to play God and build a creature in his own image without thought to the possible ramifications! Shelley treats him as a tragic figure, but that only makes him a much more interesting villain.
Hannibal Lecter, Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, etc., Thomas Harris
Made iconic by Anthony Hopkins, of course, but made brilliant and terrifying—a serial killing psychiatrist cannibal, come on—by Thomas Harris. “They don’t have a name for what he is.” Also, he has six fingers—though they’re on his left hand, so it couldn’t have been him who killed Mr. Montoya. Still, it puts him in rare company.
Captain Ahab, Moby-Dick, Herman Melville
Did you think the villain was the whale? The villain is not the whale—it’s the megalomaniac at the helm.
Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, William Shakespeare
The villainess of choice for every man who has ever claimed his wife made him do it. But I’ve always found Lady Macbeth more interesting than Macbeth himself—she’s the brains behind the operation, not to mention the ambition. Her sleepwalking scene is one of the best and most famous of all of Shakespeare’s plays. Even this makes me shiver:
Out, damned spot! out, I say!—One: two: why, then, ’tis time to do’t.—Hell is murky!—Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?—Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him.
Sand, The Woman in the Dunes, Kobo Abe
It may be the devious villagers who trick the poor etymologist into the sand pit, but it is the sand itself that is the main antagonist in this slim and wonderful novel. The sand that keeps coming, and must be shoveled back. The sand that constantly threatens to swallow everything: first the man, then the woman, then the village—though one assumes the villagers would replace him before that happened. Sand.
Suburban Ennui, Revolutionary Road, Richard Yates
In everyone’s favorite horror novel about America in the ’50s, onetime bohemians Frank and April Wheeler move to the ‘burbs, and find it. . . extremely stifling. But it’s not the suburbs exactly but the Wheelers’ inability to understand one another, their fear, their creeping, cumulative despair, that are the forces of destruction here.
“The book was widely read as an antisuburban novel, and that disappointed me,” Yates said in a 1972 interview.
The Wheelers may have thought the suburbs were to blame for all their problems, but I meant it to be implicit in the text that that was their delusion, their problem, not mine. . . I meant it more as an indictment of American life in the 1950s. Because during the fifties there was a general lust for conformity all over this country, by no means only in the suburbs—a kind of blind, desperate clinging to safety and security at any price, as exemplified politically in the Eisenhower administration and the Joe McCarthy witch-hunts. Anyway, a great many Americans were deeply disturbed by all that—felt it to be an outright betrayal of our best and bravest revolutionary spirit—and that was the spirit I tried to embody in the character of April Wheeler. I meant the title to suggest that the revolutionary road of 1776 had come to something very much like a dead end in the fifties.
David Melrose, Never Mind, Edward St. Aubyn
Fathers don’t get much worse than David Melrose: cruel, brutal, and snobbish, a man who enjoyed humiliating his wife, who raped his young son, and who seemed to doom all those close to him to a life of pain. You could also argue that the British Aristocracy is the villain in the Patrick Melrose books, but . . . David is definitely worse (if slightly less all-encompassing).
Tom Ripley, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Patricia Highsmith
Here’s a villain you can’t help but root for—I mean, sort of. You feel his pain as he tries to insinuate himself into the life of the man he so admires (and perhaps loves), and as he is first welcomed and then pushed away. Less so when he murders his beloved and assumes his identity—but somehow, as you read, you find yourself holding your breath around every corner, hoping he will escape yet again.
Rufus Weylin, Kindred, Octavia Butler
As slaveowners go, Rufus isn’t the worst (his father might rank) but he isn’t the best, either. He’s selfish and ignorant, and (like most men of the time) a brutal racist and misogynist, who doesn’t mind raping women as long as they act like they like it. Actually, the fact that he thinks he’s better than his father actually makes him worse. That said, the real antagonist in this novel might actually be the unknown and unexplained force that keeps transporting Dana from her good life in 1976 California to a Maryland slave plantation in 1815. What’s that about?
Nurse Ratched, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey
Big Nurse rules the patients of the asylum ward with an iron fist. She is addicted to order and power, and can be quite cruel in commanding it. In comes McMurphy, our hero, who wants to undercut her. He does undercut her, in fact, a number of times—but when he goes too far, she has him lobotomized. The end! I know Ratched is meant to be evil, and it’s supposed to be depressing that she wins, but I can’t help but sort of like the fact that after a man chokes her half to death and rips off her shirt in an attempt to humiliate her (because no one with breasts can have power, you see!), she simply has him put down.
The Prison-industrial complex, The Mars Room, Rachel Kushner
Who is really the villain in Rachel Kushner’s most recent novel? It can’t be Romy; serving a life sentence for killing a man who was stalking her. It can’t be the man himself, who didn’t quite understand what he was doing. It can’t be any of the prisoners, nor any of the guards in particular. Nor is this a book with no villain, because the pulsing sense of injustice is too great. It is the whole thing, every aspect, of the American prison system—meant to catch you and bleed you and keep you and bring you back—that is the true villain in this novel (and often, in real life).
Big Brother, 1984, George Orwell
Of course it’s O’Brien who does most of the dirty work—but it’s Big Brother (be he actual person or nebulous invented concept) that really, um, oversees the evil here.
Patrick Bateman, American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis
He’s a shallow, narcissistic, greedy investment banker, and also a racist, a misogynist, an anti-Semite and a homophobe, and also a sadist and a murderer and a cannibal and Huey Lewis devotee. He’s also weirdly pathetic. Can’t really get any worse than that as a person—but as a character, he’s endlessly entertaining.
The General, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Gabriel García Márquez
It’s José Ignacio Saenz de la Barra who is the most bloodthirsty, but the unnamed General (of the Universe) who is the most compelling villain in this novel: an impossibly long-lived tyrant who has borderline-magical control over the populace, and even the landscape, whose roses open early because, tired of darkness, he has declared the time changed; who sells away the sea to the Americans. He is desperately unhappy; he considers himself a god. Luckily, we get to spend almost the entire novel within his twisting brain.
Humbert Humbert, Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov
The genius of old Hum is how compelling he is—that is, despite the horrible thing he spends the entire novel doing (kidnapping a young girl whose mother he has murdered, driving her around the country and coaxing her into sexual acts, self-flagellating and self-congratulating in equal measure), you are charmed by him, half-convinced, even, by his grand old speeches about Eros and the power of language. In the end, of course, no amount of fancy prose style is enough to make you forget that he’s a murderer and worse, but for this reader, it’s pure pleasure getting there.
Ridgeway, The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead
The slave-hunting Ridgeway, Whitehead writes, “was six and a half feet tall, with the square face and thick neck of a hammer. He maintained a serene comportment at all times but generated a threatening atmosphere, like a thunderhead that seems far away but then is suddenly overhead with a loud violence.” He’s a little more interesting and intelligent than a simple brute—in part due to that sidekick of his—which only makes him more frightening as a character. Tom Hardy is a shoo-in for the adaptation.
Annie Wilkes, Misery, Stephen King
Listen: Annie Wilkes is a fan. She’s a big fan. She loves Paul Sheldon’s novels about Misery Chastain, and she is devastated to discover—after rescuing Sheldon from a car wreck—that he has killed off her beloved character. Things do not then go well for Paul, because as it turns out, Annie is already a seasoned serial killer who is very handy (read: murderous) with household objects.
The Republic of Gilead, The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
The government that has taken control of America in the world of Atwood’s classic dystopia is a fundamentalist theocracy whose leaders have eliminated the boundary between church and state—and worse, have twisted religious principles and political power in an attempt to utterly subjugate all women, erasing their identities and allowing them to exist only so far as they may be of use to the state. It is super fucked up and exactly what I worry about in a country where fundamentalists have any among of political power.
The Earth, The Broken Earth series, N. K. Jemisin
It’s pretty hard to fight back when the thing you’re fighting is the earth itself, which punishes those who walk upon it with extreme, years-long “seasons” of dramatic and deadly climate change. Ah, Evil Earth!
Iago, Othello, William Shakespeare
The worst villain is the one who knows you best—the one you might even love. The scariest motive is the lack of one—what Coleridge called Iago’s “motiveless malignity.” The most interesting villain is the one who has even more lines than the titular hero. He is a fantastic villain, a dangerous trickster, whose character has stumped (and intrigued) critics for centuries.
Judge Holden, Blood Meridian, Cormac McCarthy
Possibly the most terrifying character in modern literature (or any literature?), Glanton’s deputy is over six feet tall and completely hairless. More importantly, despite the fact that he might be a genius, he inflicts senseless and remorseless violence wherever he goes. The man murders (and, it is suggested, rapes) children and throws puppies to their doom. He might actually be the devil—or simply evil itself. He never sleeps, the judge. He is dancing, dancing. He says that he will never die.
Slavery, Beloved, Toni Morrison
This entire novel is based on a single idea: that a loving mother might murder her baby daughter to save her from life as a slave. Sure, the slavers are bad (and the schoolteacher is particularly chilling). Sure, you could make an argument that the vengeful spirit Beloved’s presence is destructive, splintering further an already fractured family. But these are only symptoms, in this the Great American Novel, of the Great American Sin.
Satan, The Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri
