❤️ (favorite romantic relationship) and 🥉(three podcasts you would recommend to get someone into podcasts) for the ask game!
❤️ (favorite romantic relationship): sayer/hale <3 idk just something cute and fucked up about a horror story about a murder ai whose only feelings are anger and annoyance growing Fond of its human test subject and vessel because of the mortifying ordeal of having to Depend on another person and seeing oneself in the other Honorable mention to arthur/john from malevolent podcast for the same reasons. those reasons being the inherent homoeroticism of sharing one's body with another man
🥉(three podcasts you would recommend to get someone into podcasts) : my basis for recommending shows to ppl new to podcasting is that they gotta be short, both in minutes per ep, and number of eps so it won't be intimidating; the story be relatively straightforward and easy to follow; and that the voices are distinct/there aren't too many of em in a pod 1. Mina's story: cuz the whole thing is so short like u can literally finish it in less than half an hour and it will make you Feel so much. it's a good introduction to the epistolary/audio diary format so common to pods. it exemplifies how for most pods, the plot is emotional continuity. like, the story begins with the mc not wanting to face the present and let herself love cuz of grief so she escapes into the future. where she ends up in a safe space where she feels comfortable letting herself love again ;-; also i think like if you're first getting into pods, you'll be surprised at how casually queer they are and i think this pod is a good intro to that 2. Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke: the fictional radio advice format is easy to follow for ppl new into pods cuz those are a real thing. but the callers being monsters is enough of a twist to distinguish it from those irl radio shows/nonfiction. the short stand alone eps are easy to jump straight into. and it's just very sincere and wholesome and queer in a way i don't see as much in other media. Also, everything i said abt this show is also equally applicable to monstrous agonies 3. Spines: good intro to how podcasts tend to do horror cuz the spooks is more from really good vibes and a sense of aesthetics and making the listener imagine indescribable things, rather than just jumpscares and scary murder monsters and ghouls trying to kill. also, the queer love story, the themes of community, and the really hopeful ending, exemplify how horror pods are very good at balancing dark dreary settings with hope and optimism

one of the inherent problems wrt The Dynamic is that it is a dichotomy and all dichotomies are inherently flawed BUT also the tendency to attach associated tropes to the ones that are actually enumerated as part of the core of The Dynamic (ie the sweaterboy being The Nice One for some reason), and furthermore the view of the sweaterboy/absolute nightmare descriptions as being descriptions of actions or personality types, rather than motivations or worldviews
(also: neglect of all the other possibilities of The Dynamic. can we not talk about how it’s equally moving and glorious when platonic? what about poly ships, and how sometimes you can have multiple characters who are absolutely all sharing and alternating between elements of the two aspects of the Dynamic?)
as far as i’m concerned what the spirit of the dynamic really, ultimately is? is just about characters who have sought safety via gating off some part of their inner self, in either or both of those two ways, finding balance and support from each other to express themselves more fully, and being brave enough to be vulnerable. to link in another Internet Phrase, the dynamic is literally about accepting in whatever way one needs to that to achieve the rewards of being loved you must undergo the mortifying ordeal of being known. that, i think, is what the real deep-down appeal is, and why it has always been and been framed as a fundamentally Queer Thing. basically I think that like most lenses for interpretation of media in general, it has definite value but always needs to be complicated and critically examined
and one of the other inherent problems is that every time I look at the original article I feel like I’m going to shrivel up out of sheer secondhand embarrassment

Kickstarter!! I’ve been super anxious about submitting to the mortifying ordeal of being known by posting this on Tumblr, but I think it’s time. My partner and I are a week into our Kickstarter to fund our Alabama based queer literary magazine. It’s focused on amplifying queer voices in Alabama, and raising awareness of what it means to be queer and southern at the same time. This project means so much to me as a (mostly) closeted queer person in the south. It’s a breath of fresh air to have the opportunity to be involved in creating a project like this. We currently have three weeks left in the Kickstarter and we are just over 1/3 funded, so we’re making great progress, but we still need help, so I’m sharing here. Please feel free to share with anyone who you think might be interested, and donate if you feel so inclined! I would be happy to make a moodboard, playlist, poem, etc., or do a tarot reading for anyone who donates and would like to request one. ANYONE can donate, you do not have to be from Alabama. If you ARE from and/or currently living in Alabama and would like to be involved further, keep an eye on our social media platforms, because we will opening up submissions very soon! Thank you!

random ofmd thought: I love that Stede is so cringe.
He's just. Awkward. Ridiculous. Unapologetically weird at all times and he never gets any cooler. Every episode has at least one Stede moment that causes me physical pain and I love that.
Because usually, if a character is this embarrassing, their arc is about learning to be less so, to be like anyone else, to be more normal, and Stede never does. He learns to be more confident, yes, but he never stops unapologetically being his awkward self, and that's so good to see? He's fine the way he is? He doesn't have to become less himself, he just has to learn how to own it better and that's so healing to see

A brief conversation I had with @mikimeiko on their lovely meta about the motive of loss and abandonment made me think about miscommunication some more, and how horrible Calico Jack was to Stede.
When Stede meets Calico Jack for the first time this is what he says to him:
Tumblr media
Who's the big gal?
Off to a terrible start, and it only goes downhill from there.
As others have pointed out, this is a very mean thing to say in general and absolutely unacceptable to say to a queer man in particular, and Ed knows that. He's trying to do damage control

My #1 post of 2022
oh but I adore how everyone in this stupid pirate show is just a guy
I haven't seen ppl talk about it much but. the absolute lack of shredded abs. people show tummy and cleavage and there's not the barest hint of muscle definition anywhere
obviously some of them are very fit but it never leaves "works a physically demanding job and happens to be naturally thin" territory
and guys are fat! guys have bellies and rounded shoulders and chubby cheeks and imperfect teeth and thinning hair and are styled weirdly (that's a whole different post but the crew especially look so unprofessional styled it's great)
and they are still all hot! they are hot and desirable and find each other hot and desirable and I love that
I love to see it! nobody in this show looks like they had a personal trainer. and not just the side characters, not just a token fat guy - obv Taika Waititi is the most beautiful man you've ever seen and that little bit of tummy pudge spilling out of his crop top made us all lose our collective minds. but it's everyone else too; and it's not the extend of it either. no other show would have let black pete within 10 feet of a romance arc, much less been this sweet and sincere about it
this show is so comfortable with the human body in all it's glorious imperfection and I am in love with it
