No, Bashir and O’Brien are two good people doing the right thing of their own independent volition. They were not under direct orders to do that. They did not involve the chain of command in doing that. It was not an official mission coming from Starfleet Command.

Meanwhile, Section 31 is an intelligence agency born of an ambiguously phrased section of Starfleet Charter, and has been embedded in the very fabric of the Federation ever since its inception. Starfleet did not order them to develop the virus, maybe, but they benefited from it, took no formal action to stop them, never apologized for it, and did not even have the decency to release the cure spontaneously, as an institution, to the Link.

Admitting that the Federation fucked up majorly in this (and many other) instance does not take anything away from their potential to do better. But they did, very much, fuck up, and never remedied that.

I've seen several cases where people are like "what happens if we meet aliens, and then they see Independence Day or War of the Worlds?"

But nobody seems to think about what happens when the aliens see Star Trek.

The aliens are gonna see these shows made by a bunch of humans but they put putty on some of the humans to make them look like what we think aliens might look like, and we told stories about how those aliens would be our friends and we'd explore the universe with them and find more aliens and try to be friends with them too!

Yeah sometimes they'd be mean and we'd fight but we'd always try to avoid it and even if we fought we'd try to be friends later.

We basically created 900 episodes of a child's drawing of a stick figure of a human and a stick figure of a grey alien holding hands and "best friends" written in crayon.

DS9 "The Begotten"

The main story of this season 5 episode is - Odo gets his shapeshifting powers back, after the Founders took them away in season 4's finale "Broken Link."

So this is what they did to make this happen.

Quark sells Odo a baby Changeling they'd only just discovered. Odo realises he's going to have to do some parenting. There are arguments with Dr Mora Pel, the Bajoran scientist who tortured Baby Odo when the latter was just a gravy stain on a lab bench.

The Baby Changeling begins to learn ... then they start dying, and Odo can't save it. It dies, but it restores Odo's morphogenic matrix, and Odo becomes a blob again.

Only ...

Well, two things. One, they did not have Section 31 just yet.

And two ... they did not have the morphogenic virus story yet - that was to come in season 7.

However ...

During season 7, when they revealed the existence of the virus, they pinpointed the exact date when Odo had been infected.

The date, in season 4, when Odo had visited Earth.

Which meant that Odo had been a carrier of the virus during "The Begotten" in season 5.

And Odo had passed on the morphogenic virus to the dying baby Changeling.

He'd unwittingly killed the closest thing to his own child.

- Despite not directly featuring in DS9: "When It Rains...", Sloan was referred to several times in that episode's first draft script. Bashir and O'Brien started to suspect he had run a burn-back on them after they managed to trace it to the Department of Cartography at Federation Headquarters, also discovering that the culprit had the screen name "W.G.", which Bashir believed stood for "Wendell Greer". Moments after the burn-back caused their consoles to short out, the pair agreed that, if Sloan had indeed done the burn-back, he now knew, much to his dissatisfaction, that they knew everything about the Section 31 conspiracy to create the morphogenic virus that was currently inflicting the Changelings.

back on my Changeling bullshit (when AREN’T I), so have a headcanon.

If you’re going to correct my fictional alien biology with real-world science please be aware that I’m a creative writing person and don’t care.

so like every cell of a Changeling’s morphogenic matrix is capable of being a sensory organ, and control over sensory capabilities becomes stronger as general shapeshifting ability does. a very very newly formed Changeling might be completely insensate while one at around Odo’s developmental level might have senses that are slightly sharper than those of your average human.

In situations where a Changeling is ill in a way that limits their control over their matrix, i.e. the Section 31 virus or whatever the Link infected Odo with that one time to bring him home, this could lead to sudden hypo/hypersensitivities, or senses just completely disappearing. like, complete blindness for a moment, then everything suddenly being WAY TOO BRIGHT but people’s voices all sound muffled, then the slightest pressure causing waves of intense pain.

Feel free to use this idea in fanfics or whatever if you want. I think there’s definitely some creative potential here

A couple points I want to clarify:

Yes, I know it's Section 31 who made the morphogenic virus. Starfleet still gives them the resources to do all their shady dealings though, and they believe they're doing what the Federation needs them to do. And I stand by it being extremely fucked-up that this was an option they made available to themselves, let alone one they chose to take.

I do think the Breen are boring, but only because they were not properly explored! If a good writer/team of writers (I don't trust many who are writing on Trek in this era with this) took the Breen and fleshed them out, I'd be rapt! I wanna know more about them! And I was disappointed that DS9, famous for adding needed nuance to previously one-note antagonistic races, and who also gave us the Dominion, who I was defending up there, gave us the Breen and didn't develop them.

Also, I'm not saying people can't enjoy the Breen and their dialup internet speech! If they spark joy for you, that's great! I'm just saying that it is really unfair to hate on the Dominion and ignore the nuance they get (which was not complete, granted, but nothing is perfect) while the Breen are little more than set-dressing by comparison.

Entirely too many people in the Deep Space 9 Fandom: hating on the Dominion like they don't have valid/relatable motivations for the horrible things they did

Me, staring into the camera despite not having real eyes: The Breen. They're just ... just there. They add nothing to the conflict, they make their unintelligible noises, they occasionally kill someone we don't care about, we barely learn anything about them as a species. Why even are the Breen?

Since she's my current blorbo hyperfixation I've decided I'm going to talk more about my Star Trek oc, Allira. I've made a couple art posts about her already but I was sort of vague in them so this is where I'm going to talk about her :)

I've already given the vague idea in the previous posts, but to go over it again: Ensign Allira is a Vorta who defected from the Dominion shortly after the end of the Dominion War. She's currently on her third clone, with the first having been terminated while researching the morphogenic virus (remember that time the founders ordered all the doctors be executed and activate their clones? Allira 1 was one of them), and the second being terminated for recklessness and a dash of insubordination. After that, Allira 3 pretty quickly got the fuck out of dodge, stealing a ship and dropping off her Jem'Hadar to starve somewhere.

After about a year fucking about in the Alpha Quadrant, doing some soul searching and otherwise figuring out what the fuck to do with herself, she decided that her best bet was to take her medical expertise to Starfleet and pray. Fast forward a few years, and here she is as a junior-grade Ensign, freshly out of the academy and horribly paranoid that everyone hates her.

Her first posting is to the steamrunner-class Dover, a patrol ship that spends her first two weeks on the job docked at Deep Space Nine for repairs. She doesn't take this especially well. She uses the time to do what she can to get to know her new roommate, Ensign (senior-grade) Rāphen Calos, a command-track prodigy- Red Squad and everything- that Section 31 seem rather taken with. Not that either of them know that, of course. Raph is a friend's oc that afaik they haven't written about anywhere but that they have posted about here and here. (They also posted about Allira here)

Raph and Allira have had a... rocky friendship. They're trying, but they're both incredibly bad at it. However, over their first few months working together they did manage to cultivate a friendship and start opening up to each other better, helping each other to relax a little and not get killed by accidentally antagonising people. Then they got sent on a mission together to one of Bajor's moons to investigate a distress signal from a mining colony.

Split off from the rest of their crew, who at that point were investigating a distress signal from a ship that just left that colony, they found themselves alone in the dark, empty corridors. Allira, confident that she'd be able to withstand whatever airborne toxins there might be there, took her respirator off to better know what they were dealing with (I like flavouring the Vorta's resistance to poisons so that they can also taste and smell them more distinctly). This turned out to be a mistake when she started hearing voices, and Raph noticed her eye starting to turn black. Just as they started panicking, an assimilated mining drone showed up to start threatening them.

Now Allira doesn't respond well to threats. When threatened with termination by the borg, her response was not to comply. Her response was to threaten to terminate herself first so they'd lose their bargaining chip, which she only doubled down on when it turned out the borg specifically needed her medical training. In response, the borg cut Raph's arm off to force her to come to the medical bay anyway.

Details time- these borg were relegated to using airborne nanoprobes because there was an error in their code that caused the assimilation to fail and just tear apart the bodies of those they tried to assimilate. Raph and Allira (and the crew of the Dover) still don't actually know what the borg were doing this far from the Delta Quadrant. Going back a bit, recall that Allira is in the middle of being assimilated.

Once Raph was stable, they made a break for it and got to a ward where Allira could irradiate herself to disable the nanoprobes. As soon as the borg noticed, they sped up the assimilation to try to kill her. Rather than let herself be assimilated, Allira tried to activate her termination implant, which was too damaged by the assimilation to work. The irradiation started, and both of them blacked out.

Two weeks later, Allira woke up in a sick bay with injuries to the entire left side of her body, including throat injuries severe enough that she couldn't speak. While recovering from her injuries and with remnants of the collective now fading from her mind, she and Raph have been given some lovely medical leave on Bajor so they can finally have some time off to relax and completely fail to healthily process how gay they are for each other (Raph refuses to open up or wind down and Allira is horribly paranoid about everyone around her, it's such a disaster of a combination)

Okay, bear with me here. Think about this: Garak is back on Cardassia and still an outcast. Someone spread the news that he was Obsidian Order, so he’s quite hated among his neighbors and eking out a lonely existence in the ruins.

Then he gets a letter from Ezri Dax telling him Julian Bashir is dead. Garak loses his mind.

Some oblique hints in the letter suggest Bashir was killed by Section 31 (they didn’t take kindly to how he obtained the cure for the morphogenic virus), not in an accident as it was made to look. So Garak, home but still surrounded by people who fear him, decides he’s going to get vengeance for the one person who ever truly cared about him for himself (excepting perhaps Mila).

He is going to bring down Section 31. People are going to pay for Bashir’s death, and he means for them to pay with their lives.

This could end a couple of different ways. Garak could spend a couple years on this quest, succeed, and then stop by DS9 on his way back to Cardassia. Section 31 has been exposed and the whole Federation is appalled. Garak personally killed anyone involved in Julian’s death, but he still feels empty. Ezri finds him; they remember Julian and she guides him on the first tentative steps to letting go of his grief and moving on. He realizes there is nothing for him on Cardassia, so he stays on DS9 and opens a shop again.

Alternately, when Garak is about to die on his quest, he gets unexpected aid... from Julian Bashir, who faked his own death with a clone. (Why? Either he was determined to take down Section 31 himself, or he knew they were coming for him and this was the only way out.) He sent a letter ahead of time with enough clues to let Garak know, but Cardassia’s communications system is unreliable and the letter never arrived. Or maybe that was someone screwing with Garak, who knows? They then bring about the downfall of Section 31 together, decide there’s really no point in being apart anymore, and go off into the sunset to live happily... er, bickeringly ever after.

Section 31 is actually a part of Bashirs fantasy, he created it then created the morphogenic virus himself. Since he could not live with his actions, his mind created an alternative version where he didn’t do it.

NOT SURE WHAT HE EXPECTED.   Chris has a vague recollection of Waylon Park.  the whole murkoff incident at Mount Massive is just one more assignment filed away -- they’d been concerned about the Morphogenic Engines relation to the virus outbreaks, but there’d been no connection.  There’d been plenty of work regardless -- patients who needed to be safely escorted out, patients that had to be SUBDUED.  And then there had been WAYLON.  ( The WHISTLEBLOWER. )  Chris had spoken briefly to him, but the shock of the situation meant he was in better hands with the EMTs.  And Chris had to get to work. 

That’s been -- what, a year ?  The better part of two, maybe.   The call comes in on his home phone -- backed up and buried under the numerous other NON - WORK related messages he receives while he’s out of the country.  A nervous thank you and request to meet up for coffee.  It doesn’t take long to set up the meeting, a quick text sent back instead of CALLING with an explanation of ‘hey, it’s chris.  I just got your message, I’ve been overseas’ etc, etc.  Polite.  Explains he’d love to meet up, maybe tomorrow ?   He’s just got back and first things first he needs a shower.   Complete with a cute little smiling face.  

The cafe is one he’s been to before.   It’s not that far from the apartment, and he ends up munching on a muffin 20 minutes early because he’d had nothing better to do.  ( That’s just how DOWN TIME is for him.   Spent trying to figure out how to fill the void of time before the next mission. )  He recognizes Waylon immediately but DAMMIT he doesn’t remember him being this cute.    To be fair, between being so occupied with the assignment, and waylon being covered in blood and dressed in one of the inmate uniforms ... chris hadn’t really LOOKED.  

He’s definitely looking now.  He breaks into a grin, waves.   “ Hey, Waylon, right?  Good to see you’re doing better ... I’m really glad you reached out. “   Not that Chris needs a THANK YOU for the work he does ... but it’s reassuring to see the RIPPLES of good you put into the world, now and then.   The reminder that the bad doesn’t go on forever, that his touch on the lives of others is FELT, that it’s effective.  “ I followed the murkoff case as closely as I could while I was working ... hope they got what was gunning for them ... can I buy you a coffee ? “

All Medicine Is Energy Medicine

We live in a world of energy. A world that is whizzing with electrons and other atomic and subatomic particles. The particles which make up our universe are the same stuff that make up our bodies. All things, whether they are an herb picked from your garden, a crystal from the earth, or a pharmaceutical drug have their own energy signature and vibrational frequency. The difference between these things has to do with their effects upon the body’s energetic field. These effects usually work on several levels, although some therapeutics have their primary effect on a particular level. These levels include the physical, or the seemingly solid form we call our bodies, the etheric, that aspect of our energetic field closest to our physical form, or the emotional level. A disease or “dis-ease” state can begin on any of these levels. Although, it is dis-ease in our physical form about which most of us are concerned. Before a disease manifests in physical form, there is usually a disruption on a higher frequency level such as the etheric or emotional. Since all of these fields are connected to make the whole you, effecting one level will affect all others.

             We know that all things have energetic fields; vibrational signatures that are uniquely their own. Thus, a human, a plant, a virus, a pollen granule or a rock all have their own frequencies. Physics tells us that these fields interact in various ways. The two main ways fields interact are through resonance, or the enhancing and affirming of one frequency by another and dissonance, the discordant or disruptive interaction of two fields. When a virus or bacteria enters your body, its vibrational field interacts with your field, usually in a dissonant way. This dissonance disrupts your own energetic field and this disruption is translated to the physical body as dis-ease. Any dissonant field can cause dis-ease, whether it’s a virus, allergen, or high voltage electric power line. In contrast, a resonant frequency can be life affirming and create balance within your body.

             As mentioned earlier, therapies can have their primary effect at specific levels. For example, acupuncture works on the energy meridians that run along the surface of the body and have connections into various organs and tissues. These meridians are not completely physical and not completely etheric, but a mix of the two. They are pathways for this higher vibration energy to affect the tissues. Acupuncture points are places along these conduits at which the energy can be most readily accessed. Tissue biopsies of acupuncture points show morphological differences from surrounding tissues. Also, these points have a lower resistance to electrical flow than does the tissue around them. Thus, energy can readily flow from point to point.

             Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) works more upon the bio-electrical aspect of the body. The microcurrent is a 1/1,000,000 (one millionth) of an amp and is similar to the electrical current that our body produces. Our nerves and tissues produce bio-electrical current in the microAmp (1/1,000,000) to picoAmp (1/1,000,000,000). We know that microAmp increases the energy molecule ATP in cells and helps reduce inflammation and

             Herbal medicines can work on many levels of the body. The chemicals within the herb have resonances within the physical form. The life force and spirit of the herb can affect both the emotional and etheric energies. Pharmaceutical drugs also can have there place if one can understand the effects that they have on the physical, etheric, and emotional levels. Refined drugs work strongly on the physical, but since all levels are connected, dissonant reactions within the physical body quickly disrupt the emotional and etheric levels.

Thus, since all things effect our physical and energy levels in some way, it is important to know whether those effects will be resonant effects or dissonant effects. Techniques used in kinesiology (muscle testing) such as Nutritional response Testing (NRT0 or Morphogenic Field Testing (MFT) or a device used for Electrodermal Screening (EDS) or the BICOM can help one to understand the effects of substances on the body. In my office, I use all three to determine these effects.
