Review: Le Bajo Milkbar
Your mum has a friend who lives in Melbourne. You meet him now and then, and he’s a foodie. Therefore, it is only natural that the meet-up arranged is for Brunch! This family friend picks you up and shows you your ‘hood’, and brings you to Le Bajo Milkbar, another COV-19 creation.
Tumblr media
If you have ever been to Bali and visited Potato Head Beach Club, then know that this is the creation by one of the owners of said club. Stuck in Australia during COV-19, he decided to re-purpose part of his enormous garage (that keeps his fancy cars and what nots) into a little café focussing on Japanese sandwiches aka ‘Sandos’ (San – do). Think thick milky shokupan bread slices (freshly baked) housing a variety of ingredients and hence a sandwich is formed.
The menu has sufficient to choose from as long as you know it’s essentially a Japanese Fusion Brunch café. So don’t expect huge hearty meals but trust me the sandwiches are sizeable. For those who love shortcakes that is not a cake, they do fruit sandos here as well. Drinks wise, you have in-house roasted coffees to ramunes.
Be prepared to queue especially if you head on a weekend, despite operating out of a garage, this place is a veritable name. We were lucky to wait no more than 20 minutes, but it can go over 20min as it’s a tiny place with few seats but plenty who are after a nice catch-up over brunch.
Tumblr media
You’ve seen the menu before arriving, so you know your exact choice – a Spicy Tako Karaage Sando. So, what’s the verdict?
Service: Friendly staff but don’t expect tip-top service. You order via QR code or at the counter and your only interaction is really when they serve you food. We ordered a coffee (takeaway) while queuing but managed to get a table before the order came. Frankly, we expect it to hence be served in a proper cup but they still served it in a disposable one. The waitress said she had already made it, so you know… If it was positioned as to be sustainable and not waste the cup, I would respect them. Putting that aside, friendly staff who will talk you through the menu if you wished but otherwise leave you alone.
Ambience: Think interior designer using expensive garage items to make a kitsch but comfortable setting. Wood, plants and an eclectic mix of collectibles creates a hip brunch café environment. It also clearly draws the ‘cool’ crowd. Also did I mention its cute logo (which they print on tote bags for sale).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taste: The sando was stuffed with fresh ingredients. The tako (octopus) was well fried, coming nice and crispy but not rubbery. The spicy mayo was not at all spicy but flavourful all the same. It took me quite some time to polish of the fat sando. The shokupan slices were just about right – not too thick to detract from the ingredients but sufficient for you to get the milky taste of bread. We ordered a side tofu salad which was a little average save for the fact they char the miso sauce on the tofu. That was a nice addition – aburi tofu (*≧ڡ≦*). I was told the coffee’s quality varies and that day was not the best. But I enjoyed my Mork hot chocolate. If you are in Melbourne, and come across hot chocolate called “Mork”, go for it! Think of it as Melbourne’s Valrhona. I won’t say it’s the same standard, but its pretty good all the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Price: $20+ for a meal
Worth a re-visit?: I could see myself re-visiting this place when I feel like having fancy sandwiches for brunch. But I suspect with the limited menu, I would be bored of it soon.

Chocolate Shop Melbourne
Chocolate lovers will be thrilled to learn that there are plenty of chocolate shops and cafes in Melbourne. These stores offer a wide selection of chocolates and bonbons, including handmade confectionery.
Koko Black is one of the most popular chocolate shops in Melbourne. They produce handmade chocolates and hot chocolates and sell them in gift boxes. Founded in 2003, they have since expanded to several cities in Australia.
Good Boy Chocolate makes artisanal, small-batch chocolate and follows a bean-to-bar process. The company also uses recycled paper and recycles cocoa husks for the wrappers.
Darren Purchese is a famous chef who has his own sweet studio in South Yarra. His shop offers more than 40 pralines and single-origin chocolate bars. He is a regular on Masterchef Australia.
Tumblr media
Louise Hannell's shop specializes in handmade chocolates, boiled lollies and Tasmanian fudge. Her products are all made in Australia.
Alessandro Luppolo is the pastry chef. He has worked in New York and Milan. You can buy his chocolate bars, ice cream and pastries online.
In addition to the cafe, Ministry of Chocolate also has a retail store. They source the finest couverture chocolate from around the world and create innovative flavours. Some seasonal treats are available as well.
Mork specializes in ethically sourced hot chocolate. Their Campfire Hot Chocolate includes a toasted marshmallow on a stick, flakes of smoked black salt, and an upended glass of beechwood smoke. This is then finished with a jug of the creamiest hot chocolate.

1. Three non-romantic duos: Roland and Olivere, Dante and Virgil, Frodo and Samwise. I cannot remember anything right now
2. A ship that may surprise others: it’s been so long since I consumed shippable media that I really can’t think of anything lmao
3. Last song: senators daughter AGAIN but it’s not because I haven’t listened to anything between now and a few hours ago it’s just that I’m in a mood for it
4. Last film: Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (still so weird)
5. Currently reading: Technically I just finished the inferno but like… I haven’t started purgatory sooo
6. Currently watching: Lost, Trailer Park Boys, A series of unfortunate events and very sporadically Mork and Mindy

1. Three non-romantic duos: Robin Hood and Little John (basically any variation, but right now thinking specifically of Bran and Iwan from Hood), Brother Cadfael and Brother Mark from the Brother Cadfael series, and Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer from The Magician’s Nephew.
2. A ship that might surprise others: do I really ship anything that would surprise anyone?
3. Last song: Pat a Pan/Fum, Fum, Fum from the second Mannheim Steamroller Symphony album
4. Last Film: The Christmas Waltz (a Hallmark movie, not the best but not too bad. The previous one was better: December Bride. Hilarious in a good way.)
5. Currently reading: I usually have three going. Right now it’s The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas for my morning audiobook, and still on Wet Behind the Ears by W. R. Gingell for my ebook. The physical book I have going should shortly be Jade Torch by @dragonanne :D
6. Currently watching: I haven’t quite given up on Merlin but I also haven’t made time for it in a very long time. Otherwise nothing until Miss Scarlet and the Duke and All Creatures Great And Small come back.
7. Currently consuming: just finished sugar cookies with peppermint sprinkles.

Guess the Trope/Degree/Hobby:
Sun (DBK), Mork (DBK), Rain (DBK), Guitar, Khim, Khem, Kay, Punn (Baker Boys), Pla Thong, Ray (Close Friends), Phai, Sab.
(ah yes the i would like to call: People Pleasers trope; forgot to include Arthit oh no)
lol, is it bad that my first thought was that a lot of those characters are baristas/work in coffee shops?
Then I was like... oh, wait, that’s not the question and also not quite for all of them? Though actually... might be? It is a job for all of them. Am... is that right? Did I get the right, almost convince myself I was wrong and then realize I was right?
... I think I did.
So barista it is! Coffee makers, bakers, the people who make treats that are mostly breakfast but also for all day.
... Look, I don’t drink coffee and I never go to places that make it fancier than Dunkin Donuts because I like their frozen hot chocolate also, yes, I have the taste buds of a child sometimes. Just because I am a giant foodie doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate trash food as well.
(There are a lot of them and, yeah, Arthrit falls into that same category. Such darlings.)

Wei watches Dark Blue Kiss Ep 5
Okay, this isn’t a repeat, I just titled my post for Ep 4 wrong because I have inexplicably lost the ability to count.
We pick back up with Pete finding out that Kao is still in contact with Non. Kao explains that he borrowed Non’s shirt because of the chocolate. Pete presses the issue and Kao does what he can to explain. Pete continues to be upset and says Kao would be just as upset. Kao tells Pete to calm down and let him explain properly next time. And then Pete does what I don’t like, and apologizes but with the rider that Kao “knows he has a hot-temper.”
Non is all smiles upon Kao’s confirmation that he’ll see him tomorrow.
At the cafe, Rain tries making a cake with Manow. They’re using a mixer bowl, why are you doing this by hand? Just whip it with the mixer. It’s a cute cake baking date between them. And then Manow asks after Mork, saying she made the cakes she made for them both. The one for Mork has hearts all over it. Manow disappears pretty quickly upon finding out Mork is out and about. Poor Rain. Too bad Mork isn’t interested in Manow to boot.
Sun and Mork continue their investigation into other coffee shops and the kinds of coffee they serve. It’s like many coffee dates in one. Mork comments that he’s sure Sun will win the competition and that he can use the money to revamp the cafe into a different style. They continue to the next place and Sun’s smelling of the coffee is disturbed by Mork’s smoking.
TBH, a lot of these coffees look interesting and I want to try them too!
At the last place, they seem to have a bit more fun with the coffee and bickering. Sun wants to ask what kind of coffee they use there and Mork tells him not to ask because it’s usually a trade secret. Sun insists on trying to find out and goes up to ask. The cashier says he can’t say and Sun presses forward anyway. Even bribery doesn’t work. Sun gets upset and Mork laughs at him. Sun says if Mork is so confident, then he should get the information. Mork promises to do it in exchange for his cigarettes.
In the back of the cafe, Mork goes and smokes a cigarette with the cashier. He shoots the shit with the cashier and catches him with the loophole that he shouldn’t be smoking behind the cafe, but the cashier doesn’t care and rebuffs him anyway. Sun teases him for failing but Mork reveals he was never going to find out from talking to him. He just needed the cashier to go away so they could go through the trash. Mork promises to exchange the info for the right to smoke at work. Mork, that’s a pretty low price.
At Non’s school Pete shows up to confront Non instead of Kao and return Non’s shirt. We then flashback to Pete persuading Kao to let him return the shirt. Pete promises to not do anything to hurt Non or Kao. Non is not bothered by Pete’s urging and instead interjects that if Kao is just a friend, then does Pete act that way for all his friend? Pete only reminds him to go away and throws the shirt at him.
At the cafe, Sun reveals that it was just a sticker covering the farm that grows the beans. It’s a farm with a common name all over the country. Mork tells Sun to go looking while he and Rain watch the shop. Mork tries to earnestly persuade Sun and they end up holding hands (sort of).
The next morning, Kao is putting up fliers at the school and Non comes to see him. Non asks if Kao hates him and Kao says that Non is his student and shouldn’t cross the line. Non apologizes, but it’s not super sincere. Kao’s mom comes up to ask after how Non’s lessons are coming along. Non starts with a litany of complements. And then he makes a dig at Pete and Kao’s friendship by saying he hopes to have a “friend” like Pete. Kao’s mom gives Kao a look but Kao explains that Pete’s interference is minimal. The situation diffused, we cut to Non’s dad.
He refuses the cheering club extra space, saying anything non-academic is useless. He even tells them the cheering club is a joke. Clearly his opinion is based in a discriminatory bias based on the way he talks about the members of the club.
Pete later goes to a meeting with the Dean. He wants Pete to give a speech at the Young Gear thing since all those who were part of About A Boyz did. Pete reluctantly agrees.
We cut to a scene at Pete’s home with his dad and Kao. Pete makes his spaghetti dish from his video clip. His dad asks what’s going on since he’s never cooked before. His dad presses that Pete never does anything unless he wants something. It turns out to be tasty and Kao says it’s been improved since the last time Pete made it. Pete’s dad wonders if he gives the sponsorship if About A Boyz will let Pete win. He then asks Pete about his internship and Pete says he’ll apply to T-Power like Kao.
Pete’s dad marvels at how much more mature Pete is after dating Kao. Kao continues to be shy about being called a boyfriend in front of Pete’s dad. Thankfully, Pete’s dad is very understanding and just glad that Kao is a good influence on Pete.
And then Pete’s dad asks if Kao has talked to his mom about it yet. Pete presses and his dad tells him to lay off and give Kao time. After such a nice moment, Pete’s dad teases Pete about his choice to work at T-Power, if it was for himself or to work with Kao.
But really... Didn’t Pete’s dad find out about them since a while back? Him acknowledging it formally now is weird?
Later Pete and Kao sit by the pool and talk about how Pete has changed since they started dating. It turns out that Kao was watching the interaction between Pete and Non. Pete also marvels at the fact that he was complemented by his dad today. Pete wonders afterwards why they have to prove so much just because of their sexuality and Kao agrees that it’s tough. Pete then admits that he wants to give his father something to brag about at the next dinner.
Apparently Pete’s name is Phubodin. That’s a name it is.
The next day, at About A Boyz, the director asks for products for them to sell that promote family togetherness. Pete lacks an idea and so does Non. The director says that if they come up with great products to sell, it will get them points for the competition.
At school, Sandee complains about taking part in Young Gear. Thada tries to calm her down and Sandee turns on him for getting them stuck helping with Young Gear. June rushes in to tell everyone about how Pete is giving the opening talk at Young Gear. Everyone teases Pete about his presentation skills. Pete is sure Kao will help. June teases some more and PeteKao tell him to go away at the same time.
At the cafe, Kao notices that Sun has hired Mork and teases him. Kao asks if Mork has replaced him and Sun instead diverts him. When Kao gets back to his tutoring, Manow catches sight of Mork and her attention is captured. It turns out Manow has a crush on Mork I guess. Rain watches as Manow and Mork talk. Mork talks to her kindly out of concern. Manow asks about the cake and Mork lies and says he ate it and that it was good. Rain continues huffing and puffing behind the counter and Sun calls him out for being jealous. Rain admits his jealousy and frustration that Manow only wants to talk to Mork and not him. Sun then asks if Mork has feelings for Manow and Rain says he can’t tell.
At Kao’s house, PeteKao and his mom watch the news talking about the suicide of a college student. Kao’s mom says it’s a sad thing to see happen and that she does not want such things to keep happening. She turns to Kao and asks if anything is stressing him out and that she wants to listen if he’s having a problem. She’s probably asking like this so that Kao has an opportunity to tell her what’s going on between him and Pete. She also uses the word for boyfriend/girlfriend to tell Kao to reach out to them too.
Kao’s mom also points out that she hasn’t seen the other members of the gang in a while. Kao deflects and says that he has to work more with Pete and that’s why she sees him more often. Pete waits until after Kao’s mom leaves to get more fruit to tell Kao that he is sure his mom suspects about them. Pete insists that every parent knows what their child is, they just choose whether to talk about it or not. I’d say that’s not a bad statement.
Later that night, Pete sleeps over again. Kao is upset about earlier and unsure how to tell his mom. Pete says to just tell her and Kao reminds Pete that he was caught by his dad and had no choice. Pete teases Kao and says he should just get caught and let that be the end of it just like he did. Pete’s recommendations continue to be silly afterwards. Kao dismisses them. Pete then says that Kao is too picky and Kao says he wants to find a good way to start otherwise it would be weird. Pete wonders why they didn’t come out when they were younger and Kao agrees it would have been nicer.
Pete then suggests another confession method. Kao refuses and Pete reiterates that he’s sure every parent wants to accept their child however they are. I wish it were that simple! Pete then forces Kao to smile and laughs at Kao’s silly attempts.
The nice moment is broken up by Non calling Kao’s phone. Pete tells Kao to pick up. Non called to ask Kao for ideas about products to sell since he always has good ideas. Pete hijacks the video call to tell off Non and remind him to stop bothering Kao. He even flips Non the middle finger and hangs up. He then runs off to brush his teeth and go to sleep. Kao stares after him, uneasy.
At the cafe, Sun offers to drive Mork home since he finished practicing early. Mork says he can get home on his own. Sun comes up with the excuse of getting food by Mork’s dorm. Mork asks what food is there? Sun says he just wants to take Mork home and Mork finally agrees. In the car, Sun offers to take Mork to dinner with him and Mork insists that he isn’t hungry, just tired. Sun chooses to drive past Mork’s dorm and says he changed his mind. He wants to go find their coffee beans together. Mork makes a face like he can’t believe what he got stuck doing,
In the previews, we see Pete getting nervous over the presentation. MorkSun also end up alone at a farm looking for the coffee beans. It looks like the MorkSun confession is coming!

studio sesh with mark
pairing: idol!mark x gender neutral reader
genre: fluffy fluff
word count: 697
summary: studio sesh with mork
a/n: another tweet that blew up skjdsjsd i saw this picture and went off here you go!!
Tumblr media
you picked up your phone and furrowed your brows at the time
it was another late night
well technically it was also an early morning
curled up on the sofa in the corner of the recording studio
you had a blanket around your legs and a cup warm hot chocolate in your hands
you were propped up against the armrest
watching your boyfriend through your squinted eyelids and the small window in the door
mark was doing take after take to get his verses just right
his hair was disheveled from hours of pulling at it in frustration
his glasses sat at the tip of his nose and the big t-shirt he sported hung loosely on his small frame
he was exhausted but stubborn in his perfectionistic ways
you were exhausted but stubborn in your supportive ways
you both knew neither of you were leaving until he was satisfied
your mind was foggy with sleep and you began to zone out
the tone and melody of his voice engulfed you
you've never felt calmer
but you looked up from the spot on the floor you were staring at when you heard him grunt
he removed the headphones angrily and finished off his fourth water bottle of the night
“mark, lets take a short break, okay?” the producer sighed, stepping out for some air
he huffed and pushed the door open, annoyance written all over his face
you reached your arms out to him and made grabby hands
causing his frown to smooth out into a tired smile
he took off his glasses and you put your drink aside
he plopped down next to you, fitting snugly in between your legs and the back of the couch
he let out a breath, leaning into your chest, arms encircling your waist
you fixed his hair, softly scratching at his scalp
an action that always soothed him into sleep
half of you hoping he would give in and allow you both to go home
it was silent for a while and you had thought maybe it had worked when...
“babe, why cant i nail it?”
“markie, to me you have. every single time. but i know the standards you have for yourself are very high. i know you want it to be perfect.”
more silence
he adjusted himself and moved up to poke his nose into the side of your neck
his breath tickled as he spoke
“i'm sorry, we won't be here much longer, i promise.”
he pressed his lips to your jaw
“i love you,” he whispered against your chin before he leaned up to kiss you
his lips were chapped and dry from the hours spent rapping over and over again
he grabbed your wrists from around his neck and held them tightly
and for the second time that morning night
you felt incredibly calm
your eyes were heavy but your heart fluttered
the feeling of his thumbs tracing along the back of your hands
his warm body against yours
if you could've melted into mark, you would've
they were sloppy kisses with little giggles and smiles in between
after all, you both were beyond tired
but you'd do anything for mark
he stopped only when he heard the door click and the footsteps of the producer behind him
he pulled away with a pout, that soon turned into a smirk
he rubbed at his eyes and shook his head to wake himself up
“thank you for staying.” he mumbled through swollen lips
you watched him trudge back into the booth
as he placed his headphones back on, he winked at you
you felt the heat rise to your cheeks and pulled your hood up
you settled back into your blanket and laid a little bit lower on the couch
your eyes were glued to mark
a newfound fire lit inside of him
you felt so proud
you watched him bounce around until you couldn't keep your eyes open any longer
you drifted off listening to his voice echo in the small studio
only waking up when his palms cupped your cheeks
his lips pressed into your hair
a raspy “lets go home” mumbled against your temple

Being in business for 4 years is no small feet!!! Congratulations to one of our fellow small business, whom we also happen to be stocking (just because they're so good). If you are a chocolate connoisseur and not yet visited @morkchocolate brew house, you are missing out big time 😊. Josefin, one of the founders of @morkchocolate is one of the passionate people we have ever met in the chocolate industry! Yesterday we had the privilege to join their 4th birthday party and was blown away by some of the cakes and chocolates they make inhouse. Now we are hooked (just like the Hot/iced chocolate powders we stock), don't know whether it was a good idea to go there 😜. Mork's Australian Native blend is a great example of their innovative and experimental approach! So when you feel like treating yourself or someone else, venture down to North Melbourne! #chocolateaddict #extraordinary https://www.instagram.com/p/Bup5fUpA2eZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kg0ypb6jyxgk

i was tagged by @squeezieslangblr and @langloser (thank u)
rules: answer the 20 questions and tag 20 (or so) amazing followers you’d like to get to know better!
name: i used to use ivan online?? but recently i’ve just been using mark (i know it’s not gender-neutral but i think of it that way so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
nickname: mark, mork if you’re rosie
zodiac sign: cancer sun, taurus moon, scorpio rising
height: 5'6″ (and ¾, technically, but i will never make it to 5′7″)
orientation: demisexual, exceptionally gay (i like the term “lunarian” but i’d never use it outside of tumblr)
nationality + ethnicity: german-american, white german/american
favorite fruit: peaches
favorite season: autumn!! but i love the second half of the year in general
favorite book: the emperor of any place, the martian, the spectacular now, and bloody jack (the first one) are all books i love too much to pick a favorite from
(also, the herbst wimmelbuch, but i’m not sure that counts)
favorite flower: there’s one that’s a bunch of tiny flowers in a big bunch, but i can’t remember the name, so i’ll say clover because there’s a bunch of clover along the path through our church’s graveyard and the honeybees really like them
favorite scent: peppermint (especially in hot cocoa)
favorite color: red! usually darker reds tho
favorite animal: i used to love hedgehogs, but maybe now bears? they’re terrifying but i love them anyway
coffee, tea, or hot chocolate: hot cocoa is so good but i drink tea more often (caffeine has no effect on me and i don’t like the taste of coffee, so i never cared for it)
average hours of sleep: 6-7, but it is summer so
cats or dogs: it depends? i love big, calm dogs (especially the ones that lean against your leg…..) (we met a dog named little debbie who was a 100-pound bernese mountain dog, and i loved her so much, but she was too strong for our skinny stick family to handle)
a lot of cats aren’t super affectionate or friendly right off the bat (and i’m the same way) so i don’t usually end up making friends with them. but i can’t stand dogs with high-pitched barks and there are definitely cats that are more social, so it depends on the animal itself, i think ;o;
number of blankets you sleep with: i tend to sleep with as many as possible…i like it when covers are super heavy so if i have a comforter i’ll sleep with it even when it’s super hot outside
dream trip: oh gosh…i’d really like to visit tokyo or shenzhen when i’m younger, but i also want to see iceland and russia and travel around europe (at some point, anyway)
blog created: fall of 2014 (i can’t believe i’ve been on here for almost 3 years)
number of followers: 588
@musicplusinternetminussleep, if you haven’t done it already!

Mörk Chocolate Brew House
150 Errol St, North Melbourne VIC 3051
Food
A: We didn’t have any food I don’t know why this heading is ‘food’? But that aside, the Campfire Hot Chocolate was AMAZING! Finally found a decent hot choc that’s not just warm milk with some sugary tasting powder or syrup mixed in ;) They also had a variety of chocolates and some cakes available at the cafe that looked great.
Llio: I usually have a strong dislike for hot chocolate so I was pretty apprehensive going into this, however, I was very pleasantly surprised. I selected the ‘very dark’ option, which was made with 80% dark chocolate. I found it to be quite bitter and not at all sweet- which was absolutely perfect for me. I would definitely order it again.
Emily: Like A, I also had the social media renowned Campfire Hot Chocolate but unlike all my other campfire experiences there was no dirt, mosquito bites or burnt meals of disappointment. In fact, this drink is far from the great outdoors- and that’s just how I like it. A creamy, rich dark hot chocolate you pour into a glass of smoke creates a taste that can be enjoyed by all. Served with charcoal salt and a toasted marshmallow (made by the Brew House) add nostalgic memories to the drink, without any of the unpleasantries. This is a drink to be enjoyed around friends on a day out or simply when you want to treat yo’ self to a little decadence.
A: Wow, Emily. You poet you! - I’m impressed.
Naomi: Emily, just stop where you are and start professionally writing ads for people! :’) I got the 50% hot chocolate option, which was $5 (because I’m a broke bitch and didn’t have much to spend), which was honestly really really good! I haven’t had hot chocolate for ages because I found myself disappointed, due to them being too cold, too hot or too water when made at home or at some cafes (also partially to do with finding a superior hot, milky beverage: the chai latte); however, I really enjoyed this hot chocolate and seriously would consider drinking again!
Service
A: Staff were really friendly and we were looked after very well. Free sample of vanilla infused sparkling water <3
Llio: The service was impeccable, our waitress was incredibly kind and very helpful.
Emily: Okay so this may seem impossible to some but I have the habit of dressing like a bag lady. Think Old Bird Lady from Mary Poppins meets 21st century. That is me. That is how I look with my second-hand, slightly frayed coat. But instead of looking down at me like SOME food servers have, I was treated with the utmost respect even when I ordered just one thing from the menu. Our waitress was so lovely, polite and helpful that I am so frustrated that I can’t remember her name. This service was above and beyond.
Naomi: They offered to hang up our coats… ‘nuff said.
Ambiance
A: waiting for your cue to figure out what to write in this section @Emily :’)
Emily: A you know what ambiance is
A: Hahaha ok so it was a pretty great place to sit down with some friends, chat, and enjoy the relaxed and quiet atmosphere. How’s that for ambiance?
Emily: This place is my new happy place. Window view. Warm lighting. Perfect table height. Green plants. Zen.
A: Now that you mention it, that table height was spot on. Loved watching them do the smoke for our Campfire Hot Chocolates behind the counter as well - it left the whole room with a subtle smoky smell.
Naomi: I agree with everything ^ it was so cute. The place was decked out in really simple decoration with pretty neutral tones which made it so peaceful to sit in. Plus the art books and hipster-healthy-mum cook books were super pretty!
Concluding remarks
A: A regular $9 hot choc is a bit much for a student budget as much as it pains me, but the $5 dark choc one seemed more do-able…. To be honest I’m surprised that it only cost that much and I could easily see them upping these prices considerably as word gets round and they become more in demand. They appear to have gone to great lengths to develop such a sophisticated brand, with probably the best customer service I’ve encountered.
Llio: It was a very enjoyable experience with a great atmosphere and delicious, reasonably priced hot chocolate.
Emily: You definitely pay for what you’re getting- impeccable service and even better drinks!
Naomi: 10/10 would come again, especially on a chilly morning with friends.

Vegan Deli & Cafe: Shift Eatery, Surry Hills
Shift Eatery is a popular vegan cafe and deli on Commonwealth Street in Surry Hills. With an all vegan menu with superfood ingredients they do vegan versions of club sandwiches and Reubens. Started by vegan James Danaskos it is designed to shift people to vegan eating and stay there.
It's Sunday afternoon when Mr NQN, Mochi and I arrive at Shift Eatery. Shift is one of the few places in Surry Hills open on a Sunday and there are two outside tables with an outdoor heater (hooray!).
There's a fridge full of goodies that make my eyes pop - fishless tuna? Vegan mozzarella and bbq jackfruit? Yup they've got it. And there are vegan versions of things I didn't even know needed to become veganified (eg. peanut butter, seriously what am I missing?).
Service is super friendly and sweet from everyone. While there are plenty of regular options that you'll find at a cafe, I am particularly interested in their take on a club and Reuben sandwich.
Now the thing about mock meats: I don't think they're amazing quite honestly and they are dry AF when you eat them by themselves. And if I eat too much of them my stomach clenches in knots and I know that mock meat isn't ever going to be a big thing for me.
Reuben's Vegan Brother, Steve $16.50
But in a sandwich with other items in smaller doses they can take on the qualities of meat. Take the Reuben sandwich or actually the Steve sandwich (aka Reuben's vegan brother) for example with slices of "pastrami", sauerkraut, Russian dressing, "cheddar cheese" and pickles on toasted rye. The "pastrami" mixed with everything else makes it taste quite Reuben-y and it's a satisfying sandwich. It does look different from the ones on social media where there are several layers of "pastrami". I think that's just for the look of a pastrami sandwich but given how dry and thick faux meat can be, you definitely don't want it that layered.
Join the club $17.50
There's also the club sandwich. It's got slices of fry’s "chicken" soy schnitzel, house-made "turkey" seitan slices, cheddar "cheese", mashed avocado, sliced tomato and greens with aioli on toasted seeded sourdough (and by now I feel like I've used up all the quotation marks). That's also quite good but the aioli really helps in that regard because there is double the amount of mock meat and it needs the sauce. Out of the two the Reuben was probably the most convincing and both of our favourite.
Banana Salted Caramel $10 70%cacao hot chocolate $5.50
We also tried some drinks- a hot chocolate using Mork's chocolate and macadamia milk. It comes in a deep cup with a good chocolatey hit. You can choose between soy, almond, macadamia or coconut milk with drinks. The banana salted caramel shake is sweet but not overly so and creamy. The salted caramel is thick and drips down the inside of the cup.
Chia Waffle $18
Dessert at lunch? Sure waffles count as dessert right? The gluten free chia waffle is crispy and comes drizzled with orange syrup and topped with a creamy, sweet, house made cashew gelato, sliced bananas and strawberries and a fudge sauce as well as turmeric granola with coconut and seeds. There is the choice to add either peanut butter or their house made notella and I'm feeling unexpectedly benevolent towards Nutella lover Mr NQN so we go with that. It's enormous and really sizeable enough to share and the waffle stays crisp. We both like the mild orange syrup and fresh fruit although it doesn't really need the granola sprinkles which are perhaps more for decoration.
So tell me Dear Reader, are you team peanut butter or Nutella? What do you think about mock meats? Are you a part time or full time vegan?
This meal was independently paid for.
