Reblogging this because if anyone wants a real good example of "fluff" done well?
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.
The series packs more story and characterization into 26 episodes than the big boys manage in 200. Even in the middle of or on the heels of big action or drama moments, the series always finds time for warmth and emotional connection, and it does it with such skill and from such interesting directions that seem so logical in hindsight.
The original author, Nahoko Uehashi, is a children's book author and a cultural anthropologist, and the former's ability for clear, unambiguous storytelling that says as much as it can in as few words as possible melds with the latter's grasp of culture's differences and commonalities throughout history to create a story set in a world that breathes and feels fucking alive.
The anime director, Kenji Kamiyama, lent his and his team's chops at making series where the best goddamn episodes you've ever seen are those where it's just people talking to each other to the anime adaptation, which covers the first novel in the series. Thanks to everyone's talent, they were able to make a series in rare form, just incredible in terms of how deftly it can get you to care for the characters.
If you can find the series, it comes with a hearty recommendation both on its own merits and as a masterclass on how to write low-tension, understated scenes that still pack a lot of torque and characterization.
i dont think that people actually dislike 'fluff' in writing its just that not many people know how to write characters well when nothing high stakes is happening and therefore the scenes feel bland or wasted (tucks and rolls offstage) because they can only imagine people to be interesting during high action scenes and not during the slower moments in between (slides on a tomato) likely because they consider their own life and the people around them uninteresting and cannot imagine characters they want to like to be anything less than larger than life when in reality the quiet humanity between action is the core of all good character writing (gets shot)
