Derek finished his whiskey first and stood, holding out his hand to Aaron, begging him to dance. There were a number of couples out on the floor already while the band pumped out slow, twangy, thumping songs with gritty guitar and Derek couldn't stand sitting any longer. They kept to themselves, bodies pressed together, each inhaling the intoxicating scent of the other and Aaron wanted more whiskey and he wanted his hands in places that he would never put them in front of his brother and he wanted Derek to be wearing less clothes. 📹 "Journalist" Pierce Morgan does actual journalism, interrogating the Israeli army spokesperson who was able to provide "exact figures" for the number of Hamas militants killed in the Gaza genocide but seemingly has no clue how many civilian casualties have been inflicted by the Israeli occupation forces.

At one point, the spokesperson lets slip that he doesn't have the "authorization" to give civilian casualty figures but then returns to claiming he doesn't actually know.

Pierce Morgan peppers the spokesperson with common sense questions, but he is unable to provide satisfactory answers.

It becomes clear in the interview that if the western media was actually doing its job, the Israeli occupation's narratives would fall apart.

Summary: After a journalist does the BAU dirty, Derek is forced to take the job at the New York Field Office. Hotch is forced to deal. (AU where Hotch and Haley have a daughter instead of a son. Based on this story.)

Notes: Okay, this is all just cute. Surgery finally happens, it's cute and Lucy is cute and it's just...it's short but there is a lot of precious thrown into this shorty. You may need to see a dentist afterward.

“You sure about this?”

Derek wasn't usually so wishy washy, but as the surgery date loomed on the horizon, he was beginning to feel more than a little nervous. He didn't trust surgeons, partially, and for no particular reason other than the simple fact that no one should have that much power over a completely vulnerable person. He hated the idea of Hotch being unconscious and subject to the whims of another person. Yeah, the person was charged with helping, with fixing, but he'd seen enough evil in his time to know that wasn't always the case.

So, if he didn't exactly trust the situation, who could blame him? He was on the phone with Hotch with his feet kicked up on the coffee table watching Sean play Dr. Mario, piling up colorful pills one after another to some of the most irritating music he'd ever heard. Since moving to New York, he and Sean had gotten to be close...maybe a little too close for Hotch's taste but he was trying his best not to think about that. Not to think about the number of beers it took for Sean's jaw to loosen and for secrets to flow like mead in the hall of gods.

“I'm sure,” was Hotch's quiet reply. He was already in bed, his bad ear pressed into his pillow and the phone propped up on his good one. It was a sight. He was exhausted, and holding the phone required effort he wasn't entirely willing to expend. “Haley is dropping Lucy off here tomorrow at noon and we'll drive up after. We can bring dinner.”

“I'm cooking, don't worry about it. My new kitchen needs some use. Sean's been bringing food by almost every night...that restaurant is fuckin' baller, but I'm jonesin' for something home cooked. You guys just bring yourselves.”

“He won't eat, you know,” Sean said, not dragging his eyes from the screen. Derek huffed and turned away from him, hoping Hotch hadn't heard. It was likely, given his hearing troubles, he might get lucky.

“I'll eat,” he replied even quieter, almost indignantly. “It's the last solid food I'll get for at least a week. I'll eat.”

“I know you will. Your brother's just an ass.”

He didn't eat much, it turned out, but that was not a surprise for either of them. His nerves were a little intense, and he was watching the clock knowing that the cut off time was approaching. Nothing by mouth after 8pm, not even water, and he wasn't going to complain. But it was only 6 and Derek's chicken pot pie was good enough that even Lucy was on her second helping and she was usually pretty averse to peas in her food. There they sat, tiny green balls, and she didn't push a single one away. “Is this your mom's recipe?” Hotch asked when he got about half done with his slice. Derek nodded happily, already on his third.

“Yeah. Morgan family secret.”

“Well whatever magic spell your mother puts in her recipe just got Lu here to eat peas.”

“Daddy,” she pointed out, poking her chubby little finger at his plate. “You're not eating your peas.” She wouldn't share that she was eating her peas because Clooney wasn't around to take them off of her hands...he was at Sean's for the night, just a precaution. One less thing to worry about. Sean would bring him back the next day if everything went well and then she could feed him her unwanted green foods again.

He huffed and jabbed at a bite, scrunching his nose at her. “Daddy's tummy is a little upset. I'm eating my peas just fine.”

He did end up finishing his slice, if only out of spite, and by morning was glad he'd done it because he was starving and the smell of Derek's coffee was almost enough to bring him to his knees.

The procedure was scheduled early in the morning, the earliest appointment they had available. It was convenient that the office was close, they could walk there and take a cab back. Derek had insisted that he'd drive but Hotch thought that sounded absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. Driving and paying for parking in a city like this was an absurdity he couldn't tolerate. It was six blocks. So, they checked him in, said their goodbyes, and watched the nurses take him back.

“You won't have any excuse for not hearing me anymore...” Derek said, kissing him on the temple in the one single moment they had alone. The nurses had taken Lucy out to their desk to hook her up with all the goods, lollipops and stickers and little gummy hands that would stick to Derek's walls and leave greasy little stains behind.

“I've never needed an excuse,” was Hotch's reply and it lightened the mood just enough that Derek felt the tension in his shoulders melt.

He and Lucy had a couple hours to kill, and even though she'd eaten breakfast (a slab of toast covered in butter right in front of Hotch who wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything) she insisted she was starving.

“Starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrving.”

That was how she'd said it, and he couldn't be expected to stand up to that. So they found a nearby diner and sat down in a blue vinyl booth, just the two of them. Derek spread out on one side with his jacket and Hotch's jacket (among other items of his that they'd shoved into his hands), Lucy in her little plastic booster seat on the other side. She kicked her feet against the seat while she perused the enormous menu. She looked and looked, flipped the giant pages, smiled at the photos of food all the while she already knew what she wanted.

Lucy wanted pickles.

Not just any pickles, she wanted one out of the jar on the counter. Those pickles. What she really wanted was to stick her whole hand in there and pull one out herself but she knew that wasn't likely to happen. She could accept that. Barely.

Yeah, the hash browns would be good too, with extra ketchup and pepper she agreed in her way, but that pickle was as big as her arm and she couldn't see anything else in the whole world outside of that. The waitress, because they were some of the only people in there, let her grab her own pickle.

With her hand. She put Lucy's tiny hand inside of a big vinyl glove that came up to her elbow and let her choose the exact pickle she wanted while Derek took a picture to show Hotch when he came out of surgery. The kid was a kick and a half. He sent the picture to Haley while Lucy ordered the rest of her meal.

She munched that chosen pickle proudly while talking Derek's ear off. “I'm learning my ABC's,” she announced. “Also I can do plus and minus and I know every animal. Do you know every animal?” She already knew what sound it made when s & h were smashed together in a word, and she needed Derek to know that too. It had been weeks and weeks since she'd seen him, they had a lot of catching up to do and she intended to do it all while they had this time together. “Daddy says it to me and you all the time! He told it to you today! Shhhhh...” she said it with a little smirk, like she'd just lighted on a secret joke that'd fly right over Derek's head.

So, he played along. “I don't get it,” he replied, trying to look as confused as he could muster. She giggled wildly and waved her pickle around like it was a magic wand.

“You do too! Shhh like be quiet? Come on Derek...” The way she said his name had more sass in it than he'd ever heard and his name had been uttered with sass on the lips of plenty of people, especially women, over his time on this Earth.

“You're not worried about your dad?” Derek asked, scooping a bite of scrambled eggs onto his fork. He was nervous, he was worried, but he also had a milkshake sitting beside him even though it was breakfast. A plate of eggs, a bowl of fruit (he always ordered the damn fruit even if he didn't like it because that was Hotch's favorite part and now the fruit was just sitting there untouched because he doesn't like melon and that's Hotch's thing...) so really he was doing okay.

Sort of okay.

Only half a mess. The milkshake was helping.

He called it testing out flavors, he'd bring one for Hotch too. Lucy picked the blackberry shake, Derek got chocolate. Haley was texting him about the procedure and to make sure Lucy was being well-behaved, the photo with the pickle was a little suspicious out of context he realized.

No news yet, he texted. Should be fine. Lucy's a menace. Headed back to the office soon.

“Daddy's gonna be fine,” she announced as he typed his message to Haley, running her finger down the list of milkshake flavors. There had to be more than fifty there but she'd narrowed it down, the kid was decisive. “Which one says banana? This one or this one?”

“That one,” Derek pointed and she nodded. He knew she was right. A banana milkshake, no whipped cream, no cherry. Definitely not the banana coconut, or the peanut butter one, just the plain banana. He wouldn't be able to eat solid food for a few days (something Derek wished he'd known before he bought six cartons of Hotch's favorite mint chip ice cream and filled his entire freezer with the stuff) but he'd be grumpy and frowny so they'd definitely need reinforcements.

“Can I have the cherry?” she asked as they walked back toward the office. The milkshake hit the ground in the middle of the street when Lucy tripped on a pothole (maybe she was looking up at a giant billboard advertising a movie she'd been dying to see but Derek didn't press her for details) and thankfully they'd left the diner in plenty of time to go back for another. This time he gave her the cherry right away and he held the milkshake in one hand, her sweaty little vinegar pickle stained hand (three washes hadn't made it smell less like a pickle) firmly in his other. Learning those emergency dad lessons one at a time.

At the office, Derek approached the front desk slowly while Lucy rushed over to the toys. They were exactly as she'd left them earlier and she resumed play like no time had passed. Her pockets were still full of the goodies they'd given her, she was going to be patient and open those at Derek's place.

No one was at the counter so Derek leaned to try and see, he could hear voices but the nurses were just out of sight. When he finally spotted them, there were two of them hovering over a photo and he felt his stomach twist painfully at just a glimpse. He knew exactly what the photo was.

It had been weeks, but either the new cycle was slow or they didn't bother to switch out their magazine racks very often. The nurse closest to him held a printed copy of the Post that she'd pulled from an exam room. “This is him, right? The guy we have in recovery?”

“Yeah,” the other nurse whispered in awe. “He's really nice,” she started, her eyes suddenly catching Derek's movement. She stepped in front of her co-worker with the paper, like she was hiding something, and asked how she could help him when she knew exactly how she could. “Um. Can I...”

“I'm here to pick up Aaron Hotchner. The man in the photo.”

Audio Drama Sunday - 14th April ✨

Oh my god, the audio sure did drama this week!!  

👻 @tellnotalespod (S2E7.5) HOW did none of us put this together sooner?! Oh my god, what an absolutely INCREDIBLE little twist. I love the undercurrent of hopeful resilience in Tell No Tales (Leo is going to get with the programme really soon 🤞) and I am screaming, crying and throwing up imagining the end of season reunion 😭 HOWEVER, don’t think I missed for a second that Riley is asking for another packet of painkillers . . . it would be so like him to think that 16 paracetamol is two doses of paracetamol but still! He needs to be okay!!

🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (147) hhhhh what a GOOD episode. There’s something different about the horror of season 4 that I want someone with a literature degree to talk to me about for hours. Can we please talk about how the murder victim had a treble clef carved into them . . . i.e. the symbol at the start of a piece of music. It’S SO CLEVER I love the intricate details of this show!!!!! And, can we also talk about how emotional I feel about Clem (namer of everything) is in love with Shelby (has a cat named Cat). There’s something in that which is giving me palpitations.

🤴 Inco @itmeblog (S3E20-34) If anyone takes SAWA away from Nova again I am going to throw HANDS. I’ve always considered SAWA to be endearingly overbearing with her prompts to Nova but we got such a good glimpse of how vital she is in the library/archives and I love her 😭

🖥️ The Magnus Protocol (11) Oooh I liked this episode!! I love it when you’re left to fill in the blanks in a horror story - my mind is still whirring through so many awful scenarios. 

🍎 @notquitedeadpod (XXXIV-XXXV) ah! I’ve accidentally caught up to Not Quite Dead! What will my Sunday afternoons look like now?? There were so many moments in these eps which made me laugh but I’m mostly just so in awe of how complex and real these characters are. Neige genuinely feels 10000 years old and shaped by the trauma of each of them. I need to check the release schedule because I cannot wait for more!!

Okay so, late post right here. I did continue this piece today but I'm counting it for yesterday only. Today I'm starting the "big illustration" and I'll not share anything until I finished it. Like a big surprise for us !

Sooo, you saw the first steps of the process last post ; here is the final illustration. It was not supposed to be an illustration at first but here you go. Today's was about digital painting, color studies, anatomy, and art-style. I know it's a bit "static" and not anatomically correct but y'all... I'm actually in love. The vibe and the coloring, the HAIR ? That's it. That's my style. It's a very good end to this month, before the big illustration (see the ping post in my profile for context).

Like I said, no post 'til end of the month with the big finale drawing. I hope y'all will like it, I'm currently working on it. Thanks for all of the support during this month. I love y'all sm ❤️

I celebrate her on the 28th of February. I chose the 28th because the battle was in the year 28CE, and then chose February not really for a reason. I also connect her with the Samhain season, although not really with Samhain per se.

Goodbye looks at things rationally. If he thinks it’s something that can be forgiven, he forgives himself easily. He also forgives himself a bit more easily in general than most people, since he believes most things he does are justified due to his whole. Situation. June on the other hand has a hard time forgiving himself. He’ll remember something he said that hurt someone’s feelings and it’ll keep him up at night.

⚔️ - How does this oc handle conflict?

One word. De-escalation. He’d been heavily programmed with that knowledge. But if that doesn’t work, and it’s a situation that he can’t talk down at all, he hides. Run and hide.

Hello really really REALLY wants to yell. He wants to say no to the white coats that take him to his adjustments. But he wants to do it his own way, not the way goodbye wants to.

June plays the guitar very well, as well as being a novice at several other ones (all the instruments from his old band for sure, as well as some random ones. As a list: guitar, drums, bass guitar, trumpet, kazoo, and he played the saxophone in highschool)

Sleeping. Deep dad sleep. This man was born to be a father. He’d grab a beer and fall asleep on the couch before drinking it while watching a nature documentary. (About the ocean)

June is very good with kids! He wanted to be a teacher when he was growing up and used to babysit neighborhood kids all the time. He gave up on that when Morgan told him an elementary school teacher couldn’t be colourblind (how would he teach them colours? Duh.)

Picking engineer was halfway between being something he enjoyed doing and being petty towards Morgan, since his handicap also applies at this job too

Goodbye likes children to an extent, but mostly when they’re not crying or running around. A sleeping or calm child? He enjoys their company. A kid running around and screaming while playing? No thanks.

Goodbye has been trying and wanting to bite SO badly. So bad. He’s clawed at their faceplate before just trying to open it. It almost felt like phantom pains.

🐸 - What’s this oc’s sense of humor like?

Most things he finds amusing would get very little reaction out of him, usually just a ‘hm.’ Or something similar. One surefire way to get him to absolutely piss his pants laughing though is when people react wildly when they’re startled. Someone holding up their fists only to immediately relax, someone gasping and hugging the wall, immediately clutching their pearls: gets him every time.

US TO CONSIDER WITHDRAWAL FROM SYRIAN OCCUPATION

The United States is considering a withdrawal of its forces from Syria, according to an article published in Foreign Policy, an online news periodical with ties to the U.S. Defense establishment.

Citing four sources from within the U.S. departments of State and Defense, Foreign Policy claims active internal discussions are ongoing within the Biden administration on a troop withdrawal from Syria, a notoriously illegal occupation of nearly one-third of Syrian territory, which the United States has used to siphon tens of billions of dollars worth of oil out of the country.

The piece was written by senior fellow and director of the Syrian Counterterrorism and Extremism Programs at Middle East Institute, Charles Lister.

The organization itself, the Middle East Institute, is funded by a who's-who of U.S. proxy-governments, Intelligence sources, elite Universities, and giant corporations including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, ExxonMobil, George Soros's Open Societies Foundation, Morgan Stanley, and Princeton University.

The article itself presents the decision on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria as an impending disaster, warning that the Islamic State is waiting in the wings for an opportunity to take back control over the Levant, with the title of the published article "America is planning to withdraw from Syria- and create a disaster."

Lister warns that the withdrawal should be "cause for significant concern" and that, while no decision has yet been reached by the Biden administration, the White House is "no longer invested in sustaining a mission that it perceives as unnecessary."

"Notwithstanding the catastrophic effect that a withdrawal would have on U.S. and allied influence over the unresolved and acutely volatile crisis in Syria, it would also be a gift to the Islamic State. While significantly weakened, the group is in fact primed for a resurgence in Syria, if given the space to do so," Lister summerized.

Lister claims that the United States's "unprecedented intervention" launched in 2014 by the Obama administration, alongside "80 partner nations," was "remarkably successful," without ever mentioning Iran's intervention to organize a strong resistance to the Islamic State in Iraq, nor the Russian Intervention to strengthen and reinforce Syria's military and air defenses.

Lister claims the situation in Syria is "more complex" than that of Iraq's, adding that "with approximately 900 troops on the ground, the United States is playing an instrumental role in containing and degrading a persistent Islamic State insurgency in northeastern Syria, working alongside its local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)."

Again, Lister ignores the role played by the Russian military in providing air cover and tactical strikes on behalf of the Syrian military, warning that the threat from IS remains a serious cause for concern.

Lister points to a rocket attack launched against a prison maintained by U.S. proxy-forces to warn of the dangers in Syria, elaborating on the heroic defense of the so-called "Syrian Democratic Forces," comprised of a mix of jihadist groups, some with ties to al-Qaeda, that ran amok, sowing chaos and destabilizing Eastern Syria, until the Russian Intervention in September 2015, when U.S. proxy-forces were largely sequestered into the illegally U.S.-occupied territory in the eastern-most third of Syria.

Lister goes on to raise alarms over the security situation in western Syria too, where Syrian government forces, with the help of the Russian military, have since regained control of much of its territory formally under the control of jihadist groups.

"While U.S. troops and their SDF partners have managed to contain the Islamic State’s recovery in Syria’s northeast, the situation is far more concerning to the west—on the other side of the Euphrates River, where the Syrian regime is in control, at least on paper," Lister claims.

Lister, pushing for the U.S. to remain in Syria, says that "In this vast expanse of desert, the Islamic State has been engaged in a slow but methodical recovery, exploiting regime indifference and its inability to challenge a fluid desert-based insurgency."

Lister's alarmism goes on, describing the supposed regrouping of IS in various government-held regions of Syria, even going so far as to claim that the Islamic State has only been quiet in recent months due to employing a strategy of concealing its operations, never pointing to specific examples that might back those claims.

"For the past several years, the Islamic State has purposely concealed its level of operation in Syria, consistently choosing not to claim responsibility for attacks that it was conducting," the article claims, inversely suggesting the absence of activity by the extremist group is actually evidence of their malfeasance.

Lister also claims that the situation in the Gaza Strip is fueling the groups return, stating that the "war in Gaza and a spiraling regional crises are adding fuel to its fire and creating opportunities for the terror group to exploit the situation for its own advantage," without ever giving any concrete examples of how, where and in what way the group is returning, only citing research from his own shadily-funded organization's projects as evidence.

"According to the Counter Extremism Project, in 2023 alone, the Islamic State conducted at least 212 attacks in Syria’s central desert region, killing at least 502 people. As covert threats and overt attacks increase, reports are emerging with increasing frequency of desertions within regime ranks," Lister says.

Lister then claims that the United States is the only thing holding the region together even as he admits there's little the U.S. can do within territories controlled by the Syrian government.

That claim, that the U.S. is the glue holding Syria together, flies in the face of the countless warnings by both the Syrian and Russian governments that say the United States is in fact the source of instability in the region.

"While there is little that U.S. forces can do to alter Islamic State activities within the regime-controlled regions of Syria, U.S. troops are the glue holding together the only meaningful challenge to the Islamic State within a third of Syrian territory. Were that glue to disappear, a significant resurgence in Syria would be all but guaranteed, and a destabilizing spillover into Iraq a certainty."

Interestingly, Lister goes on to point to Iraq as an important player in the future of the Islamic State group, admitting that increased tensions created by the U.S. occupation in Iraq, along with the U.S support for Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza, is creating a new push in the country to remove U.S. forces from Iraq by its parliament, creating a supposed opening for extremist groups in the region.

Lister puts the blame squarely on Iran for these openings, and for Iraq's growing impatience with Washington, adding that a troop withdrawal would be a bad idea, even invoking the collapse of U.S. proxy-forces in Afghanistan to warn of the dangers of a troop withdrawal from Syria.

"Ultimately, events since October have placed the U.S. deployment in northeast Syria on a fraying thread—hence recent internal consideration of a Syria withdrawal," Lister says, adding that "Given the disastrous consequences of the hurried exit from Afghanistan in 2021 and the impending U.S. election later this year, it is hard to grasp why the Biden administration would be considering a withdrawal from Syria."

Lister concludes that "no matter how such a withdrawal was conducted, it would trigger chaos and a swift surge in terror threats."

"There can be no denying the clear sense in policy circles that it is being actively considered—and that it has been accepted as an eventual inevitability," Lister claims.

Lister emphasized that anyone considering a collaborative approach with the Syrian government are making a big mistake, because "that would not only be a phenomenal boon to the Islamic State, but simply impossible on its own terms."

Lister explained that "part of the SDF may have periodic contact with Assad’s regime, but they are far from natural allies. The regime would never allow the SDF to sustain itself, and Turkey would do everything possible to kill what remained [of Washington's proxies]."

"The last time that the Islamic State surged in Syria, in 2014, it transformed international security in profoundly negative ways. Should a U.S. withdrawal precipitate a return to Islamic State chaos, we will be relegated to mere observers, unable to return to a region that we will have placed squarely under the control of a pariah regime and its Russian and Iranian allies."
