woke: fangs of fortune is a story about myth and legend, how its editing, colour grading, costuming and aesthetic choices provide a sense that the characters are constantly living in a dream as it proposes that many myths are—dreamlike and where things are just are because people believe in them, things get incoherent, and with said characters developing relationships with each other that intrigue the heavens, all while challenging the traditional tropes of love and fate

bespoke: fangs of fortune is a once in a lifetime moving picture art form that compels the audience to suspend their belief of reality to follow the story, making them feel as though they are submerged in a long dream with the characters. it is only when the story ends, that we wake back up to reality. did everything really happen?

What if he's like. Extra Bitter about his punishment because:

1) These modern demigods have it so easy, with Camp and Thalia's barrier and the Mist and the monsters' reduced powers and on and on with all of the world's developments

Like, yes, this batch in particular got impossibly unlucky, with two wars and the Triumvirate's bullshit happening in the span of not even a decade, but they still get to go to school. Sure, there's always a monster here or there, but that's nothing in light of having a home where they feel safe and not having to constantly travel because if just one monster finds where you're staying, you're doomed so you have to leave immediately. And the monsters are weaker now, too, because people don't remember and believe in them in the same capacity as back in ye' old days!

And there's always something around, some building or bus or whatnot the demigods can use to their advantage, rather than being stranded on a mountain or in the middle of a forest. They don't even have to hunt, or go hungry for months at a time, because there's food everywhere — sure, there's demigods Fated for some dumpster diving and nights in sewers, but that's a minority.

And the humans around them are better, too! Child protection and the legal system are far from perfect, but for the most part, people won't turn a blind eye to you being tied up and kidnapped, or beaten into a pulp in the middle of the street for stealing.

(Your mother won't be convinced to disintegrate with you in her womb)

(You won't be confused about your very being during your childhood because you must hide from your stepmother, your identity unimportant in face of fear)

(Your aunt and uncle won't be driven to insanity and murder with no repercussions)

(You won't be hunted down since before you were even born)

2) It still isn't easy, and they're still living in pain and dying young, and can the gods (him included) really not do anything about that?

The other gods don't get children in the way he does; they see extensions of themselves, weapons, people ready to take up arms in their name. But Dionysus once gnawed on fabric dolls and wooden teethers just the same as these new demigods, and though it's been millennia, growing up with death on every step leaves a lasting mark — especially when he has found kin in his wife about it.

So he knows: the eight-year-old girl is not stupid, immature, or cowardly for crying upon the first stains on her sword; the eleven-year-old boy is not defective because of a burst of random emotion; the fifteen-year-old girl is not foolish for clinging to her toys whenever she can; the sixteen-year-old boy is not weak for getting hurt and not remaining stoic about it.

He was like that once upon a time, too, and is the point not for it to get easier? Has it really not yet been enough time for it to be easy?

Just thinking about Spock's obvious annoyance and jealousy upon finding Kirk kissing Helen in "The Dagger of the Mind"—which only happens as a result of Helen and Dr. Adams implanting false memories and feelings in Kirk's mind. And Spock actually knows all about the mindfuck machine at that point, and saving Kirk from it/Adams is why he's there in the first place, and his look of annoyed judgment happens after Helen says, "This isn't right! Dr. Adams did this to you!"

The episode ends with a visibly shaken Kirk returning to the bridge, talking about how he can actually believe in death from loneliness, and staring blankly into the distance with McCoy right behind him. Then Kirk looks at Spock (who is physically further away) and smiles, visibly brightening after Spock smiles faintly back.

I'm also thinking about how upset Kirk is by Spock's spore-addled interest in Leila in "This Side of Paradise," and even more by Spock's disinterest in him. Leila herself will eventually admit that she knows Spock would never enter into a relationship with her except via the sex pollen/docility spores, and previous to all this, she said Spock would be given no choice in all this. Spore-influenced Spock also begs Kirk to join them ("It's a true Eden, Jim. There's belonging and love [...] you'll come around sooner or later. Join us. Please"), and Kirk instead hatches a plan to force him out of the effects of the spores.

Afterwards, Spock bleakly tells Leila, "I have a responsibility to this ship, to that man on the bridge. I am what I am, Leila, and if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them." He admits to Kirk that falling under the artificial tranquillity of the spores is the closest thing to happiness he's ever experienced.

Kirk is more outwardly cheerful, expressive, and easy-going than Spock, occasionally admitting that he's lonely, but not much more, apart from the implications of how he explains romantic love in "Metamorphosis" ("Is he important to you, more important than anything? Is he as though he were a part of you? [...] By your feeling for him, you are condemning him to an existence he will find unbearable. [...] You may keep him here forever, but you will always be separate, apart from him"). It's only when he gets literal amnesia that he can admit that he's pretty sure he's never experienced happiness before.

The seething jealousy even in obvious dub-con circumstances and quiet, restrained unhappiness pervading their lives just feels like—well, so much. There are so many other cases, too, like when McCoy jokes about Spock falling for a computer (not an android, a literal computer) and Kirk gets visibly upset and jealous until Spock tells him in front of everyone that Kirk is irreplaceable, obviously. Spock spends an entire episode miserably jealous of an actual android love interest of Kirk's, and after McCoy tells him he fundamentally can't understand the agonies and triumphs of love Kirk experienced with the android, Spock waits for McCoy to leave then deletes his rival from Kirk's mind while he sleeps.

They aren't well, but they sure are something!

Had a very real, very scary thought about possibilities. If this is real, if Bobby really is dead canonically and Peter isn’t coming back as anything more than an executive producer, more of the cast than Angela is probably going to consider leaving before or during next season, even if the show gets renewed for a tenth season (which. *sigh* about that for right now). All of their posts calling him their leader, a dear friend, the rock of the cast essentially, and how they or Tim have spoken up about arguing against killing Bobby off because they don’t want him to leave. And the fact that Peter didn’t want to leave in the first place. If it were me, I would feel like fair game for an MCD as well, because if they can kill off the literal rock of the show and one of the executive producers’ character, they can pull the rug out from under any of the cast at this point. And idk about behind the scenes, but the schedule of filming going much later due to rescheduling tells me that the cast doesn’t get much warning. Angela apparently found out that Bobby was going to die from a SCRIPT. This has been poorly handled on so many levels, and if the cast values their peace of mind over trusting Tim to make better decisions for the rest of the characters, it would be totally possible that some of them would be prepared to leave of their own accord instead of being told they’re leaving with little warning or care paid to either their character or themselves as part of the cast family.

tulaytullah — a quaint, yet humble kingdom situated alongside the seaside that thrives with splendor throughout the day before retreating to its tranquility beneath the moonlight, like that of a soothing lullaby playing from a music box.

upon first glance, it appears like nothing more than your everyday kingdom. but, should you be drawn in by its radiant beauty, you’ll quickly come to learn that this place harbors much more beneath the surface — a bewitching charm unlike no other. from its strong-willed citizens to the veiled omnipresence of an eccentric god whose wisdom stretches beyond eternity, tulaytullah is a treasure trove of rich tales and ancient mysteries.

a majority of that can be ascribed to the ever-so benevolent rulers of the kingdom. these days they are far too occupied with caring for their newborn child and thus, finding a moment to speak with them is rare. before, the palace’s gates were always opened for the public to enter, allowing all the opportunity to stroll through the gardens, courtyards, and even the very halls themselves if they so pleased. transparency between a ruler and their people is of utmost importance to the king and queen, who have managed to achieve just that while also finding a good balance for privacy when needed. a commendable feat, especially for individuals such as them who could not be more different from one another.

I saw a staggeringly wrong post (I think from the same source as this take) about how TOS Kirk doesn't experience any meaningful suffering or angst, he just gets frustrated by challenges to his authority/command. The idea of him having real angst is just made up and projected onto him by fandom. Yes, this is the same James T. Kirk who feels the need to log this thought process: "No man achieves Starfleet command without relying on intuition, but have I made a rational decision? Am I letting the horrors of the past distort my judgment of the present?"

It feels almost like cheating to bring up the most obvious counter-examples tbh, but I actually find it really interesting that Kirk's most haunting fears/vulnerabilities throughout a bunch of episodes are so persistent and clear throughout the show as a whole. A major one, for instance, is his loneliness/dread of being abandoned to solitude. Ignoring everything except TOS:

"Dagger of the Mind":

HELEN: The machine wasn't on high enough to kill. KIRK: But he was alone. Can you imagine the mind emptied by that thing? Without even a tormentor for company.

SPOCK: He thought you'd like to know the treatment room has been dismantled and the equipment destroyed. KIRK: Thank you. MCCOY: It's hard to believe that a man could die of loneliness. KIRK [staring into the distance while the camera focuses on his almost blank eyes]: Not when you've sat in that room.

"Conscience of the King":

LENORE: At the party, you were such a brash young man. KIRK: And now? LENORE: Now somehow different. Not a ship's captain with all those people to be strong and confident in front of. You know, you're really very dear, aren't you? In some ways, very lonely.

MCCOY: Mr. Spock, the man on top walks a lonely street. The chain of command is often a noose.

"This Side of Paradise":

KIRK: Except for myself, all crew personnel have transported to the surface of the planet. Mutinied. Lieutenant Uhura has effectively sabotaged the communications station. I can only contact the surface of the planet. The ship can be maintained in orbit for several months, but even with automatic controls, I cannot pilot her alone. In effect, I am marooned here. I'm beginning to realize just how big this ship really is, how quiet.
