This is actually really interesting to me (especially as someone who has used SEO data involving Google searches as pertaining to user personalization factors involving personalized data (including geographical region) versus contextualized data (trending analytics, for instance), keyword data, etc. in some of my political discourse research). I am curious as to the wider contexts of these searches because I know that as much as those of us on the left want to believe that people who vote third party ideologically for reasons such as Palestine are a more influential force than they actually are, they are a fairly small minority even in swing states. So those people are not likely to be enough of a population to radically ask "change my vote" when they expected Harris to win and be self-righteous versus Trump winning and panicking like many of them (though not all) did in 2016 and I think more than are willing to admit are doing right now. I would imagine people who abstained entirely for some of the same reasons might be reconsidering, but why use those keywords? Sure, not everyone is used to how to use keywords in the most optimal way, especially based on generation, in a way those of us who grew up with search engines often take for granted. But I am interested in the wording here and the reasons behind it.
My guess without further context -- with the caveat people's knee-jerk reactions are often wrong and that is why data and fact-checking is so important -- is that without knowing the scale of how many people are Googling "change my vote" that it is a minority because the fact is if 5 people Googled that search query on October 5th and a 100 people Googled on November 7th, that graph reads the exact same way as if 5000 people Googled on October 5th and 100,000 people Googled on November 7th so an exponential increase in queries is not that useful when tracing trends in search engine queries without accounting for scale. One possible way that to bridge the discrepancy between what I talked about in the last paragraph and the possibility the graph does reflect a large scale change in searches in a way that is not being visualized in the screenshot is the the possibility undecided voters who abstained and changed their mind (again) are using keywords liked "changed" instead of "vote late" which would give them accurate results (namely, that they can't). But yeah, without more context, I don't know and that's interesting to think about but also something that might be really hard to study.

I'm going to McFucking Lose It
#the reason it can be hard to study phenomenon like this is that the people who make search inquiries like this are hard to interview bc no#one thinks that they aren't *good* at Google#and yes me too! I can talk about so many studies off the top of my head using everything from qualitative research methods to eye-tracking#software to study how people interact with search engines and it does not matter how educated you are -- people typically DO have certain#patterns when it comes to search engines that they are not aware of#yes you can get more precise in many cases but the first step is acknowledging that we all do not notice as much as we think we do#and keeping that in mind#(and the precision cases often involve familiarity#But THAT also gets compromised by the fact that since 2022#there have been such noticeable shifts in Google's search engine filtering algorithms that even lay people notice it#so some of the academic research about patterns in filtering are off now because that's the nature of dealing with digital objects -- your#object is always going to be outdated at some point. The value of that work is that it crystalizes a particular point in digital history#of technology#and THAT is highly important in terms of later scholars being able to trace a narrative of history and theory of technology in an age where#it can be difficult to document shifts using traditional research means#but at some point it is always going to have primary value as a historical artifact and not a comment on the times esp with the length of#time and rigor peer-review takes.#I am a meta-methodologist in my approach so that has less applicability to me in certain aspects of my work but with case studies?#yeah my PhD dissertation is on the role of algorithmic filtering in the 2016 US election and juxtaposition between discourse around#technology in that election and technical writing about it in terms of underlying assumptions about the nature of knowledge (epistemology)#that work in technological AND political rhetoric regarding how information filtering works#So I am acutely aware of the amount of changes that happened in search engines alone between when I defended my prospectus and when I#defended my dissertation are staggering#and it is still important to clarify something about a historical moment#but yeah that was a long rambly self-indulgent way to say researching this shit is hard and I would be REALLY interested if someone on the#more social science oriented side has ideas on how to go about studying this in a way that can be traced#actually yeah going to put this in the#academiaing#tech tag#tags for the tag rant alone

Schnee Week, Day 3: Weiss Ships
So I don’t actually have a finished fic or even a chapter to share today because until my sudden burst of creativity on Monday evening, I have been primarily focused on the next three chapters of Dishonored. (Roughly 31k words written so far across two chapters. It’s coming!) But one little thing I’ve been planning for a long time is on the back-burner and I thought I’d share an excerpt.
Way back at the end of 2019, pretty shortly after we met, @catalyswitch showed me a sketch she was working on of a Schneekos modern day AU and asked me for my thoughts.
This is the beginning of the fic I’ve been wanting to write since then.
                                                               *
Winter drives her (and her things) to campus, but Weiss moves in on her own. There’s some kind of important meeting — lots of covert messages on a blackberry, which is a thing these kinds of people still use — and Winter can’t delay any longer. It’s not like Weiss expected anything else.
Maintaining low expectations for others and high ones for yourself are sort of the Schnee motto. It saves a lot of disappointment in life, in general.
She decorates her room just fine on her own. Minimalism is another thing she’s grown accustomed to in the mansion mom gave up on renovating in between her fourth and fifth trip to rehab. Call the abandoned projects and clutter in the attic a metaphor for something, if you’re inclined to such dramatics.
Weiss has never had any need for those kinds of abstractions or distractions.
She hangs a single picture on her wall.
Unlike the family portrait that hangs in the dining room, this is casual. While that is carefully composed and well lit, this shows Weiss and Whitley amidst of a mess of wrapping paper, faces lit up with excitement and the soft glow of the lights from their Christmas tree. Winter is in the background, distributing the gifts. Mother sips some unknown liquid from a coffee mug.
Father is nowhere to be found, and the photo was surely taken by Klein. That’s clear enough in Weiss’s smile, which is confident and unrestrained.
Her posture is straight. Her eyes are bright.
It’s as if her past self was looking right out into the future, smiling at the person she is today.
First day of orientation, and she’s ready for anything.
                                                              *
Correction: the one thing Weiss Schnee was completely unprepared for is her roommate.
The girl is a whirlwind of chaotic confusion, and so is the rest of her family. At least, Weiss has to assume this mess of (noisy) people is somehow this girl’s family. None of them look alike. The two loudest (by only a small margin) are blond with smiles as big as their biceps.
None of them have really stopped talking since they burst into the room and began hanging all kinds of things from the walls on the other side of the room.
“What—” Weiss begins, but she has no idea where the question is going.
What’s there to ask?
“Yes, hello!” the person who is probably Weiss’s roommate — but looks much too young for it — shouts from just beneath the mattress she’s managed to get stuck underneath. One of the blondes lifts it off her, and she darts back out, flailing. “Hi! I am your roommate, Ruby. If that’s what your what was.” She stands at attention, hands on her hips, as if that justifies any part of this. “I’m the what’s what, if you were wondering.”
Weiss barely has time to catch her breath. She’s not sure this even counts as caught. “… what?”
“Exactly!”
The two blondes exchange looks and both laugh, but Weiss doesn’t think it’s very funny.
“You must be Weiss,” the man who technically looks old enough to be someone’s father says, holding out his hand to shake.
The other blonde keeps her arms folder over her chest. “Weiss Schnee, wasn’t it?”
She says it in the same way that everyone says it. As in, are you one of those Schnees, as in they know her father. As in they’ve turned on the news sometime in the past eight years. Everyone knows the Schnee family name; father hasn’t exactly been under the radar.
But all she says is, “That’s right,” while shaking the man’s hand. Firmly.
Always shake firmly. Father taught all of them that.
“Your father sure has his hands in a lot of pies.”
“He doesn’t, actually.”
“Doesn’t—”
“—know the first thing about cooking.” Another early lesson: know when to make your exit. Weiss stands abruptly, her stack of books completely forgotten on the bed. “Well I,” she begins, but she’s already made a fatal error.
Because the new roommate is noticing the books. “Oh, wow, are you majoring in political science?” She’s suddenly much too close to Weiss’s personal space, though for what reason is unclear. It’s just happening, and Weiss is along for the ride. “That’s so cool! I guess it makes sense, huh, because of your dad and everything.”
There’s the elephant in the room. The very large (very republican) elephant. “I chose my major for myself, actually.” It was not an easy or a quiet conversation, and certainly not one Weiss cares to repeat to these total strangers. “As I was just going to say, I have somewhere to be.” Somewhere far away from here, that is. Literally anywhere else. “It was lovely to meet all of you,” Weiss continues, not bothering to acknowledge the fact that she has learned absolutely none of their names.
                                                              *
The first place Weiss finds to hide that she doesn’t think her roommate will find her is the coffee shop. It’s clear from her demeanor that the child — very obviously too young to be at college, so perhaps some kind of prodigy which would explain the hyper active behavior and poor socialization — is in no need of further caffeination.
Coffee shops are also a useful place to disappear. It’s easy to blend in to a crowd of people all looking closer at their cups than they are each other.
Except of course for the table of jocks nearby. Weiss has absolutely nothing in common with any of them.
Even if some of them are aesthetically appealing.
                                                              *
On day three of avoiding her room and her roommate, Weiss discovers that said roommate — her name is Ruby, a fact Weiss intends to immediately forget again — does in fact require even further caffeination.
If she cared about this particular annoyance at all, she might be concerned about the state of her heart.
As it is, she’s more concerned with her own social standing being seen in public with an infant who only stops talking long enough to consume even more coffee.
“So anyway,” Ruby gasps, practically gargling her last gulp down. “What about you, are you excited for your first day of classes?”
Since Ruby is studying something else — what that is, Weiss can’t recall, although she’s probably repeated it more than once — and will come nowhere even close to a political science course, the answer is very obviously yes. Weiss tempers her excitement, somewhat, just for the sake of kindness.
“I’m overjoyed,” she says, almost neutrally.
“Yeah, me too.”
The jocks are there again today. They’re always there. Maybe the field they train on is nearby? Maybe they come here to study?
No, that doesn’t seem likely.
They’re all laughing (loudly) at something a boy with blue hair just said. Hopefully it was about something other than fashion decisions.
“Weiss?” Ruby says, as though she’s just repeating herself after perhaps even several attempts to get Weiss’s attention.
But all Weiss will offer in return is vague non-commitment. “Hm?”
“I was asking if you know them.” She points at the table that Weiss was very covertly staking out and Weiss slaps her hand back down. But Ruby just repeats the gesture with her other hand. “I only ask because you stare at Pyrrha a lot, and I was wondering if you wanted me to introduce you.”
“What, I do not,” Weiss answers without having any idea who Ruby’s even referring to.
At least.
Unless she means the redhead, because then yes. Weiss has been watching her off and on for the past three days, but surely so has everyone else in the cafe. They all have eyes after all.
Even if Weiss’s are currently bugging right out of her skull as Ruby jumps out of her seat. She can see what’s coming, but it’s already too late. “Pyrrha!” Ruby calls, her voice a clanging shriek.
Weiss recoils so hard from the sound that her eyes temporarily close. It’s such sweet relief safe in this darkness that she is reluctant to open them.
When she does, the redhead is there, at her table.
Her smile is confident but carefully contained. Her posture is relaxed and casual. Her hair is pulled back in a loose ponytail, with curls carefully framing her face.
“Oh,” Weiss breathes, before she can think better of it, before she can think at all. “Oh, hi.”
Years later, Weiss will wish she could remember what Pyrrha said next. But she doesn’t. She only remembers the way that smile pushed firmly into her chest, opening up an empty cavern of want that she had never known existed before.
The space inside, the empty need, felt almost limitless. It should have been awful.
But the one thing Weiss can remember from that exact moment is how much she was smiling.

“pass the stapler” (midoriya x reader)
Tumblr media
PAIRING: izuku midoriya x reader  WARNINGS: none, just fluff!  WORD COUNT: 1.6k
LINKS: ao3 | masterlist | requests are OPEN!
AUTHOR’S NOTE: this is my first fic for @bnhabookclub‘s hero camp bingo event! my bingo masterlist will be posted soon and updated as I make my way through the spaces. thank you to @shoutosplaything and @crack-head-lia for last minute beta reading this! and as always, special thanks goes to @gallickingun for being my rock and helping me with everything I do ♡
Your first day working at the hero agency was an eventful one-- work orientation, desk assignment, figuring out the coffee machine. The day would forever be known as the one where you started your dream job, but on top of that, it supplied another memory, one that will forever be ingrained in your mind: the moment when you laid eyes on Izuku Midoriya. None of the romantic comedies or cheesy romance novels could have prepared you for what you felt in that instance: the air being knocked out of you, the way everyone else in the room seemingly disappeared, and the undeniable feeling of a magnetic pull, urging you closer and closer to this stranger.
You felt like a teenager again, hopelessly in love with a person who barely knew you existed. The extent of your interactions with Midoriya was polite nods when you passed each other in the hallways, your heart had no business skipping a beat like it did every time those green eyes met yours. Still, you couldn’t help but swoon every time he’d sit at the table next to yours during lunch break. His presence was intoxicating.
When he first spoke to you, you felt a high like never before. It was a Friday afternoon, another day that you’ll never be able to forget, when Midoriya asked you to pass the stapler. You kicked yourself for how unbelievably cheesy you felt about it, seeing it as a truly magical moment. It became a routine, you watching the news in your apartment late at night, looking to see if the number one hero, Deku, had beaten down another criminal. If he did, that meant he had paperwork to turn in the next day, and that meant that you’d get to hear those five beautiful words pass through his lips: “can you pass the stapler?”
You found him positively perfect. Even attributes that one could see as faults, like his incessant muttering, his stubbornness to put himself before others, his scarred skin that resulted from that very stubbornness- no matter which way you look at him, you adore Izuku. You often found yourself dreaming the day away, simply yearning to touch his freckled skin and feel his lips on yours. The way his knuckles brush against your finger tips when you pass the stapler to him was addicting. Even though he wasn’t using his quirk, you swore you could feel electricity jolt from him to you.
This routine went on for a few months, and you had begun to accept that passing office supplies to one another would be the extent of your relationship with Midoriya. However, today, he came up to your desk, looking as dashing, yet nervous, as ever.
“H-hey, there, I have something to ask you…”
You reflexively reach towards the stapler on your desk, but he quickly interrupts you.
“Ah, no, I don’t need the stapler right now. But thank you.”
“Oh,” you reply. “Then… what can I help you with?”
You swear you can feel your heart beating out your chest. Because if he doesn’t want the stapler, what else could he possibly want?
Midoriya clears his throat and swallows, looking down at his scarred, calloused hands as he twiddles his thumbs. “W-would you wanna go out? W-with me? On a, um.. date?”
“Yes!” you reply, the word almost exploding from inside you.
Realizing how loud and slightly desperate you must have just sounded, your eyes widen with embarrassment as you begin to wheel yourself back from your desk, as if cowering away from the situation at hand.
 “I mean, sure, if that’s what you want…” you say, trying to sound as casual as possible. “Did you have anywhere in mind?”
Midoriya bites his lip and looks to the side. “I honestly didn’t think I’d get this far.”
You let out a giggle at his adorable bashfulness, releasing some of the pent of nerves inside of you. How he hasn’t realized that he’s the whole package is beyond you. In your eyes, he’s everything a person could ever want: kind, compassionate, selfless, and attractive as hell.
“We could go to the park nearby?” you suggest. “Hang out, walk around, and talk?”
He stops his muttering of possible date ideas to smile, definitely relieved that the responsibility of choosing was lifted off of his shoulders.
“That sounds great! Let’s do it.”
“It’s a date,” you confirm, really just wanting to make sure you weren’t making this whole scenario up in your mind. “Saturday afternoon work?”
“Yeah! Looking forward to it.”
A beat passes between the two of you before Izuku shifts uncomfortably, clearing his throat. “I, uh, actually do need to borrow the stapler as well.”
__________________________________________________________________
You’ve been on plenty of first dates before. You’ve gotten used to the slight jitters, the twisting of your stomach. But this was different. Your insides felt as if you were full of bubbles, bursting in anticipation and making you lightheaded. You attempt to regulate your breathing as you arrive at the park for your date. The air is cool as it blows against your flushed cheeks, already burning as you think about spending time with Izuku.
You’ve played out every possible scenario in your mind, creating an extensive list of conversation starters just in case there’s a lull in dialogue. As you’re going over your do-not-talk-about-topics in your head, you spot the green-haired hero sitting on a blanket at the top of a grassy hill. A classic wicker basket sits next to him, and your heart soars once you realize what Izuku has in store for you: a picnic.
As you walk up to him, he quickly stands up, greeting you with his signature bright smile. You can’t help but admire him in his more casual wear: jeans, a simple, loose-fitting t-shirt, and his classic red high-tops.
“H-hey!” he greets you. “Hope this is okay, but I thought we could have a small picnic? I know it’s a little random but-”
“It’s wonderful,” you interrupt, looking at the setup.
You have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming-- in what universe would you be presented with a perfect, park picnic date from the biggest crush you’ve ever had?
“Crunchy peanut butter with strawberry jam,” Izuku blurts out, snapping you out of your trance.
You look at him with confusion as he begins to open the basket and gestures toward the two sandwiches in plastic bags.
He begins to blush as he hands you your sandwich. “Um, I noticed that you always bring a PB&J to lunch at work. And I overheard you one day talking about why crunchy peanut butter and strawberry jam make the perfect sandwich…”
“They do!” you laugh as you begin to unwrap the sandwich. “It’s just science”
He laughs along with you, and the sound of his laughter gives you the same warm feeling as listening to your favorite song or drinking hot cocoa on a cold, winter’s day. It feels like coming home after a long trip. It feels right.
You spend the next couple hours eating and discussing each other’s passions: you learn about Midoriya’s unwavering adoration for All Might (which you had already known about, from studying your crush’s socials) and the unbelievable amount of pressure he puts on himself to be what others expect him to be.
“I just have to keep being better,” he says to you before taking a sip of water. “It’s what I owe to everyone who’s helped me get this far.”
You tilt your head to the side, hoping it’ll somehow let you see things from his perspective. “That seems like a lot of pressure to put on yourself. Maybe those people didn’t help with an expectation for something in return… Maybe they helped because it’s what you deserve.”
He looks to the side and bites his lip, shying away from opening up to you. You take a breath before reaching over and putting your hand on his. This skin contact feels somehow different than the hand-brushes from the past when you would pass the stapler. There is no shock of electricity, no jolt of energy. Instead, you feel more at peace than you ever did before. The world feels more at peace. You feel like as long as your hand is holding his, nothing could ever throw you off balance.
This gesture causes Midoriya to stiffen before meeting your gaze. When he sees your gentle and understanding smile, his shoulders relax and he lets out a breath that he was inadvertently holding.
“You know, I-I’ve been wanting to ask you out for a while now,” Izuku blushes as he rubs the back of his neck nervously.
“R-really?” you stutter, taken aback by this confession. Could it really be that he’s been admiring you as much as you’ve been admiring him?
“Yeah…”  he looks down and swallows. Sensing that he’s building up the courage to tell you something important, you try to give him a reassuring squeeze of his hand.
What could he be gathering up the bravery to say? Was he about to confess his feelings for you? Maybe he really does like you just as much as you like him. Or maybe it’s something much more unfortunate. Maybe he’s changed his mind after spending the afternoon with you. Maybe he-
“It’s just that I wasted so many blank pieces of paper by stapling them together so I could talk to you...”
The two of you break into laughter as the sun begins to set, the purple and pink hues matching the blush across both of your faces as you both realize that yes, you adore the other just as much as they adore you.

Trauma-Toons
Tumblr media
A shortish documentary called Cartoon College, directed by Josh Melrod and Tara Wray, celebrating  the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont, left me thinking about a bunch related or semi-related things. The (unaccredited) Center offers a two-year course leading to a Master of Fine Arts in cartooning.
First of all, is such a curriculum necessary? In the  applied-arts sense, probably not really, but as a supportive place for artists doing something that, the film proclaims, society at best ignores, or at worst sneers at, it shines. Kids and adults – including a man in his late 60s – act as though they are finally being allowed to crawl out from under the carpet.
Which by the end made me uneasy. The presumably self-selecting group projects a stereotype of cartoonists as universally depressed dweebs with godawful childhoods – salvaged suicides or serial killers in waiting. Somehow, I can’t believe this is a broadly accurate cross-section of those involved in an admittedly wacky profession.
Which then led me to recall how much the newspaper comics meant to me growing up, and to a lot of kids of that era. And it wasn’t just kids reading the “funnies”; consider the sophistication and  orientation of “Winnie Winkle,” “Brenda Star,” “Rex  Morgan” – these were works written with an adult audience first and foremost in mind.
They were the static YouTube of the time, and their hold on me has never relaxed. Will Eisner and his seven-page Sunday adventure  "The Spirit" were the highlight of my week. In the ‘70s, Eisner’s boundary-breaking foray into the “graphic novel” made my liver quiver.
Try reading bio-bits by and about Eisner and his studio  (which produced Jules Feiffer and Wally Wood among many others), and you don’t come away with the idea that the comics artists of the '40s and '50s  worried much about making a living, what their work “meant” or whether it reflected their traumatic youth – even though many of them went totally unrecognized. Carl Barks, who drew the iconic Scrooge McDuck comic  books, was not identified as their author until after he retired, all original  credit going to Walt Disney, whose talent was business and hype, not drawing.
I’ve always taken cartoonists seriously, in a way that, I  think, Eisner did. They aren’t little laugh generators snickering off to the side, but unleashers of big guffaws at what society is and does, as were Rowlandson and the political cartoonists of the 19th century. But somehow, along about “Superman,” we began to separate “serious” words from “frivolous” pictures in published art – a highbrow-lowbrow division and a reversal of the Renaissance, when painting and drawing ruled as the ultimate expressions of what the artistic mind could produce.
The aspiring artists at the Center for Cartoon Studies see  cartooning as a particularly personal form of expression, neither social commentary nor kiddie trifles, but the key to the release of their inner demons (or at least their under-the-bed monsters). Yet they fear, one and all, that they will forever be viewed as warped outsiders.
I don’t think that’s anywhere near true in the wider world. But then, we’re very confused these days in how we approach art: We don’t know how to look at it, don’t have any definition of what art is. We don’t need academic definitions, certainly, but we do need social definitions. These were assumed in past ages but are now fluctuating and scattered.
Science fiction author J.G. Ballard foresaw this social-aesthetic removal in his Vermillion Sands stories, where art of the future becomes something we cannot keep hold of. In the half-mad art conclave of Vermillion Sands, statues whisper meaningless phrases and poetry floats on the breeze, not because it’s all ephemeral, but because no one can pin down what it might or should proclaim.
Graphic novels and higher comic book prices, better digital  graphics programs and Art Spiegelman’s Maus have together given comics a more upscale image while removing them from  their common ground. That holds largely true of most public art. Is this a wonderful thing – art set free from relevance, to be whatever we say (or fail  to say) it is? Or have we sliced it off from life, made it an "other,“ a separate thing to worship like modern religion (or laugh at, given your inclination), to appreciate without underlying humanity?

Ever felt bored while playing the Sims? There are a vast number of options but nothing feels fun? Well, we have some news for YOU! Here’s yet another color-based legacy challenge for everyone to play! We worked really hard to come up with cooperative rules and guidelines for each generation, piecing them all together with a nice color theme that you can follow through however you wish! It’s no way perfect, and we might go back through things and tweak some stuff if people let us know about some issues. All Gens’ info is under the cut! Thanks for checking this out!

You can start the legacy as occult sims but don’t have to focus on their specific skill-building
Each heir needs to have at least two kids unless specified differently
This challenge is written with the idea of all/most of the packs are included—if you don’t have the packs needed, you’re welcome to skip/ignore the things required and dub in a similar option
It ends at Generation 10, but you’re free to continue on with 11+ by going back and doing the other options you didn’t do OR making things up as you go! (Anyone is welcome to create an official Get A Life Continuation challenge, just let us know first!)

college student! jackson x sugar daddy! mark // sugar daddy x baby socmed au
b a c k g r o u n d i n f o 🍓
jackson is THE popular kid despite him having his own set of financial problems. he lives with a foster family because his parents died in a car accident when he was 11, but still grew up to be a well-mannered, cheerful boy
mature 21 year old who knows his strenghts and weaknesses. very motivated and hard working, but tends to fall for the bad type rather than good influences. is also too nice and sweet to point out other’s mistakes and flaws so he usually goes along with whatever his friends do. has always wanted to move out because as much as he loves his foster family, he knows that they struggle with their own swt of problems as well and feels like a burden now that college fees are piling up
mark is a millionaire, successful bachelor at the fine age of 29. recognised for his success in starting and building his own business at 22, took him only 7 years to reach his current success of a multi-million enterprise in Seoul trading and exporting goods.
is a very mysterious figure to the press because he is extremely private about his life outside of work. lives alone, has no known dating history, only known family is his family in USA ands seems to be completely disinterested in relationships under than a tight-knit group of friends. the press would love to get some dirt on this successful businessman.
jjp are mark’s close friends and a power couple of Korea ( lgbtq+ rs are supported in korea in this au ) and have always wanted him to look for a partner. yugyeom, mark’s other close friend, also wants him to not be so lonely anymore since he’s pushing 30 already.
meanwhile, youngjae + bambam are jackson’s best friends. youngjae’s fam is jackson’s foster fam while the three of them all attend Seoul University tgt. they’re close friends because they all share an interest in music and just enjoy each other’s company. they’re the same age in this au, so they met at the usual freshmen orientation drinking session and bambam almost puked on jackson’s crotch. ever since then, they’ve been inseparable.
youngbam are also well known in the school - youngjae for performing on stage every year at the annual talent show while bambam is known for his cool style and being the vice president of the dance club.
p l o t 🍓
jackbamjae are joking arnd in their gc abt life after college when jackson finally tells them his plan to move out of his foster home after they finish their second year of college. yj ofc objects because he doesn’t see js as a burden, but respects jackson’s decision because js insists.
bambam suggests a sugar daddy website to get money. ofc, both of the other two question him on how he got to know such a site existed. he tells them that ten ( pres of the dance club ) got to know his bf through this site. bam tells them that it isn’t super shady or wtv and the men aren’t so bad at all
js says wtv and gives it a go, so he signs up with the help of bamjae. he has a basketball friendly match, so he rushes off after that
at the same time, mark’s bday is approaching. jjgyeom are planning a surprise for him and hopefully, it’ll include some sort of a date that mark will agree to go on. yugyeom had also come across the sugar daddy website by simply lurking on the nsfw side of the internet and jjp have learnt not to question him too much on what he does in his free time.
he found js’s profile and knowing mark’s type, immediately suggested the idea to jjp. jb, who’s been mark’s longest friend, says that mark might not completely be opposed to it because he knows that mark has been stressed lately and a way to let out that frustration would be good. jy, on the other hand, cautions that mark might not like the idea because mark is the kind of guy to value genuine relationships over meaningless hookups, not to mention paying someone for sex and whatnot. despite that, the three arrive at mark’s place on the night of his bday to surprise him
yg suggests the idea to mark after they’ve all had some dinner and mark obv gets mad at first. he says exactly what jy had said, but calms down after jjgyeom explain that they’ve all been worried about how he’s coping and don’t want him to be alone and stressed anymore. mark sees that his friends have good intentions and decides to give it a go, starting the convo with jackson over the website that night after all his friends have left
after about a week of weird dms and some actually good interactions over the site, jackson is about to give up because he hasn’t found anyone truly interested in talking and not just sex. then, he gets mark’s dm
the two hit it off immediately and they end up texting till 3am. they exchanged socmed accounts before they went to bed as well, and js decides to tell bamjae in the morning abt it.
they obv know who the hell mark tuan is and are freaking out over this. jackson rmbs that mark had told him not to spread this and realises that’s the reason why. he warns bamjae not to tell anyone, even their other close friends. bamjae suggest for him to keep texting and to even meet mark on the weekend.
they meet and it goes well and stuff, them slowly establishing their own sort of relationship. they’re more platonic than sexual most of the time, but they do look for each other when they’re horny and in need of release
one day, the press captures mark waiting for js after school at seoul uni + js getting into his car. they post an article with a caption insinuating that mark has a secret relationship, which he fires down with an instagram post about invading his privacy and posting false rumours. he does this because he’s scared that js might be affected.
js is affected, because he realises that he doesn’t mind being in a genuine relationship with mark at all. he tells bamjae ofc, and they help him to realise that he might have developed feelings for the older man. he freaks out because that isn’t part of the deal of being a sugar baby but he doesn’t want to cut mark off either
it’ll end happily, definitely, but the angst will come right after this and i hope it’ll be good :<

This isn’t really an intro as much as an UPDATE featuring a biography and some changes I’ve realised as I’ve gotten to know Leah’s character better, but given that I’d still recommend y’all give this a once over. Thanks to everyone for getting involved with her and my other characters, and I’m excited to do so much more with her. <3
BASIC INFO ;
Name: Leontine Artemisia Morgan
Nicknames: Leah (by select friends & family only), Madam Prez (slang)
Gender & Pronouns: cis female, she/her pronouns
Age & DOB: Forty | 14 February, 1980 | Anchorage, Kentucky
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Orientations: Bisexual / biromantic (with a lean towards women)
Relationship Status: In a ( secret ; open ) relationship with Princess Ivana of the Netherlands ( @ofivana )
Nationality: American
Religion: Agnostic
Neuroses: Undiagnosed Asperger’s syndrome (note: I, the mun, have diagnosed Asperger’s!)
FAMILIAL ;
Hometown: Anchorage, Kentucky
Father: Kenneth Morgan, CEO of Morgan Financial
Mother: Candace Morgan (d. 2019)
Siblings: Bocephus ( @hxll-0 ) and Elise ( @ofchampagnetears ) Morgan (b. 1992)
OTHER ;
Languages Spoken: English, Latin, French, Italian, German (incl. Swiss, Austrian and Bavarian German), Spanish, Portuguese
Educational Background: Institut Le Rosey, Harvard University, John Hopkins University
Occupational History:
1. Intern / Political Assistant at Capitol Hill (2002-06)
2. Representative for Maryland’s 2nd District (2006 special election — 2010)
3. Junior Senator for Maryland (2010-2016)
4. 45th President of the United States of America (20th January, 2017—)
Achievements: Youngest and first female president of the United States; shortest initiation in Society history. If I listed her political achievements we’d be here a while, folks.
THE SOCIETY ;
Codename: Adrasteia
Meaning: Adrasteia means “the inescapable,” which I chose as her label. It’s another name for Nemesis, the goddess of divine retribution, which i found quite fitting because she’s always managed to rise above people and attain what she wants, even if it is through using her parents’ money and power to her advantage at least in part. And now she’s the defender of the free world, in the most powerful office in the world — don’t make an enemy of the inescapable, for the inescapable will always get you.
Traditionalist or Reformist: Leah struggles to shoe-horn herself into either camp, but she supposes in general due to her own ideas that she’s some kind of reformist, even if that reform doesn’t include party islands and hedonistic displays. She prefers more power for women within the Society; more space for non-established families and for people to get in on their talent alone.
Goals In The Society: Her own advancement. To make her rowdy siblings see their own potential, and perhaps find a bond with them that feels less like she’s that cousin you don’t see often and don’t know very well. Ultimately, to be the Grand Archon, where she can make the most positive change. To use the Society to get rid of the Twenty-Second Amendment so she has more time to create further equally positive change for America.
Opinion On The Society: It’s something she was always meant to be part of, but something that needs to be tweaked to fit the time that it’s in. Some people’s definition of ‘tweak’ is too far, but ultimately the most important thing is that she’s in it. Certainly she values it as an honour.
PERSONALITY ;
MBTI: ENTJ-A
Enneagram: Eight, with a Seven wing
Temperament: Choleric
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Inspirations: Birgitte Nyborg (Borgen) | Kidz & SOS (Take That songs, inverse) | Peggy Carter (Marvel Cinematic Universe) | Official Secrets (film)
Tropes: The Ace, Armour-Piercing Question, America Saves The Day, The Chessmaster, Contemplative Boss, Married To The Job, Workaholic, Badass In Charge, Brainy Brunette, Deadpan Snarker, Iron Lady
YOUR MUSE AS ;
A piece of art: The Kiss by Gustav Klimt
A song: Under The Ladder by Mélovin
A book: How To Use Your Enemies by Baltasar Gracián
A movie: Official Secrets
A TV show: Borgen
A historical era: Ancient Greece if she had to choose one, but she’s more one to look to the future than the past.
A historical figure: Artemisia of Caria
A colour: Royal blue
An animal: Lioness (she’s got the name for a reason.)
YOUR MUSE’S DREAM ;
JOB: She’s sat in the Oval Office, folks, she’s doing it.
VACATION: Leontine doesn’t have time for vacations, especially not if she’s attending Society events, but if she did, she’d like to go to the Acropolis.
DAY: One day where Bo and Elise are calm; getting to go on a real date with Ivy and be proud of it.
AS A CHILD: To be President of the United States.
LAST NIGHT: I can’t tell you, because she didn’t sleep long enough to reach the appropriate stage and dream.
THAT THEY GAVE UP ON: She’s never given up on a dream. Never once, not unless she realises it was wrong in the first place. She’s not someone who gives up.
THAT THEY HAVE RIGHT NOW: Constitutional change; getting her siblings into the Society
BIOGRAPHY ;
TWELVE years — that was how long Leontine Artemisia was the sole daughter of Kenneth and Candace Morgan, but also how long it took them to forget why. Through generations of the Morgan bloodline the same issue had persisted; a work-ethic that was either partly or entirely based upon an unattainable ideal of perfection.
Which, in itself, led to relationships like the parents’ own. Lacking in healthy emotional expression ( particularly on the side of the born Morgan, less so in his softer-hearted wife ) and with at least some business element regarding a ‘practical’ or ‘advantageous’ match. It wasn’t an arranged marriage, not quite, as they had found each other — mostly — alone, but neither could it be said to be a ‘love match’ the likes of which fill the daydreams of any hopeless romantic.
And then, from there, they hadn’t realised how it would impact any child of theirs until it was too-little, too-late to do anything about it. When the nifty Morgan motto had already taken hold, dug itself into the young girl, going deeper with every comment Kenneth made about how she could be ‘better,’ or ‘how do you expect to be like me or your grandfather?’
It became Candace’s — being the far more empathetic parent, the one who was there when Leah fell and who had attached herself to her first-born in a way she would not attach quite the same with inevitable additions — goal to get her as far away from her husband’s influence as possible, so that she might have half a chance at coming fully into her own. Except, prior to achieving that goal, the terrors ( I’m sorry, the twins, but they were, and are, terrors ) came into the trio’s lives, and Leah was both no longer alone, and more alone than ever.
Which suited her fine, or at least she said it did. After all, she was still her mother’s favourite, anyone could see it. Could feel it, where Kenneth had turned his attention to the young babes to see which child would offer him the legacy he craved; because Leah’s goal — politics; the highest seat in the land, even then, regardless if she had to claw her way up there with her nails or not — didn’t particularly interest him at the time ( Morgan Financial needed an heir, and he was consistently frustrated at his eldest daughter’s disinterest ) and would interest him even less after she came back with European ideas from her next destination: the Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, where she would meet a whole host of future A-Listers and members of the Society, including one Étienne de Polignac.
When she returned from Le Rosey at the age of eighteen, her next destination was already settled: the famed Harvard University, to study political science. Of course, she could be nothing but the hardest worker, something she would not let her university boyfriend — as much as she loved him at the time — get in the way of; it was clear Kenneth’s message had gotten through to her ( too well, as she would never feel good enough, always striving to impress him, when it was impossible ) when she chose career over her love life upon graduation.
Because from a young age she had set her eyes upon the White House desk, organised her life around that ultimate dream; pursued law and civics, and abandoned the healthy social lives of others her age. While other members of her family could have been considered high-society socialites, all she knew was her own ambition. Quickly Leah herself became the pedestal for her siblings to follow — except, not her politics, as Kenneth would indicate by sending the twins to Phillips Exeter rather than Le Rosey — and was a point of pride when her parents decided she ought to go to public events; after all, she had to learn how to relate to people, didn’t she? Her first motto, and a tattoo she has that’s always hidden by her clothing, is: change your stars, if you try, you’ll succeed.
Leontine moved to Maryland after Harvard, where she worked as a political advisor at Capitol Hill for one of the Democratic representatives ( whilst balancing a second degree, in international relations, at Johns Hopkins University due to its proximity to Capitol Hill ) until she was of constitutional age to stand for election in the House. She won Maryland’s second district — rather than standing in her birth / home state of Kentucky — and then, upon turning thirty, became the junior senator for the state; however, these early political years were all overshadowed by one event: the war in Iraq, with which she vehemently disagreed, and which has continued to influence her strong anti-war stance throughout the rest of her political career.
‘The rest’ of her political career including her run for President in the 2016 election, resulting in the thirty-six year old defeating Republican nominee Donald Trump in the most resounding fashion since the Nixon landslide. And even then the opponent managed to win Massachusetts; not so here.
She grew up privileged, of course she did, and she’s found her balance between being at peace with and being very aware of what led her to where she is today: the Oval Office, the young trailblazer wherever she went. Leah Morgan’s ‘brand’ is record-breaking, perhaps ( after all, she very quickly charmed people to her favour to admit her into the society as a 25-year-old initiate, a Societal record that still to this day stands. )
Leah’s mother Candace, however, was killed in a ‘car crash’ last Thanksgiving, a tragedy which she has not processed; she hasn’t any understanding of how to deal with grief — none of the Morgans do — so, at some point, it’s all going to come back to her.
But she was raised on ‘this is good, but you can always do better,’ and that shows more than anything in this woman with a lot of dreams and even more ambition.

Tumblr media
did you hear how CAMILA THAYER is applying to columbia university as an ENGLISH major ?! the TWENTY year old is living in the WATT HALL. i heard that they got in because they are + CREATIVE and + PASSIONATE, but honestly i think SHE can be - RESERVED and -ARROGANT. they’re a real ACADEMIC. oh well, only time will tell if the SOPHOMORE will make it til the end.
full name : camila allen thayer

ethnicity : 1/2 ashkenazi jewish, 1/2 english

hometown : hampton , new hampshire & cheraw , south carolina
accent : twinge of a southern accent , but mostly a posh new england accent
languages spoken : english , conversational french

aesthetics : plaid skirts and knee socks , clawfoot bathtubs , sylvia plath poetry books , thin framed glasses , pink highlight , wandering through the met , film cameras , hand written letters + PINTEREST
character parallels : astrid sloan ( the politician ) , camille preaker ( sharp objects ) , amma crellin ( sharp objects ) , camilla macaulay ( the secret history ) , serena vanderwoodson ( gossip girl ) , donna sheridan ( mamma mia here we go again )
personality & headcanons
camila has always been a quiet individual , especially around those she doesn’t know . calm , cool , collected , many people’s initial impression of her is that she hates them due to her resting bitch face and the lack of acknowledgment she gives before she’s truly comfortable around a person
she does not open up easily , and doesn’t really know how to handle being loved . so she typically doesn’t let anybody get that close .
major abandonment issues and daddy issues . so she seeks validation from men and also if she lets you in be prepared to fucking stay
doesn’t party much because she prefers to stay in and study or be with her closest friends , she drinks but prefers small social gatherings with those she’s close to
has a nasty cigarette habit and shows no signs of stopping
her favorite season is the fall , and her favorite holiday is halloween
i think she’s v mysterious sort of ? like , this really pretty girl that keeps to herself mostly , and her small group of friends , but she’s got this alluring aspect of her that draws some near .. v greek mythology siren esque
very soft , but also not at all ? like wears skirts and knee socks and berets and flow-y white dresses and sits in coffee shops while it rains reading poetry BUT , she can be dangerous . seductive , arrogant , selfish , and quite emotionless at times . v ice maiden type , will use beauty to get what she wants in the most subtle of ways
so basically she comes off as this sweet , elegant woman with a soft smile who spends her weekends at museums , but when you get closer to her ( if you get closer to her ) you might see a much darker side to her
kind of into that witchy shit , so
background
camila was the second child born to marianne allen, though her older brother has a different father. her brother was born when marianne was just seventeen, running away from her perfect new hampshire home and her perfect new hampshire family to raise the child with his father in a small town in south carolina
they had planned to run away and meet in south carolina , though the father never showed . so it was just marianne and this baby boy , but it wasn’t long before marianne found herself pregnant again , another local farmer boy , thomas thayer
so camila was born , and it was the four of them in this tiny home that barely fit all of them , and marianne was just shy of twenty and didn’t even want to be a mother , so life wasn’t all that great for the thayers .
camila’s mother was never very maternal , and her father was a drunk . he didn’t truly love marianne , nor did he love camila very much . he especially didn’t love her brother , who wasn’t even his child .
camila and her brother stuck together , a dynamic duo of sorts . they were best friends and had each other’s backs through anything . at night , when they could hear their parents fighting , they would cuddle up in bed together and talk about their happiest thoughts , the lives they wished they had , so on .
at seven , thomas thayer decided to call it quits . he left in the night without so much as a goodbye , and though he had never felt particularly close to camila , camila felt close to him . it was her father after all , and she craved his attention , his validation .
at nine , her grandparents in new hampshire were finally able to locate them . getting cps involved , they were granted full custody of the kids , and camila and her brother were taken away from their mother and put into a new , grandeur home with these old people they’d never even heard about before . it was not a welcomed change , though it would soon be .
the first thing she discovered at her grandparent’s home was her grandfather’s library . he was a retired professor at dartmouth , and had an entire room full of literary classics , academic journals , and other first edition books . as a child , camila was not allowed in without his supervision , though she often snuck in without permission .
she was put into private school where she was expected to achieve excellent marks and commit to extracurriculars , though she was so behind in her schooling due to the underprivileged education system she’d faced in south carolina , that it took her a while to get back on track . though once she did , she excelled . they found that camila was incredibly gifted in creative and liberal subjects , such as art , english , and history . still , she excelled in math and science , though had to put forth a little more effort .
she took up horseback riding and tennis , but nothing could replace the comfort she felt in cuddling up with a good book from her grandfather’s library , in front of their grand fire place with a mug of her grandmother’s hot cocoa , or playing the piano in her grand parents’ grand hall
though she lived a life of luxury , her and her brother spent two - four weeks every summer going down to visit their mother . each year , as she got older , she began to realize just how broken her mother was , and truly began to understand why her grandparents felt the need to take her children from her .
camila , though not necessarily a tomboy , had always surrounded herself with boys . all her best friends were boys , and she hardly ever got along with her girl classmates . perhaps it had something to do with growing up so close to her brother , and often befriending his friends .
when she was sixteen , though , her guy friends started seeing her differently . boys , in general , began to really notice her . this was the first time she realized she was closed off to love . she had a boyfriend during her junior year of high school , and on the night he told her he loved her , she simply responded “ no , you don’t . ”
anyway ! getting accepted into columbia was a dream come true , though no one was all that surprised . she’d also been accepted to dartmouth ( her grandparents’ alma mater and where he taught , and where he’d urged her to go ) and brown , but something about new york city was enticing . she’d always lived in small towns , under twenty thousand people , and moving to a big city with millions seemed like a nice change of pace
she has made one close knit group of friends during her freshman year , though she’s still only a sophomore and we know how those things change . nonetheless , if you weren’t one of those people , you probably wouldn’t know who she was , because she didn’t get out much ( mayhaps she was seen around campus though )
wanted connections !
alright enough about camila if you got through all that i’m so sorry KJAHKSJGH but ! i have quite a few connections i’d love
the close friends she made freshman year . these would be pretty much the only people camila hung out with last year , and though things can change , the only people she’ll hang out with at the start of this year . i imagine this group to be mostly guys ( though not necessarily exclusively ) , because she tends to befriends boys as opposed to girls ? i’d say about 5 people ! ( 1 / 5 )
her number one best friend . this would have to be a male or male presenting muse , as camila has never found herself that close to a girl , reasons unknown tbh , she just gets along with boys better IDK inspo : ( x , x )  ( 0 / 1 )
close girl friend . that being said , every girl still needs her girlies . so she’d be fairly close to this girl , even if she doesn’t open up that much , perhaps the girl feels like she can open up to camila ? this can all be plotted out ! i feel like camila is a v good secret keeper , she doesn’t talk all that much so you can expect her to keep anything safe lmao ( 0 / 1 )
toxic relationship . sooo tbh this gotta be with a muse who is not a good guy , because camila is not that good of a gal ? . i see this being sort of on again , off again ? i’m not sure if either of them truly feel anything for one another , but they must feel something that keeps them going back to one another . though camila doesn’t really open herself up to love , she’s not necessarily closed off from relationships . ya girl needs to be satisfied and she ain’t the type to sleep around ok ? anyway i see them being really possessive of one another and having p explosive fights , definitely not right for each other and yet !!! also just to be clear , i see them as mutually bad for one another it’s not one sided ! just give me this angst pls . inspo : ( x , x , x , x ) ( 1 / 1 ) lukas tozer
unrequited crush . this would be unrequited on the other muse’s behalf . open to m/f/nb and whether or not camila knows there is a crush there can be plotted out ! basically this just goes along with the hc that camila is very mysterious and allurring from afar , and that those who don’t know her all that well tend to be drawn to her and a lot of times will romanticize her ? but also for extra angst i am possibly thinking that the two are v close and camila does know and won’t let them like her buT we can figure it all out . lmao .  anyway ya inspo : ( x , x , x  , x ) ( 0 / 1 )
also just general plots i’d love to see : someone she tutors in english or journalism or literature anything regarding that sort of subject , bad influence / someone determined to get her out of her shell ,  enemy plots !! gimme girls who think she’s a snob or boys who think she’s a bitch or everything in between , study buddies , girl crushes because camila is bi and thinks every girl is pretty , give me anything under the sun tbh i’m open to so much

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following Monday, the club you resided over was ready to meet. The food was ordered, the room reserved, the guest speaker had arrived and you’d talked to him for a little bit. The guest speaker started to go around the room before the meeting actually began, and was talking to them while you got the presentation set up.
“So do you also wear a cape?” Stephen suddenly said from beside you, making you jump slightly. He was so close to you you had no idea how he got there, or when, and why you didn’t notice.
“What?” you asked, confused.
“Oh, I just noticed your course load is rather heavy and you manage all this. I was just wondering if you also wear capes when you’re saving the day and being a superhero,” he said with a faint smile.
You shook your head and laughed before going back to the screen.
“I’m hardly a hero. Just a college student with zero social life and a lot of late nights,” you muttered.
“Sacrifices, huh?” Stephen murmured.
“Yep. But I’m sure you know all about that, being in the same boat I’m in.” You glanced down at the time. “Shoot, only got five minutes. Okay, can you sign this sign in sheet real quick so I can round everyone up?” you asked, handing him a clipboard. He scratched his name and email and you looked at it. “Strange? Your last name is Strange?”
“Yes? Why? Is that… strange to you?” he asked, cocking an eyebrow.
“Other than the really bad pun, no. It’s… I like it.” You smiled fondly to yourself. “You do realize you’ll be Doctor Strange, right?” you asked, laughing a little.
“The thought had crossed my mind,” he said cheekily before you shooed him away to go sit and you called attention to the room to get the meeting going.
----------------
“Did you read?” Loki asked, leaning over towards you just before class.
“Yeah, why? Did you not?”
“I did, I just thought this was stupid. I wanted to hear your take,” he said casually.
“Oh… Well I suppose it’s a little… how do I put this… very rose colored glasses,” you said, trying to decide if that was the right way to word it.
“You’re being too kind. This was optimistic garbage. The first three chapters are empty…”
“Have fun telling that to our professor,” you said, reminding him of the class discussion.
“I have no problem telling her that I think this is utter crap.”
“I can’t wait to see what she says,” you said with a coy grin.
“Believe it or not, Y/N, you can stand up to people,” he retorted. “It does happen.”
“Hey, I stand up to people all the time,” you snapped, frowning.
“You don’t seem the type,” Loki said with a bit of amusement in his voice.
“I just stood up to you, didn’t I?”
“Prove it then, when the professor starts this discussion, tell her how you really feel. Don’t sugar coat it either,” he pressed.
“Fine. Easy. Sharing my opinion with the class, I do it all the time.”
“Good, then this should be like a walk in the park,” he noted before folding his hands behind his head and leaning back.
The professor dashed into the classroom, threw her briefcase down, grabbed out her book, checked the time, and called attention to the class. “Alright everyone, what did we think of those first three chapters?”
For a moment, everyone was quiet, too shy to say their piece.
“Anyone? Did anyone like it, love it, hate it?” she asked as she stood at the podium.
Loki glanced to you before raising his hand quickly. “Y/N has something she wants to share about the book,” he proclaimed.
“Oh?” the professor said, turning to you on Loki’s right. You shot him a glare full of daggers before you cleared your throat.
“I, uh… I thought it was wildly and hopelessly optimistic. I mean, they live in horrid conditions but somehow cling to this odd notion of hope that somehow everything will be okay, that someone will come rescue them. I just don’t see how that’s plausible… It felt very… childish to me. No adult would think this way. No adult would look at their situation and say ‘everything’s okay’.”
“Interesting, so you think it’s--”
“Bad. I think it’s bad. The grammar is just… did he even learn grammar? The story jumps around and I can’t tell where we are, and when I can tell, it’s just total shit. If you picked this book as a starter to say ‘It will get better from here’, good, I hope so. Or if you picked this as an example of a crappy book, then job well done.”
With that, you sat back in your seat and Loki glanced sideways at you, giving you an approving smirk, almost as if he were proud.
------------------------
Later that night in your dorm, between your studies, you checked your email. Your advisor had sent you an internship opportunity. Well, to be correct he sent it to all the psych majors, which meant Wanda got it too. You didn’t think she would be interested in something like this. It was clinical psychology and she wanted to work with schools, children, counseling. This was definitely more up your alley. Still, you wondered if she would even try for it.
You emailed your advisor and stated you were interested and wanted to see if you could get an interview for the spot. Within ten minutes he replied and gave you all of their information to set it up yourself. You called the company and secured an interview for next week. If all went well, this could very well be the company you did an apprenticeship at, or even got you into medical school.
---------------------
The next day you were back at class with the science trio, happily taking physics notes. As soon as class ended, the four of you began walking out of class together when a younger kid came bouncing up. He had to be a freshman… maybe a sophomore. He looked really young, but then again who were you to talk? You were nineteen and everyone else in your class was twenty-one and up.
“Hey, Petey,” Tony said as he greeted the bright-eyed young man.
“Who’s this Tony?” you asked politely.
“Guys, meet Peter Parker.”
“Is he…?” you asked, not sure where to take the question, just hoping Tony would fill in the gap.
“Oh, hey guys. Nice to meet all of you. Wow, this is great. Tony talks about all of you all the time,” Peter said, his words tumbling out like a flood.
“Really?” you asked, giving Tony the side eye.
“Pete here is a sophomore in my robotics class,” Tony explained. “He also shares the bathroom across the hall from Bruce and me.”
“Oh, very cool. Nice to meet you, I’m Y/N. This is Bruce, and Stephen,” you said, introducing everyone.
“This is awesome. I don’t have a lot of friends, well not here on campus. See I tested out of senior year so I graduated early…”
“Just like Y/N,” Tony noted, giving you a pointed look.
“Yeah, how about that,” you mused watching the brunette boy walk backwards in front of all of you. “What’s your major?”
“Double majoring. So far it’s computer science and physics.”
“Oh wow, Tony, a man after your own heart,” Bruce joked, pushing his friend.
“Har-har. Mock if you want but Pete here is the real deal. He might even be as good as me,” he stated, impressed.
“Is there room for anything besides your ego in that head?” Stephen suddenly asked from beside you as he leaned forward to address Tony.
“Just my great fashion sense and the ability to land any woman,” he informed confidently.
“Oh, is that all?” Stephen asked with an amused eyeroll.
“Sounds like you’re doing some great things, Pete. That’s awesome. We’ve got a science club if you’d want to join,” Bruce offered.
“Who’s the cult leader now?” you asked, eliciting a shy smile from Bruce.
“You still are,” Tony interjected with a smug face. “We’re just followers. Big difference.”
“Oh, right. More money being a leader, I forgot,” you teased before making your eyes cross to give him a stupid and goofy face.
“So Y/N, you graduated early too?” Peter asked as he fell in line with the four of you.
“Yeah I--”
“Graduated early?” Tony interrupted, sounding floored. “She could barely drive a car and she was coming to college with us. Imagine my surprise when this little freshman suddenly shows up on orientation day.”
You blushed slightly while Stephen slid his eyes towards you in curiosity. He had no idea you were younger than him. The way you carried yourself, your knowledge, your class level -- it all seemed like a junior or senior. He was suddenly even more intrigued than he had been.
“It wasn’t that big of a deal, Tony. We knew each other before I got here,” you reminded.
“Yeah, but I was pretty pissed that you came and joined us. Made me and Banner here look like trained monkeys.”
“Are you sure that was Y/N’s doing?” Stephen asked, making you, Peter, and Banner chuckle.
“You all can laugh all you want. I’ll remember how much you mocked me when I’m a famous billionaire.”
“And you’ll remember how much we love you,” you said lovingly as you wrapped an arm through his and leaned your head on his shoulder, looking up at him.
“If this is love to you, I’d hate to see what it’s like when you don’t like someone,” Tony retorted sarcastically. “Speaking of, I’m off to my lab.”
“You mean your super secret lab that no one is supposed to know about?” you asked.
“Yes, that one.”
“Wait, lab? Secret? Oh, Mr. Stark you gotta show me this!” Peter requested excitedly as he stepped back out in front of all of you again.
“Okay, kid, don’t call me Mr. Stark, makes me feel old. That’s weird… Secondly, you can’t see it, it’s a secret.”
“Well who all knows about it?”
“Well now, all of you,” he said with an eye roll.
You laughed. “He’s being a drama queen. Only Bruce and I have been to it. See, Peter, freshman year, towards the end of spring semester Tony broke into one of the labs in the old science building. It was an old lab, no one used it, hardly any equipment in there. It was one of the ones in the basement, right?” you explained as you walked.
Pete nodded, hanging on your every word.
“Well… he wasn’t authorized to use it, obviously. It’s considered trespassing. Tony worked in there for about three weeks. He got a project built for one of his classes. It was a really cool invention. But one day, he came back and…” You paused, having to laugh a little. “And the lock had been replaced with a new one, with a key in an envelope sticking to the door.”
“Holy… So was there a note or anything?”
You shrugged and shook your head. “No. No one from the faculty has contacted him, and no letter or anything has ever been left there. We just all came to the silent understanding that it’s Tony’s lab.”
“That’s freaking awesome!”
“Don’t get too excited,” Tony said, raising his hand.
“Why? Don’t want him to follow your criminal behavior?” Stephen remarked with a raise of an eyebrow.
“Hey, I didn’t do anything illegal.”
“Except trespass…” Stephen noted.
“Okay, fine. I broke into an empty lab for space and tools to build something for a project that got me grant money. Sue me,” Tony snapped.
“Boys, boys. Don’t fight. Tony, Bruce, let’s go to the lab. Stephen, I’ll catch up with you later, okay?” you said as the three of you started to veer away from Stephen and Peter.
He waved a small wave at you and smiled. “Yeah, sounds good.”
“It was nice to meet you, Peter,” you stated sweetly.
“Yeah, you too, Y/N,” he said as he blushed before rubbing his neck.
Henry David Thoreau
Who: Henry David Thoreau
What: Author, Philosopher, Abolitionist, Activist, Naturalist, Critic, Surveyor, Yogi, Historian...ah, Jeez, what wasn't he?
Where: American (active largely in the US)
When: July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862
Tumblr media
(Image description: a photo of Henry David Thoreau from 1861, it is obviously in black and white but has faded to sepia. He is a white man in a jacket and what appears to be a scarf or cravat. He has a long, tired face, circles around his eyes. He has a thick beard and mustache and slightly messy hair, his hair is dark but graying.  End ID)
You have probably heard this name even if you don't know why. He is best known  for his memoirs, essays, and his role in the founding of the Transcendentalist movement. His progressive philosophy remains relevant to this day. His influence has lasted well over a century and he served as inspiration for the likes of JFK, Martin Luther King Jr., Hemingway, Tolstoy, Shaw, Gandhi, among dozens of other names of equal note.
Thoreau was a Transcendentalist through and through, meaning he believed in the inherent goodness of humanity and nature in conjunction with science, and the power of the individual. His writing is generally practical, thoughtful, detailed, and observant, and he wrote extensively on a number of subjects. Perhaps most notably on environmentalism (he is one of the inspirations for and a precursor to the 20th century environmentalist movement), nature, ethics, simple living, direct action, civil disobedience, abolition, tax resistance, anarchy, among countless other topics.
Thoreau's most famous and popular works include Walden, which is the published version of of the diary Thoreau kept over his two year social experiment at Walden Pond (written beginning in 1845, published in 1854), "Civil Disobedience,"  which helped both Gandhi and Dr. King form their philosophies, and states that in an unjust society the just must rebel, (it was originally titled "Resistance to Civil Government or Civil Disobedience", 1849), "Walking" an instruction manual on how Thoreau thought, observed, and wrote (1862), "Slavery in Massachusetts", a speech given at a rally to protest the re-enslavement of escapee/fugitive slave Anthony Burns (1854) and Excursions, collection of essays, published posthumously in 1863 with biographical introduction by fellow author and Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson.  He also wrote on John Brown and his execution ("A Plea for Captain John Brown" [1859], Remarks After the Hanging of John Brown [1859], and The Last Days of John Brown [1860]).
It has a white multi-paned window and a brick chimney in the back. The whole cabin is not much taller than its door. Behind it is a shed or outhouse.  They are surrounded by trees. Touching one of the closest trees is a brown metal statue of a man walking, presumably Thoreau. End ID)
Probable Orientation: Gay ace or possibly aroace with a desire for a male QPP.
I am very confident in Thoreau's asexuality, if a little shakier on his romantic orientation. As far as anyone knows (and his life has been repeatedly and heavily scrutinized since the 19th century) Thoreau never had a romantic or sexual partner. He was a public figure with a wide circle of friends, someone would have known at some point during his life and if somehow a partner escaped notice the historians who dedicated their lives to studying his life specifically would have uncovered them. Thoreau wrote on male/male relationships, some more platonic, some queerplatonic, some vagulely romantic, none sexual.
Thoreau, like Elizabeth I, is one cishets hold onto, turning away from the idea he could be anything but heterosexual regardless of the evidence to the contrary.  Like Andy Warhol he is one exclusionists refuse to acknowledge was ace, although they have even less of an argument here. Many aphobic fans of Thoreau are terrified by the idea that maybe, just maybe, the thing Thoreau loved most was nature. Some outrageous arguments from either side include: one historian claimed a poem Thoreau wrote for a man was actually meant for that guy's sister, some say he was being hip in writing about Achilles, some say he was too repressed to have sex, especially since he was gay. One blogger got heated in his admantness that Thoreau wasn't ace but was "a human being with feelings and needs." Nice aphobia there, dude.
But here is the thing about any of those arguments: Thoreau broke every other rule in his culture. He was not afraid to be different, and separated himself from society.  He was all about the individual breaking away from society and its traditions and going with your human nature. Thoreau did what he believed to be right.
He had a following, many friends and aquaintences, almost certainly suitors, he spent a lot of time alone in the company of men he seemed to find attractive e.g. Tom Fowler (who was his sole companion and guide through Maine) and Alek Therien (who visited Thoreau alone at Walden). I firmly believe that his percieved "prudishness" was not artificial but came from a genuine disinterest and failure to even really understand sexual attraction (his journals imply as much, you will see). If he did sleep with any of these men Thoreau never documented it, not even in his own journals. But what he did articulate in letters is that society's refusal to discuss sex/physical relationships was proof of its problems. Sex was natural so dismissing it wasn't.
His feelings about sex are contradictory, he thinks it must be natural but he also finds it repulsive and dirty. He makes note at one point of how beautiful pollination is (he is quoting and translating J. Biberg but agrees with the sentiment and indeed only uses the quote to prove his point on the beauty of sexless flowers), but he vilifies or dislikes human intercourse. Thoreau seems to like the idea of sex without the sex, he likes closeness more than intercourse. He wants to like sex but can't, the closest he gets is the desire for these things to be open.
Quotes:
Hang onto your hats. There are some long ones here, but Thoreau, like Chopin, is pretty overtly ace. Like he couldn't make it clear without waving an asexual pride flag, would be hard considering it was invented in what? 2010? And Thoreau had already been dead 148 chaste, chaste years.
"What is commonly honored with the name of Friendship is no very profound or powerful instinct...I do not often see the farmers made seers and wise to the verge of insanity by their Friendship for one another. They are not often transfigured and translated by love in each other’s presence. I do not observe them purified, refined, and elevated by the love of a man…I do not often see the farmers made seers and wise to the verge of insanity by their Friendship for one another. They are not often transfigured and translated by love in each other’s presence. I do not observe them purified, refined, and elevated by the love of a man…Nor do the farmers' wives lead lives consecrated to Friendship. I do not see the pair of farmer Friends of either sex prepared to stand against the world...Even the utmost good-will and harmony and practical kindness are not sufficient for Friendship, for Friends do not live in harmony merely, as some say, but in melody. We do not wish for Friends to feed and clothe our bodies,--neighbors are kind enough for that,--but to do the like office to our spirits…[the ideal friendship] will make a man honest; it will make him a hero; it will make him a saint. It is the state of the just dealing with the just, the magnanimous with the magnanimous, the sincere with the sincere, man with man.”
-Henry David Thoreau, from his journal 1839. This entry on friendship the hope for something deeper than what most people call by that name, but still looking for friendship. He is looking for a partner, an emotional, spiritual, partner. This quote could be read as romantic or queerplatonic. You know which one I am leaning toward, queerplatonic, especially because he specifies these relationships as unique from marriage (which he equates in other texts with sex and maybe romance) also he was writing while on a trip with his brother, John, to whom he would later dedicate the publication after John's death in 1842. But it could easily also be a sexless romantic relationship, what he is looking for is not explicitly either.
The following are all from 1852 letters written by Thoreau to his friend and proofreader Harrison Blake. One of these letters was overtly written on the subject of "Chastity and Sensuality" and contains his complicated feelings on sexuality:
"What the essential difference between man and woman is, that they should be thus attracted to one another, no one has satisfactorily answered."
(Note: self explanatory)
"If it is the result of a pure love, there can be nothing sensual in marriage. Chastity is something positive, not negative. It is the virtue of the married especially. All lusts or base pleasures must give place to loftier delights...The deeds of love are less questionable than any action of an individual can be, for, it being founded on the rarest mutual respect, the parties incessantly stimulate each other to a loftier and purer life, and the act in which they are associated must be pure and noble indeed..."
(Note: in the above quote he seems to believe that in marriage sex must eventually stop because there is something better. As if they have gotten the sex stuff out of the way.)
"Love and lust are as far asunder as a flower-garden is from a brothel.
(Note: this was part of his description for his disdain for human sex vs human love, his confusion about sex but love of human relationships. It is part of that desire for sex without sex thing I mentioned but harsher than his tone in a later letter.)
"'The organs of generation, which, in the animal kingdom, are for the most part concealed by nature, as if they were to be ashamed of, in the vegetable kingdom are ex posed to the eyes of all ; and, when the nuptials of plants are celebrated, it is wonderful what delight they afford to the beholder, refreshing...'"
(Note: this is Thoreau quoting and translating J. Biberg. Part of the same letter as the brothel line. In this letter he discusses how perturbed he is by sex and lust, but how it should be something beautiful. He celebrates pollination, while finding human sex distasteful, again sex without sex.)
"The intercourse of the sexes, I have dreamed, is incredibly beautiful, too fair to be remembered. I have had thoughts about it, but they are among the most fleeting and irrecoverable in my experience."
(Note: Also self explanatory)
(Image description: the original title page of Walden. It has an illustration on it drawn by Thoreau's sister Sophia. Above the illustration it reads "Walden; or Life in the Woods by Henry D. Thoreau, Author of "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers". Then is the illustration showing Thoreau's cabin, it looks very much like the modern replica if with a slightly different treeline.  There is a path leading from the cabin down to the bottom of the image directed at the words below. The text continues after the drawing "I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to brag as lustily as chanticleer in the morning, standing on his roost, if only to wake the neighbors up. -Page 92. Brazilian Elections - Let’s talk about  Fernando Haddad
Alright, so. Elections this year and we’re in a big mess, right? The new plot twist to our ever changing political scenario is Fernando Haddad, who happens to be one of the only politicians I actually like, so i’m gonna use this post to talk about his work so y’all can get to know him better since he’s not that famous outside of São Paulo. First of all, for all of you who have no idea what i’m talking about, let me catch you up: Lula (our ex-president) is still, ya know, in jail. For corruption and stuff. We can debate that more thoroughly in another post. Problem is, he wants to run for president again (he wanted before he was arrested already), and technically by some legal standards he might, cause his sentence hasn’t really been contested in every possible court, which is to say that even though his chances of them being overthrown are VERY small, it could still happen and therefore there’s a legal breach there that could allow him to run for president. And bOY is he popular at it - he was leading all the polls around the country these past few months, he was at the lead with nearly 40% of the votes at the last poll (published on the 21st/august). But there has been a debate for months now on whether he’d appoint someone else as a candidate in his place in case the most likely thing happens and he can’t run... And we kinda got the answer a few weeks ago - he didn’t appoint someone else, but he picked his vice president: Haddad, from his own party. Which is to say, in case he is barred from running, Haddad will likely be taking his place. [in the very surprising scenario where Lula DOES run Haddad would not be vice president anymore cause they have a deal with another party and then Manuela D’avila, another ex-candidate for the presidency gets the job cause she’s now supporting Haddad as kinda vice-vice president but that’s a whole other matter). So let’s talk about Fernando Haddad.
Quick background: Haddad is the son of a Lebanese immigrant and graduated in law school (and is a certified lawyer). He's also got a masters degree in economy and a doctorate in philosophy, all at USP, which is like, one of the best universities in Latin america. He’s also a teacher there in Social Sciences and currently a teacher at another private university. In public office, he has been the Minister for Education for 6 years of Lula’s government and Mayor to Brazil’s biggest city, São Paulo, from 2013 to 2016. I’m not saying you need any of those titles to be any good at the job (I mean, just look at Lula I guess) but we sure have to say Haddad came prepared for the fight talking about ground knowledge.
As the Minister for Education Haddad invested mostly in making the access to universities broader - it was his government that created ProUni (a program that provides government scholarships to poor students in private universities), and re-designed FIES (the financing and credit system for poor students to pay for universities) making it easier for people to pay (less interest rates, more time). During his time we also got 14 new public (free) universities and other kinds of educational centers making the number of available spots go from about 140K to 218K. He was also responsible for reformulating ENEM so that it could start to become a sort of brazilian SAT, now accepted as an entrance test to several universities that all had different tests (and you had to take all of them and pay for all of them if you wanted to apply to multiple places). When he started, Brazil invested about 3,9% of our GDP in education. At the end of his run, we were investing 5,1%. The PISA results showed Brazil among the 3 countries that had evolved the most in education during those years (yeah, we were still pretty low on the rank, but we can’t say it wasn’t working). So education is quite his thing, but that’s not all.
As a Mayor, Haddad had a clear vision for the city that involved making it more livable - his slogan said “more human”. The ideia is based on studies that say once the citizens have a sense of personal relationship with the place they inhabit the whole area starts to become safer (and also better taken care of, obviously). And that seems obvious but São Paulo had some MAJOR problems of livability.
Imma list some of my favorite projects. For starters, Haddad changed the lightning of a big part of the city to LED lamps (they’re way brighter so the sense of safety is enhanced cause no dark alleys and stuff AND they’re more efficient so we also started saving energy) [x]. Then he created bike lanes and more bus corridors to make public transport faster and so that people could actually use BIKES in the damn city without too many risks (the number of people who use bikes here grew over 60% in a couple of years, who could have guessed it [x]). He then reduced the speed limits for several streets and speed lanes. That was MASSIVELY impopular, but he said he didn’t care if people hated him as long as it worked in the long run - and, lol, it did. With all of that he reduced accidents and deaths on traffic in the city by 15% overall and by half in specific areas [x] [x], and most interestingly: São Paulo dropped over fifty fucking places on international traffic ranks (which is over 10 times what ANY other brazilian city varied in the ranks those years so there’s no blaming it on any external factors) [x] . Yeah, Haddad started to solve traffic, which is arguably the thing everyone hates the most in this city. People spending less time in traffic start spending more time at leisure - no matter, he closed important avenues on Sundays so that people could use that space, public space, for fun, and anybody who’s been at Paulista on a Sunday nowadays will have seen how damn awesome that place became. He also regulated and stimulated Carnaval as a street party that is now country-famous (do y’all remember how nearly nobody ever considered spending Carnaval in São Paulo a cool thing before 2012? yeah. and people come to the city now just for that and spend a whole lot of money here cause of it [x]). Then he created our very first fucking city tour program with buses and all (man, biggest city in the country and we didn’t have a city tour bus for tourists, what the fuck). He did the first actual Floods Tackling project that involved actually mapping the floods and acting directly on them with more cleaning of the streets and even smart-monitored sewers and trash cans at some places [x]. He created LGBT support centers and was responsible for putting the São Paulo Pride Parade (one of the biggest in the world) on the official government calendars (and as minister for education he was responsible for trying to implement an anti-homophobia program involving educating and orienting teachers to deal with these situations) [x] . He tackled the drug problem (especially the crack-cocaine problem) downtown by offering support (food, housing, medical and psychological assistance, and actual jobs) to addicts - a lot of people were against “giving money to drug addicts”, but again, it worked, and I have a whole post about this here. He created a program to stimulate recycling food at the big open markets and to ensure that organic food was served in the local schools every week. He helped open several tech centers that allowed for people to take tech and coding courses and use 3D printers and other stuff for free or at low prices [x]. Still want more culture? He created public cinemas at poor areas (that showed all kinds of movies, local ones, international ones, all in theaters as good as the paid kind) and created a whole institution to stimulate film making in São Paulo, SPCINE [x] [x]. Oh, and he started a project to take the names of our previous dictators and torturers off the street names (cause yeah we had that) and replace them with, well, decent people [x].
Not enough to have some cool ass projects? K, we can discuss his economy as mayor. Cause not only Haddad was innovative as fuck as said above, he also made the city’s finances as good as ever - and I mean it, cause he renegotiated our historical debts to the federal government and reviewed several contracts to companies AND created an agency to investigate corruption scandals regaining several millions into our vaults [x] [x], in a way that by the end of his government we had over 40 billion less in debt [x], 2-3 billion in store and had our investment rate (you know the thing that Brazil kept being lowered at? by international agencies? those grades and stuff?] raised. Oh yeah, and he got like 95% of what he promised in his campaign done [x].
And I said all of this so I can exemplify why I like Haddad - it’s not about one or two individual projects, it’s about the way he thinks as a whole. He thinks ahead and he thinks based on actual science - without forgetting a human side of it all. All of his unpopular and polemic measures had positive results - they went miles away from common sense, but it didn’t matter for him cause scientific studies had showed it would work (and it did! what a fucking surprise!). Of couse, that made him the most hated mayor by some people cause all he does is just so weird, right? and he never cared, multiple times he mentioned he didn’t mind being unpopular if it was the right thing for the city. And he was in fact unpopular cause of that (and cause of his party, obviously). He left office leaving contracts signed for about 7 years ahead. He didn’t even have high hopes of being reelected by then, but he left stuff ready to work for the next government (likely an opposition one) anyway. Cause that’s what you do if you’re a decent politician, but it’s so damn rare to see this kind of attitude here. Haddad looked at cold hard facts, saw a city that could use a lot of change in several areas, made a plan and went ahead with it knowing that a lot of people would hate him for it but that in the end it could actively change how we live - and he was right. By the end of it, people did have a different relationship with the city.
Haddad showed me in both his public offices that he doesn’t have the small mind of most our politicians that seem to only be able to think about things that can happen every 4 years, nor only about things that will be popular for the sake of being popular without being right. And that’s just what I want from a politician. Seems so simple, and yet it’s nearly impossible to find. So that’s why he’s a politician i’m not afraid to support.
To close this off i’m gonna leave y’all with links to articles from the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times (portuguese here) and The Wire complimenting his time as mayor too so english readers can get some more opinions AND here an Haddad article (in portuguese) that I like if you want to see more of him (especially his views of Brazilian politics), cause this doesn’t even cover all his interesting projects.  Here’s also an interview with him in english, and here here and here some in portuguese for people who want to get a better sense of him and his government plan. Feel free to ask more questions about his projects, I’ll try to get to them when I have time.
unreal relationship au #1
Stan was in a panic.
This did not happen to him for a long time, because his whole life in the last few years was simply an example of a quiet family life. Family life with parents, of course. In the end, he was only sixteen and, as the guy rightly thought, this age was not too suitable for a romantic relationship. All his thoughts were busy studying and choosing the university, this is what his whole life will depend on in the future. He lived on a «school-part-time-house» schedule, and on weekends, if he was lucky, «house-friends-house» and this seemed more than correct.
Returning from a part-time job, Stan often listened to reproaches and questions to his side, concerning, in the main, all the same future. Only now the tired brain, along with a no less tired body, refused to memorize and reproduce any of this afterwards. Choosing a profession, looking for a college and, finally, a girl…
He had no reason to sound the alarm until the moment when the father announced at one of the family dinners:
— Stanley, — he began, quite softly and calmly, folding his instruments into a plate. — I found you a bride.
Stan's world at that moment, if not collapsed, then staggered for sure. He looked incredulously at first into the eyes of his unshakable father, and then at his effaced mother. All plans for the future, that he had been building for all these long years, did not make sense for the post if he was forced to marry. He bit his lip thoughtfully, immediately starting to analyze the situation in search of all sorts of possible developments.
— I know her? — He asked hopefully, because, after all, they could conclude a contract or just be friends, being husband and wife. How naive of him, but hope dies last. — Are you going to marry us now?
— I don’t see any reason to pull this off, — Ravvin gave his son a dismissive look. — This is Aviva, did you see her when she visited us last summer. Marriage to her will also help our business, you know, her father has a certain power over some of the departments…
Stan closed his eyes, miraculously restraining himself from not shouting or cursing loudly. Aviva… She looked at him with real hearts in her eyes, as if no one else existed in the world. All the time she ran around the tail of the poor guy, not understanding the hints and not wanting to accept direct refusals, and when summer came to an end and she was sent back to her parents, Stan woke up the next morning to an incoming message on social networks. Then, for the first time in his life, he probably saw a woman’s breast and first of all sent Aviv to the black list. With such a person it is unlikely to find a common language, even if you try to shove all your dislike far away, because the girl’s character was not only not very good, so she didn’t understand the simplest exact sciences. Damn it.
— I… I don’t think this is a good idea, father, — he made a feeble attempt to object, but was immediately interrupted:
— This is not discussed, Stan. Next Friday they will come here to discuss the details of the wedding.
Just a week in order to find a way out of this situation. Stan nearly howled in desperation!
— Son, — Patricia said, looking at the boy with undisguised tenderness, all this time carefully hidden from her husband. — We gave you a chance, asked you about whether you have a girlfriend.
— You shouldn't blame us, — Ravvin nodded in agreement.
— I, — Stan sighed, honestly not knowing what to say to that. Marry at such an early age, and then have children under the same yoke of the parents — not what he wanted. It was necessary to think quickly, absolutely any option would be suitable for a short time, but to delay the wedding and find another more suitable way out. It was already dusk outside the window, somewhere beyond a distant forest, a bright red strip of sunset appeared, turning into a delicate pink, and then an endless blue sky, darkening on the eve of the night. Suddenly, the boy opened his brown eyes and looked at his parents again, but with much more confidence. — You asked me about girlfriend, and therefore I did not tell you about boyfriend.
He almost grinned, thereby ruining the whole plan when he saw the faces of the adults stretch out; they, apparently, did not even anticipate such a development of events. Mom sat down even more directly and looked away, but she didn’t look particularly surprised. Stan had to forget about her when he caught a suspicious look from his father. Obviously, he did not believe his word.
— Stan, I know that Aviva is somewhat obsessive in his desires and I still remember how you ran from her, but, nevertheless, son, this is no reason to say so, — he smiled good-naturedly, but was in that smile Something sarcastic and vile, from which the younger Uris was embarrassed, which he, unfortunately, could not pacify in time.
— I will bring him, — he said firmly, nodding to his own words and decisively shoving a spoonful of rice into his mouth. — And then you cancel the wedding.
Ravvin looked thoughtfully at his son, hemmed, but he never answered anything. However, Stan doesn’t need any more — his father always expressed his reluctant agreement in this way, and Patricia only exhaled quietly, just starting to eat. What was on their minds for each of them, Stan did not know, but he suspected that they absolutely did not believe him. Well, he himself signed the death sentence. Because he had no boyfriend, because up to this point he was not even sure about his orientation. But it's better to accept yourself and live with a man whom you at least just want sexually than with Aviva.
Yes, and the guys who liked Stan, always turned out to be either hooligans, or just aggressive bully. Given that he himself fell in love only once… and still in love. I didn’t want to think about something sad. I took a glass of water with trembling hands and drained it almost completely. Damn.
Biography:
Born on the Southside of Chicago, with two older siblings and three more to come after him, Elliot Fordman not living but surviving. His father was not in the picture. None of his siblings fathers ever were. Looking back now, he doubts that whoever his bio dad is, they have no idea they have a son. His mother, Laura, did what she could but that wasn’t saying much. She was very unwell mentally and unable to sustain a job because of it. Without a job and health care her medication slipped to the way side and instead she self-medicated with whatever drug happened to be the cheapest that day. She kept a roof over there heads by selling herself but for the most part, Elliot was taken care of by his siblings. Well, until he was about six and he started taking care of the younger ones as well.
From an early age, Elliot was drawn to computers. He only ever got to use them when his sister would take him to the library and at school. They had no money for him to actually buy a computer but he was enthralled with them. How they worked made his brain hurt in just the best way. It wasn’t long before he was reading books in his share time about how to write code, hacking 101, and even advanced computer tech. He wasn’t very social, even as a child, and found comfort in the linear nature of computer programming. It either worked or it didn’t and when it didn’t, Elliot could often find the reason why. People weren’t like that.
Not very social turned into social anxiety as Elliot got into being a teenager. Could you blame him? His house never felt safe. His mother was often passed out on the living room floor or too off her ass to tell who he was. Elliot’s older sister, Fallen, was losing her mind trying to keep him and his younger siblings from getting taken away by CFS and older brother, Connor, was getting into debt with some drug dealers. Debt that caught up with him in the fall that Elliot turned fourteen. Connor, Fallen, Elliot and there youngest sister, Lily, were home. Mother was in the kitchen too but she wasn’t exactly there. Connor’s dealer came in through the back door. The windows had all been opened because it was so hot out still and they simply reached through the window closest to the door and walked in. Elliot can’t remember details.They were watching TV and then there was a lot of shouting.
Things got out of hand quickly. He can remember the first gun shot going off clear as day. The second and third he barely heard because his ears were ringing so badly. Connor got hit in the side of the head. His mother took a stray bullet to the temple. Fallen then shoved him and Lily to the ground. Damage was done, however, and before the ambulance’s and police arrived, Connor and mom where dead. Fallen had a bullet removed from her arm, Elliot still has a scar from where he took one to the thigh. Lily was thankfully unhurt. At least, physically. The night that they left in the ambulance together, was the last night that Elliot ever saw the inside of that house. He cannot, to this day, think of it without blood all over the walls.
After that he was bounced from foster home to foster home. Some parents tried to get him help for the depression that was clearly setting in, the anxiety that constantly overwhelmed him at school and the PTSD from what happened to his family. Some families even tried to keep he and at least one of his siblings together. It never lasted long. They where all a little too much for one reason or another. Having too Fordmen’s in one house just proved to ruin whatever household they landed in.
After high school, Elliot actually moved into a small apartment with Fallen. He was twenty but the time he got out of high school. He never flunked out completely. The year of Connor and his Mothers death he took a year off. And then with all the break downs and therapy appointments- It just took him a little extra time to finish. In fact he finished with honours in most subjects. For a few years, Elliot worked until he ran into an old teacher for his who encouraged him to seek higher education. He gave Elliot a list of places to apply for that gave out grants and scholarships to those who couldn’t pay for their schooling. Thus, Elliot put his name in at The Institute. He never thought that he’d get in and when he did he was unbelievably happy. He was the first of his family to get into post-secondary school.
Of course when he arrived he wasn’t expecting what he got. Everything was terrifying but he had very little choice in the matter. Honestly, there was a point in which Elliot was ready to quite, give up, go home and never look back. That was when he meet Henry. They weren’t involve or anything. No, but they became good friends and for the first year Henry claimed Elliot and taught him a whole bunch of things that Elliot never knew he could enjoy. Sex therapy became something that kept Elliot level headed. That and a strict routine that he followed day in and day out. Submission quickly became the best medication for him. He could stop thinking, stop worrying, and just let someone he trusted take control. He learned ways to ground himself and let someone else ground him. It was perfect and it didn’t last. Henry finished his degree and left the school.
Now, Elliot is without his teacher and Dominate. He is back in a world that he doesn’t understand or know very well. He doesn’t have his strict routine. These past few weeks have been very, very hard on him. Without being claimed he feels unbelievably lonely again, and a sense of being utterly lost is dragging him into a place that he was hoping he might not go to again.
Advanced Cicerone Chris Leguizamon Is Using Beer Education to Make the World a Better Place
Tumblr media
It was the two-hour bus ride to and from his previous job at Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, Calif., that gave Chris Leguizamon time to become one of only two Advanced Cicerones in San Diego. Armed with a collection of beer magazines and books like Randy Mosher’s “Tasting Beer: An Insider’s Guide to the World’s Greatest Drink,” Leguizamon honed his expertise as a craft beer expert, eventually becoming the education program manager at Pure Project, a 1% for the Planet Company and certified carbon and plastic-neutral organization known for ultra-complex and highly sought-after brews. He shares his knowledge with beer drinkers of all levels through an Instagram livestream series under his account @chris.thebeereducator, with a goal of helping San Diego become home to the most Cicerone-certified front-of-house staff anywhere else in the world.
Sharing knowledge comes naturally to Leguizamon. As a former brewery tour guide for six years, as well as a first generation Latino/Hispanic American with a degree in physics and passion for renewable energy, he’s as well versed in discussions about the diversity in beer styles as he is about diversity and social justice. After the #BlackoutTuesday initiative permeated Instagram last June, Leguizamon says he found himself avoiding discussions about beer in order to focus on conversations around equity (and the lack thereof) outside the beer industry.
“I could not fathom educating people about anything that pertains to this fizzy carbonated beverage without addressing real social issues, because that’s what the world is going through,” Leguizamon says. When responding to critics who say breweries should “stick to beer,” he says, “If you just think that life is about beer, you’re missing the point … Beer is made by someone with hands, that’s working, that also has three kids — there’s more to it [than beer].”
With Pure Project’s backing, Leguizamon shifted his educational efforts online. (He calls his employer “the best leadership company I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”) In the following interview, Leguizamon discusses his entry into beer, his upward trajectory, and his desire to empower others to make their own impacts.
Ed. note: This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
1. How, when, and why did you get into beer?
When I was 15, I was visiting my uncle in Bogota, Colombia. I’d never really had beer besides like, family gatherings when you’re like two years old (laughs). He brought in a mixed 6-pack, sits it right down in the living room, and says, ‘Chris, today we’re gonna drink the products of our country.’ He presented one — Club Colombia, which has won a bunch of awards — and told me to look at the color (yellow, fizzy, straw-like), smell it, and then I tasted it. It was nothing like soda, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, God, this sucks!’
The second beer was Poker, and it had this attractive amber hue to it. The two didn’t look the same at all, so I tried it and it had this recognizable toast that reminded me of breakfast with my mom, and a touch of caramel. Colombians are attracted to caramel because of our obsession with arequipe. We put that on everything, so right away I thought it was way better than the other one.
At that point, I went down a rabbit hole of: Why does beer taste different? There are cultures behind this. There are centuries of science and art. I began wanting to read, wanting to learn, and indirectly change the stigma of what a Latino or a guy that looks like me is in beer. I’m a brown-skinned kid from one of the poorest cities in the nation (Reading, Pa.) and I want people to have a ‘Oh, holy smokes, this kid knows his stuff!’ type of mentality.
2. So when did you formally enter the beer industry?
In 2014, I worked at a brewpub in Pennsylvania called Chatty Monks, and at that point I was the only non-family member that was on staff; it was just a staff of six, including the three owners. I was this bushy, big-eyed 21-year-old, excited to finally be in craft beer and I would sing praises about flavors, pairings, and there came a point where like the guests were looking at me and they’re like, ‘Dude, it’s just beer. Why do you have so much passion behind this?’ It got to a point where I became an outlier in my own industry-slash-town. So I thought, ‘I’m gonna move to the place I like to vacation, which is San Diego,’ and I did in 2014. I remember thinking, ‘Holy shit, these people get it.’ I worked at Mission Brewery as a tour guide until 2015, moved to Stone Brewing until 2016, and then AleSmith Brewing Company until early 2019.
3. You’ve worked at a few big name breweries in San Diego. But you’ve talked about getting burnt out on the industry after a couple of negative encounters. What kept you in beer?
In 2019, I wanted to leave the beer industry, defeated. I was like, ‘Maybe I could get into bourbon, maybe get into coffee’ … but Kira Bouchard [currently the regional manager at Pure Project], who is my saving grace, was having coffee with me and asked what ‘beer adventures’ I was having. When I told her I was considering leaving the industry altogether, she encouraged me to apply to Pure Project, despite there being no open positions at the time.
Things fell into place: Someone left, I applied. I went through the whole interview process and the rest is history. I went from not wanting to smell a beer or talk about it to signing up for the Advanced Cicerone exam three months later.
4. What was the [Advanced Cicerone] exam study process like?
I studied for five hours a day. I would wake up at 5:30 a.m., put a Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich in the microwave, and then coffee. I’d just sit there every single morning and by 6 a.m. the books were open. I sacrificed a lot. I’ve missed out on a lot, but that determination kind of got me back into the rhythm.
5. Why is beer education so important to you?
I’m very team-oriented, and I hate when people talk down to beertenders or try to stump them, mainly because of gender. That ticks me off. A lot of people try to stump [female bartenders] and I can’t stand that, so I want to empower everyone to be able to hold their own.
6. After you achieved Advanced Cicerone, how did you start to share your knowledge?
We at Pure Project all push each other to be better, and the way that it evolved was I was homebrewing this BrewDog beer through their DIY Dog program [an annual compilation of open-source homebrew recipes], and I asked Mike Czech [Pure Project director of distribution], ‘What if we do something like this at Pure Project? We’re releasing two new beers every two weeks. What if you announce the title, the ABV, and three important keywords the beertenders can use?’ But Mike tailored it so well; he cut out the fluff. I’m very raw with my ideas and I need someone to edit, and Mike made it happen.
At the same time, Matt [Robar, Pure’s co-founder] saw potential in me because I was a tour guide for so long. He asked me to jump on an IG Live, since we were about to release Hazelsaurus Rex and a barrel-aged sour. It was one of the rawest IG Lives ever, I’d never had the two beers and Winslow [Sawyer, Pure’s head brewer], who is like a foot taller than me, pours the beers and my face lights up. I’m just geeking out. When we cut, they thought I did a pretty good job, so they asked me to do it again the next week. And it went from there!
7. How did that segment on Pure Project’s Instagram transform into what you’re personally doing, and how did it change during Covid-19?
I started a beer account called Chris the Beer Educator, and the first video you find is literally me in the back of my girlfriend’s backyard, laying out the intention of this whole virtual education thing. It was literally just to highlight everyone who got me to the point where I’m at now — never to focus on me; it’s to highlight other people and what they’re doing.
Then Covid hits and I’m sitting there antsy, wanting to keep teaching people about beer. So this spawned off that IG Live that Pure Project had me do for a couple months. I thought if I can convince people to read one of the most fundamental books, which is ‘Tasting Beer,’ then hopefully people will follow along. It made me want to read that book again, and it kind of grew into its own beast.
Weirdly, people have told me I built a brand. I didn’t mean to — I literally just wanted to empower people that were just at home during quarantine, not knowing what the world is gonna look like, to read ‘Tasting Beer’ and show how amazing San Diego beer professionals are. It’s San Diego craft beer in its rawest form.
8. What’s one episode that stands out to you?
When George [Thornton, owner of Home Brewing Company] and I were talking, things were flowing, and we were talking about Black is Beautiful — that was just the most human side of me, and George. There was a lot of frustration with what’s happening in the world, a lot of ‘How can people not just want to listen?’ George and I had that one moment where we both had pain, we both had frustration, and this was the least we could do being beer professionals, just being human, is telling people, ‘Listen, we know that you feel attacked, but just stop yelling back — just listen, learn, read a book about what’s happening. Try to understand people’s perspective that you don’t understand. They’re not part of the same walk as you. Celebrate that diversity as we like to celebrate diversity in beer styles.’
9. Ultimately, what’s your goal in the beer industry?
The main goal of Chris the Beer Educator is to have everyone pass their Certified Cicerone and to get that Level 2. I’ve always, always, always wanted to have people go from Level 1 to Level 2 and say, Chris was that person when everyone else says ‘Just do it yourself,’ he didn’t mind that I messaged him and said, ‘Hey could you clear up this section for me?’
I asked a lot of people for help during the Advanced Cicerone studying, and I got a good amount of ‘nos.’ Then there’s those people that mentored me, and I want to be that person for San Diego, so that we have the most Certified Cicerones, the most [Advanced] Cicerones, and ideally the most Master Cicerones in the nation. Imagine San Diego not just having the most amount of breweries — that’s nice — but the most educated staff anywhere, where everyone’s really on top of their game. Making it both female and male, Latino, person of color, Black, Asian, whatever it may be to diversify. That’s the dream, honestly.
are you there god? it’s me, nico, and i have some beef with u !! anyway, poor attempt at a quirky intro aside, i’m 18,  est & they/them. currently, i am in my senior year of high school and i’ve finished all my college applications (god bless) and got some acceptances so far, so senioritis is hitting me hella hard. anyway !! that means that i will probably be on here all the time lmao. uhhhhhhhhhh i’m almost always on disc*rd ( add me ! keithkogane#3129 ) it’s definitely much more easier for me to plot there than it is here. speaking of, if you would like to plot, please don’t hesitate to message me or like this post !! ok cool now enough about myself, here’s my little piece of shit.
( asa butterfield, they/them, eighteen ) — have you seen agnes byrnes , the biomedical engineering student around oxford yet? i hear they can be perverse and reticent, but those who know them insist that they are pragmatic and perceptive. rumour has it that following their grandfather’s death, they developed a percocet addiction. is it true? only time will tell.
biography ( aka literally just bullet points outlining their life)    !
agnes adrian byrnes was born to a young mother who longed for a baby girl to push her dreams and desires on and an older father who ached for a manly son to teach him sports and how to follow in his footsteps. what they got was neither of these perfect imagined children.
their mother, margo, comes from a family that owns a still growing empire of chain convenience stores. their father, patrick, comes from a poor family that didn’t know if they’d have electricity the next day. the two fell in love quickly, and soon after agnes was born, they fell out of love. however, being the selfish man he was, patrick couldn’t bring himself to divorce himself of his wife’s riches.
**TERMINAL ILLNESS, DEATH TW** margo was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer on agnes’s fifth birthday, and ended up dying the next year on christmas day. for the short time that they had known their mom, agnes was very attached to her. **TW OVER**
the next person that agnes grew very attached to was their grandfather from their mother’s side. after her passing, they could only be satiated by the vivid fantasy tales that their grandfather weaved before their very eyes.
**ABUSE TW** their father, on the other hand, grew increasingly more strict on agnes. they missed school for stretches of time every month, recovering from bruises and broken bones. during their tenth year of school, patrick came home so past drunk, that there wasn’t an ounce of sober in him. that night was also the night that he smashed agnes’s head into a metal railing, causing them permanent loss of hearing in their left ear. **TW OVER**
**DEATH TW** again, the only structured thing that held agnes together was their grandfather, so when they found him in their last year of school, lying on the driveway with his head smashed in next to a crowbar and blood pooling around their feet, they didn’t know what to do with themself. **TW OVER**
**DRUG ADDICTION TW** they called it acute stress disorder. it wasn’t something they completely understood. agnes showed up to therapy session after therapy session, going no where. eventually, they began to fake that they were better, saying that they were responding positively to the SSRIs they were prescribed. in reality, they weren’t taking the SSRIs. instead, they found comfort in popping percocet a few times a week. for now, it hasn’t gone past a maximum of four a week, but they have considered increasing intake. **TW OVER**
headcanons !
they rarely talk to people they have just met and a very closed off. however, it is easy for them to snap at anyone.
uhhhhhhh never been in a relationship before they just dont got the time double majoring and shit. but their orientation is towards guys/masc presenting folks.
deaf in their left ear if ya didnt get that from the bio/didnt read it ( i wouldnt blame you aklsjfhkjdfg ) & no one really knows about that or any of their past tbh
really into everything science/mathematics/basically anything academic
when they’re close to someone they often dont stop talking about their interests once prompted
really practical. doesnt buy shit they dont need. everything has a purpose. had the same wardrobe since they’ve been 16 tbh.
really unconscious about their height as they’ve always been made to seem smaller than their dad. they stand at 6′0ft, but always slouch to divert attention away from themself.
stubborn as hell and doesnt take pity from anyone at all
scars all over. has a few cigarette burns on their arms. still usually wears long sleeves
bad at socializing
still works as a waiter to get some extra money to put in savings and shit
highkey loves nature and takes every chance they can to study outside
on the otherhand, libraries are their sanctuary and spends a lot of time there.
reads everything from comics to medical journals.
probably only has a few friends
too scared to have a close connection with anyone. scared of touch but yearns it.
wasn’t originally meant to join domus but they were accidentally chosen. they just went with it because they really didn’t have anything better to do.
bikes because they dont have a car
doesn’t drink/do drugs/smoke
connection ideas !
enemies !! who needs friends when you just hate everyone lmao. uhhhhh academic rivals, i hate you just to hate you rivals, i’ve got a real reason to hate you rivals.
(unrequited) crush !! either ur muse got a crush on harley or vice versa idc
friends !! probably doesn’t have many but the ones they do have, they are very close to
ex friend !!
bad influence !!
study buddies !!
that 1 person who might know whats going on with them
idk im open to anything and everything !! it’s 9:10 and im half way through justice league i love ezra miller so much holy fuck
