I think Kiryu can probably handle spice decently, if only because he eats out so much when he's not at the orphanage. Ichiban's spice tolerance was definitely gone after 18 years of prison food, but he could have built it up since then. I think between prison and the mountain village Saejima has gotten so used to miniman seasonings that he can't handle spice at all. Adachi thinks eating super spicy food is a good way to impress a date so he's built up a lot of tolerance but nowadays it tends to give him heartburn.
remembering that adachi wanted ichi to eat spicy food to impress saeko alone makes this assessment 100% real and accurate im so grateful to have scholars in my inbox to indulge my impulse posting

infinite wealth if sawashiro said "who gives a shit about ebina im going to hawaii with ichi" and then the rest of the game is a family vacation
Tumblr media
#Ok so here's my dream scenario. It starts w kicking kiryu out of the narrative bc girl. I love the guy but he does not need to be here!!#kicking him out of the narrative also banishes the ebina stuff. I'm still keeping him around but#he'll be basically built up to be the main antagonist of 9. We're ONLY focusing on the cult stuff for 8#the way 8 closes him off is already sequel bait so give him a proper focus game w 9#Anyways now that that's out of the way. My worstie sawashiro does indeed become a party member.#His moveset is mostly blade damage w some blunt damage mixed in. YES I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT GAME MECHANICS#His singular elemental move is him flicking a cigarette at the enemy. Yes this is based off of that one scene w ichi in 7#ANYWAYS I HAVE MANY IDEAS I CANT TYPE THEM ALL OUT RN BUT. FAMILY VACATION ARC. PLEASE#ITS INSANE TO ME HOW KASUGA 'I LOVE MY FAMILY' ICHIBAN WAS NOT ALLOWED TO PROPERLY INTERACT W HIS FAMILY???#AND THE MAJORITY OF SAWASHIROS CONFLICT INCLUDED CAST MEMBERS WHO DIDNT GIVE A SINGLE SHIT ABOUT HIM????#I keep thinking back on that scene where ebina shows him passed out on that chair and THE INTENDED AUDIENCE FOR#THAT SCENE WAS AN OCEAN AWAY LIKE GIRL. WHAT WAS THE POINT???#well another perspective of that scene would be that sawashiro would be glad that ichi wasn't the one that came to rescue. which is. Misery#me when characters are defined by their guilt 💥💥💥💥😵💥💥💥😵‍💫💥💥💥😱💥💥💥💥😫💥💥💥#Well. If y'all read all these tags. thanks. If anyone is curious about this self indulgent au that I've created feel free to hit me up#(Please hit me up I'm desperate to talk abt the arakawa family misery and I deeply wish this game was even more miserable)#rgg#nile talks

I love that Ichiban is like. A foil for Nishiki, but not in the way Saejima was in 4 (or I guess Nishiki was a foil for Saejima considering a lot of his backstory was added in Kiwami, not the original PS2 game).
Ichi is totally the 'other one' when you compare his treatment to Masato's. Masato gets the wealth, the power. He has a dad that will send others to prison for him so he doesn't get a record.
And then Ichiban's just kinda there. He goes to prison because Arakawa asks him to and he's lied to about who he's even covering for. Then he gets out and is treated like crap!
I noticed a lot of parallels to Yakuza 1 in LAD's story, but this decision was the most interesting to me because they chose to mirror Nishiki's story when a lot of the narrative beats previously were parallel to Kiryu's.
And it's just... so great that Ichiban and Arakawa are able to reconcile. That Arakawa can say that he's ashamed of the ways he treated Ichiban, even if some of his actions had their justifications and that Ichiban can forgive his dad and look forward to going back to the way things were before he went to prison.
What I've loved about LAD so far is that it's the most earnest, feel-good game I've played in a while, but it can turn around and deliver the most emotionally devastating scenes I've ever seen and leave me a sobbing wreck.
The above scene is a prime example of this.
Ichiban finally gets to reunite with Arakawa and then Arakawa fuckin DIES.
It was so shocking that I just stared at my TV and started crying!!! And then the scene after where Ichiban sees his body? Ughhhh. I felt that shit in my bones.

piggybacking off that one ask about nicknames:
what nicknames do you think the boys like being called, if any?
Such a good idea! Getting a couple posts done since it's the weekend and have the free time, hewwo.
Kazuma Kiryu
Nothing makes him fold like his S/O just saying his name. Doesn't mind more traditional nicknames like "dear" or even "honey".
Majima Goro
Honestly, anything goes? He reacts the same way to really any pet name, which is YIPPEE. Or something similar.
Saejima Taiga
Particularly fond of "Hun", for some reason. "Honey" is okay, but he likes the shortened version. Calling him "daddy" or "big papa" makes him just blush.
Akiyama Shun
Also not particular, although "sweetheart" or "sweetie" gets him all kicking his feet and twiddling his thumbs, if you get what I mean.
Tanimura Masayoshi
Calling him "Tani" is perhaps his most favorite pet name on the planet.
Ryuji Goda
Likes being called "babe". Shortening his name to "ryu" always gets a laugh out of him as the word so happens to mean dragon and he has a dragon tattoo... and you get the idea.
Nishikiyama Akira
"Babe" or "sweetie" is good. You can call him "baby" but only in private.
Daigo Dojima
Prefers just being called by his name most of all, but isn't opposed to being called "dear". More prone to joke nicknames, like "boss" or "chief". It makes him laugh, hearing it from you.
Mine Yoshitaka
Doesn't have a favorite. You ARE allowed to call him "daddy" though.
Tatsuo Shinada
You can call him "baby" because he is in fact kind of one. "Honey" and "cutie" also work.
Ichiban Kasuga
Likes having the -chan honorfic on his name or having his name shortened to a pet name. Calling him "Ichi" works a lot of the time.
Tianyou Zhao
Likes pretty much all nicknames. If you try to use a type of food as a pet name, like bean bun, it'll make him bust out laughing.
Joon-Gi Han
If you really want to stop him in his tracks, outright calling him "love" will do the trick. Doesn't like being called "Joonie" at first but is used to it now. He will ONLY accept it from you though!

How about the Legends and Ichigang fellas taking shower by themselves and with their s/o? Just anything that comes up
Hello! Thank you for your request! 💕 Some mild NSFW hcs, hope that’s okay x
I’ve just done Ichigang guys for now because I am v dumb and wasn’t entirely sure who the Legends consisted of. I’m not sure if you mean Kiryu, Majima, Saejima, etc, but also didn’t wanna make any assumptions incase I got it wrong 😭 I’m so sorry, please free to send another request in if you wanna add more characters for this hc 💕
Ichiban:
When showering on his own, Ichi would be a fan of cold showers. He has one each morning, and he finds the cool water tends to wake him up properly, and makes him more alert. He only really has warm showers if he’s feeling ill, or if it’s especially cold out…or if he’s showering with you.
He would be so shy the first time you shower together, as he wouldn’t really know what to do with himself, or where to look. He wouldn’t want to come across as a creep so would actively try to avoid looking at you at first, until you laugh at him and tell him to chill out. Then he’s gonna relax and realise he’s been overthinking the whole thing.
Sometimes, showering with Ichi would end in sex, and other times it would just be completely innocent, with the two of you washing each others hair. There would be no expectations.
You two would probably be a lil goofy in the shower, styling each others hair to make it stick up at odd angles, or creating bubble beards with the shower wash. Very cute and sweet.
Nanba:
Man is frugal, and very conscious of his water/household bills. Showers are gonna be quick, speedy and efficient. He probably would be eager to shower with you because firstly, saves on water and bills, and secondly, he gets to see you naked. There is no down-side.
Likely uses the most basic of shower products. He doesn’t really have a preference for shampoos, soaps or shower gels/washes, and tends to just get whatever is on sale.
Showering together would never really get sexual. Nanba can’t see very well without his glasses, so likely would be a little clumsy when showering, and is definitely not up for attempting to fuck you in there. However, once you two are out the shower, well, that’s another story.
Honestly, showering together would just be quick and no nonsense. There wouldn’t really be any goofing around. He’s there for a purpose, to get clean. No shenanigans.
Adachi:
Hums and sings in the shower. Also, he just really enjoys showers in general? He is so happy when showering, and will always have a lil content smile on his face. Adachi has super hot showers too, the heat relaxes his poor old muscles.
He likely prefers baths, to be honest. As he can just lay back and close his eyes, and maybe even have a beer whilst he bathes.
He has a yellow rubber ducky just sitting on the side of the bath. He bought it because he thought it looked cute and funny. He won’t admit it to anyone, but sometimes after a hard day, when having a bath to de-stress, he finds himself absentmindedly telling the ducky about his problems. He wouldn’t necessarily talk to it, but he’d kinda lean back and just begin venting, glancing at the duck every now and again and telling it how lucky it is, not having to deal with everyday shit.
When showering together, if it’s in one of those shower cubicles, it would be a bit squishy, as he’s so huge and takes up a lot of space. If it’s a shower-head over a bathtub, it’s less squishy but you two will definitely end up fighting about who gets to stand under the shower head.
Horny man, so he probably adores showering with you, and often it does end up with sex. He’d lift you up and have your back pressed against the wall, with your legs wrapped around his hips as he slowly thrusts in to you at a relaxed pace.
Joon-Gi:
Joon-Gi takes hygiene and beauty regimes very seriously. He likely uses the most luxurious shower washes and shampoos ever, and has a careful shower routine to follow. He showers every morning and night.
Showering with Joon-Gi wouldn’t happen often. Showering is like his chill time. He likes to relax, unwind, and allow his mind to go blank. He takes it as an opportunity to pamper himself too.
However, on the occasions where you do shower together, he would help you wash your hair and body. He would not allow you to wash him or his hair though. He’s very particular and likes to do it himself.
He would have been pretty bashful the first time the two of you showered together, not quite knowing what to do with himself, or where to look.
On rare occasions, showering together can result in shower sex, but most of the time, it’s pretty innocent and he’s more focused on getting clean.
Zhao:
Zhao showers every morning, and is likely still half asleep when showering. There has been the odd occasion where he’s almost dozed off whilst standing under the shower head, the feeling of the hot water cascading down his back almost sending him to sleep.
Definitely smooths his hair back under the water like one of those fancy shampoo adverts.
He does jerk off in the shower when showering alone. The hot water has him relaxed, and also it’s easy to clean up after.
When showering together, it’s always going to end up with sex, with only one exception - when you’re ill. If you’re feeling pretty sick and weak, to the point where you’re struggling to walk or carry out daily tasks, he will shower with you. It would be so soft and wholesome. He’d wash your hair and body for you, and then help you dry afterwards. He’d be pretty good at taking care of you when you’re sick.
Any other time you shower together, you’re gonna end up with your front pressed against the cool shower tiles or glass, as he thrusts in to you from behind.

its sooo sick that nishiki ended up being more like kazama than kiryu ever was.
really, kiryu isnt like kazama at all. he holds the same ideals, but its different. kazama never really practiced what he preached until it was too late (i.e saving haruka, helping yumi further down the line)
kazama is one of the most interesting characters, similar to sawashiro (though sawashiros rottenness is more my taste tbh)(i want to make a post abt my thoughts on ichi and sawashiro soon.. i think theres alot to say abt their very complicated relationship, writing to akane about him while also calling him a dumbass and threatening to kill him is so funny)(“dear akane today i tried to chop off ichis finger and called him a dumbass punk, kids today, huh”). i think hes too greedy, he wants his cake and wants to eat it too. he tells kiryu to leave yumi and nishiki alone. he leaves kiryu in the dark about things, ik thats a gameplay aspect but i still think it speaks to his greed. he doesnt want kiryu to think of him negatively (he cuts kashiwagi off when he brings up his past assassinations). he wants to be a father but doesnt know how to. you say he tries his best to disuade the orphans from swearing up? not true. if he really wanted to stop them from joining he wouldnt have been around at all. he didnt have to visit him, he wanted to, out of guilt, out of regret, doesnt matter his intentions, at the end of the day him being there and playing father led kiryu and nishiki both to join. though, kiryu joined out of admiration, and nishiki? like kazama, joined because of his guilt. they paid for yukos medical bills, what else could he do?
kiryu was all the things kazama wanted to be, but nishiki? he was all the things kazama was. I still dont think they had a father-son relationship, its more.. complicated, messy, the worst type of relationship two unfamiliar yet similar men could have. yet at the same time, nishikis is his fathers son.
their greed, insecurity, shame, kazamas struggle to take control of his life, nishikis final act of doing things his own way… much to think abt.

Hi penny! Saw that you finished playing infinite wealth (hooray!) and i’m interested to know what you think of kiryu from this game? Considering iirc you haven’t played the kiryu saga. And obviously you can’t say too much because of spoilers but i’m curious anyway 🫣
oh he is so,, so fucking GOOD!!!!!!!! i love how diametrically opposed him and ichi are in terms of vibes, like they come from two completely different sides of the same coin which makes it all the more satisfying seeing them work off of each other more closely. it was so incredibly interesting having come in off of Y7 almost exclusively and just feeling the years upon years of history dripping off of kiryu, and i always intended to do so but now i have basically no choice but to spend the time in between this game and the inevitable 9th one catching up with kiryu's side of things. i skimmed through a lot of the more heavily referential side content in order to keep myself SOMEWHAT fresh for that, which ended up working out nicely as i managed to get just enough context to enjoy the story of 8 while still having no real idea of the depths of nuance and individual events that go down prior to 7. either way, it's so funny looking back at my initial reaction to the announcement of infinite wealth at RGG summit and how i was so confused as to why they would do a dual protag thing after already passing the torch, cause i basically feel the exact opposite now LOL. i see why they did things this way for infinite wealth specifically, though i do hope to see a continued focus on building ichi into just as deep and human a character as kiryu over time. i love ichiban to death and i love how much his character basically spits in the face of all cynicism almost to a fault, i wouldn't change that for the world it's such a key part of his character and it's necessary i think in order for him to be a protagonist that is unique enough to stand alone the more he hopefully takes the spotlight, but the idea of seeing him continue to be tested and prodded in the ways that kiryu seems to have been really excites me, so i think having the juxtaposition of the two characters in full display was really valuable in that regard.

"Well, since we're all gonna die to this boss fight, there's one more secret I feel I have to share with you. I did not care for Yakuza 5." "What?" "Did not care for Yakuza 5." "I-" "How could you even say that, Kasuga-san?" "Didn't- didn't like it." "But Ichi, it's so good, it's like the perfect game!" "I- This is what everyone always says, it's like 'Ahh it's so good!" "The Haruka section, the Kiryu section, I mean, you never see- TATSUO SHINADA!" "I know, I know- Fine characters, fine characters. Did not like the game." "Why not?" "Did not- couldn't get into it." "E-explain yourself. What didn't you like about it?" "The plot makes no sense, Sa-chan." "What?" "The plot makes no sense." "What does that even mean?" "BECAUSE IT'S A LITTLE LONG, THE PLOT MAKES NO SENSE?!" "It takes forever getting in, you spend like- you spend like 30 hours, and y'know, I can't even- I can't even get through the game. I've never even played the final boss." "YOU'VE NEVER FOUGHT THE FINAL BOSS?!" "How- how could you even say you don't like it if you haven't even given it a chance?" "I agree with Nanba, it's not really fair." "It's outrageous-" "I-I have tried on 3 separate occasions to get through it, and I always get to the final long fight with Shinada, and-" "Yeah, that's a great fight! I love that fight!" "Yeah, but I have no idea what they're talking about, it's like they're speaking another langua- That's why I lose interest." "You know what, Ichi-" "THEY'RE REINFORCING THE THEMES!" "The story is about reaching their dreams, something you clearly haven't experienced." "I love Yakuza 4. That is my answer to that statement." "Exactly." "Well, there you go." "...I liked that game, too."

NO YOU’RE SO RIGHT ABOUT THE MAJIMA STUFF THOUGH. GOD. God forbid you speak poorly about the fandom silly guy etc etc. I rt’d one post about someone being annoyed abt majima getting an insane amount of merch (especially compared to other characters- even other PLAYABLE characters) and suddenly my TL is filled with ppl taking it as a personal attack….. like?? Settle down???
My one fear is that instead of Mine content we’re just gonna get Majima Saga 2 for yk3 and rgg will call it a day. WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY ABOUT THE GUY !!! GENUINELY!!!
at this rate we’re going to have a complete record of Majima’s life from birth until modern day bc you knowww they’re never gonna let the cash cow die or retire. + god I lowkey need the 3jimas to break up Now so saejima and daigo can stand on their own again (w/out being overshadowed by Majima)…. Saejima especially… I miss the days when he felt like a character………
(I may have a lot to say on the topic) (he’s a fun character but at this rate I’m getting so sick of the fandom around him)
gen is kinda funny how when there's the Monthly Critique Of Majima post on twitter the rggtwt part of the tl is flooded with majima fans being upset. its like clockwork really LOL
as for saejima, i do miss him being solo... like he's funny with majima at times, but as wack as Y4 was i still really liked his coliseum scene, and his prison adventures in Y5 were a real treat too..
#snap chats#like you say one mild comment about majima in passing and then you have mates acting as if you burned their crops#like .. its never this serious .. also i think people have the right to be a littttttle miffed that other charas barely get anything#its starting to change with the plushies and saejima/akiyama figures so thats great but. still a way to go LOL#its just esp Lol inducing because kiryu and ichi are protagonists so it makes sense for them to get stuff#but majima is quite literally a side character that wasnt meant to have this much popularity#the concept of a chara becoming popular by accident isnt bad thats not the thing- its even cool when that happens#its just sometimes you just see people act really entitled to stuff for that character while every other chara is ignored#and then the same people acting surprised when others go 'actually ive had a bit enough of this guy'#honestly if they did another majima segment for a hypothetical yk3 id laugh. like id be a bit annoyed but id mostly laugh#cause truly what else is there. he's like a comic book character we just gotta keep making situations for him til hes 90#idk. just so funny majima's been given a sort of 'weird' protagonist status#and i say weird because he IS a protagonist but just compared to how he actually functions throughout y1-y6. lol. lmao even#like youre right in that majima's a fun character but he really is better in just small doses imo#or. at least i need people to relax on the idea of a 'majima gaiden' or making him any more prominent in the games than he is now#anyway i cant be bitter posting my dad is being funny as hell. he got us bracelets and he was like#'in our family you and i are the only ones who like these. makes us cool' and i was like 'yeah dad we're so cool'#and this old man is just 'we're so cool ☺️' LIKE PL E A S E THE EMOJI TOOK ME OUT. i love my dad. all bitterness is gone from my heart#anyways bye if rgg gives majima a saga in yk3 im gonna livestream playing that and only that#not even yk3 just the majima part 😭😭😭😭

the mystery of the sleeping arrangements in kiryu's hotel room have been making me insane since IW dropped, so
Tumblr media
in eng sub kiryu says they'll play jan ken for the floor, but in jp he specifically says that they'll use it to decide who gets the bed (誰がベッを使うかは後でジャンケンだ)
initially my assumption was that they just inexplicably did not consider the couches sleepworthy enough and were choosing to crash on the floor instead, but this seems to not be the case, just more of the usual bafflingly pointless localization choices.
tomi takes the bed after that lol
Tumblr media
and then chitose joins up with them, and since there are only 2 couches, it either means somebody actually is sleeping on the floor, or they've got to share the bed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we don't see where ichi was sleeping, but it seems like both couches are empty, and tomi is walking over from behind the couch, from the direction of the little alcove where the bed is. assuming chitose did actually stay the night, that'd mean she and ichi took the couches, while tomi and kiryu shared the bed
...but the wonky localization coupled with all of this implies that their sleeping arrangement looks like

I have started Like A Dragon! I've actually already made it to chapter 5.
Why hadn't I made a post already, then?
Well, there's no sugar-coated way to put this so... let's just rip off the bandaid now.
Tumblr media
I haven't really enjoyed myself playing this game this far. Yet. Maybe I will at some point. But for now I honestly just haven't had much to say in terms of what's happened in the plot besides the beginning. I don't hate the game, it's just that it hasn't been able to really hook me in yet.
I'll keep going since I've heard this game is one of the generally more loved ones in the franchise. And I know RGG loves its slow burn.
I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but I wanna be totally honest. I doubt y'all would want me to lie about how I feel about the game.
More about all that right at the end of the post. I will list my positives and negatives when it comes to this game (and talk about the battle system) down there.
Tumblr media
I know this type of thing is common in RPGs, but I like it all the same. Neat little game mechanic. There's quite a few different ones here, but it's cool.
Tumblr media
An interesting background for a main character. Yeah, being an orphan is more than common. But being raised by the employess in a soapland and the townsfolk around him? That's really out there - in a good way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was very sad. Ichi lost 15 years of his life to the joint and got nothing in return. The shock and disappointment on his face when he was released and there was just. No one waiting for him.
And after that, all that awaited him was just... betrayal. That's just brutal. I fully understand why Ichiban went into Total Denial Mode for a while; it must have been a totally incomprehensible and shocking situation.
-He got out of prison after 15 years and where he expected to find his family waiting for him, he found nobody. AND he suddenly had the freedom of choosing what to do, when to do it and where to go after 15 years. That can be scary.
-He witnessed how much the world and general society had changed in his absence and probably felt very confused.
-He saw his home totally wrecked and abandoned.
And now his mentor and beloved patriarch, the one who saved his life. The man he would have happily been ready to die for at any moment. That man had changed completely and acted like he didn't know Ichiban.
Yeah... the denial, frustration and desperation are totally valid.
Tumblr media
Oh dear. Well, Kiryu wasn't there anymore, the Tojo upper brass kept changing and there was constant conflict within the clan itself. It was just a matter of time before Omi would take advantage of the situation.
I hope Majima and Daigo are okay. Or at least alive ;-;
Tumblr media
*Faint sounds of Majima cackling in the distance*
Oops. Majima better hope Ichi doesn't find out who the driver was lmao. I feel bad for Ichiban, but I also love how this single random idea of Majima's still has these consequences that are brought up, even after all this time.
Tumblr media
God bless Nanba. He's a sweetheart. That's all I can say about him. I also kinda like Adachi. I'm not attached to these side characters yet, but they're neat. I think they'll grow on me eventually, it's just that I tend to be slow when it comes to becoming attached to new characters.
Tumblr media
Legends say that if you pull this bat out, Shinada will appear in front of you and ask for some money....
I did play through the whole soapland thing and then some. I don't have much to say 😭. We do have a woman fighting with us, finally after all this time! #Girlboss
Tumblr media
I would honestly happily die for Nancy. No questions asked.
OKAY UHH POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES.
Positives:
-Ichiban
-Interesting premise
-The different jobs satisfy my hyper-optimizing, excel-sheet-making, micromanaging self
-Funny enemy titles like "Piss Wizard"
-Free full heal spots my beloveds❤️
-Voice acting (in the Japanese dub at least) is excellent
-Substories have been fun!
Negatives:
-EXP yield is... not optimal; grinding takes FOREVER unless you go fight higher-level people than yourself, but then the battles can take ages. Job exp grinding especially feels about as pleasant as pulling teeth.
Am I supposed to grind in this game?? I've started to wonder about that since it's such a slow process. I have absolutely no idea. Have I missed a thing that helps exp gain??
-Unless you get lucky with the ability to find treasure, money yield can be tight at times, too. Which is rough, considering the cost of gear with 4 team members (and probably backup members later).
-The premise is cool, but the stuff I've played through in terms of the plot after leaving Kamurocho hasn't been very interesting to me this far (early-to-mid chapter 5) :/
-Substories don't give you EXP 😭
How about the elephant in the room - the battle system?
Well. I'll come out with it straight away; I'm very, VERY picky when it comes to turn-based combat. Shin Megami Tensei and Persona have unfortunately spoiled me too much, so this game had some unfairly MASSIVE boots to fill. And it didn't quite fill them. My bar is way too high and I acknowledge that 100%.
I get that they didn't want to make the system completely "passive" by just having to select moves and it all going smoothly from here. But I dislike the timing-based quick time stuff in the middle of attacks and perfect guard. I can pull off the attack dmg boost thing most of the time, but perfect guard is just... it feels way more difficult to pull off than Tiger Drop in any previous game. It's very frustrating. I frankly feel stupid, having this difficult a time with it.
Grinding is further hindered by spread moves being kind of unreliable - if the enemies are spread out, you're only hitting a single foe. For now. Maybe there will be better moves later on.
Idk if it's just me, but characters' MP pools feel very limited compared to the cost of the moves combined with how little damage you do at times? Maybe it's just the fact that I'm in the earlier parts of the game, but I feel like I have to be replenishing MP constantly.
I like how all the different types of gear can have additional special effects. It's neat.
All in all the battle system feels... very laborius. I can work with it! Absolutely. I'm just not the biggest fan.
God, I wish I could just gush about this game and sing its praises, but that's not happening yet by a long shot. This far? Maybe a 6-6.5/10. I hope my opinion changes for the better as I progress; I really wanna love it as much as other fans seem to.

Sometimes I wonder how intentional the neurodivergent coding of certain Yakuza characters is.
With Kiryu I don't think it was intentional at first. I think he started as a stone-faced guy who was also just a little clueless (Because that's a pretty silly juxtaposition, writing-wise), but I've noticed as the series progresses there's little quirks or jokes that seem to intentionally code him as autistic-- and not in a mean way (which I love).
Like. When you're talking to one of the hostesses in the cabaret minigame in K2, she mentions wanting to be a mangaka, and Kiryu offers to help.
If you select the 'be an expression model' option Kiryu 'auditions' by making little noises for the different emotions he's trying to do and it's really obvious that he's not really changing his face much. Because he's just not an expressive guy. Because he's autistic!!!
There's the pizza substory from 0 which if you know, you know (and if you don't know, here you go).
If you select all the wrong answers in the producer substory (also in 0), the entire scene feels like an autistic person trying to understand obtuse industry lingo and everyone else getting angry at him for not speaking this hidden language (a reality for many autistic people).
And there's countless other examples that I can't name off the top of my head, but trust me, they're there.
And then there's Ichiban who is so ADHD it brings me joy. And I would just chalk his behaviors to just being a juxtaposition to Kiryu (Ichi's big, loud, and intense while Kiryu's quiet, reserved, and keeps to himself), but there are so many little things that are way too specific for me to ignore.
Firstly, when Ichi wants something he wants it NOW. The Peking Duck scene with Arakawa comes to mind, but also, when he's trying to get Masato’s 'girlfriend' to come to their table, and he resorts to like. Shouting at the guy after her client's like. "Nah. I'm talking to her for a bit." He's feelin' his feelings and good god are those feelings intense.
He seems to struggle with working memory issues such as the scene where he's talking about being Masato's caretaker and then Jo calls him like, immediately after, goes 'hey, you were supposed to take the young master out tonight' and Ichi's like 'oh my god? It completely slipped my mind!'
Ichiban's super creative and clever, but that out-of-the-box thinking is occasionally hampered by him missing little details. Like when he just takes a civilian's wallet, instead of the money they owed because 'Jo only said to bring back the wallet'. But then when he tries to use the money Masato gave him, it doesn't occur to him to take off the band indicating that the money came from Masato’s bank.
He's also pretty impulsive!! The scene where he jumps right into the Korean Mafia's line of fire is a big standout. He literally thought of the first thing that came to mind and did it.
There's also him gameifying his entire life. This example could be argued to be more of an autistic trait (especially the turn-based combat aspect), but ADHDers can also have those super intense interests that you never quite let go of. And gamification of certain tasks is often recommended for ADHDers.
and then there's so many small things that I can't quite explain that just stand out as ADHD behavior.
I honestly don't think Ichiban was ever written to be neurotypical. His character just feels so, authentically ADHD in such a kind way that just can't be accidental.
Although there could've been a writer who was just 'basing Ichiban off their own experiences' and 'their own experiences' just happened to be ADHD. I wouldn't know anything about that.
One more character before I go: Majima's actions in 0 (specifically throwing away the bag of murder goodies Lee gave him) makes way more sense if he has ADHD. He's got this bag of shit he does not want and he needs to get rid of it now. He was feelin' his feelings, okay?!
