this got away from me so ramblings under the cut

Tsubaki is the only one who is graced with an ounce of personality but she's written to be this saint-like figure. She is a 'pure and perfect' wife to Saimon, and a love interest to Yohei. Then she dies for her beliefs that are the main force behind TCW's motives. However, most of her existence is in a novel not much have read, so I do not exactly know if people know just how integral she is to the plot.

The only other woman with a voice is Anne's mom, and while she has a more complex presence, she's still presented to be 'bad'. Alongside her, Cozmez's mom is the most prominent figure when it comes to bad moms. She's as textbook as it goes. She's poor, she's (possibly) a sex worker, she was in no way ready to have kids but she had (probably had to have) them anyway, and she lets them know about that. So naturally, I expect nothing less for them to only get the "women bad" treatment, but surprisingly, both Anne and Cozmez show interesting insight into growing up in a house like that.

Now the sub genre of these women is the 'voiceless one'. You know of them in very vague ways, like you only hear about Yeonmom when it's about how Hajun got kicked out, you only know that Kenta's mom is also in jail, but in contrast the only thing you know about Ryoga's mom is that she died of an unspecified illness. We know that Ryoga cared for her immensely; her death is such a big part of who Ryoga is, but we somehow know remotely nothing about her. She exists as this tragic figure in his life while Satsuki gets to be the front man of his trauma (this is where I'll stop the Ryoga rambling bc this is a topic on its own).

But the point is basically this. It's male character-based media, of course they don't care enough to write women outside of two different categories. Paradox Live loves to use "parental trauma" but even then it's more male-centric; like let's be real here, everyone knows that Haruomi's dad committed suicide (not a single mention of his mom anywhere btw), but we never talk about how Hokusai's mom did too, because it's more important that his father is in jail. And not once does Hokusai mention this!! and if you want to learn about it you have to pay money to get the fanbook!!! Let's think about why that is!!!!
