Jeff Pescetto - DuckTales 1987

DuckTales is an American animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, and ran for a total of 100 episodes over four seasons. Based upon Uncle Scrooge and other Duck universe comic books created by Carl Barks, the show follows Scrooge McDuck, his three grandnephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and close friends of the group, on various adventures, most of which either involve seeking out treasure or thwarting the efforts of villains seeking to steal Scrooge's fortune or his Number One Dime. DuckTales aired in more than 100 countries in 25 different languages. It was the first American cartoon broadcast in the former Soviet Union after the Cold War. In Hungary, those born in the early-to-mid 80s are known as "the DuckTales generation".

The DuckTales Theme was written and composed by Mark Mueller, an ASCAP award-winning pop music songwriter, and sung by Jeff Pescetto. For DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, a longer instrumental version of the song was created. For the 2017 revival, Mueller re-arranged the music and lyrics slightly, and the song was re-recorded by Felicia Barton. Disney was looking for a theme song for their new animated series, and wanted a sense of adventure and excitement, a tune that would complement the technicolor energy of the show itself. Most importantly, Disney's music executives explained, they were after a poppy, radio song - not a "cartoon song". Mueller's agent recommended that he shouldn't get his hopes up, but luckily, he had just scored his first hit; Heart's "Nothin’ at All". It was on the strength, and airplay, of that track, that he was able to obtain a meeting with Disney. Mueller was paid "a whopping $1,250" for the song, he says. "And that was only if Disney used the song on the show and it actually aired. Which, fortunately, it did."

Mueller is regularly astonished by the pervasiveness of his own creation. "When people find out what I do for a living, they’ll always ask if they'd know one of my songs," he says. "Sometimes they won't know my pop hits." (For one, Mueller co-wrote Jennifer Paige's 1998 hit "Crush".) "But almost everywhere I've gone, people know DuckTales. The reach of it is so mind-blowing." Jeff Pescetto, the theme's original singer, has said; "I was playing with my band at a club. A group of guys from England walked up and said, 'We heard your voice and knew right away that it was the guy who sings the DuckTales theme song.' They were so excited to meet me. I just couldn't believe they recognized my voice."

While Metroid (1986) and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (1987) are usually cited as the founding texts of the metroidvania genre, not without reason, they were actually part of a much larger wave of 2D side-scrolling platformers featuring nonlinear, inventory-gated open worlds that were all released in the same three or four year span.

Some are fairly well known, like Blaster Master (1988) and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1987). Others are more obscure these days, like Faxanadu (1987) or The Maze of Galious (1987). There doesn't seem to be any one game that started it – it was an idea whose time had come, and suddenly it was everywhere at all at once.

Of course, given that the genre was just beginning to take shape, there are also a lot of weird edge cases that might or might not be first-generation metroidvanias, depending on how you define your terms. Ultimately, checklists of tropes are perhaps a less relevant metric than which games participated in the creative dialogue that produced what would eventually be labelled the metroidvania.

Apart from one or two people from another social network, I didn't hear any bad criticism about me and my drawings, although there were tips to do better than before and I thank them for those tips that helped me to do my drawings better. I try as much as I can, and I have a lot of ideas that I want to realize with new drawings, the only problem is that time passes quickly, so you need to plan your time well.

DuckTales (2017) series reaction

I never thought I’d be so entertained by the adventures of hyperactive ducks, but it turned out to be really enjoyable!

I never really conceptualized Disney’s mainstay characters (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc.) as real characters. They mostly seemed like mascots used in the Disney parks and merchandise, or stock characters that could be slipped into any kind of story. I didn’t see any continuity between different works featuring them, or know of any official canon timeline. The thing that usually draws me into a story is the characters’ development and relationships, so Donald Duck and his family didn’t hold much interest for me.

That was until YouTube made me aware of some of the characters and events in the DuckTales reboot. I learned some spoilers that intrigued me, and then did what I often do with shows that have finished their run: watch clips and sample episodes about the characters I’m interested in. But I realized that there had been a lot of buildup to what I watched, and I’d have to go back to the beginning to fully understand the story. So a few weeks ago, I watched the first episode of the old series to get a little foundation, then dove into the reboot. I watched the series finale tonight.

This show had a lot of things I love to see in stories: interactions between characters of multiple generations; parents and children learning to work together; long-lost or separated family members finding their way back to each other; and charming recurring characters. The structure was excellent, with plotlines and character arcs that carry through each season, and over the course of the whole show.

The voice cast is fantastic, for major and minor characters alike. Nearly every episode prompted me to look up the voice actors and figure out where I’d heard them before. It also reminded me of many other cartoons I’ve enjoyed, including Kim Possible, Steven Universe, Carmen Sandiego, and Voltron: Legendary Defender. A few episodes are clearly inspired by classic movies, such as Jaws and The Martian. And the more I research the show, the clearer it is that the writers love the source material and pay homage to it while building their own story.

I’ve never seen another Disney work where Donald and his family are fleshed out as characters with complex personalities and compelling arcs. The triplets Huey, Dewey, and Louie have different strengths and interests, and a pretty realistic sibling dynamic, instead of being basically the same person in triplicate. My favorite characters were Della Duck, Goldie O’Gilt, and Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera (voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda!). But, I probably relate most to Huey’s eldest-sibling mentality and thirst for knowledge, and Webby’s enthusiasm and tendency toward obsession in hobbies.

The creed that “Family is the greatest adventure of all” was a little heavy-handed, but that does not make it any less true. Even though most of the characters are related, there is also a strong theme of “found family.” And another theme emerged through multiple characters’ arcs: embracing the unknown with courage and solidarity. That is something we all need now.

In short: DuckTales is one of those reboots that honors the past but also grows beyond its predecessor to tell a new and enjoyable story for both old and new fans.

I saw that in the DuckTales Tag, you said your favorite ship is Louena. And as a fan of the ship myself do you have any headcanons for the two?

Oh, this is great.

First, a bit of self-promotion. A while ago, I wrote a fic where the two of them go on a definitely not a date. It's their first romantic moment, in a way.

Okay, let's do this.

Scrooge threw a formal party and allowed the boys to go with a date. Louie invited Lena, and they spent the evening together. At one point, they sneak out to hang around the pier. It was their first official date.

When they made it official, Webby was the most excited. When she hugged Louie, she whispered in his ear "If you make her cry, I'll kill you". When she hugged Lena, she whispered, "If you break his heart, I'll kill you". They both took the threat very seriously.

Lena convinced Louie to dye his hair pink. She dyed hers green.

Lena wears one of Louie's hoodies as pajamas.

Lena became more frequent on adventures, while Louie spends more time with Team Magic.

Officer Cabrera has them on her radar, as Louie's schemes increased with Lena's magic.

After a fight, they broke up. They got back together a week later.

Huey always tries to plan dates for them.

Dewey became depressed when he realized Louie went on a date before him.

Lena almost sent Doofus to the shadow realm after he kidnapped Louie.

Some of those are going to be used on future fics.

'Sup party people!

It's been a while since I started a tag, but I want to try again. I'll tag @not-some-background-noise @miniaturecollectionwitchofsun @godfrey-the-chaos-duck @lettheladylead, but it's free for anyone...

1) Favorite character

Webby. I love how they managed to make her a lover of adventures and mysteries without sacrificing her femininity... she is also an eternal optimist and the heart of the family, and I love how she manages to help everyone around her in unique ways

2)Favorite triplet

Huey. I love his characterization and his arc (although every triplet is well written and I love them all)

3)Favorite villain

Magica De Spell: she isn't just voiced by the most important woman in the whole wide universe (I'm a whovian who started the series because of DT, imagine how happy I was when I discovered there was also Catherine Tate), but she is also a great villainess who is genuinely good at being bad in a way that everyone is always worried she is behind everything... I also have a soft spot for Mark Beaks because he is realistic in both a funny and a scary way

4)Favorite non canon ship

Weblena: I love the way Lena got saved from Webby and at the same time she had to do some work to save herself, while Webby was always there to support her... they have a beautiful dynamic together and even if they're not officially canon, they still are (Sam King said that)

5)Favorite canon ship

Fendra... I liked them in 'The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee' and I couldn't wait to see how their relationship could evolve only to find in 'Beaks in the Shell!' the cutest and most supportive lovestory ever! We need more male sunshine/female grumpy relationship in media and they were absolutely adorable (they deserved WAY more time together, but their canon interactions kinda make up for this due to their cuteness)

6)Favorite episode

'Nightmare on Killmotor Hill', I think. It's so visually creative with all the kids' dreams and it hits you right in the feels with Lena's arc... the finale is so powerful.

7)A character you came to like the more you knew them

Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera. I didn't know Lin Manuel Miranda back when season 1 aired, but by learning more about him I came to appreciate his character more, and by the end of the series he is probably one of my favorites

8)A theory that hadn't been canonized but you believe it as canon

Scrooge was actively searching for Donald although everybody believed he was on the cruise but he didn't want to warn both the kids and his twin sister (I wrote a whole meta about it back in the day if you're curious)

9)The one question you never stop to ask about

How Selene, THE GODDESS OF THE MOON, didn't know Della, (her possible former girlfriend?), was stuck on the Moon? She has powers over it, so why did she ignore it? Was her father fault? ANGONES, DT WRITERS, EXPLAIN TO ME PLEASE, IT'S BEEN 5 YEARS I KEEP TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT!

10)What would you have liked to see in the (cancelled) fourth season?

MAGICSTONE CANON, an eventual Magica's redemption without Lena forgiveness, THE TRIPLETS DAD (I know they didn't want to explore the character in order to highlight how Donald was basically their true dad, BUT... it would have been an interesting plot), Goldie's backstory, Hortense and Quackmore, more moments between Donald and Scrooge, Daisy bonding with the family, June and May finding their own place in it, more Fendra, more domestic Scroldie, BRIGITTA (I know the writers would have handled her well just as they did with Daisy), Scrooge and Webby adjusting their dynamic as father and daughter, more lore about Fenton's dad, the kids interacting all together...
