BAM! A certain virus runs wild and forces everyone to stay at home. Phil continues to upload solo videos which distracted so many of us during these dark times. Dan, however is AWOL and the only pic we have of him is a shitty screenshot of him in glasses and a mask helping Phil rescue an injured pigeon (lockdown was WILD).

Set up of the scene aside (i still hate those Specters), this is just lovely, and the fact Tifa is the one who chases them away makes me emo.

Like... man everytime Aerith is lost in some way, every single time, Tifa is there to reach out for her and hold her hand and guide her outside of it.

She is always promising Aerith that she will find a way for her to get out of it, and it's just. so lovely. They care for each others so much.

also major major MAJOR spoilers under the cut:

(from late OG stuff that weren't adapted in Rebirth yet and from the Movie in particular)

I think it's especially lovely because of how Tifa is set often as the guide in a spiritual sense in the story, and it's why her last name is "Lockhart", "Locked Heart". Where Aerith represents the Earth itself and the nature that keeps on living even after countless abuses, Tifa represents more this determination to carry on while wearing your heart on your sleeve, and more specifically, she's therefore the one who is often used in the OG to navigate the deepest problems in your heart.

more precisely, i'm thinking about when Cloud is completely vegetative again, after Aerith's death and after having had his mind totally broken by Sephiroth, and that because the Earth is destroying itself to invoke the Weapons to protect itself from the Meteor. In that bit, Cloud and Tifa gets to fall into another opening of the Earth and are brought in the lifestream inside of Cloud's repressed past, and it's Tifa who has to therefore walk him through his heart, literally, to help him out of it. All while also the implication is that it's Aerith, from the otherside, now that she is one with the lifestream, who is helping making the situation possible while putting Tifa in this position of a guide.

And I especially find it, so, so lovely, that because Tifa has this role as a guide in the depth of your heart, guided by the lifestream, Tifa is the one who can reach out to Aerith, she is the one who can promise her they'll find a path together, she's the one who is chasing the Specters away.

And it makes me think especially on how Tifa grieves Aerith by repeating multiple times everything she knew Aerith wanted out of life, that "she wanted to live, more than any of us", and the way to set up Tifa here as the person who wants to keep Aerith outside of those darkness? is so lovely to me in particular.

Finally it also makes me think of the movie. I cut it from the screenshot bc it was weird in the narrative, but Aerith mentions "follow the yellow flowers" and then yellow flowers breaks, and it reminded me how in Advent Children, when Tifa has this fight against Loz in Aerith's Church, she is always trying to keep him out of the flowers while the yellow petals keep floating around her, and the director for the movie said that it was an indication that Aerith was trying to protect her from the otherside.

And later in the movie when Aerith fixes everything and everyone rejoice, and Tifa is the only one (aside from Cloud) who feels Aerith's presence and goes "somehow, i knew you were here. Thank you."

Like.... There is this thing in the OG and in the movie that marks how Aerith has been protecting Tifa and how Tifa has been protecting Aerith, that Aerith helps Tifa being a guide through turmoils, and here we see it set up nicely with how it's Tifa who is constantly looking to get Aerith outside of this doomed path, she is the one who is constantly trying to find her, to keep her out of the lifestream influence, from her fate, just like Tifa is the one who especially resents how Aerith got her life robbed from her.

SO I MADE MYSELF PARTICULARLY EMO ABOUT IT.

Fuck the Specters, i fucking hate this added plotline, but using it to clearly showcase Tifa's role as the Guide, and showing how desperately she wants to keep Aerith away from her fate, how she is the one defying the odds for her?

Here’s my Cole au feat. my copy-pasted discord ramblings:

So Cole gets turned into a ghost during season 5, and then one season and a holiday special later he’s back to being a good ol’ human yeah? And he’s happy because he doesn’t have to worry about dying to water or going intangible at the worst times. Life is good — for the most part of course let’s be reasonable they face danger every Tuesday.

And then they get a mission and everything is going about as well as you’d expect and then — Cole gets knocked off the Bounty during a fight. (Wait which season was it, the uhh, vermillion warriors one? The oni one? Idk) Now, logically he could just airjutsu his way back up but for plot’s sake let’s just say the baddie got him in the head and so he’s disoriented and doesn’t realize he’s falling until he hears the others shriek his name and he has a split second to widen his eyes before—

Crunch-

What seems like an eternity later, Cole slowly comes to, and hears the sound of sobbing next to him, and a hand carding through his hair. He stirs, and there’s gasps as he slowly sits up, hand slipping slightly in something.

Opening his eyes he sees the team surrounding him, faces pale and eyes wide in shock. The hand falls from his hair and he absently recognizes it as Nya’s. He looks around, rubbing the back of his head.

“What happened? You guys look like someone just died.”

He chuckled at his joke before stopping when he noticed no one else was laughing with him.

“Okayyy… guys you’re really starting to freak me out, what happened?”

Slowly, Lloyd stepped forward, wary and still pale from shock. What he said next made Cole’s breath hitch and he felt as though his heart had stopped.

“Cole… you died. We found you with your neck snapped from the impact of the fall… you, you were dead for a good ten minutes before we found you..”

Static filled his head. Vaguely Cole recognized the substance his hand slipped in to be blood. His blood. He barely registered the concerned “Cole..?” before he was scrambling away from Nya, emptying his lunch on the pavement.

Dead. Cole had been dead. But then 15 minutes later, he came back. And there wasn’t a mark on him that implied otherwise.

So Cole and the others have realized that Cole… can’t die. At least not permanently. After the initial shock, Cole tries to act laid back about this, he laughs it off and says that it just lets him takes more risks while fighting to which both Nya and — surprisingly — Zane, slap him upside the head while Lloyd lectures him on how being immortal doesn’t mean he can’t be careful.

And then, nearly a week later, it sets in.

Cole is immortal. He can’t die. He can’t die. And the implications of that just about break him.

That night finds him on the deck of the Bounty with Zane, curled up and crying into his gi as the only other member of the team who shares his fate whispers soft comforts into his ear.

It is a small comfort, when they will both eventually outlive the rest of their family, but a comfort nonetheless that they’ll share this pain together.

Secretly, selfishly, Zane is grateful, for at least now he won’t be alone.

• Now you’ve actually met, you start noticing each other a lot more since he trains on the court near the skatepark. Nishinoya will offer a greeting or wave as he passes, not being brave enough to imitate conversation yet but you both work up to that.

• Eventually you meet up after you’ve finished skateboarding and Volleyball respectively, or assist the other in their independent practices once you grow comfortable. He’ll hold you to balance on the board, in return you throw balls for him to receive/dig.

• The sparks of romantic connection are there and soon your hangouts begin to mirror dates, just without the classification. You’ll do things outside of the park, like getting food or venturing to some cool place one of you had heard of.

• It's an adventure everyday with him, you were known to explore the streets of Miyagi - you'd found all of the skateparks, dropped into Ukais' store every so often much to his 'annoyance' and even got yourselves train passes.

• His team honestly do not believe him, even if the lovestruck grin he wears whenever he speaks of you is eerily convincing.

Asahi give him the benefit of the doubt, hence why he and Tanaka are the first to see a picture of you. Hinata also trusts in his Senpai, and Ukai begrudgingly confirms your existence having met you.

• Ōsaka? Been there. Yokohama? The dock has an amazing view. Tokyo? Some of the best Cafés in Japan. You could tell he had a sense of adventure, and you doubted Japan would keep him for long.

• It wasn't unusual for Nishinoya to come in with weird snacks or mementos for the team.

"Eh? Noya, where'd you get this?" Tanaka questions his bright friend, the item foreign of Miyagi garnering his attention.

"(Y/n) and I went to Tokyo the other day!"

"Without me?!" It seems you had a self-proclaimed Third Wheel™ on your hands now. You didn’t mind, his friends were pretty amazing.

• They first properly hear/met you when Karasuno are planning for exams, and Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama and Hinata are the main concerns due their lack of academic prowess - Noya is a sparkling ray of sunshine though.

"We got this Ryuu! My partner is super smart, and can help us study!"

"Have I ever told you how glad I am that you met (Y/n)?"

• Nishinoya calls you in the midst of chaos, voice all too happy to hear yours with the echoes of Karasuno muttering greeting in the background.

"Hey gorgeous! Think you could help Tanaka and I study? I'll buy your favourite foods as a thank you!"

"Yeah, it'll be useful for me too."

"(Y/N)-CHAN SAID YES!"

An array of cheers swarmed the phone causing you to wince, it's not like you were getting married but clearly the grades of these two were a problem.

• Nevertheless, the pair rocked up to your house with more snacks than study material - a twitch of your eye sent to them in disbelief. It only gets worse when you set up and ask about their preparations.

• "You... you don't have an exam schedule?"

"Nope~" They're far to gleeful about it and it's setting you on edge, honestly your heart is spasming at how uncoordinated they are. With no worries about it.

"Then how do you stay organised?"

A moment of silence passes, the two noting the pensive shift in atmosphere and meet your unnerved gaze with blank stares.

"...We don't...?"

• The slam of your head hitting the desk made them jump, a pained groan escaping as you took a much needed deep breath. This is gonna be tough.

• Nishinoya is quick-thinking, so he innocently leans in to kiss you as a distraction and a reward once you get on with the study session. Only, you whip out of the way so fast, the boy nearly face-plants the floor.

"(Y-y/n)?! What the heck was that for?" He’s pouting at you, puppy eyes sent your way as he catches himself whilst you simply sigh.

"No kisses until we're done studying."

"None? Like at all?! How am I gonna survive?"

"HAHA you got rejected SO HARD!" Tanakas laughter echoes around the room, the Spikers hand slapping your table in amusement.

"I don't recall you finishing your page either Tanaka-san." An expectant brow is raised his direction, a quick awkward cough sputtering from him with Nishinoya issuing a subtle smug smirk.

"...no, I'm - uh, I'm doing it..."

• You’ve set them up Notion accounts to keep themselves in check whilst you’re not around because honestly, you lacked the trust they’d do it themselves. They’re grateful though, hence the array of snacks/flowers (and screenshots of their revision) you received.

• Boys ACE their exams and come bombing into you after school thanking you and praising your organisation skills like a shrine. Then Yū catches you off guard with an excited kiss to your lips.

"You owe me~"

Yeah he's kinda right, and how could you deny?

• The whole Volleyball team is apparently really proud. Daichi politely requests if you could help Hinata and Kageyama too - but Yū swoops in promising to spare them. Or keep you to himself. It’s undecided...

• Either way, he’s all too glad to treat you to a trip to Tokyo - having found this cool Cat Café or skatepark online, the choice is yours. It’s his personal way of saying thank you for just being you.

Of course, Tanaka saw one of the pictures you posted and proceeded to text.

WATCH ME RAMBLE ABOUT THE HAMEHURA SPINOFF

My Next Life as a Villainess! All Routes Lead to Doom! have officially taken over my headspace, and I really want a platform to talk about it. I’ve read the manga and novels over and over again, and I’m so happy to seeing the reactions of everyone to each anime episodes.

Though surprisingly, other than obviously the original novel, what actually piqued my interest in the series is actually the spinoff manga for hamehura, “I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags... In a Dire Situation!? Verge of Destruction Arc”. Yes, it has a spinoff.

(This might be considered spoilers for the spinoff and anime, be warned!) I just want to ramble about it and give my critiques, opinions and expectations. My words might not make sense if you haven’t read the spinoff, but I think having a general gist of the events of the original anime/novel/manga is enough to read through my vents and rambles. also there’s screenshots here so there’s that. 

It’s basically the same plot as the anime, but if Katarina regained her memories of her past life during the events of Fortune Lover, within the school year, instead of when she was 8 years old like the original novel.

I don’t even really know if I’m in the right place to comment on it, considering it only has like 6 chapters (with the 7th one still being a month away) anyways and has a lot of time to expand and grow it’s concept, but gosh darn it, I want to talk about it!

I really really love the premise of the spinoff, and i think it’s much more compelling than the original novel. The novel wins by being more wholesome and heartfelt, but with the spinoff, we get to see Katarina play this “game” in hard mode” where she doesn’t have the connections that she would’ve had if she remembered sooner. There’s a sense of urgency in the plot that you don’t really have in the novel because she had already won everyone over before the game even begins. Both premises are charming, but this one really lifts up the concept of the title.

While I’d love to say that i’m excited to see this alternate version of the plot and find out how Katarina would solve herself out of her destruction, sadly the spinoff still follows the original material very religiously, preventing the spinoff as really coming out into its own (again, I could be wrong, there’s only 6 chapters so far after all but from what we have so far, it’s practically identical to the manga/novel). 

I think one of the greatest strengths of the spinoff is that it would take it’s time in the Magic School because Katarina only has one year to put the odds in her favor, instead of years, so it means we wont speed through her school life like the novel/anime/manga did. 

This is why my favorite part of the spinoff is Sienna, Katarina’s main underling when she was still the villainess of Fortune Lover. I love her because her existence provides a reason for the writer of the spinoff to find ways to insert her into the original plot, or to write new ones altogether in order to include what I imagine to be Katarina’s new best friend in this timeline.

Sienna’s existing can also be a sign of a possible future conflict regarding Katarina’s behavior post-accident. In the original novel/manga, it was okay for the snobby and spoiler Katarina to suddenly become dense and gluttonous, because she was 8 years old, and thus in the eyes of the adults, still had a lot of time to grow and develop her character. It’s still weird of course but it can be written off as such. With the event happening during the events of Fortune Lover, characters such as Maria and Geordo are obviously confused but her change of heart. Personally, I’d love to see her underlings and other students call her out on her behavior (especially since we are about to see the dynamic of Keith and Katarina in this timeline) because of how abrupt and sudden this change was. The spinoff tries to run away from this problem by writing off Mary and Alan as “not knowing much about Katarina other than rumors” but I doubt it, considering how much they would probably encounter each other in social gatherings and such. For them to not have an independent impression of her seems lazy to me to be honest, because not having an opinion on her means that she can act in any way that she wants and it can be considered as her being normal to them.

Because of how faithful this spinoff is to the original material, the banter that characters would have about Katarina feels undeserved, such as Geordo being possessive of Katarina during her interactions with Alan, despite not being interested in her until now. Bare in mind that at this point, Geordo had already met Maria (who piqued his interest during their first encounter, according to Katarina in the original novel) and only just gained interest in her fiance because of her out-of-nowhere change in personality. the banter between the twin princes doesn’t feel right when you factor in that he doesn’t care about Katarina enough (yet) to find his brother as a threat. To be honest, I wouldn’t even have this problem if the spinoff wasn’t so loyal.

This also opens up the question of how she will gain rapport with the characters in Fortune Lover. The spinoff pulled off Mary and Katarina’s friendship through their similar interests in gardening, but without the mistake of taking Alan’s in game dialogue, Mary has no reason to be attached to Katarina at all, and is definitely in love with Alan.

I mean i’d be okay if the spinoff writes off their relationship as just friends, but then again that ruins the charm that the original novel had (which is that Katarina catches love interests like she does with pokemon) which can be both a good thing and a bad thing (I don’t mind if they don’t have the harem, but maybe that makes it too far from the source material idk)

This is why I don’t want the spinoff to be religiously loyal to the source material! Keith’s introduction makes me nervous because there is absolutely no way that the spinoff can follow the original method of winning him over without making it look ridiculous, so obviously his route will have to be written from scratch. It’s not the rewrite that makes me nervous, it’s how similar it’d be from the original novel. The same would have to happen with Sophia (who has probably lived in fear and isolation without a real friend FOR YEARS), Nicol (who is intertwined with his sister), and Alan (depending on how far Maria is into the plot). From what i’ve seen from the spinoff so far, Katarina can still realistic gain the character’s of Fortune Lover as her allies, but they won’t be (or atleast might not be) as attached to her as they do in the original novel (like Mary and Sophia maybe)

My only biased exception to this is her and her maid Anne, because it’s pretty endearing to know that even the spoiled version of Katarina is still attached to Anne, so as long as they are together, she doesn’t really mind the difference. 

I would really love it if Katarina could gain allies outside of the established cast, to emphasize how different her situation is now that her circumstances are different due to the time of when her memories return. I just don’t want the spinoff to suddenly make the characters interested in Katarina, even though she’s lived her life until now as a spoiled and selfish noble.

This brings me to another concern of mine: Maria, the protagonist of Fortune Lover. So far, Katarina has already won over her friendship and has forgiven her and Sienna for their actions against her after seeing their efforts to fend off other harassers. My problem isn’t really how quickly she got won over or anything (despite this already solving her problem of being accused of orchestrating her bullying that could cause her end just before the final graduation event of the game), it’s more of what she represents.

You see, what made all the characters of Fortune Lover so attached to Katarina is that she lacks the outlook of a noble, being someone who lived as a normal school girl before being reincarnated. She is a very empathetic person who is able to sooth the worries of the characters but literally not seeing it at all (examples being Alan with his rivalry with his twin, and Mary & Sophia with their appearance). She alleviates the pain and worries of others by being what they need. In the original novel of My Next Life as a Villainess!, the readers/viewers already know that her villainess fate is already thwarted because she had already accomplished what Maria was supposed to do during the events of Fortune Lover (befriend Sophia = gain Nicol’s affections / interest Geordo = gain his affection / differentiate Alan & Geordo = gain Alan’s affections / be a first real source of comfort and company = gain Keith’s affections etc.)

I can’t really speculate on much of the plot of the game, but luckily the anime dvd box comes with the actual Fortune Lover game routes of the 4 boys so I might be able to comment on this better in the future. 

Maria is basically the same as Katarina (or Bakarina, if its less confusing); both characters are outsiders to the world of nobles and royalty, and it’s through their own personal outlook that they help and befriend the characters of the game. The spinoff would probably stick the two by the hip now that they’re friends in order to solve this problem, but it’s basically a race between the two of which of them can apply their personal quirks in getting the characters to ally with them. Again I can’t really speculate bc I don’t know the actual routes of the boys, but yeah. 

For example, Geordo has met the heroine while she was trying to climb a tree with a skirt, which he has never seen before, while her also being the pretty light-magic user commoner, and this definitely made her interesting to him (Note: this is an event that occurs canonically within the events of the game, Fortune Lover, but is not presented as something that had occurred in the manga). 

Now we have Katarina acting out of character and eating tons of sweets, while trying to salvage the dress of her peer after she spilled a drink on it, and this character change made her interesting to him as well. Katarina, considering her actual personality as time progresses in the story, is definitely much more interesting than Maria’s (I say that with biases of course) so Geordo would most likely find her to be the more unpredictable and interesting out of the two, but it looks like the only way (or what seems to already be the chosen way??) of writing the spinoff out of this mess is to make it appear like the Maria event didn’t or hasn’t happened yet, because while the original novel does state that Geordo would have fallen for Maria if he wasn’t already inlove with Katarina before they entered the Magic School, Geordo has yet to address his relationship with Maria. (yeah I get it there’s only 6 chapters yet jhgsdgfjsdg BUT STILL IT’S A LOT TO THINK ABOUT)

I don’t know what kind of dynamic Maria and Katarina would have in the spinoff, especially since you need to factor in Sienna, but in the original novel, Maria was pretty submissive to Katarina and would mostly just follow her lead. Maybe with this new friendship, Maria might not actively approach the main love interests (unless it’s by accident, since they don’t have to always save her from bullying Katarina and Sienna already try to solve that themselves) which gives time for Katarina to win them over with the quirky personality. At least, this is what I hope the spinoff goes for lol. (side note, it’s actually interesting to see what it’s like when Geordo literally only uses Katarina as a shield from other women, so when the shift from tool to romance occurs, i think it’ll be pretty nice to see)

To be honest I don’t even know what I’m rambling about, I’m sure I’ll love the spinoff regardless of what direction it takes lol. I’m just nervous because I really really love this concept an I want it to be different from the source material because it literally has the potential to be its own story (idk if this spinoff is even official at all, like I think it has the permission of Yamaguchi Satoru, but idk if its licensed)

Before I end this long ramble, I just want to note that i actual like the art style of the spinoff (illustrated by nishi) more than the original artist nami. I feel like this more simple artstyle captures the shift between Villainess Katarina and Bakarina more smoothly, while the original illustrations kinda makes it looked forced (mostly the manga tbh, the novel covers and art is fine). With nishi’s art, you can easily grasp that these two personalities are both Katarina.

What I'm not sure Shadow Weaver knows is that when she was first able to become She-Ra without the sword it was because she was terrified Catra was dead and furious at the people who hurt her!! Shadow Weaver is pulling some Light Hope "you don't need attachments" bullshit but Catra's the REASON she can still be She-Ra

oh also lol this is just funny to me, I saw a post Elsewhere Online where someone watched all of spop the first time and they HATED the dumb names everyone has, and I think they mentioned Castaspella specifically.

And like FIFTY PEOPLE responded with "dude they had to use the original names from the 1980's series" and I was the only one there old enough to have watched the original series and I had to point out: the original series was made to sell toys. The vast majority of cartoons in 1985 were only made to sell toys. They gave everyone those dumbass names because it was easy for kids to remember and beg for the toys."

That's also why all the female characters in the original series have the exact same body type. Yeah the body shape itself was due to 1980's-era sexism, but also? It was so much cheaper to animate the show AND make the toys that way!

But also, it's hella ironic to me that the 2018 show has so little official merch!

two things I really love about this: One, she doesn't say that she doesn't like Adora, just that it's not the reason she's going. Two, I feel like Adora knows damn well Catra's not being 100% honest here.

Like, to some extent Catra's saying this as a way of attempting to protect herself a little. She's taking baby steps towards vulnerability, and it's terrifying! And I think Adora can see that and is fine with it--not JUST because she's like "any crumbs are better than nothing" but ALSO because she doesn't want to push Catra.

Because yeah, if there was any actual doubt that Catra does like Adora--

WELL.

Entrapta was able to get Spinerella's chip out but says it had started fusing with her nervous system and they're running out of time to safely un-chip everyone.

But she's been digging around the network that connects all the chips to Prime, hoping to figure out how to disconnect everyone at once, and Bow gives her a little encouragement, it's really sweet.

OKAY so everyone who can, teleports to Mystacor with Melog making them invisible. (Apparently Catra doesn't get motion sick from it anymore which is nice lol)

Catra turns around and says "looks like there's no sorcerers here" while, unfortunately, a sorcerer walks into the room. Shadow Weaver grabs Catra and puts her hand over her mouth to keep her quiet, and Catra (understandably!! but unfortunately!!) jerks away in fury and yells

And her fury causes Melog to drop the invisibility

And now the chipped sorcerer knows they're all there

girl help why is this giving me so many emotions

y'know it's funny how often I've bumped into posts of people who are confused as to why Adora starts trusting Catra again so quickly, and I frequently wonder if they forget all the childhood flashback scenes of these two. To varying extents they both spent their entire childhoods seeing the other as their only consistent source of comfort and (something resembling) safety, and with some notable exceptions Adora's spent the last four seasons (which was like three or four years) visibly holding out hope that one day she could trust Catra again. This despite the fact that she now has other sources of safety and comfort and love!!! Being with Glimmer and Bow and everyone else was healing, sure; but it never erased her grief over losing Catra. She always, always held out the tiniest flame of hope that Catra would change sides.

And Catra basically tried lighting her own grief on fire (metaphorically and kinda literally) over and over and it just didn't go away, and I feel like when she saved Glimmer and apologized to Adora she had sort of come to terms with the fact that her grief over losing Adora couldn't be burned away, but of course by then she figured she'd fucked up so bad Adora would never forgive her or trust her again. And rather than take it out on other people or suffer any longer she was willing to just die, instead. She really did think that sending Glimmer to Adora was going to be her last act, and she wanted Adora to know she was sorry before she fucking DIED. And I don't think her saving Glimmer was consciously meant to be proof that she meant her apology, but it was. And that's part of why Adora trusts her again.

The fact is, even after everything that happened, both of them had a hole in their hearts shaped like the other. ;_;

And that's why Adora runs and hides behind the same pillar as Catra. (I mean yes, it was also closer, but that's not tHE POINT)

Anyway, this is all why, as I previously noted, Adora's not being pushy. That failed on her, spectacularly; the couple of times she tried it. Asking Catra to come along on this mission is the closest she's come. And even then, it wasn't "you're a good person deep down and you should change sides because I think I know you better than you know yourself," It was "please do this for me, because I need your help." And Catra is fully aware of how hard that is for Adora.

And these two still have a lot to work out post-canon (like, Catra has still got to deal with her need to not just be seen as Adora's sidekick/shadow, and lbh right now some of the rebellion is like "we're only putting up with you for Adora's sake" as if Catra was Yoko Ono) but that's part of why I'm writing a fic lolol

so obviously you’re asking about this AU bc of the Senjurou drawing yeah ? since i’ve only posted this for this AU oops unfortunately, like i said in the tags, Senjurou’s storyline is uh. kind of a spinoff ?

anyway i’m going to explain the basics of the general AU here, and we’ll see if i can manage to put some Senjurou in this and if not, well, i guess you’ll just have to ask for more ? (shameless bait)

so ! about that haunted hallway ! we’re dealing with a modern AU, based in part on the Kimetsu Academy stuff, but with some twists, the main one being the abandoned hallway in Kimetsu High that people are rumored to disappear in

when i first conceived this AU, it was like. basically an excuse to make fake visual novel screenshots ? (i mean, ok, when i first conceived this AU it was actually to write some Giyuu angst but then i got too invested and that’s how we got to the fake screenshots idea ANYWAY) so with this in mind we have main character and best boy Tanjirou who gets into high school, gets lost, and just as he’s about to enter the abandoned hallway, gets punted by some hooligan who, despite his violent ways, still helps him out and gives him directions

Tanjirou later decides to solve the 7 Mysteries of the school, as one does, the last one of them being the abandoned hallway. on the way, he makes friends with cowardly and genre-aware Zenitsu, wild and brash Inosuke (who may or may not be the true identity of the Mysterious Beauty on the Roof), actually-not-that-mean Sabito (who was the hooligan guarding the abandoned hallway), and quiet and mysterious Makomo (who keeps him updated on the latest rumors)

oh, and he discovers he can see ghosts too

which, in theory he always could, he just never realized that some people he talked to couldn’t be seen or heard by most folks. well, that explains some of the confusion there was at home sometimes

we also have other members of the cast who are mostly friendly, such as the old janitor Urokodaki (who Makomo calls dad), the depressed homeroom teacher Tomioka (who seems to have some connection to Sabito), or the cool history teacher Rengoku (who talks cheerfully about his little brother all the time)

in keeping with the fake visual novel theme, there’s like, multiple endings possible ? depending on how much Tanjirou figures out of the various mysteries. some are bad, some Very Bad, and others pretty good !

the worst ending is this : Tanjirou discovers almost nothing and still steps into the abandoned hallway, dooming himself to join the various ghosts of students who died to the evil spirit haunting the school. a few years later, he is asked for directions by a timid Senjurou, implying the cycle of death will continue

the spinoff is thankfully not based on this ending ! small mercies ! instead, the hallway (and school) is no longer haunted, and Senjurou finds himself a part-time job when he gets into high school, at the worst possible place, with the worst possible boss. ok that’s not true, he could be working for Muzan. second worst boss

You don’t sound stupid, like the article was informative as far as presenting the details of the situation but at the same time it gestured at but ultimately didn’t adequately engage with the systemic issues driving The Whole (and already very self-contradictory) Thing imo. But basically I guess yeah, becoming a nun (or to varying extents a bunch of other shit ranging from like becoming a tradwife or an incel or Jordan Peterson acolyte or salafist or someone whose identity is centrally composed of pop culture consumption or identification with any celebrity/public figure or being into #Mindfulness/Wellness/Goop/Alex Jones/QAnon or a million other things idek) can be enticing cause it appears to, and to a certain extent maybe actually does, alleviate the pain of dealing with living in the world today such as it is while also providing you with the sense of meaning/direction/community that we’re all fucking starved for but it’s ultimately a surface-level solution that only confronts the malign symptoms of the society we live in while the material/psychological issues that caused those symptoms to manifest wind up not being adequately addressed at all - so it’s a project that’s built upon an essential and fatal denial of the underlying factors that produced the society that so many of us find so intolerable to begin with which dooms it from the start + the fact that a lot of these kinds of things end up reproducing the same alienating/oppressive dynamics that are at play in the World at Large which they’ve superficially distinguished themselves from either because of that same lack of concern with those corrosive dynamic or because oppressive power structures form the foundation of a lot of seemingly transgressive/non-mainstream subcultures/worldviews. Idk. It’s kind of funny I guess that every single one of the people profiled seemed to have been drawn to becoming a Catholic Nun for motivations that were very emblematic of American Protestant culutre (I don’t mean to totally deride them and I think there are definitely aspects of this story that p much everyone can connect to that in there even if you’d hopefully be a bit more self-aware/critical of the actual effects/implications of your choices like jfc if someone did have a cult for me to join that was genuinely innocuous and like not a malevolent influence on the lives of others I’d fucking do it but Religious/moral fundamentalism is definitely and pretty self-evidently Not It Tho and that part was just extremely eye rolling if predicable)

nobody asked but like. okay. i need to get the thoughts out or they will consume me so here we go. ended up being a lot of character analysis on top of the visual storytelling but it’s me so what did we expect lol

first off, lets start with the character select

this i have seen other people talk about, but there’s no mistaking that she’s mirroring sora’s fighting stance- contrast this with previous installments

like this iconic scene from DDD, where it’s not even remotely similar. but that’s the dream worlds, and that’s not actually kairi- just sora’s manifestation of her. there’s definitely something to delve into there with regards to how they see themselves and each other, but that’s not this essay. so how about one of actually kairi?

there aren’t really a whole lot of good shots of kairi fighting in kh2 sadly, but its still *very* clearly not anywhere close to sora’s.

‘but she’s completely untrained here!’ i hear you say, and you are correct. in this scene as far as we the audience have seen this could be the first time she’s ever even held a weapon. her one-handed wild swinging certainly looks pretty haphazard and unrefined, BUT that doesn’t mean that she should fall into sora’s style upon getting any training. in fact if anything the opposite should be true, considering how many people have pointed out that sora’s own style is uh. not great, realistically speaking (but we give it a pass bc fantasy lol)

so what’s actually happening here?

MoM makes this clear actually. Kairi doesn’t beleive in herself. Like. At all. She’s actively shying away from her own style (though it shows through anyway at times, which I’ll try to touch on in a bit) because she doesn’t think she’s strong enough to do it on her own. Who does she beleive in then? sora of course. Who better than her best friend who’s saved both the universe and her personally multiple times?

this is undeniably doomed to fail of course, because kh very much pushes the being true to yourself and your heart narrative (and is one of the many reasons we love it), but it’s easy to see where she’s coming from. she’s scared and trying not to show it by copying someone she respects and something she knows works. entirely valid.

but enough about kairi’s incredibly terrible self-worth issues! on to the fighting!

the first thing of which i must note is that Kairi favours incredibly aggressive gameplay.

which, appropos of nothing, i adore. one step closer to the tank!kairi of my dreams here.

but more to the point, it’s very much a style that says ‘if i hit you first and i hit you hardest, you can’t hit me.’ which is. very important because, uh,

girl cannot take a hit.

‘that’s obviously ciritcal mode’ yes it is actually, but i did some cursory video scrubbing between different difficulties and kairi has consistently the least amount of hp between the playable characters, and the least amount of magic aside from Micheal Mouses’ absurdly miniscule one of course XD

but that? that’s a really good way to show that kairi IS underleveled compared to the rest of the cast. girl’s hanging on by the skin of her teeth and honestly? doing great considering that.

which brings us to point two(ish?): kairi’s voice lines.

obviously i can’t really screenshot this since it’s not subtitled and i don’t want to go to the trouble of embedding video, but one in particular stands out.

“Please work.”

as far as i can tell it’s not tied to any particular type of attack or animation, it’s completely random.. which tells me that any given thing she does she’s not wholly sure it’ll go the way she wants it to.

the answer to why is simple. yeah her and lea spent a big old hunk of time in ye old hyperbolic time chamber traning (unspecified), but there were some pretty big and obvious flaws to that in hindsight; the first of which being who was actually training them.

merlin.

remind *says* yen sid was, but the person in question is xehanort who straight up lies to kairi at least once during that fight (specifically about her memories not tying to sora, when it turns out they’re literally what makes riku getting to sora possible at all), but textually nothing actually supports that? i have my doubts as to exactly how much yen sid actually contributed to their training, and merlin is mentioned as having actually yknow. been there and overseeing them, so im inclined to beleive the majority of teaching was done by merlin.

who is probably a good teacher! at magic. he doesn’t exactly have a keyblade.

(as a side note while we’re talking about the time chamber shenanigans, i think this is also what failed lea too. he pretty notably was *also* not very good with his keyblade and sat out a pretty significant portion of the finale as a result. kairi’s just stands out more bc a) she dies which :/ and b) lea at least had previous games to establish his competency in other areas, wheras kairi has not)

so that’s problem one. problem two is... who exactly were they going to practice with? because it very much was made to sound like either and empty or still world, which means the *only* practice against other people either lea or kairi would have had against living opponents would have been each other and merlin. they have zero practice against people and i bet not a whole lot with heartless/etc either.

yeah, no wonder they floundered so hard in the graveyard. neither of them were properly equipped for it, and didn’t have time to despite the time chamber shenanigans.

to put this in other terms, at the end of kh3 kairi is working with and untested and altered version of sora’s endgame kh1 skill level (which while good, clearly falls short of the current scenario), and lea is a level 57 rogue trying to work with a level 5 fighter skillset. he reverts to his chakrams as much as he possibly can and honestly? can’t really blame him.

speaking of lea, let’s take a look at a couple of kairi’s attacks.

* wipes tear * my baby, all grown up and chucking her keyblade at people.

one could argue this is a variation on sora’s strike raid and i won’t say they’re wrong, it’s certainly possible, but personally i think she learned this one from someone else, who speciallises in throwing his weapons around willy nilly and occassionally teleporting.

i will note that axelea has not demonstrated much for in-battle teleporting since CoM, but eh i thought it’d mention it anyway.

even putting that aside though there’s something about the fluidity of how kairi does her throw-teleport that feels distinctly remniscant of the flurry of dancing flames. not to mention that kairi employs a number of throw based moves in her move set- and honestly i think that’s a great way to show how she was learning from axel as much as she was learning from their actual teacher.

further side note, kairi employs a magic based barrier for blocking, something shared with riku and aqua. i’ll not get into parallel analysis here bc that’s a deep rabbit hole but i do like it a lot. also makes sense considering, yknow. merlin. magic. yeah that tracks. too bad lea doesn’t appear to have learned it lol.

she’s alo got an attack that looks very similar to aqua’s spellweaver. which is... interesting. especially considering it’s a pretty unique attack looking as far as i’m aware. i love this little highlight of her connection to aqua, but it does make me wonder how exactly she learned it. some bit of her subconscious remembering from when aqua saved her as a kid? possible. hard to say though. it’s a bit of a stretch admittedly, could just be a nice little visual nod.

honestly though overall i think the one attack that kairi has that is completely her own style is her shotlock. which is Rad As Hell and i love it to death.

anyway, moving on from dry ‘blah blah this is the attack’ stuff, lets look at MoM.

no not that one.

there we go.

MoM’s ending has been... pretty divisive amongst fans wrt kairi to say the least. and i won’t say there isn’t legitimate critisism to be had there, but to me MoM really highlighted sort of.. what’s going on with Kairi personally and finally (FINALLY) laid the stepping stones for her to assert her own agency.

whether or not the series will do anything with them remains to be seen, but i beleive the idea is there.

but i digress, in terms of MoM itself, as i said earlier it really highlights how much kairi does not beleive in her own ability to fight- contrast this with riku’s inability to beleive in his ability to help.. they really are kinda direct opposites in a lot of ways.

‘why couldn’t she land a single hit on xehanort when she clearly did in remind?!’ not to get snarky, but kairi straight up says that xehanort is an illusion created by her memories. he’s a literal metaphor for her past defeat and helplessness. if kairi doesn’t beleive in herself, how can she defeat this demon that haunts her? i get that people want kairi to just Be A Badass Now (including me, i would also like to see her smack shit with confidence), but that’s not how this series works. every main character barring perhaps the wayfinders had to work their way up and kairi is no exception.

also like.. she did honestly fantastic in that fight? kairi makes up for her lack of experiance by fighting fucking smart.

getting jerked around by some asshole? just fucking. let go of your keyblade

and summon it back.

this is a really underutilised idea in kh tbh- sora’s done it.. once? i think? maybe twice across the whole series. i feel like someone else pulled it off too but i can’t remember at the moment.

but kairi? kairi does this *twice*. in *one fight*.

and here’s where i think the genius in the MoM ending lies; it is directly contrasting Kairi’s self doubt, insecurities, regret, and fear of failing with how far she has already come growing into someone who can stand on their own... they just need a little help.

and that’s the crux of the matter, bc as always kh’s plot might be convoluted and layered (my god the layers in this series) but that plot is ultimately not actually the point. the point is the character feelings, how they react and grow and change. kairi has, for a very, very long time stood out as.. something of an outlier to the cast, as far as her personal feelings and agency go (ie theyre... not really present at best, or straight up unaccounted for at worst).

which is why, and i hate to say this, it would have in the long run felt just as bland and empty as before if they had just instantly bumped her up to warrior badass status.

and i can hear ya’ll angry typing already, but please hear me out.

if that bump had occured after kh2, it probably would have been fine. the assumption would have been that riku and sora could have trained her, they could have done some sparring and stuff between 2 and ddd.

but that’s not what happened.

if she had popped out of the hyperbolic time chamber and gone into 3 and not been... damseled, that would have beeeeeeen a little off but i think most people would have bought it. god knows i would have, after how much emphasis the leadup to 3 put on her being able to fight too.

but that’s not what happened.

the narrative went the way it did in canon, and suddenly side turning it *AFTER* all that would have felt unearned. because what actually happened is that kairi (and lea) went in horrifically undertrained and unprepared, both got hurt, and kairi got used. the end result is kairi is now faces incredible guilt over sora’s loss.

the end result is, now she has to earn it, narratively.

which, and im putting a big old future-depending asterisk here, i think she’s doing, or at least working towards, by asking to train with aqua. she’s displaying her own decisions and agency- honestly kind of for the first time since she said ‘they should just take the raft and go’ without riku in kh1. her role in the plot before this was mostly just.. incidental. she was given her keyblade, we didn’t see her actively choose to be on the guardians of light, she’s always just kind of... there. seeing her actively choose? it feels good. it feels very very good.

but as always, we’ll see how it goes.

Say what you will about kairi’s wasted narrative potential (it’s bad, i know) but I have so many thoughts about the amazing visual storytelling that is her playable fight in remind and the following confrontation in MoM
