BLUEBEARD'S EIGHTH WIFE (1938): Frustratingly clumsy Ernst Lubitsch romantic comedy starring Gary Cooper as an oft-married American millionaire who falls for an opportunistic Frenchwoman (Claudette Colbert), who really just wants to marry and divorce him as quickly as possible so she can start collecting his fat alimony checks and thereby revive the fortunes of her broke marquis father (Edward Everett Horton). With this cast, a Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script, and the famed Lubitsch Touch, it seems like it ought to be a winner, but it's sunk by a disastrous lack of narrative direction and various unwelcome lapses in taste.

There are some very funny bits and an assortment of memorable throwaway lines, but the story lurches and lumbers, the main characters are unsympathetic in ways that aren't very funny, and Wilder and Brackett seem to have assumed that domestic violence was inherently hilarious. (In one particularly disagreeable scene, the Colbert character drunkenly urges her husband to kiss her, only to reveal that she's deliberately just eaten a handful of raw onions, to which she knows he's deathly allergic; he responds by threatening, with disconcerting seriousness, to murder her in her hotel suite, an escalation that's apparently intended to compensate for the lack of any actual punchline.) Cooper seems badly out of his depth, alternating between stoic stiffness and clumsy mugging, which means he's constantly being upstaged by the supporting cast (in particular Horton, who steals every scene he's in without apparent effort). There are some great pieces scattered throughout BLUEBEARD'S, but when it's bad, which it too often is, it's dreadful — one of the worst films from one of the world's great comedy directors.

MIDNIGHT (1939): Less than a year after BLUEBEARD'S EIGHTH WIFE, Wilder and Brackett redeemed themselves with this sparkling CINDERELLA variation, directed by Mitchell Leisen. Again set in Paris, it also stars Colbert, who's in rare form as Eve Peabody, a gold-digging American chorine who masquerades as a Hungarian baroness with the aid of a wealthy fairy godfather (John Barrymore) who wants her to deflect the interest of a suave playboy (Francis Lederer) who's been making time with his beloved wife (Mary Astor). This is complicated by the arrival of the handsome Hungarian-born taxi driver (Don Ameche) whose name Eve has borrowed, who's been looking for her all over the city since she ghosted him.

Using CINDERELLA as a framework gives MIDNIGHT the structure BLUEBEARD'S desperately needed, and the fluidity with which the story's various complications unfold is a delight. Better still, Leisen brings out the best in a mostly superlative cast — just watching their expressions is a lot of fun — and gives the proceedings the air of Lubitschian wit and sophistication that Lubitsch himself had recently failed to deliver. MIDNIGHT does stumble a bit at the end, with the final scenes (featuring Monty Woolley as an irrascible judge) succumbing to the heavy-handed mugging the rest of the film had mostly resisted, but it's not bad enough to sour the stew. As a result, MIDNIGHT is at least in the 85th percentile of screwball comedies, able to stand comparison with better-known classics of the genre.

In spite of that bit of information--or perhaps because of it, he still had very little expectation of what this Mora could do. Probably party tricks at best. "Yeah, they tend to do that," Miller said, laughing a little at what Link said towards the end. "And I expect them to be very difficult to convince, too. Knife skills are about the most basic thing you learn at the academy."

Hmmm…I know there is already a Young Whit series (which I need to read one day) but some more Spy Jason stories would be fun…like how he got into being a spy and whatnot (Monty too for that matter, or Everett Meltsner, I need more about both of them 😔✊)

Lowkey the timeline…like I don’t want characters to die but it’s also like “bro how old is Connie???” And there like isn’t an answer so some of the stuff doesn’t always line up/is confusing in that sense (and I miss the kids getting to grow up, like I love hearing them as kids but I feel like the Parker kids have been the same age for a decade and haven’t aged even a little. At least Buck seems to be at least 16 so he’s aged a *little* bit 😂)

Growing up in the Appalachian region of the states, Everette always knew they were different than their family. They never quite seemed to fit in. They didnt know why, of course. How could a little kid know why their cousins didnt want to play with them, or why theyd exchange a glance and giggle when Everette talked about something they liked. They tried to fit in, they really did. They wanted to. Theyd pretend to understand the things their family liked but they could just never wuite get into it. Rather than watch scary movies and sleep on the floor of their nanas basement, they wouldve liked to watch movies based on books they liked. Or even just talk about the books they liked without being cut off.

School was better. Everette had friends they could talk to for once, people that wouldnt shut them out or shun them. Sure people still picked on them but that was nothing new. Home.. wasnt so good though. Everettes parents werent bad parents, dont be mistaken. But that doesnt mean they were deserving of any sort of reward. They did the best with what they had really. Everettes older brother was an oops baby, and they got married. Everettes themself was an oops baby too, somehow even more so than their brother. They were too little to understand why mommy was screaming at daddy, or why daddy wouldnt read them a story some nights. They didnt understand why daddy was sleeping on the couch when they got up for school in the morning or why mommy stopped coming to church with them. Their brother did his best to shield them from the worst of it, but he could only do so much. Eventually Everette would start finding mommys wine.

Everette had at least one person in the family they felt normal around, besides their brother. And that was their uncle. He didnt come around often, only Christmas, Thanksgiving, the occasional easter. But Everette was always excited to see him. And everytime he had a new little trinket for Everette. Everyone bit Everette seemed to know why the card shuffled by themself and why the character on the card they had would sometimes disappear. But no one would tell Everette. They remember their uncle trying to, once or twice. But their mother always stopped him. And then it was another fight..

The first time their Uncle came around for a birthday was their 11th. Wizards dont typically get their letters on their birthdays, but their uncle pulled a few strings to give Everette their early. The only people excited were Everette and their Uncle. Their dad looked.. sad? It wasnt an expression that Everette recognized. Their mother looked angry. Which Everette immediately knew. It wasnt until they were 11 that they were told their uncle worked for MACUSA, and Ministrys American organization. And it wasnt until Everette was 11 that they were told they were also a wizard.

It was a hard few weeks after that. Everette doesnt remember most of it. But they do remember the relief on their brothers face when they were told Everette was going to live with their uncle from then on. Everette was not so relieved. They didnt want to leave their brother, why would they ever want that? They were assured theyd get to come back for summer and Christmas, but their brother was already sixteen by then. Hed be off before long. But their brother knew it was best. He knew Everette didnt need to be around for the oncoming divorce. The one that was years in the making. Years coming.

It was hard to get adjusted to Scotland. A whole new country, that Everette felt distinctly out lf place in. They didnt look like anyone sround them, or at least not many people around them and it was hard to understand the new accents. Their uncle was a help of course. Teaching them the new vocabulary and how to understand the people around them.

He seemed the most excited. Everette was told that for years he was the only wizard in their family. Not since some distant guy Everette couldn't remember the name of. He was glad to finally be able to share this with someone. Everette was glad to finally feel normal. To finally not be the black sheep.

And soon enough, their uncle was walking them to the train platform. And the look of confusion on the poor things face ehen they were instructed to walk through a pillar. It was a shock, for sure. To talk through brick to see hundreds of students just like them, and a big red train.

A kiss on the head, and the securing of robes. The securing of hair and one final hug, they got on the train.

And they sat beside a girl who looked just like them.

Nov. 4th: Sheen had been with Monty for about a month, getting him from the prison, traveling to and through Two with him, and getting to know the rest of his family beyond Everett. He had finally decided to check on his house in One, to see if it was burned down or ransacked. He told Monty he'd see him back at the Capitol, made his farewells, and headed off to One with Shimmer. Surprisingly, his house for the most part was fine. The grass was longer than he would have liked. There was a broken window upstairs, looked like someone made a bet to see if they could hit it. Annoyingly, they had. Purely out of habit, Sheen stuck his hand in the mailbox, not sure if there would actually be anything, doubting it, and yet, his fingers felt an all too familiar envelope and his heartbeat started to pick up. His mother was still using the same stationery. She had fallen in love with it when he was six, and she must not have found anything to replace that joy for it. Once he and Shimmer were settled in the house, he played with the letter sitting at his kitchen table. He debated burning it, tearing it up, reading it. After eleven years why would she reach out now? He wasn't surprised they had survived. He wouldn't be surprised if she had already had lunch with Tera. His parents were good at surviving, and coming out on top in every situation. Finally, he sighed and tore open the envelope to read what she wanted.

Beni, My Dearest Darling Beautiful Baby Boy,

I have sent this letter to both your home in One and any address I could get for you in the Capitol. I know it has been quite some time since we have spoken, but in light of everything, your father and I have done quite a bit of self-reflecting. We know we did not rise up to be the best parents we could have been. For that, we are deeply sorry. Yet, this letter is written with urgency. We need you, now more than ever. Your father has been summoned to serve the nation in the armed forces. He says he is up to the task, but we both know he is not, me and you, my darling boy. He will die if he goes into service. Nov. 6th: His fist hit the door, knocking on it softly and then too hard. Sheen was trying not to shake. He was scared.....the last time he was ever this scared, he was laying on a beach spitting blood out of his mouth, certain he was about to be killed. Don't sweat, don't stutter, don't cry when they opened the door kept running through his head. If he did any of those things it would instantly give her the advantage in the conversation. Don't let her take the advantage. The door opened, and there his mother was. She still somehow looked.....impeccable. Not a hair out of place, a perfectly styled outfit, matching jewelry. If anyone was able to do that in this crisis, he wasn't surprised it was his mother. His mother......the smile that pulled on her face....

"Beni." The moment she said it, he started to cry, audible ugly crying.

"Mommy." He felt her arms wrapping around him, pulling him into a hug, and he was crying into her. He was terrified of her, hated her, loathed her, he could count on his hands how many times he had been hugged, and yet, he loved her and right now this was the only place he wanted to be, in his mother's arms.

"My darling baby Beni. It's ok, it's ok. I'm here." She was petting the back of his head, and they stayed there like that for a few minutes. She just held him as he cried into her. He didn't know why he was crying, or what he was crying over, but he felt like a child again. It wasn't until she spoke again that he stopped.

"And this must be Shimmer! We've seen so many pictures of him, we have so many pictures clipped from magazines in frames on our mantle of him, the two of you together." Her hand rested on his face, a thumb wiping one of his tears away. He couldn't help but think about the time he asked for a dog as a child, and he was forced to sleep outside in a doghouse, and yet now here she was confessing they had pictures of his dog on their mantle. "Your father and I, have never stopped following what you've done. We are so proud of you. Come on let's get inside."

Sheen knew his parents taught him more of the skills he used in the arena than most, but he hadn't expected them to use the same skills outside of it. As he was getting ready to leave his mother was running a hand through his hair, and then it moved to rest on his stomach, "You know, you really have grown into your teeth. And those moles. My darling baby boy. You do look so good now. Like the Victor you were always meant to be." And then she gave him two pats on the stomach, before her hand moved up his back, running along where the scars were, and then giving where he was bitten by the mutt on his shoulder a squeeze. "Mommy's perfect little champion. You don't know how much you doing this means to me. Your father and I.......we both love you, very much."

Sheen could only nod, he felt like he was seven again. How many nights had he laid in bed crying, confused as to why his parents couldn't tell him that. Now here he was being told how much they loved him because he was going into an active combat zone for them, and it was at the tail end of his mother once again, in her little ways judging, shaming how he looked. When she had squeezed his shoulder it felt like the jaguar sinking its teeth into him again. "I love you too, Mommy."

As he and Shimmer walked back to his house in the village, and were a safe distance that she couldn't see, Sheen had to stop to throw up in some bushes and wipe away the tears.

Nov. 12th: "Sheen Benitoite Lux? I'm General Calico Weave. You have undergone our military recruitment evaluation process for the past five days correct?"

Sheen nodded his head, "Correct, Ma'am."

"I am looking through the report compiled on you in that time, and I must say.....your athletics.....survival skills....they're a lot higher than most people we've seen. Even other, well what you could call Careers."

"I suppose you could thank my parents for that special training. They asked the Academy to go harder on me. They went harder on me. They wanted me to be better than a Career. They wanted me to be a Victor." Sheen watched the General nod her head, he wasn't sure if she was worried or judging what he went through, her face didn't make it known.

"Well during your evaluations, while you passed with some of the highest scores I have seen, a few things came up, that I personally wanted to enquire about. First, during intake, during your physical, you recoiled at the mirror, and wouldn't undress for the doctor until something was put over it. Then, on day 3, you struggled quite a bit with the swimming test. That was quite surprising to us, and then finally......your.....you didn't show much worry at the thought of having to take lives. Can you please elaborate on why that was?"

Sheen nodded his head, not surprised that those were the things that would get flagged. Wetting his lip, he took a drink of the water that had been offered.

"My parent's training wasn't just training at times. They used mirrors to help model me into their idea of a perfect victor. Once I turned about six, if I cried they put me in front of a mirror to show me how silly I looked crying. When I was 10, they started on a weekly basis, putting me in front of a mirror in my underwear to evaluate what on my body needed work. Looking at my reflection.....it reminds me of those moments. Though ma'am, I suppose there aren't many mirrors on the front lines." The General shook her head and affirmed that there weren't.

"It's not water that scares me, but rather larger bodies of water. I can do bathtubs finally, but pools....lakes...the ocean reminds me of my arena. The sharks that were inside the water. If that disqualifies me than I need to make sure that my father won't still be taken in my place. Finally as for the....last worry. I don't have any desire to take life, if that's what you're worried about. I don't want to hurt people. I am not joining so I can kill. I am joining to save my father. The reason killing doesn't bother me is because I have killed. In the arena, eight people. I realize now as I did then, that anyone I kill or killed is because I have to. I had to in the arena so that I could live. I have to now so that Panem can survive."

There was a long pause, the General taking in what Sheen said. She finally wrote a few things down and then nodded her head. "I am going to tell you this because you're doing a good thing. You're volunteering to save someone who sounds like they don't deserve it. We are desperate. The enemy is tougher, and more ruthless than we could have expected. This will not be easy, but evidently, you are used to that. I get the final say over your recruitment, and your combat scores are so high, I would be an idiot to reject you because you're not afraid to kill or scared of a pool.

You deploy on November 24th to District Seven, which should limit exposure to large bodies of water. In addition, because of your experiences and your test results, and how desperate we are. We are signing you on as a Major. You'll be the lowest of our most senior ranks, but I think you can do a lot of good for our soldiers. Vox and Panem thank you for your service. Go take the time you have left to say goodbye to the people you care about."

· jordan is his closest friend but he treats them as poorly as he treats everyone else lol. they dont particularly care for luka and antagonize him on purpose by being overly flirty/touchy with jordan when they're all in the same space. both jordan and epsilon are also friends with monroe; epsilon WOULD do the same to monty but she respects his bfs way more than she respects jordan’s

· about as close to being normal as any of my darling ocs could be bc if they discovered that anyone they knew were hurting people theyd call the cops on them. theyre the only one of my darlings that’d do that lmfao

Kaylo Crescendo's Court of Children

(This is a DIFFERENT Kaylo. Not the one from my Balan Wonderworld stories)

So, I had this idea in my head for a while now, and it involves Kaylo, and the idea of her having a court, since she's the ruler of a kingdom. This however is no ordinary court. This consists of various children from throughout the Multiverse. So, I'm gonna list them out here.

Rules of the Court:

Any Child that joins the court MUST be at or under 16 years old (it's the Court of CHILDREN. Not teens or adults.)

The only people that know about the Court HAVE to be close to said Child (parents, close friends, family) other than that it's a complete secret (at least from mortals)

All kids in the court must take the "Immortal Promise" (A special pinkie Promise like ritual that ensures that a child freezes in the aging process. They can not, and WILL not age, as long as they have this promise
