BLUEBEARD'S EIGHTH WIFE (1938): Frustratingly clumsy Ernst Lubitsch romantic comedy starring Gary Cooper as an oft-married American millionaire who falls for an opportunistic Frenchwoman (Claudette Colbert), who really just wants to marry and divorce him as quickly as possible so she can start collecting his fat alimony checks and thereby revive the fortunes of her broke marquis father (Edward Everett Horton). With this cast, a Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script, and the famed Lubitsch Touch, it seems like it ought to be a winner, but it's sunk by a disastrous lack of narrative direction and various unwelcome lapses in taste.
There are some very funny bits and an assortment of memorable throwaway lines, but the story lurches and lumbers, the main characters are unsympathetic in ways that aren't very funny, and Wilder and Brackett seem to have assumed that domestic violence was inherently hilarious. (In one particularly disagreeable scene, the Colbert character drunkenly urges her husband to kiss her, only to reveal that she's deliberately just eaten a handful of raw onions, to which she knows he's deathly allergic; he responds by threatening, with disconcerting seriousness, to murder her in her hotel suite, an escalation that's apparently intended to compensate for the lack of any actual punchline.) Cooper seems badly out of his depth, alternating between stoic stiffness and clumsy mugging, which means he's constantly being upstaged by the supporting cast (in particular Horton, who steals every scene he's in without apparent effort). There are some great pieces scattered throughout BLUEBEARD'S, but when it's bad, which it too often is, it's dreadful â one of the worst films from one of the world's great comedy directors.
MIDNIGHT (1939): Less than a year after BLUEBEARD'S EIGHTH WIFE, Wilder and Brackett redeemed themselves with this sparkling CINDERELLA variation, directed by Mitchell Leisen. Again set in Paris, it also stars Colbert, who's in rare form as Eve Peabody, a gold-digging American chorine who masquerades as a Hungarian baroness with the aid of a wealthy fairy godfather (John Barrymore) who wants her to deflect the interest of a suave playboy (Francis Lederer) who's been making time with his beloved wife (Mary Astor). This is complicated by the arrival of the handsome Hungarian-born taxi driver (Don Ameche) whose name Eve has borrowed, who's been looking for her all over the city since she ghosted him.
Using CINDERELLA as a framework gives MIDNIGHT the structure BLUEBEARD'S desperately needed, and the fluidity with which the story's various complications unfold is a delight. Better still, Leisen brings out the best in a mostly superlative cast â just watching their expressions is a lot of fun â and gives the proceedings the air of Lubitschian wit and sophistication that Lubitsch himself had recently failed to deliver. MIDNIGHT does stumble a bit at the end, with the final scenes (featuring Monty Woolley as an irrascible judge) succumbing to the heavy-handed mugging the rest of the film had mostly resisted, but it's not bad enough to sour the stew. As a result, MIDNIGHT is at least in the 85th percentile of screwball comedies, able to stand comparison with better-known classics of the genre.

"Parts of it." she elaborated, showing him the specifics. "I had it done after the tower exploded. wanted a little more protection, I'm not super fast at running away. but, okay... so my skirt guards, right here, those are bulletproof. and the purse I've always got hanging on my back, that is too. So all I'd need to do is spin and duck." it wasn't perfect protection, but it had her feeling a little safer, in the event of another tower explosion.
"That's..." hard, and there was no way around that. "and in twelve, too." everyone in panem knew people in twelve hardly had enough to get by, much less to rebuild. "I'm glad nothing happened to seven. seems more like the slate special than a new normal." if every district got bombed after winning, Link wasn't sure she could justify trying to bring victors home anymore. at least that wasn't a looming threat.
"Wait, you serious?" Everett asked, all focus lost at the thought of a bulletproof wheelchair. "Thing's bulletproof for real?" He peered at it. "Anyway you'd have to be facing the other way, you know, running away, in order for it to catch the bullet."
He smiled a little, made the same 'manly' pose that he'd been asked to make by the photographer -- a puffing out of the chest, broadening the shoulders, flexing ... well, everything. "You think? It's all editing." But he was strong; had stayed that way ever since the Quell. Terrified of being thrown back in. Not wanting to lose to a toothpick again.
"It's... I mean... It's not good," he said, unable to think of anything positive to say. "A lot of rubble, a lot of dead."

Monty met Everett in the middle, putting an arm up and over his shoulder. He winced, perhaps a bit dramatically, as his ribs compressed, but he also couldn't deny that the relief of his brother, tangibly safe, was worth the pain.
He found a chuckle in his throat. "Yeah, well, I've never been one to let people tell me what I can and can't say. It's why I've got -" he jerked a thumb over his shoulder at his escort.
"Oh, how rude of me," he said, voice dripping with acid. "Jericho. This is my brother, Everett. Say hello." Monty gave his brother an icy grin and whispered, "He won't." Sure enough, Jericho remained silent.
"Everett, this is Jericho. Apparently from around here. My new best friend and closest companion, sent from the Vox themselves to keep an eye on me while I do their bidding." He rolled his eyes hard enough to strain a muscle in his forehead. "Don't worry. Anything you would say to me, you can say to him. It will be kept in strictest confidence and shared directly with Vox leadership."
Everett had been sent to Two to train new cadets, people sent from across Panem who wanted to join the Vox forces, but no one was clear on what they would be fighting for anymore, and there were far fewer cadets than had been anticipated. But he spent each day at the Academy anyway, training the people who did show up, who did volunteer. But everything was topsy-turvy, it all felt strange and backward. And a big part of that -- Monty. He had a hard time pinning down reliable information about his brother, and he feared seeming too interested lest the Vox think his loyalty wasn't truly with them.
So when Monty came home -- finally, finally, everyone accounted for -- he breathed a sigh of relief, getting up from where he'd been sitting, cleaning his gun at the dining table. "Ah, careful, brother, we don't say Snow anymore," he said, stepping forward and opening his arms to hug him, because he couldn't say it was a relief, it was a huge fucking relief to have Monty home and safe, but he felt it.

NAME OF REQUESTED CHARACTER:
Helios Cannon
AGE RANGE:
30 - 33 (he is the second-born Cannon child)
FACECLAIM:
UTP, but M and Virginia would suggest: Skylar Astin, Andy Samberg, Penn Badgley, Jonathan Bailey, or Andrew Garfield.
POSITION / JOB:
Current canon is he's a clerk for a judge in Two, with aspirations of running for political office. He's also currently arrested by the Vox.
CONNECTION TO CHARACTER:
Montgomery Cannon's younger brother; Everett Cannon's older brother
BACKGROUND:
Helios was not raised for the Games, though is likely a staunch loyalist and supporter of the Games. He's been described as "not a fighting type." He would have benefitted from Monty's (and Everett's eventual) Victory.
Contact M (Montgomery Cannon) or Virginia (Everett Cannon) for more details.

Monty raised his eyebrows in soft dismissal. He dragged his thumb down his neck, encouraging the taut muscles to relax. He had too much to do tonight to be this tense. He took a steadying breath and shook out his shoulders. All he wanted was for this conversation to go smoothly. And hey, if he could also get back in the at-least-neutral graces of Cade, all the better.
âLike I said: whatever.â But no, that wasnât satisfactory. âYou invited me,â he said, scrunching his nose. âAnd what does you seeing someone have anything to do with it? How you manage your relationships is up to you. Hell, invite him along next time. Could be fun.â
"Banned?!" Cade echoed, a little too loud. He had been freaking out, but he hadn't been trying to get Monty banned from anywhere. All he'd done was--
Oh. Oh, he realized now how that looked, what he might think if someone came up to his bar and the same thing happened. For a moment, he stood there, mouth hanging open, trying to scramble for something to say that might make things right.
Rum. Drink with run. He cleared his throat, grasping around for the ingredients for a daiquiri. "I didn't-- that's not what it was," he tried to explain as he fumbled with the bottles, trying to get his story straight. How much did he already know? What had Everett told him? "I thought you'd be a stranger and I'm already with uh-- someone else," he attempted, wincing as he realized, delayed, that didn't sound much better either.

3-6, 10, & 17-20 for Adventures in Odyssey, please?
3. quickly list 3 things you like about the story!
Characters that I adore, really good messages/stories, integrity, they donât compromise on the Bible and what it says
4. assign this story a hyper-specific genre name, e.g. "inspirational religious semi-horror sci-fi western"
Uhhhhh hmmmmmâŠ.Christian/spy/adventure/mystery/will make you cry on occasion
5. do you have a favorite character? who?
*glances at my #1 Buck Oliver Fan Tshirt* gee, I wonderâŠ.đ (I also love Connie, Wooton, Jason, Jules, JayâŠand so many others lol)
6. do you have a LEAST favorite character? who?
HmmmâŠthere are a few, and honestly Iâm probably forgetting one but Blackguard is always a good answer đ
10. if you made an amv about this, what song would you set it to?
âŠI genuinely have no idea đ
17. compare this story to your usual tastes. how does it differ from what you've already enjoyed?
HmmmâŠI donât really think it differs much, honestly I wouldnât be surprised if it shaped some of my tastes tbh
18. compare this story to your usual tastes. what parts of it are exactly the kind of thing you've always loved?
Good stories with good morals, characters that make me laugh and that just feel real. The family dynamics, found family especially đ
19. pitch an idea for a sequel or spinoff novel for this story!
HmmmâŠI know there is already a Young Whit series (which I need to read one day) but some more Spy Jason stories would be funâŠlike how he got into being a spy and whatnot (Monty too for that matter, or Everett Meltsner, I need more about both of them đâ)
20. what's the WORST thing about this story, in your opinion? (feel free to be positive, e.g. "it's not longer", if you want!)
Lowkey the timelineâŠlike I donât want characters to die but itâs also like âbro how old is Connie???â And there like isnât an answer so some of the stuff doesnât always line up/is confusing in that sense (and I miss the kids getting to grow up, like I love hearing them as kids but I feel like the Parker kids have been the same age for a decade and havenât aged even a little. At least Buck seems to be at least 16 so heâs aged a *little* bit đ)

Monty hadn't exactly settled into the Tower. He was back in a new role, with new responsibilities, and - honestly - a new outlook on the Games. They were back. Despite everything he had been through, the capture, the imprisonment, the suffering... it was always going to lead back to this. This Tower, these Games, this meaning.
Monty had been vindicated.
And yet it was with some trepidation that he reentered the Tower. Where he was once revered, he could feel the darting eyes of people who stood against what he had fought for - and what had ultimately won out. Why were all these people mad at him? After all, he had simply said the Games should continue, and the all-loved Terra Cacus had ended up agreeing with him. Had they all, then, not fought for the same cause? The unification of Panem through the glory of the Games?
There was still one, unfortunately outstanding point of contention in Monty's life - but maybe today was not the day to address it. After all, Everett had volunteered. That was honorable in its own right. To go willingly into battle, even if it was in support of the Vox. Or - perhaps it was better to imagine it this way - in defense of Panem. Yes, that was something Monty could get behind: not that Everett had gone to fight for the Vox, but rather against the Tarrens.
And so it was with an easy enough joy, with an easy enough relief that he saw his little brother in the lobby. In the Capitol, safe, and Mentoring - all things Monty was proud to see Everett embodying. "Ev," he called, his emotions belying themselves in that one syllable. "Guess I won't be fighting exclusively for Two this go round."
#t: everett 10#137#if i could ever write a starter that wasn't a rambling mess#that would be neat#alas!

A knife, of course. That made sense. What other weapons could someone living in District 3 procure if not the one readily available in their kitchen? In spite of that bit of information--or perhaps because of it, he still had very little expectation of what this Mora could do. Probably party tricks at best. "Yeah, they tend to do that," Miller said, laughing a little at what Link said towards the end. "And I expect them to be very difficult to convince, too. Knife skills are about the most basic thing you learn at the academy."
âsheâs good with a knife.â Link had seen her parry her way around threeâs kitchen. maybe it was the lack of expectation or much knowledge herself, but link had been impressed to see it. âmaybe. twoâs seem strong, this games. and honestly, I think moraâs going to walk up to the careers either way. Iâd love for them not to kill her on sight, sheâd be an asset.â
#idk why he keeps blasting m's characters like monty in the thread with everett and mora in this one#sorry m it's not targeted i swear lmao#para: link#link#132

"What're the chances Monty uses this is as his chance to try and double victor?" Cain wondered, settling next to Everett. The announcement of the reaping twist had stirred the room, but for Careers it didn't make too much of a difference, he didn't think. Yeah, there'd be more competition in volunteering, but the academies would still probably be pushing their early 20s over everyone else who was suddenly back in the bowl. They were fitter, more resilient, and closer to their training. It didn't make sense to change their existing plan. Still, it made for kind of a fun thought experiment. "Oh, fuck. I wonder if my dad will finally go for it. He could put his bad knee to the test and try to show me up," he laughed, pulling his drink to his lips.
