Poll time, yet again ❎

This isn't what I'd call a problem per se, but I'm writing at a pace my posting cannot keep up with, even with me currently posting 5 fics a month—4 for JJK from a roster of 5 and 1 for MCU/Bleach. This'd be fine, but posting for MCU and Bleach long after leaving those fandoms has made it clear that I will significantly slow down on posting for those regardless of the size of my backlog. While I continue to love sharing those stories, the editing process becomes more of a chore than usual, and I just...sit on those. I'd like to avoid that as much as possible with JJK.

I'm still very firmly in the JJK sauce and haven't slowed down any, but I'd rather do this while I'm at the zenith of my inspiration, so these fics (which are the longest among my unposted JJK fics) can see the light of Ao3 while they and I are both hot, so to speak.

I'm upping my ongoing JJK roster from five to six, though whether the updates will increase to five a month or stay four a month remains to be seen. I can handle both based on monthly energy levels and have drawn up schedules for each, but I might run another poll for that to see what y'all can take. But that's for later.

the ghost in me was true (but you were haunted too): No-Shibuya AU where Gojou sends Yuuji out of the country after he eats all the fingers. Yuuji goes AWOL a year in and reappears 12 years later without any memories. Gojou doesn’t deal with that too well. Goyuu.

Shibuya Swap

(this is also part of the story) how the story changes: Just as the PR ensnares Gojou, canon!Yuuji switches places with his older self from an alternate dimension where he’s Gojou’s teacher. Goyuu.

Mundane Unclekuna

bloodstains on the collar means just don't ask: Mundane AU Yuuji’s sexual awakening is his big, mean uncle and then his high school teacher makes him realize he just has a specific type in men. Goyuu and Sukuita.

Surprise Rut Sex

taking the flesh is the only virtue: Yuuji goes into premature rut after the vs Mahito arc, and Nanami ends up “helping” before Gojou shows up to escalate matters. Goyuu and Nanaita.

was looking through my camera roll & realized i never posted about this?? but i did a check please theme in my bullet journal back in april & i am still beyond obsessed with how it turned out!

task list & cover page

april was all about finishing my fucking thesis (i earned my mfa in stage automation in may) & i used the task list to break down each section of my thesis & make it less intimidating. i still pulled a bitty & had to marathon write most of my thesis within a like 36 hour period. i slept so good once that draft was finished!

when i started planning this theme, i flipped through the comic & decided pretty quickly i wanted the cover to be this view of faber from 4.25 "faber". i filled the outside with some of my favorite details from throughout the comic, including (clockwise from top left) the "text from chowder: i'm shouting!" from 4.2 "nonstop celly", jack's "oh" moment from 2.17 "graduation", the jack lego (?) figure from 3.1 "wag", dex & nursey's background roach & house bubbles & (i think it's) ransom's "et tu lardo?" bubble from 2.12 "post i: roadie", one of my fave senor bun appearances that didn't make it into a weekly from 1.16 "linemates", & bitty's phone (i don't think there's a specific appearance of bitty's phone that looks like this, at least not that i'm finding in the flip-throughs i've done to write this post. i think i did a lil freehand moment with it, but if anyone happens to find it in the comic, let me know!), as well as my usual little calendar & monthly focuses section

monthly calendar & habit tracker

the monthly calendar & playlist is inspired by the smh team roster hanging on the bulletin board in the haus at the beginning of year 2

the habit tracker features a few other details from 2.1 “moved in”, namely the “haus sweet haus” rug & the sock pinned to the bulletin board. the shopping list bubble is a callback to the “jizz!” speech bubble also pinned to the bulletin board next to the sock

meal & time trackers

the breakfast, lunch, & dinner headers are a callback to the hockey puck taped to the bulletin board

not much to add here, but it’s a great time to mention the “it’s tough but you’re tougher” speech bubble from 4.20 “spotlight on eric bittle” which was the quote i used to decorate my grad cap ❤️

weekly #1 is modeled after y1 & features my favorite y1 senor bun appearance (1.18 “playoffs - i”) & line (1.8 “checking clinic”)

weekly #2 is modeled after y2 & features my favorite y2 senor bun (2.10 "shinny") & line (2.4 "hazeapalooza")

weekly #3 is modeled after y3 & features my favorite y3 senor bun (3.3 "meet the falconers") & line (3.26 "cup v - post")

weekly #4 is modeled after y4 (the layout of the top panel specifically is modeled after the first panel of 4.16 "christmas in madison - iii" which shows a bunch of the christmas pics/posts from the rest of smh & tater) & features my favorite y4 senor bun (4.17 "senior thesis") & line (also 4.17 "senior thesis"). i has some extra space, so i included some excerpts from bitty's y4 tweets

camp nanowrimo tracker, before the pen. the left is just a table for tracking time spent on & words written for my thesis & the novel i've been working on forever. my camp nanowrimo goal was to write 1 hour every weekend day & 2 hours every week day, for a grand total of 50 hours, which i am proud to say i achieved! the right is a visual tracker, where each pie was equal to an hour of writing. i included 50 pies for my 50 hour goal. the bubble near the top is from 1.4 "the haus" with 2 footnotes i added; one on "kitchens" that says "word docs", & one on "pies" that says "words". clearly i think i'm very clever lol

visual tracker, filled in. i surpassed my 50 hour goal with about a week left in the month, & i wanted to include that additional progress on my tracker. once the month was done & i knew how much i needed to add, i made a tip-in (although this might just be a fold-out lol) to tape in. on one side, i included the dialogue bubbles from a panel of 3.19 "keagster"

on the other side of the tip-in/flip-out, i included jam jars for the additional 10.25 hours of writing i did, plus "it's gonna be two trips" also from 3.19 "keagster"

& that's all the spreads! spreads were done in an archer & olive b5 notebook. supplies include: mildliners in the colors vermillion, dark blue, beige, & gray; a black papermate flair, a white gellyroll pen in size 08, and stabilo pens in gray and brown. oh, & a piece of masking tape, bc i couldn't find any clear tape lol

That was the first rule that Christian told you on your first day. Your only offense was telling him that you loved him. He didn't want to lose his control of the locker room. That day on you always addressed him by Mr. Cage while working.

Months passed by and everything was great. The two of you were proficient and professional towards each other. The locker room started to get a little too comfortable around you. They flirted and teased you when he wasn't around. Sometimes the guys weren't exactly always friendly with you.

"So, how do we go about getting our flavor of the month to be our assistant?" Frankie asked while staring at you. He didn't hide that he didn't like Christian which meant he didn't like you. This wasn't his first time being a jack ass to you.

"You would have to talk to Mr. Khan about hiring someone to be your assistant. I'm not a monthly special I am a lifetime guarantee," you quipped back. He glared daggers into you. Never the one to back down from a war of words, you were always ready for him.

"Come on," he scoffed and shrugged his shoulders. He turned his head side to side to make sure Christian wasn't around. "There are a lot younger guys than him on this roster. He's on borrowed time here. What does he even do for you? I could definitely use your services longer,"

"That is never going to happen,"

"You know I bet his ex-wife thought she was a lifetime guarantee too,"

You tried to keep your anger in check. This dude was such an ass. You were about to say something until Christian stepped between the two of you. You couldn't see his face but his demeanor showed he was pissed.

"We got a problem here, Frankie?" He asked. Christian's eyes never left him. As Frankie backed down Christian pushed forward. His chest stuck out to make himself bigger.

"No problem here. Y/N and I were just talking about business,"

"Next time you need to say anything to her, run it by me first," Christian ordered. His tough guy exterior never breaking down. "I catch you even looking at her we'll have problems,"

Frankie rolled his eyes at the two of you and walked away. Christian wrapped an arm around your waist and rubbed your side gently. He made you promise to tell him if he ever bothered you again.

welcome to emma's spreadsheets part 2 ; a guide !

navigation ; same as last time! this page is mostly for aesthetics so it looks more cohesive in my google drive but it is still functional. every box links to the spreadsheeet it's titled

draft ; this sheet has probably changed the most! so i've added the country they're from and their team for each player, and each round is color cordinated (in rainbow order. 7 rounds = 7 colors). and then everything else is the same, the round, the pick in the round, and then their overall pick. plus the team and the player ofc. the notes is simply to indicate if the pick was traded.

division standings ; so these are the more indepth standings. it's hard to read but this is why i have explanations. so obviously each division has it's own section. from left to right, the data is: team, games played, wins, losses, overtime losses, points, point percentage, goals for, goals against, goal differential, home record, and away record. for the cells that have 0 or the error one... those are the cells that have an equation so games played, points, point percentage, and differential. it just calculates that for me so i don't have to put every single thing in!

conference standings ; these are the exact same as the division ones except it's compared to their whole conference

wild card standings ; so i've changed this one since last time so it looks like how the standings are in nhl. it's a more simplified then the division and conference ones so it's just games played, wins, losses, overtime losses, and points. this is merely just to show who is in the playoffs and stuff. (also yes, i'm aware the title isn't centered, it won't be)

playoff game logs ; new sheet! so i have each round of the playoffs and each matchup has their own set of game logs (what game number it is 1-7, final score, who won, and the current record). um the reason why round one, round two, and the stanley cup finals do not have game logs is because i grouped the rows and collapsed them so that way people can just look at the playoff round they want and not all of it, makes it less overwhelming

playoff bracket ; okay so i did my best to line these up but i gave up bc i got frustrated but anyway. it's just the same bracket you would see nhl post, left side is western conference with central on top and pacfic on bottom, right side is eastern with atlantic on top and metro on bottom. i also have the amount of games they won next to the team

transaction log ; this got a huge update. so i condensed the two different sections into one. then i'll just write the date, type of transaction (free agency, waiver claims, signing, contract extension, trade, injured reserve, recall/demotion, or contract termination, and then any notes (who it's for, money and such, yeah)

preseason ; so this is where it gets tedious in my opinion. on the left side is each game individually; the game date, who they played, if it was home or away, final score, if they won, lost, or lost in overtime, and then if the game went to overtime, what kind (ot, shootout - rounds 1-3, or shootout rounds 4+). then on the right is their final record for preseason and then the same stats that i have for the division/conference standings. (same thing where all the ones that have info in it already are just the cells that have equations). going back to the games, they are colorcoded by the outcome; blue for wins, purple for losses, and green for overtime losses.

regular season games ; everything is the same regrading the games and their colors and stats. the only thing different is the right side. the purple box at the top i'll put their overall record and their monthly record. and then the red boxes are for the stats, the top one will have their monthly stats and the bottom one will be the overall stats through whatever month ofc.

other notes ; i'm still deciding if i want to make a roster page but if i do i'll probably do it has the final roster/playoff roster and not the beginning of the year one. the only reason i don't have an option for overtime win is because they get the same amount of points if they win in overtime comapred to if they won in regular. plus, i always mark if it had an overtime or not so yeah!

An observation based on these posts I've made.

It's been longtime commonly accepted wisdom that Naoko Takeuchi didn't know how to do villains well in the Sailor Moon manga, and that the 90s anime handled villains much better.

And I have to say....

No, that's wrong!

The truth is actually a little more complicated than that.

Naoko Takeuchi has, in fact, written some fleshed-out and nuanced villains. Danburite, Kunzite, Queen Beryl, Rubeus, Esmeraude, Safir, Prince Demande, Professor Tomoe, the Amazoness Quartet, Sailor Tin Nyanko, Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnemosyne, and Sailor Galaxia are all more than just "evil"; they have established backstories and motivations behind what they do and distinguishable personalities. So is Kaolinite in Sailor Moon Crystal, which was supervised by Takeuchi, becoming more sympathetic than just the wicked witch she was in the manga. And of course, Evil Endymion and Black Lady are corrupted heroes.

Meanwhile, we also have Queen Metalia, Wiseman / Death Phantom, Pharaoh 90 and Mistress 9, Zirconia / Queen Nehelenia and Chaos, who are intentionally devoid of nuance because they are supposed to be pure evil. Yes, the anime changed that in regards to Zirconia / Queen Nehelenia and that worked well (in SuperS anyway, fuck Sailor Stars), but that doesn't make Takeuchi's take any less valid or effective for her version of the story.

So which villains are just one-note and existing to be fought and killed in the manga?

Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, Koan, Berthier, Petz, Calaveras, Chiral and Achiral, Eudial, Mimete, Viluy, Tellu, Cyprine/Ptilol, Fish Eye, Tiger's Eye, Hawk's Eye, Xenotime and Zeolite, Sailor Iron Mouse, Sailor Aluminum Seiren, Sailor Lead Crow, Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon, Sailor Phi and Chi, and basically all of the Dark Agency's roster serving under Danburite.

And here's where I must mount a defense of Takeuchi. Yes, the anime fleshes many of those villains out greatly and I am happy for it. However, it is a fallacy to treat their roles in the manga the same as they were in the anime. In the anime, these characters are part of a formula that positions them as Subordinate Villains, the ones who control the Monsters-of-the-Week. But the manga worked differently. It was a monthly publication, with each arc lasting around a year and the chapters' contents plotted out in advance. In that more limited timeframe, these villains were not controllers of the Monsters-of-the-Week; they were the Monsters-of-the-Week...er, I mean, Monsters-of-the-Month. Complaining about them not being well developed is kind of like complaining that any Youma, Droid, Daimon, Lemures or Phage in the anime isn't well-developed. It's kind of missing the point. And yes, I know that Kunzite, Tin Nyanko, and Lethe/Mnemosyne are also technically among this type of character yet they were more strongly humanized in what time they had, but they're exceptions and not the rule (with Kunzite it happened due to personal fondness Takeuchi felt toward him; and for the others it was due to the need to flesh out Shadow Galactica as an organization, showing both the validity behind why many of its members joined and the ultimate mistake it was due to Sailor Galaxia's psychopathic ruthlessness toward any she deems failures or traitors).

So there you have it. By and large, yes, I do prefer the anime's takes on villains. But Naoko Takeuchi's writing for villains doesn't suck, it's just meeting the needs of a different medium.

Settled at his writing desk in his New York apartment, Ron considered the lists of people he had pencilled down to sort out gifts for carefully. Family and the London Lot were catered for and as to his Stateside Pals -- bar maybe one or two, he was golden; had things got or things in the planning, no bother. A quick double check, pencil run down the edge of each list, indicated the same and so Ron sat back, pondering his next move.

He wanted something...more. To do something more this year since the city he now called home had welcomed him so completely. Business was booming, new connections were being made and nurtured, next year's performance roster was already locked in...He couldn't have asked for more in his wildest, and it was all down...

Well.

In part to him and the close-circle people round him, of course, but there were people beyond them he couldn't have done a damn thing without. His staff. There were eight of them front of house, eight more in the kitchen under May's hawk-like but also motherly gaze, three under Pat working security and that was that; a relatively small crew who'd made this Venture of his so resounding a success it'd spent every month of its first year open deep in the black for profits. Without that crew he'd amount to nothing and he knew it and so he was up and out his chair in a flurry and hurrying off to find May.

Two hours, a pot of tea and a close look at the online banking figures later, Ron sent a text round to his crew - all nineteen of 'em (discounting darling May herself and Pat, both of whom he'd already sorted festive gestures for) It read: [Update on Christmas bonuses - come by my office when you're next on shift, please. No bother. No drama. Just jingle bells].

He weren't about to tell 'em any more than that - it'd ruin the surprise. Weren't every day the boss took you aside one by one, asked what your biggest monthly outgoing was and paid it gross, wholesale for the coming three months, aye?

First month of the New Year and I've got a lot of fun ideas and plans for 2024! Let's dive right in!

XMACX MONTHLY UPDATES AND "COVERS"

First off, I'm introducing XMACX MONTHLY! It'll be a public post that -- ideally -- goes out on the first of every month. It'll include the schedule and plan for the coming month along with a cover image! I really miss drawing monthly character illustrations and I thought it'd be fun to also include non-patrons in polls so here's what I was thinking:

Everyone gets a chance to vote on the cover model for next month's issue, but patrons can vote on the outfit and/or theme for the cover!

For now, the characters I'd like to focus on drawing are my OCs, so the options for cover models will be limited to my OC roster. I have so many! I'd like to shine a light on them some time... And I was thinking, since magazines typically have "cover stories", OC Lore posts can be about the cover model! What are OC Lore posts? This leads me into my next topic...

PROJECT LINE UP

Last year was a pretty busy year for me due to a lot of family stuff, work, and travel. I didn't have as many opportunities as I would have liked to draw my OCs and work on my personal projects. This year, I'll be cutting back on commissions and taking on other projects so I can focus more on my dreams of creating and sharing original stories. Here's the order in which I'd like to work on projects and a lil blurb about each:

Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate Voiced Update

Currently, I'm still working on adding the voiced lines and new artwork to Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate. Tentative release date will be some time in March for the public, some time in February for patrons. 

Froot Basket White

The third and last installment of the Furuta Basketball "Froot Basket" series. It will be from Jordan's perspective and will be a direct sequel to Froot Basket Valentine. I'd like this project to be released episodically -- one new route every month or two, 7 routes total. I'm considering making it fully voiced...

Fleeting

My BL scifi horror visual novel! It follows Cadet Masa Takeshiro. It's been a while since I've worked on this project and I'd like to update the demo with everything new I've learned in the last few years. A "face lift" if you will in almost all aspects including writing and UI.

"Kaimana Comic"

It is currently unnamed but in-universe time-wise, it picks up some time after Fleeting. I don't expect to publish the comic at all this year. I'd just like to start thumbnailing it.

Other Projects

I have some other smaller projects like that Dogsitter one I was working on. I'm saving those for when I get frustrated. Those will be my "cool off" projects.

TLDR : when consuming long running storytelling such as manga make sure to take your time reading it and allow yourself to go back and reread it in between big story set pieces to keep yourself immersed.

I'm trying to post here in the hopes that i can get myself back into the habit of writing ideas down and finding out how i like to express myself and since i don't have to worry about having an audience or anyone read this i can just ramble about things i like which is nice. now onto the topic at hand, Recently Ive been doing a reread of Choujin x.

I've been following the series from the day the first chapter dropped on the Shonen jump website back in 2021 and my enjoyment of the series on my first read was volatile at some points. For some reason I was just having so much trouble following the events of the story and the arcs of the characters while staying invested adding to my confusion was that i was having this much of a struggle only around 20 chapters into the story. Unable to really put my finger on what was spoiling my enjoyment so i did what i usually do when i am struggling with a piece of media, i went back and read the whole thing again.

I can't remember whether i had figured this out before or after my first reread but my problem was not with the contents of the story but rather the way i was consuming it.

I read a lot of weekly manga, I'm fairly certain i had caught up to One piece, Naruto and a few other series by the time i was 13. this created a habit of mine where i would binge a series as quickly as possible and then add it to my roster of weekly releases that i had to keep up with. This system is generally pretty effective but the longer a story continues the easier it is to lose track of the events within the story.

With series on a monthly or later basis, it's pretty common for me to just let chapters build up for while and come back when i feel like Ive got enough to sink my teeth into.

there is a lot more to my reading process that isn't really relevant or important but i promise guys i have really good media literacy you just have to believe me i swear i am doing my best over here.

Earlier i mentioned that Choujin X started releasing in 2021, at the time of writing this post it is very early 2025 and the manga currently is up to chapter 59-2. This is because the author Sui Ishida has control over when they finish and releases chapters allowing them to take as much time as he needs to create the story they want to make. sometimes the gaps between chapters is a week or two, sometimes a month or two passes without a release.

While not a massive difference in the grand scheme of things, i had become very used to consuming my manga in binges or weekly scheduled releases and doing neither for this series led me to get very confused.

After going back and reading back to where i was and feeling satisfied with my grasp on the story, I started with my new approach to reading it. In this approach I'd follow the story as it released and then as i felt an a big moment building or the end of an arc was approaching i would go back and reread the story from either the start of said arc or a point further back where i thought a relevant detail might lie. This approach was baller as hell and i soon started applying it to most things i read in general. (i think i was already doing it a bit but it was definitely more intentional afterwards).

Anyway i think i want people to think about the way they consume stories i guess because this does generally apply to all types of art but i specifically want to see a bit more of it in discourse online because i am sort of haunted by the weekly Jujutsu Kaisen discourse that occurred during the final arc and i desperately want to see Shonen Jump produce more series where the author has complete control over the release schedule (I think it could be one of the most important developments for the industry and i want people to be on board with it but maybe ill elaborate more on that later)

anyway this wasn't written well to begin with, didn't get any more coherent as it went on and definitely went to shit at the end but i feel pretty alright with that.

Brief (?), Rapid-Fire (??) Musings on the Current State of the Monthly Superman Titles

Challenging myself to NOT go on a bunch of different long-winded tangents...we'll see how it goes. XD

Gonna start with the bad so that the post ends on a positive note. XD

The twelve part weekly Waid Action Comics just wrapped, and I gotta admit, it was kind of a huge letdown, at least in my opinion.

Lots of talented folks working on it, but ultimately the whole thing felt pretty boring/boilerplate. I guess 'filler' might be the easiest way to describe the whole thing.

And that's kind of been the vibe of this 'Action Comics Superstars' initiative. The rotating roster of creators means that the book feels like it's in a constant state of shuffle and has very little connective tissue between storylines.

Like. Is John Ridley gonna build on this recent Mon-El/Phantom Zone arc stuff? Probably not! So unless I'm a big fan of the writer or artist involved, why should I remain subscribed to this book on a monthly basis?

DC has essentially made one of the two ongoing, monthly Superman titles skippable. Which sucks.

Also, NGL, the Tamaki/Patridge Supergirl backup story was a whole lotta nothing. XD

I've seen complaints re: Tamaki's characterization of Kara, but honestly that wasn't even my issue with this story. The pacing was really bad and the new character they introduced was needlessly cryptic for entirely too long.

Also, Power Girl did not need to be here. XD

Supposedly the whole secret mission is like. Tied into her Krypton trauma and I really wasn't getting that from the writing or art.

Anyways. I bring this all up because we get a promise that Supergirl's adventures 'will continue in 2025!'

No indication if this means a miniseries, an ongoing, or another backup feature, nor if this creative team will be returning.

...Put a pin in this, we'll get back to it at the end. XD

I'm not reading the Power Girl series. I'm sure it's fine. XD

Saw that Jon Kent will be appearing in a new Secret Six title, which...uh...okay.

(My personal opinion on Jon currently is that he's annoying in the same way that Dick Grayson is annoying; T*m T*ylor has turned the both of them into unproblematic soft bois, too affably bland to really care about anymore.)

Absolute Superman is fine. I'm personally not nearly as enamored as everyone else is with the Absolute line --it feels like a glorified Elseworlds title to me.

Also, Jason Aaron's 'new take' on Superman is that he grew up on Krypton, and his family was part of the labor guide as opposed to the science guild.

(You put Kara in glasses and people won't shut up about how she's a Clark clone, meanwhile Absolute Clark is just New-52 Supergirl and the book gets critical acclaim.)

(I'm halfway convinced that if they ever deign to introduce an 'Absolute Supergirl', she'll be part of the snobby, scientific elite and her character arc will be learning that 'classism is bad, actually'.)

(Who am I kidding, if they do announce new Absolute titles starring women, they will almost certainly be either Harley Quinn or Catwoman.)

Art's cool, though!

Okay, time to get to positive stuff.

I genuinely enjoyed Superman #21. Like. Full stop.

Am I a sucker for any book drawn by Dan Mora? YES. But also, this might be the first time in nearly two years that the book slowed down and focused on the internal lives of Lois and Clark.

Finally, FINALLY, we see how the plot stuff is affecting these characters on an emotional level.

Also, the fan-servicey cameo serves the plot instead of being there for the sake of being referential.

(Helps that Mora is a modern master who can balance the dynamic action stuff with genuine character acting. His panel pacing is also a nice mix of big, flashy set-pieces, and quieter, character focused beats.)

I still think 'Time-Trapper-Is-Doomsday' feels really stupid...and I live in mortal fear of this:

But generally, I dig the cliffhanger introduced at the end of the issue, and I'm actually engaged with the title for the first time since Campbell left the book.

Okay, so. This next one is kinda weird.

In the recent issue of DC Connect that contained the March 2025 solicits, it was revealed that PKJ has a new Superman book coming out, and the blurb says that it'll follow up on the threads introduced in his Action Comics run as well as his Future State stuff.

So like. EXCITING. Right???

But PKJ himself has not shared the news, and, weirdly, all the sites running the DC solicits left it out.

I wonder if this means it'll be pushed back or resolicited? But it's currently slated for release in March, so...?

I guess we might get more insight/info in the next round of solicits, maybe? Like, if we see that the second issue is there with a release date, or if it's absent, etc.

Either way, PRAISE BE.

Even if it does get pushed back, just knowing that we'll be getting more PKJ Superman is wonderful, and frankly? Is why I'm not going into the 2025 DC titles completely demoralized. XD

So by now we've done the bad and the good, time to get into the speculate-y. XD

As mentioned, we got the little tease that Supergirl will have some sort of presence in 2025. Time to ruminate on what that could look like.

Worst case scenario, and entirely too possible for my liking: Either another backup feature or oneshot with the same creative team of Tamaki and Patridge. This would be easy, from a scheduling and money standpoint, and is in line with the scattering of appearances Kara has had since Woman of Tomorrow.

Slightly better scenario, and still arguably likely: mini series with this same creative team. DC's current go-to with characters outside of the trinity/classic JL lineup is like. Six issues with their non A-List (read: not the same five or so white guys) creators. We saw it with Steel and Superboy; I'm halfway convinced the only reason Power Girl is an ongoing is because they were really banking on Geoff Johns' JSA being more of a Thing...and if they canned their only other ongoing Superman title, starring a woman, it'd be a bad look, so here we are. XD

Now. Some Thoughts.

Obviously, it's a super character. It's got the 'S'

I've seen folks speculate like, 'NEW SUPERGIRL SUIT???' I don't think that's the case; important to keep in mind that Anka has largely been working in animation for the past several years, out of the monthly comics game, so this is *most likely* a variant cover.

Variant covers are the Wild West of canon content; does it even match what's inside the comic? POSSIBLY, NO. XD

(Also it would be wild to tease a big new costume change for their current in-continuity stuff in a random Bluesky post.)

ALSO. Let us not forget that some of that aforementioned animation work that Anka did involved designs for My Adventures with Superman.

And I don't know about y'all, but that sure looks like a cape scarf to me...sort of similar to the look MAWS Kara was sporting at the end of season two.

HmMMmmMmmmMMMm.

My best guess: We're getting more MAWS tie-in comics. That are unrelated to whatever they were teasing at the end of Action Comics.

As a reminder: this is all just speculation, it's entirely possible that I am WAY off (heck, Anka didn't even really specify if this was a comic cover, it could be ANYTHING) so you know. Grain of salt, etc. XD

But anyways, thus concludes this lengthy list! I think I did a pretty good job of keeping it focused, though. XD (I deleted so many tangents. So. So many.)

TL;DR: I'm looking forward to PKJ's return, whenever that will be, and I suppose I'm...morbidly curious about the future of Supergirl comics??? XD I guess we'll see!

Little Gold Men Podcast: Inside Hollywood

Two generations ago, print magazines existed as a primary form of communication, cultural exchange, and social commentary. The advent of the digital age has issued a terminal notice to print magazines with only limited methods for recovery. 

Vanity Fair is an American monthly magazine of popular culture, fashion, and current affairs published by Condé Nast in the US. It was, at one time, at the center of the social and cultural discussion. 

The first version of Vanity Fair was published from 1913 to 1936. The imprint was revived in 1983 after Condé Nast took over the magazine company. Vanity Fair currently includes five international editions of the magazine -- United Kingdom (since 1991), Italy (since 2003), Spain (since 2008), France (since 2013), and Mexico (since 2015). As of 2018, the Editor-in-Chief is Radhika Jones.

Like more nimble companies that own print magazines, Vanity Fair (VF) has adapted. It now has an impressive roster of podcasts -- from Inside The Hive to Still Watching. What I admire about VF's podcast roster is that the shows coalesce around similar themes, so the audience's expectations are met. Remember the CW TV network before it got acquired by Nexstar and essentially disemboweled in 2022? The CW was the home of young adult entertainment from Riverdale to The Flash to Supergirl. Viewers knew to expect, and the network actively recruited these viewers. 

VF's podcast are at the intersection of entertainment, culture, and supporting industries. The podcasts are not tell-alls about Reality TV and melodramatic trashiness. 

Little Gold Men is a Vanity Fair podcast that details the inside story of Hollywood, from awards shows and red-carpet premieres to the hard work and whisper campaigns that get people there. Weekly episodes feature conversations about the best of television and film, with special guest appearances from stars, creators, and critics. Little Gold Men also dives deep into Oscar history, and offers insight into all the other awards that make up Hollywood’s continual dash toward glitz and glory. As a bonus, the pair shares their favorite memories of each other from their time on SNL.

 Another excellent episode was the May 7th interview with Emmy winner Jean Smart by VF senior Hollywood correspondent Julie Miller about the third season of Hacks. The interview ranged from the show's increased physical demands on the actress to the deepening of her relationship with co-star Hannah Einbinder. Then, staff writer Savannah Walsh caught up with Nicole Beharie, the scene-stealing powerhouse who brought The Morning Show to new heights.

Little Gold Men is an ideal podcast for those who are fascinated by the "behind the scenes" view of Hollywood, which includes TV and film.

Sonic the Oz-Hog: The Unfortunately Obligatory Self-Aggrandizing Introductory Post-a-Roony.

Some of humanity's finest and beloved stories are built on myths. Tales of grandeur passed down through generations, further embellished with each storyteller's spin. Unequivocal, unquestionable, and under no uncertain terms the real deal. At least until something strides along to suggest otherwise.

Modern fandoms are hardly different. Be it trying to reconcile conflicting facts or pushing their own biased agendas to win worthless arguments, the myths automatically evolve into facts. Conventional wisdom dictates Thunderbirds co-creator Gerry Anderson always hated puppets, an opinion he expressed later in life yet was quite the opposite in its heyday. The warehouse in Toronto intentionally hoarding dozens of missing Doctor Who episodes omni rumour which plagued fans through the early 90's. Or the established "truth" Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman loathes Venus DeMilo, when he has gone on public record multiple times how proud he is of the character.

Hardly equivocal to the above examples, let alone important in the grander scheme of life, is the purported "fact" the former Sonic the Hedgehog comics produced by Archie were purely a United States product and never made available to anybody living elsewhere around the globe.

A bizarre patriotism effort? Cheap shots trying to downplay the comic for one reason or another? Who's to say? If only Archie had printed some type of page in each issue which fans could skim hoping to find their names. And were such a mythical page to exist, it may furthermore list which countries their monthly stack of letters originate. Diverse cultures spanning through the lands such as Canada, The Bahamas, Brazil, Trinidad, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Norway, Germany, Qatar, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore or New Zealand.

And maybe, just maybe, the majority of those budding fan letters and art beyond the US and Canada could be traced back to… Australia?

Farfetched to be sure, but no more than anything the writers and editors used to conjure up.

It astounds to think how Archie Sonic is culturally dead and buried, has been for years and will never see the light of day again beyond a miracle, yet continues drawing an active fanbase. Much as it goes against my sensibilities and would rather never think about this series again, it's sad seeing myths such as above persist among new and old fans as irrefutable gospel. They will continue so long as nobody sets the records straight, and when some bright spark in the future writes an extensive history of the comic, will repeat those same past mistakes.

Which brings to the whole point of this post. Sonic the Oz-Hog is an experimental monthly series reflecting on the comic's long history in Australia; how readily available they were, which issues were skipped, and its enduring survival while other books crashed and burned. Twelve notable issues have been selected, each representing a different month and year (so issue 82 would cover April 2000, 163 is August 2006 etc.). Four from each decade the comic was available, and with luck intended to be posted on their original publication dates. To sweeten the deal, one issue of Sonic Super Special, Sonic X, Sonic Universe, Super Special Magazine, and yes even Knuckles will round off this randomised roster.

This isn't an in-depth analytical overview of the comics or their cast. If that's what you seek, they've already been covered many times by many better blogs, some of which can be found on this site. Instead the intent is to provide a local experience from someone who lived it first-hand. Where Australia was at the time, what rocked (or flopped) popular culture, how Sonic as a franchise was felt by the public, online fan reactions, and the gradual self-destruction of the local comic industry. Then maybe a smattering of trivia about the stories.

We live in an ever-increasingly disposable society where the old phrase of "When it's out there on the Internet, it's out there forever" fades further into irrelevance. With luck, and assuming anyone out there cares for such stuff, this information once completed can remain accessible to the next generation of fans long after I'm dead and gone. Who knows? Maybe they'll have moved on from debating the events of Say You Will by then, but I doubt it. :P

I ran a John Cena vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi simulation, two out of three falls, extreme rules, and Cena won. It was probably the best of the ClashMania series I threw together. I got a few good spots where Tanahashi retreats to a corner to be like “what do I have to do to keep this guy down?” and two where Cena catches Mr. Tanahashi going for a High Fly Flow; one time he slammed Tanahashi and the next time his lifted him up to his shoulders to give him an Attitude Adjustment for the win. It was really cool to have those worlds collide, in those universes, and be so representational in January 2021. I’m having a hard time putting together another real experience like that with WWE 2K23 right now, as most of the NJPW guys I have downloaded from community creations don’t look as much like their guys as 2K19 community creations did. WWE 2K19 community creations were of a very professional quality, like spot on, and the offerings found in WWE 2K23 is very amateurish by comparison. I’m afraid I have to play another waiting game, to see what the community can do in years to come. I guess WWE 2K23 will be my wrestling simulator through to 2025 or something, that’s what I need from it with regards to community content, so I can write my own stories featuring the players from NJPW. I’m afraid the only place I can find NJPW represented in video games through license is in an offering from the Fire Pro series in 2019 I think, when NJPW was awesome hot still too. I think NJPW’s in a bit of a transitional period 2022 - 2024 as they have to find programs for returning young lions, deal with the fallout of a major faction split, deal with defections, fill spots left by exiles, and so on. Exciting, boring, surprising, wonderful times in NJPW right now as a fan. Putting together a full NJPW roster on my WWE 2K23 simulator may not be possible until late 2023 or early 2024. This would have to be a roster that has quality to their characters that the WWE 2K19 NJPW community creations roster I had assembled had. It’s kind of weird being in this place where I’m trying to make up my own game within a game, and I have some of the game, but have to either work to make up the other half, or wait six months to a year. So here I am. Navigating this complex web of interests and representations, lol. I can’t accurately project what NJPW would look like six months from now, as history is being made monthly!
