F. Scott Fitzgerald found dramatic inspiration in his life with wife Zelda Fitzgerald. His fourth and final novel, Tender is the Night, was based almost entirely on his relationship with Zelda. It tells the story of a psychiatrist who marries his own mentally ill patient, who just happens to be an heiress. They move to France together and live a life of excess, but his wife's illness eventually leads him to ruinous alcoholism and leaves his career in tatters.

Christina Ricci, the actress who stars in the Amazon biographical series Z: The Beginning of Everything and plays Zelda Fitzgerald, known for her beauty and high spirits - her husband said she was the first American flapper - but also her struggle with mental illness and alcoholism.

Ricci however says it's a common misconception about Zelda: "that she was this alcoholic crazy woman who ruined F. Scott Fitzgerald's life, and if not for her he would have had a great life." It's an idea that was popularized by Ernest Hemingway, but the actress says, "he was a huge misogynist." The truth, she claims, is much more complicated.

What Zelda loved in Scott Fitzgerald was that he recognized her talent for writing, and felt being his muse would lead to having her own career. But theirs was a dysfunctional marriage. It turned out that he wasn't comfortable with her achieving any success close to his. It was a very competitive relationship. And no matter what she tried to do, she was never allowed to be anything more than his wife, and that wasn't enough for her. And it ultimately led to a nervous breakdown.

Born in 1900 in Montgomery, Zelda was the heroine for many of Scott's novels. "The dominant influences on F. Scott Fitzgerald were aspiration, literature, Princeton, alcohol and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald," wrote Matthew J. Bruccoli in his book, A Brief Life of Fitzgerald.

A painter, ballet enthusiast and writer herself, Zelda published her first and only novel called 'Save me the Waltz' in 1932, which is said to have irked Scott, who cited similarities between the novel and his own unpublished work.

A critic described her prose as "brilliantly uneven; her flights are high and wild, and the form draws its strength from the enigmatic appeal of the fragment. Her descriptions are full of movement: often inanimate objects take on an overvivid and dangerous life. Flowers and food can turn disorienting or menacing in the blink of an eye, like when she wrote, 'those crawling flowers and venomous vindictive blossoms without organization or rhythm but with the power to sting and strangle...,' and love and horror mix themselves as well; she describes her beloved ballet teacher's brown eyes as 'like the purple bronze footpaths through an autumn beech wood where the mold is drenched with mist, and clear fresh lakes spurt up above your feet from the loam.'"

I know I've mentioned before about Pike and Scotty being latch key kids and having dealt with food insecurity in the past and whatnot and in the bit I'm editing Jim mentions that Scotty knows about Tarsus which did get me thinking about how that would have come up.

I think there is some strong evidence of Scotty having food related trauma in the films, in Beyond the first place he takes Jim when he asks for a tour of the Franklin is the mess hall. Even when we first meet Scotty there's a lot of implications going on.

Immediately he's going off about having to "live off protein nibs", when Spock Prime calls him by name he responds "Unless there's another hardworking, equally starved Starfleet officer around", and his reaction to finding out Spock is from the future is "That's brilliant! Are there still sandwiches in the future?".

Now this can be interpreted as the first time Scotty's done without, but I don't think it is. In part because of his reaction to Keenser saying that he's the equally starved Starfleet officer. "You can eat, like, a bean and you're done! I'm talking about food, real food."

To me, this is an indication that the protein nibs probably were enough for Keenser or at least more filling to him than to Scotty. Which brings me to Jim's conversation with Scotty.

The thing with Jim is he always going to try and level, he is always going to try to avoid isolating and cornering people. That's especially true when it comes to things that are similar to his own traumas. Even moreso because there is a stigma around food insecurity trauma.

I tend to think that Jim got together with Scotty and sat down to file a formal complaint about the time between food shipments to the outpost and the quantity and quality of said food along with the protein nibs situation. And it's in conversation about this that Jim let's him know why he's wanting to do all of this. He let's Scotty know about what he's been through to ease those feelings of isolation and to let him know he wasn't alone in these types of experiences, to validate that it was a thing to be upset about, it was a thing that was traumatizing to him. And that Jim understands and that he's never going to judge Scotty for having trauma responses about the subject. He tells Scotty that he and Len always have protein bars and the like on hand and helps him set up a few places around Engineering to stash snacks. And he goes out of his way to make Scotty as comfortable as he can be, because he knows what it's like when there isn't that support and he never wants anyone to face what he did in the aftermath of it all.

Scotty worked QUICKLY, hands gliding over the console. ( Truly the enterprise was a real BEAUTY. It was evident enough in her transporter capabilities alone. ) "I was hopping to catch ya!" Yes he was ambushing the captain, but sometimes that was the only way to get a quick word in.

"Now I know yer a busy man, but I was hoping ya might be able to help me with something sir.." It was the SMALLEST of white lies, but the captain had been looking a little WORSE for wear lately, and Scotty liked to think they were friends first. So maybe he had come up with a fake little problem that really would just be more of a way to get Jim to take a break and hang out with a friend for a few hours.

Zelda Fitzgerald

a flapper, a muse, an author, an icon in her own right; Zelda Fitzgerald is the prototype for the lunatic woman.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Zelda (Sayre) was known in her youth for her beauty and high spirits. From an early age she was rebellious, curious about art, intelligent. Zelda had a desire to challenge the norm.

In 1918 when Zelda was 18 she met F. Scott (22). The two began to write each other regularly and Zelda instantly became F. Scott's muse as he based many of his lady love interests after her.

In 1920, Zelda married author F. Scott Fitzgerald after the success of his debut novel This Side of Paradise. They were both launched to celebrity status.

The two were known for their antics and incessant partying. They would often get belligerently drunk and gallivant around what ever city they were in, causing as many public disturbances as possible along the way. The two spent money faster than they could make it, on lavish things. Their lives were like a swinging pendulum from poverty to opulent wealth.

But Zelda was an artist in her own right and it is said that her husband owed much of his success to her as well. She was dynamic, poetic, and savvy. She was skilled in writing, visual art, and dancing too. She used to let F. Scott read her diaries and it is rumored that he would copy long excerpts with out her permission and write them into his books-- never acknowledging her contribution. Zelda's real words left the mouths of many of F. Scott's fictional women, including Gatsby's Daisy and Tender is the Night's Nicole.

Of course, the charade did not last for long. After the publication of The Beautiful and the Damned, F. Scott asked Zelda to write a review for the paper, she wrote:

"It seems to me that on one page i recognized an old diary entry of mine which mysteriously disappeared shortly after my marriage and, also, scraps of letters which, though considerably edited, sound to me vaguely familiar. In fact, Mr. Fitzgerald seems to believe plagiarism begins at home."

Zelda and F. Scott's marriage began to deteriorate as Zelda began to garner attention of her own. They fought and raged often as publishers reached out to Zelda with writing deals of her own.

The couple moved to paris and as F. Scott tortured himself writing The Great Gatsby, Zelda's eye began to wonder toward a handsome pilot. As a result F. Scott locked Zelda inside their house and Zelda attempted suicide for the first time.

Ultimately, Zelda was institutionalized for her eccentric behavior and suicidal ideations, first in France, then later after her father's death in the states. She was diagnosed at the time with schizophrenia, then later, posthumously, diagnosed with bipolar disorder. While institutionalized Zelda published her first independent novel, Save Me the Waltz, a semi-autobiographical telling of her relationship with F. Scott. (The final publication was heavily edited by F. Scott's publisher, as it contained much of the same material he had planned to use for Tender is the Night.)

The novel was published with little success and ironically enough, F. Scott wrote his own scathing review of it where he called Zelda a third rate writer and a plagiarist. F. Scott died while Zelda was still hospitalized. After his death she began her second novel, Caesar's Things, but was unable to finish it after a fire broke out in a room where she was waiting to receive electroshock therapy.

McCoy

They stayed with Aporal for a few more minutes before convincing him to lie back down and rest more.

“I think ye’ve got yer first patient,” Scotty whispered when they were outside Aporal’s room and the door had closed.

McCoy let out a snort, but grinned. “Maybe,” he agreed slowly. “I think I said a long time ago that I’d get to put my hands on lots of handsome engineers.”

“Oh, ye think Aporal is handsome eh?” Scotty lifted an amused brow as he stopped to look at his husband.

“What? No! I- I- I mean—” he looked in surprise at Scotty who began to laugh.

“S’alright if ye think he is, love,” Scotty grinned. “As long as ye come home to me.”

McCoy sighed and shook his head, beginning to walk up the corridor again.

“He’s quite smart, very protective and a bit grumpy,” Scotty mused. “No, ye’re right. Ye two are too similar to make a good couple.”

McCoy stopped walking again and looked back at Scotty.

“What?”

“Ye’re welcome to look mo ghràdh, but ye two would nay make a good match of it. Ye best stick to me.”

“What are you on about?” McCoy asked with a confused look.

“Ye and Aporal. Ye’d never make a couple that would last.”

McCoy’s mouth opened but it took him a moment to find any words.

“Ye’re too much the same. So just look love, it’s fine,” Scotty said, still grinning.

“I don’t—! I wasn’t—! Can we just go home now?” McCoy shook his head in defeat. Sometimes his husband was just odd. But McCoy loved him anyway.

“Aye. Let’s go,” Scotty said, grabbing McCoy’s hand.

“Cadets!” a voice called them as they crossed the lobby. They turned to see the nurse looking at them. Her annoyance was still evident.

“Yes ma’am?” McCoy called back politely. They turned together and walked to the desk.

“Mr. Tallister wants you listed as his contacts,” she grumbled out. “I need your names and numbers.”

“Of course,” McCoy said in his most polite voice. “Leonard and Montgomery Scott-McCoy.”

“The prince?” the nurse asked as she looked up from her PADD.

“Yes ma’am,” he answered shortly.

“Well, doesn’t Mr. Tallister just have friends in high places,” she muttered under her breath.

McCoy exchanged a quick look with Scotty, before they both recited their comm numbers for the nurse.

“He may need someone to help him home later,” she warned them.

“We can be here,” Scotty said quickly, with a warm smile. She returned a smile back to him.

“Well, wasn’t my charm that won her over,” McCoy said with a laugh when they were outside the clinic. “She must have liked that sweet brogue.”

Scotty flushed next to him and McCoy gave his hand a squeeze.

“What should we do, Len?” Scotty asked, ignoring McCoy’s comment.

McCoy sighed. “I wish we could find a way to prove it was Francis, but if we do anything it might make it worse.”

A chirp came from McCoy’s pocket and he pulled out his comm.

“They can’t need us back already…,” Scotty said.

“No, it’s Leah. They got that interview set up for Tuesday afternoon, 1600.”

Another chirp. McCoy huffed.

“What?” Scotty asked.

“And Leah passed my number onto the reporter directly.” McCoy rolled his eyes. “She wants to know if we can meet her in the gardens.”

“I suppose she can’t ask anything too personal in a public setting like that,” Scotty said slowly.

McCoy shook his head. “I won’t let her ask anything too personal. We will set our boundaries very firmly.” He shoved the comm away and pulled Scotty close. “Come on. Let’s get a book and go find somewhere sunny to stretch out and read.”

Part 84

Scotty

They quickly grabbed a book and blanket from their room and then headed over to the small park that was in the middle of campus.

They really needed time to relax after the last day. First the incident with Sam and then the thing with Aporal... it had been quite stressful.

Leonard offered to read so that Scotty could just lie down and snuggle his head into his husband's chest. Even though the warm sun made him feel sleepy, the Scotsman tried his best to keep his eyes open. He didn't want to fall asleep. He wanted to be awake in case they received a call.

After what had to be thirty or fourty minutes, a voice called out their names, stopping Leonard in his reading.

Scotty raised his head and the couple sat up to see Christine walking over to them. She waved and the two of them waved back.

"Hey Chris," Leonard greeted their friend and patted the free space next to him, indicating for her to sit down which she quickly did.

"Hello lass."

"There you are! We missed you at breakfast," Christine said, obviously trying to keep her face from frowning. "Where were you?"

Scotty sighed and exchanged a glance with Leonard. Christine noticed that something was bothering her friends.

"Is it because of Jim and..." She carefully glanced at Leonard before looking back at Scotty who gave her a weak smile.

"Leonard knows. Ye can talk openly," he explained, "but nae. It wasn't because of Jim and Sam."

"Well, I suppose him and Spock just slept in late then. They weren't at breakfast either," Christine mused before asking her next question. "But what kept you two from breakfast if it wasn't Jim?"

Scotty bit his lower lip. They shouldn't just tell someone about what had happened to Aporal without his approval.

He wanted to say something, but was still very glad when Leonard beat him to it.

"We got up early today."

Christine narrowed her eyes suspiciously, but didn't say anything. She knew when she wasn't supposed to ask further questions.

"I see. I was just about to go to town and meet up with Roger. Do you wanna join us?"

Scotty shook his head.

"I'm sorry, Chris, but we have to stay close to campus."

At that, Christine raised one eyebrow.

"Okay? Not suspicious at all. But judging by the look on your faces I know that you can't talk about whatever secret you share."

Leonard shrugged his shoulders apologetically.

"Sorry."

"It's fine. We gotta get used to our friends knowing about stuff we don't. With various degrees of classified information in the fleet, it's gonna be a regular thing."

Aye. Christine was right about that. Who knew which rang they all would reach eventually?

"Well then... I gotta go now. See ya around!"

Christine gave them both a quick hug before she got up and continued her way to town.

Scotty and Leonard looked after her for a while before the latter chuckled softly. Scotty looked at him.

"What?"

"She really is a gorgeous girl," Leonard said and Scotty grinned.

"Wow, really? First Aporal and now Chris? Are ye trying to make me jealous?"

Leonard's face mirrored the grin as he grabbed Scotty by his collar, pulled him closer and pressed a kiss to his lips.

"Wouldn't dream of it, leannan. There's just... someone I know who seems to like our dear friend Christine," Leonard said mysteriously and Scotty tilted his head to one side.

"Oh? Tell me more."

But Leonard only shook his head and indicated that his lips were sealed.

"Information classified," he joked and Scotty sighed theatrically.

"Well... I guess I've gotta live with that."

It was about two hours later when Scotty got a call from the clinic and the two of them made their way over.

Aporal was already waiting in front of the building. He looked as grumpy as in the morning, but forced a weak smile onto his lips when he saw the two of them.

"I told them I could go alone, but they wouldn't let me," he explained and Scotty gently grabbed his arm.

"And they are damn right, laddie. We'll get ye to yer room."

Aporal sighed heavily but finally let Scotty and Leonard walk at both his sides.

The Andorian's dorm was next to the couple's. They took the elevator up and quickly stood in front of room 312.

"This one's mine," Aporal said and typed in the code to open the door. When the door opened, Scotty's eyes instantly started to move around the room.

It was a single room. There were a bed, a desk with a chair and a tall plant standing close to the window. It looked... kinda empty.

"A room just for yourself, huh?" Leonard asked as they headed inside and helped Aporal over to the bed.

He nodded.

"Yeah. The academy respected my wish for privacy."

Scotty could only imagine how horrible Aporal's nights had to be. He probably was still haunted by the events of his past. And he didn't want anyone to know about the nights he woke up panting and screaming.

"Do ye need anything?"

"Nah, I'm good," Aporal said as he lay down and rested his head on the pillow. He looked very tired.

"Thanks for helping me, Scottish boy. Prince. You can go now and do whatever it is couples do."

"Can we trust you to stay here and not go out to get revenge?" Leonard asked and Aporal chuckled humorlessly.

"Can't promise anything, but I'll try my best."

Scotty only shook his head. He really hoped that Aporal wouldn't try anything stupid.
