There’s one of these in Victoria, Australia that’s pretty famous for scalping trucks - the Montague Street Bridge.
Just found out that there’s a sight dedicated to how many days since a truck has tried (and failed) to drive underneath it.
The second funniest part is that the clearance is 3 meters.
The funniest part is that in 2016 the government added height-detection gantries on BOTH SIDES of the bridge to warn trucks about the height and give them time to bail and turn off the street.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most recent scalping as of today (22/10/2024) is FOUR DAYS AGO
was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out

Note
Have you heard about the Montague Street Bridge in Melbourne, Australia? It's got a low clearance of 3.0 meters, and has several checks in place for the many, many people that think their vehicle is below 3.0m in height, warning them that their truck is getting a freelance top surgery via the bridge's underpass.
It's even got a website tracking how many days since Montague Street Bridge has been hit, with records on the bridge's victims dating back to 2016. It last had a "bout" 48 days ago.

about the parallels between tad and peanut / romeo and juliet.
the first layer, the simplest and most immediate one- forbidden romance, rival factions.
like, neither of the two ever imagined what the other could ever mean to them until their streets really crossed and they met each other's real self and they knew, y'know.
speaking of eyes, we have met one key term. you might know that i'm completely obsessed with gazes, glances, eyes and so forth. i could attempt at doing a history of the concept of sight in literature, but i will just say: only know that in ancient greek the past form of the verb “see” is the same work used for “to know” (as in, “i saw, therefore i know”, not only with the physical eyes but especially the eyes of the soul. actually keep this in mind).
in shakespeare's play this is very important, since romeo understands that juliet sort of is his “soulmate”, so to speak, is when he looks her in the eye
sort of. unrelated but i beg you please read the ballroom scene it is one of the best pieces of poetry ever in modern literature it's so full of feelings and references and everything is so charged with meaning it consumes me daily
where i want to go with this is. that tad and peanut do antagonize each other, but when the occasion comes for them to see, therefore to know (see the note about the greek terms i mentioned before-i don't know how much shakespeare knew about ancient greek of course, but i do believe that the existence of the concept in itself must mean something about the collective mindset, ykwim?) each other's soul.
this allowing them to find in each other the mirror of so many of their insecurities and doubts and inadequacies and see all the mist that was holding them back dissolve. becuase then again they have soooo much in common alright, but they need to see it in each other to understand that they share so much ans find that connection.
and then there’s my favorite part, the one that made me fall in love with the play and made me reevaluate it completely from what i thought when i was a kid. to put it simply: love wins.
montagues and capulets are at each other's throats, rivals since generations to the point that they barely need a reason anymore. when romeo and juliet find each other, their connection literally jumps over that hatred, making them realize how senseless and harmful that was. when they die together, the two families come together in grief, finally erasing that line that kept them separate. i'm telling you, it's genuine love winning over the senseless hate, the violent ends to these violent delights that… end it, that's exactly it, allowing them to grow past that history of conflict.
now, of course greasers and preps have much more valid and complex reasons for their conflict, i don't think i need to specify that. but yet, in all their previous interactions tad and peanut have been marked by this hatred, not between individuals but between groups.
but when the moment we mentioned before comes, when they see each other, there's an understanding, a connection that leaps over that conflict, over their differences and the walls that nothing but the conditions they came to the world to put between them. they are unjust, and unfair, and rightfully one wonders why they should live each within these fences, why it is this hard to get out of them.
there's dangers, in following through with a relationship. there are obstacles and difficulties and it's like walking over a suspension bridge hanging on an abyss and armies at both sides. and yet, yet they decide to go on, to hang on tight to each other, just by virtue of that soul filling love and understanding that they find in each other, something so profound that becomes universal

Monty hungers....
Truck drivers in Michigan have for years smashed into an undersized bridge called The Big Penny. Normal warning signs have not deterred drivers from wedging dozens of trucks into its hungry maw.
So they put eyes and teeth on the bridge, in part as a further deterrent.

The 516 Unit (May make this a series)
UM. So...
I may have been digging around @asktrio516's old posts recently, and I discovered an old AU of hers...a Detective AU... and NOW I'VE WRITTEN SOMETHING FOR IT. With headcanons of my own for the characters she didn't mention in that post. EMMA I AM SO SORRY. (And I have another post lined up that involves her ocs... sigh. I am so sorry Emma.)
Anyways - DETECTIVE AU! Not much happens here, I want to save the action for later installments, this is mostly a slice of life depicting the actual relationships and dynamics of the unit.
Oh for quick reference - ages!
Thomas: 24 -Edward: 56 - Henry: 28 (don't ask why I make him and Hiro so young XD) - Gordon: 42 - James: 38 - Percy: 22 - Toby: 53 - Duck: 31 - Donnie and Douglas: 34 - Oliver: 32 - Emily: 27 - Rosie: 23 - Hiro: 30 (not all of them are here, but if I make this a series, then they will be)
Sodor. A small, lush green island off the coast of England, filled with beautiful valleys, towering mountains, and quaint classical towns. It's a vacation hotspot and a thriving business center.
This also means its' crime rate is massive. The local gang, nicknamed the "Diesels" because of their habit of leaving oil on each of the places or people they've robbed, hit all over the island on a regular basis. And that means a cop force has to be in place to stop them.
And luckily for Sodor, they've got some of the best in the UK: The 516 unit. These brave men and women head out into the streets on the daily, ready to kick ass, save the day, and risk their lives to be the heroes the island needs.
Unfortunately, most of them also happen to be idiots, as demonstrated by Detective Montague "Duck" Pannier, and his partner and cousin, Oliver Swindon.
"Oliver, that is disgusting and should not be allowed by God. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion you'll be struck down by him in the next thirty seconds."
Oliver sighed, continuing to stir honey into his mocha latte. The two detectives stood in the unit's walk-in kitchen, it was an ungodly hour of the morning, and frankly, he had neither the time nor the patience for his cousin's bullshit.
"Duck, frankly, I don't give a damn. You be boring over there with your tea and leave me alone."
The blond pinched the bridge of his nose. "There are two ways of doing things, Oliver. The Great Western Way-"
"And the wrong way, I know, I know. And from where I'm sitting..." Oliver cocked his eyebrow. "You're doing it the wrong way."
Before Duck could respond by cracking his mug over his cousin's head (it was his favorite whale mug), the bickering was interrupted by the stern voice of one Gordon Gresley - the 6'2 wall of lean muscle they called their unit chief. Always clad in a blue suit and a pipe in his mouth, his salt and pepper hair neatly brushed, no one tried to piss the chief off unless they had a death wish. Especially not this early in the morning.
"Gentlemen," he sighed.
Oliver snapped to attention, while Duck simply turned around and leaned against the counter, sipping from his mug unconcernedly. "Chief Gresley, sir! What can we do for you?"
"Stop blocking the fridge, for a start," he grumbled. "Don't keep a man from his breakfast."
Oliver scrambled out of the way, while Gordon yanked open their beaten-up fridge and pulled out a carton of vanilla yogurt and some milk. He firmly believed in the idea of keeping as much calcium in your body as possible. The last thing he needed was for his officers to get broken bones. Popping the lid off, he made the rare choice to make small talk - about work, of course.
"Have you seen any of the others so far today?" He asked his detective duo. "I haven't heard anyone come in besides you two."
Duck shrugged, gesturing out to the maze of cubicles behind the door his chief had just walked through. "I saw Edward head downstairs to the analog systems. No clue why he loves those old things so much. Haven't seen anyone else so far."
Oliver scratched his neck. "The twins should be here soon. Douglas is just picking Donald up."
"Oh, of course you know just where Douggie is," Duck teased, wiggling his eyebrows and dodging the fist aimed at his ear.
Sighing, Oliver continued. "And I think the rookies are on their way as well, sir."
"Eager kids," Gordon commented, gulping down some milk and putting the carton back. "They piss me off, but they'll be good. Eventually."
The rookies in question were Rosita "Rosie" Davenport, Thomas Awdry, and Percy Wickham. They were all recent graduates of the police academy and had been serving in the unit for only a few months respectively. Thomas and Percy in particular were described as the "little shit nuggets" by the Scottish Twins, and had issues with following orders. Rosie at least was good at listening and could be trusted to not do anything stupid... most of the time.
Duck finished his tea with a sigh and put the mug in the sink. "Well, I'm off to work on the Diseasel case. You coming, Oliver?"
"Gimme a minute, gotta finish the coffee."
"That coffee is an abomination."
"Duck, you son of a-"
"Stop, both of you," Gordon sighed. "God, why can't Edward be around right now..."
=================================
Contrary to what the movies and TV said, most of the police work was paperwork and not charging into warehouses and criminal gang hideouts, though there was still plenty of that involved. Instead, most members of the 516 unit, who had since filed into the office in varying stages of tiredness, sat at their desks, filling out reports, sorting old files, and trying their best to stay awake. That last part was having various levels of success.
Finally, one particular agent couldn't stand it any longer - the Latino ladies man James Hughes. Tall, with wavy black hair that had a couple red streaks in the front, and always in a red leisure suit with black undertones, he looked sexy and he knew it. He stood up, slammed his laptop shut, and shouted at the top of his lungs.
"If we don't get a new case in the next five minutes, I will jump out of the window after breaking it with Gordon's chair!"
"I think we'd all appreciate that, James," Oliver grumbled from his corner. "Jumping out the window, not breaking it and Gordon's chair."
"I don't give a fuck, I'm bored and I'm antsy! Give us a fucking case already!"
Thomas hopped to his feet as well. "I'm with James! Why is today so slow?"
Donald (or was it Douglas?) scoffed. "Ah, the action'll come latter for ye, laddie. Most days, bein a coppa's just this bullshit."
Douglas (or was it Donald?) nodded in agreement with his brother. "Aye. It ain't all shoot-outs and drug busts, lad."
And perfectly on cue, the sires went off, announcing the arrival of a new case. The loudspeakers came up with the voice of their PA, Emily Gallagher, giving them the update.
"Unit 516, I need at least two officers to respond to a 10-33 in Arlesburgh - it appears there has been another Diesel attack. Vandalism and larceny are the accused crimes."
"You were saying, gentlemen?" James cackled, already on his way out the door. "Yo, Thomas! You wanna get some action?"
"Hell yeah!" The younger man fist-pumped and followed him.
"Remember to call for-"
SLAM!
"Back-up..." Gordon finished, sighing heavily.
Just another day at the 516 unit.
======================
JESUS THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG. Once again, Emma, I am so sorry.
The AU and the designs in mind belong to @asktrio516, of course.

1973 Brooklyn Theme Song Gas Company 45RPM Vinyl
flickr
1973 Brooklyn Theme Song Gas Company 45RPM Vinyl by Vinnie DeVille Via Flickr: Vintage 45RPM vinyl record theme song, Brooklyn (performed by Wizz) from the 1973 Brooklyn Union Gas Company film - My, My, Brooklyn USA. Before it was National Grid, and before that KeySpan, the Brooklyn Union Gas Company was a large part of Brooklyn, New York, with a central headquarters on Montague Street in the heart of Downtown. I suppose this record, along with that classic film, was lost in the shuffle. Nice illustration of the Brooklyn Bridge on the cover sleeve. From a different time - indeed. It’s always a thrill when it’s from Vinnie DeVille!

All Fears Masquerade Under the Light
A breakdown of the song "Turn the Lights Off" by Tally Hall in relation to the Entities of The Magnus Archives universe. In other words, me scrambling to find connections between two vastly unrelated pieces of media that are currently holding my brain hostage.
At first, I thought the song was so fit for the the Spiral, but listening more closely made me realize it might be fit for all fears, actually.
Here are certain parts of the song that reminded me of the podcast. (Some of these are an absolute reach but come on, let me have my fun.)
The Title
Turn the Lights Off
The act of turning the lights off is literally how you summon the Darkness.
Verse 1
"Don’t go in there, you’ll become one"
This reminds me of how Jon was resisting the call of the Eye. I also think about the Coffin (the Buried) but I don't have a logical explanation for that one.
"Freaky creatures, monster party"
I'm pretty sure the Corruption is the very definition of freaky creatures.
"Eyes of yellow, scales and feathers, tails and tethers"
Fears based on animals? Sounds like the Hunt to me.
"Bend the nightmare, you control it"
AKA the Archivist after the Change.
Chorus
"Everybody likes to get taken for turns"
I think this can be interpreted as a sick way of describing the people suffering in each domain after the Change. Or it can also be the Avatars or Agents of the Entities enjoying the fear in some way.
"To see how bright the fire inside of us burns"
The Desolation, but more specifically, the Cult of the Lightless Flame (RIP Agnes Montague).
"And everybody wants to get evil tonight, but all good devils masquerade under the light"
How many avatars of the Entities are scattered all around the world? How many murderers do you walk past on the street? Also, it's giving The Stranger.
Verse 2
"Here’s the pinky, there’s the kinky"
I mean, if you think about it, the concept of enjoying fears IS kinda...
"Don’t remember what we look like"
The Spiral, the Stranger, and maybe the Corruption too.
"Tangled screaming (Light’s gone)"
The music of the world after The Change.
Verse 3
"Can’t they take it? Should be stronger"
Reminds me of the scrutiny that people fear under the Eye.
"Books abandoned,"
Jurgen Leitner's collection.
"breathe the water"
Could be the Vast or the Buried because it implies drowning.
"Mind distracted,"
The Spiral.
"sons and daughters out for slaughter"
The Slaughter, obviously, but can also be the Hunt.
Bridge
"Bet you’ve got a bone to pick with me"
The End manifests in bones, and the overall implication of the phrase is reminiscent of the Hunt (metaphorically) and the Flesh (literally).
"Seeps through the cumulus brume"
The Lonely manifests as fog.
"Tingles and tears while we’re gazing"
The Eye and its hunger for knowing. Jon and his feeding-the-Eye thing after the Change. It audibly tingles and he feels the fears of those people secondhand.
"Vanishes soon after bedtime for good"
Something vanishing for good is definitely a work of the End, and might also be of the Extinction.
Verse 4
"Don’t you like it? I know I do"
Sums up the experience of being an Avatar lol.
"How about you? What do we know?"
The Spiral, maybe a hint of the Stranger.
"Tiny patterns,"
The Web's almost invisible patterns of manipulation.
"hypnotizing"
The Spiral's usual deceitful activities.
Outro
"Dance in darkness, blow the nights off"
Basically, the events of the Unknowing.
"Walk the fire…"
Once again, RIP Agnes Montague.

In the year 2444, amidst the sprawling megalopolis of Neo-London, there existed an elite group of individuals known as the Aetheric Guard. They were the protectors of history, the stewards of time, wielding technology that could manipulate the very fabric of temporal reality. Among them was the formidable and enigmatic Commander Elara Stroud, a woman whose uniform was as distinctive as her reputation.
The Aetheric Guard was not merely a title; it was a legacy passed down through generations, founded by none other than the historic figure John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The earl, an inventor ahead of his time, had accidentally stumbled upon a temporal anomaly in the 18th century while researching the nature of electricity. His work laid the foundations for what would become the time manipulation technology wielded by the Guard.
Commander Stroud stood on the bridge of the Aetheric Vessel, "The Montagu," named in honor of the earl. Her eyes, sharp and focused, scanned the shimmering displays of temporal data and navigational charts. The vessel was on a critical mission, tracing the origins of a disruptive time ripple that threatened to unravel the events of the past two centuries.
The Guard had discovered that the ripple emanated from the 18th century, the very era of the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Elara knew the risks of temporal intervention, but the stakes were too high to ignore. They needed to ensure that history remained intact, that John Montagu would indeed invent the meal that revolutionized dining forever—the sandwich—ensuring his place in history and inadvertently setting the stage for the Aetheric Guard's creation.
Elara and her team materialized in a chamber that resembled the earl's study. The walls were lined with bookshelves, scientific instruments, and the aroma of roasted beef wafted in the air. At the center stood the earl himself, utterly oblivious to the presence of the time travelers.
The Aetheric Guard cloaked in invisibility, watched as the earl, deeply engrossed in his work and refusing to leave his desk for a proper meal, instructed his servant to bring him meat tucked between two slices of bread. The earl’s invention was a moment of simplicity, yet it held the weight of future centuries on its breaded shoulders.
However, before the earl could take his historic bite, the time ripple surged, threatening to erase the moment from history. Elara acted swiftly, deploying a device that stabilized the anomaly, her actions unseen but pivotal. The earl, none the wiser, took his bite, and history continued as it was meant to.
Back aboard The Montagu, Elara allowed herself a rare smile. The mission was a success, and her team had once again preserved the integrity of the timeline. They watched as the ripple corrected itself, ensuring that the legacy of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, and the Aetheric Guard, would live on.
The vessel phased out of the 18th century, its silhouette casting a transient shadow over the cobbled streets of old London, a phantom of the future ensuring the continuity of the past. And thus, the Aetheric Guard continued their vigil, guardians of history, one sandwich at a time.

Working on Exercise #3 and Book Covers or Research Presentation Assignments
**
Chip Kidd at AGI Open London 2013
The video talked about Chip Kidd - a designer and writer. During the video, Kidd shared his experiences creating the Batman cover series and his thoughts on making a book cover. He said the book cover is based on a book-by-book basis, depending on the book, author, and everything the book wants to convey. Besides, a book cover is a piece to serve another piece of art. It can make people notice the book. It is interested in visual identity through a piece of writing.
Based on what he shared, I have some definitions of the importance of making book covers toward a book. First, it creates visual art for a book and makes readers notice and be interested in the content of the book. The book cover bridges the author and the reader, making it essential to publish a book.

Research for book cover
When researching the assignment, my professor introduced me to Julian Montague - a graphic designer who works specifically in making book covers. I have many inspirations come up after researching him and his works. I came up with several ideas. In the assignment, I want to make something related to my hometown, so I planned to do about "Chò Nâu" - a plant that people can see around the street in my hometown. Moreover, I have many memories of these plants. So I tried to sketch out whether it would work or not.
