if i were to ever pursue writing as a hobby or a profession, i hope i can be as good as ai yazawa and produce a masterpiece like NANA
#the reason why i dont really care for shounen anime that much anymore is bc its mainly about the plot and powerups#which makes the characters feel flat to me#even the more âdevelopedâ characters#whereas nana on the surface level has a very simple plot#but the characters are so complicated and feel like real ppl#like its not black and white where you got the heroes and the villians with the occasional anti hero#and nana does a really good job with showing the characters messing up and dealing with the consequences#i also really like how its shown that some characters are still not happy despite accomplishing their dreams#ugh i just love nana so much#hands down one of the best anime i watched along with monster#if i were to ever write out my celebs au i hope i can write it as good and compelling#also been thinking about placing the characters from my celebs au into a college au but thats another story lol#tl;dr character driven stories > plot driven stories for me#at least for the most part

Neue Femur is a super precious and adorable baby and if anything ever happened to her I will kill everyone in the underground and then myself.

â
Itâs late at night and youâre sitting in bed, reading a book before you go to sleep. Or at least, youâre trying to, but you keep peeking over the side of the bed, hoping your tentacle monster will come visit you again tonight. After a while, with no sign of your guest from last night, your eyes grow heavy and you drift off to sleep. The light is still on and your book is sitting open on your stomach as you lay sprawled across your mattress, dreaming about tentacles wrapping you up.
Youâre snoring softly when, suddenly, you jolt awake to the feeling of something cool and silky caressing your cheek. Quickly sitting up in bed, you blink open your eyes to find an inky black tentacle stroking your face. With a wide smile, you reach out a hand and stroke your fingers along its length, marveling at how nice the texture feels. When the tentacle begins tickling your ear, you squirm out of reach, giggling and gently batting it away. Wiggling in place, almost as if itâs laughing, the tentacle retreats back under the bed.
A moment later, it reappears again with its tip wrapped around an object. This time, you reach out your hand, eager to see what it has for you. When it uncurls itself, a small stone drops into your hand. Grinning at the new gift, you hold it up to the light and marvel at the gorgeous gray surface thatâs veined with bright streaks of white. After youâve finished inspecting the stone, you place it on your nightstand along with the pearl and necklace pendant. Leaning in, you place a soft kiss on the tip of the tentacle and then laugh when it wiggles again.
Remembering what you found up earlier today, you hop off the bed and hurry over to your backpack, calling over your shoulder, âI have something for you too!â
After rummaging around for a minute, you find what youâre looking for and walk back over to your bed where the tentacle is still patiently waiting. Extending your hand, you watch as it carefully picks up the piece of dark green sea glass, its edges worn smooth. Another tentacle appears as it gently rolls the piece of glass between the two tips, caressing the surface, as if inspecting it.
Youâre chewing your bottom lip, hoping it likes your gift, when suddenly the tentacles wiggle again as several more shoot up from under the bed and wrap you up in a giant hug. Laughing, you squeeze back, happy that it seems to like your gift.Â
As the tentacles slither along your skin, youâre reminded of the night before when it had you pinned to the bed. Your cheeks grow flushed with the memory and you wonder how you can make that happen. As if it can sense where your thoughts are headed, the tentacles begin to deliberately rub along your nipples, which are already hardening under your shirt. Letting out a soft moan, you relax into the monsterâs hold, hoping it will get the hint.
It clearly understands what you want because a few tentacles grip your shirt and begin pulling it over your head as others work your shorts down your hips. Once youâre completely naked, the tentacles take a moment to slither along your bare skin, as if enjoying the feel of you just as much as you do.Â
Then, one of the tentacles wraps around both your wrists, tugging you forward so youâre on your knees. Another one wraps around your waist, pulling backwards as the first one continues to pull your arms down to the bed. Soon youâre fully bent over with your ass up in the air and your wrists bound and stretched out over your head on the mattress. Next, two more tentacles wrap around each of your thighs, pulling them apart so that your pussy is completely exposed.
A shiver runs through you, not from the cold, but from anticipation for what the monster will do to you. Fortunately, it doesnât make you wait long. One tentacle reaches up to play with your clit, alternating between flicking the bud and pulling at it with one of its suction cups. You moan at the sensations, trying to wiggle your hips for more but youâre completely bound, unable to move anywhere.
Two tentacles reach up and suction themselves to each of your nipples, pulling down so thereâs a delicious tug on your breasts. The weight of the tentacles and your heavy breathing causes them to sway beneath you and you mewl in pleasure. As the other tentacle continues to play with your clit, wetness drips from your soaking pussy. Another one slides up along your leg gathering up your juices and plunges inside you, causing you to gasp at the sudden intrusion.
As the tentacle pushes deeper inside you, stretching your walls as far as theyâll go, the small bite of pain adds a delicious zing of pleasure to the already overwhelming sensations. When itâs completely filled you up, it pauses, letting you adjust for a moment. Once it senses you beginning to relax, it slowly pulls back out, almost to the tip, and then plunges all the way in again. Pulling out and shoving back in, it sets a rapid pace, the wet squelching sounds mixing with the cries of pleasure pouring from your lips.
As the monster continues to fuck you senselessly, you begin to feel an orgasm building. But just as your walls start to clamp down on the tentacle, it abruptly pulls out, simultaneously pausing its ministrations on your clit, and you cry out in despair. After a moment, it resumes teasing and fucking you, only to pause once again when your orgasm is almost at its peak. It does this over and over again, bringing you right to the brink and then pulling back until youâre a whining, needy mess.
Tears of frustration begin to build in your eyes and you think youâve almost had enough when, instead of pushing back into your pussy, the soaking wet tentacle moves higher, up to your ass. You suck in a breath as it tickles the outer rim, teasing and flicking the puckered skin. Youâve never had anything there and youâre a little afraid it will hurt, but at the same time you trust this monster with your body and want to see what it will do.
Pressing the tip gently in, the tentacle pushes past the first ring of muscles and you groan at the new sensation. Slowly, it works its way further and further in, pausing every few inches to let you adjust to the new girth. When it reaches as far as it seems to be able to go, it pulls back out and then pushes in again. This time, it fucks you more slowly than before and you melt into the mattress, getting lost in the sensation.Â
Youâve forgotten your earlier frustrations, too distracted by the tentacle filling your ass, until you feel a different tentacle begin to push its way into your pussy. Gasping, you try to wiggle away â thereâs no way it can fit two at the same time, right? But of course, thereâs nowhere for you to go and it continues to ease the second tentacle into your cunt while the first one keeps slowly fucking in and out of your ass.
Before long, both tentacles are completely filling you up, stuffing you to the brim, and youâre almost delirious with the overwhelming fullness. They begin to move in tandem, plunging in and out of both your holes as you whimper and cry out with each thrust. Itâs almost too much, but at the same time youâve never felt anything more amazing and you never want it to end.Â
This time, when your thighs begin to tremble and your walls start to clamp down with your impending orgasm, the monster doesnât stop. Instead, it resumes playing with your clit and you immediately explode. Stars burst behind your eyes as your entire body seizes up, white hot pleasure coursing through you. It feels like the orgasm goes on forever as you get lost in a hazy bliss and time ceases to exist.
Eventually, though, awareness begins to return as you start to come down from the high and you sag into the mattress, boneless and spent. Carefully, the monster eases out of you and releases its hold on your body. Youâre almost sad at the loss of contact. But then it gently maneuvers you so that your head is resting on the pillow and pulls the blanket over you, tucking you in around the edges. As the tentacles start to retreat back under the bed, you reach out and snag one of them, holding onto it.Â
âWill you stay until I fall asleep?â You ask in a drowsy voice.
You feel it hesitate for a moment but then the tentacle winds up your wrist, grasping onto you. Smiling, you settle back into the pillow and begin to drift off. Before youâre fully asleep, you manage to mumble, âWill you come back again tomorrow night?â
Thereâs a beat of silence, and then, right as your awareness slips away, you hear an inhumanly deep, multilayered voice echo in your mind, âYes, little creature.â
ââââââââââââââââââ
The monster is immensely pleased with this female it has chosen to mate.
At first, it wasnât sure if the gifts left on various surfaces of her den were meant for it. But it took them anyways, wanting to indulge in the fantasy. Most creatures run screaming when they see the monster for the first time. Some even attack without warning.Â
But not this one. To the monsterâs delight, this delectable female was only startled at first. And when it tried to offer her gifts to soothe her fear, she eagerly accepted them!Â
She even accepted its attempts to couple and let it touch her.Â
Feel her.Â
Taste her.Â
She is utterly delicious.
And when she presented it with a mating gift of her own tonight, it knew for sure that she had accepted its offer.
As the monster settles into the darkness beneath where she sleeps, grasping her tiny delicate hand, it hopes that it can make her happy enough that sheâll never want to leave. Because even if she does, it will never let her go.

So, full disclosure, I haven't been a Solas fan before.
I am now.
And that's because of Veilguard and the many, many ways in which I felt let down by this game.
The aspect that bothers me most is the reduction of nuance and complexity.
Rook's hero's cakewalk (because âjourneyâ really isn't the right word) is a ready-made path that offers no deviation at all and never challenges the player in any meaningful way.
Sure, you can spend some time pondering the pros and cons of saving Treviso or Minrathous. Ultimately, it makes no difference. Rook does their best, they just canât be in two places at once.
Same with the companion character arcs. What does it mean if you decide to you turn Emmrich into a lich? For the most part, it's idle musing. Indulgence. Heâll be happy either way, there are no real stakes. Yeah, your actions do have consequences, just not the sort of consequences that make a substantial difference. Itâs the illusion of choice â reduced to cosmetics.
The problems with decisions that cost nothing is that they donât feel like an accomplishment. They also donât allow for character growth. Rook doesnât change, they remain static. Even the section in the Fade where Rooks faces their regrets is easy and comparatively lightweight. Varric was killed by Solas, Harding resp. Davrin died in combat and either Bellara or Neve was abducted by Elgarânan. Itâs not like Rookâs decisions actually caused these events, itâs not like Rook actually failed through a choice they had to make that turned out to be the wrong one. Everyone was there willingly and volunteered to fight the good fight. Rookâs regrets are not about real guilt, they are about feeling sad and guilty. And that â it needs to be said â is not the same thing. At all.
At the same time, the story carefully avoids any kind of true ethical dilemma.
It's not even about the lack of mean or edgy dialogue options; thatâs just a symptom. The cause is the writersâ unwillingness to let realism intrude in Rookâs fairytale â the lack of anything that would require Rook to compromise on morals, or fight temptation. Rook is never faced with any sort of moral conundrum, or allowed to act out any kind of vice that realistic characters have. In its straight-path simplicity, Rook's story is apparently written for children and people who remain child-like in their yearning for simple, uncontested truths.
Of all the sorts of conflicts that a story can offer, Veilguard carefully avoids the most realistic and (in my opinion) interesting ones: Character vs. self and character vs. society, aka, politics. The game firmly refuses to go there. To the point where it creates a completely unrealistic consensus on all sides that eliminates yet another sort of conflict: character vs. character.
If Rook and their companions would talk politics, theyâd all be on the exact same side. In a two party state, theyâd all cast the same vote.
I am sure that there are many players who feel comforted and reassured by that fact, who sincerely believe that this is how stories should be written. That stories should reflect the world not as it is but as they think it should be. But for everyone who likes their stories a little more realistic, that lack of meaningful interpersonal conflict, that lack of real diversity which comes not from appearance but from different cultures and opposing viewpoints amounts to a frankly cringe-worthy, artificial and juvenile surface-level interaction between characters. Or, to phrase it differently: the diversity remains skin-deep and doesnât extend to the philosophical, and even in the few instances where it does, it shies away from the political.
Which means that the only conflicts that remain are the most boring and stereotypical ones: character vs. monsters resp. the supernatural, where all foes are evil in the blandest way (Supremacist Venatori! Fascist renegade qunari! Power-hungry necromancers!). These conflicts are resolved through exploring maps and endless, repetitive combat.
The only thing that brings a bit of nuance to the game is Solasâs story. And there is an element of character vs. character in Rookâs and Solasâs relationship, but the sad truth is that what could have been a fascinating mirrored character journey falls flat for all the reasons already explained â because where Solas is a character as layered and controversial as it gets, Rook is anything but.
Solasâs story shows how even people with the best intentions and the greatest integrity are ultimately broken by what life throws at them, both by the decisions that are forced upon them and the choices they make on their own. It shows how a prolonged war is always a sunk cost fallacy: Iâve gone this far, if I stop now, it was all for nothing.
Rookâs victories, on the other hand, come without a cost â both in terms of moral corruption and in accountability. The guilt Solas bears is real. The fight against the titans, followed by his war against the Evanuris, requires compromising his own morals, one day at a time, one century after another, heâs trying to save the world yet doomed to fail. Sacrificing the spirits to win a battle after the war has gone this far? Every single war leader around the globe would make the same decision. In fact, all of them do: They do sacrifice the lives of others if it will help them win, they do send soldies into the trenches to die, whether these soldiers want to or not, and they are rarely, if ever, truthful about the reasons why.
In a certain way, the story of the spirit of wisdom turned flesh is reminiscent of the biblical Fall of Man: the original sin. Solas has fallen, and heâs broken. In trying to heal the world, heâs trying to heal himself. The burden is too heavy, the responsibility to great, the knowledge that he is responsible for all of it too devastating. Solasâs greatest conflict is character vs. self. It has the potential to be great. In a way, it is. Itâs the single redeeming quality that, depending on your interpretation of what went on behind the scenes, the writers managed to salvage from the original concept of Dreadwolf or the lone pillar that withstood all their attempts to bring it down.
Only sadly, infuriatingly, in the end, that fallen heroâs ending is put into the hands of a protagonist who judges him from the perspective of someone who has never even stumbled â not because they are wiser, braver, or kinder. No, just because the writers were gracious â or cowardly? â enough to never let them fail.
The game gives Rook a moral high ground which isnât earned in the slightest because Rook never had to walk even a quarter of a mile in Solasâs shoes. They donât know what they would have done in his stead, they have no idea what it actually means to see the sorry shape the world is in and know that it was your hands that shaped it. And even where Rook might actually be culpable â the interruption of Solasâs ritual that freed the remaining Evanuris â anyone is quick to assure Rook that it wasnât their fault.
Whatever regrets Rook carries, theyâre born from self-doubt and trauma response. Survivorâs guilt, mostly. When compared to Solasâs immense guilt, Rookâs regrets are, for lack of a better term, insignificant. That Rook manages to face them doesnât mean that they are more truthful or emotionally mature, it just means that Rookâs story is a tale for children and Solasâs is not.
Itâs not that Iâm necessarily opposed to the idea that the player decides Solasâs fate through their actions. Itâs the injustice of it all that bothers me: The player is led through a game that provides a safe space for their character, one that is devoid of any interpersonal conflict and any ethical quandary. Rooks succeeds through kindness and heroism and taking their companions on team bonding exercises.
As if Solas could have won the war against the Evanuris if heâd taken the time to take his companions on coffee dates.
The juxtaposition â Rook vs. Solas â fails, simply because of this deep divide. Rookâs story is detached from reality and yet Rook gets to be Solasâs judge, jury, and executioner. On what grounds?
As I said, right in the beginning, I havenât been a Solas fan before. But by the end of Veilguard, I was firmly, irrevocably, Team Solas, just because I was so annoyed that the narrative put Rook in a position of moral superiority. I detested my own character. Jesus, what a goody two-shoes! I was rooting for Solas simply because his story was so much more: a genuine tragedy, a study in complexity. Rook, on the other hand, remains bland, snotty, unchanged. Untried.
The thing is, I donât believe that my reaction was one the writers had intended. I strongly feel that they didnât mean for me to pick up on their double standard, that they expected me to walk away fully satisfied, convinced that Rook and The Team were the Good Guys because they went on picnics and petted the griffon, their final victory well-earned and just. If only Solas had had a Team and taken care of their emotional needs â he could have taken down the Evanuris with nary a scratch!
Itâs all so very disingenuous.
Rook and, by extension, the player exist in a bubble of sanitized content. That is clearly deliberate. The player is meant to like it there. (In that sense, itâs only logical that they changed the title from Dreadwolf to Veilguard.) And clearly, it does resonate with a certain kind of their player base: mostly with people, I think, who would like their real life to be a bubble too and whose only experience with moral corruption is when they find it in others.

'Silent Strain' | part I
Outbreak!Joel Miller x f!reader
next chapter
summary: Joel and you knew that bringing a child into this mad world was a mistake, but he wanted to give you the best that was left of that world after all.
w.c: 12,6k (this was 5k at the beginning)
warnings: established relationship, age gap (Joel is 43 and Reader 32) angst, mentions of pregnancy, mentions of abortion, fluff, not proofreading, sorry. The events of this story happen 10 years after the outbreak.
a/n: New Sunday, new fic? This one was on my drafts and I thought about developing a little bit more because I wanted to write one where Joel wasn't an asshole. This may become a really short series. Reblogs and comments are always appreciated. Happy reading.
dividers by @/saradika-graphics
Mornings in the QZ were far from a story teller, always bleak as any other, somber and carrying the weight of the guilty grieving each people who has survived this far dealt with.
Many people had become the worst versions of themselves, just monsters they never thought they would be. Others woke up with the survivorâs guilt, after years of letting go their people, family and friends.
And others carried all that, but had found a little spark shinning on their path.
That was your case.
And Joelâs too.
You both had found each other just a few years after the world descended into chaos. After that, you become each otherâs anchor until now.
Even when days seemed to be grayer, even when Joel seemed a bit lost after losing his contact with Tommy.
Even on days when the world seemed grayer, even when Joel seemed a little more distantâhis thoughts lost somewhere along the frayed edges of his mind, burdened by the loss of contact with Tommyâyou held on. You knew what he was feeling; it was a familiar ache, a common wound you both carried.
Tommy was Joelâs last person who shared his blood. His brother, his last piece of family and what the old world had left him.
But he also had you, and that made him alive.
You woke up slowly, the thin, rough blanket tangled around your legs, the mattress beneath you creaking as you shifted. The air was cold, seeping through the cracks in the walls, and the faint light of dawn barely penetrated the small, grimy window. Outside, you could hear the sounds of the QZ waking up, the distant, muffled voices of guards changing shifts, the echo of boots on concrete, and the occasional shout. You pulled the blanket tighter around you, trying to keep the chill at bay.
The room you and Joel shared was small, barely large enough for the bed and a rickety chair in the corner. Outside the doors, there was the rest of the old apartment that worked as a roof for the both of you, and Tess.
The walls were stained with years of neglect, paint peeling in long strips, revealing the bare concrete beneath. There was a small table near the window where a lone candle had burned down to a stub, wax pooling on the surface, solidifying in random patterns. It had been another long, sleepless night, the dark hours stretching on endlessly, and you could feel it in your bones, an ache that went deeper than simple tiredness.
You glanced over at Joel, still asleep beside you, his face etched with lines of worry even in rest. He lay on his side, one arm slung over his face, his brow furrowed as if he were fighting off some invisible enemy in his dreams. The mornings were hardest on him, you knew. Waking up to the same bleak reality day after day, the hope of finding Tommy growing thinner with each passing moment.
A wave of nausea hit you unexpectedly, a sudden queasiness that made your stomach twist. You shut your eyes, taking a slow, deep breath, trying to steady yourself. You hadn't been feeling well for a few days now, just a lingering discomfort you chalked up to the lack of proper food or maybe stress. Nothing in this world was kind to the body or the mind anymore.
You pushed yourself up, careful not to wake Joel, and swung your legs over the side of the bed, your feet touching the cold, cracked floor. The chill ran up your legs, making you shiver. You sat there for a moment, steadying yourself, pressing a hand against your stomach as if trying to calm the unease that rolled there. There was a strange heaviness to it, something that seemed different, something you couldnât quite put your finger on.
The thought crossed your mind, quick and unbidden, a possibility you immediately pushed away. It was too absurd, too impossible to consider. Not here, not now, not in this broken world.
You rose to your feet, steadying yourself on the edge of the table, your fingers brushing against the melted wax. You glanced back at Joel, who still hadnât stirred, his breathing deep and even. You knew he needed the sleep, needed a moment of peace, however fleeting. You moved quietly toward the window, peering out through the dirt-streaked glass. The world outside was shrouded in mist, the familiar shapes of the crumbling buildings barely visible in the pale morning light.
There was a time when you might have found the sight beautiful, in a melancholic way. Now it just seemed desolate. Empty.
Another wave of nausea hit, stronger this time, and you pressed a hand to your mouth, swallowing hard. You took a few deep breaths, trying to steady yourself. You felt a sharp pang of fear, a sudden flash of panic that cut through the fog of morning fatigue. You forced it down, tried to stay calm. You couldnât afford to be anything else.
From behind you, you heard the faint rustle of the bed as Joel shifted, his voice rough and low. âYou, okay?â he murmured, still half-asleep, his words slurred with exhaustion.
You turned to look at him, forcing a smile, though you werenât sure he could see it in the dim light. âYeah⌠just a bit cold,â you lied softly, your voice barely more than a whisper.
He blinked at you, eyes heavy-lidded, and then nodded, seeming to accept it. âCome back to bed,â he mumbled, his voice carrying a warmth that made something in your chest tighten. âItâs still early.â
For a moment, you hesitated, feeling the cold air around you, the uncertainty pressing in. But then you moved back to the bed, sliding in beside him, feeling the heat of his body radiating through the thin layers of fabric. He reached out, pulling you close, his arm draping over you protectively, and you let out a breath you didnât realize youâd been holding.
You closed your eyes, savoring the feeling of safety as Joel stirred Joel stirred, his hand rubbing small, soothing circles on your back. âAre you sure you are, okay?â he murmured, his voice rough with sleep.
âYeah,â you whispered, hoping he couldnât hear the lie in your voice. âJust a headache.â
He kissed the top of your head, the simple gesture sending a pang of guilt through you. âYouâve been getting a lot of those lately,â he noted, concern creeping into his tone.
You forced a smile, even though he couldnât see it. âJust stress, I think.â
He hummed in response, not entirely convinced but willing to let it go for now. He gently nudged you off his chest, propping himself up on one elbow to get a better look at you. His eyes searched your face, and you had to fight the urge to look away. Joel had a way of seeing right through you, and you were afraid he might catch a glimpse of the truth you were hiding.
He frowned, clearly not convinced. âYouâve been sayingâ that a lot lately. Maybe you should rest today, stay in bed.â
You shook your head, knowing you couldnât afford to take a day off. Life in the QZ was unforgiving, and everyone had to pull their weight. âIâll be fine. Weâve got too much to do, and theyâre already short-handed at the ration line.â
You forced yourself to follow suit, pushing through the lingering nausea as you pulled on your worn clothes. The headache throbbed with each movement, but you bit back the discomfort, determined not to let it show. Joel kept glancing over at you, as if expecting you to collapse at any moment, but you just offered him a reassuring smile, even if it didnât reach your eyes.
Once you were both ready, you stepped out into the harsh reality of the QZ. The streets were crowded, people moving about with a sense of urgency, always on edge. You and Joel made your way through the throng, his hand resting on the small of your back, guiding you through the chaos.
At the ration line, the day passed in a blur of monotonous tasksâdistributing food, managing the restless crowd, keeping an eye out for trouble. But the ache in your head never fully faded, and every now and then, you had to pause, closing your eyes for a moment to steady yourself.
Joel noticed, of course. He was always watching, always worrying, though he tried to hide it behind a gruff exterior. âYou sure youâre alright?â he asked again when you took a brief break, his tone betraying his concern.
âYeah, just⌠Itâs probably just the air or something,â you said, shrugging it off. But you could tell he didnât believe you.
âSee you later, then?â he asked before parting ways with you to your different duties.
âYeah, see you later,â you replied, forcing a smile, trying to reassure him. Joel lingered for a moment, his eyes searching yours, he planted a kiss on your lips before turning to head off to his assigned area. You watched him go, feeling a mix of guilt and relief. You hated lying to him, but what could you say? That the world seemed to be spinning just a little bit too fast? That every time you bent over, a wave of nausea washed over you? It would only make him worry more.
The hours dragged on, the sun creeping across the sky, bringing with it a sticky heat that clung to your skin. By midday, your headache had grown worse, a steady throb that pounded behind your eyes. The noise of the crowd seemed to amplify the pain, voices blending into a harsh cacophony. You rubbed at your temples, willing it to stop, but it only seemed to make it worse.
At one point, while lifting another crate filled with canned goods, a sharp pain shot through your abdomen, causing you to drop the box with a loud thud. A few people nearby turned to look, but you waved them off, trying to catch your breath. The soldier supervising the line glanced over, raising an eyebrow. âYou good there?â he asked, his tone half-concerned, half-annoyed.
âYeah, Iâm fine,â you muttered, bending down to retrieve the cans that had spilled onto the ground. Your hands shook slightly, and you felt a bead of sweat roll down your back. The soldier didnât look convinced, but he didnât press further, turning his attention back to the line.
âThen clean the mess you madeâ he ordered.
You nodded, swallowing down the nausea that threatened to rise again. âYes, sir,â you replied, bending down to pick up the cans. Your fingers felt clumsy, and every time you moved, the pain in your abdomen seemed to sharpen, making it difficult to keep your breathing steady. Sweat dripped from your forehead, stinging your eyes, but you pushed through, determined not to draw any more attention to yourself.
As you gathered the last can, another wave of dizziness hit you, and you had to steady yourself against the crate to keep from toppling over. You glanced over your shoulder to see if the soldier was still watching, but he had already turned away, his focus elsewhere.
You took a deep breath, trying to will away the nausea, when you heard a familiar voice behind you. âHey, you, okay?â
Turning, you saw Tess standing there, her face set in a concerned frown. âYeah,â you lied, forcing a weak smile. âJust a rough day.â
Tess studied you for a moment, her eyes narrowing. âYou donât look so good,â she said quietly, stepping closer. âYouâre pale⌠and sweating like hell.â
You shrugged, trying to brush it off. âIâm fine, just⌠tired, I guess.â
Tess didn't seem convinced. Her sharp eyes swept over you, taking in every detail â the paleness of your skin, the way your hands trembled slightly as you held the cans. Her frown deepened, and you could practically feel the gears turning in her head.
âLook,â she said slowly, almost carefully, âI know you well enough to tell when youâre lying. And right now, youâre doing a pretty damn poor job of hiding whatever this is.â
Your heart started to pound in your chest, an uneasy thump that only made the nausea worse. You swallowed, glancing away from her probing stare. âI said Iâm fine, Tess,â you repeated, but your voice came out too shaky, too uncertain. Even you didnât believe it.
She took a step closer, lowering her voice. âDonât bullshit me,â she murmured, her tone firm but not unkind. âYouâve been off for days now⌠the headaches, the dizziness. Iâve seen this before. And Iâm pretty sure you know what Iâm talking about.â
You stiffened, shaking your head quickly. âNo, Tess,â you whispered, almost desperate. âItâs not that⌠it canât be.â
Tessâs expression softened, but there was still a hint of stubbornness there, a determination to get through to you. âListen,â she began, her voice a little gentler. âIâm not trying to scare you, but⌠you need to face this. If itâs what I think it is⌠then youâve got a lot to figure out.â
âPlease, Tess. Not nowâ you pleaded.
Tess hesitated, her eyes searching your face, but she nodded slowly, relenting â at least for the moment. "Alright," she said quietly, though the concern in her voice hadnât faded. "But you canât keep running from this forever."
You felt a lump in your throat as you looked away, blinking back the tears that threatened to spill. "I just⌠I canât think about it right now," you murmured, your voice barely above a whisper. "Thereâs too much going on, and⌠JoelâŚ"
Tess sighed, crossing her arms. "I get it," she replied softly. "But, you know, youâre not alone in this. Whatever it is, youâve got people who care about you. Joel might be rough around the edges, but⌠heâs not going to turn his back on you. Not now, not ever."
You swallowed hard, nodding, though you still felt like you were balancing on a knifeâs edge. "I know," you said, though doubt still gnawed at you. "Itâs justâŚ"
"Itâs scary," Tess finished for you, and you could only nod again, feeling suddenly very small. "But you donât have to go through it alone, alright?" she added, her voice softening. "Iâve got your back. Always."
You gave her a weak smile, grateful for her support, even if the fear still twisted inside you. "Thanks, Tess," you whispered.
She patted your shoulder, her touch gentle, almost sisterly. "Letâs get back to it," she said, glancing back toward the line. "But promise me⌠youâll think about what I said."
You nodded again, though your mind was spinning with a hundred different thoughts. "I promise," you murmured, even though you weren't sure if you meant it.
By the time you got back to the apartment, the sun was already low in the sky, casting long shadows through the broken blinds. Your legs felt heavy, your head still pounding from the stress of the day. As you pushed open the door, you were met with the stale, familiar scent of the small, dimly lit space that you and Joel called home. The silence was almost deafening, broken only by the faint creaking of the floorboards beneath your feet.
Your eyes scanned the room, and they quickly fell on Joel sprawled out on the bed, his face slack in sleep. But what caught your attention was the nearly empty bottle of whiskey sitting on the table next to him, beside a few scattered, white pills. A flare of anger ignited in your chest.
You walked over and grabbed the bottle, knocking it down onto the floor. The sound of the glass hitting the wood was loud, but Joel didnât stir. Frustration bubbled up inside you. âJoel,â you called out sharply, but he remained still, lost in whatever numbness heâd sought.
With a forceful shove, you shook his shoulder, your voice rising. âJoel, wake up!â you demanded. His eyes fluttered open slowly, bleary and unfocused. He blinked a few times, trying to clear his vision, and groaned.
âWhat?â he muttered, his voice thick with sleep and whatever haze the whiskey and pills had put him under.
Your hands clenched into fists at your sides. âWhat the hell, Joel?â you spat out, your voice trembling with a mix of anger and worry. âYouâre drinking and taking pills again? You promised me⌠you promised youâd stop!â
Joel blinked again, pushing himself up on one elbow, confusion and irritation crossing his face. âItâs just⌠itâs just to take the edge off,â he slurred, running a hand over his face. âYou donât get it.â
âNo, I do get it,â you shot back, your voice sharp. âI get that youâre hurting, Joel, I get you want to know where Tommy is but this is not the way.â
Joelâs eyes narrowed, some of the grogginess leaving his gaze. âIâm trying,â he muttered, a hint of defensiveness in his tone. âIâm doing the best I can, alright? Itâs not that easyâŚâ
You took a step closer, your heart pounding in your chest. âI need you, Joel,â you whispered, your voice breaking. âI need you here, with me⌠not drowning in a bottle. Weâre supposed to be in this together, remember?â
He looked away, his jaw tightening, but he didnât respond immediately. The silence stretched between you, heavy and tense. Finally, he let out a long breath, his shoulders slumping slightly. âHe is my brother, the only family I get left.â he muttered, almost too softly to hear.
âWhat about me?â you asked, voice trembling.
Damn, why were you getting so emotional.
Joel's brow furrowed, clearly caught off guard by your question. He blinked, as if trying to process your words, and then his expression softened. âWhat are you talkingâ about?â he asked gently, taking a step closer to you. âOf course, you're my family. You know that. Youâre everything.â His fingers brushed against your arm, tentative, as though he was still uncertain if youâd accept his touch.
You felt a lump forming in your throat, and you blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears at bay. âThen why does it feel like Iâm not enough?â you murmured, the words slipping out before you could stop them.
Joel's thumb brushed against your cheek, wiping away a tear you hadnât realized had fallen. âYou are, sweetheart,â he murmured, his voice steady but soft. âI promise you are. Iâm just⌠Iâm scared. Scared of what could happen to you⌠to us.â
You looked up into his eyes, searching for somethingâan answer, a reassurance, anything to ease the turmoil inside you. "How are you feeling'?" he asked suddenly, his voice quieter, more tender than before.
The question caught you off guard. You blinked, trying to gather your thoughts. "I⌠I donât know," you admitted honestly. âTiredâŚâ
Joel nodded slowly, his hand slipping from your cheek to rest on your shoulder. âI know, I get it,â he said quietly. âBut you gotta promise me⌠if thereâs somethingâ wrong, youâll tell meâ
You nodded, âI promise.â
You wrapped your arms around Joel, pulling him into a tight embrace. The warmth of his body against yours was a small comfort, a fleeting sense of security in the chaos that seemed to be swirling around you. As you clung to him, the guilt and the weight of the hidden truth about your pregnancy settled heavily on your shoulders.
Joel held you close, his hand gently rubbing your back, his touch reassuring and steady. âIâm sorry,â you murmured into his shoulder, the words escaping almost involuntarily. âIâm sorry for everything.â
Joelâs arms tightened around you, and he pressed a kiss to the top of your head. âAinât nothinâ to be sorry for,â he said softly. âWeâre in this together, you hear me? Weâll get through it. Weâll figure it out.â
You nodded against him, feeling a mix of relief and deep-seated worry. The truth about the pregnancy was still looming, a secret that was becoming increasingly difficult to keep. Every time you looked at Joel, you could see the love and concern in his eyes, and it made the weight of your silence feel all the more burdensome.
As you slowly pulled away from the hug, you wiped at your eyes, trying to steady your emotions. Joel looked at you with a soft expression, his worry evident but tempered with the resolve to support you no matter what.
The thoughts of your pregnancy, the uncertainty of the future, and the fear of how this might change everything were still swirling in your mind. You felt a pang of guilt as you remembered Tess's words, and you struggled with the decision of when and how to reveal the truth.
Joel seemed to sense the inner conflict you were grappling with. âIf you need space, or if you need to talk about it,â he began, his voice steady, âjust let me know. Iâm here for you, no matter what.â You nodded, forcing a small, grateful smile. âThank you, Joel. I⌠I just need a little time.â
He nodded in understanding, and as you both sat down, the silence between you was filled with an unspoken promise of support and love.
You woke up a little later, feeling the soft warmth of Joelâs arm wrapped protectively around your waist. For a moment, you simply lay there, savoring the comfort and the faint sense of security his presence provided. The room was quiet, the only sound the steady rhythm of Joelâs breathing.
Gently, you eased yourself out of bed, careful not to disturb him. You tiptoed out of the bedroom, the coolness of the apartment a stark contrast to the warmth youâd left behind. As you walked through the small living space, you noticed that Tess was already up, sitting at the table with a cup of coffee.
She looked up as you entered, her gaze softening. âHey,â she said quietly, setting the cup down. âHowâre you feeling?â
You offered her a small, tired smile. âBetter, thanks,â you replied, taking a seat across from her. âI just needed some space to think.â
Tess nodded; her expression thoughtful. âDid you think about what I say?â
You took a deep breath, considering Tess's question. âA little,â you admitted, your voice soft. âItâs just been overwhelming, and Iâm not sure how to handle everything yet.â
Tess studied you for a moment, her eyes reflecting both concern and a hint of sadness âAnd?â she reached across the table, placing a comforting hand over yours. âI understand itâs overwhelming,â she said gently. âBut you have to face it.â
You glanced down at your hands, gripping the edge of the table as if it might anchor you to the present moment. The room felt too small, the weight of your thoughts pressing heavily on your shoulders. âIt canât beâŚIâm scaredâ you confessed, your voice trembling slightly.
Tess took a deep breath, her expression softening. âTake the test, Iâll go with youâ she said, showing support.
âWha-wha-what? I donât have any testâ you said, voice trembling
Tess gave you a small, understanding smile, her hand still resting over yours. âI know,â she said softly. âBut thereâs a way to get one. I can ask around⌠discreetly. I have a contact who might be able to help.â
Your heart pounded in your chest, a mix of fear and disbelief coursing through you. âYouâd do that? For me?â The idea of someone knowing, of even a whisper of this spreading through the QZ, sent a chill down your spine. But the calm certainty in Tessâs eyes steadied you.
âOf course,â she replied without hesitation. âIâve got your back, always. Weâve been through worse, havenât we?â
You nodded slowly, though the tight knot in your stomach seemed to twist even more. âYeah, I guess,â you muttered, trying to sound convinced, even though nothing had felt quite like this. âBut what if⌠what if itâs true, Tess? What do I do then?â
Tess squeezed your hand gently, her thumb brushing over your knuckles. âThen we figure it out, step by step,â she said. âFirst things first, we need to know for sure. Until then, try not to let your mind spiral, okay?â
You swallowed hard, nodding again, though your mind was already a storm of thoughts and worries. You could feel the weight of this new reality settling onto your shoulders, heavier than anything youâd felt before. âOkay,â you whispered. âIâll try.â
Tess stood up, giving your hand one last comforting squeeze before letting go. âIâll see what I can do tomorrow,â she promised. âGo back to bed and try to rest.â
Your mind raced with possibilities and fears as you made your way back to the small bedroom, trying to steady your breathing, to find some calm in the storm of your thoughts.
When you slipped back into the darkened room, Joel was still lying on his side, one arm stretched across the bed as if reaching for you even in sleep. You carefully lifted the blanket and slid back under it, trying not to wake him. But as soon as you settled in, his arm instinctively curled around your waist, pulling you close. His warmth enveloped you, and for a moment, you felt a flicker of safety.
Joel's voice came out in a sleepy murmur, rough around the edges. âWhere were you?â he mumbled; his breath warm against your neck. You could feel the weight of his arm, heavy and reassuring, holding you as if he sensed your unease.
âJust⌠talking to Tess,â you whispered back, trying to keep your voice steady.
His grip around you tightened slightly, his thumb tracing small circles against your side. Even in his half-asleep state, there was a protectiveness in the way he held you. âEverything okay?â he asked, still drowsy, but there was a hint of concern creeping into his tone.
You hesitated for a second, your heart beating faster. You didnât want to lie, but you also couldnât tell himânot yet, not until you knew for sure. âYeah,â you finally replied, trying to sound convincing.
Joel made a low, comforting sound, a mix between a hum and a sigh. He nuzzled closer, his lips brushing lightly against your shoulder. âDonât worry,â he murmured, his voice trailing off as sleep tried to claim him again. âWeâll figure it out⌠whatever it is.â
You bit your lip, feeling a lump form in your throat. You wanted to believe him, wanted to let his words soothe the fear gnawing at your insides. But all you could do was rest your hand over his, feeling the roughness of his skin beneath your palm, grounding yourself in his presence.
âYeah,â you whispered back, more to yourself than to him. âWe always do.â
Joelâs breathing began to slow again, deepening as he drifted back to sleep. You closed your eyes, pressing yourself closer against him, feeling the steady rise and fall of his chest.
âI love youâ you whispered to him, breaking the silence. You were afraid of losing him.
For a moment, there was only the quiet of the room, the soft hum of the distant generator outside, and the gentle rhythm of Joel's breath against your skin. You wondered if he'd even heard you, or if your whispered words had been lost in the space between wakefulness and sleep.
Then, you felt his grip tighten around you, his hand moving to hold you closer, almost as if he was afraid, you might slip away. His lips brushed against your shoulder, a tender, lingering kiss that sent a shiver down your spine. "I love you too," he murmured, his voice a deep, husky whisper in the darkness. There was a raw honesty in his words, an openness that you rarely heard from him, as if he understood the fear hidden beneath your confession.
His lips pressed against your shoulder again, this time firmer, more deliberate. "Ain't nothing gonna change that," he added softly, his breath warm against your skin. His thumb stroked gently over the fabric of your shirt, tracing soothing patterns that spoke of comfort and promises unspoken.
You closed your eyes, letting his words wash over you, feeling a mix of relief and longing. The fear still lingered, but in this moment, held in his arms, it felt a little more manageable. You leaned back into him, feeling the strength in his body, the steady beat of his heart against your back.
Joel held you tighter, as if sensing your need for reassurance. "We'll get through this," he whispered. "Whatever it is, we'll face it together. You and me."
You nodded against him, unable to find your voice, your heart swelling with the weight of everything unsaid. "Together," you repeated softly, your hand squeezing his, grounding yourself in his presence.
For now, that was enough.
Joel woke up slowly, his body protesting against the cold air that had settled in the room overnight. He blinked against the dim light filtering through the cracked blinds, reaching out instinctively to your side of the bed, only to find it empty. His hand moved across the sheets, finding them cool, your warmth long gone.
He sat up, a frown creasing his brow as a flicker of worry ran through him. He scanned the room, half-expecting to see you in the corner, maybe getting dressed or lost in thought, but the room was still, too still. He called your name, softly at first, then a little louder. No answer.
His heart quickened as he swung his legs over the side of the bed, grabbing his jeans from the chair and yanking them on. The apartment was quiet, eerily so, with no sign of movement or life. His boots hit the floor with a dull thud as he pulled them on, his gaze darting around the small space.
Where the hell were you?
He moved quickly to the kitchen, eyes scanning the counters, the sinkâanywhere you might have left a note, a sign of where youâd gone. But there was nothing. Just the quiet hum of the building settling around him. He glanced toward the front door, noticing Tess's boots missing from their usual spot. A knot of unease tightened in his chest. Neither of you were there.
He ran a hand through his hair, cursing under his breath. You wouldnât have left without telling him, not without saying something. And Tessâshe was always up to something, but she never left you behind. He felt his pulse quicken, a gnawing sense of dread creeping in as he grabbed his jacket from the hook near the door, slipping it on with practiced haste.
Joel pushed open the door and stepped into the hallway, his boots echoing against the worn floorboards. He looked around, scanning for any sign of you or Tess. The hallway was empty, but a few doors down, a neighborâa middle-aged man Joel recognized but didnât know wellâwas stepping out, adjusting his coat.
âHey,â Joel called out, his voice sharper than intended. The man looked up, surprised. âYou seen them?â He gestured back to your apartment.
The man shook his head slowly, clearly unsure who Joel was referring to. âNah, havenât seen anyone this morning,â he replied. âEverything okay?â
Joel forced a tight smile, though his stomach was churning with worry. âYeah, fine,â he muttered, turning away. He started down the stairs, moving quickly, almost without thinking. His mind raced, a thousand worst-case scenarios flashing through his thoughts. Where could you be? Why hadnât you said anything?
He made his way down to the ground floor, heading toward the small communal area near the entrance, where a few people were already gathered, murmuring quietly among themselves. He scanned the room, his eyes searching, hoping to catch a glimpse of you or Tess.
âJoel!â A voice cut through the chatter, and he turned to see one of Tessâs contactsâDanny, a wiry guy with a nervous energyâwaving him over. Joelâs heart jumped. Maybe Danny had seen you.
âWhereâs Tess?â Joel asked as he approached, not bothering with pleasantries.
Dannyâs face tightened slightly, and he glanced around, lowering his voice. âShe went out early, looking for something⌠didnât say what. Figured you knew.â
Joel clenched his jaw, frustration flaring in his chest. âAnd her?â he asked, his voice edged with urgency. âYou see her?â
Danny shook his head. âNo, man. I just saw Tess.â
Joel felt a chill run down his spine. He took a step back, his mind racing with questions. If Tess had gone out and you werenât with her, then where the hell were you?
He turned, scanning the room one more time, then made a decision. He needed to find you, now. Whatever this was, wherever you were, he wasnât going to wait around and let worry tear him apart.
You sat in Lydia's small, cluttered living room, nerves thrumming beneath your skin like a live wire. The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and old books, a comforting combination that somehow made you feel more at ease, despite the circumstances. Lydia's place was a small haven in the chaos of the QZ, filled with mismatched furniture, faded floral curtains, and a few potted plants she somehow managed to keep alive. The doctor herself, an older woman with graying hair pulled back into a messy bun, moved around the space with a calm, practiced efficiency. Her hands were steady, her expression focused but kind.
Tess stood beside you, her presence a quiet reassurance. She had her arms crossed, her foot tapping lightly against the worn wooden floor as she watched Lydia prepare a small kit on the table. Lydia glanced over at you, her eyes soft with a mixture of concern and affection. âYou look pale, sweetheart,â she said, her voice gentle but firm. âYouâve been keeping up with your food and water?â
You managed a small nod, though your stomach felt like it was tied in knots. âYeah, just⌠a lot on my mind,â you murmured. Your voice sounded small in the stillness of the room.
Lydia nodded knowingly, her gaze flicking to Tess for a moment before returning to you. âIâve seen that look before,â she said softly. âIt's not easy, being in this kind of situation⌠but youâre not alone, okay?â
You bit your lip, feeling a lump form in your throat again. âThanks, Lydia⌠I just⌠Iâm scared,â you admitted, your voice barely more than a whisper. âI donât know what to do if⌠if itâs true.â
Lydia came over to you, setting a warm hand on your shoulder. âItâs okay to be scared,â she said kindly.
You nodded, taking a deep breath as she handed you a small, well-worn plastic device. A pregnancy test. It felt surreal holding it in your hand, the weight of it much heavier than its actual size.
Lydiaâs expression softened. âThe bathroom is down the hall,â she instructed gently. âTake your time, and when you're ready, come back out. No rush.â
You glanced at Tess, who gave you a reassuring nod. âGo on,â she urged softly. âIâll be right here.â
Swallowing hard, you stood up, clutching the test in your hand, and made your way down the narrow hallway to the small, dimly lit bathroom. The old mirror above the sink was cracked, reflecting your nervous expression in fragmented pieces. You took a deep breath, feeling the cool tile under your bare feet, and tried to steady your racing heart.
The minutes stretched out as you stood there, staring at the test in your hands, feeling the weight of this decision. You knew that everything could change in an instantâyour life, your relationship with Joel, everything you thought you knew about the world and your place in it.
You finally gathered your courage, took the test, and set it on the sink. You watched it like it might explode, the seconds ticking by with agonizing slowness. You could hear the muffled voices of Tess and Lydia down the hall, their words indistinct but soothing in their familiarity.
And then, after what felt like an eternity, you saw the result. Your breath caught in your throat, your knees feeling weak. You stared at it, your mind struggling to catch up, to process what you were seeing.
It was positive.
You felt a wave of emotions crash over youâfear, confusion, a strange sense of disbelief. You gripped the edge of the sink, needing something solid to hold on to, to keep yourself from spiraling. Tears welled in your eyes, unbidden, and you blinked them back, swallowing hard.
You took a few deep breaths, trying to steady yourself before turning back toward the door. You stepped out of the bathroom, your face pale, your hands trembling slightly.
Tess was the first to notice, her eyes widening as she saw your expression. She moved quickly to your side, her hand gripping your arm gently. âHey⌠whatâs the result?â she asked, though the look on your face already told her everything.
Lydia stepped closer; her eyes filled with empathy. âItâs okay, sweetheart,â she murmured. âJust take a breath.â
You looked at them both, your voice barely a whisper. âItâs⌠itâs positive,â you admitted, your heart pounding. âIâm⌠Iâm pregnant.â
Tess squeezed your arm, a mixture of concern and determination on her face. âOkay,â she said firmly. âWeâre going to handle this. Weâre gonna figure it out.â
Lydia nodded; her expression warm. âYouâre not alone in this,â she reassured you. âWeâll do what we can to make sure youâre safe⌠and healthy.â
You swallowed hard, feeling the tears spill over despite your best efforts to hold them back. âWhat⌠what do I do now?â you asked, your voice shaking. âI donât want anyone to know this, okay?â
âJoelâs has to knowâ Tess said.
âNo.â Your voice came out sharper than you intended, a flash of panic twisting through your chest. âNo,â you repeated, firmer this time. âI canât⌠I canât tell him. Not yet.â
Tessâs eyes narrowed slightly, but her expression remained calm. âWhy not?â she asked gently, though there was a hint of insistence in her voice. âHe deserves to know. Heâs going to find out sooner or later.â
You shook your head, feeling the tears start to flow again. âI just⌠Iâm not ready,â you whispered, your voice trembling. âHeâs already dealing with so much, with losing contact with Tommy, and⌠I donât want to put this on him. Not when I donât even know how I feel about it yet.â
Lydia placed a comforting hand on your shoulder, her touch steady and grounding. âItâs okay to feel this way,â she said softly. âBut Tess is right. Joel will need to know eventually. Heâs your partner⌠in all of this.â
You bit your lip, trying to steady your breath. âI just need some time,â you murmured, feeling a deep ache in your chest. âPlease⌠donât say anything to him. Not until I figure out how to even say it myself.â
Tess sighed, a mixture of frustration and understanding on her face. âAlright,â she agreed quietly, but you knew she was lying.
She walked towards the door before you saying to Lydia âIâll pay you later.â
âThere is no need, Iâd do anything for this one hereâ she said, squeezing your shoulder.
Tess gave Lydia a small nod, but her expression was tight, her jaw set. You could sense the conflict simmering beneath her calm exterior. You knew Tess well enough to recognize that she wasnât pleased with your decision. She paused at the door, one hand resting on the frame, before turning back to you.
âAlright,â she said again, this time her voice softer, almost resigned. âWe need to get back. Joelâs probably tearing his hair out by now.â There was a hint of a wry smile, but it didnât quite reach her eyes. You felt a pang of guilt; you could only imagine how worried Joel must be at this point.
Lydia gave you a reassuring squeeze on your shoulder. âTake care of yourself, okay?â she said softly. âAnd if you need anything, anything at all, you know where to find me.â
You managed a small, grateful smile. âThank you, Lydia⌠for everything,â you whispered, feeling a rush of emotion swell in your chest.
Tess opened the door and stepped outside, waiting for you to follow. You took a deep breath, trying to steady your nerves, before moving to join her. As you stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, Tess glanced at you, her expression unreadable.
âYou know heâs gonna ask where we were,â she muttered, keeping her voice low. âAnd you know I wonât lie to him.â
Your heart sank a little. âI know,â you admitted quietly. âJust⌠donât tell him yet, okay? I need to be the one to do it, Tess.â
She nodded, but the tension in her shoulders didnât ease. âYou better tell him soon,â she warned her tone more serious now. âBecause if you donât, I will.â
Two days had passed since you were delivered the news, and as you went through your shift, the morning sun cast a pale light over the QZ, and the usual noise of activity buzzed around you. You focused on your tasks, trying to push through the lingering fatigue and nausea. Despite your efforts to stay steady, a wave of nausea hit you suddenly, making your stomach churn violently.
You stumbled to the side, clutching your midsection as you struggled to keep yourself upright. Before you could react, the contents of your stomach erupted, and you doubled over, throwing up onto the ground. The sudden and intense discomfort left you gasping for breath, feeling a mix of embarrassment and distress.
Nearby, a few of your co-workers glanced over, their faces a mixture of concern and discomfort. One of them approached, a frown on his face. âYou alright? Maybe you should sit down or get some fresh air.â
You shook your head, trying to regain your composure. âIâm fine,â you managed to say, though your voice was shaky. âJust⌠give me a moment.â
The soldier supervising the shift, who had already been keeping an eye on you, approached with a stern expression. âWhatâs going on? You canât be throwing up in the middle of work. If youâre sick, you need to go home.â
You tried to protest, but your weakened state made it hard to argue. âIâm okay,â you said weakly. âI just need a minute.â
Before you could say more, Joel appeared, his face etched with concern as he hurried over to you. He placed a supportive hand on your back. âYou need to go home,â he said firmly, his eyes filled with worry. âYouâre not doing yourself any good pushing through like this.â
The soldier gave Joel a skeptical look. âShe needs to get back to work. We canât afford to have people slacking off.â
Joelâs expression hardened, and he took a protective step forward. âSheâs not slacking off. Sheâs sick. You wanna have her work herself into the ground? Take her home, and Iâll deal with it.â
The soldier seemed taken aback by Joelâs intensity but eventually relented, grumbling under his breath. âFine. Take her home, Miller. We donât need sick people on duty.â
Joel nodded, helping you to your feet and wrapping an arm around you for support. âLetâs get you outta here,â he said gently, guiding you toward the exit.
As you walked out of the QZ, the cool air was a welcome relief, but the anxiety and guilt still gnawed at you. âIâm sorry,â you murmured, your voice barely audible.
Joel glanced at you, his eyes softening. âYou donât need to apologize, honey.â With Joelâs reassuring presence beside you, you made your way back to the apartment, each step feeling a bit heavier as you faced the reality of your situation.
When you and Joel arrived back at the apartment, you were both greeted by the quiet, familiar surroundings. Tess was sitting at the kitchen table, her eyes lifting from a worn-out map sheâd been studying. She looked up as you entered, her expression shifting from concern to relief.
âHey, youâre back,â Tess said, standing up quickly. âHow are you feeling?â
Joel helped you inside, guiding you to the couch. âSheâs not feeling great,â he said, his voice low. âShe had another wave of nausea at work.â
Tess crossed the room, taking a seat next to you on the couch. âAlright, letâs get you comfortable,â she said, her tone gentle. She reached for a blanket and draped it over you, her eyes scanning your face with worry.
You nodded weakly, feeling the exhaustion and the strain of the morning catching up with you. âThanks, Tess,â you murmured, settling into the couch as Joel stood nearby, his hands resting on his hips, clearly trying to mask his concern.
Tess turned to Joel. âYou should take a break, too,â she suggested. âI can keep an eye on her for a bit.â
âNo.â Joel glanced at you, âI want to know whatâs happening, and donât lie to meâ he demanded, especially to you.
You frightened under his stare. You looked over at Tess looking for a way of reassurance.
Tess met Joelâs gaze steadily, her own concern evident. âJoel,â she began softly, âwe need to approach this carefully. We donât want to push her too hard.â
Joelâs eyes softened slightly, but his jaw remained set. âI just want to understand whatâs going on. Sheâs been sick for days, and I need to know why.â
You took a shaky breath, feeling the weight of both their stares. âJoel,â you said quietly, âIâve been⌠trying to manage. Itâs been hard to admit, but⌠Tess might be right. Iâm not sure how to handle it all.â
Tess reached out, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. âWhat weâre dealing with isnât just a simple illness. Itâs important that we address it properly.â
Joelâs expression shifted from frustration to deep concern. âWhat are you saying?â he asked, his voice softer now, but still laced with worry.
âJoel, IâŚIâ you wanted to tell him, but you couldnât find the words or the courage to do it.
Joel's gaze was intense, waiting for you to continue. Tessâs hand on your shoulder was a grounding presence, urging you to find the strength to speak.
You took another deep breath, the lump in your throat making it hard to talk. âJoel,â you began again, your voice trembling, âIâve been feeling⌠really sick, and itâs more than just the usual stuff. Itâs⌠itâs becauseâŚâ
Again, your voice got cut.
âBecause of what?â he demanded.
âShe is pregnant, Joelâ Tess answered for you.
Joelâs face went pale as he absorbed Tessâs words. His eyes flickered between you and Tess, trying to reconcile the new information with what he had seen in you recently. The silence in the room grew heavy, punctuated only by the sound of your shallow breaths.
Joelâs hands dropped to his sides, his expression a mix of shock and disbelief. âPregnant?â he repeated, almost as if he couldnât believe it. His voice was a mix of confusion and pain, and he took a step back, needing space to process this revelation.
You nodded, tears threatening to spill again. âI didnât want to tell you like this,â you said quietly. âIâve been trying to manage, but itâs been really hard.â
Joel ran a hand through his hair, pacing slightly as he tried to gather his thoughts. He turned away from you, his face contorted with frustration. âGoddammit,â he muttered, running a hand through his hair again, the tension in his body palpable. âThis⌠this is just too much.â
You flinched at his outburst, tears spilling freely now. âJoel, pleaseââ you began, but he cut you off, his voice rising.
âDo you have any idea what this means?â Joelâs tone was harsh, though there was a tremor of anguish beneath the anger. âWeâre barely surviving as it is, and now⌠now youâre telling me youâre pregnant?â
Tess stepped in, placing a firm hand on Joelâs shoulder. âJoel, this isnât helping,â she said sharply. âShe needs support right now, not anger.â
Joel shrugged off her hand, his frustration boiling over. âI know, I know,â he snapped. âBut itâs a lot to take in! I canât just ignore it!â
You watched, your heart breaking as you saw Joelâs struggle to come to terms with the news. âJoel,â you said, trying to reach out to him despite your own pain, âIâm sorry. I didnât want to add to the stress, but I didnât know how else to handle it.â
Joelâs eyes met yours, and for a moment, the anger in his gaze faltered, replaced by a deep sadness. âI just⌠I donât know how to fix this,â
he said, his voice dropping to a strained whisper. âI thought we had a chance to figure things out. Now everythingâs just falling apart.â
Tess moved closer; her voice softer but firm. âJoel, getting angry wonât solve anything. We need to focus on what we can do now. What matters is getting her the help she needs.
âWe were supposed to leave to find Tommy and now we wonât be able to.â He said, angry.
âWhat?â you asked, absorbing the new information.
Joelâs gaze dropped to the floor, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the air. âWe were planning to leave for Tommyâs,â he said, his voice tight with frustration. âBut with this⌠we might not be able to. Weâre stuck here now, trying to figure out how to manage all this mess.â
You stared at him, the realization hitting you like a cold wave. âWait, you were planning to leave? To find Tommy?â
Joel nodded, rubbing a hand over his face. âYeah, Tess and I thought it was the best chance for us. Tommyâs got connections, and he might be able to help us get through this. But nowâŚâ His voice trailed off, the anger and sadness mixing in his eyes. âNow, everythingâs fucked up.â
âWhen were you planning to tell me?â You asked, hurt.
Joelâs face fell at your question, and he looked away, struggling to find the right words. âI wasnât⌠I didnât mean to keep it from you,â he said, his voice rough. âThings were just⌠so complicated. We thought we had more time to figure things out before we had to tell you.â
You felt a pang of hurt at his words. âSo, you were just going to leave me in the dark? You were planning to leave without even talking to me about it?â
Joel looked back at you; his eyes filled with regret. âNo, thatâs not what I meant. Of course you were coming with us.â
âBut now Iâm a burden.â You uttered a thought Joel perhaps was having.
Joelâs face tightened at your words, the weight of your accusation clearly hitting him hard. âThatâs not what I meant,â he said quickly, his voice strained. âYouâre not a burden, never say that again.â
You stood up, your emotions swirling, a mix of hurt and frustration. âThen why does it feel like everythingâs falling apart because of me?â you asked, your voice trembling.
You stood up, your emotions swirling, a mix of hurt and frustration. âThen why does it feel like everythingâs falling apart because of me?â you asked, your voice trembling. Tears began to spill down your cheeks, the weight of the situation overwhelming you. âIâm pregnant and I donât know what to do. I thought you were going to hold me and tell me everything was going to be okay, butâfuck this!â You turned abruptly and walked towards the bedroom, trying to escape the chaos of your emotions.
Joel's heart ached as he watched you go, his own emotions roiling. He hesitated for a moment before following you, his steps heavy with regret and worry. He reached the bedroom door just as you were sinking onto the edge of the bed, your shoulders shaking with sobs.
âHey,â Joel said softly, his voice carrying a note of desperation. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean for any of this. I was just⌠scared and confused. I shouldâve been there for you, and I wasnât.â
You didnât look up, focusing on trying to control your breathing. âLeave me alone.â You wiped your tears with the back of your hand, feeling his presence beside you.
âLeave, Joel.â You sobbed.
Joelâs heart sank further as you pushed him away, the pain in your voice cutting him deeply. He hesitated at the bedroom door, torn between his desire to comfort you and the need to respect your space.
âAlright,â Joel said softly, his voice almost a whisper. âIâll give you some time. Iâm sorry.â With that, he turned and walked away, leaving you alone with your emotions.
As Joel retreated, Tess quietly entered the room. She found you on the edge of the bed, still shaking with sobs. Without saying a word, she sat down beside you, offering silent support. Tessâs presence was calm and steady, a stark contrast to the turmoil you felt inside.
âHey,â Tess said gently, placing a comforting hand on your back. âIâm here. Just breathe. Weâll get through this.â
You looked up at her, your eyes red and tearful. Tess didnât try to force conversation; instead, she simply sat with you, her hand a reassuring presence on your back. Slowly, the comforting silence and Tessâs steady presence began to soothe you. Your breathing gradually steadied, and the tears started to subside.
Tess helped you settle into a more comfortable position on the bed, making sure you were warm and covered. As you drifted off to sleep, the emotional exhaustion finally taking its toll, Tess stayed by your side, her watchful gaze softening with concern.
After a while, Tess glanced toward the door and saw Joel standing there, his expression one of deep regret and sorrow. He looked as though he was trying to come to terms with everything that had happened. Tess gave him a sympathetic nod before turning her attention back to you.
âI know this isnât the ideal situation,â Tess began, her tone firm yet understanding. âBut she needs you now, Joel. More than ever.â
Joelâs jaw clenched, his eyes flicking from Tess to where you lay curled up on the bed, still trembling from your tears. âI donât know if I can do this, Tess,â he whispered, his voice barely audible, filled with the weight of his fears.
Tess placed a hand on his arm, squeezing gently. âYouâve got to try,â she urged. âSheâs scared, and she needs you to be there for her. You donât have to have all the answers, but you do need to stay. You need to lay down next to her and protect her, like you always have.â
Joel looked at her, conflicted, the fight still lingering in his eyes. But Tess didnât back down, her gaze unwavering. âSheâs not asking you to be perfect, Joel. Sheâs asking you to be there.â
For a moment, Joel hesitated, the weight of the decision hanging heavy in the air. But then, slowly, he nodded, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction. He walked over to the bed, his movements careful and deliberate as he lay down beside you, his presence cautious but steady.
You stirred slightly, sensing his nearness even in your sleep, and instinctively moved closer to him, seeking the comfort you had always found in his arms. Joel wrapped an arm around you, holding you gently, as if afraid you might break. And as Tess watched, she saw the fear and anger in his eyes slowly give way to something softer.
The room was quiet, save for the sound of your breathing, as you finally found peace in sleep. Joel stayed awake, his thoughts still tangled, but his grip on you never faltered. Tess left the room quietly, leaving the two of you to find whatever solace you could in each other.
Joel lay beside you, staring up at the cracked ceiling of the apartment. He couldnât sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, his mind raced, replaying the argument from earlier and the harsh truths he had tried to push away for so long. The room was quiet now, but his thoughts were anything but.
His gaze shifted to you, lying peacefully next to him, your breathing soft and even. You looked so small, so fragile, and it hit him all over again just how much had changed in the span of a few hours. The life growing inside you was a reality he couldnât ignore anymore, no matter how much he wanted to. He watched you, his heart heavy with a mix of fear, guilt, and something he hadnât allowed himself to feel in a long timeâhope.
The thought of becoming a father again terrified him. After Sarah, after everything he had lost, he didnât know if he could survive that kind of pain again. But here you were, carrying his child, and it was as if the world was asking him to take that risk all over again. He didnât know if he had it in him, but as he watched you sleep, so peaceful and trusting, he realized that you were counting on him.
Joel stayed awake through the night, his thoughts swirling with memories of Sarah, the life he had lost, and the uncertain future ahead. He wanted to protect you, to shield you from the harshness of the world outside, but he didnât know if he was strong enough to protect you both from the dangers that lay ahead. The weight of responsibility felt crushing, yet he knew he couldnât turn awayânot now, not ever.
As the first light of dawn began to seep through the cracks in the curtains, Joelâs exhaustion finally began to catch up with him. His eyes grew heavy, and despite his best efforts, he drifted into a restless sleep, his arm still draped protectively over you.
When he finally woke, the apartment was filled with the pale light of early morning. He blinked groggily, his mind still clouded with sleep, but something felt off. The warmth of your body beside him was gone. He reached out, his hand finding only the empty space where you had been.
Panic flared in his chest as he sat up quickly, his eyes scanning the room. The bed was cold where you had lain, and the room was eerily silent. âWhere the hell are you?â he muttered to himself, running a hand through his hair as he forced himself out of bed.
His heart pounded in his chest as he searched the small apartment, calling your name, but there was no answer. The sense of dread he had felt the night before came rushing back, stronger than ever. He knew you couldnât have gone far, but the thought of you out there alone, especially in your condition, made his stomach twist with worry.
Joel threw on his jacket, his movements frantic as he prepared to leave and search for you. He couldnât bear the thought of something happening to you, not when he had just realized how much he needed you. As he headed for the door, he stopped short, his hand gripping the doorknob tightly. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down, to think. You were strong, capableâhe knew that. But still, the protective urge in him screamed to find you, to bring you back and keep you safe.
With one last glance around the empty apartment, Joel stepped outside, his mind racing as he tried to figure out where you might have gone. He couldnât lose youânot now, not ever.
Joel knew you had a habit of going to certain places when you needed spaceâwhen you needed to clear your head. He made his way through the maze of streets, his mind fixated on finding you. As he walked, his thoughts spiraled. What if you were angry enough to leave the QZ? What if youâd decided you didnât want to face him again? The guilt from the night before weighed heavily on him, and the fear that heâd pushed you away was overwhelming.
He headed towards a small, secluded spot behind one of the less-used buildingsâa place you often went when you needed to be alone. It was out of sight from most people, offering a rare bit of privacy in the crowded QZ. As he turned the corner, his breath caught in his throat. There you were, sitting on an old, crumbling bench, your hands clasped tightly in your lap.
Relief washed over him, so intense it almost brought him to his knees. For a moment, he just stood there, taking in the sight of you. You looked small and lost, your shoulders hunched as if the weight of the world had finally settled on them. But you were safe. You were here. That was all that mattered.
He approached slowly, not wanting to startle you. The crunch of gravel under his boots made you look up, your eyes meeting his. The raw emotion in your gazeâfear, uncertainty, and something that looked like regretâhit him like a punch to the gut.
Joel stopped a few feet away, unsure of what to say, how to bridge the gap that had opened between you. His mouth opened, but no words came out. What could he possibly say to make this better? To fix the hurt he had caused?
âI didnât mean to leave,â you finally said, your voice small and fragile. âI justâŚneeded to think.â
Joel nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. âI get it,â he replied, his voice rough with emotion. He took a cautious step closer, wanting to reach out, but unsure if you wanted him to. âI shouldnât have⌠I shouldnât have let you leave like that.â
You shook your head, a tear slipping down your cheek. âItâs not your fault. I justââ Your voice broke, and you wiped at your eyes, frustration evident in the gesture. âI donât know how to deal with all of this. Itâs too much, Joel. Everything is too much.â
âI donât know if I can do this,â you whispered, the words barely audible.
Joel crouched down in front of you, his hand still on your shoulder, his gaze locked onto yours. âWe donât have to have all the answers right now,â he said softly.
âThere isnât a place for raising a baby.â You spoke, looking down at your hands, the thoughts swirling in your mind too overwhelming to express. âLydia could help me,â you whispered, almost to yourself. âShe could help meâŚterminate it.â
Joelâs reaction was immediate, his voice hard and unyielding. âNo.â The word came out sharper than he intended, and he saw you flinch. He softened his tone, but the resolve remained. âWeâre not doing that.â
You looked up at him, your eyes wide with a mixture of fear and confusion. âBut, Joel, what ifââ you began, but he cut you off.
âI said no,â he repeated, more firmly this time. âWeâre not ending this.â
Tears welled up in your eyes, the intensity of the moment overwhelming you. âBut Iâm scared, Joel,â you confessed, your voice breaking. âWhat if we canât do this? What if itâs too much?â
Joel crossed the room in two long strides and knelt in front of you, his hands gently cupping your face. âIâm scared too,â he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. âBut I canât lose you.â
Tears streamed down your cheeks as you looked into his eyes, the weight of the decision pressing down on you. âI donât know if I can do this,â you whispered, your voice barely audible.
Joel pulled you into his arms, holding you tightly against his chest. âYouâre not alone in this,â he murmured into your hair. âWeâll do it together. Whatever happens, weâll face it together.â
You clung to him, the fear and uncertainty still gnawing at you, but for the first time since youâd found out, you felt a small measure of comfort. Joel wasnât backing down, and maybe, just maybe, that was enough.
âI love you and I wonât leave you alone, babyâ he whispered, kissing your lips.
Joelâs words wrapped around you like a lifeline, pulling you back from the edge of your fears. You clung to him, your grip tight but gentle, as if you were afraid, he might disappear again. The warmth of his embrace, the sincerity in his voice, and the tenderness of his kiss were all anchors in the storm that had been swirling inside you.
âI love you too,â you whispered back, your voice thick with emotion. You could feel the tears drying on your cheeks, replaced by a sense of tentative hope. The weight of your worries didnât vanish, but Joelâs presence made them seem a little more manageable.
Joel gently cupped your face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away the remaining tears from your cheeks. âWeâre gonna get through this,â he said firmly. âI donât know how, but we will. Weâre a team. Weâve faced worse before.â
You nodded, finding strength in his conviction. âOkay,â you murmured, feeling a flicker of warmth in your chest. âIâll try to believe that.â
Joelâs eyes softened as he leaned in closer, pressing his forehead to yours. âWeâll figure it out together,â he promised. âBut right now, my focus is taking care of you and the baby.â
Hours later, the apartment was quiet once again, save for the soft hum of a generator and the occasional creak of the building settling into its nightly stillness. You had managed to distract yourself with small tasks around the apartment, trying to keep your mind occupied and calm. The weight of the conversation with Joel still lingered, but his earlier reassurance had brought a sense of calm you hadn't expected.
You were in the middle of organizing some supplies when you heard the front door open. The sound of footsteps followed, and a few moments later, Joel's voice cut through the quiet. It was a familiar, comforting sound, but this time, it was tinged with an edge of frustration.
âYou think this is a joke?â Joelâs voice was sharp, and you could hear the anger in his tone.
You quickly moved toward the front of the apartment, concern etching across your face. When you reached the living area, you saw Joel standing in the doorway, his face set in a hard line. Beside him stood a teenagerâa girl who looked no older than sixteen. Her clothes were ragged, and she had a wary, defensive posture.
The girlâs eyes flickered between you and Joel, her expression a mix of fear and defiance. Joelâs anger was palpable, and it was clear that the situation was tense.
âJoel, whatâs going on?â you asked, trying to keep your voice steady, though you felt a pang of anxiety at the sight of the girl and the intensity of Joelâs demeanor.
Joel's eyes shifted to you, the anger in them still evident but now mixed with a hint of exhaustion. âSheâs got a name,â he said, gesturing toward the girl. âHer nameâs Ellie.â
Ellie looked up at you, her eyes wary but hopeful. Joelâs expression softened slightly as he continued, âTurns out sheâs supposed to be delivered to the Fireflies.
You glanced at Joel, understanding dawning. âYouâre going to take her to them,â you said, looking back at Ellie. âAnd youâll have the chance to find Tommy along the way.â
Joel nodded, a hint of resignation in his stance. âYeah, thatâs the deal,â he said.
âBut what aboutââ
Joel cut you off gently. âI know itâs a lot to take in. We need to leave now. Thereâs an opportunity for us to get out of the QZ and head to a place where things might be better. But it means we have to move fast.â
Ellie shifted uncomfortably, glancing between you and Joel. âI donât want to be a problem,â she said quietly. âIf itâs too muchââ
âNo,â you interrupted, shaking your head. âItâs not that. I just⌠Iâm not sure what to do. I mean, this is all so sudden.â
Joel stepped closer, his expression earnest. âWe donât have much time. We need to move quickly before things get worse. I know itâs hard, but this is our chance to get out of here. To find some place where we can start over.â
You looked at Joel, the weight of his words sinking in. âAnd what about the baby?â you asked, your voice barely above a whisper. âHow will weââ
âWeâll figure it out,â Joel said firmly. âWe have to. Thereâs no time to waste. This is our chance to make a new life, to give the baby a better chance.â
You took a deep breath, feeling the gravity of the situation. âAlright,â you said finally, nodding. âIâll do it. Weâll go. Just⌠letâs make sure weâre ready.â
Joelâs face softened with relief, and he gave a nod. âGood. Tess will be back soon. We need to pack up and get out before anyone notices weâre gone.â
As you hurriedly packed, a thought clawed at the back of your mind, growing louder and louder until it burst out of you in a shaky whisper. "But Iâll be a burden," you said, your voice breaking. "Iâll slow you down, Joel. You know it."
Joel stopped what he was doing, turning to face you. "No," he said firmly, the word cutting through the tense air like a knife. He crossed the room in a few quick strides and cupped your face in his hands, forcing you to look into his eyes. There was a fierce intensity in his gaze, something raw and unwavering.
"Youâre not a burden," he insisted, his voice low and filled with emotion. "You're the reason I wake up every day. I wouldnât be alive if it wasnât for you, baby. Without you⌠without you, nothing makes sense anymore."
Your breath hitched, and tears welled up in your eyes as you listened to him, his words breaking down the walls you had built around your fears. Joelâs hands trembled slightly as he continued, his thumb brushing away a tear that had escaped down your cheek.
"So, if this is the chance I have to give you a life you deserve in this shithole," he went on, his voice steady but thick with emotion, "then Iâll take it. Iâll take you with me and give it to you and our baby. I promise you, Iâll do whatever it takes to make sure youâre both safe. I wonât lose you. Not now, not ever."
You could feel his sincerity, the depth of his determination to protect you and the life growing inside you. You felt a wave of emotions crashing over youâfear, relief, hope, and love, all swirling together. You closed your eyes, leaning into his touch, letting his words sink in.
"Joel," you whispered, your voice trembling, "I⌠I donât know if Iâm ready for this, for any of this."
His grip on your face tightened just a bit, his gaze never wavering. "Neither do I," he admitted. "But weâll figure it out. Weâve faced worse, and weâre still standing. Weâll get through this. Together."
You nodded slowly, your heart hammering in your chest. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against yours, and you could feel the warmth of his breath on your skin. "Iâm not letting you go," he murmured.
Ellie stood by the door, her arms crossed, an incredulous look on her face. "Are you seriously risking your pregnant girlfriend?" she asked, her voice sharp with disbelief. She looked between the two of you, clearly struggling to understand the situation.
Joel turned his head, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features, but he kept his voice calm. "It's not that simple, kid."
Ellie scoffed. "Seems pretty simple to me," she shot back. "You're dragging her and⌠whatever's in thereâ" she gestured vaguely toward your stomach, "âthrough god knows what to get me to the Fireflies. What if something happens?"
You took a deep breath, stepping forward to meet Ellieâs eyes. "I know what I'm getting into," you said firmly. "I can take care of myself."
Ellie rolled her eyes. "Yeah, and what if you can't? I mean, what if you get sick or something? What if you get hurt?" Her voice softened, just a bit, the worry evident. "Itâs not just about you anymore."
Joelâs jaw clenched, and you could see the conflict in his eyes. He turned to Ellie; his tone more measured. "I get it, Ellie," he said. "But leaving her here⌠leaving her in this place⌠thatâs not an option either."
Ellie threw her hands up. "Great, so itâs a lose-lose situation."
You couldnât help but let out a small, dry laugh. "Pretty much," you said, trying to inject some lightness into the tension-filled room.
There was a beat of silence, the reality of the situation settling over everyone. Joel reached for your hand, squeezing it gently. "Weâll figure it out," he murmured, more to you than anyone else.
Within a short time, Tess arrived, and the group of you prepared to leave the apartment, stepping out into the uncertain world beyond the QZ. The prospect of escaping to a new place, combined with the responsibility of ensuring the safety of both Ellie and your unborn child, loomed over you.
Joel led the way, his eyes scanning the area as you followed, Ellie close behind. The journey ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty, but for the first time in a long while, you felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for a new beginning.
As you stepped out of the QZ and into the unfamiliar landscape beyond, the weight of your situation pressed heavily on you. The world outside was a mix of desolate ruins and overgrown wilderness, a stark contrast to the relative safety of the quarantine zone. With each step, you could feel the gravity of the journey ahead, not just for yourself, but for your unborn child and Ellie, who now looked up to you as a beacon of hope and guidance.
Joel walked beside you, his presence a constant reassurance in the chaos. He kept a vigilant eye on the surroundings, his hand occasionally reaching out to make sure you were close. Tess, ever practical, moved ahead, scouting the path and ensuring that it was as safe as possible.
Ellie followed behind, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern. The harsh reality of the world outside the QZ was a stark contrast to the relative safety sheâd known, and she looked to you and Joel for guidance and protection.
The landscape seemed to stretch endlessly, with the occasional remnants of civilization scattered among the ruins. The path ahead was uncertain, filled with potential threats and unknown challenges. Yet, with Joelâs hand firmly grasping yours and Tess leading the way, you found a small measure of comfort in the unity of your group.
As you walked, Joel glanced at you occasionally, his gaze softening when he saw the lump forming in your throat.
With each step you took away from the QZ, you felt a mixture of trepidation and hope. The future was uncertain, and the dangers were real, but you were determined to face them head-on, for yourself, for your child, and for the family you were trying to protect.

who? spencer reid x fem!reader category: fluff content warnings: spencer's first post prison christmas, frankensteined the plot of "surface tension", the same family as "here with me", crying, christmas word count: 3.19k a/n: merry christmas!! this is kinda like my gift to you, mostly since it's been sitting in my brain for forever!!!!!!! i love u all! also happy first day of hanukkah if you celebrate <33
âBut Daddyâs not home,â your daughter whimpered as she shuffled under her covers, she looked up at you with wide, curious eyes.
You carefully smoothed out the top of her floral comforter, âI know, baby,â you whispered, reaching up to pinch her cheek affectionately. Youâd let them stay up late to watch the Santa tracker, but eventually, Finn fell asleep on you, and Livvyâs yawns were enough to convince you that it was bedtime. âYou still have to go to sleep. Santa will come whether Daddyâs home or not, and weâll just do the gifts from Mommy and Daddy when he gets back.â
At three years old, Olivia was beginning to understand Spencer being gone the same way Eleanor did; she knew his absence was entirely out of her control, and that didnât sit well with your middle child. You knew you had gotten incredibly lucky when Spencer had been home for Finnâs birthday and Livvyâs had fallen during his sabbatical, but you also knew that you were due for a missed holiday, you just wished it couldâve been Thanksgiving or New Yearâs.
You kissed her forehead before leaving, making sure to leave the door open a crack so the monsters wouldnât get her before you went to Nellâs room. âHey, honey,â you whispered, closing your eldestâs door behind you before going to sit on the edge of her bed. She had her own Christmas tree set up in the corner of the room, the artificial purple tree providing the glow that her nightlight normally would. âAre you ready for bed?â
Nell was lying on top of her covers, staring at her still ceiling fan as she ignored your question. While Livvy was just starting to understand what it meant when Spencer was gone, Nell understood it best, and she had for years now. Sheâd understood when Spencer was in prison, and she understood that he was missing Christmas now.
Slowly, you laid down next to your daughter, propping your head up on the bed and smoothing her hair back. âItâs still Christmas,â you tried to reassure her, but part of you knew that it was a thankless effort, there was nothing you could tell her that would fix her fatherâs absence. âWe can call Dad in the morning while we open presents,â you offered, hoping sheâd appreciate you coming halfway. âIf heâs not busy, maybe we can video chat, and you can show him everything Santa brought you.â
âItâs not the same,â she told you, furrowing her brows and turning away from you on the bed.
Sighing, you pressed a kiss to the back of her head, âI know, Nellie. I know itâs not fair that he doesnât get to be here for Christmas, but Daddy will come back.â There was a sense of urgency in your voice; you were afraid that if your five-year-old lost the joy in Christmas, youâd somehow failed her as a mother. âHeâll be home for your birthday, I promise,â you whispered.
âYou canât promise,â she reminded you, knowing that you and Spencer were generally very specific about your promises, leaning toward the âI promise Iâll tryâ variety.
You hummed in response, âIâd pinky promise you that. Dad will be home for your birthday.â You held up your pinky finger, waiting for her to roll over and reciprocate.
Eleanor rolled over, holding up her pinky finger while brown eyes watched you apprehensively, âOkay,â she breathed, hooking your fingers together and kissing them.
As soon as Spencer told you about the bureauâs contingency to him returning to the BAU, youâd done the math. Eleanorâs sixth birthday would fall near the beginning of his next sabbatical, so you didnât hesitate to make this promise. âItâs time for bed, my girl,â you whispered, smiling at her softly as she pulled the sleeves of her Christmas pajamas over her hands. âSanta canât come if youâre not asleep,â you reminded her, sitting up on the bed and getting up, tucking her purple comforter under her chin before you made your final stop of the night.
Youâd brought Finn to his room before getting the girls settled, but now that you knew they were alright, you came back to his room. The white noise machine was going, and he was fast asleep in his crib. His pacifier, which you were trying to wean him off of, had fallen from his mouth and onto the sheets, so you set it to the side. To you, the second Christmas was always more exciting than the first, now that he was fourteen months old, he had the dexterity to help open presents.
Ruffling his hair, you kissed him goodnight, just like youâd done with the girls, and you left his room, closing the door so that no one would disturb the light-sleeping baby.
There was a late night ahead of you, but first, you settled yourself onto the couch in the living room and pulled out your phone. Upon opening your messages with Spencer, you couldnât help but be disappointed to find that there was nothing unread. You thought about sending him a text telling him that you all miss him but eventually decided against it. You didnât want to make him feel guilty. At least, no more guilty than he likely already did.
You turned on the TV, quietly playing a Christmas movie as you began the festivities. All of the gifts had been expertly hidden in the master bedroom, split between being shoved under your bed and in your closet, but a new playhouse for the girls had been dropped off earlier. It was too big for your room, so your parents had stored it in their basement in the interim.
That would be a struggle to bring in from the garage, so you decided to start small, pulling all of the kidsâ stockings from their hooks and laying them out on the floor before going upstairs to get the stuffers.
With the movie playing, you filled the stockings with treats and little toys. A few times you imagined your phone buzzing, but each time there was nothing on the screen. The loneliness started to set in as you rehung the stockings, making sure the kidsâ names faced forward above the fireplace.
This wasnât your first Christmas alone, Spencer had been in Idaho for Oliviaâs first Christmas, but neither of the girls remembered it.
Theyâd remember this one, you thought to yourself, walking back up the stairs to grab a load of boxes. Thankfully, they were already wrapped, but you did have to avoid getting ribbon in your mouth as you carried the armful of gifts down the stairs.
Masterfully, you adjusted them beneath the tree, trying to visualize where theyâd all end up in the end as you heard something distantly, but you brushed it off as someone leaving your neighborâs holiday party. You stood up, wiping your hands on your pajamas as you evaluated your handiwork, shrugging before you turned around for the next load, âOh,â you breathed, watching the handle on the door from the garage turn.
The door opened slowly, revealing your husband on the other side, his black peacoat draped over his arm and purple scarf looped around his neck. He hooked his car keys on the key hook before he noticed you, brown eyes finding your pajama-clad figure. His lopsided smile was all-knowing as always, he knew he had surprised you. In fact, it had been his goal.
You remained exactly where you were, watching him from the den as he put his shoes away and hung up his outerwear. It was almost as if youâd convinced yourself he was a mirage, and any sudden movements would cause his visage to dissipate. âHey,â Spencer said, cocking his head at you as if he were confused why you hadnât come any closer to him. He peeked around you to look at the tree, âDid the kids get to bed okay?â
Instead of answering him, your body naturally responded to what seemed like the miraculous appearance of your husband by producing tears. At first, they just welled along your lash line, but as they started to fall, you buried your face in your hands.
Spencer was there, not only in the house but also taking the initiative to approach you, he wrapped his arms around your torso, taking your tearful form under his care, âIs everything alright?â He asked, slowly dragging his hand up and down your spine, humming as you reciprocated his embrace and pressed your face into his shirt, drying your eyes and taking in the moment.
âEverything is wonderful,â you responded, your voice muffled by his shirt. He smelled like stale dark roast and the jet, but you were too relieved by his arrival to truly mind.
Tightening his grip briefly, he pressed a kiss to the crown of your head, âRight, well. Youâre crying, so I had to make sure,â he murmured, swaying gently to the music coming from the film.
You loosed a breath of relief, âI canât believe youâre here. The kids were miserable at bedtime, Nell wouldnât even talk to me until I told her youâll be home for her birthday,â you informed him, keeping your arms wrapped firmly around him while you tipped your head back to see him.
Spencer nodded in understanding, reaching up a hand to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, âWe made the arrest at eight and wrapped up around nine. Somehow, Emily convinced the pilot to leave in the middle of the night, and we were on the jet by ten. Donât get me wrong, Iâve spent holidays in worse places, but Iâd rather be here with you than in Milwaukee.â
âI will kiss Emily Prentiss on the mouth,â you told him candidly.
He raised his brows curiously, âMhm, and what about me?â
Grinning, you pushed up on your tiptoes and pressed your lips to his, an amalgamation of a welcome home and a Merry Christmas kiss, but you pulled away before you could get carried away. âMerry Christmas, Spencer Reid, we have work to do,â you told him, taking on a mock seriousness as you nodded your head toward the Christmas tree, which only had a fraction of your kidsâ gifts beneath it.
âMerry Christmas, darling,â Spencer reciprocated, pressing one more kiss to your lips, âLetâs get started.â
Spinning out of his grip, you found you had much more pep in your step with his arrival, beaming as the two of you went through the house as quietly as possible, gathering the gifts for the kids without rousing any suspicion. Even grabbing the playhouse from the garage didnât seem like as much of a task with him around.
You adjusted the stockings as it neared two in the morning, Spencer returned from upstairs with the last few gifts, having changed his clothes into pajamas that neatly matched yoursâa family set that was a gift from your Penelope. âThey look great,â Spencer assured you, pushing his glasses up on his nose as he stood back, admiring your handiwork.
Walking backward until your back was against your chest, you tilted your head to the side, appraising the mountain of gifts beneath the tree, âDo you think we went overboard this year?â Between the gifts from Santa and the gifts from the two of you, the heap was rather intimidating.
âNo,â Spencer answered, âbigger kids, bigger gifts.â He put his arms around your waist, resting his chin on top of your head, âbesides, theyâre good kids.â
You hummed in response, leaning into him ever so slightly. Part of you felt like Spencer was still experiencing guilt surrounding the three months he spent away from you and the kids while he was in prison. No amount of time at home or therapy would ever absolve him of that guilt, but it never hurt to try, âHey,â you whispered up to him, âI got you something.â
He frowned down at you, âI thought we said no gifts this year?â
Scoffing, you walked over to the home office, âWe say that every year and neither of us ever stick to it, so go get whatever it is you got for me.â
Spencer rolled his eyes, but even so, he made his way upstairs to where you knew a gift was hiding in his bedside table. Upon his return, he faltered at the large box youâd placed on the coffee table and held up the small box in his hands; you beamed at him as he eyed the behemoth of a present.
He handed you the smaller box, instinctively, you admired the wrapping before starting to open it, recognizing the jewelry box before you had even discarded your wrapping paper. âOh, Spence,â you said, looking at the necklace in the box, a dainty chain with five small gemstones on it. His birthstone and yours, followed by Nellâs amethyst, Livvyâs sapphire, and Finnâs tourmaline all strung next to each other, âitâs perfect,â you told him, lightly touching the gems with your fingertips. Youâd mentioned wishing you had an everyday necklace a few weeks ago while getting ready, and he mustâve been listening more attentively than youâd thought.
Finally, you had him open his gift, and he was entirely speechless as he opened the cardboard flaps. His mouth gaped as he lifted one of the books in his hand, the title and edition identical to one that had been previously ruined in your house. âFuck,â he cursed, looking from you to the books and back again.
You shrugged, âItâs not all of them, but a pretty good amount of them. Some of those editions are proving difficult to recover, but Iâveââ Youâre cut off, startled by Spencer pressing his lips to yours. âIâm still looking for some,â you said breathlessly once he pulled away.
Spencer seemed unsure of what to do with himself; youâd managed to find replacements for three-fourths of the books that had previously been burned by an accidental fire set earlier this year. The only time your marriage had ever been on the rocks was when Diana lived with you, but even then, youâd been planning this surprise. âYou areâŚâ Spencer started, uncharacteristically at a loss for words, âThis is incredible,â he told you, shaking his head in disbelief, setting the book down in the box and nearly tackling you in a hug.
Laughing, you buried your face in his shoulder to muffle the sound, âI love you,â you murmured to him, his body now next to yours on the couch.
âI love you too,â he said, looking at you with glassy eyes. âWow,â he said, sniffling, âI need to get you something else. A necklace isnât enough,â he told you, likely already thinking of options for addendums.
You shook your head, âTrust me when I tell you that your being here is worth all of the rare books in the world to me,â you reassured him, running your fingers through his hair. Humming, you adjusted your head on the pillow, âAre you gonna fall asleep like this?â
He nodded, âIf you keep playing with my hair like that. How long do you think we have until they wake up?â He asked, keeping his eyes closed while you peeked over him to check the time.
Last year, Finn had woken up the whole house on Christmas Day at four in the morning, and seeing as it was nearing three, you wondered if it was worth sleeping at all. You continued combing through Spencerâs hair, âDo you want to go upstairs?â
âThis is a really great couch,â he mumbled, already falling asleep on the couch, leading you to grab the blanket that was thrown over the back and haphazardly drape it over the two of you.
Unfortunately, it felt like youâd gotten no sleep at all when you heard the first stirring upstairs, âMommy,â Olivia called out, which would likely wake up Finn and Nell.
You got up from the couch, waking up Spencer in the process. Your poor husband, who was probably already running on little sleep, got up and folded the blanket you had been using, returning it to its home while you went upstairs to get the kids.
Livvyâs eyes went wide when she saw you come from downstairs, âDid Santa come?â She asked you, nearly bouncing with excitement.
As you expected, the door to Eleanorâs room swung open, revealing your sleep-deprived five-year-old in her rumpled pajamas, âYes, Santa brought gifts for everyone,â you answered, ruffling her hair before going into Finnâs room, hoping to wake him gently before the voices did a less delicate job. âHi buddy,â you whispered, looking back to see the girls gathered at the door, completely unaware that their dad was waiting for them downstairs. âMerry Christmas,â you said softly, his scrunched face not processing what you were saying, but happy to see you, nonetheless.
You picked him up from the crib and herded the girls to the stairs, letting them lead the way down while you carried the baby. Right behind them, you watched the realization dawn on their faces as soon as they caught sight of Spencer, âDaddy!â Nell shouted, leading her little sister as they ran to him.
Laughing lightly, you let a squirming Finn down, running to Spencer in the same way the girls just had. From a distance, you watched as all three of your kids entirely bypassed the gifts under the tree and on the mantle and went straight to what was more importantâtheir father was home for Christmas.
Spencer crouched down to get Finn, and at the same time, Livvy jumped in excitement, leaving Spencer falling backward and sitting on the ground while the kids formed a less-than-graceful dog pile on the floor. You took that as your cue to join in on the festivities, kneeling on the floor next to the familial pile, uncontrollable giggles emanated from everyone involved.
You wrangled the two littles in your arms, giving each of them dozens of kisses and receiving more laughter in return as Eleanor settled down. Your eldest took her moment of alone time and laid her head on Spencerâs chest, the grin on her face overtook the rest of her face, âBest Christmas ever,â she whispered before rolling off of him, Spencer instinctively lifting his hand so she doesnât hit her head on the leg of the coffee table.
Nellie sat up giving you a toothy grin, sticking her tongue through where she was missing a front tooth. Everyone took notice of Olivia pointing at the tree, her mouth shaped like an âoâ in awe, âCan we open that one?â She asked, pointing to the largest present in the stackâwhich, of course, had her name on it.
âStockings first,â Spencer said, leading to a pout from your middle child, but it was quickly wiped away when he kissed the crown of her head. Your husband got up first, taking Finn from where he was tucked into your side, and set him on his hip, âOkay, who wants their stocking?â
Everyoneâs hand went upâincluding yours.

The Water You Drown
Pairing: Shadow! Azul Ashengrotto x Reader x Jade Leech
Summary: Your beloved husband has died, leaving you to be wedded to his friend due to a suspicious contract. No amount of insults seems to deter Jade from wiggling his affections into your every waking moment. In your grief, you miss Azul, but it seems his shadow misses you even more, doing whatever it takes to make you drown with him. [9k words]

You stand atop your once-alive husband, the pristine stone darkening with each raindrop that lands on its surface. Leaning down, your fingers gently trace over the letters with adoration, a sense of grief washing over you.
The rain is cold, but the feeling of mourning has always been even colder.
When you finish grazing the engravement, you draw a heart with your fingertip.
In loving Memory, Azul Ashengrotto, Beloved husband and friend
You slowly stand to your full height, dusting off dirt from your lap, you let the rain hit you, each droplet increasing in strength. Yet, you donât have the will in you to cover yourself, deeply believing, or rather⌠hoping, that this rain is Azuls spirit reaching out to you from beyond the grave.
A gentle smile grazes your lips, yes, this must be him. He always insisted you visit the sea with him. You never did agree though, having duties to tend to day in and day out. But, you close your eyes, imagining each assault on your skin to be sea water splashing you.
This visage is broken when the rain suddenly pauses, a gentle hand finding its place on your shoulder. Gentle, yet you canât help but find this man's touch akin to a roseâs thorn.
âItâs cold, perhaps you should find solace in our house, Mrs.Leech?â you donât open your eyes, continuing to bask in the sound of hushed splashes. You allow for Jade's suggestion to go unanswered, your newly found fiance only laughing at the silence.
A fiance you never wished for. You were thrust into his possession due to Azuls will, a letter stating his last wish to be his right hand taking his place as your lover.
Why would he ever wish for such a thing? You thought he loved you, lavishing you in desires so sought over just to make you happy⌠Why would he ever promise you to such a⌠Deceitful man?
Yet, you canât argue. The contract was composed entirely of Azuls writing, his signature only further instilling this truth.
âNo, I should like to stay.â you finally peek through your eyelids, glancing at Jade before turning to his gloved limb, firmly swiping him off you, dusting the area off as if a pest had been there. But thatâs not too far from the truth, is it?
âIs that so? But, it is cold. You will garner illness.â
âI said no, forgive me my lord but must you stay here? I wish for mourning towards my husband.â
âDear, he is not your husband, I am. Surely,â he pauses, another one of his gratingly deep chuckles wafting the clean air, âYou cannot be promised to a dead man.â
âHe is not dead.â He is, but you wonât give him the satisfaction of giving up your beloved husband.
âI assure you, any man buried in the ground Is considered dead.â Jade continues, his smiling seeming ever continuous like his muscles have contracted to forever hold their shape.
âAh, so you will be dead very soon, how wondrous!â you promised since Azuls death you would never smile for another man, but promises arenât as binding as curses are they?
âIf it is you who puts me under, I believe Iâll die a happy man.â
â⌠You have sullied this moment.â
âDonât worry, I shall love you forevermore, even if you may have been ruined by another man.â his smile still doesnât falter. If you could, you would jump at the chance to cut up his pretty face.
Alas, such wants can never be fulfilled because if it is true Azul wished for you to be with his⌠Right-hand man (Though youâre not too sure as Azul would complain about his unique persona day in and out) then⌠you should wish to be with Jade as well.
Because you love Azul. Ever since you were arranged to marry him. Well, at least you think thatâs the case.
You reply to his retort with but a sigh, turning back to look solemnly at the words etched into stone, a cruel reminder of the man you once had.
Jade sticks his arm out, signaling you to interlock yours with his own, but this act is met with a huff. Your shoes click against the pavement as you speed away, uncaring for the rain that falls into your eyes, the liquid only further covering the tears youâve shed.
It has only been a few months, but you can tell it will feel like centuries.
You endlessly toss and turn in the sheets of your bed, the unnerving hand of the slimy man⌠no eel. He must be one with how slimy he is curling around your waist. Heâs pulling you in with a strength so ironclad you canât pull away.
Itâs unfortunate when you get home from the cemetery, the separate bed you had arranged in a room far far away from Jades, had been mysteriously tossed away. Jade claims a peg mustâve been lost, as when he came home the mattress had been tilted.
Itâs a lie, you checked your bedding the morning of and no such thing existed.
âAm I some sort of commodity? Why wonât this man unhand me...?!â Youâre sure this leech is awake, you havenât been whispering any of your words.
You stop fighting his grasp, only loosely relaxing in his hold, yet not at all. Your eyes are fixated on one object, and one object alone.
A shell necklace made of pure gold.
Its light glimmers in the dark, a stark contrast to the everlasting black you find yourself in.
Soft snores finally begin to resonate through your room, a signal to Jade's final slumber. But, youâve lost all will to escape him, youâre too tired and grieved to do such a thing. Itâs only when you blink do you realize you still have tears left to cry.
âAzulâŚâ Your words are hushed, so much so not even a mouse could hear your pleas. âWhy must you have gone to sea⌠Was I not equal to the worth of land you bought?â your fingers reach up to wipe your tears, before pausing.
The necklace is no longer there.
The shock mustâve been the reason you needed to break free from Jade, as the sight immediately has you breaking his arms apart with a newfound determination.
Itâs improper to bed out of bed with your sleepwear only, but you do not care, at this point, youâd much be naked than without that necklace.
âAre you looking for something? I believe I had all of Azuls stuff moved to a storage building of mine.â What? How would he even know you were looking forâŚ? It doesnât matter.
âNo, I lost⌠Never mind go back to sleep you rake.â
âI believe I am plenty married.â He leans up from the bed, the blanket falling off and revealing his bare torso.
âIs that so? I feel horrible for your spouse.â
âSelf-pity isnât good for oneâs health.â You scoff at his words before lighting a candle, not daring to answer his obvious jabs at your conscience. You leave the room without a sound, wandering the halls of the newfound house you find yourself in.
Each wall looks the same, obnoxiously elegant. At this rate, youâll never find the whereabouts of thatâ
A quick shadow passes your peripherals, a gust of wind blowing your nightwear into the air, and in turn, the light of your candle.
âWhoâs there? If itâs you, Floyd, I already told you I donât want to wed you, and neither did I wish to be wedded to Jade!â No answer, only the sound of slimy liquid splashing.
Slimy liquids?
You turn the corner quickly, not even bracing yourself for whatever possible sight could appear. Yet, your lack of awareness is lucked out, all thatâs left is a golden coin, one part of Azul's special collection. There was nothing special about it however, if anything, it is one of the few antiques that are essentially worthless.
But he found riches in the sole pence simply because you picked it up, claiming it to be luck.
You lean down with your fingers, picking the coin up with a certain care. It is still as pretty as the day you found it.
âMine.â The voice immediately makes your shoulders tense, not daring to look back at its owner. The voice is aquatic, a certain echo sounding like the creature is underwater.
Should you run? Do you run? All these suggestions that should be commands run rampant through your mind, but the feeling of a wet tentacle wrapping its suction cups around your waist halts all ideas.
âMine. You have something that is mine.â The coin, it must be the coin. You donât turn your head, keeping your eyes pinned on the imaginary target on your floors. You lift your hand, the pence wedged between your fingers.
âHere, itâsâŚâ you realize something. This piece⌠Your necklace is gone, who knows where itâs gone? This antique, you must keep it. âNot yours.â
âI wasnât talking about the coin,â The voice that comes out this time is not nearly as echoed, the sound coming out the clearest itâs ever been. âAngelfish.â
It canât⌠not itâs notâŚ! But what if itâŚ?
You look down at the dark shadow matter that holds your waist, a second one coming to wrap around your thighs underneath your nightwear. No⌠your Azul was never a shadowâŚ!
âMy husband was⌠is human, you can not be him.â The tentacles increase their grip on your skin.
âDonât say such mean things dear, youâll hurt my feelings.â Itâs only when the feeling of hair tickling your face, and a pair of real hands wrap around your waist in tandem with the tentacles, do you smell something so familiar.
Sea salt.
Your head finally turns around, your eyes making contact with the man youâve missed so much.
âAzul.â He looks different, no⌠He is different. There are faint traces of purple on his transparent body. Several tentacles flail about behind him, all seeming to have a mind of their own. But the most noticeable thing is his change in size, heâs practically three times bigger than before.
Yet, you think itâs Azul.
âMy, is my charm still as captivating as it was when we wedded?â it takes you a while to register the fact you're feet are no longer touching the ground, your bottom half cold and wet as you sit on his thick tendrils. âI hope so, youâre still just as incomparable.â
You feel yourself struggle in balance with the continuous moving of his muscles, your hands finding refuge on his neck as you hug him tightly, the fear of falling being your sole reason.
âAzul, I do not wish to perish so soonâŚ! Please⌠please put me downâŚ!â
âSo you can return to your new half?â thereâs a certain firmness in his voice when he replies, a tone that was previously not there. âHave you moved on so quickly? I am still here and alive if you canât see.â those words⌠Does this false image of Azul believe you to be baggage?
âPardon? I know not what you speak. I have never exchanged whispers with that⌠thatâŚ! Conniving eel!â
âCalm down dear, I know that. You would never.â
âYes, I would never.â you parrot. But, thereâs a certain ache that is realized inside you, taking the form of an even bigger pain when you utter the words you say. âBut, I must return soon.â
âYou said you wouldnât.â
âI never said that.â Itâs the unfortunate truth, to have to tuck yourself back into the bedside of a man you donât love. It makes you wonder though, why did he jump to marrying you?
Youâre not broke, if you were, your marriage to Azul wouldâve never come to be. But, youâre not rich either. If rumors youâve heard hold truth, Jade was meant to marry someone with far greater wealth than you.
So why
âI see,â Azul utters with hushed breath. You sigh with relief, ready to thank him with the happiest of smiles.
âThank you. Do not worry I shall return Azulââ
âNo.â
âŚ
Huh?
Transparent tendrils grow behind him, swiftly making their way towards your face. The suction cups gently graze your cheek before pulling away, confusion evident on your face. His face is dark, not from the shadows that shroud him, the expression on his face.
A blissful smile.
The last thing you feel is the hardwood against your head.
The lone duke reaches to his side, his hands groggily searching for the body of his dearly, though you wouldnât agree, beloved. His eyes peek open when thereâs nothing to grasp.
He wakes to an empty bedside, but heâs more so bothered by the lack of a warm body in his arms. Have you not returned from your midnight excursion? How interesting, he recalls a distant (not at all distant, in truth, only yesterday) memory of your preference to sleep as much as possible.
âWhy must you wake me so early? I prefer staying in slumber to never see your horribly handsome face.â
âOh? You think me handsome?â
âUnfortunately, but itâs all the better when I smuggle that pretty accessory with a pillow.â
âMy my, please wait till we have an heir in you.â
â⌠I despise how you turn my acts of violence into such crude subjects.â
He upturns from the bed, groggily blinking with exhaustion only youâve been present to witness. Itâs one of the few moments heâs unguarded and not accompanied by a cunning smile.
He looks out the window and realizes, itâs still night, but the coming of day emerges with the lightening blue sky. He canât help but wonder, where are you?
You could be downstairs, preparing food for yourself (You never did enjoy tasking his servants despite their willingness to assist you.), or maybe youâve taken a stroll in his gardens. No, thatâs not it⌠you claim his mushrooms to be a disturbing sight (He knows youâre only saying that to attack his heart. He sees you secretly tending to the fungi when he does not have the chance.).
Or perhaps youâve run away. He certainly canât have that.
He throws the covers off, walking to his closet, and allowing his naked torso to be covered with a dress shirt. He opens his door, a vigor in his lighting. This determination extinguishes when he spots you on the floor, your nightwear disheveled with circular bruises imprinted on your skin.
His lithe frame slows him to reach you in a few steps, scooping your unconscious body into his arms effortlessly. A low whisper sounds from behind him, threatening yet the way the voice trails is akin to a corrupt spirit.
âJade⌠YouâŚâ He turns, his mismatched eyes locking with the vicinity he heard it from. But thereâs nothing to be seen, only a pathetically desolate corner of the room.
At least, thatâs what heâll tell you. He knows he wonât ever mention to you the dark shadow that glares at him from a corner before disappearing.
He canât help but feel that envied voice sounding much too familiar to his late friend.
Itâs been a week since you last saw the shadow that calls itself your Azul.
Youâre conflicted on whether heâs telling the truth and he is indeed your late husband whoâs come from beyond the grave. He has the coin heâs always treasured. Itâs the same one, down to the tiny scratches on its surface.
You know itâs not just your thoughts playing tricks on you either, the dark marks on your thighs and arms are proof enough.
Youâre not sure when Jade found you, but youâre sure itâs when he found you, that âAzulâ had disappeared. Is he perhaps a creature only you can see? No matter how much you ask Jade about what he saw, he refuses to divulge any details to you.
Goodness, youâve even stooped to bargaining and begging! Entirely unbefit to someone in your position.
âPlease. You must. I beg of you.â
âYour pleas are far sweeter than any wine Iâve tasted.â You wince at his words, stressing your face to not show any signs of distaste.
â⌠I will willingly stroll the town with you.â
âI see. I agree to your terms.â For once, and the only time, you smile at Jade, taking his hands in yours and lifting them to your cheek with the countenance of a true lover rather than an arranged one.
âSo what do you know from the night of? Did you witness it? Hear it? You must tell me!â
âI know nothing. There was only a bug.â You roughly throw his hands away from your body, brushing him off like a leech.
âI wish to be married to the man who was courting me before you. Can I? It must not be too late.â Riddle, a bright suitor. He was kind to you. You like him much more than this man.
âAh, Rosehearts, a fine choice. Unfortunately, youâre not wealthy enough for his mother, and married, twice.â You slouch back in your chair, a form utterly lacking in grace. All the servants will be sure to whisper of your strained relationship with the Duke.
âAt this point, the Leech family will have to use that mad twin of his for an heir, the Floyd mister. Those two will never consummateâŚâ
A sudden clatter of plates catches both of your focus, your heads turning in unison to look at the shattered porcelain on the ground. Youâre unsure if Jade catches it, but the faint trace of shadow tells you exactly who caused the ruckus.
âYouâre unbearable countenance has left me ill. Iâm taking my leave.â For once, Jade doesnât reply to you with a witty comeback. This shift makes you wonder if you should be more worried about that rather than âAzulâ, but you refrain from asking.
You sneak away from Jade's grasp in the night, closing the door with a silence that seems impossible. The lights are the only illumination besides the moon's rays.
âAzul? Are you here? Iâm⌠not mad about last time. Please come out to me.â
Silence.
You clasp your hands, sitting on the cold flooring of the house, a shiver going down your spine. A makeshift protest it is, you will sit here for hours until this thing reveals itself to you.
âYou never liked it when I slept. So, I shall dream right hereâ You feel foolish for this display. Not even so much as a tentacle reaches out to you. Are you doing this for nothing? Is there no pointâ
A sudden tendril emerges from the wall behind you, finding its place on your waist before the rest of them takes hold of other parts of your body. Your weight is once again lifted in the air, cradled in a heap of muscle.
âShall I help you wake?â
So his words are lies. This is not the Azul you know and love. Even in moments where he struggled to pass into dreams, he always made an effort to lull you to bed.
âŚ
âAzul⌠Itâs okay. The servants are sleeping, we shouldn't disturb them.â You rub your heavy eyes, and despite their weight, they just canât allow you to sleep peacefully, even in the comfort of your mattress. You lean up, ready to leave the bed.
âThen Iâll serve you tonight.â your husband's voice is soft as if he isn't nearly as tired as you. No⌠heâs even more exhausted. He can hide it but youâve engraved his being into your soul. Azul follows in your wake, the blanket falling down his form as he leans on his elbows.
Plus, he tends to snack late at night when he canât sleep. The several tiny empty plates tell you all you need to know.
âThatâs unneeded.â you place your hand on his chest, tenderly laying him back onto the bedding.
âMost needed.â he grabs your hand and sits back up again. âSeeing you well is a comfort. You want me to sleep as well right? Iâll only do so if you fall first.â truly⌠your husband is much too clingy.
âŚ
Despite the hue of night outside your window, the harsh hail that drops from the sky reminds you of your entrapment. If you could leave this beast, would you even be able to leave this house?
This version of Azul has closed the distance between you two, his glowing cerulean eyes staring deep into yours. Youâd confuse the hand that cups your cheek for Azuls if it wasnât so cold.
âI was kidding angelfish, I could never allow you to harm yourself in such a way.â Youâre able to control your face despite the shock. So then is he your Azul or not? Itâs too late when you finally look to the side. Grotesque tentacles surround you from all sides, essentially trapping you to the floor.
But the thought of Azul distracts you from the impending danger. You should care, you really should in the scenario this isnât your husband. But the tiny sliver of hope that emerges feeds into your delusions.
âDonât cry.â You didnât know you were. Azul hushes your sniffles, petting your head as he brings you into his chest. âThere will be no tears for you to shed when we leave here.â Neither do you know what he speaks of, but you nod, eager to fall into the arms of your husband.
He lifts your head from his body, the lone smile he reserved for you especially, adorning his shadowed lips. The closer you look at it though, it doesnât quite reach his eyes, neither do they look genuine.
But you donât mind. This is your Azul, it must be. No false intimidation of him could ever care for you with such adoration.
He leans in without your notice, his freezing lips only inches away from yours.
âWe will leave this horrible house together.â His grip is tight, but does that matter? The ink that bleeds into your skin in all but a warm embrace.
âŚ
Ink?
Youâre about to turn your head down to look at the liquid, but before you can a strong grip holds onto your cheeks, squishing The fat together. Azul's forehead is rested on yours, the smile held for you no longer on his face, but rather the one for his clients. A smug smile of scheming.
âI promised I'd help you wake upââ
The sound of doors slamming open immediately draws his attention. He looks between you and the source of the sound, his face contorted with annoyance. His face quickly leans into yours, ready to enact the once-tender act of love. The sight of a light distracts him, a silent tut leaving him before disappearing into the shadows.
Your breaths are heavy at the release of pressure on your face. Your hands can barely hold up your body weight, theyâre practically about to give up on themselves.
âShrimpy? Whatcha doinâ on the floor.â it's been so long since youâve seen Floyd, that you almost confused him for Jade, save for the unique manner of speech he has. It stands out among those in proper society. But it doesnât matter.
You jump up from your place on the floor, hugging him with a swiftness you shouldnât be so eager to do. But truthfully, if this was Jade youâre sure you wouldâve hugged him just as tight, which is why itâs for the best it was Floyd and not him. Anyone but him.
âWhat? You excited to see me? What do yah say to ditchinâ Jade and kissinâ me steadâ yeah?â his firm arm wraps around you, picking you up with ease to spin you around. It may be night but with him around it must be the lightest it could possibly be. âIs what he wouldâve said had he been here.â Your arms immediately fall at the tone shift.
Youâve been deceived, this is Jade.
You pinch his cheek from the vulnerable state he saw you in, a part of yourself you refused to ever bless him with. Even then⌠itâs hard to get out of his hold, heâs practically trying to merge with your own body.
âDo you take pride in watching me panicked? A very unfit trait for a husbandâŚâ you grit your teeth, but he continues to hold you like an ever-so-fawning husband. Even the way he grazes your face with the back of his hand is tender. He must be mocking you.
âNo⌠Perhaps. But I do take pride in watching you live.â
âThen pretend Iâm dead.â
âThen, I shall be the prince in the story who kisses you awake from that deep slumber.â Youâre reaching to tug at the annoying asymmetric strand of hair on his head, but pause when the sight of cerulean eyes stare back at you from the shadows. The corner of the hall is desolate from the light of Jade's lamp, entirely untouched and untainted by its purity.
Youâre about to point out the existence of the fiend to Jade but stop just shy when a familiar sight invades Azuls fingers.
The golden conch necklace. Its sheen glows despite the shadows.
The piece is just as beautiful as the day it was gifted to you. The face behind the jewelry, however, is much different. Rather than jovial at his present like before, a shadow overcasts his face, everything invisible except for his lone glowing irises.
âIs something the matter?â Jade tilts his head, his face ready to turn before you stop him. Itâs a disgustingly affectionate act to hold his face in your hands, but itâs a must. âOh myâŚâ
âLet's go to sleep.â
âAre you ill? This is the first youâve ever been willing. MyâŚâ Jade feigns worry as he rests his hand on your forehead. âWell, itâs only standard for me to care for you.â You swat your hand at him in response, yet an ironclad hold doesnât set you free from him.
âDonât test it.â He smiles, and youâre sure heâs about to open his mouth and annoy you. Seconds go by in silence, his large frame sticking his elbow out, pleasantly proving you wrong.
You take a single glance back, the octopus of shadows no longer sat in the lonely corner, only empty space. You hope when you turn around Jade and his jovial countenance will be gone from sight. Youâre unfortunately provenâ
⌠Right?
You slowly turn your head, looking in every direction for where your husband couldâve possibly disappeared. To no avail, thereâs only air where he once occupied.
âJade?â Since when did the manor become so cold? Your arms rub your skin, finding a way to save your body heat. The lack of response is only a further panic, he never does shut up. But even then, youâre starting to miss the grating silky voice he has.
You step forward, the floor is cooler than it was just a few moments ago. And⌠Itâs wet too; itâs covered in a layer of seawater, bits of seaweed, and small fish floating in the body of liquid.
â⌠Azul?â thereâs a faint hiccup that echoes through the hall, a sound youâre unfamiliar with. Well, sorta. This tone sounds familiar but youâveâŚ
It sounds like Azul, but youâve never heard him cry before. Was he ever capable of that? He was more suave when courting you. Even during your marriage.
You drag your feet through the water, your nightwear wetting itself with each movement. You allow the weeping to guide your way, getting closer and closer to its source.
You were right.
You turn the corner and are greeted by the giant octopus, hunched over in a corner. His tentacles wave the water around, causing waves to form; all of them hitting you back with every attempt you make to get closer.
âAzulâŚ! Whatever are youâŚ?!â Despite the dark cloak of shadow covering his face, his eyes peak between the fingers enveloping his face.
âDo you love Jade now?â The hollow tone in his voice conflicts with the looks in his pupils. Pure envy. You donât answer his question. But, this is entirely your fault. Youâre not silent because itâs the truth. Youâre quiet because how could this creature with your husband's face think such a thing?
âAzul⌠Thatâs notââŚ!â Youâre not given the choice to retort when the feeling of cold-soaked fingers covers your mouth. Even with the distance he didnât use those tentacles. Though youâre relieved he didnât; the way they thrash around in the water tells you if he did, you wouldnât have the chance to reply to him.
Youâre ready to claw your upper half away from him, but pause when the sounds of wheezed laughs leave him. Another thing you donât remember Azul ever doing.
Just further proof, this thing only has his face. No part of your true husband resides in him.
Or⌠maybe itâs the opposite. Maybe Azul was always like this.
âAhaa⌠AhhâŚhaaâŚ!â His pupils dilate at the last exhale, pulling you into him with a force that crashes your head into his chest, âEven here you fall for him.â His arms wrap around you, the hug much more tender than the suction cups that curl around your bottom half. âItâs okay⌠I still love you, much more than Jade.â
What is he talking
You donât realize the way the air in your lungs dissipates, the water rising with each second, further engulfing you in his overwhelming obsessions. Not affection, obsession.
Your Azul would never drown you like this.
ââŚYou canât be Jades if youâre mine first.â Itâs too late to get out of his hold now. The sea is much too terrifying when itâs around you. You donât feel air in your lungs, but you donât suffocate, if anything, you canât suffocate. âItâs okay angelfish,â His voice is muffled, fingers steadily crawling up your neck until his finger reaches your lips, resting his forehead on yours, âYour husband shall care for you now, not that eel.â
Tears well in your eyes, but not from the pain. Itâs from this thing saying such sweet things to you. You have to keep telling yourself⌠This man isnât Azul. Itâs not⌠You have to come to termsâŚ!
Azuls mouth connects to yours, bubbles escaping you from the contact. He continues to exchange his affection into your lips, greedily quaffing your air like itâs his, his to breathe in.
Itâs not how your husband kissed you, he kissed you with a gentleness akin to a flower. Heâs kissing you as if he intends to swallow you whole, not allowing your love to be anyone elses.
Yet, a moment passes and youâre returning each kiss with a fever.
Heâs not Azul. Itâs not Azul. Itâs not your Azul. Azul. AzulâŚ!
In some miracle, you break your arms out of his tentacle hold, wrapping those freed limbs around him. You donât notice the way youâre not even breathing anymore, too focused on each lipped exchange you have with Azul.
âNow Jade canât have you. Youâve been ruined.â You were always ruined, ever since he left. Even now as you act so indulgently with the creature with Azuls face, youâve been ruined.
But you know Jade wouldnât care.
âYou and Azul acted on your wedding night? Oh, dear⌠Hm? You thought me to be worried? Oh my, itâs quite the opposite⌠WhyâŚ? Well simply put, Iâll show you how much better I am.â
âWe will drown together angelfish.â
It doesnât matter. This thing is the closest to Azul youâll ever be again, you have to savor itâŚâ!
A tiny ray of light shines through the murky water, hitting Azul right in the eye. He falls back, clutching his eye, hissing through swollen lips. Your falls back into the water, a moment of stupor clouding your judgment before swimming away. What couldâve done that to him?
And what made you wish to stay?
You turn around, curious about the purification that suddenly hit him, and with it, your common sense. You were⌠indulging a demon. A shadow.
Your eyes glance at the projection, a window, stunningly showcasing the sun-rise that emerges. Azul continues to hiss, his ghostly form fizzing in the water. In a last-ditch effort, he extends his arm to you, his other limbs seemingly unconscious as they lay still.
But before he reaches you, your eyes flutter shut. Oxygen is no longer your savior, but perhaps a cross might be better.
A hand grabs onto your shoulder.
Your body feels dry, warm if anything. It must be the candles Jade has lit around you. Even then, perhaps you never were in the water to begin with. The sight of a soft blue invades your vision. Right, your shared bedroom with the leech.
âDo be careful, it makes no good for your recovery if you continue to act like a fish out of water.â Jade's body emerges from the door, long legs striding over to take his spot next to your bed.
âJadeâŚâ Thereâs a certain tenderness in your voice that makes him tense, but he resumes as if it never happened.
âYour voice sounds sweet. Perhaps I should keep you bedridden all the time.â Heâs back to being coy. But you donât have the energy to keep up. He stays silent when you do. He knows somethingâs wrong with the way your eyes stare longingly, even more so when you take his gloved hand like you would a lover.
He knows thereâs something wrong, yet he canât bring himself to do anything. If he did, you wouldnât return his affections like you are right now, would you? Plus, why ever would he wish to shorten such a sight, you never let him this close.
You never let him look into your eyes for too long. Theyâre a beautiful enchanting hue, he wishes youâll let them see them more often.
On your face of course. Though, if things ever become drastic, a jar wouldnât be a bad option either.
âŚ
You think you wanna run away. Far from here, you know it will follow through, forevermore youâre sure.
That thing, it dared to take advantage of you and implement fond memories, make you believe it was Azul. Monsters are horrific, but liars are much crueler.
âJade you have other estates to live in, correct?â
âI do.â He rubs his thumb over your skin.
âAllow us to sanction ourselves there thenâ
âYou canât flee from a shadow dear.â
â⌠I⌠What are you speaking aboutâŚ? Jade?â He doesnât reply, only allowing his prophecy to implement itself into your veins. You shake his arm, attempting to make him spill more of his nonsense, but he doesnât. He only smiles at you before gently taking your hand and placing a kiss on your bare skin.
He leaves the room with more questions asked than answered.
âJade LeechâŚ!â Your voice comes out gurgled, bubbles popping out rather than air. ââŚ?!â
Salt water stings your vision, but in the tiny blear you have, something odd swims in front of the portrait at your feet. A large painting forcibly commissioned by Jade, where youâre sat on a throne adorned with different seashells and coral. Thatâs the only good thing about the portrait, for that throne was something of Azuls that you pressured Jade into letting you keep.
Your pupils trail down Jade's figure, reaching his hips, where a shadow covers his legs, making his limbs look to be one long tail.
âŚ
The eel swims away the moment you start analyzing it.
You jump up from the bed, your blanket floating aimlessly in the air as you swim toward the painting, taking hold of the golden frame adorning its edges. Your fingers tighten their grip on the intricate detailing at your newfound findings.
Thereâs a faint reflection of grey hair in the decor of your chair.
Youâre about to punch a hole through the canvas, already working to raise your fist at the cloth. When you finally throw your limb, youâre only stopped by knuckle meeting solid gold.
Limbs wrap around the string of the conch necklace, dark purple, accompanied by the feeling of a cheek nuzzling into your own.
âI found where Jade left this.â Any chance of fleeing is already taken from you, as tentacles grab hold of your legs. When you turn youâre met by Azul, a much softer look than what he had when you last saw him. âMm, Iâm sorry, Angelfish. I didnât mean it, I would never truly hurt you.â
How is he back again?
You continue to only stare at the beastly version of your husband. No⌠your ex-husband, for Azul, is no longer in the land of the living.
And this pathetic replication of him will never live up to your true Azul.
âWonât you forgive me?â he trails kisses up your neck when you fail to smile at him, or even touch him. âI found your gift, I hope you still like it.â He rocks you in the water, a familiar action Azul would do in private.
You reply minimally, only nodding along with whatever nonsense he spouts, all for you to understand the only questions in your mind.
What is this fiend? And how does it continue to appear in your home?
These two questions only continue to eat away at you with each twirl in the water. Truthfully, this seems like a scene you could only dream of, itâs so soft and so pretty. But you canât bring yourself to enjoy the moment.
Your thoughts stop when you feel The mid-water waltz come to a halt. The grasp on your legs tightens once more, as he dips you down, forehead finding refuge on yours.
âAre you ready to leave now?â You choke on water.
No⌠NoâŚ!
âIt seems we are, let's go then, Angelfish.â The cruel copy of Azul smiles lovingly at you while you struggle in his hold, air bubbles popping out your throat as you try to scream underwater.
Youâd die⌠Youâd rather die than destroy Azul's love for you by eloping with this evil tempter.
How How?! How in bloody hell do you rid yourself of him?!
Shadow-made tendrils begin to make their way across your vision, covering any chance of a plan you have. Despite your struggle, he shushes you like one would comfort a child.
Youâre starting to feel your conscience fade away into his palms, your defeat inevitable.
Until you feel your curtains graze your fingers. Your hand weakly grabs a handful of the fabric. Will you even be able to pull this giant thing off? You can barely moveâŚ!
Despite your reservations, you try. You feel his thumb trace over your lips, a single tap acting like a kiss.
âŚ
You bite his thumb.
He jumps back, still holding you. But, itâs enough force for you to yank the curtain down, light quickly stabbing its way through the water. The rays puncture his purple skin, his eyes widening as he quickly tries to drag you back into him. In his weakened state, the moment he pulls you close enough, you kick your legs into his stomach, pushing yourself away from him.
âNoâŚ! No! You didnât! [Name]! Come back here! COME BACK!â
You swim as quickly as you can to the door, busting through its hinges. You donât look back to see if heâs gone or not.
âŚ
That only worked because it was day. You didnât even know if there was sun.
âJadeâŚ?â you stand up on trembling legs, looking around the vast halls of his estate. âJade?!â You sound pathetic right now, but you need him.
Itâs the only way you wonât die by that thing's hands.
âJadeâ?!â your desperation finally begins to seep through, each shout of his name dripping with fear. Youâre on the verge of tears with your last ask. âJade, where the bloody hell are youâ?!â
âIâm right here.â your head turns towards his voice. âMy, are you a masochist dear? It does seem like you enjoy pain much more than anyone else in societyââ You run up to him, willingly letting yourself envelop him in a hug, pulling his neck towards you as your arms wrap around him.
âJade⌠Donât leave again.â Youâve forgotten his last statement before he left, the rage no longer resides in you for that. For a moment, Jade's hand hovers over you, before he finally allows himself to indulge.
âI do hope this is not another attempt at subduing me with your affection.â
âAre you saying if I tried that it might work?â
âUnfortunately, not might, would.â You donât reply to him, only tightening your wrap around his figure. You wonder why he doesnât question the fact you are soaked in salt water.
âWhen you asked me not to leave you again, I do admit, I thought you would be following me around rather than me pursuing you.â your fingers flip through dust pages as Jade sits at your side. He wouldn't dare to annoy you so heavily this time, for itâs the first time you've let him sit only a few inches away from you. So close he can hear each breath you make.
Itâs lovely.
âWell, if you have an issue I can always request Floyd to come over. He looks enough like you that I can pretend he is you.â Jade smiles through his pointed teeth, opening his mouth to retort before you cut him off,â Though, I already like him much more, so I donât believe I have to.â You donât look at him, but you smile knowing Jadeâs once sadistic smile has become much more strained.
âWas it not you who begged me not to go?â Itâs your turn to strain a smile. âIt was like a sweet delicacy to my ears, much better than any cries from a brothel.â
âHa, do you wish me to accompany you to such an obscenity? I do regret to inform you that I am not that kind of spouse.â
âWell then, itâs good I donât wish to act on such desires, for theyâre all reserved for you and you exclusively.â you roll your eyes at your husband, ready to reply to such a tempting statement. You pause when your eyes scan over the words youâve been looking for.
Ombre: A shadowed figure that resides with those of the recently grieving. They appear to manifest through the belongings of the departed. There have been some cases where all items are gone but the beast remains. These are especially heinous for they can be entirely regular humans. Though, for a majority, your best chance of purification is to rid yourself of such objects.
âŚ
Your fingers snake around the golden conch at your neck, your eyes furrowing at the writing. For a moment, you look down at the surface, the shine glimmering in the light.
For a moment, only a single moment, you can see Azul in its reflection. A cruel reminder of the love who gave you something so near to your heart.
âŚ
You grab Jade's gloved fingers, mismatched eyes staring intently at the way you take hold of him. His face leans in, his forehead pressed on yours⌠You bring his hand to your chest, wrapping his fingers around Azuls necklace, tightening his grip. You allow him to continue resting his head on yours.
If you close your eyes, you can pretend heâs Azul. So, you close your eyes.
âPleaseâŚâ you whisper, soft, so soft not even the dust in the air could hear you, but only Jade. âAzul, save me.â
Jade stays silent at the name you say. His free gloved hand finds itself on your cheek, wiping away the tear that trails down your face. You donât see him take his thumb and lick the salt from your cries.
âOf course I will, Angelfish.â
Your cries increase with the sound of each crack resonating at your chest. Before you, your beloved parting gift from Azul is but golden shards and memories.
You finally open your eyes, ready to collect each piece to melt and send them far away. Youâre met by Jade still pressing himself against you, not Azul.
âThis is the part where you tell me Iâm heinous, to get off you before I sully your clothes with my slimy countenance.â He hopes youâll tell him to get off, to leave before the sensation of his supposed heart beating in his chest kills him.
âIâll move when you do, Jade.â his inhale gets caught in his throat. The feeling of consuming you whole embeds itself into him, hands reaching out to wrap themselves around you.
They stop when he sees the way you look at the broken necklace.
âŚ
Jade removes himself from your comfort, grabbing a pot and delicately plucking each one from your skin.
âIt seems itâs time to gift Floyd. Iâm sure heâll be overjoyed at the knowledge itâs from you.â you look down at the broken conch once more, before nodding.
You turn back and forth in your bed, Jade sleeping peacefully right next to you despite your unrest. Youâve ridden yourself of almost every single gift and belonging youâve still retained of Azuls.
Except one.
The damned antique coin of Azuls.
You throw the covers off, taking candlelight in hand. Truly⌠where could it have gone? You glance back at Jade, still slumbering completely fine in your bed.
Itâs when you think back to your first meeting with that thing, do you remember where it is.
In the darkest corner of Jadeâs estate.
The only good thing is that itâs a mere few feet away from your bedroom. You turn towards your doors, your forehead resting on its wood. The flame from the candle you hold flickers, a symbol of your wavering fear.
If you donât get that coin, who knows when that ombre will decide to reappear again?
Your hands linger on the doorknob, a moment of hesitation striking you. You push through this fear, turning the handle and swinging the door open, the force blowing your clothes.
The false Azul is at the end of the hallway.
You shut the door swiftly, the slam resonating through your ears as you barricade the door with your body.
âBloody hellâ Jade! Jade wake upâ!â youâre no longer met with the sight of your bed, neither Jade. Only a curtainless window allowing the light of the moon in,
And your dead husband's shadow.
âI love you.â its face no longer holds remnants of the love it showed before, completely expressionless as it looks down at you. The light from the moon backdrops it, the only light coming from its body being its eyes.
Its entirely shadow, the only part of Azul left in it being his eyes, and that hoarse voice.
âYouâŚ! Youâre not Azul⌠Stop defacing him!â
The shadow moves its tentacles, scooting closer to your form. You can see a glint on its face, tear streaks.
âDo you love Jade now? Is that why you donât love me anymore, Angelfish?â it slowly inches forward, and you bury yourself even further into the wood. Youâre about to reply to such an accusation before spying on a familiar glint buried in the coral on its shoulder.
Azuls antique coin. You need it.
â⌠I could never love Jade.â you move off the door, âIf⌠If youâre really my Azul, please,â you slowly walk to the shadow, putting on your best face, âproof to me that you're the man I love.â
It sits on the floor, opening its arms like Azul once did when he wanted you to sit with him, âthatâs one thing⌠What else, Azul?â you walk over to it, placating it as you sit in its lap.
You slowly inch your arms up its torso, waiting for its next move.
âAngelfish, tell me if thereâs anything you want, I shall get you it with a snap of my finger.â its arms wrap around your waist, pulling you into it. âAfter all, I'd do anything if it meant your happiness.â You successfully wrap your arms around its neck, plucking the coin from its shoulder.
âI wish for a puppy. Those little things are truly adorable.â
âAh, they quite are arenât they?â its fingers playfully trace up your spine, its face adorning the smile it mustâve practiced dozens of times. âDo you know what I wish for my love?â you prepare yourself to rip from his hold and make a dash for the window.
Thereâs a river near this window, if you throw this coin there, the current can carry it away.
âWhat Azul?â
âFor you to stop believing me to be so foolish.â Its smile quickly falls, throwing you to the door, far from your current objective. You grip the coin so hard, you fear it will embed itself into your palm, but it's better than losing it. âTruly, am I that hideous the idea of leaving with me is unfathomable?!â its tentacles wave around the room in a rampage. You stand up, ready to run to the door with whatever it takes.
âNoâŚ! You have my Azuls faceâŚ!â You run through the swing of each appendage. âYou could never be ugly in my eyes because of it!â Youâre only a few feet away from the window, mere feet from removing this falsified version of Azul.
Youâre met with the feeling of a slimy body blocking your path, a suffocating hug halting your path.
NoâŚ! No!
âIt doesnât matter if you hate me, Iâll always love you.â youâre so close⌠So close! âIt doesnât matter anymore, youâll find your love for me again when we leave this place.â
Love.
âWeâre leaving now, no matter what you convince me withââ You bury your lips into its own, those eyes widening at the feeling. You back it up with each exchange of your lips, caging it between you and the window. Itâs too caught up in the way you kiss it, to notice your arm raising the coin.
It looks down at you when you part for air, staring deeply into your eyes, a trail of black ink connecting your lips.
It finally notices when you smile at it, a smile filled with the purest of love, for a man in your past.
âI love you, Azul.â you chuck the coin into the river, the water dragging it far into the ocean.
âNoâ!â
You watch as its form disperses into a cloud of black dust, the last action it takes is to reach out for you.
For a moment, you see its face take on the true appearance of your husband, smiling at you.
The wind drags the ebony sand out the window, leaving you stranded in your room alone.
âAzulâŚâ
âŚ
The light peaks through the tree's leaves, shining on Azul as he checks his books.
âMy, it seems my husband is having an affair with moneyâŚ! How cruel, and you always told me I mattered much more.â you laugh at your words as Azul rolls his eyes at you, opening his mouth as you feed him.
âYes Angel, itâs because you matter much more to me that I do this, how else will I keep you happy?â He pushes up his glasses as you wrap yourself around his arm, resting your cheek on his shoulder.
âHmm⌠Perhaps take me out more often?â
âOh? Is three outings a sennight not enough for you? Greedy greedy.â he tuts at you as you laugh.
âIâm greedy? Seems quite hypocritical from a businessman, hm?â he smiles at you before planting a kiss on your temple.
âYes, greedy for you.â he shuts his book as he turns to face you. âWhen I die, I'm sure I'll be desperate for you even after death.â his hands hold your face in his palms.
âDonât say such things! Youâre going to send yourself to an early graveâŚ!â he doesn't answer, only smiling at you.
âŚ
You look down at Azuls grave, placing a bouquet of irises on his tomb.
âSee you soon Azul.â
You turn back to Jade, his arm sticking out to guide you back home. He smiles when you take hold of him, talking about your day.
You knock down the books on the table as Jade places you on his desk, his lips bite marks into your neck.
âI wonât be able to return to society if you keep this up, Leech.â His hands trace up your sides as he removes his teeth from your neck, licking a stripe up your skin before burying his lips into your own. Heâs so greedy with each kiss like heâs attempting to consume your love all for himself.
Whatâs left of it anyway.
âPerhaps thatâs what I want, yes? To have you all by yourself in this homeâŚâ A string of saliva connects you two at the moment. When he thinks youâve breathed enough, he traces his canines on your lip, biting the plush skin before reconnecting yourselves. You fall against his desk, his gloved hand wrapping your leg around his.
âPossessive, I donât like that in men, unfortunately.â he laughs at your words, rubbing circles into your hips.
âYes, then perhaps I should drop deadââ
âJaaade.â you both stand up at the call, Floyd wandering the halls aimlessly.
Jade sighs, extending his arm to guide you out of the room and see his brother until he gazes at the current state youâre in. Messied hair, swollen lips, and ruined nightwear, you smile messily at him,
â⌠I shall see to Floyd, stay in here.â he turns toe and walks toward the doors, your smile falling as you look at him.
He doesnât think youâve noticed, but you can see the way his body grows wispy in the light. Youâve seen the way he grows bigger at night.
Youâve noticed that Jade Leech has never been the man he says he is, for he is anything but a man.
You shouldâve known when the first moment you met him was through the remnants of Azuls shadow.
âââââââââââââ
A/n: I hope everyone enjoyed this!!! So far I think this is my favorite fic iâve written (â§âĄâŚ) âĄ. Honestly, I thought about having Floyd make an appearance, but I thought it would be funnier if Jade stop him from ever seeing you because he gets jealous you like him more LMAO.
Itâs not explicitly stated there because I wanted reader to be in the complete dark about the contract, but the reason he had you wed Jade after his death is simply because he loves you so much, the idea of you forever being alone because of him hurts. So, he signed the contract with Jade to ensure someone will love you in his absence đđđ
Plus, He noticed the way he gave you googly eyes whenever you were around and was like âreally? In front of me?â
Poor Floyd curses the fact he didnât make his lovey dovey eyes as strong as Jades ever since your remarriage, shouldâve been him đ.

Urban Hearts, Rural Souls
"Never had it this good before, huh?" he teased, his voice dripping with satisfaction as he watched you squirm beneath him. "And what about those boys from your city?" he taunted. "Do they fuck you this good? Huh?"
â Synopsis: Where you are a Rich Girl abruptly sent to the countryside by your worried parents, there, you meet Mingyu, the farmer's son, who introduces you to something that defies the shallow trappings of city living. â WC: 10.6k â WARNINGS: Smut, angst, fluff, oral (f. and m. receiving), intense sex, crying, dirty talk, cum eating, g'spot stimulation, wet pussy and etc. â Reader! Rich Spoiled Girl X Farmer! Mingyu
Wrapped in designer clothes from head to toe, strutting around in those expensive heels like you owned the world. And maybe you did, in a way. You were the kind of girl who had it all â overpriced clothes hanging in your closet like trophies, expensive cars parked in the driveway like shiny jewels, and a life filled to the brim with luxury. Your every whim was catered to, your desires instantly fulfilled with the swipe of a credit card.
But behind all the glitz and glamour, there was a gnawing emptiness that even the shiniest baubles couldn't fill. Your parents, bless their worried hearts, watched from the sidelines, knowing they had a hand in creating this materialistic monster. They'd given you everything you ever wanted, but maybe they didn't realize they were also giving you a one-way ticket to blindness.
You were always craving the next big thing, the newest gadget, the trendiest outfit. But in your quest for more, you lost sight of what truly mattered. Genuine connections, simple pleasures, the beauty of a sunsetâthose things seemed to fade into the background against the allure of luxury.
Your parents, busy with their own pursuits of wealth and success, rarely saw you at home. They provided you with everything money could buy, but as time passed, they began to realize that they had unwittingly traded your presence for material possessions.
"Sorry, I can't go to this dinner, I already promised my friend that I would club with her tonight," you said, leaving the keys of a Porsche in your hands, closing the door.
"Sorry, I'm going shopping today," you said, looking at yourself in the mirror, leaving and closing the door again.
"Sorry, I'm going to hang out with Jisoo today," you said, once more leaving the keys of a Porsche in your hands, closing the door.
Your parents tried to intervene, gently nudging you towards a more meaningful existence. But you brushed off their concerns, too wrapped up in your own world of excess to see the wisdom in their words. After all, why settle for less when you could have it all?
Yet, deep down, a small voice whispered that maybe there was more to life than the next shopping spree or exclusive event. Maybe true happiness wasn't found in the gleam of a diamond or the purr of a sports car engine.
There you were, lounging by the pool with your phone in hand, completely engrossed in the digital medias. The sun beat down, casting shimmering reflections on the water's surface as you scrolled and tapped away, oblivious to everything else around you.
Suddenly, your mom emerged from the doorway, her expression serious yet gentle as she made her way towards you. She called out your name, her voice cutting through the haze of your screen-induced trance. With a sigh, you reluctantly tore your gaze away from your phone, realizing that this was no ordinary interruption.
She explained that it was time for a chat, a real one, away from the distractions of social media and status updates. You hesitated for a moment.
Eventually, you acquiesced, dragging yourself out of the pool and wrapping a robe around your damp skin. As you followed your mom back into the house, you couldn't shake the feeling of apprehension that settled in the pit of your stomach.Â
You found your parents sitting at the dining table, their expressions unusually serious. With a nonchalant air, you plopped down in front of them, taking a leisurely sip of your juice.
Your dad cleared his throat, his tone carrying a weight of concern. "Sweetheart, we need to talk. Your mom and I have been growing increasingly worried about you."
You fought the urge to roll your eyes. Here we go again, you thought, another lecture about how you only cared about material things.
Your mom chimed in, her voice gentle but firm. "We know you might not like what we have to say, but we truly believe it's for the best."
You raised an eyebrow, already anticipating the worst. "Let me guess, you're cutting off my credit cards?"
Your dad let out a humorless scoff. "As tempting as that may sound, no. But we have decided that it's time for you to take a break from this lifestyle. You need to step back and reassess what truly matters in life."
You couldn't help but scoff, the corners of your mouth twisting into a mocking smile. "Let me guess, you're sending me to some remote island resort to 'find myself'?"
Your parents exchanged a glance before your dad spoke again, his tone grave. "Actually, we've arranged for you to spend some time in the countryside. In the home of some dear friends of ours. It'll be a chance for you to unwind, disconnect, and maybe gain some perspective."
You leaned back in your chair, disbelief written all over your face. "You've got to be kidding me. You're seriously sending me to some rustic farm in the middle of nowhere?"
But as you looked into their unwavering gazes, you realized they weren't joking. They were dead serious about this. And suddenly, the prospect of trading designer labels for mud-stained boots didn't seem so far-fetched after all.
Your dad's words hit you like a ton of bricks. "Wait, you're telling me you didn't even mention this earlier?" you exclaimed, eyes wide with disbelief. "This has to be some kind of joke, right? You can tell me now."
But before your dad could respond, his phone rang, interrupting the conversation. As he answered, you stood there dumbfounded, watching him hurriedly talk to the person on the other end.
"Oh hello, yes yes, she's traveling today. She's getting ready. Thank you so much, Mr. Kim," your dad said into the phone before hanging up.
You felt a rush of panic as reality set in. They were serious. You were really being whisked away to some countryside retreat without so much as a warning.
Rushing to your room, you flung open your largest suitcase, hastily stuffing it with your best clothes, your mind still reeling from the sudden turn of events. Designer dresses and high heels made way for practical boots and sturdy jackets, a stark departure from your usual wardrobe.
You barely had time to indulge in one last comforting soak in your oversized tub before the reality of the situation hit you like a splash of cold water. Sitting on the couch, arms crossed, your suitcase stood by your side like a silent sentinel.
Despite your indignation and discomfort with the whole situation, you knew deep down that your parents only wanted what was best for you. But seriously, how did they think this was a good idea? Just the thought of mosquitoes made you shiver involuntarily.
As you heard the honk from the driveway, you begrudgingly grabbed your suitcase and followed your parents to the door. Stepping outside, you were met with a man who greeted you with a warm smile, remarking on how much you had grown. He was the friend of your father, the same one you had seen in old family photos.
Despite your lingering resentment, you treated him with the utmost politeness. After all, he was just following your parents' instructions, and he seemed genuinely kind.
Your parents bid you farewell, their seriousness about the whole ordeal evident in their expressions. But before you could climb into the car, your mom stopped you, snatching your phone from your hands. You scoffed incredulously, "What, no phone too?"
She simply nodded, stating matter-of-factly, "There's no internet anyway."
With a frustrated sigh, you allowed yourself to be pushed into the car, the middle-aged man already taking your suitcase and stowing it in the trunk. As the car pulled away from the driveway, you couldn't help but wonder what kind of wilderness adventure awaited you in the countryside.
As the car rolled along the winding countryside roads, Mr. Kim struck up a conversation with you, perhaps sensing your unease.
"So, your parents tell me you're not too thrilled about this little getaway," he began, his tone light and friendly.
You glanced at him, unsure of how much to reveal. "Yeah, you could say that. I'm more of a city person, you know? This whole countryside thing isn't really my scene."
He chuckled softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I figured as much. But hey, sometimes it's good to shake things up a bit, right? You might find you enjoy it more than you think."
You raised an eyebrow skeptically. "I highly doubt that."
Undeterred, he continued, asking you about your life in the city, your favorite hangouts, and the luxuries you were accustomed to. With each response, he laughed, seemingly amused by the stark contrast between your world and the one you were about to enter.
"You know," he said with a grin, "sometimes it's the unexpected experiences that end up being the most memorable. Who knows, you might discover a whole new side of yourself out here."
As the car rumbled along the road for what felt like hours, the familiar hum of the city fading into the distance, you watched as the asphalt gradually transformed into a dusty dirt road. The scenery changed from towering skyscrapers to vast expanses of green fields and rolling hills.
Finally, the car came to a stop, and the man turned to you with a smile. "Well, we're here," he announced cheerfully.
You peered out the window, taking in your surroundings. Before you stretched acres of farmland, dotted with quaint wooden buildings and surrounded by lush vegetation.
This was certainly a far cry from the luxury hotels and high-rise penthouses you were accustomed to, but there was a certain allure to its simplicity that intrigued you.
Mr. Kim gets out of the car, saying he's going to ask for help with your suitcases, and disappears into the house.
Stepping out of the car that had transported you from the city to the countryside, with a disdainful glance around, you smoothed down your summer dress and adjusted your sunglasses, attempting to shield yourself from the glaring sun.
Just as you were about to take a step forward, your designer boots caught on a loose cobblestone, and you stumbled clumsily, arms flailing wildly as you tried to regain your balance.
With a loud yelp, you crashed ungracefully into a pile of hay, your dress now adorned with specks of dirt and straw. Uttering a few curses under your breath, you began to clean yourself off, feeling thoroughly irritated by the whole debacle.
To your surprise, you heard a sincere laugh echoing from somewhere nearby. "Smooth entrance." came the amused voice.
Startled, you looked up to see a tall, muscular guy leaning against the porch, clad in a simple white tank top and worn jeans. He had the rugged look of someone who spent their days working the land, and you couldn't help but feel a pang of annoyance at his false amused expression.
"Very funny," you muttered, shooting him a withering glare as you brushed off the last of the hay from your dress.
The guy smirked at your retort, "Hey, don't blame me for your lack of grace," he teased, stepping closer to you.
You crossed your arms defensively, shooting back, "Well, don't blame me for your lack of fashion sense."
He chuckled, unfazed by your jab. "Fashion sense? Please. I'd take practicality over designer labels any day."
Rolling your eyes, you scoffed, "Easy for you to say when you probably haven't stepped foot in a city in years."
His smirk widened, and he tilted his head, challenging you. "And what's wrong with that? Country life has its perks, you know. Fresh air, wide open spaces... not to mention, real food."
You narrowed your eyes, feeling a surge of defiance. "Oh, please. I'll take a five-star restaurant over your farm-to-table nonsense any day."
With a shrug, he flashed you a knowing grin. "We'll see about that."
He furrows his eyebrows as he reaches for your suitcases, grunting slightly as he lifts them from the ground. "What the hell are you packing in here, bricks?" he mutters, struggling slightly under the weight.Â
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at his dramatics. With his broad shoulders and muscular arms, it was obvious he could easily handle the weight. But instead, he seemed intent on putting on a show of struggle.
As he hoisted the suitcases up, you glanced at his impressive physique, a stark contrast to your own slender frame. "Oh, I don't know," you replied casually, masking your amusement. "Maybe you're just not as strong as you think you are."
His expression darkened at your taunt, and you could practically see the steam coming out of his ears as he begrudgingly followed you towards the house. "Yeah, whatever," he muttered, his voice tinged with annoyance.
You couldn't resist a small smirk as you walked ahead, enjoying the satisfaction of getting the last word in.
As you approach the quaint farmhouse, nestled amidst the serene countryside, you're greeted by a picturesque scene straight out of a storybook. Lush greenery and vibrant foliage surround the charming abode, a small porch extends from the front of the house, its weathered floorboards worn smooth by years of use, a few well-worn rocking chairs moving with the breeze.Â
You glanced around the bedroom, taking note of the meticulously prepared bed with towels neatly arranged on top. Despite your initial skepticism, it was clear that some effort had been put into making you feel welcome.
Mingyu stood beside you, his expression unreadable as he watched your reaction. For a moment, there was silence between the two of you, the air thick with tension.
Just then, Mr. Kim appeared in the doorway, a warm smile on his face. "Ah, I see you've met my son, Mingyu," he said, placing a hand on Mingyu's shoulder. "He'll be helping out around here during your stay."
Mingyu flashed you a half-hearted smile, his expression tinged with a hint of mockery. "Yeah, we had the great pleasure of meeting earlier," he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
You raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on your lips. "Oh yes, it was truly unforgettable," you replied, matching his mocking tone. "I especially enjoyed the part where I ended up covered in hay."
Mr. Kim chuckled at the banter between you and his son, clearly amused by the exchange. "I'm sure you two will get along just fine," he said with a knowing smile, before leaving you to settle in.
Feeling a bit lost and unsure of what to do with yourself, you decided to head back to the living room. As you entered, you spotted Mingyu in the kitchen, busy mixing something on the stove, while a woman arranged antique stamped dishes on the table.
Her warm smile drew your attention, and you couldn't help but admire her grace as she went about her tasks. When she noticed your presence, she immediately set aside her cooking apron and approached you, enveloping you in a tight hug.
You returned the gesture, feeling a sense of warmth and comfort wash over you in her embrace. She introduced herself as Mrs. Kim, and her genuine compliment about your appearance made you blush, a shy smile tugging at your lips.
Before you could respond, you caught Mingyu's glance from across the room. When your eyes met his, he quickly looked away, returning his focus to the task at hand.
Feeling a bit flustered by the unexpected attention, you cleared your throat and glanced around the room, searching for something to say. "Thank you, Mrs. Kim"Â
Ah, but you missed your 16-seat table. Your silvered forks and knivesâŚ
She beamed at your words, her eyes sparkling with warmth. "Oh, it's nothing, dear. Just a simple meal to welcome you to our home," she said warmly, patting your arm affectionately.
Despite your initial frustration and discomfort with the abrupt change in scenery and the unfamiliar accents surrounding you, you couldn't deny the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Kims. As you observed Mrs. Kim bustling around the kitchen and Mingyu's earnest efforts to make you feel welcome, a sense of guilt began to gnaw at you.
As Mrs. Kim served you a plate of food, you couldn't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the array of dishes laid out before you. Unsure of what to pick, you glanced around nervously, feeling the weight of everyone's expectant gazes upon you.
Taking a tentative first bite, the food was simple yet bursting with deliciousness, each bite infused with a warmth and comfort that you hadn't realized you were craving.
Your eyes widened in surprise as you savored the food, a genuine smile spreading across your face. "Wow, this is really good," you exclaimed, unable to hide your delight.
The Kims exchanged knowing glances, their smiles widening at your enthusiastic reaction. It was clear that they were pleased to see you enjoying their home-cooked meal.
As you continued to eat, you found yourself digging in with gusto, savoring every bite as if it were the most delicious thing you had ever tasted. It was a stark contrast to the fast food and gourmet dishes you were accustomed to in the city, and yet, there was something undeniably special about this homemade meal made with love.
Mingyu and his dad shared subtle, satisfied smiles, their eyes twinkling with amusement as they watched you devouring the food with such enthusiasm. It was clear that they were pleased to see you embracing their culinary traditions and finding joy in the simple pleasures, for the first time?Â
As you rolled up your sleeves and began to help with the dishes, Mingyu appeared at your side with a teasing smirk. "Well, I'm surprised to see you know how to wash a plate," he remarked, his tone laced with playful incredulity.
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at his playful jab. "Oh, please. It's not like I've never washed a dish before," you retorted, scrubbing a plate with more force than necessary.
Mingyu chuckled at your defensive tone, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I'm just surprised, is all. Figured someone with nails as pristine as yours would be afraid to get them dirty," he teased, gesturing to your perfectly manicured hands.
You shot him a pointed look, a hint of irritation creeping into your voice. "My nails will be just fine, thank you very much." you replied curtly.
After finishing up with the dishes, you managed to steal a quiet moment for yourself. Making your way to the bathroom, you were pleasantly surprised to find that there was hot water available, despite being in the midst of a countryside farm. And as you drifted off to sleep, the sound of crickets chirping outside lulling you into a peaceful slumber.
As the sun streamed through the window, bathing the room in a warm glow, you slowly stirred from your sleep, feeling more refreshed than you had in ages. The sound of a rooster crowing in the distance filled the air, a gentle reminder that you were far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Just as you were about to stretch, you heard a familiar voice at your door. Groaning inwardly, you sat up, blinking away the remnants of sleep as you focused on the figure standing in the doorway.
There stood Mingyu, holding a pair of buckets in his hands. "Hey, sleepyhead," he called out, a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes. "Time to rise and shine. We've got a cow to milk."
You blinked in disbelief, your mind struggling to process the request. Milk a cow? Surely he must be joking. But as you glanced out the window and saw the sun rising higher in the sky, and the way he stood at the door, you realized that he was serious.
With a resigned sigh, you pushed back the covers and swung your legs over the side of the bed, steeling yourself for the unfamiliar task ahead.Â
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at Mingyu's teasing remark as he caressed the cow with practiced ease. "Yeah, well, I figured I'd take precautions after yesterday's little incident," you retorted, gesturing to your brightly colored galoshes.
Mingyu chuckled at your response, shaking his head in amusement. "Fair enough," he conceded, his eyes twinkling with laughter. "But I've got to admit, you look a bit out of place here on the farm."
You huffed indignantly, feeling a pang of annoyance at his comment. "And what exactly am I supposed to look like?" you shot back, crossing your arms defensively. "Peppa Pig jumping in muddy puddles?"
Mingyu's laughter rang out loud and clear, the sound echoing through the barn as he shook his head incredulously. "Hey, I'm just saying, those boots aren't exactly farm chic," he replied, unable to hide his amusement.
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes again, instead choosing to focus on the task at hand. As Mingyu nodded towards the bucket under the cow and the small stool nearby, you took a deep breath, steeling yourself for the challenge ahead.
As you continued to milk the cow with gentle, tentative strokes, Mingyu couldn't help but chuckle at your cautious approach. "If you keep going at this pace, we'll be here until evening," he teased, shaking his head in mock exasperation.
You couldn't help but sulk at his teasing, feeling a pang of self-doubt creeping in. "I'm just afraid of hurting her," you admitted softly, glancing down at the cow's udders with concern.
Mingyu rolled his eyes playfully, squatting down behind you and gently taking your hands in his. "Here, let me show you," he murmured, his voice low and soothing as he guided your movements.
As his warm hands enveloped yours, you felt a jolt of electricity shoot through you, you couldn't help but be drawn to the way his chest pressed against your back, his breath tickling your ear as he whispered instructions. Lost in the sensation of his touch, you found yourself forgetting about the task at hand, your focus shifting entirely to him.Â
"See? It's not so hard, is it?" Mingyu's voice broke through your thoughts, his tone gentle and encouraging.
Oh, it sure is, with those arms around you.
You nodded slowly, still feeling a bit flustered by the unexpected closeness between you. "Yeah, I guess not."
As you watched the chickens with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, your mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, unable to find the words to express your uncertainty.
Noticing your hesitation, Mingyu couldn't help but chuckle at your predicament. "Looks like it's time to collect some eggs," he remarked, gesturing towards the coop with a smirk.
Taking a deep breath, you steeled yourself for the task ahead and stepped into the coop, determined to prove that you were capable of handling farm chores. But as soon as you entered, the chickens seemed to sense your unease and began to peck at your legs and feet, their sharp beaks causing you to yelp in surprise.
Jumping back in alarm, you flailed your arms wildly, trying to fend off the feathery assailants as Mingyu looked on, shaking his head in amusement. "Well, that's one way to get the eggs," he quipped, unable to suppress his laughter at your antics.
Feeling flustered and more than a little embarrassed, you quickly retreated from the coop, shooting Mingyu a sheepish look. "I think I'll leave the egg collecting to the experts," you muttered, feeling defeated.
Mingyu grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he watched you dust yourself off. "Don't worry, princess, I'll take care of it," he teased, reaching for the basket and heading towards the coop with a knowing smirk.
Mingyu couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of you sprawled out on the sofa, your face flushed from the sun and your body looking utterly exhausted. His mom joined in with a soft giggle, amused by your worn-out appearance.
"Looks like someone had quite the day," Mingyu remarked with a grin, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he observed you from across the room.
You let out a tired groan, your limbs feeling heavy and your muscles aching from the day's activities. "I feel like I've run a marathon," you admitted with a weary smile, unable to hide the exhaustion in your voice.
Mingyu's mom nodded in understanding, her eyes filled with warmth and affection as she looked at you. "It takes some getting used to, but you'll adjust," she reassured you, her voice gentle and reassuring.
Mingyu flashed you a reassuring smile, his gaze lingering on you with a hint of admiration. "Yeah, you'll get used to it," he echoed, his voice soft and reassuring.
As you lay on the sofa, your mind drifted to thoughts of your friends back in the city. You could already imagine their laughter and teasing when they heard about your countryside misadventures.
The image of them laughing at the idea of you "touching cow's tits" made you cringe, and you couldn't help but feel a twinge of embarrassment at the thought of being the subject of their jokes. And the mental image of you being chased by chickens while wearing bright yellow galoshes instead of your usual designer boots was almost too much to bear.
As you stood face to face with the towering horse, a surge of determination coursed through you. You were determined to prove to Mingyu that you were capable of handling any challenge that came your way, no matter how unfamiliar or daunting.
With a defiant glare, you met Mingyu's gaze head-on, refusing to back down from the challenge before you. "Did you know that horseback riding is expensive enough for me to know?" you retorted, your voice laced with confidence.
Mingyu raised an eyebrow at your defiant remark, his hands on his hips as he regarded you with a mixture of amusement and skepticism. "Is this a dare?" he asked, a hint of challenge in his tone.
You smirked, your eyes gleaming with determination. "It's not a dare if I'm going to win," you replied boldly, your confidence unwavering.
Mingyu chuckled at your bravado, shaking his head in amusement. "Well, we'll see about that," he replied with a smirk of his own. "But I'll have you know, a farmer can ride way better than a rich girly who did hipstism."
As you settled into the saddle and urged the horse forward, you felt a surge of exhilaration coursing through your veins. With each powerful stride of the horse beneath you, you felt a sense of connection and freedom unlike anything you had ever experienced.
Glancing back at Mingyu, who was hot on your heels, you couldn't help but smirk at the competitive gleam in his eye. With a determined flick of the reins, you urged your horse to pick up the pace, the wind whipping through your hair as you galloped across the long field.
Feeling the rhythm of the horse's movements beneath you, you couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration as you rode faster and faster, the thrill of the chase driving you forward.
But as you approached the towering mount of straw ahead, Mingyu's voice rang out behind you, announcing the end of the race. "This is it!" he shouted, his voice carrying over the wind.
You turned to face him with a confident smile, your eyes sparkling with determination. "Bet," you replied, your voice filled with certainty as you prepared to take on the challenge ahead.
s you crossed the finish line first, a victorious grin spread across your face. You patted the horse affectionately, thanking it for its speed and cooperation, a playful twinkle in your eye as if expecting a response from the animal.
Mingyu appeared right behind you, his expression a mixture of surprise and begrudging admiration. He glanced at you, clearly not wanting to give the impression that he was impressed, but failing miserably.
You couldn't help but laugh at his unsuccessfully concealed expression, a playful smirk tugging at your lips. "Looks like I win," you teased, unable to resist the opportunity to gloat a little.
Mingyu rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Beginner's luck," he muttered, trying to brush off his defeat with a nonchalant shrug.
But you could see through his facade, and you knew that deep down, he was impressed by your riding skills. "Sure, keep telling yourself that," you replied with a playful wink, reveling in your victory.
As the days turned into weeks, Mingyu and his parents couldn't help but notice a change in you. At first, they were surprised by your transformation. They had expected you to grow restless and bored, eager to return to the comforts of city life. But instead, they watched in awe as you flourished in your new surroundings.
While you may have initially viewed your newfound chores as a means to an end, a way to expedite your return to the comforts of home, you couldn't deny the genuine joy and fulfillment you experienced in caring for the animals and immersing yourself in farm activities.
With each passing day, as you spent more time in the stable and the fields, you discovered a sense of peace and contentment that you had never known before.Â
Whenever Mingyu's parents were away in the center of the countryside, Mingyu took it upon himself to keep you entertained and engaged, determined to show you the lighter side of farm life and ensure that you didn't find the countryside boring.
Sometimes, he would teach you how to fish in the nearby stream, laughing as you fumbled with the bait and giggling as you shrieked with delight whenever you felt a tug on the line. From impromptu horseback races across the fields to makeshift picnics under the shade of a sprawling oak tree, Mingyu made sure that there was never a dull moment when you were together.
As the rain poured down outside, Mingyu looked at you with a mischievous grin, his eyes dancing with excitement. "Hey, since we're stuck inside anyway, how about we play a game of hide and seek?" he suggested, his voice filled with enthusiasm.
You couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in surprise at his suggestion. Hide and seek? Wasn't that a game for children? You hadn't played it in years, not since you were a kid back in the city.
"But isn't that game a bit... childish?" you asked, your tone laced with skepticism. After all, hide and seek seemed like such a simple and silly game, hardly befitting someone of your age and sophistication.
Mingyu laughed at your hesitation, shaking his head in amusement. "Come on, it'll be fun! Besides, it's not like we have anything else to do while we're stuck inside," he replied, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
You hesitated for a moment, unsure if you wanted to indulge in such a childish pastime. But as you glanced out the window at the dreary weather outside, you couldn't help but feel a spark of curiosity and excitement at the prospect of a little indoor adventure.
With a reluctant smile, you finally relented, nodding your head in agreement. "Alright, fine. But you owe me if I end up getting bored," you teased, unable to hide the hint of amusement in your voice.
Mingyu grinned at your acceptance, his eyes alight with excitement. "Deal," he replied.
As Mingyu's voice counted down from ten, you dashed around the house, your heart racing with excitement as you searched for the perfect hiding spot. His laughter echoed through the halls as he called out the numbers, his anticipation building with each passing moment.
Finally, you found itâa small space between the wardrobe and the wall in your room. It seemed like the perfect hiding spot, tucked away from sight with just enough room for you to squeeze into. With a quick glance over your shoulder to make sure no one was watching, you darted into the hiding place and pressed your back against the wall, your heart pounding with excitement.
As you waited in the darkness, the sound of Mingyu's footsteps grew closer, his laughter echoing through the room as he searched for you. You held your breath, trying to stifle the giggles threatening to escape as his footsteps drew nearer and nearer.
Suddenly, you heard a soft gasp as Mingyu's hand brushed against the wardrobe, his fingers grazing the edge of your hiding spot. Your heart skipped a beat as you held your breath, hoping he wouldn't find you.
As Mingyu's hand brushed against your shoulder and his fingers wrapped around your arm, pulling you out of your hiding place, you couldn't help but let out a startled gasp as your body collided with his. His laughter filled the room, echoing in the darkness, but you couldn't find it in you to join in.
"Sulking again, huh?" Mingyu teased, his voice warm and playful as he wrapped his other arm around you, pulling you close.Â
You rolled your eyes in response, trying to hide the smile that threatened to tug at your lips despite your best efforts to maintain your facade of annoyance. "I don't sulk," you protested weakly, but even to your own ears, the protest sounded half-hearted.
Mingyu chuckled softly, the sound reverberating through the room as he held you close. "Sure you don't," he replied, his tone teasing but affectionate.Â
Suddenly, you felt his hands on your face, his fingers tracing your features with a gentle touch that made your heart race. In the darkness, his touch seemed to intensify, his caress becoming more intimate as he explored the contours of your face with a tenderness that took your breath away.
As Mingyu's lips met yours, time seemed to stand still, the world falling away as you melted into his embrace. His lips were soft and warm against yours, sending a thrill of electricity coursing through your veins as he pressed your back against the wardrobe, his hand pulling you closer by your waist.
With a soft moan, you found yourself responding eagerly to his touch, your hands tangling in his hair as you deepened the kiss. Mingyu groaned against your lips, the sound sending a shiver of pleasure down your cunt as his tongue danced with yours.
As Mingyu's lips trailed down to your neck, igniting a trail of fire with each kiss, you couldn't help but moan softly, your body arching towards him in response to the overwhelming sensations coursing through you.
"M-MingyuâŚ"
"I can feel how much you want me," he continued, his voice low and seductive. "You're practically melting against me, begging for my touch."
His words sent a shiver of anticipation down your spine, your breath coming in ragged gasps as you surrendered yourself to the pleasure of his touch.
"You're so beautiful like this," he murmured, his lips brushing against your ear.
His hands roamed over your body, exploring every curve and contour with a hunger that matched your own. As he pressed his body against yours, you could feel the heat radiating from him, the intensity of his desire burning bright in the darkness.
As his fingers brushed against your hardened nipple through your top, you couldn't help but let out a soft gasp of pleasure, the sensation sending waves of heat coursing through you.
Feeling your reaction, Mingyu hissed in response, his desire evident in the husky tone of his voice. "I need to see you," he murmured urgently, his hands moving to lift your top, his fingers tracing the contours of your body in the darkness. "This darkness isn't helping."
With a nod of understanding, you waited patiently as he disappeared into the darkness, the anticipation building with each passing moment. And then, just as suddenly as he had left, he reappeared with two lanterns, the warm glow casting a soft light over the room.
And there you were, already naked and sitting on the bed, your body bathed in the soft light of the lanterns. Mingyu's eyes widened in surprise, a low hum of appreciation escaping his lips as he took in the sight before him.
"You're naughty," he murmured, his voice husky with desire as he approached you slowly. The warmth of the lanterns illuminated every curve and contour of your body, casting a mesmerizing glow that left him spellbound.
As the room filled with light, you couldn't help but catch your breath at the sight of Mingyu standing before you, his features illuminated in the golden glow of the lanterns. His eyes burned with desire as he looked at you, his gaze traveling over your body with hunger and longing.
With a soft smile, he stepped closer, the warmth of the lanterns enveloping you both. "Now I can see every inch of you," he murmured, his voice thick with desire.Â
s Mingyu's hands deftly removed his shirt, tossing it aside with a casual flick of his wrist, your eyes were drawn to the sight of his toned, muscular body illuminated by the warm glow of the lanterns. His hard work and dedication were evident in the way his muscles rippled beneath his skin, sending a shiver of desire coursing through you.
Instinctively, your legs pressed together, the heat pooling between them as you felt the unmistakable arousal building within you. Mingyu's presence was intoxicating, his sheer physicality leaving you breathless and eager for more.
Unable to resist the temptation any longer, you reached out to him, your hands tracing the contours of his chest and abdomen with a hungry urgency. His skin was warm beneath your touch, his muscles firm and taut as you explored every inch of him with a sense of wonder and reverence.
As your fingers trailed lower, tracing the outline of his hardened arousal, a low groan escaped Mingyu's lips, his desire mirroring your own.
As you untangled his belt and lowered his jeans, your desperation was palpable, your need for him evident in every movement. Mingyu watched you with a knowing smile, his lip caught between his teeth as he observed your eagerness.
With a sense of anticipation building between you, you got down on your knees before him, your eyes pleading as you lowered his underwear, revealing his thick, pulsing cock. It lay heavy on your face, the weight of it sending a thrill of excitement coursing through you.
Mingyu's breath caught in his throat as he watched you, his desire growing with each passing moment. "That's it, baby," he murmured huskily, his voice thick with lust. "Show me how much you want it."
With a slow, provocative motion, you began to suck on the tip of his cock, teasing him with your tongue as you savored the taste of him on your lips. Mingyu groaned in pleasure, his hands tangling in your hair as he urged you on.
But then, with a sudden shift in his demeanor, Mingyu's voice took on a commanding tone. "Enough teasing," he growled, his gaze dark with desire. "I want you to suck it, all of it. Show me how good you can make me feel."
As you obediently lowered your head, taking all of Mingyu's length into your mouth, you could feel him groaning in pleasure above you. His hands tightened in your hair, gripping it firmly as if he were holding onto reins, his fingers wrapping around your locks like a lasso.
With each deep thrust, he urged you on, his voice thick with desire as he commanded you to take him deeper. "That's it," he moaned, the sound reverberating through your body as you continued to obey his every whim. "Just like that, baby, all the way in."
As you relaxed your jaw, allowing Mingyu's thick cock to press against the back of your throat, a wave of pleasure surged through him, causing his knees to falter for a moment. But you remained steadfast, your determination unwavering as you held your breath and took him deeper, allowing him to penetrate you fully.
Mingyu's grip on your hair tightened as he let out a guttural groan of pleasure, his hips bucking involuntarily as he was overcome by the intense sensation of your throat enveloping him. The feeling of your warm, wet mouth engulfing him completely sent waves of ecstasy coursing through his body, igniting a fire within him that threatened to consume him whole.
With each deep thrust, he felt himself losing control, his desire mounting to dizzying heights as he surrendered himself completely to the overwhelming pleasure of the moment. And as you continued to take him deeper, your throat accommodating his girth with ease, he knew that he was on the brink of an explosion unlike anything he had ever experienced before.
As Mingyu pulled on the lasso of your hair, halting just before he reached his climax, you let out a whimper of anticipation, your body trembling with need. He pulled you up and pushed you onto the bed, spreading your legs apart as he positioned himself between them. Your ass lifted off the bed, your breath coming in shallow gasps as you waited for his next move.
With a hungry look in his eyes, Mingyu dropped to his knees before you, his tongue darting out to lick a fat stripe along your slit. A moan escaped your lips as pleasure shot through you, your body arching off the bed in response. "Mmm... yes," you murmured, the sensation overwhelming as he continued to lap at your pussy with fervent eagerness.
Mingyu cooed softly as he tasted you, his tongue exploring every inch of your wetness with a skillful precision that left you dizzy with pleasure. "You taste so good," he whispered, his voice low and husky as he lavished attention on your sensitive folds.Â
As Mingyu sucked on your clit, bobbing his head with a fervent eagerness that sent waves of pleasure coursing through you, you couldn't help but moan loudly, the sensation overwhelming you completely. "Ohh... yesss," you cried out, your voice filled with unrestrained passion as he worked his magic on you.
He held back a smirk as he felt your cunt throbbing with the approach of your orgasm, knowing that he had you right where he wanted you. With a wicked grin, he doubled down on his efforts, sucking your whole pussy hard, his tongue lapping at your juices with an insatiable hunger.
The intensity of his ministrations pushed you over the edge, your body convulsing with pleasure as the orgasm washed over you with a force that left you breathless. Mingyu smiled triumphantly as he felt you come embarrassingly fast, your moans filling the room with the sweet sound of your pleasure.
As Mingyu laid you down properly on the bed, he gazed into your eyes with a hunger that sent shivers down your spine. His voice was low and husky as he asked how much you wanted him to fuck you, and you could barely think straight, your mind clouded with desire.
With your orgasm still pulsing through your body, you almost drunkenly replied that you wanted him a lot, your words slurred with pleasure. Mingyu's lips curled into a wicked grin as he heard your response, his eyes smoldering with lust as he leaned in closer.
"And how much do you want this farmer to fuck you?" he murmured, his voice dripping with desire as he teased you with his words. The hint of his country accent sent a shiver of anticipation coursing through you, your body quivering with need.
You rolled your hips instinctively, searching for his cock, your movements desperate and needy. Mingyu chuckled softly at your eagerness, his hands roaming over your body possessively as he continued to taunt you with his dirty talk.
With a whimper of desire, you opened your mouth in an "o" of longing, unable to resist the overwhelming urge to feel him deep inside you. "A lot," you gasped, your voice trembling with need. "I want it... a lot... please..."
Mingyu's cock lay heavy against your belly, the sight of it making your breath catch in your throat. He looked at you with a wicked grin, his eyes burning with desire as he teased you with the promise of what was to come.
"Do you want my cock right here?" he murmured huskily, his voice sending shivers down your spine. "Inside of this pretty little pussy of yours?"
You could only nod eagerly, your body trembling with anticipation as you gazed up at him with lust-filled eyes. "Yes," you whispered breathlessly, your voice barely above a moan. "Please, Mingyu... I need it... I need you inside me..."
Mingyu's grin widened at your response, his desire reaching a fever pitch as he positioned himself between your legs, ready to claim you as his own. With a primal growl, he pushed himself inside you, filling you completely with his throbbing cock as you cried out in ecstasy.
As Mingyu kissed you with a hunger that matched your own, you cried out in pleasure, feeling your pussy clenching tighter around his throbbing cock with each thrust. Your hands roamed over his back, feeling every ridge and muscle beneath his skin as he moved with a primal intensity that drove you wild with desire.
Suddenly, he took his cock out and pushed back inside you with all his force, causing your head to be thrown back in ecstasy. The sensation of him filling you so completely, stretching you to your limits, sent waves of pleasure coursing through you, igniting a fire within you that threatened to consume you whole.
Mingyu's gaze locked with yours, his eyes boring into your soul as tears streamed down your cheeks, your body trembling with the intensity of his thrusts. He leaned in close, his voice low and husky as he whispered filthy words that sent shivers down your spine.
"You like that, don't you?" he murmured, his breath hot against your ear as he continued to pound into you with relentless force. "You like feeling my cock splitting you in half, don't you, baby?"
You could only whimper in response, your pussy clenching tightly around him at his words, sending a jolt of pleasure coursing through both of you. Mingyu stuttered for a moment, surprised by the intensity of your reaction, before letting out a low chuckle.
"Never had it this good before, huh?" he teased, his voice dripping with satisfaction as he watched you squirm beneath him. "And what about those boys from your city?" he taunted. "Do they fuck you this good? Huh?"
You shook your head vehemently, your legs trembling around his waist as you cried out in pleasure. "No," you screamed, the word torn from your lips in a primal moan. "They don't... ah!"
Mingyu grinned triumphantly at your response, his own pleasure mounting to dizzying heights as he continued to drive you wild with desire. With each powerful thrust, he pushed you closer and closer to the edge, determined to show you just how good it could be with a real man like him.
As Mingyu's cock pounded into you relentlessly, a white ring formed around his shaft, evidence of your overwhelming arousal. He looked down at you with a smirk, his voice low and husky as he taunted you with his words.
"Can you hear how wet you are, baby?" he murmured, his breath hot against your skin as he leaned in closer. "You're practically dripping for me."
You blushed furiously at his words, feeling a surge of embarrassment wash over you at the realization of just how turned on you were. But despite your embarrassment, you couldn't deny the overwhelming pleasure coursing through your veins, driving you to new heights of ecstasy with each thrust.
You bit your lip nervously, unable to form a coherent response as Mingyu's cock continued to pound into you with relentless determination. Your back arched involuntarily, your body betraying you with its desperate need for more.
Mingyu's hips plunged deep into you, sending shockwaves of pleasure coursing through your body as you jolted, desperately reaching for his hand. He chuckled softly, his voice dripping with amusement as he teased you mercilessly.
"Oh, looks like I found it," he taunted, his thrusts growing harder and more relentless with each passing moment. "Right here... and here again. Is this where you want me, baby?"
You could only whimper in response, your mind consumed by the overwhelming pleasure of his touch. "I-I'm going to cum," you gasped, your voice thick with desire as your orgasm approached with dizzying speed.
Mingyu's hand tightened around yours, providing you with an anchor to hold onto as he continued to pound into you with an intensity that left you breathless. His hips worked deep against your G-spot, driving you closer and closer to the edge with each thrust.
"Come for me, baby," he whispered huskily, his voice laced with desire as he urged you on. "I want to feel you cumming around me."
As Mingyu noticed the way you tensed hard and squeezed his hand tightly, he could feel the intensity building within you. "You're going to cum so hard for me, baby"
And then, as if on cue, you let go, your body convulsing with the force of the orgasm that tore through you. Mingyu watched in awe as you came apart in his arms, your screams filling the room as you lost yourself completely to the pleasure.
"Fuck," he breathed, his voice hoarse with desire as he drank in the sight of you, your body trembling with ecstasy as you rode out the waves of pleasure. He didn't want to blink, didn't want to miss a single moment of the beautiful sight before him.
As your body finally relaxed, Mingyu withdrew himself from your swollen, sopping cunt. You looked up at him with a lazy smile, feeling completely satisfied but still hungry for more.
"Did you cum?" you asked, your voice laced with anticipation as you waited for his response.
Mingyu hesitated for a moment, but before he could answer, you cut him off with a mischievous grin, sticking your tongue out of your mouth playfully.
"Don't worry about that," he began, but you interrupted him, your eyes sparkling with mischief as you pleaded with him to cum for you.
"Come on, Mingyu," you urged, your voice dripping with desire. "I want to see you cum. I want to taste you on my tongue."
Mingyu's eyes widened in surprise at your boldness, but a wicked grin spread across his face as he realized just how much you wanted him. With a low growl of desire, he leaned in closer, his lips brushing against yours as he whispered his response.
"You're insatiable, aren't you?" he murmured, his voice thick with desire. "But I like it. I like it a lot."
As Mingyu gently arranged your hair, he positioned himself so that his cock was within reach of your mouth. You eagerly complied, your saliva mixed with your own lubrication serving as the perfect medium for him to stroke his throbbing cock.
With his heavy tip resting on your tongue, you felt the anticipation building within you once again. Your lips parted as you watched him with hungry eyes, eager to taste him once more.
Mingyu groaned softly as he began to masturbate his cock, the sensation of your tongue and lips against his sensitive skin driving him crazy. With each stroke, he grew harder and thicker in your mouth, his arousal evident in the way his cock throbbed against your tongue.
You moaned softly around him, the vibrations sending shivers of pleasure coursing through his body as he continued to pleasure himself with your eager mouth. And as his release approached, Mingyu's movements grew more urgent, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he edged closer and closer to the brink.
Finally, with a low growl of pleasure, Mingyu reached the point of no return, his cock pulsating as he spilled his hot cum onto your waiting tongue. You eagerly swallowed every drop, savoring the taste of him as he rode out the waves of his orgasm.
"I'm feeling so good," you murmur, a contented smile gracing your lips as you lay beside Mingyu.
"Do you?" he asks, his voice soft and filled with tenderness as he gazes at you.
You nod, feeling a warmth spreading through your body at his gentle touch. Mingyu brushes your hair away from your face, his fingers trailing lightly over your skin as he lays on his side, his eyes fixed on you with a look of adoration.
"Yeah," you reply, your voice barely above a whisper as you meet his gaze. "I feel amazing."
Mingyu smiles, his expression filled with affection as he leans in closer, pressing a tender kiss to your forehead. The atmosphere feels incredibly comfortable, more intimate and peaceful than ever before.
You blinked, the soft morning light filtering through the curtains as you slowly roused from sleep, only to find yourself alone in bed. The warmth of Mingyu's big body, which had been so comforting throughout the night, was noticeably absent, leaving you with a sense of emptiness.
As you sat up, rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you couldn't shake the feeling that the events of the previous night had been nothing more than a dream. But then, just as doubt began to creep in, the door swung open, and there stood Mingyu, shirtless and wearing only jeans, a tray of breakfast in his hands.
He flashed you a warm smile as he entered the room, the sight of him banishing any lingering doubts from your mind. "Good morning," he greeted you, his voice soft and filled with affection.
"Good morning," you replied, a smile tugging at the corners of your lips as you watched him approach. The sight of him, shirtless and bearing breakfast, made your heart skip a beat, and you couldn't help but feel a surge of warmth spread through you at the sight of him.
Mingyu set the tray down on the bedside table before climbing back into bed beside you, his warmth enveloping you once more. As you sat together, enjoying breakfast in each other's company.
In the middle of the afternoon, you was alone in your bedroom, Mrs. Kim appears with her phone, it was your parents, wanting to talk to you. You take the phone from Mrs. Kim with trembling hands, your heart racing with anticipation as you retreat to a secluded corner of the house. With bated breath, you answer the call, hoping against hope that it's your parents finally coming to rescue you from this unfamiliar place.
"Hello?" you say tentatively, the sound of your own voice echoing in your ears.
On the other end of the line, you hear your mother's voice, filled with concern and urgency. "Sweetheart, are you okay?" she asks, her tone fraught with worry.
You feel a surge of relief wash over you at the sound of her familiar voice. "Mom, it's me," you reply quickly, trying to keep your voice steady despite the emotions swirling inside you. "I'm okay, but I really want to come home. Can you please come get me? I need to tell you somethingâŚ"
There's a moment of silence on the other end of the line before your mother responds, her voice heavy with regret. "Honey, I'm sorry, but we can't come get you right now," she says, her words hitting you like a punch to the gut. "We need you to stay there for a little while longer."
Your heart sinks at her words, the sense of disappointment threatening to overwhelm you. "But why?" you ask, your voice cracking with emotion. "I don't understand."
Before you can say anything else, you hear a click on the other end of the line, signaling that the call has ended. With a heavy heart, you lower the phone from your ear and turn around, only to find Mingyu standing there, his expression hardened and unreadable.
You swallow hard, feeling a sense of unease settle over you as you meet his gaze. "Mingyu, I..." you begin, but he cuts you off with a curt shake of his head before turning and walking out of the room, leaving you alone with your thoughts and a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.
You ran after him, your footsteps echoing in the stillness of the countryside as you desperately called out his name. But Mingyu didn't turn to look at you, his gaze fixed on the horizon as he continued walking towards the lagoon.
"Mingyu, please," you pleaded, your voice thick with emotion as you struggled to catch up to him. "Listen to me."
He finally stopped walking, but he still didn't turn to face you. Instead, he spoke with a tone of resignation, his voice heavy with disappointment. "I understand now," he said quietly. "You were just using me to pass the time until you could go home."
Your heart sank at his words, the guilt weighing heavily on your chest as tears welled up in your eyes. "No, Mingyu, that's not true," you insisted, your voice trembling with emotion.
"I... I care about you. What about yesterday? What we shared..."
But he cuts you off with a bitter laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. "Yesterday was a mistake," he says, his words like a knife to your heart. "It doesn't change the fact that you were never really here for me. You were just biding your time until you could leave."
Your mouth hung open in shock as Mingyu's words sliced through you like a blade, leaving you reeling with hurt and disbelief. Tears welled up in your eyes as you struggled to comprehend his harsh accusations.
"That's mean!" you finally managed to choke out, your voice trembling with emotion. "I know I'm wrong, but you're being so mean right now!"
Mingyu's attention snapped back to you at the sound of your sobs, his heart clenching with regret as he watched the tears stream down your face. He hadn't meant to hurt you so deeply, but in his anger and frustration, his words had cut far deeper than he had intended.
For a moment, there was silence between you, the weight of Mingyu's harsh judgment hanging heavy in the air. And then, finally, you spoke again, your voice barely above a whisper.
"It was a mistake then?" you asked, your words barely audible over the sound of your own ragged breathing.Â
Mingyu hesitates, his own emotions swirling inside him as he struggles to find the right words. "No, it wasn't a mistake," he admits quietly, his gaze softening as he meets your tear-filled eyes. "Yesterday... what we shared... it meant something to me."
Your heart races as Mingyu's words sink in, a mix of hope and confusion swirling inside you. "Then why are you saying all of this?" you ask, your voice trembling with emotion. "If it meant something to you, then why..."
Mingyu cuts you off with a heavy sigh, his gaze dropping to the ground as he struggles to find the right words. "Because it's not going to work," he admits, his voice filled with resignation. "You're going back to your expensive bags and imported cars, and I'm going to be alone."
His words hit you like a punch to the gut, the realization of what he's saying sending a surge of pain through your chest. "But how can you be sure that I want to go home?" you protest, desperation creeping into your voice. "You didn't even heard the whole conversation. I need to go home, yes, but not because I want to leave you. I need to go home to tell my parents, my friends, that I want to stay here."
Mingyu's shoulders sag at your words, a flicker of hope shining in his eyes. "You want to stay?" he asks, his voice barely above a whisper.
You nod, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes. "Yes," you say softly. "And do you know what made up my mind?"
Mingyu's gaze searches yours, waiting for your answer.
"You did," you admit, your voice barely a whisper as you meet his gaze. "You and this life... it made me feel something real. Something I've never felt before."
For a moment, there's a glimmer of understanding in Mingyu's eyes, a flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, things could work out between you. He takes a step towards you, reaching out as if to touch you, but you step back, your heart still raw from his earlier words.
"I'm hurt," you whisper, your voice breaking with emotion. "And I need some time alone to figure things out."
With that, you turn and walk away, leaving Mingyu standing there, his gaze following you with a mixture of longing and regret. And as you disappear from view, you can't help but wonder if you've made the right decision... or if you've just made a terrible mistake.
Mingyu stands in the doorway, his expression pensive as he takes in the sight of you curled up on the bed, your breath trembling from your recent tears. He hesitates for a moment, unsure of how to approach you, before finally taking a step into the room.
"I... I wanted to talk to you," he begins, his voice soft and hesitant. "I know things have been... difficult between us lately, and I just wanted to say..."
He pauses, struggling to find the right words as he searches your face for any sign of understanding. "When I first heard that a rich girl was coming to our farm, I'll admit, I had my doubts," he admits, his gaze dropping to the floor as he speaks. "I thought you would be like all the others â snobbish, entitled, looking down on us like we were beneath you."
He takes a deep breath, steeling himself for what comes next. "But you proved me wrong," he continues, his voice growing stronger with each word. "You learned everything we taught you, you got along with everyone, and... despite our bickering, you seemed so genuine."
Mingyu's words hang in the air, the weight of his apology lingering between you. He takes a step closer, his eyes pleading for understanding as he searches your face for any sign of forgiveness.
"I'm sorry," he says, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry for the way I've treated you, for the things I've said. I was wrong to judge you based on where you come from, and... I hope you can forgive me."
There's a vulnerability in Mingyu's voice that tugs at your heartstrings, a sincerity that you can't ignore. You feel a lump form in your throat as you meet his gaze, seeing the regret and remorse etched in his features.
"I... I forgive you," you whisper, your voice barely audible as you speak. "And... I'm sorry too. For the way I've acted, for... everything."
Mingyu's eyes soften at your words, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Thank you," he says, his voice filled with gratitude. "And... I hope we can start over. Put all this behind us and... move forward."
In the bustling city where love often feels like just another commodity, you found something rare and precious in the countryside with Mingyu â an intense and fast connection that seemed to defy all logic and expectation. It was as if you could parachute jump into this feeling without a second thought, without fear of falling.

Hey lovie - I'm having a little brain rot and I had to get this out but what about the 141 boys arriving home to their sweet lil reader who's become a sex crazed monster cos they're ovulating? Like the boys have the cycle app downloaded so they KNOW how they are but they were not prepared for the level of horny they're coming home to.
(sorry if this is rambly)
oooo. i love this. :3
cw: pure horny, price is an old man (lovingly), fem!gn!reader
ghost is mildly surprised. he knows you get extremely horny when you ovulate, but this.. os a new level. you practically pounce at him when he walks through that door, he catches you in a tight hug, dropping his bag. After whispering some sweet 'I missed you's he can feel your teeth on his neck, before the heat radiating off your cunt reaches his body, eyes widening slightly. "needy, are we?" he hums softly, earning himself a harsh bite. "fuck- christ, love.." he muttered, cock twitching in his pants as he carries you into bed, definitely prepared to fuck you out for a good while.
Gaz is a sweetheart, the tight hug you trap him in is another reminder of just how much he missed you while he was gone. he kisses your head and cups your face, looking down at you, just to see you eye him hungrily. the looks would make him uncomfortable if it was from anyone but you; but you made his cock twitch with it. "y'need something darlin'?" he teases quietly, grin playing across his lips as you practically pull him into the bedroom - or the nearest surface at this point - ready to take whatever he can give you.
Soap is a horny fuck, just like you are. he loves when you ovulate, knowing he gets to have hours of fun if he wants, hours of playing with you and making you feel good. however this time is a whole new level, even for him. he stumbles back when you immediately attack him, pressing your lips against his and your tongue into his mouth. "missed y'so much.." you practically growl against his skin, hands quickly opening his pants without giving him much time to think. fuck, if you let him he'll take you right there against the front door.
Price is a bit slower to take on it, he knows how you are when you ovulate, barely able to hold up due to his age. don't get me wrong, he can definitely fuck the attitude out of you when he needs (or wants) to, but this one? he's in over his head and he knows it when you pounce on him as he gets through the door. lips all over him along with your hands, he chuckles. "careful lovie, let me get home, yea?" he hums, pushing you off gently. he definitely does take it to the bedroom in a second, giving you his all and then some. more than happy to have you ride him when he's too exhausted to rut into you anymore.
