ALRIGHT!!! I am so excited to talk about this I am obsessed at the moment - SO:

i’ve always had pimples / big pores / oily skin (since I hit puberty at ~10 years old, adolescence was a reeeal long drag) and until really recently I’d pretty much subscribed to the idea that if you have oily / acne-prone skin you need to to keep moisture and oil away from it and basically nuke it with scrubs, salt, stuff that dries it out, benzoyl peroxide etc. it never fixed me but I kept it up because I’m a bit dumb I guess?? 

anyway recently my girl Stephanie got me onto something they’re calling “Asian Beauty” (at least that’s what the subreddit is called) - surprisingly it’s less racial stereotyping and more a shorthand for the completely different approach to looking after your skin that’s popular in Japan / Korea / China / Taiwan. 

i have only just started adopting some of this stuff and it’s already completely changed my liiiiiiiife. i’ve switched to a super-gentle cleanser with an acid pH (CeraVe Foaming Cleanser), i use those awesome sheet masks on the regs (started out as just for fun but they really do a lot for plumping / smoothing your skin out), i moisturise a bunch, plus i’ve started using a Korean brand of BB cream that is SO much better and SO much cheaper than my old BB cream that it kind of makes me sick ($15 vs. $60 why was I wasting my precious cash on Bobbi Brown!!!!!)

BUT i reckon the thing that has made the most difference is chemical exfoliation. it sounds terrifying but it’s much, much better for your skin than physical exfoliation like scrubs and brushes. i use Paula’s Choice products, a 2% BHA liquid followed by an 8% AHA gel - you’ve got to wait about 20 minutes between the two because of some pH nonsense, and AHA makes you photosensitive so I’ve been piling on the sunscreen (also a Korean brand, very wearable and not greasy), AND if you use them too much it can cause dryness - but i use mine every evening and my pores are smaller, my face is smoother, i use less makeup, i’m less oily, the tiny wrinkles i was starting to spot have VANISHED and life is good. am keen to see what summer will be like. if i make it through without massive breakouts i will consider this whole endeavour a success.

i really like all this junk because it seems to be backed up by actual dermatological studies and then bolstered by massive communities of skincare nerds’ shared experience - have a look at that Asian Beauty subreddit and this one as well for a bunch study sources etc. the next thing i’m going to get into is vitamin C treatment, to see if i can fade some sun damage / hyperpigmentation and stay ~youthful~ as long as possible, and after that it’s a beautiful rainbow of fun skin stuff to drop a bunch of money and time into, which is what i really like doing, apparently.

i am still learning but i am very excited by this as you can see. ok end of story :))))

Excuse the poor photography skills but as requested, here is what I ate at the Japanese/Brazilian fusion place Ikibana in Barcelona. This was the weekday lunch menu for €12, I had this a few months ago now and have forgotten some of the details so please forgive me. The first dish and my favourite was the sesame salad, then the fried chicken with japanese mayo wasn't actually cooked through so I sent it back and got a tofu noodle dish instead but I forgot to take a photo :/ The sushi was good and so was the little cheesecake desert, though I am not a sweets person. The food overall wasn't that special, but the salad was tasty and the service was excellent and at €12 with all you can drink wine/beer I was full and quite drunk and would therefore go back.
