I'm finally done! I've been working on this since the end of last month
Mark and Danny got into a bit of trouble
These two were perfect for this meme
Principal Rollins: Alright Soldiers, I've called you all to this meeting because some of us don't seem to get along!
Mark and Danny: ????????
Mark: Me and Danny are literally the only ones here
Principal Rollins: Regardless, blah blah blah blah
Danny and Mark: This is all your fault!

Impossible (Monster Buster Club drabble)
SUMMARY:  Danny reveals to his childhood Cathy about his crush on her, but sadly there's no way for the two to ever become a couple due to their species and age difference.
Links:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21619306
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13443117/1/Impossible
Long ago there was this challenge, where you had to listen to the same song on loop to write a drabble inspired by it and a few days ago I had this song in mind and two ships I'd like to do that for. Danny and Cathy are one of the ships. (Note: I haven't watched Monster Buster Club for years and might not correspond canon to 100%) This one-shot is set 2 years later after the "Goodbye Earth" episode. The Soundtrack I was inspired by was "Frozer Intro" from Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
On a large flower field planted with various-colored roses a giant alien had tramped over half of the field squeezing all the flowers over the field and down on the ground were the four members of the secret intergalactic organization Monster Buster Club, MBC for short, dealing with the ET.
“Watch out!” Shouted Sam, the leader of the MBC as a tall octopus-like creature raised his sword up aiming the boy in the blue-neon lightened suit, that stood in front of the alien aiming it with his sonar blaster, then a pair of hands pulled the boy away from the side and the boy landed beside a blonde with a pink-neon lightened suit and glanced down at the tan-skinned guy.
“Thanks, Cathy” The boy said looking up at the covered eyes of the girl.
“Chris prepare the Alien flasher to paralyze it,” Cathy ordered, then took her blaster and looked at Danny. “We run together against the octovore and when he uses his sword, I jump up and you shoot him with the X-blaster and Sam uses the vacuvador,” The blonde explained earning a nod from the brunette boy in the dark suit with the red neonlight-like color.
“Got it!” Both sprinted together at the giant alien, which growled and moved his sword down at the duo and the two friends split and moved away from each other, letting the villain hit with the sword on the ground and Cathy leaped up high approaching the head of the one-eyed octovore and took out her blaster from her suit’s belt and shot laser rays into the alien’s eyes, causing it to yell and cover his eyes with two of his tentacles and down Danny and Chris aimed with the X-blaster the alien to freeze his movements, so he couldn’t do anything more to harm the Monster Buster Club after that the tan-skinned girl in the yellow suit ran at the alien and activated her vacuvador by pressing a button on her blaster, making it transform into a large weapon and turned it on, shooting a light blue ray at the alien shrinking the alien and sucking it into the vacuvador. The weapon beeped and a small cylinder-formed jar jumped out of the top of the weapon with the alien inside it.
“Great job guys” Samantha complimented his friends, which reunited all together on the sidewalk next to the flower field.
“How are we going to explain this to Mr. Smith or Commander Zubin?” Chris asked looking at the group, which shrugged their shoulders.
“Lately these missions have gotten harder with the time and the destruction caused by the fights has also become higher than usual” Danny mentioned. “Do we actually have some sort of insurance, that covers these things up?”
“I think not. We are meant to fight invisible…..you know….we can’t let them see us” Cathy explained earning a nod from the group.
“You know what we could use?” Questioned Chris. “Other suits, that hide our identity more”
“Yeah like two years ago I was so embarrassed when Joshua saw me like that” Samantha mentioned earning a nod from the group.
“Josh was a douche anyway Sam. Thank goodness they erased his head after that” The brunette Canadian noticed looking at the tan-skinned girl.
“I know, just was the only time I remember to be caught” Samantha mentioned pressing on her V-com on her pulse and looked at the road to see a large, black vehicle appear and stop in front of the group.
“Cathy will you and Danny look here, if the alien left any evidence, that could prove their existence?” Sam questioned earning a thumb up from Cathy.
“We will talk with your grandfather and we will see how we’re going to do” Sam told the blonde girl, then the doom-like roof of the car opened up and Samantha jumped into the car along with Chris, afterward the two drove away as they closed the dome leaving the other two friends back.
“Bye guys” Cathy said waving at the two friends leaving, then Cathy turned around to look at the field fully destroyed, half of the rose were crushed down on the ground and many parts of the earth could be seen from far. “I think the best thing would be, if we look from up the sky to see, where we could start to look first, what do you think?” Cathy asked looking to the side to see Danny picking up a few flowers from the field. “Danny?” Cathy called seeing Danny look back at her and smile. “What are you doing?” The Rhapsodian-descendant girl asked watching Danny approach her and place his right knee on the floor and standing with the left one looking at the blonde, holding the small flower bouquet at the blonde girl.
“Oh they’re good” Cathy mentioned smiling and Danny reached them closer to her.
“They’re for you” Danny mentioned making Cathy raise her left eyebrow a little surprised.
“Oh….” Cathy responded at Danny’s sweet gesture and looked around, realizing they were the only ones. “But Jeremy is not here, why are you doing that?”
“Because…..I love you” Danny responded a very little hint of hesitation, making Cathy smile a little. “I know this not the right place or the perfect moment, but Cathy I want you to know, that after that kiss we had on that night we kicked Nossida in his butt….that we belong to each other”
“Danny, that’s sweet but…..It shouldn’t have happened” Cathy mentioned making Danny roll his eyes in attraction as the blonde, then got up.
“That’s what I thought too on that night, but I couldn’t forget about it. I felt like I was in heaven, it was…..”
“Danny….”
“I always thought that Wendy was the girl I love, but I never could stand a chance with her due to her bad character….you, on the other hand, are my best friend and we….”
“Danny!” Cathy hissed loud placing her index and middle finger over his lips, making him wide his eyes and roll his eyes down at her well-refined fingernails. “I can’t be together with you”
“But…..I always thought you felt something for me….I mean…. I have always got that feeling, every time you had put that sweet smile on your face, the times you looked at me when we were all with our friends meant you were into me”
“Yes you are right there. I like you too, but between is there is no possibility for us to ever be a couple like Mark is with Wendy or Chris together with Sam. We can’t be like that”
“Why not?” Danny asked raising his eyebrows up sad at Cathy’s words. “We both are in love. We could come together if we both want it. Don’t you want that?” The brunette questioned earning a nod from Cathy.
“I would love it Danny, but this is impossible for us. What about our future” Cathy questioned. “When we both get older?”
“Well…...I don’t know”
“We Rhapsodians live up to 20083 years. The day I’ll become an adult Rhapsodian, you’ll be over 100 years. This won’t ever work out”
“But…..there has to be a way for us to make it work. A potion or something magical or anything, that can turn me into a Rhapsodian or….you into a human. There must be something?!?” Danny mentioned nervously at the realization of the age scale between the humans and the Rhapsodians.
“Unfortunately, there is no such thing that could help us out according to grandfather” Cathy responded. “I have asked him this a couple of days ago…..I’m so sorry Danny” Cathy apologized looking up with her bluebell eyes into the emerald green eyes of his best friend, which had a single tear running his face down at the confirmation of the blonde girl. Danny sighed and looked at the flowers he had plucked for the girl.
Cathy observed the brunette boy with a sad face, then furrowed her eyebrows as she heard sirens coming from the end of the road, where Sam had disappeared along with Chris.
“Danny we have to go. The police might want to check this here out” Cathy warned earning a nod from the boy, then she ran off the opposite direction from where the sound came and Danny took a look at the messed up field sad, dropping the small bouquet of roses and he ambled off the same direction Cathy went leaving the location, where they fought the alien.

Chillin’ With Netflix (2018 edition)
LOST IN SPACE
Really well done, family friendly space opera.  Top notch production values, good / smart writing, superlative cast.
And despite all this, it couldn’t keep my attention past episode 4.
I put the blame on me, not this new series by writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
As a preteen, I was in the prime target audience for the original Lost In Space back in the mid-1960s, and that series -- despite its wildly varying tone -- created an iconic show that, try as they might, every subsequent re-make struggles to overcome.
Seriously, it’s like trying to remake I Love Lucy only without Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley.
Yeah, it can be done, but why bother?  Use that talent and energy to do something in the same vein but different.
That being said, I deny no one their pleasure.  If you haven’t seen / loved the original, try this version; you might very well like it.
. . .
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
Excellent production / writing / cast / performances.
I started out really liking it.
That enthusiasm faded.
I ended up enjoying this new retelling of The Haunting Of Hill House but came away feeling it fell short of 1963’s The Haunting, the first and still best adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic ghost story.
First off, a definition of terms (which will explain my enthusiasm fade):  In order to work, a ghost story must take place in the audience’s head.
That is to say, the reader / viewer must be left with two equally possibly yet mutually exclusive possibilities:  There are such things as ghost, or the haunting is purely psychological in the mind/s of the character/s.
Even in stories such as the original novel or the 1963 film where the possibility is presented that at least one of the characters is mentally unstable and is either imagining / causing the manifestations, the book / movie / series must never come down concretely in either camp.
To make it purely psychological turns it into a drama about mental illness, the make it supernatural moves it from the realm of “ghost story” into “monster movie” where the monster happens to be a ghost.
A ghost story doesn’t have to be scary, simply…haunting.  Portrait Of Jenny is a bitter-sweet romance that despite a lack of spookiness remains a bona fide ghost story.
(Ghost comedies such as Topper, Blythe Spirit, Ghost Busters, etc. are a different genre entirely akin to leprechaun / alien comedies where a fantastic being disrupts the lives of the human protagonists.)
This version works well, even though it doesn’t maintain the high level it starts with.  The family dynamics are well done, the performances excellent.
For the first couple of episodes the series tries to walk the line, raising the possibility and eventually confirming that mental illness runs through the family that moved into Hill House, but the moment the ghosts begin manifesting themselves, it paradoxically stops being a ghost story and becomes a booga-booga story).  Virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity also works against the production, occasionally dragging audiences out of the story to admire how clever the film makers are.
It also gets a little too convoluted and overly melodramatic towards the end, however (ghost stories work best at their simplicity.
And it is not an upbeat ending but a really horrific one as the family in question literally consumes itself.
This version inhabits a godless universe, and the apparent “good” ending is really a terrible one of eternal damnation (albeit not in the Christian sense).
I recognize and appreciate the level of craftsmanship that went into this, and recommend it to people who like scary stories.
But it ain’t what I’d call a ghost story, and it sure ain’t what Jackson would call one, either.
. . .
SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER
I'm not the target audience for She-Ra in either incarnation.
That being said, I watched episodes 1-3 and 12-13.
It looks good to me.  The story was familiar, but like old B-Westerns it's the kind of genre where familiarity breeds affection, so no complaints there.
Pacing seemed slow, but the design and animation was good, voices top notch. Clearly a heavy anime influence.
Really liked the wide range of physical types and acknowledgement of LGBT characters. Lots of fun with the various interpersonal relationships and characterizations, especially Swift Wind, the smartass flying unicorn.
They did a really good job with this show and the characters seemed more like real teens than the previous incarnation.
. . .
THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS
Well, this one I can recommend whole heartedly and without reservation.
Joel and Ethan Coen have shown a remarkable penchant for period films and a strong affinity for Westerns in the past, and this anthology film offers a dazzling grab bag of good / off beat stories that range from the ridiculous to the realistic, though a couple of them are Westerns by location only as they don’t really rely on any of the themes that define the Western genre.
The stories are:
“The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs” -- a hilarious send up of old Hollywood Western clichés starting with the quintessential sing cowboy trope and spiraling into full bore craziness from there.
“Near Algodones” -- a would-be bank robber has a really bad day.  Despite its dazzling editorial style, one of the more conventional stories -- and yet it manages to evoke both classic Buddhism, the crucifixion, and the ultimate sardonic joke all in the last 30 seconds.
“Meal Ticket” -- a Twilight Zone-ish story about a backwoods impresario and his limbless performer, told almost entirely silently except for quotes from poems and dramatic works and the occasional song.  While it makes good use of its Western locale, there’s really nothing in the story to tie it to the West; it could just as easily occur on a Mississippi riverboat, the back alleys of White Chapel, or the slums of Mumbai.
“All Gold Canyon” -- based on a story by Jack London, it’s a look at how hard and demanding a prospector’s life could be (with a virtually unrecognizable Tom Waits as the grizzled old prospector).  The Coen Brothers use their location to the fullest advantage, recreating the feel of what such land must have felt like before the first settlers moved in.
“The Gal Who Got Rattled” -- the longest, most realistic, and most bitter-sweet of the stories, set on a wagon train heading to Oregon, and focusing on a young woman who is definitely not the sort who should be making such a trip.  While we can look back from our safe vantage point in the 21stcentury and recognize the Indian Wars were the direct result of rapacious land grabbing by Western settlers, this story does an excellent job of showing just how terrifying it would be to sit on the receiving end of a tribal attack.  The ending is a morally complex one, well worth pondering, and especially ambiguous given the nature of the story’s framing element.
“The Mortal Remains” -- weakest of the stories, but salvaged by strong performances.  Another Twilight Zone style story, and if you didn’t guess the ending by the one minute mark I’ve got a bridge in Florida made of solid gold bricks I’d like to sell you.
. . .
AMERICAN VANDAL
Yowza!  This is one of the best series I’ve ever seen, and it’s perfect in damn near every way.
On the surface it’s a parody of various true crime documentary series, especially Netflix’ own Making A Murderer.  It’s told from the point of view of two students in their high school’s audio-visual club who make a documentary about an act of vandalism directed at the school’s teachers and the student who is blamed for it.
Of course, as they investigate, they turn up evidence that the accused student did not commit the vandalism, and in their pursuit of the truth uncover several more secrets on their way to the big reveal.
At first blush, the makings of a solid show.
But what co-creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault manage to pull off with this is nothing short of astounding, a fun parody of a genre that raises interesting questions about both the genre they’re parodying and the issue of truth and guilt, while on top of that adding an incredibly complex yet easy to follow overlay of conflicting characters and emotions.
They get every single detail right, and even seemingly throw away lines / scenes / characters get fleshed out in amazing and unexpected ways (for example, one extremely minor character, with no significant dialog, who appears only briefly on camera as comic relief in one or two early episodes is later revealed to be severely alcoholic, and in recalling his earlier appearances, one realizes the character must be suffering through a genuinely hellish existence).
Dylan, the accused student, starts out as a character of fun and amusement, a high school goofball of Spicoli proportions, only to come to a sad and ultimately terrifying end as he realizes just how dumb and dead-end his life is.
I cannot praise thise series enough.  Very rarely will I look at someone else’s work and say “I wish I had done that.” American Vandal is one of the rare exceptions.
The series has two seasons, the first involving Dylan and the vandalism of the teachers’ cars, the second involving a food poisoning incident at a private school the original two students are invited to investigate.  Season two is very strong but lacks “the shock of the new” that season one provided; it’s high quality and entertaining, but not as compelling as the original.

We’ve come to Day 6 of our time with the McFly family -- perfect time for a double birthday, is it not? Yes as I said at the end of my last update, I’m doing some aging up in this save file, and that includes Marty and Jennifer! Look, they have two school-age children now -- they’re past being Young Adults, no matter what the game’s Long lifespans say.
Of course, being a benevolent Sim God (mostly), I wasn’t going to age them up without something to mark the occasion. So, once the kids had finished their morning playtime and were off to school, I had Jennifer whip up a cake, and phone up Victor, Wheatley, Emmett, Nikal, and Eric to see if they’d be interested in attending a dual birthday party for her and Marty over at Discotheque Pan Europa in Windenburg!
. . .and then I ended up doing it all again because the first time I tried this party, there was a raging thunderstorm in Windenburg, Victor and Wheatley mysteriously vanished shortly after arriving, and Jennifer started eating the cake before I could set it out with the candles. -.- Pro-tip: if you’re making a cake to bring to another location for a party, put the candles/topper on it FIRST. If your Sim is the least bit hungry, they’ll start chowing down straight from their inventory. Ugh. . .
Anyway, the second go-round, as you can see, went way better. The weather was nicer, all the guests actually stayed to chat, and I was able to improve upon everyone’s favorite dance club with an arcade machine! I actually haven’t used this four-player monster much in my game, so it was interesting to actually put some Sims on it and see what resulted. It -- looks really fun! Reminds me of those multi-player arcades you get at places like Dave & Busters. :) I mean, yeah, we still need single-player versions of these machines, but as a party activity for the gang (and a way to fulfill the “have Sims play a game” goal), it certainly worked out just fine!
But surely getting the arcade on wasn’t the only thing everyone did at this party. . .

Let’s play a game~
I wanted to share some good animes/mangas/cartoons and discover new ones so I created this tag/ask thing.
Rule: List in alphabet order the animes/mangas/cartoons you started/like/love or was disappointed by, give your top 10 or 5, and let your followers know what you actually followed so for instance, they ask you a letter (ex here: “I - I – Ikoku Meiro no Croisée, Inuyasha”  and you give your opinion about those :D) or for a few names.
Here’s my manga/anime top list only:
One Piece
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Angel Beats
Boku no Hero Academia
Yuri on Ice!!!
Noragami
Code Geass
Dawn of the Arcana
Can’t give a top 10 ;-; (those are the ones that greatly marked me on a long run - or recently for BnHA and YoI)
Numbers – 07 Ghost

3rd batch of Monster Buster Club art dump
With a mini comic of Danny and Mark!
Still tweaking Danny's alien form
Also this is a common interaction between these 2 when they aren't arguing and trying to show each other up
Danny's so used to ignoring Mark that he genuinely doesn't even realize he's around at this point
Mark obviously hates this but never learns

Disney MGM Studios Opening Day Celebration Aired on NBC
What Do Michael Eisner, Harry Anderson, Ashford and Simpson, George Burns, Joy Monica and Leanna Creel, Walter Cronkite, Jane Fonda, John Forsythe, Estelle Getty, George S Irving, Kate Jackson, Rue McClanahan, Ann Miller, Eve Montand, Willie Nelson, Buster Poindexter, The Pointer Sisters, Stephanie Powers, Tony Randall, John Ritter, Smokey Robinson, Mickey Rooney, Suzanne Somers, James Stewart, Dick van Dyke,  Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Lech Walesa all have in common?
They all participated in the Walt Disney World MGM Studios Opening Day Television Special; well maybe not together, but they were on the same telecast on April 30th 1989.
30 years ago, Disney MGM Studios opened to the public and with only 5 opening day attractions: The Great Movie Ride, The Backstage Studio Tour, The Magic of Disney Animation Tour, The Monster Sound Show and Superstar Television.  MGM Studios was the definition of a half day park.  The Great Movie Ride was the last opening day attraction at MGM studios until it closed August 13, 2017, marking the end of an era.  The recently opened International Gateway at EPCOT Center allowed guests to board a tram to MGM Studios then return to EPCOT Center later that same day.  The tram pickup was where the Skyline Station is currently being built, and the ride included views of the still under construction Swan & Dolphin and Yacht & Beach Club.
youtube
Being a Disney history buff, I find it fascinating to look back at how Disney positioned the opening of the new park.  The Hollywood that always was, and never will be; at the time, it was a working studio giving you a look at how movies and television shows are made.  After Animal Kingdom opened in 1998, there were lots of rumors of a 5th gate at Walt Disney World, another theme park.  I think it’s safe to say that with the changes at Disney Hollywood Studios over the last 5 years, they have created that new theme park while we were watching and paying admission to Studios.   It’s clear the new Hollywood studios, if that’s the name, will immerse us into the movies, not behind the scenes of the movies.
I hope you enjoy this look back at Hollywood Studio’s opening day as much as I do!

Every MLB team’s best Winter Meetings rumor, graded
The Yankees might end up with Noah Syndergaard? The Dodgers might end up with Corey Kluber? It’s not wild yet, but it’s getting there.
Do you like waiver claims? Then, boy, would you have liked the first day of the 2018 MLB Winter Meetings. Carlos Asuaje was claimed! Mike Gerber was claimed! Just a bunch of GMs hanging around Vegas, claiming each other’s stuff when they aren’t looking.
But there are still rumors floating around. Actual rumors. Our job today is to look at these rumors and grade them. More specifically, we need to find the best rumor for each team and grade it.
There aren’t any signings, and there weren’t any great trades. So how are the rumors looking? Are they at least good rumors, the kind that allow us to close our eyes and imagine the sheer chaos and dread?
Some of them, yeah. Here are the hottest rumors around Major League Baseball at the moment:
Arizona Diamondbacks
In wake of Goldschmidt deal, #DBacks drawing trade interest in virtually all their players, but telling clubs they are not interested in a teardown, sources tell The Athletic. AZ open-minded, but will be selective in how it proceeds. Not entering rebuilding mode.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 10, 2018
Yeah, that’s cute, Diamondbacks, but a team that trades Paul Goldschmidt after losing Patrick Corbin and A.J. Pollock is rebuilding. We don’t make the rules, here. Sorry if that’s a drag, but you literally traded your best player for prospects after losing your best pitcher. Don’t play the semantic shuffle with us.
Now, if the Diamondbacks were saying things like, “Ideally, we’re looking for players ready for the majors or close to it because we’re not interested in a rebuild. We want a quick reload,” I could dig it. As is, though ...
Grade: D
Atlanta Braves
Some teams have gotten the sense the Braves are willing to trade both Inciarte and Foltynewicz. Acuna's presence make Inciarte understandable. To move Folty, the Braves would likely need to fill multiple needs and/or have the confidence another deal would land a front-line SP
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) December 10, 2018
Ah, I love the idea that a win-now team is confident enough to trade one of its better young starters. Because Mike Foltynewicz is young and affordable, he should fetch a high price. Because the Braves are stacked with pitching prospects, they can afford to gamble and trade Foltynewicz at what could be his highest value.
The team that had Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, and Kris Medlen at the same time should definitely not worry about depth. What’s the worst that could happen?
Or is the argument that a team that had Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, and Kris Medlen at the same time should be way more inclined to trade a young arm because those things are inherently unpredictable?
I think the larger point is that pitchers are confusing and so are the Braves.
Grade: B+
Baltimore Orioles
Elias said he’s interviewed 6 manager candidates in person. There won’t be any more. #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) December 11, 2018
See, this is the thing about an abominable team: Even the rumors suck. One of the managerial candidates is Manny Acta, and another one is ... that guy with the hat ... look, I fell asleep reading the list. It’s entirely possible that this manager is the one who shepherds the Orioles back from the abyss — look at how little excitement there was about the Braves and Brian Snitker, for example — but right now, it’s just not a sexy rumor.
The Orioles won’t be a part of a sexy rumor until July 16, 2020. Savor it when it comes. It will be about the Dodgers wanting to trade for the player who breaks out in 2019, but savor it when it comes.
Grade: F
Boston Red Sox
Robertson and Ottavino are believed high on Red Sox list of back-end relief targets. Of course they’d like to have Kimbrel and Kelly back but they are free agents too. Deep pen market also includes Britton, Miller, Familia, more.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 9, 2018
This is a peak We Just Won The World Series rumor. Just tinkerin’ over here. We have the best team, la la lalala. There will be no JD Martinez this year, and that’s fine. The last one helped them win the World Series, after all.
Grade: C
Chicago Cubs
Several teams have inquired on Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber but they’ve all gotten the same response from #Cubs. No, he’s not available
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) December 9, 2018
Is there anything more boring than a We Just Won The World Series rumor? Yes. The Cubs aren’t in on Bryce Harper. They don’t have Patrick Corbin. They’re not trading for Sonny Gray. We don’t even have a stray Sonny Gray rumor. Every team has a stray Sonny Gray rumor.
This, of course, means that they’re going to trade Kyle Hendricks and Anthony Rizzo in a six-way deal for Kyler Murray and Aaron Judge. But for now ...
Grade: F
Chicago White Sox
From Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:
They are still taking calls on first baseman Jose Abreu, but there’s an organizational debate on whether they should move him before the big money starts or keep him.
It’s a boring rumor, but don’t forget that the White Sox still have one piece to pawn. I know they don’t want to trade Abreu after his worst season, but if teams are interested in your soon-to-be expensive, two-tool, 32-year-old first baseman, you have to consider it.
(And if you’re the Rockies, a team that’s struggled to find half-decent first basement since Justin Morneau left, you have to be curious about the giant dinger monster that the bad team is curiously reluctant to deal.)
Grade: B
Cincinnati Reds
#Yankees shooting high with Sonny Gray, asked #Reds about 1 of top prospects, OF Taylor Trammell, which was a no go. Sign NYY can get something good for Gray or that they simply or asking high before settling low, Could also always partner with a prospect to get more.
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) December 10, 2018
BRIAN CASHMAN: It’s like that scene from The Office where Michael Scott puts his own name under Wayne Gretzky’s “You miss 100 percent of the shots that you don’t take” quote.
— Grant Brisbee
Grade: B+
Cleveland Indians
From Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
The Tampa Bay Rays, coming off an unexpected 90-win season, are looking to upgrade their offense for the season ahead in the AL East.
They’re evaluating several players who could help them, including Yandy Diaz and Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians.
Those are two very different things! Edwin Encarnacion is an ultra-expensive 36-year-old who just put up his worst OPS+ in seven years, and it came with a noticeable decline in his contact and walk rates. Yandy Diaz is a young, inexpensive 27-year-old who probably should have had a job somewhere two years ago. The former makes no sense. The latter makes all of the sense.
Grant Brisbee is in the market for a 2011 Toyota Tundra with 115,000 miles or a new spice rack.
Well, I guess both of those are true, so I stand corrected. Perhaps it’s a package thing, where the Rays take on Encarnacion’s $25.7 million salary and raise their payroll to $26 million, and their reward is a nice, owner-friendly player with oodles of potential. I don’t know if this works, but it’s a heckuva rumor.
Grade: A
Colorado Rockies
Rockies are serious about upgrading at first base. They made a sincere trade offer to Arizona for Paul Goldschmidt before his trade to St. Louis, Jeff Bridich said. He was not, however, surprised by the Cardinals as Goldschmidt’s end spot.
— Nick Groke (@nickgroke) December 11, 2018
Since Todd Helton retired in 2013, the Rockies have had exactly one season with a first baseman who finished with 2 WAR, and that was in 2014. They spent a lot of money to get a shortstop-turned-outfielder to play first, and that was a debacle.
They should probably get serious about upgrading at first base.
Grade: B+
Detroit Tigers
Source: #Dodgers interested in #Tigers OF Nick Castellanos via trade, but there’s no present momentum toward a deal. Dodgers active on numerous fronts and Castellanos is not their highest priority. @MLBNetwork @MLB
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) December 11, 2018
Like the White Sox and Abreu, it’s Sunday afternoon at 2:40 p.m., and the garage sale weekend is almost over. If you want a handful of Herb Alpert records, you can just take them. But there’s still something there, something in the corner. Something valuable ... yes, this just might be ...
Castellanos can hit. He should also be kept away from a National League team by a court order. So while the idea makes sense, I’m not sure the destination does. The Tigers should definitely get something while the numbers are up, though, and I would definitely expect him to move this winter.
Grade: B+
Houston Astros
From Buster Olney:
On paper, Eovaldi seemed like the perfect fit for the Houston Astros, who have a history of taking pitchers with really good arms and making them better. But the Astros never really engaged on the right-hander
From Evan Drellich:
There were 4 finalists for Nate Eovaldi, source says. Eovaldi himself said he gave a lot of consideration to Houston bc it's home. Angels indeed one of the other. Yankees were in on Eovaldi, but may not have been finalist. Eovaldi decided early he would only go to winning team.
— Evan Drellich (@EvanDrellich) December 10, 2018
RUMOR FIGHT RUMOR FIGHT RUMOR FIGHT
This isn’t to pick on either writer, just a note that these conflicting notes are about a deal that’s already done. There’s no reason for skulduggery from the teams involved at this point. And if cables can get crossed in that situation, imagine how screwed up rumors can get when they’re being spread by teams looking to gain an advantage over their rivals.
What I’m trying to say is this is all useless and we’d be much better off not following any of this until March 1.
But then we’d miss out on the endorphins. Open wide and eat your endorphins.
(There aren’t a lot of good Astros rumors right now, just like with the Cubs and Red Sox. Winning the World Series makes you soft, kids.)
Grade: F
Kansas City Royals
Dayton Moore on if he's still getting calls about Whit Merrifield: "Not as much. We’ve pretty much made it clear we want Whit Merrifield to be part of our team."
— Jeffrey Flanagan (@FlannyMLB) December 10, 2018
There are approximately 48 different second basemen available, either through trades or free agency, so don’t blame the Royals here. There’s also no shame in keeping at least one fan favorite around. It’s a long season, and you still want to sell tickets.
Keep this good player. For the fans. They’re so cold and lonely.
It’s a pretty lousy rumor, though.
Grade: D (upgraded from F because it’s kind of unfair that a Billy Hamilton rumor would have improved their grade substantially)
Los Angeles Angels
There were 4 finalists for Nate Eovaldi, source says. Eovaldi himself said he gave a lot of consideration to Houston bc it's home. Angels indeed one of the other. Yankees were in on Eovaldi, but may not have been finalist. Eovaldi decided early he would only go to winning team.
— Evan Drellich (@EvanDrellich) December 10, 2018
The Angels are so lame, I had to reuse a tweet for the first time. They want a starting pitcher, and until they get one, I’m putting the ENTIRE blame for the slow Winter Meetings on them. Once they get someone/anyone, the floodgates will open. Until then, here’s a rumor about someone they almost got.
I was almost on Wheel of Fortune once. That knowledge is just as valuable to me as almost getting Eovaldi should be to the Angels.
Grade: F
Los Angeles Dodgers
Source: #Indians interested in #Dodgers OF Alex Verdugo as part of Corey Kluber trade talks. Cleveland is looking for outfield bats, and Verdugo is the Dodgers' top prospect, according to @MLBPipeline. @MLB @MLBNetwork
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) December 10, 2018
Yes, yes, yes. This is a prime Kobe rumor, fed beer and massaged to encourage marbling. You have a pair of perennial contenders discussing wild permutations and possibilities, with names you’ve heard of.
I still don’t have any idea why the Indians are interested in trading Kluber, but I guess they’re looking to sustain this run of three straight World Series titles. The rumor is a banger, though.
Grade: A+
Miami Marlins
Yankees do like Gary Sanchez very much, as they’ve said, so not sure how Realmuto deal would work for them. It’s been suggested Yankees involvement could be 3-way situation with them being the conduit.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 11, 2018
I don’t enjoy giving the Marlins a hard time, but it’s hard not to, considering they ditched an all-time outfield without having a top-100 prospect to show for it. This, though, is a rumor I can get behind. The Yankees get a sure thing, a two-way catcher who just might be the best in baseball. The Marlins get a buy-low potential superstar with some scrapes but nothing that the body shop can’t buff out?
It’s a great balance of present and future, with risks and rewards for both. Great rumor.
Grade: A
Milwaukee Brewers
From Robert Murray of the Athletic:
Sources tell The Athletic that the Brewers have expressed interest in free-agent second baseman Daniel Murphy, as well as retaining free-agent third baseman Mike Moustakas.
Still think they could use a starting pitcher or two, and this is a market that features several of them, but a solid second baseman is a pretty good start, especially one on a shorter-term deal who wouldn’t block Keston Hiura.
It’s boring, but pragmatic. This is a rumor with fiber.
Grade: B
Minnesota Twins
When in Vegas... #MNTwins seem to be kicking the tires on a few more FAs. Have inquired on Soria, Cahill, + Ramos. Ramos is said to be in Vegas. The Twins have NOT requested a face-to-face to this point. We'll see if interest turns serious on any of those guys.
— Darren Wolfson (@DWolfsonKSTP) December 10, 2018
The Twins are the hardest team to peg in baseball, two years removed from a postseason berth and just a couple months removed from a dull, pointless season. So this rumor makes sense. Reliever! Back-end starter! Win-now catcher! It’s all over the place.
At least it looks like they’re trying, though. At least it looks like they’re trying. That means something in 2018.
Grade: C
New York Mets
Their best rumor was this at one point ...
The Mets had a meeting with Wilson Ramos today.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) December 11, 2018
... and that’s a B-rumor, at best. Ramos fits the Mets, for sure, but that’s just not a sexy rumor. Even the tweet is just a single sentence, completely self-aware about its general okayness.
IT’S CERTAINLY NOT A RUMOR LIKE THIS:
#Mets have discussed trade in which they would land J.T. Realmuto in three-team deal with #Yankees and #Marlins, sources tell The Athletic. Not known if Syndergaard involved. NYM would not part with Syndergaard (three years control) if getting only Realmuto (two years) in return.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) December 11, 2018
PRrrrrroowwwwwww goes the power chord as you windmill the guitar until the E string breaks and sparks shoot out behind you.
The best part about a rumor like this is that you can’t hate it! I have no idea what permutation gets Realmuto on the Mets with Syndergaard going the other way. Maybe Gleyber Torres comes to the Mets? Does that sound stupid? Too much? Too little?
Look, I have no idea how any of this works, and it’s beautiful. What a rumor.
Grade: A+++++
New York Yankees
Cashman pretty much ruled out Harper: “The Harper stuff, I’m surprised you are still asking.” #Yankees
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) December 10, 2018
They can claim some of the pluses from that previous grade, but this is still a rumor that says, “The Yankees aren’t looking to be the Yankees that you remember.” The 2003 Yankees would have signed Harper by now. The 2018 Yankees are cosplaying as the modest Cardinals, and it’s annoying.
Grade: D
Oakland A’s
From Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle:
According to an industry source, Oakland has expressed interest in free agent D.J. LeMahieu
Perhaps the best fit of any rumor here. LeMahieu plays defense, and while Coors Field overrated his offense, he can still hit a little bit. The glut of second basemen means that his market should be owner-friendly, which is great if you’re rooting for the owners.
This definitely has a chance.
Grade: A
Philadelphia Phillies
The #Phillies have had ongoing dialogue with LHP J.A. Happ over the last several days, according to sources. The Phillies have a long shopping list. But Happ appears to be their best fit, as a LH with experience in Philadelphia who won't require a long deal. Still seeking 3 years
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) December 10, 2018
“Ongoing dialogue” is an underrated Winter Meetings phrase. That dialogue could be about employment. It could also be about whether the SNES or Genesis was better. It’s wide open if you use your imagination.
But Mr. Stark’s overall point — that the Phillies are a great fit for Happ — is sound. Every win-now team should be giddy about someone like Happ, who gives them a strong chance next year without requiring a messy fourth or fifth year at the end of his contract.
Grade: A-
Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates GM Neal Huntington on listening to trade offers for players nearing free agency: "In Cervelli, Dickerson and Nova’s case, they fit really well for us. So it’s going to have to be something that makes sense for us in the big picture to have us entertain that."
— Adam Berry (@adamdberry) December 11, 2018
Didn’t the Pirates just give up a tremendous amount of talent for Chris Archer? Aren’t they all in? Or are they kinda sorta in but also listening to trade offers if it allows them to kick the can down the road a couple of years? And if that’s the case, why did they do that thing for Archer again?
If they’re going to trade that much for Archer, shouldn’t they surround him with free agents that break the Russell Martin threshold and become the highest paid Pirates mercenaries ever? Is it possible to talk about the Pirates without constantly reverting to upspeak?
Grade: ¨∑ œ ˆ ˆ∑ ´®? ! look i have no idea
San Diego Padres
Padres, the most rumored team for a Syndergaard trade, as of this moment “don’t look like a great fit.” Mets want 2019 impact so it’s no surprise they seek Fernando Tatis Jr.; SD has made him untouchable.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 9, 2018
I get it. It’s because Syndergaard is creating thunder and spraying the earth with lightning. That’s why he’s a part of all the best trade rumors of the last year.
The Mets would want Tatis because they’re looking to win in 2019 and also save various Wilpons money over the next few years. The Padres would want Syndergaard because they’re angling to be this year’s version of the Braves, where they arrive just a touch earlier than expected, and they want a unicorn of a starting pitcher in place if that happens.
Great rumor. A completely ludicrous paring of teams, but that’s why it’s so great.
Grade A
San Francisco Giants
Several teams have expressed interest in 1B Brandon Belt, who’s available, in talks with the #SFGiants
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) December 10, 2018
Brandon Belt would hit 30 homers with a .400 OBP in Yankee Stadium. I love watching him, and he’s clearly the Giants’ best hitter, but sometimes birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright.
The fact that several teams are interested gives you a hint that their computers are spitting out reams of paper that detail just how much AT&T Park screws him. It’s almost — almost — enough to make me want the Rockies to pursue him.
Seattle Mariners
Hrmm, my editors are telling me that’s not a real tweet and is something that I made up. One second.
...
You know, there really aren’t any good rumors here. Jerry Dipoto doesn’t need your stinking rumors. He prefers to hide in the bushes with a trade and spring out, “GRRRRAAHHHHHFRRRH” and scare the hell out of you. It’s his thing.
Grade: INC
St. Louis Cardinals
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch had, like, six dozen rumors packed into one post. As a rumor connoisseur, allow me to take a quick break and share my appreciation for a column like this.
I’ve been doing a lot of research with old issues of The Sporting News, and it’s made me appreciate the format of a pre-Twitter world. There aren’t single names or trade possibilities barfed out for retweets to improve brand awareness. There were densely packed articles that walked you through all of the scuttlebutt and tried to make sense of it. Nick Cafardo’s weekly column is another one that deserves praise in a Twitter world.
Anyway, just read the column if you have any interest in what the Cardinals are doing. It’s a lot better than 140 characters of “HEARD THIS.”
Grade: A
Tampa Bay Rays
From Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:
Among several options the Rays have explored to sign or trade for a starting pitcher, they’ve expressed interest and had initial conversations with free-agent RHP Charlie Morton.
Hell yes, this is a fine rumor. But I’m not sure if I should be this proud of the Rays spending just a little bit. They’re a solid collection of on-field and front-office talent that should absolutely believe in themselves. They can afford a free agent or two, right?
Right?
Grade: B+
Texas Rangers
From Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
They have already received calls from most MLB teams on right-hander Jose Leclerc, who finished 2018 as the closer and was one of the game’s top relievers. The Rangers have a glut of left-handed-hitting corner outfielders, and Daniels has indicated a willingness to move one of them.
Jose Leclerc didn’t allow a run after July 25th. He’s incredibly awesome.
youtube
Also, the Rangers should absolutely trade him for a billion prospects. This is a bird in the hand who is worth six birds in future bushes, but you can also trade him for nine birds in future bushes. In this metaphor, the birds are prospects, unless the bushes are. Either way, every bad team that stumbles upon a magic young relief ace should cash that chip in IMMEDIATELY.
Grade: B-
Toronto Blue Jays
#BlueJays met with five teams and five firms at winter meetings today. Doesn’t sound like anything is imminent. Ross Atkins described the interest in Stroman/Sanchez as “significant” but said they’re so talented it would “very difficult” to get equal return.
— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) December 11, 2018
This is rumor non-speak.
We have good players, but we’ll need to get even better players back if we trade them.
Though I do appreciate the in-or-out quandary the Blue Jays are in. It’s the same one they’ve been stuck in for about two decades, give or take a Bautista bat flip, but I wouldn’t know what to do with them either.
Grade: D
Washington Nationals
From Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post:
As Boras sees it, (Mark) Lerner violated that provision when he said in a radio interview on 106.7 the Fan that the Nationals did “the best we could do” by offering Harper $300 million over 10 years in September.
The Nationals are out? The Nationals are out! I dismissed the idea that they would pay so much for Patrick Corbin that they would give up on Bryce Harper, but I guess I shouldn’t have. There’s apparently a younger Lerner in charge, and we should never underestimate the ability of a next-generation rich dude to outthink himself.
They should probably re-sign Harper, y’all.

Dance to the Music of Time
There’s been a lot going on. Leaving the Bad Plus is the largest shift, but various other kind of career and conceptual themes also have been undergoing transformation. I also just turned 45, ” which could be believed midpoint of this journey.
It really all does seem curved. Themes re-occur. The last month nearly felt like a trip of yesteryear.
Sarah and I visited Daniel Pinkwater. There is a meme inquiring, “What four pictures are you?” I really don’t have four pictures, but I really do have the collected works of Daniel Pinkwater. Alan Mendelsohn, Boy From Mars; The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death; Lizard Music — these 3 novels “are me”
Sarah stated, let’s give Pinkwater a monster. That monster charge me a small fortune in Tokyo, but she had been right. It had been the great present, a perfect trade.
On the drive we listened to Pinkwater music books in the car. Amazing! I only learned that Mr. Pinkwater himself reads his own books and you can purchase them on iTunes. They are now an essential part of my travel catalog.
Rufus Reid turned in the Pat Zimmerli Clockworks concert at Merkin Hall. Rufus is a consecrated jazz bassist, but for me he had been also an important teacher. One afternoon at Banff in 1990, students and faculty were sitting around the coffee shop and Miles Davis’s “Bye Bye Blackbird” came on as background music. Rufus Reid staged together with Coltrane’s solo note for note. I had been impressed and impressed. To understand to perform, was I really going to have to sing Coltrane solos also? That seemed hard — too difficult! It took me decades and some further strict instruction from Lee Konitz, however, in the long run I decided that Reid was perfect. I can not sing any Coltrane yet, but I can sing a lot of Lester Young and Charlie Parker.
Seeing Reid brought back that memory and from this time next year I guarantee to have the ability to sing Coltrane’s “Bye Bye Blackbird” and “All of You” from ‘Round About Midnight.
I added ” You” to the heap because Billy Hart told me:
The first time I fell in love with John Coltrane was that his solo on ” You” from Miles’ ‘Round Midnight. I have talked to Gary Bartz about this, and he felt exactly the same way–which this solo made us Coltrane fans, forever.
Billy Hart is my most important teacher and we have worked together for over twenty decades. However, I hadn’t ever played with Buster Williams and Billy Hart collectively, despite Buster and Billy being universally considered one of the wonderful bass/drum mixes.
It finally occurred on Tuesday, quartet together with Billy Harper. Everybody agreed that it was incredible to listen to the beat played with that bassist with that drummer.
Billy Hart, Lenny White, Buster Williams
Lenny White was there. He plays with Buster all the time — they have become a traditional contemporary rhythm section — but I think he wished to find a flavor of that other thing Mchezaji has with Jabali. In the dressing room I had been as silent as possible while I listened to them tell stories.
Billy Hart talked about studying Afro Cuban songs from Lenny White! They were playing with Pharoah Sanders. Neither was playing with drum group, they were on cowbells and claves. Afterwards Billy whined to Lenny about how Lenny appeared so much better and Lenny said that he was actually checking out authentic Afro Cuban songs. This anecdote describes in a flash Lenny White was able to walk into and power a lot of the best fusion recordings: The deep background for its “new” method of dealing with the eighth circa 1970 was African American procedures from tens of thousands of years back. Of course.
Patrick Zimmerli’s Clockworks  together with Chris Tordini, John Hollenbeck, and me personally is out, and so is — finally — Shores Against Silence, the recording with Kevin Hays, Larry Grenadier, and Tom Rainey from 1991. I had been at that recording session, and discovered “The Paw” for the very first time in the studio. Pat provides me a particular mention in the liner notes to Shores Against Silence, which I think is only fair, as I’ve been telling people that this is an amazing album since…well I figure since 1991.
Vinnie Sperrazza is getting to be a major new collaborator. At the Clockworks position that he appeared in the score and stated, “I can hear Pat had been an effect on you” Without a doubt — Pat will always be a monument in my own entire life, which is elaborated further in our interview.
Vinnie took the photograph of me and Rufus Reid collectively afterwards telling me of a period he played with James Williams and Rufus Reid in Knickerbocker’s. Yeah, Vinnie’s my type of cat, with a swinging cymbal beat that undulates inside the music. We’re working collectively in Pepperland, the extravagant revue created by Mark Morris for the Mark Morris Dance Group.
It is just wonderful to be back together with Mark Morris back again. For five years that I had been his musical manager. I watched the dance shows every night, then following the series went to Mark’s hotel room and listened to Handel and Partch. Lorraine Hunt Lieberson would attend rehearsal; I played with Schumann with Yo-Yo Ma. It had been around me to attract conductors in line about tempi and singers around diction.
Pepperland is the Beatles as viewed though the prism of classical music and it really works. It’s been really amazing to expose Vinnie and other buddies Jacob Garchik, Sam Newsome, and Rob Schwimmer to the magic of Morris. In addition, it is just incredible to leave the Bad Plus and also be instantly involved in another hit project.
Concerto to Scale reflects Morris, Zimmerli, Jabali, and everything else that I love. It surely reflects Pinkwater. Program notes:
My very first piece for orchestra is blatantly modest in measurement, or “to scale” While composing, I re-read a number of my favourite books from when I was a young adult and tried to catch that kind of joyful emotion. The work is devoted to John Bloomfield.
Allegro. Sonata form in C major with tons of scales. My left hand and the bass drum soloist are the rhythm section offering syncopations in conversation with the orchestra’s standard chain material.
Andante. A 19th-centutry nocturne air meets modern polyrhythms. That is a stunning elaboration of a piece originally written for Mark Turner called “We Come In the Future.”
Rondo. The rate mark is, “Misfit Rag.” Ragtime is how American composers traditionally insert a touch of jazz on the concert stage, and who am I to disagree? The orchestra gets a chance to improvise along with the pianist and percussionist enjoy a double cadenza.
I didn’t really have to re-read Pinkwater for the Concerto — I have these publications memorized — but that I did examine The Toothpaste Millionaire from Jean Merrill (1972) and Alvin’s Secret Code by Clifford B. Hicks (1963). These two are undisputed classics and remain in print. Interestingly, both will also be on race relations, a simple fact I had completely forgotten. They are white writers referring to the midwest in the 1960s, therefore perhaps not every authorial decision will beyond muster now, but they had been in there, trying to swing. They had been about my two favourite novels when I was ten or eleven. I had good taste!
The review by Seth Colter Walls was satisfying (Amanda Ameer said I look just like  Schroeder in the picture, which is ideal) and I have been astonished just how much I enjoy listening to the cassette.
(if you would like to listen to the rough mix of this premiere or examine the score, sign up for Floyd Camembert Reports.)
Between Pepperland and the Concerto, it’s beginning to feel as though my future will involve extended composition.
Composition might be part of this future, but additionally, I will always be a jazz pianist who enjoys to play with clubs. Starting tomorrow I am on an extensive UK tour together with Martin Speake.

Martin and I go back to Banff in 1990. It was a hell of a lineup there: Faculty included Rufus Reid, Marvin Smitty Smith, Stanley Cowell, Kevin Eubanks, Kenny Wheeler. Abraham Adzenyah taught dance from Ghana — I suppose the very first time I danced with a woman was in that course. (Currently this post is becoming overly personal.) Steve Coleman was the artistic manager.
The students were also amazing. Tony Malaby, Seamus Blake, Ralph Alessi, George Colligan, John Stetch, Andy Milne — Jeez, I know I am forgetting some others that are now renowned…
Particularly important to my artistic growth were Benoît Delbecq and Steve Argüelles, that went on for a real force collectively and big influence. With Noël Akchoté they turned into The Recyclers and released Rhymes in 1994. You want to understand something that I checked out? Rhymes was some thing that I checked out, especially the monitor “Suguxhama” from  Argüelles and Django Bates.
(Later, motivated by David King and Craig Taborn, I’d listen to all the fantabulous Django Bates records together with Martin France on drums. It turns out that France is going to be on several gigs of this Martin Speake tour. Wow! I’m going to have to play with Martin France for the very first time.)
At Banff 2 duo connections had notable resonance. The fantastic Jill Seifers (a wonderful vocalist who ended up dying far too young) and that I did a set in the little Banff club which I listened to repeatedly. Along with Martin Speake and that I created a recording which was enormous fun, he is splendid lyrical participant that sees it from all the angles.
At the Vortex gig earlier this year, Martin told the audience that after we met with Banff, I delivered him (by post from Menomonie, Wisconsin to London, England) a tape of Ornette Coleman’s then-scarce Science Fiction accompanied by a note on Doctor Who stationery. Yes It really does all seem curved. Themes re-occur. I openly admit I can’t wait to get Jodie Whittaker.

Boring hot stove could’ve been stellar if these 18 players hadn’t signed extensions
The calendar will soon flip over to 2018, and so far only six of our top 20 free agents have signed. It has been a slow-moving offseason for sure. I blame it on a generally underwhelming free agent class and big market teams like the Yankees and Dodgers trimming payroll. It is what it is.
Why is this free agent class underwhelming? Because so many players sign long-term contract extensions early in their career, pushing back their free agency. They trade their maximum earning potential (through arbitration and free agency) for financial security earlier in their career. I don’t blame them one bit. I’d do the same thing.
It takes six full years of service time to quality for free agency, though given the way teams manipulate service time these days, it often takes closer to seven years. Kris Bryant, for example, will end up playing six full seasons and two weeks short of a seventh full season before becoming a free agent thanks to the way the Cubs kept him in the minors to start 2015.
There are 18 players around the league who reached six years of service time in 2017, but did not become a free agent this offseason because they signed early career extensions. Because we like ranking things, here is a wholly subjective ranking of those 18 players, who would have undoubtedly spiced up the offseason had they not signed extensions.
1. Mike Trout
CF / Angels
Contract: Six years, $144.5 million (Signed March 2014)
The best player in the world would have hit the open market this winter had the Angels not shoveled a record-breaking extension in front of him a few years ago. We haven’t seen a free agent like Mike Trout since Alex Rodriguez way back in the day. I’m talking about an MVP caliber producer — Trout hit .306/.442/.629 with 33 home runs around his thumb injury this past season — at an up-the-middle position in his mid-20s. Trout is still only 26. His free agent contract this winter would’ve crushed baseball current record contract, which is Giancarlo Stanton’s massive 13-year, $325 million deal.
Baseball’s best player could’ve become a free agent this offseason. USATSI
What would he have received this offseason? Even as quiet as this offseason has been, I think Trout would’ve landed a monster contract worth $40 million annually across 10 years, possibly even more years with opt-outs throw-in. This isn’t a situation where Trout would’ve beat Stanton’s contract by a few million. He would have shattered that record, like A-Rod did back in the day. Here’s a longer look at Trout’s would-be free agency.
2. Jose Altuve
2B / Astros
Contract: Four years, $12.5 million with two club options (Signed July 2013)
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is the reigning AL MVP and a World Series champion, as well as a three-time batting champion and the league leader in hits four years running. He hit .346/.410/.547 with 24 home runs and 32 stolen bases in 2017, then added seven more home runs in the postseason. Trout is still our topped ranking would-be free agent because he’s so good and so young, but Altuve is only 27 himself and it’s hard to have a better walk year than he just did.
What would he have received this offseason? Robinson Cano’s 10-year, $240 million deal with the Mariners seems like the benchmark here. However, Cano signed that contract at age 31. Altuve is only 27. And as good as Cano was in the years leading up to his free agency, he did not win an MVP or any batting titles. Teams would probably approach Altuve with a Cano offer hoping he’d accept. Elite players are getting $30 million per year nowadays, so I think Altuve’s 10-year contract would top $300 million. He is so underpaid right now it’s ridiculous.
3. Paul Goldschmidt
1B / Diamondbacks
Contract: Five years, $32 million with one club option (Signed March 2013)
Few players in baseball have been as consistently excellent as Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt the last few years. He hit .297/.404/.563 with 36 home runs in 2017, earning him his third top three finish in the NL MVP voting and his fifth consecutive +4 WAR season. Goldschmidt, Trout, Buster Posey, Josh Donaldson, Clayton Kershaw, and Max Scherzer are the only players with +4 WAR in each of the last five seasons.
What would he have received this offseason? What a player is worth and what a player signs for a free agent are not always the same thing. Free agency has not been kind to first basemen in recent years, though it’s been a very long time since an all-around first baseman as good as Goldschmidt hit the market. Not since Mark Teixeira following the 2008 season. Goldschmidt turned 30 in September while Teixeira signed his eight-year, $180 million contract at age 28, so maybe that’s not the best benchmark. Then again, we have nearly 10 years of inflation to account for. Goldschmidt is easily a $25 million a year player, probably closer to $30 million a year, and getting six guaranteed wouldn’t have been out of the question. He would have had Red Sox written all over him in free agency.
4. Carlos Carrasco
SP / Indians
Contract: Four years, $22 million with two club options (Signed April 2015)
Does everyone realize how good Carlos Carrasco is? I feel like not enough people realize how good Carlos Carrasco is. Perhaps that’s because he’s stuck playing second fiddle to Corey Kluber with the Indians. Check out Carrasco’s numbers the last two seasons compared to those of Jake Arrieta and Yu Darvish, the top two free agent starters on the market this winter:

Carrasco has been every bit as good as Arrieta and Darvish the last two seasons, if not better, and he’s a few months younger than them as well. All three pitchers have a history of arm problems, so that won’t serve as the great separator in free agency. Point is, Carrasco is excellent, and he would have been an extremely hot commodity as a free agent this winter.
What would he have received this offseason? Johnny Cueto’s six-year, $130 million contract immediately jumped to mind. Cueto was about the same age as Carrasco is right now when he hit free agency, and remember he had some elbow woes in his walk year that complicated his free agency. Carrasco wouldn’t get $30 million a year like recent elite free agent pitchers (David Price, Zack Greinke, etc.), though he’d do better than guys like Jeff Samardzija (five years, $90 million) and Ian Kennedy (five years, $70 million).
Salvador Perez was the one Royals core position player who did not become a free agent this offseason. That’s because he signed a super team friendly extension right after breaking into the big leagues, then signed a slightly less team friendly extension a few years after that. Perez is pretty divisive. His supporters see a true field general and team leader. His detractors see a .268/.297/.495 batting line and questionable defensive metrics. I feel Perez, maybe moreso than any other catcher in baseball, would benefit from a “works with pitchers” stat. Get on it, stat people.
What would he have received this offseason? Perez is only 27, he has a reputation for being a leader, and he’s swatted 20-plus homers for three years running now. Quality catching is very hard to find too. The five-year contracts signed by Brian McCann ($85 million) and Russell Martin ($82 million) feel like Perez’s floor to me. Because he is still so young, I don’t think a seven-year contract would have been out of the question had Perez become a free agent this winter.
6. Danny Duffy
SP / Royals
Contract: Five years, $65 million (Signed January 2017)
Had Danny Duffy and Perez become free agents this offseason as scheduled, the Royals would’ve been faced with losing all of their core players in one offseason. It would have been ugly. Fortunately, both signed long-term extensions. Duffy has had some problems staying healthy in his career — he threw a career high 179 2/3 innings in 2016, the only time he reached 150 innings in his career — but a 29-year-old southpaw with a bulldog mentality and a history of missing bats would’ve been in demand this offseason.
What would he have received this offseason? Jordan Zimmermann inked a five-year contract worth $110 million at Duffy’s age a few years ago, so I think that’s the benchmark. Both Zimmermann and Duffy had Tommy John surgery in their history. Then again, Zimmermann’s contract has been nothing short of a disaster, so perhaps he’s a cautionary tale and would have had teams bidding more carefully for Duffy.
Free agency would have been poorly timed for Brandon Crawford, who hit .253/.305/.403 with 14 home runs in 2017, making it his worst offensive season in several years. I think Crawford’s track record, his Gold Glove caliber defense, the fact he was a key member of the Giants’ last two title teams, and a thin free agent shortstop class — Zack Cozart was the only free agent shortstop who could hold a candle to Crawford — would have netted him a nice contract anyway.
What would he have received this offseason? Gosh, it’s really hard to say. I think Crawford would have beat Cozart’s three-year, $38 million contract with the Angels because he has a longer track record and is 18 months younger. There are four years and $60 million remaining on Crawford’s extension. How about that for an expected free agent contract? Sounds good to me.
8. Kyle Seager
3B / Mariners
Contract: Seven years, $100 million with one club option (Signed December 2014)
The inferior Seager brother (sorry, Kyle) is coming off a .249/.323/.450 batting line with 27 home runs in 2017, making it his worst offensive season in several years. Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager is still a top notch defender though, and he’s made real progress handling southpaws in recent years, plus he just turned 30 in November. Down year or no down year, Seager would’ve been in good shape going into free agency, at least in theory.
What would he have received this offseason? This is where it gets interesting. What does Seager get when the free agent market offers other similar third base options like Mike Moustakas and Todd Frazier? Those two are having trouble generating interest, at least as far as we know, so add Seager to the mix and the outlook only gets worse. Seager is worth $20 million or so on a four or five-year contract, I believe. But again, what a player is worth and what he receives are not always the same thing.
9. Matt Carpenter
1B / Cardinals
Contract: Six years, $52 million with one club option (Signed March 2014)
Matt Carpenter’s free agency would have been very interesting. He’s been so obviously productive for the Cardinals — Carpenter hit .241/.384/.451 with 23 home runs in 2017, and has posted a 120 OPS+ or better each of the last three seasons — and versatile, but he also turned 32 last month and isn’t particularly good defensively. His best position is first base and it’s fair to wonder if he’d wind up a full-time DH before the end of a multi-year contract.
What would he have received this offseason? The three-year, $60 million contract Carlos Santana just signed with the Phillies seems just perfect for Carpenter.
10. Brandon Belt
1B / Giants
Contract: Five years, $72.8 million (Signed April 2016)
Thanks to a variety of injuries, Brandon Belt has played only 458 of 648 possible games for the Giants the last four years, which would have surely hurt his free agent stock. He’ll turn in 30 in April and, as always, the free agent market offers no shortage of left-handed hitting first basemen. Belt would have been competing for work with Logan Morrison, Lucas Duda, and the recently signed Yonder Alonso, not to mention Eric Hosmer. The injuries would have really sabotaged Belt’s free agency.
Brandon Belt would have made the free agent first base market even more crowded. USATSI
What would he have received this offseason? Because of the injuries — Belt hit .241/.355/.469 with 18 home runs in 104 games around wrist problems and a concussion this past season — I think Belt would have been a good candidate for a one-year pillow contract this winter. Sign with a team with a hitter friendly home ballpark (Rockies!), have a big year, and try again next offseason.
11. Jason Kipnis
2B / Indians
Contract: Six years, $52.5 million with one club option (Signed April 2014)
Nagging shoulder and hamstring injuries limited Jason Kipnis to 90 games with the Indians in 2017, during which he hit .232/.291/.414 with 12 home runs. Not great. That said, Kipnis showed he can play the outfield late in the season, and he is a year removed from hitting .275/.343/.469 with 23 homers and 15 steals. Had he become a free agent as scheduled this offseason, I suspect we’d be reading a lot of “Kipnis is a great buy-low value free agent” articles right about now.
What would he have received this offseason? Cozart’s three-year, $38 million sounds good to me with Kipnis set to turn 31 shortly after Opening Day. Maybe he could push it to three years and $45 million.
12. Pedro Strop
RP / Cubs
Contract: Two years, $11.85 million with one club option (Signed February 2017)
Arrieta was so great with the Cubs that it can be easy to forget the Chicago also received Pedro Strop in that ridiculously one-sided trade with the Orioles way back when.
The Orioles have acquired RHP Scott Feldman & CA Steve Clevenger from the Cubs in exchange for RHPs Jake Arrieta & Pedro Strop.
— Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) July 2, 2013
Oh Orioles. Strop has thrown 271 2/3 innings with a 2.72 ERA and 10.6 K/9 in parts of five seasons with the Cubbies. He’s been awesome. And they got him in addition to Arrieta.
What would he have received this offseason? This has been a slow-moving offseason for everyone except free agent relievers. Those dudes have been getting paid. The three-year contracts signed by Mike Minor ($28 million), Bryan Shaw ($27 million), and Jake McGee ($27 million) set the market for Strop, even at age 32.
13. Josh Harrison
2B / Pirates
Contract: Four years, $27.3 million with two club options (Signed April 2015)
After back-to-back subpar seasons in 2015 and 2016, Pirates infielder Josh Harrison rebounded to hit .272/.339/.432 with 16 home runs this summer while playing his typically strong defense all around the infield. The big question: How sustainable is that batting line when Harrison was hit by 23 pitches in 2017 after being hit by 26 pitches total from 2011-16?
What would he have received this offseason? The Cozart deal again. Three years and $38 million or so.
14. Logan Forsythe
2B / Dodgers
Contract: Two years, $10.25 million with one club option (Signed January 2016)
The soon-to-be 31-year-old Logan Forsythe is coming off a bit of a down year with the Dodgers. He hit .224/.351/.327 in 2017 after hitting .273/.347/.444 with the Rays from 2015-16, though, to be fair, Forsythe did annihilate left-handed pitchers. I’m talking about a .290/.418/.452 batting line against southpaws this past season. A right-handed platoon bat who can play the three non-shortstop infield positions and even some left field is a nifty little role player.
What would he have received this offseason? Two years ago the Dodgers gave Howie Kendrick a two-year contract worth $20 million, and that sounds about right for me. I suspect such a signing would be met with a lot of “wow that’s a great deal for [team]” based on Forsythe’s 2015-16 seasons.
15. Matt Moore
SP / Rangers
Contract: Five years, $14 million with three club options (Signed December 2011)
It wasn’t that long ago that Matt Moore looked like a potential $200 million pitcher. Then Moore needed Tommy John surgery early in 2014, and since returning, he has a 4.85 ERA in 435 2/3 innings. That includes 5.52 ERA and an NL leading 107 runs allowed in 174 1/3 innings in 2017. Ouch. Imagine if Moore hadn’t spent the season in pitcher friendly AT&T Park? The Giants traded him to the Rangers a few weeks ago.
What would he have received this offseason? A one-year pillow contract, no doubt. Moore is still only 28. A one-year deal with an eye on testing the market again next offseason seems like a smart move. Andrew Cashner’s one-year, $10 million contract with the Rangers this past season seems like the benchmark. (Cashner had a 5.25 ERA in 2016, remember.)
16. Adam Ottavino
RP / Rockies
Contract: Three years, $10.4 million (Signed December 2015)
The 2017 season was not kind to longtime Rockies relief ace Adam Ottavino, who threw 53 1/3 innings with a 5.06 ERA in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. This is a guy who had a 2.84 ERA with 186 strikeouts in 180 2/3 innings from 2013-16 though, and he did it with Coors Field as his home ballpark. Ottavino’s track record would have earned him a look somewhere, especially with so many teams hoarding bullpen help.
What would he have received this offseason? Even in this market, I think Ottavino would’ve had to settle for a one-year contract given the recent elbow reconstruction and his 2017 performance. One year and $5 million or so could have done it.
17. Nate Jones
RP / White Sox
Contract: Three years, $8 million with two club options (Signed December 2015)
When healthy, White Sox setup man Nate Jones has been very, very good. He just hasn’t been healthy all that often. Jones had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and his 2017 season ended in July thanks to nerve repositioning surgery on his elbow. Between surgeries, the soon-to-be 32-year-old right-hander threw 101 1/3 innings with a 2.49 ERA and 122 strikeouts. His average fastball velocity? 97.4 mph. That’ll play.
What would he have received this offseason? Jones is coming off elbow surgery — non-structural elbow surgery, but still elbow surgery — though I still think he’d get a guaranteed contract. I could see a team throwing him one year and $3 million or so, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle in a rather pricey relief market.
Injuries have completely derailed Devin Mesoraco’s career. Since hitting 25 home runs with a .273/.359/.534 batting line as a 26-year-old with the Reds in 2014, Mesoraco has played only 95 of 486 possible games and hit .191/.292/.314. His 2017 season ended in August when an errant pitch broke his foot. What a shame. Mesoraco was establishing himself as one of the game’s best backstops when the injuries struck.
What would he have received this offseason? I’m not sure Mesoraco would get a guaranteed contract even with catching always in demand. A minor league contract with a catcher needy team may have been his best option. The goal would be hooking on somewhere, proving he could stay healthy (even if he has to do it in Triple-A), then hope for a better contract next year.
