Theme Deck Review Compendium: Champions of Kamigawa “Way of the Warrior”
The fourth deck from Champions, and the third monocoloured one. This time white, and Samurai themed. Was it any good? Let's see what people have said.
Because I accidentally posted one of my Fifth Dawn posts rather than scheduling it everything is all out of wack. It’s probably only me who is actually concerned about this, but even so. Consequently I’m doing this today instead of the “deePRECONnaissance” post I would normally do on a friday. Way of the Warrior A monowhite deck with a Samurai theme Official product information webpage…

You're more amazing than P
Was thinking about collars so I killed my fursona again ELIAN LIVES FOREVER!! Also noticed a distinct lack of monoblue Elians
#asks#custom cards#after making Treasured Collar i had 10 monowhite elians and only 2 monoblue cards#and one of those monoblue cards was Calamity's Gift which is a sorcery so the only blue elian i had was Engineer of Iteration#also i have exactly 5 each of WU UR and RW so that's cool. perfectly balanced#and to finish off the numbers i have 8 monored elians and 9 URW cards (2 are noncreatures)#so in conclusion: monoblue has been totally left behind#which makes sense; white has a lot of my favorite mechanics and revolves around creatures which i like#while blue just kinda draws cards and stalls the game. it seems like the only proactive thing it has is flying/unblockable which is boring#speaking of colors there's no mechanical reason for Treasured Collar to be white#it's just that it doesn't make flavor sense for it to be blue. not really white-flavored either but pets are pretty white right?#flavor is also a reason i don't make many blue elians#i play around with elian for fun and fantasy and happy things not for analysis and optimization

Hi Maro, do you think we'd ever see a set focus on color-shifted characters? I know Time Spiral block had them, but I'm curious if we'd see a current interpretation of that. Like a monowhite Liliana for example
The idea of a "what if" set is a common request. We have talked about it.

Darn Good Duplicates: Modified Copies Runners Up!
~
Our runners up this week are @corporalotherbear, @hypexion, and @melancholia-ennui!
@corporalotherbear — Warped Reflection
Simple, but effective. Excellent use of kicker, too, because while a slightly more expensive Clone effect is perfectly serviceable, you're really after the effect of paying the full seven mana. Getting an improved copy that does away with the original is quite good, and I love it as a sort of callback to good old Evil Twin. Good catch putting "another" in the ability as well, to avoid weird corner cases where the target is removed some other way and the token is forced to kill itself. It's solid, it's strong, it's cool, I really like it.
@hypexion — Scream Tear
So, from what I've managed to glean, the name was intended to be a play on screen tearing, specifically because of Duskmorn's glitch ghosts and their association with television screens. I admit I didn't really get that on first viewing, but it still felt perfectly evocative even without that knowledge. A rift like a tear in the surface of reality that emits a noise comparable to screaming still makes perfect sense in my brain. This is a very neat twist on an Oblivion Ring, adding a really interesting dynamic. On the one hand, being able to leverage whatever creature you've imprisoned yourself is strong, but the fact that the enchantment itself transformed means that you have to put it at more of a risk of removal or death in combat to fully take of advantage of it, which threatens to release whatever's under it. There's a lot of nuance here for both players when it comes how to approach it, and that's my favorite kind of card.
@melancholia-ennui — The Notorious Snatcher
So, immediately, I'm a bit dubious about the use of "The" in the name here. It's not legendary, so how many The Notorious Snatchers could there possibly be? At any rate, funny how Afterglow keeps coming up, eh? Good to see you're still experimenting with it. This definitely feels like a design enabled by Afterglow rather than just showing it off, and it's also uniquely Afterglow. After all, getting a second copy of this effect is quite strong, but the interesting part is that it actually makes the creature more vulnerable to being removed, which therefore makes the effect less powerful. I'm a bit dubious of the Afterglow cost being white, however, just because I'm not entirely sure monowhite should have access to this kind of effect if they manage to dump this straight to the graveyard. I'd be interested to hear the logic behind it, certainly.
~
That's about it. As usual, I'll be taking requests for additional commentary in our Discord. See you there! —@spooky-bard

Just got matched up against one of those janky Laelia, the Blade Reforged combo decks on Arena where the entire deck list is Laelia as the commander, plus Daring Discovery, Etali's Favor, and Throes of Chaos, and the rest is Mountains. Because of how cascade/discover work with cards like Laelia, you can get a shit ton of counters on her easily, and the Etali's Favor gives her trample.
Unfortunately for them, I was playing monowhite (my Delney deck) and slapped a Petrify on them before they could go off, completely shutting down the deck. One of my most satisfying wins ever.

I would love it if anyone who knows both Magic the Gathering and I Was A Teenage Exocolonist wants to add their own takes, but here are my ideas for the main 10 IWaTEx characters’ color identities:
Tang: blue/black at first, monoblue later
Dys: green/red
Sym: green/blue, with maybe a splash of red
Cal: monogreen
Anemone: monored at first, red/white later
Marz: red/black/blue
Tammy: monowhite
Nomi: red/blue
Vace: black/red
Rex: white/red/green

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #894: Haazda Shield-Mate
Haazda Shield-Mate is a rare from Dissension.
They don't make em like THIS anymore! In fact, they didn't make many of em like this at the point in time this was made, either. This reads like a throwback to even older-school Magic than original Ravnica block(wow, it is weird for me, who joined the game only three years later, to write that): You got the tiny power/toughness for the cost, you got the upkeep cost(a cool mechanic on paper that everyone realised sucked within the first few years of Magic's history), and the activated ability to potentially completely ruin the game.
This guy wants you to pump a nearly infinite amount of white mana into him so that no damage ever happens to you or your creatures. It has the ability to completely change how the game is played for your opponent, and not in a way most colours can deal with. Weirdly, despite being in a two-colour set, this guy wants you to be MONOWHITE, so as to have as much {W} as you can muster at any one time, not just to pay his upkeep cost but to use his only ability. Yes, they don't make em like this no more, and I am glad.

Please tell us about your MTG decks
I also got an anon asking about Commander decks, soooo JASPER SIXTY CARD DECK SPEED ROUND! I play either Kitchen Table 60 card or Commander (these will be featured as a response to the anon instead of in this post). I usually play against only my mom, but we're slowly getting all of the youth of a small town into the game as well. Not entirely sure how that happened.
First up is the White Slice Tour, a monoWhite deck I made to see what the hell is the appeal of monoWhite. I haven't gotten to play it yet, but it's a fairly low-power deck.
Next we have Rats. That's it, monoBlack Rat Tribal. It is my baby and they are here to overthrow the gods. My mom hates the poor things.
The third one for this evening is my Flying Theme deck. This is White-Blue and exists solely to counter my mother's monoWhite Angel deck. Yes, Alrund's Epiphany is in here.
We have two Red-Green decks: my OG(-ish) Wolf/Werewolf Tribal deck and my Boar Tribal/Food Token deck. The Wolf/Werewolf deck was the first deck I ever built (and my second ever deck). The Boar deck just kind of popped out of nowhere because I wanted to make Food Tokens, I wanted to play a Domri Rade planeswalker that my mom got me, and I had an unhealthy number of powerful boars (Ilharg, the Raze-Boar and End-Raze Forerunners, my beloveds). The rest, as they say, is history.
Now, brace yourself for the next one. Are you braced? Are you sure? Alright, here goes: Green-White Squirrel Tribal featuring the Infinite Squirrel Loop (Scurry Oak + Ivy Lane Denizen). Yes, it's just as stupid as it sounds. No, there is no win condition in this deck. Yes, the look on people's faces when I drop 94-ish Squirrel Tokens in a stack on the battlefield and inform them that my Treefolk named Scurry Oak is now a 95/96-ish in power and toughness is beautiful.
I have two Blue-Red decks: Unblockable Otters and Instants And Sorceries Matter. The Otter deck is from a family joke about how I'm an otter instead of a son or daughter. Yes, there are two Lutri, the Spellchasers in it. The Instants and Sorceries deck is the spiritual successor to my first ever deck, the Dangerous Knowledge intro deck from the Eldritch Moon set. That said, I didn't really like how it played, so I took out about half of the cards and replaced them. I'm currently waiting to retry that one.
I have two three-color decks in my 60 card collection.
The first is Blue-Black-Red Pirate Tribal. Yes, I sing the Lazytown song every time I play a pirate in that deck. Yes, it gets annoying and I lose my voice. But the absolute beauty of being able to wipe out every non-Pirate creature more than makes up for it.
The second is a Black-Green-Blue Snow Theme deck, featuring the bane of my mother's existence: Spirit of the Aldergard. She hates this fucking bear so much. And it's easy to see why: Because of its ability that gives it more power for every Snow permanent, if you have a deck that's ONLY Snow permanents, well...
The bear's just gonna fuck up your life and eat all your Cheetos and piss on your couch before rolling out of the window, that's what's gonna happen.
It's even more fun when you consider that I have three Runes in this deck. One gives a creature trample, one gives a creature deathtouch, and one gives a creature flying. This bear is a fucking menace.
...Did I mention that I'm running a full playset (aka 4) of these bears?

Realms of the Plane
World Tree
The plane itself is a world tree, much like the plane of Kaldheim. Unlike Kaldheim however, the realms are rooted in place by the world tree. There are no Doomskars, they don't collide with one another momentarily, for the plane was designed to avoid that, to limit interaction between the planes as much as possible.
Excuse the bad art, it was made to illustrate the idea, in my head, the tree is far more like the world tree of Kaldheim, more a celestial force than a true tree.
Credit: Anastasia Ovchinnikova
The 'cosmos' of the plane is thin, fairly insubstantial, comprised solely of excess mana from the realms which becomes attracted to and accumulates in the core of the world tree. While within the cosmos of this world tree, you would appear to be within an iridescent outer space, the stars being the light of living planes, occasional shadows being planes devoid of life, or the forms of Eldrazi Titans as they move through the multiverse.
Isolation Barriers
Each realm is surrounded by a barrier, not designed to keep anything out, but to keep everything in. It interferes with how Eldrazi travels, proper planeswalking, and makes Omenpaths within the realms more ephemeral. The barrier for the vast majority of realms has not been changed or modified by the realm's mana, which would cause their guardians to be considered redundant, differentiate the barrier from the standard opaque grey wall, and grant the barrier generally unique capacities.
Within the world, the barriers specifically attempt to adapt to the Sliver Hive of the realm, they were designed to contain them specifically, but it just so happens that they end up containing everything else while pursuing that goal.
Not gonna lie on this one, I feel extremely proud that there were actual wall cards I found with the ability to do this, technically however though, MonoWhite does have an issue with 'Protection from White' granted by Ward Sliver.
In this part, I will also mention the day-night cycle. The cycle gives both exactly 12 hours each. the 'sun' of the realms is the core of the world tree. The night stars of the realms are the same as those seen in the cosmos of the world tree. Both of which are colored by the mana of the realm's barrier.
Evergrowing Fruits
Each realm grows in size over time, almost exclusively due to the guardians and the machines they maintain. However, the extreme realms, the all and none color identity realms, function differently for their expansions.
These 'fruits', the realms, leak vast quantities of mana, but this mana is almost entirely absorbed by the world tree, which keeps it alive and grows it in turn, expanding the plane, which gives the realms more space to grow in turn, magic allows for such impossible feedback loops. (Source: Flavor text for Empowered Autogenerator "Magic, unlike physics, has no unbreakable laws.")
This, the feedback loop, has also caused the plane to, despite the mana inefficiencies of the thirty-two realms within, avoid the gazes of Eldrazi Titans, since the mana leaks from the realms but not the plane itself.
Rings, Slices, and Layers
Pictured above is the general layout of the realms.
Rings (actual general layout top left, labeled layout top right); are general environments and terrain. Many realms follow that pattern as seen above. However, as realms become aligned to more colors of mana, rings can become smaller, more rings may appear, or rings may outright disappear.
Slices (pictured bottom left); Every realm is divided into slices of temperature, though, as realms become aligned to more colors of mana, this difference of temperature becomes less and less pronounced.
Layers (pictured bottom right); Many of the realms have enough of an underground environment for it to be mentionable. Every realm with a Sliver Hive (all of them) has at least a small portion of an underground layer, though because they are under the core of the hive, I don't feel they are generally worth mentioning specifically.
