wow matpat retiring. one unknown fact about me is that i’ve propably seen almost all game theory videos. for the past few years it’s mostly been bcs i fall asleep to them. but when younger they meant the world to a pseudo-intellectual kid like me who was experiencing bullying for the first time. he was extremely present in my life during my young teen years when he was himself only starting on yt, so i connect a lot of peace and joy to him and his videos. during bad times he was propably the most comforting and familiar voice for me and eased a plethora of mental health issues enough to lul me to sleep. it’s funny how as he announced this ive also been moving heavily away from my online addictions and parasocial relationships. i guess step by step it is time to grow up in a way, and most importantly move on. but despite my acceptance, i’m very fond of him as a presense in youtube and it hurts to see him go. and due to the youtube scene and me myself changing, its unlikely ill ever create a relationship like the one i had with him. this will all propably only truly hit me after like a year when he will for real be gone and the unpermanence of everything will get itself another layer. but for now, this is a tender moment of melancholy and memberance to me. been a weird one. love you.

its occuring to me recently how fucked it is that people generally understand the nuances of christianity- the existance of different denominations, the fact that homophobic, racist, extremist groups arent representitive of the whole, the fact that there are people on varying levels of practice and intepretations of the bibles text, etc. yet when it comes to any other religion (but especially islam) all that goes out the window and people think they're a mindless monoloth.

ABSOLUTELY. first of all u cant go wrong with witchcult today by electric wizard. dopethrone is kinda their most acclaimed album as well as the most popular post-sabbath doom album and the first two songs are definitely worth a listen at yhe very least but witchcult is definitely more approachable and catchy. lots of great rhythms and riffs

secondly i would be remiss to not mention @wyrmweed's album Book of Rituals under her band Saturniidae. really awesome doom that i legitimately love and listen to all the time even beyond the merit of just being my friend's album :) that is to say i dont just listen to it because i know the person who made it. but yeah please do check it out!!

also blood lust by uncle acid and the deadbeats!!!!! ill cut you down was my very first doom/stoner metal song :) its just such a killer album with so many great songs

master of brutality by church of misery is another great one! i love the guitar tone its very Juicy for lack of a word that makes any sense at all

also in the same guitar tone vein is belzebong! incredibly weedy band but the riffs are great and its a good time with any of their albums ^-^

i also need to recommend bongripper! if you like more droney stuff theyre great, and their album from this year is a fantastic doom monoloth imo.

also windhand!!!! please try out their debut or soma. two of my favorite doom albums of all time easily.

also for something a little sillier i want to recommend eight foot manchild :) theyre like jazzy funky doom its soooo cool youve gotta hear them at least once

also spider kitten!!!! i love their album Behold Mountain and i want to listen to more at some point. theyre so silly with it

HI! I also was subscribed to somerton for a while. I couldn't tell you exactly when and why I unsubscribed, it was maybe a year ago?? But it had more to do with how much I was struggling to pay attention to his videos, and they felt like he was being WAY more pretentious and dramatic for how unenthused and dry the content was. I still thought his content was generally good, just not for me and the information was fine despite being poorly scripted, and sometimes mean.

I can pinpoint one memory of my dissatisfaction being 5 minutes into a tangent he was on. It was about a completely unrelated piece of media and I couldn't remember how we got there, how it connected to the video's thesis, or even what specifically that thesis even was. But yeah I figured it was my shit attention span or shit writing on his part.

I didn't put much of any thought into it because like @two-headed-lamb, it's really easy to dismiss those small concerns and it didn't seem like anything serious was amiss. I disliked his style, and disagreed a bit. That's it. Forgot about it and moved on.

When Hbomb revealed that his primary target was somerton I was shocked. I was also still trying to recover from the internet historian thing and so I was properly losing my mind at that point.

...But that shock quickly morphed into oh wait that makes SO much sense. No WONDER his script writing was so bad. that moment where I felt so lost on that tangent, because topics kept changing with little to no cohesion?? Literally because each point was stolen from different authors and copy/pasted haphazardly together. No way. It all made sense. I was played so goddamn hard what the fuck man.

It felt pretty awful. I had felt vindicated for my decision to stop watching his stuff, but I had still believed pretty much everything he had said in his videos and probably even recommended them to people at some point, further spreading his lies.

I guess I had gone through this before since I was also a fan of iilluminaughtiis content, though this felt more personal due to somerton's image as THE gay youtuber who was a supposed bastion for gay history/culture/media. He erased and obscured and betrayed the community the claimed to fight so hard for. And here I nodded along, lazily entertained, believing all of it, for a long time.

So yeah it sucks, I was embarrassed but it feels good knowing that I have been corrected. It's a lot to process and yeah. Dunno what to do with that besides move on and use a little more scrutiny when learning things online.

i wish i was seeing more from the people who were Somerton Fans before all this cuz like, i feel like we're having an issue where people feel the need to have been less conned than everyone else. like wow look at me i only fell for the grift a little bit. okay congratulations i guess but theres nothing shameful about having been a fan... nobody spends that much effort interrogating the media they consume and if you think you do youre delusional. anyway having been aware of him but not an avid consumer i am so curious how people who were are taking this. is it a big fucking shock to their whole worldview? is it more of a live and learn moment? like its gotta be fucking hard right. idk if it turned out tomorrow that people i trust like abby philosophytube were the worst people ever itd be a weird ass moment u know

I’m considering taking a pre-made Franciscan “rule of life” to the local bishop to formalize my status as a solitary, the better eventually to bring my life into better inner-outer balance (via “confession” and habit). This battle ie over. There is no point in me continuing to make my whole identity “I’m doing Christian practice (but not like that!).”

It is no more effective for me to differentiate myself from my Christian cohort than it is to insist likewise that I’m not one of those kinds of queers, no matter how alternate my experience. The communities are *not* monolothic, and I’m apparently not that schizmatic. I do it the way I do it. If you don’t like it, no one is asking you to align. Kindly offer me the same courtesy.
