Work in Progress Wednesday
A snippet of something I'm slowly chipping away at, set in the Constance Morse Lives AU
Dorothea Louise Frazil died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Oxford on 12th September 1990 surrounded by close family and friends. Dorothea attended St Margaret Hall and began her journalistic career in the newsroom at the Oxford Mail before being deployed to the battlefields of Korea where she worked tirelessly to ensure that the common voice of Korean citizens was heard by the press and the wider world. She returned to the Oxford Mail and has been the newspaper’s longest running and first female editor in chief.
Dorothea was witty, charming, caring and a verbal sparring partner to anyone who found themselves having a conversation with her. An avid smoker in her youth, in her later years, she campaigned for more awareness in schools on the dangers of lung cancer whilst also starting ‘The Campaign Against Living Miserably’ to raise awareness about young men and mental health.
She was the youngest child of General Sir Robert Frazil and Rose, nee Lady Martindale, sister to Captain Peter George Frazil and Henry Louis Frazil. She is survived by her middle brother, sister-in-law Venetia Frazil, her nieces Alice and Tatiana, her nephew E. Morse and his wife Monica Morse, and her great nieces and nephews, Constance Lucy Morse, Joyce Dorothea Morse, Frederick Francis Morse, and Peter Robert Morse.
A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Bartholomew’s Chapel, Cowley Road, Oxford- OX4 2AJ on 30th September 1990.
For any further information, please contact Henry Frazil or E. Morse.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Alley Cats on a Rusted Roof (Rhett Abbott x Reader)
Summary: Rhett’s hiding from his mother and (y/n) and it’s not long before the other men in the extended family come to join
Notes: Based off of the “Mike and Molly” episode where Joyce goes crazy with the spring cleaning and the guys are all roosted up on the roof and singing John Denver
Granite Trail Reservation
Wabang, WY
Rhett couldn’t get to the Redwood’s fast enough. Cece had already gone nuts with the spring cleaning, making him, Perry and Royal clean out the attic, rake the yard and the rest of the ranch work on top of that. He needed a day, but knew he wasn’t going to get anywhere else......plus it didn’t really help that the Duttons had come down from Montana to visit and that the kids were all running amuck.
He pulled up to the smaller ranch he had known so well and the house that once had been a good sized mobile home with other pieces and extensions built off of it. In the yard roamed a few horses while the barn out back housed the other animals and critters that called this place home. As soon as Rhett pulled to a stop, he went up and knocked at the screen door.
“The hell are you doing here?” Wes chuckled when he answered the door.
“You gotta hide me dude,” Rhett told him. “Ma’s going crazy with the spring cleaning and I can’t take it anymore.”
“Youre in luck,” Wes told him. “Gutters need cleaning and the roof needs re-shingling.”
Rhett groaned and ran his hand over his face.
“C’mon, what can it hurt?” Wes asked him. “I go up to the roof when I hide from Nora.”
Rhett rolled his eyes and followed Wes as they grabbed a ladder and headed up to the roof. “You gonna want lunch?” Wes asked him.
“What do you have?”
“Might go down to the corner and grab a sandwich later,” Wes answered. “Uncle said he’s gonna come by and see if he can help get one of the fences repaired.”
Rhett and Wes set to work cleaning out the gutters, a job that was less then pleasant and not one they necessarily looked forward to. Rhett gagged when he hauled out a dead rat that had probably been there since the beginning of winter, cringing as he thought of Bartholomew, the cream colored little rat Hannah had kept as a pet.
“Oh God, it’s nasty,” Rhett gagged. ‘So nasty!”
“Chuck it across the yard,” Wes told him. “Buzzards will probably get at it.”
Rhett and Wes continued to scoop out the nasty muck from the gutters when they heard someone climbing up the ladder to the roof. “Ta 'c meeywi, knuckleheads,” Wes’s father greeted.
“Mornin Russ,” Rhett replied.
“Dad, what the hell are you doing?” Wes asked him.
“I’m hiding from your mother,” Russ chuckled.
“You’ve got knee surgery in three days,” Wes reminded him. “You shouldn’t even be up here.”
“If I’m gonna go, it’s gonna be after at least three beers and in peace and quiet,” Russell told him. “And not with your mother nagging my ear off at every hour of every day.”
Russ hauled up a small red beer cooler with him, his knee creaking and popping as Rhett and Wes both helped him up. “You hiding too Rhett?” Russ asked him.
“Yeah, Ma’s goin crazy with the spring cleaning,” Rhett answered. “Last I heard, (y/n), Monica and Beth were all cleaning the silver.”
Russell made a face. “And I thought our end was bad,” he laughed.
The three of them scraped the last of the gunk from the gutters, hosing it out as best they could until the water ran clear. The sun was shining high in the sky and not a cloud to be seen. The grass rippled in the warm breeze as it blew across the hills and through the pines while somewhere high in the sky, a flock of birds took off from the treetops.
Another truck pulled up barely a half hour later and out jumped Royal, John, Thomas and Mo, each one of them hoping to find a spot up on the roof to hide from the women of the house. Kayce and Rip weren’t too far behind them, both of them exasperated and ready to relax.
“Ya’ll got any spots up there?!” Royal called to Russ.
“C’mon up!” Russell answered.
The men climbed up the ladder, perching themselves up on the roof before digging into the cooler and settling in like roosters perched on the roof of a coop.
************************
Cecelia Abbott pulled up to the house, noticing the three trucks parked in the dirt driveway. She smiled and shook her head as she got out and made her way to the front door.
“Cece!” Winona Redwood said happily. “Whatcha looking for?”
“My clueless knucklehead of a son and his equally clueless knucklehead of a father,” Cece answered.
“Check the roof, I think we have a nice assortment up there,” Winona told her. “You gonna want anything before you go? I need to run down to the corner and get a box of salt.”
“I’ll help make lunch as soon as I find’em,” Cece half laughed.
Cece rounded the corner to find the ladder, lured by the off kilter singing of a group of men who sounded more like screechy alley cats than actual singers. Sure enough, she climbed up and there they all were.
“Aye, Calypso, the places you've been to The things that you've shown us, the stories you tell Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit The men who have served you so long and so well”
Cece suddenly chimed in, the men turning their heads and each one with an “oh shit” look on their faces before they too joined her and finished off the song.
“Oh hey, darlin,” Royal greeted. “I didn’t know you were here.”
Cece gave him “the look”, one hand on her hip and the other still gripping the ladder. “Neither did I,” she said sternly.
Each of the men meekly hid their beers, knowing what was bound to come next.
“Now pray tell, why did ya’ll sneak away from your chores?”
None of them really wanted to answer but Cece could tell what all of them were thinking.
“Well,” she said. “I’m gonna go into town with Nona for a bit. Chores can wait till tomorrow.”
As soon as she was gone, the men thanked God above that they had gotten out of their spring chores. Yet one thing still stuck with them even as they started singing the song once more.
Cece always did....and always would, scare the ever living crap out of them.

people like to bring up how “mean” mickey was to Ian when he was a closeted abused teenager because they feel like then it gives Ian a pass for the times he hurt Mickey after. Not that I think that Ian should be burned at the stake for his actions either, I think people are too hard on both of them honestly, but that’s where I think the need to bring up all the things Mickey’s done wrong comes from. Among other things.
oh some of the time for sure. (1) and sometimes it's just someone like "btw don't forget your fave is NOT PERFECT" (2) & some people just feel the need to justify not.. liking him? which i mean. you can just not like someone. but what i saw that made me type that was straight up "fuck mickey for getting married that was so mean" which. Jesus
1 - this is like. a very flawed approach i think. because "it's ok that so and so bad thing was done because the other person also was hurtful" doesn't really negate either thing being painful.
neither thing was actually that bad a thing to do anyway, given that we're talking about people who are Actively having a breakdown. people under extreme pressure will act in ways they don't like it's just kind of what happens. mickey and ian both refused to hold these things against one another not because it was tit for tat but because they like.. loved each other and were willing to see each others perspective
2 - this one's just very silly i think. i've seen a lot of posts that are essentially callout posts for shameless characters & just list like all the bad things they've done in a very "remember not to idolize Bartholomew from episode 5 he's a BAD PERSON" type of way. the only things we should be holding shameless characters accountable for are CALLING THE COPS, being a LANDLORD, and WHATEVER FRANK, TERRY, and MONICA had going on. saying it like that sounds like the new world's worst polycule just dropped actually. i don't want to live in that world

After their visit to the cemetery, Matthew and Terra insisted on Monica coming home with them. Matthew, because he believed he and his mother had quite a bit to discuss right now and Terra, because she wasn’t sure she wanted Monica to stay by herself after an emotional moment like the one she had just gone through.
On the one hand, she thought the mother and son had a right to know the full story of what happened to Mitchell. But on the other hand, Terra couldn’t shake off the opinion that hashing it all out this many years later was kind of selfish on Mitchell’s part. Monica had over 20 years to deal with whatever feelings she had for him and Terra was afraid that this meeting might’ve reopened old wounds or even made new ones.
Of course, if that was the case, the woman wasn’t showing it. If anything, she seemed cheerful.
“What is the deal with all these Bigfoot hunters looking and behaving like they’ve been destroying their brain with a fancy mix of drugs for the entirety of their life? I’m just saying, maybe if they had gone looking for him sober, they’d actually find him,” she commented on the show that Terra put on for some background noise.
“If they were sober, would they really be looking for Bigfoot?” Terra joked.
“Nope,” Matthew decided. “But then, we wouldn’t have shows like these.”
“Bold of you all to assume there is no Bigfoot equivalent of potheads,” Bartholomew snickered. “Who do you think gets spotted by these types?”

Tagged by @elphabaoftheopera! I liked this one, thanks for tagging me. I have ten shelves so choosing one from each. Ranking for lowest to highest:
10: The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare: “Between the record of his baptism in Stratford on 26 April 1564 and the record of his burial in Stratford on 25 April 1616, some forty documents name Shakespeare, and many others name his parents, his children, and his grandchildren.”
I’m not a big Shakespeare fan and this doesn’t really pull me into to read this play.
9: Salomé by Oscar Wilde: “‘Salomé’ has made the author’s name a household word wherever the English language is not spoken.”
Similar to Shakespeare, this doesn’t pull me in; such is the danger of a foreword.
8: Inkspell by Cornelia Funke: “Twilight was gathering.”
Appreciate a setting but comes across a little cliche as the only sentence to judge by.
7: Marginal Lyrics of Love and Praise by Sister Monica Lammers: “I am not a poet— / Don’t think I don’t know it!”
This one is by my great great aunt. Kind of made me laugh (affectionately) to open on this note
6: The History of Ornithology by Valérie Chansigaud: “In the animal world, birds are among the easiest organisms to observe: their size, colour and song all conspire to attract our attention.”
While still in foreword territory, this one is more effective to me. Birds absolutely do garner my attention, that’s why I got this book!
5: The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling: “When we journey deep ‘into the woods’ in myths, fairy tales, or modern fantasy fiction, we travel to a place of magic, danger, and personal transformation.”
Another foreword, but a stronger one again, because I want to hear more about this transformation theory the editor is presenting.
4: Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan: “Fifty years before the war to end all wars, a boy played hide-and-seek with his friends in a pear orchard bordered by a dark forest.”
This book had no Library of Congress page or foreword/acknowledgments at the front; immediately jumped into the story with a strong setting, and I appreciate that.
3: Heartstopper: Volume 3 by Alice Oseman: “Sunday May 23rd: So… I came out as bisexual to my mum.”
This line makes me want to keep reading; how did coming out go?? (Already read this one so I know how it went but still a good hook!)
2: From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz: “Bartholomew Lampion was blinded at the age of three, when surgeons reluctantly removed his eyes to save him from fast-spreading cancer, but although eyeless, Barty regained his sight when he was thirteen.”
Hooks me in - how does an eyeless blind boy regain his sight? Science? Magic? Tell me, Koontz!
1: The AIDS Quilt: Stories from the NAMES Project by Cindy Ruskin: “My grandparents, well into their eighties, grow melancholy remembering lifelong friends who have died.”
This one hooks me in a lot, which the title alone already did. Definitely have had those heavy convos with my elders about the loss of friends and family, and I want to see where the author will take this.
I tag @gaysolavellan @ashestoashesjc @h0ckeyslut @notyourhousewife (if you want to - other mutuals please participate you want!)

Boston Tea Party - Part 3 (Matt Connerly: Chapter 1)
Matt Connery - Chapter 1
Matt aggressively threw himself into a chair, scattering multiple bags on M&Ms, nails, and old Pokemon cards. "I'm gonna need chicken blood, salt, five candles, and a bottle of vodka," he said.
Johanna peered over his shoulder, bottles of soda in one hand while she settled her sunglasses on her head with the other. "Vodka? For the ritual?"
Matt sighed dramatically. "No, that's just to make me feel better about ripping a hole in the universe."
"We're just setting up for a party," Sebastian reminded, rolling his eyes. He grabbed the M&Ms from Matt and poured them into a bowl on the nearby snack table.
"Dude, what the fawk," Johanna scoffs with a sort of frat boy-valley accent, lightly punching Sebastian a couple of times in the back.
"We have to get ready, don't we? The party starts at two and it’s already--" Sebastian pulled out his phone and checked the time-- "1:48."
"Shit, he's right. What's all that stuff for anyway?"
"Well," Matt started, "before your boyfriend so RUDELY took my things without ASKING, the M&Ms were for shooting up our noses, the Pokemon cards were for Kiss and Blow, and the nails were just for cinematic effect."
"First of all, I'm pretty sure someone will snort something regardless," Johanna started. "Second of all, those are my Pokemon cards. Gimme back my fucking Flareon. We'll use something else for Kiss and Blow. Third of all, nails are a delicacy that shouldn't be wasted for trivial recreational purposes. Fourth of all, we're not dating."
Yeah, fucking right, Matt thought to himself. It was totally obvious they had a thing for each other. Johanna called it "brotherly love", Matt called it "sexual tension". "Okay, maybe not yet, but eventually."
"Nah, she's engaged to Bartholomew," Sebastian teased. Johanna punched him in the arm, more harshly this time. Laughing obnoxiously, Sebastian ran around the house while Johanna chased him close behind, pillow in hand, smacking him when she was close enough.
Matt rolled his eyes just as Bart, Ciel, and Lizzie walked through the door, all with different snacks in hand. Lizzie's wearing her usual pigtails down, a much more mature look from what everyone is used to.
"Hey, guys," Matt greeted. "We're still setting up snacks and stuff, but feel free to get comfortable."
"Awesome," Bart replied, setting his Mountain Dew: Code Red down on the table. "Where's Johanna?"
Matt shrugged. "I don't know. Currently somewhere with Sebastian and a pillow." Right after that sentence dropped from his mouth, Bart power-walked through the house in search of the girl. "I probably could've worded that better."
"I'm not even going to ask," Ciel sighs.
Elizabeth went up to Matt and enveloped him in a hug. "You look so cute today! Normally dark colors aren't my thing, but they suit you perfectly! Although might I suggest..." The blonde reached into a pocket on her overalls and pulled out a cat ring, placing it in Matt's hand. Matt observed its white body as he pushed it down on his left middle finger, its rainbow eyes reflecting the light.
"I bought one for Johanna, too," Lizzie continued, hardly able to keep her excitement. "I know how you two always go to pride every year together and once I saw how cute it was, I couldn't resist."
"Believe me, she couldn't," Ciel huffed, dropping down on the couch.
Normally, Matt cringes at how enthusiastic and cute Lizzie is all the time. However, this time was an exception. "Thanks, Lizzie." Reluctantly, he returned the hug. It's only a few seconds before Ciel mumbled a "too long" under his breath, the three of them laughing as Grell, William, Ronald, and the others walk in.
Within minutes, everyone had a drink in hand and is settling into the party. Matt felt a tap on his shoulder and turned around to see Sebastian. "Oh, hey, man. What's Joey doing?"
Sebastian rubbed the back of his neck. "She and Bart are arguing over something. Nothing serious, I don't think."
"Oh." That's weird. Those two hardly ever fight, Matt thought.
"Yeah..." Sebastian trailed off. "Anyways, you said your dad was supposed to be performing? That would certainly kick the party off to a good start."
"Oh, shit, yeah, you're right." Matt handed his solo cup of blue Mountain Dew to Sebastian. "Hold this for me."
Hearing Sebastian mutter a "what the fuck", Matt made his way outside to the garage his father had converted into a studio. He named it Santa Monica Discharge, whatever the fuck that means. He still has no idea where the fuck that idea came from but his dad practically took LSD every day of his 20s.
Without knocking, Matt quietly opened the door to the studio to see his father listen intently as another masculine figure, probably a couple of years older than him, played a few notes from an Elvis Presley song on a keyboard.
"Oh, hey, bud," August greeted with a smile as he stood up. The other figure turned around as well, still holding the last note he left on.
So, he's got brown eyes, floofy hair, pretty fucking sick tattoos, he's actually pretty skinny but has buffed out arms, and is an overall bean, Matt thought to himself. It wasn't that bad of a description. The brunet was about as tall as August, his hair falling ever so slightly in front of his warm ivory face. His brown eyes met Matt's gunmetal blue before he had to break from whatever trance this stranger has put on him.
Matt shook his head, returning his attention to August. "We were, uh, getting ready for you to perform, whenever you ready." He nodded towards the other male in the room. "Who's this?"
August patted the stranger's back. "This is Christian. I'm pretty sure he goes to your school."
"I'm a senior," Christian chimed in.
"Yep. He came to me seeking musical guidance so I decided to help him out a bit," August explained. "I didn't mean for it to cut into your party, though. I didn't forget or anything."
"Yeah, I should probably get going," Christian agreed, grabbing his bag resting on the floor. "I've got a little project I'm working on anyways."
"H E Y, why not come veg with us cool kids for a bit," Matt offered shakily, immediately mentally kicking himself for acting so stupid.
"Aren't you guys just a bunch of freshmen?"
Matt felt a pit fall into his stomach. "Well, I mean--"
"Nah, I'm kidding. I'm playing with August today, actually."
"Oh, cool," Matt chuckled to himself. Wait, weren't you just about to leave? That don't make no sense. "See you in a couple of minutes then. With that, he turned and left the studio.
The entire way back to the house (a quick 35-second trip, at most), Matt couldn't help but yell at himself for acting like such an anxiety-ridden freak. A gorgeous man WHO GOES TO YOUR SCHOOL walks into your house and what do you do? You go 'oH, hEy, SoRrY, dO yOu CoMe HeRE oFtEn? Really? CUZ I LIVE HERE AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH--
Bart came storming out of the front door, holding his nose, wincing quietly.
Matt began to ask, "Dude--"
"Don't fucking talk to me," Bart yelled, making his way towards the sidewalk, pulling out his phone a tapping a bit.
Slowly, Matt walked inside, hoping someone would have an explanation for what just happened. Alas, everyone was just as stunned as he was.
Someone get a moving van because these last 5 minutes have been a lot to unpack.

Til’ Death Do Us Part; A Barry Allen Fan Fiction
Chapter 1: Pinch Me
Summary: In the first chapter Monica Bell moves to Central City and (despite being the new girl) quickly becomes friends with Barry Allen.
Word Count: 2097
Warnings: None
(A/N): Yay! It’s finally here the first chapter of my series. Thank you to darlingpetao3 for editing my story. Just as an FYI I’m new to this so if you have any advice please let me know. Also, I’d really appreciate it if you shared this with your friends. Also for anyone new to fanfiction (trust me we’ve all been there) here’s a little key for you: y/n is your name, y/f/n is your full name, y/e/c is your eye color, and y/h/c is your hair color. Ok, I think I’m done rambling. Enjoy!
Love has always been one of those things that has consumed all of my attention and energy. For as long as I can remember I’ve always ‘liked’ someone. Ranging from that stupid crush I had in the third grade to the boy I’ve liked for so long now. I’m pretty sure I’m in love with him. I mean how could you not love him? He is adorable, hilarious, super smart, and not to mention 6’1, with hypnotizing green orbs for eyes.
Barry Allen.
The name that has made my heart either flutter or skip a beat every time I hear it, since the tenth grade. You see, my life was very different before I met Barry. For the first eleven years of my life, my mother and I lived in National City. My mom worked as a journalist for Cat-Co while somehow still managing to raise me as a single parent. My life was great in National City; my classmates loved me, my teachers loved me, and during summer, I spent my days on the pier and my nights sitting by a bonfire making s’mores and staying up past midnight with my good friends; nothing was stopping me from living a perfect life. That was until, as my mom puts it, “Duty Called,” and she just had to follow.
So that June, us two packed all of our stuff up and moved to Central City so that my mom could start her job at CCPN. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was on the brink of tears the whole trip there. Although I had the whole summer to settle into my new city and meet new friends, most of my first summer there was spent reading biology books I had checked out from the library.
The first day of school came sooner than I had expected, which caused me to only get about three hours of sleep the night before. Earlier that night, I had settled on wearing a plain blue top and jeans. I didn’t feel like drawing too much attention to myself. Meeting new people has never been my thing.
Central City Junior High was only a ten-minute walk from my new house, but my mom, being the person that she is, insisted on driving me there on my first day. I don’t really remember the five-minute car ride there, mainly because I was lost in my own thoughts 99% of the time. The other 1% was spent twiddling my fingers or bobbing my knee up and down at lightning speed.
Once my mom finally pulled up to my new school, I quickly pecked her cheek goodbye and started my long journey to first period. It was weird being an “Outsider.” I finally experienced what it was like to be ignored, or bumped int-
“Shit,” I mumbled under my breath as all of my new journals fell to the floor (along with an unhealthy amount of colorful gel pens). All I could hear was the evil snickering of a few students behind me as I dropped to the floor with teary eyes to pick up the mess that was just made. I swiftly grabbed a handful of pens before a set of hands appeared on one of the journals. I followed the new set of hands with my blue eyes, up their arms to the face that owned them. Suddenly they were met with two green eyes staring right back into mine.
“Don’t worry about them, they always pick on their prey. I mean not that you’re at a lower rank than them, but you were alone and-” His rambling was instantly cut off by a voice above the two of you.
“Come on Barry, if I’m late to first period Dad’s gonna kill me.”
As soon as all of my things were back in a neat pile the stranger in front of me stood up and apologized to the voice that just spoke. I slowly began to stand back upright when the two of them started strolling down the halls.
“I-I’m sorry for what happened to you... whatever your name is. Wait, I don’t know your name. What’s your-” I couldn’t help but smile at his rambling.
“Barry Allen, I swear, if you don’t start picking up your feet I will drag you through these hallways for the rest of your life if I have to.” And with that, the two strangers, the green-eyed boy, and dark-skinned girl were out of sight.
As I walked into my first-period class you kept I head down low, avoiding any attention. I hastily took the last seat available (a seat in the dreaded front row) and gently placed my backpack on the back of my chair. Chatter could be heard throughout the classroom until- BIIIING- the bell went off and everyone suddenly fell silent.
“Hello class, I’m Ms. Martin and I will be your science teacher this year. Now before I start my class, I’ll be taking attendance, so please just say ‘HERE’ loud and clear when I call your name.” Ms. Martin went through about eight names, and I zoned out until a name caught my attention.
“Bartholomew Allen.” A hand shot up at the desk to my right.
“Here ma’am, and I go by Barry- Barry Allen.” I heard a few giggles in the back of the classroom as Barry slowly put his hand down.
“Well, okay then, Mr. Barry Allen.” The teacher checked off yet another name on her list. “Next would be, Monica Lucille Bell.”
It felt like all of the air had been sucked out of the room. My lungs began to burn and my heart was running 100 miles a minute. Slowly, I raised my hand only reaching the point where the tip of my middle finger reached the top of my blonde dressed head. Unfortunately, even though I was in the front row where the teacher could easily see me, she still stared me down until I meekly uddered out a ‘Here’. Suddenly all of the tension in my body was released and I was finally able to breathe again.
That was until I felt a finger gently poke my shoulder.
I turned my head towards the source of the finger. The stranger held out his hand until I nervously took his hand into mine and shook it, looking into his face.
“H-hi I’m Barry-” he whispered.
“You do know she just said your name like fifteen seconds ago, right Barry?” I questioned, rolling my blue eyes.
“Well, I just wanted to ‘formally’ introduce myself, Monica.”
And that’s how it all began. Little did I know that day was the start of my long adventure with Barry Allen.
After that day, Barry and I slowly grew closer and closer together. About a month into the school year the two of us were inseparable. Barry and I would spend as much time as possible together. Whenever the two of us were around it was impossible not to hear laughter.
Of course, Iris and I were also good friends. After awhile Barry had told me about his mother’s death and how after his dad went to prison he had to move in with Iris and her dad, Detective Joe West. The Wests always welcomed me with open arms, and soon my mom and I began celebrating birthdays, Christmas, and Thanksgiving with them. One of my favorite memories with Barry is actually the first Christmas the two of us spent together...
Central City was colder than usual that year, and the weather forecasters were predicting a 75% chance of snow on Christmas Day. My mom and I decided to stay the night at the West's’ house, seeing that it would be too cold to walk home and there was bound to be a dangerous amount of ice on the roads that night. All five of us had decided to spend our night by watching a few Christmas movies while drinking hot chocolate and eating cookies. I’ve never been too keen on nostalgic or cliche traditions, except for this one. That night was full of laughter, smiles, and hundreds of happy memories.
One being the frosting incident.
After dinner, that night, Iris, Barry, and I crowded into the small kitchen to decorate gingerbread cookies. The house was filled with the warm scent of cinnamon and sugar, and Christmas music from the local radio station played faintly in the background.
“Well, I’m pretty sure my cookies are going to be the best,” boasted Barry, standing in front of his work of art with his hands on his hips in triumph.
“And how do you know that, Barry?” Iris challenged him, carefully piping a snowflake made of white icing onto a golden brown cookie.
“I’ve got mad frosting skills, Iris, that’s why.”
I just stood there, listening to their conversation as I covered my cookie in little white dots of sugary frosting. Until I came up with a mischievous idea. Interrupting the debate going on between Barry and Iris, I gently tapped Iris on the shoulder and quietly whispered something inaudible about Barry in her ear. A smile slowly crept onto her face as she nodded her head.
“What are you talking about, Monica? Anything important?” Barry interrogated me, taking two steps closer.
“Oh nothing,” I said with a bag of frosting in my hand.
“Just that… I’ve got mad frosting skills too...” I screamed as I began to squeeze icing all over Barry’s face. Behind me, Iris was dying of laughter before Barry’s facial expressions went from shock to pure rage.
“Oh Monica,” he breathed, taking a step forward with his hands behind his back. “Two can play this game.”
Instantaneously, he took a bag of frosting into his hands, haphazardly squeezing all of its contents like a water gun, hitting both me and Iris. The laughter and screaming coming from the three of us was so loud we didn’t hear the footsteps hurriedly walking towards the kitchen.
“Guys… What’s going on in-?” A huge glob of frosting was flung into Joe’s face and once all of us realized what had just happened, the whole house fell quiet.
“J-Joe...I-I can explain,” stammered Barry. Joe wiped the frosting off his face and onto the now filthy floor.
“There’s no need to explain Barry. Just make sure all of this is cleaned up in thirty minutes.” As Joe began to turn around, I couldn't help but point it out.
“Oh…um… Mr. West?” Joe stared into my face.
“Yes, Monica?”
I pointed to his face “Y-you…. you’ve got a little frosting in your eyebrow.” Barry started to giggle as Joe slowly turned away, wiping the frosting from his eyebrow with his index finger.
The next morning I was woken up by someone shaking me back and forth
“Mon…Monica.”
I slowly rolled over and swatted Barry’s arm away.
“What do you want, Bartholomew?” I asked, followed by a long yawn.
“First of all, you know I go by Barry. Second of all, you’ve got to go outside!” he exclaimed, grabbing onto my forearm and pulling me off of the sofa. I was half asleep, so I allowed him to continue dragging me to the front door until a cold blast of air sent shivers down my spine. I finally opened my eyes the rest of the way to find an enchanting white blanket of snow covering the neighborhood.
Briskly, Barry let go of my arm and awkwardly ran over to the snow. His face was beaming with joy and I couldn’t help but join him in his sappy bliss. Instantly I ran over to him and both of us dropped to the floor, moving our arms and legs, attempting to make snow angels. For a while, the two of us just stayed there giggling and staring at the cloudy sky above.
“Monica?” I flopped my head to the side to meet Barry’s green eyes.
“Yes, Barry?” I answered.
“Will you please pinch me-?”
I rolled my eyes. “Come on Barry, you of all people should know that doesn’t-”
“Monica, just shut up and pinch me!” he yelled. Quickly, I sat up and took his plump little cheeks in between my thumbs and index fingers, pinching them as hard as I possibly could. Barry squealed and I fell back down into my original position as my body shook with laughter.
“Merry Christmas, Monica…” he whispered.
“Merry Christmas, Barry,” I said with a huge smile on my face.

Donica: we need a name for our baby what do you think. Based on your commander cold one-shot.
(Oh god, this is an old one)
“We need a name for our baby, what do you think?”
“Mostly that we have another five months to worry about that,” Monica shrugged.
“My parents didn’t narrow it down until Mom went into labor and was too tired to tell Dad then that he could not pick names that sounded way too alike,” Don replied.
“Well, what are your thoughts?” Monica asked, settling back against the couch cushions.
“Depending on if it’s a girl or a boy, then our parents’ names?” her husband suggested.
“Then…Leonard Bartholomew or Iris Sara?”

Library Company research fellow Monica Anke Hahn has been transcribing 1762 marginalia by Peter Collinson found in our copy of Maitland's History of London (1739):
"Those two nurserys of Vice & Lewdness, Bartholomew Fair kept in Smithfields, Southward Fair kept in the Borough, these had for ages continued to be held for Two Weeks Each, down to my Memory ... but growing so notorious for all manner of Wickedness it was often with concern such scenes of Debauchery & Immorality was propagated to the Ruining and undoing the youth of this Great Metropolis."
Over his years of ownership of History of London, Collinson tipped in numerous additional plates, plans, notes, documents, and clippings, with the last note dated just two years before his death.
Collinson played an enormous role in the life and career of Benjamin Franklin. Not only did Collinson “discover” Franklin, send him scientific equipment for experiments in electricity, and introduce him to members of the Royal Society for the first time, he also served as the first book purchasing agent for the Library Company of Philadelphia, Franklin’s historic experiment in democratizing knowledge.
You can see a portion of Collinson’s copy of the History of London here.

► Elizabeth Johnson
Born in 1904, Elizabeth Johnson is a 112-year-old creature as glamorous as she is deadly, who sustains herself with a healthy diet of sex and blood. She kills with her very fashionable, and very sharp, chain mail glove. "[2] She has owned and resided at the hotel for decades.
In 1925, while trying to become a famous actress, she met Rudolph Valentino and his wife Natacha Rambova, with whom she began a secret polyamorous relationship. Engaged in the romance of a lifetime, Elizabeth fell deeply in love with them, and was able to explore her bisexuality at a time in which it was considered unacceptable. Tragically, while attending the eve of the Hotel Cortez's grand opening, Elizabeth bared witness to the report that Rudolph had died, with Natacha having disappeared during his funeral. Devastated, Elizabeth almost threw herself out of a hallway window, but was saved by James Patrick March, who became instantly smitten with her. Shortly after, Elizabeth and James were married, but the marriage was not one of love, as Elizabeth only married him as a means of acquiring wealth since she could no longer be with Rudolph.
Concurrently, she visited Rudolph's tomb daily for months, leaving behind a single red rose in front of his epitaph as the mysterious "Woman in Black" of tabloid news. While continuing this routine, she was one day again met by Natacha, who revealed that Rudolph was still alive. After explaining that he had faked his death as a result of acquiring vampirism, which allowed him the opportunity to start his life anew, Rudolph afflicted Elizabeth as well so that they could run away together. Unfortunately, Rudolph and Natacha were beaten and kidnapped by James March, who sealed them in a wall of the hotel so that Elizabeth would believe they had abandoned her, forcing her to stay as James's wife.
In 1926, she visited Dr. Charles Montgomery at the Murder House and asked for an abortion which ended unsuccessfully, culminating in the birth of Bartholomew. In the 1970s she was fond of roaming LA's discotheques, wherein vampires could feed openly upon one another. In 1977, Elizabeth met Ramona Royale at the hotel and began a sexual relationship with her, promising that they would be together forever. As years progressed, however, they drifted apart, and eventually Ramona found a man that she thought to be the love of her life, Prophet Moses, whom she afflicted. When Elizabeth found out, she killed him and broke Ramona's heart, which made her bent on getting revenge.
In the 1980s, Nick Pryor checked into the Cortez as a man and Elizabeth helped her to come out to the world as a trans woman, christening her "Liz Taylor". In 1994, Elizabeth "turned" a young man dying of a heroine overdose and took him as her lover of the past twenty years, and made his mother the hotel's manager. In 2008, Elizabeth decided to make more money thanks to accountant Bernie Madoff, whom friends had recommended. After he was sent to prison for fraud, Elizabeth lost her material riches. In 2010, at a carnival in Santa Monica, Elizabeth took Holden, leading his parents to believe that he had been kidnapped or even killed. Various other towheaded children were captured and afflicted by Elizabeth as well, living in the hotel to serve as a healthy source of blood.
Fashionable and stunningly beautiful, Elizabeth is both complex and emotionally layered, having existed for a little over a century in an ever-evolving world of tragedy and decadence; a world that in equal measure has both created and controlled her. Cultured in all manner of art, music, literature, and high-end couture, Elizabeth lives out her immortal life on a thin veil between the affluent wealth of her past and the bizarre, otherworldly circumstances of her haunted abode. Relishing in her guise of a radiant, mysterious woman, Elizabeth captivates the hearts of unwary victims she lures to the peculiar depths of the Hotel Cortez - her home amongst the shadows, where she and her vampiric brethren can feast openly on human blood.
On the outside, Elizabeth appears nonchalant and cold, displaying a masterful personality that is exceedingly manipulative in the face of those she sees as useful to her goals, using her attractive appearance and sexual appetite to bend others to her will. She neglects to reveal her true nature to others until the time is right, waiting for the perfect moment to kill or dispose of those with value while simultaneously playing the role of an alluring, fascinating woman. She does not like to share what is hers, becoming violent in the face of those who choose to oppose her via threatening or murdering them, particularly when their demise allows her a valuable opportunity to attain something she has her sights on.
She compares feeding on her victims as little more than a "night out", implying that she enjoys her insatiable thirst for blood and does not consider the process of killing and feeding on humans as immoral, even attending an art gallery and fashion show for what she excitedly describes as "the hunt". She has no qualms in feeding on children as well, though she does not believe in killing them, preferring instead to make them "blood relatives" and feed on a limited amount of their blood at any given time. This indifference to mortals, having become a vital necessity in the hematophagy that allows her to retain her eternal youth, may have developed in her marriage to James Patrick March, during which she cultivated a gruesome fondness for hearing the screams of his victims opposed to them being silenced.
Elizabeth and Donovan go to a cemetery, where they find and seduce another attractive couple at a movie screening of Nosferatu. They take them to the hotel, and after feigning the beginning of a foursome, kill the other couple and feast upon their blood. Unbeknownst to any staff or resident, Elizabeth put the hotel on the market some time ago, having invited Will Drake to check it out the following morning. She takes Will's son, Lachlan, to a seemingly normal wall in one of the hotel's hallways, revealing a secret passage leading to a game room - the place where she keeps her bloodsucking children, which she presents to Holden.
While attending Will Drake's fashion show/party at the hotel, Elizabeth takes an interest in cocky male model Tristan Duffy. After going on a crazed search for drugs in the hotel, during which he becomes disturbed by the hotel's supernatural phenomena, he is hunted down by Elizabeth, who feeds him her own blood, thus afflicting him with the virus. She takes him to her suite and, while engaging in a passionate night with him, instructs him on the rules of being one of her kind. The following morning, she breaks off her relationship with Donovan, who is shocked and crestfallen at this sudden behavior. He reminds Elizabeth that upon her first turning him it was one of the most spiritual connections with another person she had ever had, but Elizabeth coldly responds that her turning Tristan was one of the most erotic. Donovan tells her he loves her and doesn't want for them to be apart, but Elizabeth responds that she wants him to get his things and leave.
