I just saw you associate Padme with lotuses which is really interesting because Naboo has lots of Asian and African inspiration and lotuses are the national flower of India and I’ve always thought she’d look so beautiful in Indian sarees and jewelry😍
Omg anon!! I’m so with you on that with Padmé and wearing ethnic South Asian clothing!! She’d totally rock all the sarees, lahengas, ghararas, etc!! As you said, Naboo culture is heavily based on Asian and African cultures, so I also love to picture Padmé in all types of ethnic gowns. Even a lot of the ones she wears on screen are heavily influenced by Mongolian culture and Japanese culture.

TOP 5 favourite movie costumes. It can be anything like most original outfits, those you consider the most descriptive for the character, personal favourites, impressive craft etc.
ohhh what a question. so i’m not an expert on costumes so this is purely based on vibes and what feels right in my spirit
1. starting off fresh we have everything padme amidala wore in phantom menace
Tumblr media
george wasn’t exactly being subtle with the japanese and mongolian reference points, but as a kid these made her mesmerizing to meeee and i was absolutely manically obsessed with her and every single look across all the films
2. in the same vein of stunning women that made me insane as a child is everything that connie nielsen wore in gladiator
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when i tell you my mother HAD IT with me walking around in table cloth runners and curtains trying to recreate her looks
3. continuing on with gowns but in a totally different vibe and theme, we have the Gender that is the gutter punk boyos in True History of the Kelly Gang
Tumblr media
4. we cant have a discussion about punk fashion in cinema without acknowlging Sid & Nancy
Tumblr media
5. lastly, The English, because I mean look

yeah this wasn’t the outfit I was talking about with the lekku, this one was defs all about actual real world appropriation, lmao. I find a lot of amadala’s costumes to be very frustrating, because I find the thing that most ties them together is appropriation, which unfortunately was very in in fashion at the time, with alexander mcqueen, galliano and gaultier making it very cool to pay no mind to where you got ideas from and if you did reference it, make sure you’re doing so with a cheeky kind of mocking irreverence.
so that was the climate that these costumes were cooked up in—as well as george lucas’ orientalism in the whole of star wars. The costume designers weren’t doing cheeky irreverence, I’m quite sure they would call it appreciation, but you know. the tearing up of cultural dress that is hundreds of years old and putting it with pieces of other cultures’ dress that you think it looks good with were totally on par with what designers were doing on runways for the next decade or so.
so yeah, in this ensemble padme is wearing a Mongolian headpiece, and Japanese inspired make up and Chinese colours and fabrics in this one outfit alone. and she would go on to wear faux locs, and all kind of other references to actual real world people.
I actually did a bit of a deep dive when I returned to the fandom and found a whole bunch of other things that were taken from real workd cultural dress all over the world, but uh, I’m really shitty at taking notes so I can’t tell you what they were lmao. just that like…there are very few original ideas in star wars costumes.
all of that said, the lekku hairsyle I was thinking of in the replies of the other post was this one:
Tumblr media
which if I recall is mostly derivative of medieval hairstyles from earth, but in-world it really does seem like she’s trying to look like a togruta

this star wars day (and aapi month) is a good day to remember and recognize that padme's outfits are literally lifted from japanese and mongolian culture and that the jedi order has a clear asian influence on it

Lmao as an Asian, I do agree with this. Padme is amazing and the costumes are stunning, but I always did feel uncomfortable with the obviously geisha inspried makeup. Now that I found out about how blatantly it ripped off Mongolian culture... yeah.
By all means, take inspiration from minority cultures but ffs please give some credits and don’t bastardize the meaning behind cultural dresses or makeup.
And I’m still keeping my belief that the Sith Pureblood species are based off Asian cultures too. I mean, the red skin and the tendrils/beard thing...
Also, Huttese (at least the ones you hear on Nar Shaddaa) sounds like a weird mix of Japanese and Chinese.

Padmé Amidala
I wasn’t kidding when I said this. Inspiration for her outfit comes from Japanese, Mongolian, and a smidge of Indian fashion (historical).
anyways, this a PSA. If I ever draw Padme, she will be Japanese and Mongolian. George Lucas can fuck off.

SHITTY MOVIE REC OF THE WEEK:
Nick Powell's OUTCAST (2014) starring Hayden Christensen, Yifei Liu, and Nicholas Cage.
(i know. i know. bear with me here.)
Dudes. First things first: this is Hayden Christensen's perfect come-back film. like sure this is not a Great Film but I honestly forgot how good Christensen was as a physical actor??? and DAMN. with the physicality of this role...he is so good. (and what’s so great about this is watching it immediately following the clone wars tv show is PERFECT because its the same form of Anakin we see there: a killer, but war-torn, hungry, dynamic.)
No, really. This is, I shit you not, the ultimate Anakin Skywalker AU Redemption Arc. But with more mohawks and stunning fight choreography and crazy good scenery and also did i mention mohawks. hayden christensen has a mohawk. anyways. if that alone doesnt make any sw fan want to watch this movie [on US Netflix too!!!] then 1. have fun living ur boring ass life??? 2. look at this photo, is that not rots skywalker to a t and 3. keep reading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO. Set in what we can assume is the late 1200s, early 1300s?? Hayden Christensen plays a Jedi Knight, sorry, TEMPLAR KNIGHT, named Anakin-- I MEAN JAKOB, who is fighting alongside his Master, Obi Wan Kenobi-- no, sorry, his MENTOR, NIC CAGE, in the Clone Wars, sorry, i mean THE CRUSADES. classic mix up.
SIDENOTE: If the guy who wrote this movie doesnt also have a secret ao3 account dedicated to his star wars prequel au fanfic collection that he’s been cultivating since high school then ill eat my fucking shoe.
(also idk what Cage’s character’s actual name is considering I, like everyone else in the world, can only refer to him as Nic Cage in any role ever. But back to the point.)
[spoilers ahead]
Alright. so.
Somewhere In The Middle East, Nic-Wan Kenobi witnesses his protégé's bloodlust in a battle that results in the deaths of a temple full of innocent women and children, (THE YOUNGLINGS... ANAKIN....) and naturally he goes awol, while Jakob/Anakin spirals down a guilt-driven descent into opium, believing himself to be Damned, Capital D, for his actions.
SIDE NOTE: Hayden looks especially good in this movie, but particularly when he’s PISSED OFF and EXTRA SAD. i dont want to use to the term smad but damn. smad is...a good look here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i digress.
(serious spoilers below:)
Here's where we enter fix-it fic mode: 3 years after the Crusades have ended, (and in true Kenobi style, Nic Cage has disappeared into the vast eastern wilderness with only his patchy grief-beard and an extra robe he’ll probably lose) a Chinese King is dying, and wishes to make his heir his gentle-hearted 13-year-old son. His elder son, a brutal war-monger, says FUCK U DAD, kills him and takes the throne, but not before their sister LIAN, played by the lovely YIFEI LIU, escapes with both her younger brother and the seal to the kingdom under the cover of night.
(this is basically TPM with shittier gender roles, but otherwise a pretty obvious parallel to the sw Naboo Invasion) And its EXTRA interesting to me because in the sw universe, Naboo court regalia is canonically based off of ancient chinese imperial robes, with aspects of certain japanese and mongolian formalwear as well. AND most of the jedi philosophies are bastardized variations of asian iconography and medieval knights errant, so its fun to see that played out on screen and it lets me draw parallels wherever i want which is always a major plus.
(SIDENOTE: during the escape, her little bro is all decked out in black clothes with dark accersories for night camouflage etc etc while Lian shows up looking hella fine in hand embroidered white silk like. bitch??? u thought i’d downplay my aesthetic for my own HEALTH and SAFETY?anyways what a gift and if im being honest that moment alone made me go, shit, fuck, padme. love of my life.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(she’s been running hard road for 2 days and just LOOK at her, jesus.)
but back to the plot.
While on the run from the SITH, I mean, the evil brother’s Black Guard, they happen to stumble into a cantina in the lower mountains, where they meet a drugged up, super smad Jakob pulling an Solo in the back of the bar.
( HELP ME... JAKOB.... WHOEVER THE FUCK U ARE--)
The Black Guard then tries to take his LIGHTSABER, I mean, his special, holy, papal blessed broadsword, which ends up being a really bad move. (It's interesting how they play the scene as well: from under the brim of his hat, they make sure his eyes glow bright angry yellow in the reflection of the candles around the table. like. they switch angles and everything just so you’ll notice. It's all very Vader-esque.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[MUFFLED ‘VADER’S THEME’ PLAYING IN THE DISTANCE]
Also immediately after this he pulls a Complete Anakin and flips a fucking table so people will pay attention to him, i love this boy, oh my god, he then proceeds to murder everybody in the bar, which is just. wildly satisfying.)
SIDENOTE: its important to acknowledge the fact that first time director Nick Powell is also a well known fight choreographer and has been a hardcore stuntman for most of his career, so the real highlights in this movie are the GLORIOUS action scenes. Honestly, the sword fights in this movie are some of the best ive ever seen onscreen. and Hayden is absolutely magnetic. 10/10 would recommend just for that alone.
ANOTHER SIDENOTE: Lian also knifes a dude in the neck here w/ her jeweled hairpin. So thats #neat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
coincidentally, this also happens to be the moment where both Jakob and I fell in love. also #neat
(AND. this star wars concept art from ROTS and these shots of lian and jakob. discuss:)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(im the guy silently sweating in the back)
ANYWAY.
After witnessing Vader, I mean, Jakob, utterly destroy a full contingent of bad guys, Padme, I mean, LIAN, asks him to help get them to Xing Yuan, a city several days ride away that holds their father's army generals, who will support them and help them take back the throne. Jakob agrees, and then there's lots of exciting action sequences and Anakin and Padme falling in love (SIDENOTE: TRUE TO FORM, ANAKIN IS TERRIBLE @ FLIRTING IN LITERALLY ANY UNIVERSE. GOD BLESS.)
BUT beyond that human disaster, this movie is so underrated. paralleling the sw plotline, the boy king gets his own little padawan training lessons, we get some crazy acrobatic swordfights here and there, they run into obi wan where he’s been hiding in the woods for a decade (#consistency) and its all very dramatic and on ridiculously shaky historical ground but who cares guys thats not why ur watching it in the first place.
We all know why ur watching it in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the plot. you’re watching it for the plot.

i think my only problem with racebending padme and leia is that its only chinese actresses people use, even though padme's outfits appropriated mongolian outfits. and mongolio and china have a history, and its not a good one.
I understand that this has been an ungoing discussion between some anons/blogs and mod v/velonius, but I wanted to throw my two cents in, as someone really active in the fandom:
almost none of the words you said in your ask are true.
Most people don’t racebend Padmé at all. Go to Weheartit or Pinterest and search for Padmé aesthetics. Go to @/dailyprequels and see how many of the edits reblogged are racebends (not blaming them but the people who post them). They are all either white girls or faceless pictures. Maybe an east-asian girl here or there, but with no way of knowing who this girl is (since reverse-search won’t work because they are always cropped/edited pictures), you don’t know whether this woman is Jewish, Christian, or an Atheist, or whether she’s Chinese, Japanese or part Mongolian or a mix of them. You can’t assume, either, for obvious reasons.
There are very, very few people who are deliberate in their faceclaim/fancast choices when it comes to Padmé Amidala, and most of them choose Desi actresses/models. I don’t know even one (1) blogger who’s as passionate for chinese Padmé as some who hc her as another ethnicity.
On another note, Padmé’s character design steals from Mongolian, Indian, Chinese, Korean, and even, arguably, Native American culture, among possibly others. Yes, specifically chinese: “(…) costume designer Trisha Biggar aimed to give it a “sort of Chinese Imperial feel” (x).
The solution is not to start waaaah-ing at people (especially asians, since lbr they are the ones who racebend her the most) having different fancast choices for an orientalist character, about who’s right and who’s not, because all of you (chinese fancast, mongolian fancast, desi fancast, korean fancast) are right in a way. Her whole design, Naboo’s whole design, is an orientalist caricature at this point.
I’m not asian myself, and I don’t know whether you or the other people arguing this are, either, so maybe we should respect Asian people’s prerogative in their fancasts for Padmé, or we shut the hell up about it.

A Padme geonosis fit redesign and a redraw of that one Anakin shot.
Realised that I’d never drawn Padme and the last time I drew Anakin was a year ago, so I’m happy with this. The tragic messed up couple ever.

As a Japanese who is aware of this, there are many Japanese/Asian costumes implemented in Star Wars if you look closely.
If I'm not mistaken Padme's costume resembles a Mongolian traditional outfit worn by women, but I forgot which one.
In terms of the ones I could identify as Japanese influences, some I have issues with but Darth Vader resembling Masamune is something Sasuke would fanboy about.
SO MA GIRL @kiera-anne-in-wonderland TAUGHT ME SOMETHING QUITE INTRESTING THAT I DIDN'T KNOW YET AND SO-
Tumblr media
WHY NO ONE HAS EVER DONE THAT REFERENCE YET????
Tumblr media
*walks around the battlefeild whilst the Imperial March is playing in the background*
(I'd go in the dark side with Masamune anytime baby)

Can we talk about the clear Asian inspiration in Star Wars, because there’s certainly more of that than there are Asian actors in the movies.
It’s one thing to be inspired, it’s another to completely rip off without actual credit to the source. Padme’s headdress here is clearly modeled after a Mongolian headdress (first picture here), though it’s just one example out of many. Even her makeup is clearly inspired by geisha paint, and her hairdos are more often than not clearly inspired by traditional Japanese hairstyles. Going even further than that, look at the Jedi—there’s obviously inspiration from Buddhism there. Yet the cast is predominantly white, and Asian representation is next to none (background characters you see as extras do not count). I could talk about this for days but I’m writing this during class, so feel free to add other examples.

hi! hope this wont sound like i m trying to start a fight, also sorry ig took it down. my question is regarding your padme - why isnt she light skinned? i m of mongolian descent myself and i found your concept very exciting. did you base her on some specific tribe, that s why?
So, I based her generally off of Khulan Chuluun in terms of face structure, etc, though I commented that she isn’t just Mongolian, she’s also Japanese. And also, I kinda based her off myself? Because I am a relatively dark skinned (East) Asian and I think that we darker Asians need more rep in media because we hardly get any.
