Cephalopod Week wouldn't be complete without at least one flapjack octopus video! 🥰

MBARI’s robotic submersibles often spot this little octopus resting on the mud, its orange body resembling a flat, fluffy pancake. When startled by a predator, a flapjack octopus perks up and swims to safety by flapping its stubby fins, pulsing its webbed arms, pushing water through its funnel for jet propulsion—or all three at once. When the coast is clear, it stretches its webbed arms and parachutes back to the seafloor.

Starting the week off with a little medusa magic. ✨

These little red jellies (Benthocodon pedunculata) were captured frolicking in Monterey Bay at 440 meters (1,444 feet). We often see these tiny treasures bobbing just above the deep seafloor like little red UFOs.⁠ ⁠ There are lots of little red jellies in the midnight zone, so many that it’s often difficult for researchers to tell them apart. MBARI scientists have spent years collecting and analyzing data to distinguish these species from one another based on their shape and form. In 2020, they developed a key to help scientists tell these look-alike species apart through their physical differences, depth distribution, and behavior.⁠

In our newest unofficial video series—nope, we’re not moving—we confirm that deep-sea skates do indeed hide from Monday by not moving. 🙃

Skates and rays are fishes related to sharks. They have a distinct, flattened body, and they swim and glide using a pair of large, wing-like fins. While we know a lot about the skates and rays that dwell in shallow coastal waters, we know relatively little about those that call the ocean’s inky depths their home.⁠ ⁠ We often encounter skates resting on the sediment or skimming across the seafloor. Along with their expanded pectoral fins, some skates use their pelvic fins like legs to maneuver while hunting along the bottom or to propel themselves off the seafloor when danger approaches. ⁠ You can learn more about these relaxed deep-sea residents in our Animals of the Deep gallery.
