My momtastic evening

I seriously had the most momtastic evening of all time.

Made salmon and asparagus in the oven, ate it with a tangerine La Croix watching Mamma Mia! (2008) and then did dishes while listening to one of my favorite podcasts.

Then I topped it off with a healthy chocolate tart and some decaf.

I wish I had time to re-pot my plants tonight, but it’s already 10 and I should get ready for bed.

Wow, is this what being almost-30 feels like? I kind of love it.

Both women have talked about how they initially found Hammer charming and charismatic. He entered their lives quickly and before they knew it, he became a persistent presence in their lives. Lorenze said that her relationship with Hammer began right after she moved cross-country to Los Angeles — mind you, she was fresh out of a difficult long-term relationship and was feeling vulnerable prior to becoming entangled in Hammer’s web.

Lorenze and Vucekovich both mention how his compliments were so grand and over the top that they sounded like a script from a movie. Lorenze has said on public record that he would say things like, “you’re like art”.

He made both women feel loved and cherished. He showered them in devotion, using it as a tactic to gain control of them without them realising it.

Lorenze details how she would have done just about anything for Hammer. She was at his mercy. They entered a sadomasochist relationship, which Hammer used to disguise his skewed and misinformed version of BDSM. Before Lorenze could fully notice Hammer’s true motive, it was too late — he had left the young woman mentally scarred and physically mutilated as a result of his abuse.

You might think that what has happened to Lorenze and Vucekovich was rare.

Not all overly romantic men turn out to be abusers. And while this is true, it can be hard distinguishing someone who is loving from an individual luring you into their web of narcissistic abuse in the initial stages of a relationship.

According to clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula, who has spent much of their career focussing on narcissistic abuse, the way a victim describes their partner is key to determining the difference between romance and abuse.

“In all my years doing this work, not once did someone, when describing the early months with a narcissistic partner, describe the partner as “kind,” “respectful” or “warm”. The more common adjectives were “fun”, “exciting”, “charming,” “life of the party”, “commanding,” “charismatic,” “good on paper”, “smart”,” says Durvasula.

The exciting and socially confident narcissist worships you in the beginning stages of the relationship. It’s as if they’ve put a spell on you. When you’re with them, they make you feel like you’re in a dream. It’s so thrilling that the red flags aren’t going to be obvious.

Why would you doubt someone who makes you feel beautiful, desired, and loved? If he was insulting you, being aggressive and making you feel horrible about yourself, you would be running for the hills. But they’re not, so you’re on top of the world and ignorant of what they’re actually doing to you.

You’re addicted and when this happens, the narcissist moves onto the next phase — devaluation.

Having been together nearly a decade, the couple may seem unshakeable by now, but their relationship didn't start off on such solid footing. Libby hates kale. Kara is so proud

Kara lifts the lid off the pot on the stove to peer inside, grimacing as a cloud of steam hits her in the face. “Ew, Lena, what is that?”“It’s kale. I’m cooking it for Libby.”“As a punishment?” Kara lifts Libby out of her high chair and cradles her protectively.Lena raises an eyebrow. “Kale is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. It’s good for you.”

“I know that, but Lena, come on. She’s just a baby. She doesn’t deserve that.” Kara punctuates her sentiments with a kiss to Libby’s forehead.

“I just want to see if she likes it.”

“No one likes kale.”

“I like kale,” Lena huffs, crossing her arms.

“That’s just what the vegetable industrial complex wants you to think.”

“The what?”

“The vegetable industrial complex. Big Green. They’re orchestrating a vast conspiracy to trick people into thinking kale isn’t disgusting.”

Lena laughs. Kara sounds so damn sincere. “Oh, really?”

“Yes, Lena. How do you think kale became so popular when it’s so revolting?”

“Kara, there’s nothing wrong with the taste of kale.”

“Lena, there’s something wrong with your taste buds.”

Lena scoffs. “I have a very refined palate.”

“So do I.”

“Your favorite food is pizza.”

“Pizza is, objectively speaking, a perfect food. I don’t make the rules, Lena. That’s just science.”

“I don’t think that’s true.” Lena takes kale off the stove and runs it through a food processor.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“If she doesn’t like it she never has to eat it again. I just want her to try new things. Next time you can pick a vegetable for her to try, ok?”

Kara looks skeptical, but eventually acquiesces. “I guess that’s ok.”

“Will you put her back in her high chair?” Lena scoops pureed kale into a bowl and grabs a baby spoon.

Kara slips the baby back into the chair and buckles her in.

“Are you ready, my darling?” Lena asks, and Libby babbles a reply. “That’s my good girl.”

“I don’t know about this,” Kara says, holding up her phone. “Momtastic.com says you should mix it with things that actually taste good before giving it to her.”

“Momtastic? Seriously?” She sighs. “Let’s just give this a try, and go from there, ok?”

Kara scowls but doesn’t say anything.

“Ok my love, here you go.” Lena offers a spoonful of kale to Libby.

She takes a bite, and immediately her whole face contorts into a frown and she spits the kale puree out. Kara is there quickly with a rag to wipe her face and soft words of reassurance to calm her.

“She hates it.” Lena says, deflating. She feels genuinely guilty for feeding it to her now. “Will you get her a jar of plums? She actually likes those.” She bends down to kiss her baby on the top of the head. “I’m sorry, darling.”

Kara feeds Libby some plums and in no time she’s back to her happy smiley baby self.

Lena, feeling a tad forlorn about everything, tries a bit of the kale puree and recoils in disgust. It’s horrible. She rinses the bowl out and dumps the rest of it down the garbage disposal.

“Kara, I think you might be right about that conspiracy.”
