Motherhood: An Act of Infinite Optimism

It is true that being a mother changes your perspective in life. It’s like a 180 degree turn from the life you were used to - after giving birth to such a fragile yet precious gift.

And what else would be more important to a mother after going through such an arduous journey of the first few years of her baby’s life? Of course it is her own child’s health & well being.

Let me share with you my own experience of holding on to the side of optimism despite roadblocks and the unexpected turns that life threw at me as a FIRST TIME MOM; and how I achieved the health I wanted for my child - because we all want the best for our kids right?

To be honest, when I first gave birth to my eldest son, I had ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE as to what I was suppose to do. After all, having and giving birth doesn’t come with an instruction manual! And that fact hit me hard and left me guessing on what the next steps should be, especially with regards to his health. But I thought to myself “If others have done it, so can I”. Saying that over and over in my head helped me move on that day, and conquer my fear of what lies ahead. I kept in mind that, my mom has been through this, my aunties, my grandmas and they all turned out fine. So from there, I followed my instincts and decided to exclusively breastfeed my child. 

The first few months wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but I bravely faced the challenges of a breastfeeding mother. There were sleepless nights, utter exhaustion, back pain from nursing at a certain position, sore and sensitive nipples, over production of milk and a whole lot more. But despite all the difficulties, I still tried my best to remain positive and continued to breastfeed my son Charles. Sadly, the bond that we shared in the 6 months that I was nursing him, came to an end when I suddenly developed mastitis.

“Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast or udder which is usually caused by an infection.”

Knowing I had this, broke my heart because our breastfeeding journey fell short. I had no choice but to stop and resort to other means. After trying several other milk options, my husband and I settled on organic infant milk. And thank God it worked for him. Honestly, that time I felt like I was an inadequate mom, I felt unsure of myself because I had failed to hit our breastfeeding goal of at least 1 year. But again, I stayed strong and trusted the Lord with what he has given me. Again I remained optimistic.

Soon after, when Charles was able to eat solids, we tried introducing different varieties of food to him, which mostly consisted of vegetables. It was smooth sailing for the first few weeks since he ate almost anything, but for some reason, when he was nearing 1, he began to get picky. Charles poked at the meals we served him and refused to eat! He even went on a hunger strike! (Imagine my frustration then!)

Because of that, I went on a hunt for appetite stimulants and multivitamins that I hoped could work for him. The first few that I tried which were readily available in local drugstores somehow did the trick, but only for a few days. *Sigh* So, the search continued. And while searching, my son became sickly and his immune system weakened. We were in and out of hospitals and pediatrician appointments MONTHLY, because of recurring coughs & colds. It even came to a point that he was diagnosed with Pneumonia, and we had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. 

Believe me, I tried almost every supplement out there. Until I discovered USANIMALS.

Since then, his appetite improved and our trips to the doctors lessened. Thank goodness!

So remember that as mothers, it is us whom our children will look up to & follow. It is us that they would look for comfort & security in. Mothers - the beacon of inspiration, strength, love and support. So let that show, let the positivity flow from you to them. Don’t let anxiety, failure or stress consume you. Because if you do, then what will happen to your family then? Be strong, stay strong, be positive.
