I'm watching Vampire in the Garden, an anime miniseries on Netflix. It seems to be set in vaguely 20th century fantasy Russia, near the end of the human resistance to the vampire takeover. It's cool seeing this level of WWII-ish tech being leveraged against the vampires, with extra focus on spotlights, lasers, and flashbangs to counter their specific weakness

Episode one starts off compelling. Main human girl, Momo, is the daughter of the human resistance commander, but is having a Bad Time in the military. Looks like humans went scorched earth on their own culture to deny the vampires; very Russian

Episode two establishes this is proper yuri. Momo's friend is definitely her girlfriend ("let's grow old together"). Vampires are always an allegory for something terrible humans do, so it's interesting that they have a Shimmer-like drug to turn them into real monsters. Fitting that the impetus for Momo breaking with the humans is her mother ordering the military to fire on a vampire even while she's still in the crossfire. Humans have also become the real monster

I can't get over the vampire lieutenant carrying his stupid little pug around everywhere. I'm pretty sure that's the only living creature we've seen so far other than humans and vampires

Episode three is suddenly yuri road trip. I guess I didn't mention the other protagonist, Fine, the vampire princess who refuses to drink blood (just alcohol) and is the one who saved Momo in ep 2. Also the cars are 3d rendered and do not interact with the 2d backgrounds properly; they're almost as bad as the horses in Apothecary Diaries

Oh, very interesting finding another human settlement. The first two eps seemed to establish the lighted city as the last holdout of humanity. Now we've reached another vampire city with a proper human ghetto, where there's trade in blood and money between the two sides. Still awful, but very different to the active war of extermination back where Momo is from

Stupid dog has a hat now

Episode four opens with them finally finding the paradise where humans and vampires live in harmony. (I'm a little confused how they wandered there across the frozen artic ocean, but I guess that's not important.) I expect something sinister to be lurking underneath. The child vampire wanting a friend her age seems odd, implying they only get new inhabitants via "immigration," but there seem to be younger children too. (How are there children vampires? Do they reproduce sexually?) The captive vampire in the medical sub is obviously sus, but I also wouldn't want a strange vamp loose until you know they won't attack your humans

Oh yeah, there's a yuri moment. Fine thinks her being here with Momo will endanger her and ruin her happiness, so's gonna leave without a word and break Momo's heart that way instead. Always happens

Having an Omelas kid vampire as the electrical generator for the whole village is not the twist I was expecting. Dang

Final episode. It seemed like Momo and Fine walked for a couple of days before collapsing in range of the northern village. The military convo said it would take 6 hours to drive across the frozen lake to reach the village. Now minutes into the car chase from the village, they've gone through a forest and reached a major abandoned city. Geography seems to be pretty loose in this story

I love that, truly enjoyed those names, and I am here to contribute photos of my neighbor's dog, Doobie, and my dog, Honey's puppies she had last year. We named them before they went to their new home, and I personally think they are a triumph in naming Pug(Dad)/Malti-Terrier-Poo(Mom) puppies.

Someone give me a fanfic were the two of them faked there deaths and are now living happily somewhere.

Or a fanfic where Fine takes back the throne after eden and uses what she saw there as a means to inforce a utopian society on everyone all for momo. The unruly ones from both side will either be killed, imprisoned, or used as blood supply. They wanted her to be the queen so bad? She'll be it but she's doing her way even if not everyone likes it. Her and momo will make their own eden.

So! The elephant in the room: Momo's age. I started watching Vampire in the Garden because, like many people, I thought it was going to be a gl romance. It is natural to assume that a girl who has been trained to fight vampires and does factory work would be at least 18. There are tons of animated characters that are adults despite having baby faces! That's why it was more than a bit surprising when Momo's uncle said she was "around 14" in episode 5

(or was it 4? either way, it was late)

I can't be 100% whether or not it was a conscious decision to reveal her age so late, but let's say it was! I think Momo's age, along with what we learn about the woman Fine loved, could have been a way to make us see Momo and Fine's relationship in another light. Vampire in the Garden is no longer a love story, at least not in the romantic sense. It is a story about two girls that are searching for a place to belong.

I don't think Fine was over the woman she was in love with, or would ever be. She even says that she saw Momo as a replacement at first. Fine taught Momo how to live her life to the fullest, like the woman taught her. I think that Fine still had some regret/guilt about the woman's death that turned into her becoming protective of Momo. I could go on and on about the parallels between Fine’s relationship with Momo and her relationship with the woman, but the gist is that she wanted to give Momo a better life — even if there is no such thing as paradise.

maybe Momo did have a crush on Fine, but who wouldn't? Fine saved her. The important thing is that I don't think those feelings were reciprocated.

Is Vampire in the Garden an amazing anime? That depends. I know many people were unhappy with the ending and I kinda am too.

I wish the anime were longer so we could have seen Momo learn why her uncle was so against her being friends with a vampire. I wish we could have learned more about the vampires. How did they get there? Why no music? yeah yeah, the vampires have sensitive ears. but then why was talking not an issue?
