it's interesting that they made selina catherine of aragon in that one issue when i always suspected personality-wise she would make a better anne boleyn than catherine. your thoughts?

DEFINITELY more of an Anne Boleyn, though I also see many similarities to her and Cathrine Howard’s tragic life.

For those who don’t know, we’re referring to Batman (1940) #319, where Selina and Bruce attend a costume party together dressed as king Henry VIII, and his first wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon.

Now obviously, if you know anything about these real life historical figures, this is an unhinged concept for a couples costume 😭

…but it’s most definitely something i can believe those two would think of lmao, I wouldn’t read too much into it as symbolism to batcat’s actual dynamics or characters. Bruce would never treat Selina or any woman the way King Henry VIII treated his.

For Queen Anne Boleyn and Selina, since i’m obsessed with both, I can for sure see some similarities. A “dark beauty” looked down upon by those set above her, an extremely intelligent and charismatic woman that can woo almost anyone, a woman who wouldn’t accept powerlessness.

And again, I’m sure this doesn’t need saying if you know these historical figures, but I would not compare Anne Boleyn’s marriage with the king to Batcat, as I personally believe when Anne told him “no” (refusing to be his mistress) she MEANT it. I believe once he finally proposed to her, she saw it as a genuine act of God, and may have believed it was her destiny to bring about the reformation and rise of Protestantism. Which is actually why I think she accepted.

All in all, if this were written today, I think the writers probably would have had Selina dressed as Anne instead, if only because now she is a “sexier” character for Catwoman to be dressed as, but at the time, Queen Catherine was the better option as a less scandalous figure. Remember, this issue was written in 1979, and Anne’s image, despite a very good cinematic portrayal in “Anne of the thousand days” from 1969, as well as the way we view women in general, would have much rehabilitation to go through still before the public would begin to stop seeing a conniving woman playing hard to get with a married man. Not really the image you want for the main love interest of your story.

i love thinking about how they met, i love thinking about it...i feel like it really puts a lot into context about both of them! they both were going in to pick up prescription glasses they ordered and for whatever reason, their sets were switched, their prescriptions are not even the same (peony is pretty strong, she's farsighted) and runo is nearsighted i believe and although weaker than peony, he has a astigmatism so its still pretty bad. they're both legally blind without their glasses

when peony noticed the mistake instantly, she was right away telling people, and they assured her that her correct glasses definitely came in, but they must have been misplaced! peony immediately launched into full investigation, checking everywhere she could, although the employees were telling her to just...sit down....girl youre bumping into everything....youre farsighted so its not like you can see in these drawers or anything

when runo got his wrong glasses, he was like. well. i guess i made a mistake. i guess this is my life now. fully prepared to just accept this quietly and stumble home (he was really prepared to just ditch his car and call an uber or something) he did notttt want to cause a problem. he was just gonna live the rest of his life without vision, because working up the courage to get in here the first time was like pulling teeth!!!!

peony was asking anyone she could if they had seen her prescription, as the desk ladies tried to get her to sit down and just wait for the techs to find them (or set her up with a new order) then runo comes stumbling out and peony pounces on him. hey those are MINE

then they look at each other with clear vision and they're like uh wait. heyeeeyyy do you wanna like get coffeeee....???

If there is something that I wish I could redo it would be my history class from this past school year. I spent way too long hating my teacher before realizing that she is literally an angel sent to earth and that I love her so much.

I didn’t like her teaching style at first, but then I realized it actually made me learn. I just wish I didn’t spend so much time hating her class, because I love history. I would talk to her about random history crap all the time.

She was also a big newsies fan, and she even let me leave after my midterm to go watch the middle school performance of Newsies. Every time we went over Yellow Journalism or anything that had to do with the press she would point at me and mention newsies. She’s just as weird as me, I love her and would die for her. I’m actually really sad I’ll never have her as a teacher again. T-T

I might take AP Psych just to have her as a teacher again.
