Bram Stoker's Hannibal Chapters 74, 75, and 76
I DID IT.
We have, at last, reached THE MOMENT we've all been waiting for.
This moment:
youtube
I wrote all the way up to this moment and then slowly edited and released chapters just to make sure I covered everything I wanted to cover. Normally I just write a chapter, edit it, post it, move on. But I wanted to be extra careful that I didn't miss anything I wanted to include.
Chapter 74:
It's a Bottom Hanni chapter! Now, I know the top/bottom debate is always a thing, but I'm a firm believer in Bryan's designation that they switch. Normally I prefer to write bottom Will, but I also fully believe that Hannibal is a hedonist and would do anything that feels good, like getting railed by his mongoose. Also fun fact, being a vampire means you don't have to do much prep for anal because you don't eat food, and the immortal body can withstand plenty of abuse. So we do have some steamy bottom Hanni action in this chapter, as Will seems to search his lover's body for any evidence of... what exactly?
(I found this on pinterest, if you know the creator lmk this is perfection -- it has actually MAJOR Iliya and Hannibal vibes more than Will and Han)
Oh hey little known fact: Lenore from the brothel? It's Molly Shannon's character, the woman who collected "Lost Boys." Now she collects lost sex workers to make her perfect family of high-class courtesans. I didn't delve too much into this side story because hey, news flash, THIS FIC IS REALLY FUCKING LONG. But now you know who I was envisioning:
Chapter 75:
If you google Hetienne Park cowboy hat this is what you get:
Howdy partner!
Hetienne Park as Beverly Katz as Quincey Morris!
Anyway, Jack Van Crawford asks everyone to continue to help him in his mysterious quest, which is about to take an even darker turn. They're headed back to the graveyard to prove once and for all to everyone involved that Alana is UnDead. The gang heads back to Highgate and runs into the "bloofer lady" that's been kidnapping children and biting their necks...
I made this just for y'all. It's my attempt at photo manip LOL I know I'm not that good at it.
Now that they know Alana's undead, what's Jack Crawford's Scooby Gang to do?
Meanwhile, Hannibal and his wolf pack murder the zookeeper at the London Zoological gardens, who happens to be the Clark Ingram character. I didn't make him a serial killer in this AU, just a guy who likes to torture animals. I've always seen him as the anti-Peter Bernadone, who cares so deeply for every life large and small. So I thought it made sense to cast this motherfucker as the kind of guy who would beat caged wolves on the head with a wooden pole to make them compliant.
Seriously, fuck this guy.
Fun behind the scenes facts: The London Zoological Gardens were established as a place for the scientific study of animals, and to move the menagerie of creatures out of the Tower of London where they'd been kept since the 1100s. The Tower of London is haunted by the ghost of a bear that had been kept there.
Here are some time period pics from the zoo. You can see, of course, why the wolves begged Hannibal to help them escape.
All right, that's it for now! Here's a SMUTTY SIGN-OFF:
He has me pinned against the pillows and the headboard, my body rolling upward as he thrusts into me at an unrelenting pace, sweat gathering on his brow and dripping through his hair. His face is next to mine, buried against my cheek and the curve of my neck, panting and grunting in a lovely, beastial way. If I were human, I’d have to imagine this would hurt tremendously. It brings only the tiniest sensation of intimate pain, and I thoroughly enjoy it, whispering to him, encouraging him to let himself go. There is something desperate in the way he holds me so tightly, as if he could snap my bones; even after he comes, there is no break in his pace. Yet, the continuation seems more about spending something else besides his emission, and less about my pleasure. Grunting, he circles his hips, the slow grind teasing my inner rise, making me gasp. I touch myself, and he leans back, still rocking my body back and forth. Will puts his hand over mine, looking me in the eye, and a few strokes later I’ve tasted bliss, even as he keeps thrusting.
XOXO DB

He’d seen flashes of it in Baltimore: the night of Clark Ingram’s arrest and maybe even the first time they met, glimpsed from the corner of Will’s eye. Then in Italy, seated together at the feet of spring. He doesn’t think about the cliff – can’t, or else his lungs tighten and he feels like he can’t breathe, like he might be dying." (2.3k)

Captain's Quarters (G): Ed and Stede platonically share a bed and feel feelings, like pirates do. (2.3k)
Daylight (E): Ed doesn't know what to do with himself when Stede comes back, until he does. (2.1k)
🏡 Filled (E): Stede thinks about what it would be like if he could carry Ed’s child, which leads where all roads lead during Bottom Stede Week. (3.6k)
🏡 Filled Out (E): Ed tries to figure out how he feels about his body post-piracy. A post-season 2 inn fic. (1.6k)
🎙️ The Finer Points (G): Stede expands his fancy pants curriculum to include a simple waltz. (1.9k)
🏡 First Night (E): Truly just an entire fic of Ed and Stede making out in this shitty house. A post-season 2 inn fic. (2.1k)
Five Kisses (E): A chronicle of five important kisses on the good ship Blackbonnet. (2.3k)

I Feel Pretty (E): Stede engaging in body worship of Ed, his preferred occupation. (1.4k)
Interlude (E): A PWP missing scene from 2x08 because BOYFRIENDS. (1.7k)
Leather and Silk (E): A PWP based on the “leather and silk” bts we received from Samba 🙏. (1.6k)
Midnight on the Revenge (G): Literally just a smol fic about Stede holding Ed until he falls asleep because I need that, okay? (1k)
🤝 Milkmaid with @dracothelizard (E): Stede remembers the little song he and Ed sang at the floating market, and Ed decides it’s as good a day as any to show Stede the true meaning of “all things milk.” (4.6k)
🤝 Perfectly Ordinary Tuesday with @petrichorca (M): Dave just wanted a place to sleep for the night, but he gets a lot more than he bargained for when the owners of a seaside inn make him an unwitting participant in their wedding. Will he make it through the ceremony unscathed? And what’s that seagull doing here? (4.9k)
Pinned (E): Ed has been thinking about Calypso's Birthday since they arrived at the inn, specifically about Stede shoving him up against a wall - the strength of his arms, the look in his eyes. Maybe it's finally time to ask for a repeat performance. (2.5k)
🎙️ Reset (E): Ed notices Stede looking at him more than usual, leaving them both a bit hot and bothered. He proposes a failsafe plan to give them both a reset. What could go wrong? Set sometime between 2x05 and 2x06. (5k)
🤝 🎙️ Row Your Boat with @petrichorca (T): A missing scene following the events of season 2, episode 4, “Fun and Games.” Ed’s agreed to come back to the Revenge with Stede for the night, but they’ve got two dinghies to row back to the ship—will the distance between them linger? (3.3k)
🎙️ Skintight (E): Ed wears a set of lingerie that he's kept in the back of his closet before now. Stede does what anyone would do after seeing Ed in lingerie, bless him. (3.7k)

Sound Bites Presents: The Best of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2023
Editor’s Note: the 2023 edition of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass ended one week ago today. Having returned to backward Oiho after a glorious three days in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the blog recounts his favorite sets of the festival. Read Sound Bites’ full coverage here, here and here; and see more photos here, here and here.
Rickie Lee Jones - Horseshoe Hill stage, Sept. 29; Banjo stage, Sept. 30: Given 45 minutes for her festival-opening reading from “Last Chance Texaco” and another hour for music the following day, when she played the titular song from her 2021 memoir, Jones got more stage time than any other performer. And she put it to good use. After sound-checking with a snippet of “The Horses,” a high-spirited Jones read excerpts about her time as a 14-year-old hitchhiker in California and how her admiration of the hippie ideal eventually turned into contempt. She closed the session by playing a solo-acoustic version of “The Moon is Made of Gold,” a song written by her father.
The following afternoon, Jones and her band played to a ginormous crowd - “I haven’t seen so many people in front of me for so long,” she said, clearly enjoying the moment. Crooning at the mic on “One More for the Road;” playing guitar on a New Orleanian rearrangement of “Danny’s All Star Joint;” sitting at the piano for “We Belong Together;” and playing banjo on an untitled work-in-progress she had unveiled two nights earlier on guitar at the benefit for Camp Winnarainbow, Jones was effervescent and as appreciative of her audience as they were of her. Sound Bites obviously doesn’t know Jones, yet it made him so happy to see her so happy over the three days of performances he and Mrs. Sound Bites witnessed. Rickie Lee, gold.
Tommy Emmanuel - Arrow stage, Oct. 1 - Allotted a criminally stingy 50 minutes, Emmanuel was the only solo-acoustic act to make an audience stop talking and simply gasp at what they were hearing and seeing. That’s because he is a band unto himself and he introduced his phantom accompanists while playing bassline, percussion, rhythm and lead simultaneously on his acoustic guitar. “Sixteen Tons” and “Nine-Pound Hammer” found Emmanuel singing; “Imagine” was instrumental save for the audience and the guitarist’s famous, inhuman “Beatles Medley” closed the set, which should’ve run an hour.
Eilen Jewell - Rooster stage, Oct. 1 - Playing songs from her pre- and post-pandemic albums, Gypsy and Get Behind the Wheel, respectively, Jewell was positively enthralling during her 45-minute midday set, which wrapped with a near carbon-copy of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Green River,” allowing secret-sauce guitarist Jerry Miller to shine.
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram - Towers of Gold stage, Sept. 29 - At 24, Ingram sounds like he’s been playing guitar for 50 years already. This up-and-coming bluesman is going to be a huge star and he spent his 50 minutes demonstrating why he may very well be thought of in 2073 in the same way Buddy Guy is today.
The Travelin’ McCourys - Banjo stage, Oct. 1 - With Punch Brother Noam Pikelny filling in for Rob McCoury on banjo, the sons of Del played some of the least-Hardly Strictly music of the entire festival, as a large swath of the audience bounced along in unison while the band smoked a bluegrass “Scarlet Begonias” in the park the Grateful Dead filled with music so many times in the days of yore. “Seems appropriate,” Ronnie McCoury said.
Doc Watson Tribute - Horseshoe Hill stage, Oct. 1 - Joined at various points by Andrew Marlin, Valerie June and Jon Langford, Mitch Greenhill, Nora Brown and Stephanie Coleman offered an intimate set that included “Summertime,” “Handsome Molly” and “Tom Dooley” among others. It all ended with the life-affirming experience of a couple of hundred people singing “Keep on the Sunny Side” under a canopy of trees in a light afternoon fog.
Bettye LaVette - Rooster stage, Sept. 30 - At 77, LaVette remains a powerful performer, stalking the stage and employing her raspy voice to great effect. Bob Dylan may have written “Things Have Changed,” but LaVette owns it.
Irma Thomas - Rooster stage, Sept. 30 - Thomas, 82, played HSB’s most-rambunctious set, closing Saturday with a barnburner that reached its apex with “I Done Got Over It” -> “Iko Iko” -> “Hey Pocky Way” -> “I Done Got Over It.”
Honorable mention: The McCrary Sisters - Rooster stage, Sept. 30 - Rather than a full performance, which they merited, the McCrarys played a handful of five- to 15-minute spots that included uplifting renditions of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” and “Amazing Grace.”

Ooh, it wouldn't have occurred to me to think about those two murders together! I would say Hannibal and Will both feel some degree of interest/pity towards their victims in these cases, rather than pure revulsion, though both victims certainly do represent to each of them the parts of themselves they want to shrink away from.
In line with the point being made in the OP - it's worth noting that Will fantasizes that he's killing Hannibal as he kills Randall - a murder he wants to think of being about justice, and righteousness, but that he comes to realize is as wrapped up in the pleasure and thrill that that righteous high brings him as it is in the pursuit of justice. And Hannibal steers him towards this in the previous episode, when he stops him from killing Clark Ingram in the stable because "it wouldn't be like killing me." Will, in that moment, is still rushing into the scene as a cop, albeit one who's gone a bit rogue and chucked due process out the window. In the next episode, Hannibal serves up a murder opportunity for Will that does feel like killing Hannibal, and it's through someone who's more intimately connected to both of them - someone who reflects Hannibal's design, and what Will himself could be. It's thematically significant that to attempt to take Hannibal down, Will can't hide behind the veneer of the pursuit of justice - he has to get really immersed in Hannibal's world himself in the process.
I would disagree that Red Dragon the novel is all that optimistic about the healing power of heterosexuality or the family, though. The ending implies that Will's marriage is not long for this world, and there's foreshadowing of that throughout the book - Will remembering his fear when he and Molly first got together that their relationship wouldn't last, and the cracks in his place in the family structures, like the friction between him and Molly's in-laws, being exacerbated by his involvement in the case. (And Silence of the Lambs doesn't make it sound as though he's in a happy or stable place.) I actually think there's an interesting potential reading of the novel about the illusion of stability or protection in the family structure - Will's attempt to move on with a family being punctured by the fact that their home becomes the killer's final site of invasion. On a symbolic level at least, his family makes him more of a target.
The book ends on the note that he hasn't actually been able to put everything behind him, and he's kind of irreparably a traumatized and fucked-up person. Hannibal the show picked up on this theme - that he can't stay detached by coming back for the Red Dragon case - but incorporated it in to the queer transformation analogy, and the inescapable magnetism that his bond with Hannibal holds.
Frustratingly, both the film adaptations of the book give it a happier ending, in which he happily returns to his family. It's a choice that removes a lot that's interesting and subversive about the book, imo. That's part of why I think NBC Hannibal actually features the best existing adaptation of that book.
Hannibal has a really interesting and profound thesis about self discovery if you are cool and queer enough to read into it but I genuinely think my favorite motif in Hannibal that seems to recur a few times in that vein is “killing parts of yourself do not work”.
See, Hannibal snaps Franklyn Froideveux’s neck in the same episode we get him discussing his obsession with Will with his own therapist, Bedelia. Hannibal’s disgust with Franklyn is a disgust with himself, and he kills Franklyn only to find himself more desperately fascinated by Will than ever
In contrast, Will kills Randall Tier at Hannibal’s prompting, and ostensibly he does it as part of his becoming, to maintain the “illusion” that he is going to run away with Hannibal, but this isn’t the only time Will kills a serial killer that’s more evolved in their Becoming than he is- but it is the first time he did it with his hands.
The very act of killing Tier, of trying to kill off the savage animal part of himself, brought him closer to that brink, closer to monsterhood. For what is more savage than self denial, and the killing of brethren?
I find it interesting because in the book Red Dragon, Will SUCCEEDS in killing off this part of himself. Or, Molly does. With the Red Dragon’s death, he retires to fucking Florida. Vicious repression and suburban heterosexuality wins. And in the show, killing the Dragon, a parallel to Will’s becoming, only succeeds in transforming him further under the flame
#anyway! generally agree with the overall point and it's a great one#just had some additional thoughts + a need to go to bat for red dragon#god. i know a lot of people like manhunter but the changed ending really sticks in my craw#hannibal#meta#my meta#will graham#hannibal lecter#red dragon#hannibal talk

......Sighhhhhhhh.
I can't exactly speak for the people who worked on this show, be they directors, writers, animators, storyboarders or actors (though from what I have glimpsed on Wikipedia, the transgender actor who Voiced a Transgender Character isn't happy), but I am fairly certain that everyone put their heart into their work on Win or Lose, and will probably be dismayed that some of their work isn't put into the final product. Said work might even involve a topic that they felt strongly connected to, and wanted other people to see and learn from.
But as for the corporate representatives of the Disney company, here is what I have to say to you:
You've really shown yourselves to be Cowards this year.
If your action is in response to the 2024 election, I will admit, I get the uncertainty and fear of what to do next, and how whatever one does will be received. But even if so, one should strive to, as one of your movies and previous founders said, Keep Moving Forward; to show that you won't take things lying down, and that everyone from any walk of life has a place in the world.
But if your response Isn't a reaction to what happened, then you have Really messed up this year.
Basing things off my memory, you have, Just in the year of 2024:
Let go of a good chunk of Pixar's employees, and Did Not give them any form of payment or benefits, even by the time Inside Out 2 became a smash hit.
Reveal that you attributed Lightyear's box-office failure not to external factors like streaming and where people expected to watch Pixar films, but rather to the brief LGBTQ+ kiss that was Explicitly added to the film in protest towards the lack of condemnation towards the Don't Say Gay bill back in 2022.
Use that as an excuse to watch over how the character of Riley was handled in Inside Out 2 in an effort to not have her be gay (great job handling it, Definitely didn't stop all the fan support for that idea).
Pull the plug early on shows like The Ghost and Molly McGee and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, despite the creators and crew having more seasons and episodes in mind and/or made.
Cancelling Hailey's On It! while Also removing the option to watch it on Disney+ for those who don't watch shows on cable.
Do something similar to what you have just done with Win or Lose with the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur episode "The Gatekeeper", which had a heavy focus on a trans character overcoming the barriers forcibly placed in their path.
And, perhaps the most infamous decision to come out of this year, the decision to allegedly cancel The Acolyte after the promise of another season. A decision that was made amidst a sea of raging, bigoted, hateful, Insufferable negativity! The kind of raging, Idiotic negativity that will lash out at anything, be it an actor saying the wrong character's name out of excitement for the franchise he loves (Charlie Barnett), a previously-existing minor character with little impact on the plot showing up in the show (Ki-Adi Mundi), a misunderstanding/misinterpretation of what is clearly stated or hinted at within the show (The Jedi team on Brendok realizing they were at fault), or just the mere Presence of actors and creators who are neither male, straight, or white (Leslye Headland, Amandla Stenberg). Actors and creators who you, as the company that hired them, are supposed to protect, Especially after what has happened with John Boyega, Moses Ingram and Kelly Marie Tran.
And by giving those @$$hats a win, even an unconfirmed one, you have merely given them unspoken permission to continue spreading their hatred, whether it be by continuing to make rage-bait videos to gain monetization, harassing Whoever worked on or enjoyed The Acolyte (often by repeatedly saying One Line from the entire show, or saying a Misinformed Lie about what Amandla Stenberg said years ago), or by making them think they are Above you, and can make you do whatever they want. And considering the report of superfan focus groups being used to suggest changes to some of your products, that will probably not work out well in the long run.
To sum it all up, the decisions that you have made as a company this year are just not good, especially in terms of representation for your workers, and the LGBTQ+ community. I am sure that just like the company in the 1970s and 1980s, you will eventually get out of this slump you've found yourselves in. But in order to do so, you should consider being more open with people about why you are doing what you do, and examine how you can be better towards your employees and the handling of LGBT representation.
MOTHER! FUCKING--
STOP WITH THIS "RESULTS OF ELECTION" BULLSHIT! OKAY?! Giving up how representation just because it's no longer easy is NOT okay on any means, now matter the nonsensical justifications you give it!
I...am SO fucking angry right now...

Aktuelle Besetzung
Bobby Ingram (Lead-Slide-Guitar) – als Gründungsmitglied zur Gruppe zurückgekehrt
Tim Lindsey am Bass (versunken)
Der aktuelle Leadsinger an Stelle des 2019 vertorbenen Phil McCormack und John Galvin (Keyboards – Hammond B3&BG) bei der Arbeit
Shawn Beamer am Schlagzeug (aufgewirbelt)
Flying coloured Hair

Song Review: Gary Clark Jr. - “Habits” (Live, Sept. 23, 2023)
Though Gary Clark Jr. was onstage at the Crossroads Guitar festival when on Sept. 23, 2023, he performed “Habits,” the introspective, solo-electric ballad based on a simple, repetitive riff does not betray Clark’s gargantuan six-string skills as he sings:
I’ve got habits that I just can’t break/when I think about it, I start to shake/I’ve been feelin’ like this for a while/and I always hide behind my crooked smile
The lyrics are cheesy and the sparse music is, well, boring. But don’t take Sound Bites’ word for it.
“Thanks for lettin’ me bore you for a few minutes,” Clark says as the feels-like-more-than-five-minutes track closes.
This “Habits” is out to announce the forthcoming release of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival 2023 in audio and video formats. Out Nov. 29, it features Clapton, Clark, Joe Bonamassa, Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, John Mayer, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Stephen Stills, Roger McGuinn and others.
