Song Review: Eilen Jewell - “The Pill”

Loretta Lynn sung about “The Pill” back when the titular miracle of science democratized birth control. Now, Eilen Jewell sings about “The Pill” as birth control is in real danger of being theocratized right out of existence.

“The Pill” is one of three previously unreleased tracks slated to appear on the forthcoming (Nov. 15) re-release of Jewell’s 2010 Lynn cover album, Butcher Holler.

Jewell’s version is more rock than country, but still features plenty of steel sparring with twangy six-string guitar. It’s also funked up and spicier than Lynn’s version.

And while Lynn’s 1975 original was something of a celebration, Jewell’s 2024 cover is a warning.

Heed it.

Song Review: Eilen Jewell with Jordie Lane and Clare Reynolds - “High Shelf Booze” (Live, Oct. 15, 2019)

Flanked by guest musicians Jordie Lane and Clare Reynolds, Eilen Jewell took on a different sound while sounding exactly like herself.

The date was Oct. 15, 2019; the place was Pennsylvania; and the song was “High Shelf Booze” captured on freshly released professional video.

It’s a blues shuffle with hints of country and jazz. But with Reynolds’ keys and harmony vocals and Lane playing off fellow guitarist Jerry Miller, Jewell’s number takes on a whole new set of values.

Now, Jewell and her band are perfectly stellar on their own. But it says something about them that they can integrate guests so seamlessly. And it says something about the guests that they can add so much to a fine-tuned machine without gumming up the works.
