Song Review: Eilen Jewell - “Crooked River”
When the pandemic kept her isolated and Eilen Jewell’s “life fell apart,” the singer spent a lot of time in the Idaho wilderness “trying not to spin out too much.”
She survived. And like all good singer/songwriters, she wrung music out of the experience.
After spending time on the banks of the Crooked River, Jewell wrote a tune called “Crooked River,” which announces the May 5 arrival of Get Behind the Wheel.
With a backdrop of wafting steel, steady acoustic and distorted electric guitars and rhythm section, Jewell makes subtle lyrical nods to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Lead Belly when she sings:
When I finally get myself together/I know, yes I know, it’ll be sublime/but until then, I’ll make my home down by Crooked River/and I’ll sleep beneath the shade in the pines
For the woman known as the Queen of the Minor Key, Jewell’s come up with a bright, major-key celebration of life in “Crooked River.” But fear not, fans, the other 10 cuts may very well be downers.

When the Robins were too young to convincingly pass as drivers, they'd always insist that Bruce drive them to school or anyplace they were running late to, because Bruce's extensive illegal racing experience meant they were guaranteed to make it there on time. Or even early sometimes.

i have lots of flaws but i do at least take a fair amount of comfort knowing that, if i were a customer NPC in a fast food/retail management game, i would be one of the chill early-level ones that can wait a super long time before they start getting impatient, and you breathe a sigh of a relief when you see them show up in a harder level

when people send me asks or comment on my videos about how they hate spider-man and batman crossovers im like
"hey babe... now I want you to listen with your big kid ears okay? I know that's really hard for you, but we're going to make it through this... you can just... not see those things. I know, I know! super scary new concept that you've never thought of before! don't panic! but there's this thing called filtering a tag on ao3... stay with me, stay with me! and it gives you the ability to... not see those things you don't like. I know that's amazing isn't it!!!! now let's try doing that... and while we do that I'm going to teach you what a block button is so that I don't have to hit you with a cartoon hammer for going on my page to specifically tell me how much you don't like the thing i enjoy and put my time and effort into"

the desk chair i have came with this type of wheel
Tumblr media
which are utter fucking garbage oh my god. i've had the chair around a year and a half or so and every single one is broken. they're gummed up with my long-ass curly hair and my cats hair and whatever random fibres it seems to magnetically attract where it weaves them into some sort of evil yarn ball.
the plastic is pitted to hell from where it dented/embedded random crap from running over absolutely anything that might have been on the floor and absorbing it into the shitty plastic. if you were to judge me by nothing but the state of my chair wheels, you would think i live in some kind of fucking gravel pit. i swear to you i sweep my floors.
the wheels are made of 2 plastic disks on a metal axle and i just my weight + rolling around caused about half of them to either fully pop off or to bend at an angle, meaning they DRAG horrendously and have scraped my floor to shit. it's impossible to scoot closer to my desk to sit comfortably. trying to roll anywhere just grinds the plastic horribly along the concrete floor making a noise that sounds like if you threw lego and gargoyles at a belt sander. moving in any direction is an uphill battle.
i tried a couple weeks ago pulling them off to clean them out, re-grease them, and put them back on, but some had cracked entirely, and others had turned white and deformed at the joining part from being dragged for so long.
so i ordered some of the roller blade style wheels and just now installed them and when i righted my chair and went to sit down, i yanked it like i used to have to with the old shitty wheels, but these new babies GLIDE smooth as all fuck, so what i actually did was launch my chair entirely across the room where it lost approximately 0 momentum until it slammed into my bookcases and sent my sleeping cats running for the hills through a meteor shower of novels and knickknacks.
when i put it back at my desk (it was like pushing air, oh my god??) i went to sit and just the weight of my thighs kissing the seat sent the whole chair effortlessly swimming along out of my ass's reach, nearly sending me straight to the floor. when my cat jumped up in my lap, the force of her small body moved us both.
ten outta fuckin ten, exactly what i wanted, i love these. i could probably send myself across the room with a sneeze.

Eilen Jewell at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 10, 2023
“I’ve been missing you all,” Eilen Jewell said upon taking the stage before a full house at Natalie’s Grandview. She then spent the next 100 minutes proving it.
Playing acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica and maracas and backed by matching, black-clad Johnny Sciascia on double bass, ex-husband Jason Beek on drums and harmony vocals and Jerry Miller’s electric guitar, Jewell played a cross-section of songs from her discography, covers of Loretta Lynn, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Bessie Smith numbers and made the case she should be filling spaces much bigger than the Columbus, Ohio, restaurant she visited Sept. 10.
Jewell was the star, but Miller was the brightest co-star, tossing off licks inspired those who came before; conjuring a train whistle and the Allman Brothers’ “Revival” during “Rich Man’s World” and weaving snippets of “Third Stone from the Sun,” “Paint it Black,” “Rebel, Rebel” and “Day Tripper” into Smith’s If You Catch Me Stealing.”
Such displays caused Jewell and her bandmates to look at one another with incredulous delight as Miller consistency elicited audience approval to rival that of Jewell’s across the set, heavy on tracks from 2023’s Get Behind the Wheel, and such cuts as “Crooked River,” “Winnemucca,” “Breakaway,” “Lethal Love” and “Alive.”
When she wasn’t tapping the Wheel, Jewell was taking requests - “You’re writing the setlist, so I trust you,” she said. This led to “our most ill-received song,” a political ditty known as “79 Cents (The Meow Song),” which addresses women’s unequal pay and a certain politician who wants to grab women by the kitty, and her version of “Green River,” which goes nicely with Jewell’s other CCR homage, the soundalike “Crawl.”
Jewell mixes up a batch of “Mystic”-era Van Morrison, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Lynn and others to come out sounding and singing exactly like herself. To that end, Jewell performed the latter’s “Whispering Sea” and wished she’d followed more closely in her footsteps.
“She started her career with a hit, which is genius,” Jewell said of Lynn. “I wish I’d thought of that.”
But here’s the thing. While Jewell makes good records, the self-described Queen of the Minor Key is at her best on stage.

Beth's circuit training pun feels like a happy coincidence with original Trudy's found love of race car driving. You know, like a racing circuit? Anyways, I hope she gets to run Tucker over.

Now that i think about it there are only two instances where Perry is visibly, genuinely balls grippingly terrified. And both of those times is because Heinz is driving like a man posessed
