Biography of Bro. Bobby Roberson
“Robert “Bobby” Eugene Roberson, 86, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 12, 2018. He was born in Forsyth County on August 5, 1931 to Rev. Ezra and Era Roberson who preceded him in death. He was married to Jacquelyn White Roberson for 66 years until her death in 2015. Also preceding him in death was his brother, C.E. Roberson of Walkertown.
Bobby was the beloved “Daddy” of four children, Steve Roberson (Linda), Sue Whiteheart (Jerry), Stan Roberson (Joanne), and Molly Potts (Mark); he was “PawPaw” to ten grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and “Bro. Bobby” to the members of Gospel Light Baptist Church for over 61 years. He is also survived by his brother, Ed Roberson of Kernersville; sister-in-law, Edith Roberson of Walkertown; and brother-in-law, Larry White (Sue).
Bro. Bobby was born and raised in the Kernersville area and grew up as the son of a greatly-used preacher of the gospel. He was saved at the age of 17 and called to preach two years later. Bro. Bobby pastored Dennis Baptist Church in Walnut Cove for one year. He then pastored Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown, where he faithfully ministered for over 61 years.
Bro. Bobby’s life verse was Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” During the past 61 years of his ministry at Gospel Light, thirteen building programs have been completed and paid for. The Church has a Spanish ministry that has its own property nine miles from the main Church.
His love and compassion for people drove him to begin a Bus Ministry over 50 years ago that has resulted in thousands of children and adults coming to know Christ as their Saviour. Gospel Light Christian School was started 43 years ago to teach Christian principles and values in the education of young people. Bro. Bobby also led the Church in purchasing a 139-acre camp in Hillsville, Virginia, which has been instrumental in hundreds of juniors and teens being saved or called to the ministry.
From plowing with a mule in the backfields of Kernersville to preaching behind hundreds of pulpits, Bobby Roberson never forgot his humble beginnings. Even after receiving five honorary degrees and having Crown College name their School of Pastoral Ministry after him, he remained “Bro. Bobby” to all who knew him. He loved the saying “Honorary degrees are like a curl on a pig’s tail, it does not provide any more ham!”
Bobby Roberson was an old-fashioned, independent, fundamental Baptist preacher. He preached faithfully out of the King James Version of the Bible, firmly believing it was the inspired Word of God. He never wavered from his conviction that Christians should be a witness for Christ everywhere.
He leaves a legacy hard to surpass and one he never strived to attain. Bro. Bobby’s greatest desire was to leave behind a good name and be a faithful servant to his Lord.
His family, his congregation, and his many friends can truly say he did leave a good name and he was faithful to the Lord. It could be said of him, like the Apostle Paul in II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
A funeral service to celebrate Bro. Bobby’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Gospel Light Baptist Church. Entombment will follow the service in the church cemetery.”

More book recs!
Apologies to the people who want movies and movies only, but I’ve been reading more than watching movies lately so I thought I’d share regardless. (Also reading is fun!)
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Warnings/Notes: 😢 ☠ Summary: Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath. Recommend?: Yes Why: Everyone has probably heard of this one already, and as sad and tragic as the ending is, I personally think the softness and (very latent) growth that the characters undergo is beautiful. I think the empathy afforded to them and the entire situation of the Trojan War is really well done, and it offers us a better version of events that aren’t so violent against women for no reason (homer sux pass it on). If you’re into Greek mythology, Miller knows her stuff and this will be a fun, quick read.
Lie With Me by Philippe Besson
Warnings/Notes: 😢 ☠ 🏳️🌈 Summary: The award-winning, bestselling French novel by Philippe Besson about an affair between two teenage boys in 1984 France, translated with subtle beauty and haunting lyricism by the iconic and internationally acclaimed actress/writer Molly Ringwald. Recommend?: Yes Why: As much as I dislike tragic endings in gay books (in fact usually I rage about it bc it’s so boring and stupid) this one really got me. First of all it’s heavily implied by the author that the story is autobiographical, so it’s hard to get mad at a real series of events. Second, the tragedy is treated with deeper empathy than I’ve ever seen it. Even when the protagonists do things to hurt the other or make bad decisions, it’s so clear why they’re doing it, and all you feel is what they’re feeling. Short and well written.
The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg
Warnings/Notes: 👊🏼 🏳️🌈 Summary: Over the course of one summer, two boys will have to face their biggest fears and decide what they're willing to risk -- to get the thing they want the most. Recommend?: Yes Why: I was challenging myself to read more YA this year and I think I finished this book in a single sitting. I usually find a lot of queer YA problematic but this one was really good! It avoided a lot of romance tropes which I greatly appreciated. It breaks the mold of what you’d expect from these character archetypes and handles heavy issues like parental neglect/abuse and sexual assault with surprising empathy and also without a heaviness that would drag the narrative down. There were times the dialogue made me gag but it’s for kids and overall a fun read.
Lot by Bryan Washington
Warnings/Notes: 🚫🏳️🌈 Summary: Stories of a young man finding his place among family and community in Houston, from a powerful, emerging American voice. Recommend?: Sort of? Why: This is a collection of short stories surrounding characters in a particular neighborhood of Houston, with one character who is revisited every other chapter. The prose is solid and the voices are engaging, if not repetitive. I found it to be a little bit of a slog to get through considering how short it is, mostly because the characters never seem to grow and all have very similar perspectives. It’s all very ~vibey. However, a lot of people like vibey so if you do, then this is for you!
We Contain Multitudes by Sarah Henstra
Warnings/Notes: 👊🏼 🚫 Summary: Jonathan Hopkirk and Adam "Kurl" Kurlansky are partnered in English class, writing letters to one another in a weekly pen pal assignment. With each letter, the two begin to develop a friendship that eventually grows into love. But with homophobia, bullying, and devastating family secrets, Jonathan and Kurl struggle to overcome their conflicts and hold onto their relationship...and each other. Recommend?: No Why: This is one of those problematic YA books I talked about earlier. It’s a little on the longer side but I also read it in one sitting. To begin with, there’s a large-ish age difference between the main characters for seemingly no reason, pairing a 19-year-old with a 15 year old (which in high school is a large inequity). I found the voices a little unbearable and the epistolary format felt extremely contrived throughout. There’s a lot of completely unnecessary conflicts and leans in to unhealthy romance tropes rather than putting anything fresh on it. At times I flat out didn’t want the characters to get together because their whole dynamic was so unsettling. Also, the shoe-horned family drama side-plot was unengaging and forced. Also I think the author is straight so I’m not that surprised lmao.
Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story by Jacob Tobia
Warnings/Notes: ⓣ 🚫 🏳️🌈 Summary: A heart-wrenching, eye-opening, and giggle-inducing memoir about what it's like to grow up not sure if you're (a) a boy, (b) a girl, (c) something in between, or (d) all of the above. Recommend?: Yes (with conditions) Why: This book is a memoir written by a 27 (?) year-old, so that’s something to keep in mind. It’s fairly long considering how short of a time period is covered, but overall this book would be a great tool for young readers. The prose is written a lot like a twitter thread too, which younger audiences will find more palatable than I. You 'll probably be left with more questions than you started with if you’re a complete newbie to non-binary identities and trans people, but it’s a good place to start.
Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry by Imani Perry
Warnings/Notes: ☠ Summary: Lorraine Hansberry, who died at thirty-four, was by all accounts a force of nature. Although best-known for her work A Raisin in the Sun, her short life was full of extraordinary experiences and achievements, and she had an unflinching commitment to social justice, which brought her under FBI surveillance when she was barely in her twenties. While her close friends and contemporaries, like James Baldwin and Nina Simone, have been rightly celebrated, her story has been diminished and relegated to one work—until now. Recommend?: No Why: To be honest, I couldn’t finish this book. It’s not long at all but it felt like it was written in another language, so, it reads very slow. Lorraine Hansberry herself is very interesting and I would love to read a biography about her, but not one that focuses just as much on the biographer as the subject. Also, if you don’t have an in-depth college-level knowledge of american literary history you’ll likely have a hard time keeping up with the cast of characters.
Anyway that’s it! Happy queer reading!

Evidence of Faith: According to her biography on the website Glamour Girls Of The Silver Screen, it states that she was brought up as Catholic & that when she was a child, she spent 11 years in Catholic school (or “convent school”, as they call it). As she reflects on her education, she says “The nuns didn't have too much success with me – I've always had a violent temper. In fact, once I almost killed one of the nuns.” I think the less we know about that story, the better!

Severus Weasley, part 4
- the rest of the summer passed relatively uneventfully. Severus helped Molly around the house, played games with Bill and Charlie and finished the homework he’d neglected.
- the two weeks before he was due at King’s Cross to start his sixth year, Molly made him stand on a stool in the living room and measured him for new robes. “You’ve grown at least two inches this summer, Severus,” she commented as she read the mark on the tape measure. She turned away and he jumped as the tape measure went around his waist. “Oh, and you’ve put on some weight, marvellous dear.”
- Severus felt very self-conscious about all this, particularly when Molly declared that they’d just have to get him some new robes. “It’s okay, you can just...let out mine.”
- “Nonsense dear.” Molly examined the contents of her handbag. “You need some new ones, and we’d better pick up your NEWT books as well while we’re out.”
- so very shortly afterwards, Severus found himself in Diagon Alley being shepherded along by Molly Weasley. She took him to Madam Malkin’s and again he found himself standing on a stool being measured. He’d never had new robes before.
- Molly also bought him new socks and underwear...which he found incredibly embarrassing.
- after that was done, they went to a second-hand bookshop Severus was very familiar with. He browsed the shelves while Molly handed his school book list to the shop assistant. He found an interesting looking biography on a curse-breaker and a picture book on dragons. He carefully counted out the little bit of money he had and Molly raised an eyebrow at him. He blushed slightly as he handed over the money.
- “Now, how about some ice cream?” Molly asked him as she shrunk their packages and fitted them into her handbag. Severus nodded an enthusiastic yes and they headed off to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour.
- Molly bought herself a knickerbocker glory while Severus went for a vanilla ice cream drenched in hot caramel sauce. He was half-way through when he spotted James Potter across the square. Molly noticed the change in him and asked him what was wrong. He told her just ate a bit too quick, it was nothing but she had also spotted James Potter. “Is that one of the boys who has been tormenting you?”
- Severus squirmed slightly in his seat.
- “Right.” standing, Molly walked over to where James was standing with his parents browsing the window of a nearby shop. Severus slid down in his seat and tried to disappear. Ten minutes later, Molly came back. “He won’t be bothering you any more.”
- “Thank you.” he squeaked, embarrassed and feeling awkward.

kind of a song rec? really just the album "pray for the wicked" by p!atd seems to fit for the nein really well: one of the drunks for nott, king of the clouds for yasha, hey look ma i made it & high hopes for caleb. anyway yeah this whole song collecting project is super cool :)
I haven’t listened to that album in full BUT you’ll be happy to know that two songs from it (different than the ones you said!) have both been rec’d — Dying in LA and Roaring 20s, both for Molly. Also, thank you! :)
The chorus of One of the Drunks is VERY good for Nott:
“This is what it feels like when you become one of the drunksSearching for a new high, high as the sun, uncomfortably numb”
Just that whole idea of becoming something you maybe looked down on, and using alcohol to cope with it.
King of the Clouds feels appropriate for the numbness that I think Yasha probably feels at times — endlessly “searching” for what the Stormlord wants her to do:
“I don't trust anything/ Or anyone, below the sun/ I don't feel anything”
And then, of course, the cloud/storm imagery :D
Is Hey Look Ma I Made It a darkly sarcastic Caleb song or an ironic Bren song? Either way, it hurts!!!!!!
“Hey look ma, I made it/ Everything's comin' up aces, aces/ If it's a dream, don't wake me”
.............
Anyhow, High Hopes also hurts!!
“Manifest destiny, back in the days/ We wanted everything, wanted everything/ Mama said, burn your biographies/ Rewrite your history, light up your wildest dreams”
Feels like a very determined Caleb looking back of his Academy days and knowing he has to change history.
Come yell at me about the songs that remind you of Critical Role! I’m making a giant playlist! (Song masterpost | CR music tag)

The D.A. has recruited Taylor to the character of Ginny Weasley with a faceclaim of Luca Hollestelle. Picking a fight there, Ginny? Or are you still fighting yourself after second year?
OOC Details
Name: Taylor
Pronouns: She/Her
Activity Level: Moderate. I have a fulltime job and commitments, but I think I’ll be able to post a few times a week.
Acknowledgement: I acknowledge that the themes of this game may include triggering elements. I also acknowledge that my character may be harmed or even killed during paras/events or may cause harm to or kill others during paras/events through the violence roulette.
General IC Details
Name: Ginevra “Ginny” Molly Weasley
Age: 16
Ships: Ginny is still in love with Harry at this point, but she believes in him and has let him go to do what he has to do. It’s also not her main concern, as right now there are more important things on the table then whether or not she’s in a relationship. But I believe that Ginny’s sexuality is Bisexual, or Heteroflexible as she hasn’t really thought about it a whole lot (besides when she’s looking through Witch Weekly and there’s a picture of Gwenog Jones).
Gender/Pronouns: She/Her
Face Claim: Luca Hollestelle
Desired Changes: Not a whole lot at the moment, just excited to explore her character more in-depth!

BIO Questions
Biography:
Growing up, Ginny’s life was ordinary. Well as ordinary as it could be for a lower-income wizarding family of nine, in which she was only special because of her gender. It was a novelty, being the only girl in a gaggle of vivid ginger boys, whom all had a booming personality that internally struggled to shine amongst each other. That being said, Ginny’s childhood was happy. Loving parents who had come out of the first war with themselves intact and enough love to go around their large lot. One by one, all of Ginny’s brothers turned of age to attend school, making the months between September and May lonelier, until it was only her and Ron. It was due to this that she had grown a kinship with the boy who was only a year older. Mud puddles and pretend, debating whether the Harpies or the Cannons were the superior team (obviously the Harpies!). That is until Ron turned eleven and everything changed. Harry Potter returned to the wizarding world, and invaded their lives as Ron Weasley’s best mate.
It was safe to say that Ginny was immediately infatuated. The first celebrity she’d ever had the pleasure of meeting with just a simple smile at King’s Cross, followed by a lonely year alone. It was spent mostly using the Bill’s old broom he’d left behind in the shed to practice quidditch and counting down the days until she was at Hogwarts with her brothers, making friends, and chatting with the Boy Who Lived.
Except that wasn’t what happened. Ron had moved on, found a kinship with Harry and Hermione that didn’t have room for her, and instead she was left to figure it out on her own. But she wasn’t alone. No, she had found a friend in a book, only a week before school and he had twisted it’s grip into her heart and fed on all of her insecurities. Isolating her from those that were her age, with every heartfelt secret she gave him, the more pull Tom Riddle had until he was finally controlling her completely. It was truly terrifying. Missing moments, blood on her hands, her peers turning up petrified as a villain whispered in her ear. How was it that someone could tear a person apart while still making them feel like he was the only one that understood or cared? A master manipulator, it took her months before Ginny tried to get rid of the diary. At first she suspected she was going mad, but it had fallen into Harry’s possession and in her first act of Gryffindor bravery, she had to steal it back.
But regaining the diary simply gave Tom her power again, allowing him to use her as a pawn to draw the “Boy Who Supposedly Destroyed Voldemort” into the Chamber. It was her life-force that almost brought Tom Riddle back into his youth, but when she awoke she was free. Free to confess to Harry what had been going on for all those months, and it was with him she returned from the chamber.
After Tom, she was left to pick up the pieces. Over the years she found a friend in Hermione, who urged her to be herself. In Neville, who accompanied her to the Yule Ball just so she could take part, and in Luna, who was intuitive and open-minded. She dated people who saw her as more than just another Weasley and killed it on the quidditch pitch after all those years practicing alone. Dark times arrived, Ginny stepped up, becoming one of the original members of Dumbledore’s Army and even helping to suggest it’s infamous name. Rebellion is in her blood after all, and when Harry, Ron and Hermione planned to flee for the Ministry in order to save Sirius, she fought to follow along.
It was as if she was finally being seen. Not only by her family and peers, but after that by Harry as well. She could feel his gaze when she entered a room, heard it in his laugh that his heart was a little lighter when they smiled about the same stupid thing. She knew that that she didn’t know everything, and that peace wouldn’t last, but when he caught her in his arms that day in the common room and kissed her in front of everyone Ginny felt like she might explode with happiness. Finally she was out of her shell, absolutely vibrant and it had gotten her what she wanted all those years ago.
And yet their relationship was short lived, not because they didn’t want one another, but because duty called. Dumbledore left Harry a nearly impossible mission and the world fully knew the danger that was about to embark. Her eldest brother’s wedding proved that, as chaos reigned on Bill and Fleur’s guests. Another reminder that they were at war, as Ron and his friends left without a word. Ginny left to pick up the pieces once again.
School Year So Far:
The train back to Hogwarts was morose. Luna with her head in the Quibbler, sat tightly next to Ginny who’s feet were up on the bench across from her and pressed against Neville’s leg, whose leg was between both of Luna’s on the floor between them. The three in an ever-sturdy triangle, as if proximity was safety, without even acknowledging it. It wasn’t broken until the Death Eater’s started patrol, and barged into the cabin where they were met with Neville standing quickly, and Ginny’s wand out at the ready. An early introduction to the tenseness that would follow. It was that night that the DA held their first meeting, calling all members whom still had their coins to the Room of Requirement.
With Neville and Luna, Ginny easily fells into the position of muscle. Maybe it was growing up with all those brothers. Curse-breaker Bill, Fearless Charlie, Meticulous Percy, Devious Fred and George, and Fiercely Loyal Ron, have taught her to be a Ruthless Protector. Picking fights in hallways when someone was unjustly treated, planning missions for breaking into the Headmaster’s office to steal back the sword of Gryffindor. Blood, sweat and tears were key ingredients in the first term. Even during winter break, in the soft calm of Grimmauld Place she could still hear the screams of her peers under the cruciatus curse. Part of Ginny feared going home for the holidays, worried that there will be no one to keep the DA in line, or protect them from the Carrows, but Molly would hear none of the complaints and Ginny couldn’t help but ache for her family. Surprisingly, it’s Arthur who suggested Ginny stay home for the second term though, but even her father can’t talk her into staying in the safety of her parent’s arms. No, this is her battle, this is her school. Her fight and she intends to see it through.
The fire in her belly was only fuelled further on the second train-ride back to Hogwarts that school year, when Luna is ripped away from her. A curse catching her off guard, and all she could do was watch as Luna was whisked away against her will. Ginny only let Neville see her cry that night, with the fear that they would never see their friend again.

Open Themes (Optional)
I am open to the possibility of applying for one of these later. At the moment, I really want to flesh out how Ginny processes her past in this new and harsh environment.
OOC Questions
Writing Sample
(I hope it’s okay if I have Crabbe/Goyle as NPC’s in this para sample! Though let’s be real I’d die of happiness if someone played them!) ADMIN NOTE: likewise!
There is a pit in her stomach that hasn’t been around since she was younger. And not just any cramp, that might be from nervousness of a big match, or the butterflies that rise with the glimpse of green eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. No, this was a deep seeded darkness, the kind that threatened in the shadows and spread through her bones like ice.
Ginny knows it’s different though.
Repeats it to herself over and over that she wasn’t going to lose control. That the Carrows, while vile and evil in their own twisted way, were not Tom. They weren’t, and he was gone. Sure, You-Know-Who is at large and a threat as real as ever, but he isn’t the same handsome face that had lulled a young girl to do his bidding. There was no one on Earth who could scare her quite like Tom, who had taken her consent, her mind and her will. He had left permanent scars.
That didn’t change the fact though that the hall of Hogwarts were once again eerie, the redhead on constant alert, her hand almost always inches from her wand. Not that it was required. She couldn’t help the pride that rose whenever she won a draw with her quick reflexes. She had caught the winning snitch after all. It seemed like years, and yet it had only been months since she’d been on that high. Her house cheering her name as they stormed back through the castle (it had felt so much more like home then), when Harry had kissed her and for some reason deep down she had known he was going too.
No, it all feels like a dream now as she wanders the halls on edge. Even though it was between classes, the route to Potions is much less crowded than it had ever been before and turning the corner is when she stops. There stood Crabbe (or was it Goyle? She had never bothered to learn the difference since they were never in her classes) cornering a youngin’ who couldn’t be older than thirteen. Some poor sod who’d stumbled upon the wrong place at the wrong time, back to the wall and wide-eyed. It was safe to say without Malfoy’s orders, the pair of lackeys had somehow grown braver on their own and Ginny couldn’t help walk quicker towards him (though the nagging voice in her head that sounded like her mother kept telling her to stop).
“Oi, Orge-face!” She bellows, looking and sounding more like her brother Ron with every passing day. Her wand is already out when he turns towards her, much larger than herself, but there’s an angry burn inside of her that wants to make someone else just as mad as she is. “I’d say pick on someone your own size, but then we’d have to find a troll.”
Exploration
I want Silver Trio stuff! Neville and Luna are so important to Ginny, as her family and her character development. I absolutely adore how much Ginny loves them and the little canon things that show this, and can’t wait to play it out with them not just being buddies now, but a team. They’re the heart of the DA, and I think they take that so incredibly seriously. Not to mention I want to do the mission where they try to break into Snape’s office!
Anything with the Weasleys. I love the sibling relationship between Ginny and her brothers.
Ginny’s PTSD. She was possessed for an entire school year, that’s not something a person can just get over. Ginny hides it well, even in the same year it happened it’s mentioned that she appears calmer and more content. I think a coping mechanism has been for her to brush it under the rug over the years and focus on other things. I think it was even a reason she trained so hard at Quidditch (working out improves endorphins/gives her something to focus on and exhausts herself so she can sleep). So I think it’s been forgotten by a lot of people, and Ginny tends to promote that with her own behaviour towards it. With the Carrows taking over though, I can see it stirring up everything she’s repressed over the years and really triggers her nightmares and fight-before-flight reactions. She doesn’t react in the same way others do.
Her struggle as a leader, and how the people in her life still see her as the “little sister” or the youngest family member. Even the Golden Trio have always pegged Ginny as a step under them (her having to fight to go to the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix). It will be a power struggle when those people show up and treat her like they always have while she’s been at the head of the DA this year. In canon she’s been fighting this war the entire year, but when the Battle of Hogwarts happen, both her mom and Harry say she’s too young. She’s the second in command of the DA, the muscle, and suddenly there are people telling her she’s not up to the challenge. It’s something that she truly hates and is going to try to establish some dominance for.

Genre: Comedy Director: John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein Stars: Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Michael Cyril Creighton, Jesse Plemons, Kylie Bunbury, Lamorne Morris Recommendation: I’m not keen on a lot of Bateman films, but this one seems pretty decent. Little Richard: Rock and Roll Legend Died at the Age of 87
Little Richard, best known as Little Richard, who mixed the black church's sacred yells with the profane blues sounds to make some of the world's first and most influential rock 'n' roll songs, died in Tullahoma, Tenn, Saturday morning. He was 87. His lawyer, Bill Sobel, has said bone cancer was the cause. Little Richard never invented rock 'n' roll. By the time he released his first single, "Tutti Frutti" — a raucous song about sex, his lyrics cleaned up but its sense was hard to miss — other musicians had already found a similar vein in a New Orleans recording studio in September 1955. Chuck Berry and Fats Domino had reached the top 10 of the rock, Bo Diddley had topped the rhythm and blues charts, and for a year Elvis Presley had made hits. But Little Richard, delving deeply into the wellsprings of gospel music and the blues, pounding the piano vigorously and shouting as if for his own life, lifted the energy level to many notches and produced something not quite like any music that had been heard before — something fresh, exciting and more than a little dangerous. As Richie Unterberger the rock historian put it, “He was crucial in upping the voltage from high-powered R&B into the similar, yet different, guise of rock ’n’ roll.”
The label for which he released his greatest hits, Art Rupe of Specialty Music, named Little Richard "dynamic, completely uninhibited, unpredictable, wild." "Tutti Frutti" rocked up the charts and was soon followed by "Long Tall Sally" and other music now known as classics. His live performances were so amazing. "He would just burst out from anywhere onto the stage and you could not hear anything but the audience's roar," record producer and arranger H.B. Barnum, who played a saxophone early on in his career with Richard Penniman, recalled Charles White's authorized biography in "The Life and Times of Little Richard" (1984). "He would be on stage, he would be off stage, he would be jumping and yelling, screaming, whipping the audience on." An Immense Impact Rock 'n' roll was in its early days an unabashed macho music, but Little Richard, who had performed in drag as a teenager, posed a very different image on stage: gaudily dressed, his hair piled up six inches high, his face aglow with cinematic makeup. In later years he was fond of suggesting that if Elvis were the king of rock 'n' roll, he was the queen. He described himself as homosexual, bisexual and "omnisexual" in different ways offstage. His success as an artist was incalculable. It could be seen and heard in James Brown's flamboyant showmanship, who idolized him (and used some of his musicians when Little Richard began a long hiatus from performing in 1957), and in Prince, whose ambisexual image owed him a great debt. Presley has captured songs from him. A octave-leaping exultation, the Beatles adopted his signature sound: "Woooo! "(Paul McCartney said the first song he ever performed in public was" Long Tall Sally, "which he later recorded with the Beatles.) In his yearbook for high school, Bob Dylan wrote that his dream was to" join Little Richard. The impact of Little Richard was very social as well.
Mr. White quoted him as saying, “I’ve always thought that rock ’n’ roll brought the races together.” “Especially being from the South, where you see the barriers, having all these people who we thought hated us showing all this love.” Mr. Barnum told Mr. White that when Little Richard sang, "they still had the audience segregated" at concerts in the South in those days, but that, “most times, before the end of the night, they would all be mixed together.” If uniting black and white audiences was Little Richard's point of pride, it was a source of concern for many, particularly in the South. The North Alabama White Citizens Council released a rock 'n' roll denunciation primarily because it put "people of both races together." And with several radio stations under pressure to keep black music off the air, Pat Boone's clean-up, toned-down version of "Tutti Frutti" was a bigger success than the original Little Richard. (He even had a "Long Tall Sally" hit) Still, it seemed like nothing could hinder Little Richard's rise to the top, until he himself stopped it. He was at the height of his fame when, in late September 1957, he left the United States to begin a tour of Australia. He was tired as he told the story, under constant pressure from the Internal Revenue Service and angry at the low rate of royalties he earned from Specialty. He had signed a deal, without anybody to inform him, which gave him half a cent for every record he sold. "Tutti Frutti" sold half a million copies but only netted $25,000 for him. One night in early October, he had an epiphany in front of 40,000 fans at an outdoor Sydney arena. "Russia sent that very first Sputnik off that night," he told Mr White, referring to the first satellite that had been sent into orbit. "It looked like the huge ball of fire was going straight over the stadium about two or three hundred feet above our heads. It made my mind shake. It just made my head shake. I got up from the piano, saying, "This is it. I am through. He had one last Top 10 hit: "Good Golly Miss Molly," recorded in 1956 but not released until the beginning of 1958. At the time he had left behind a rock 'n' roll.
He was an evangelist on the run. He went into Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) to prepare for the ministry in Huntsville, Ala., a Seventh-day Adventist church. He cut his hair, married and began gospel music recording. He will be torn between pulpit gravity and stage pull for the remainder of his life. “Although I sing rock ’n’ roll, God still loves me,” he said in 2009. “I’m a rock ’n’ roll singer, but I’m still a Christian.” In 1962, he was drawn back to the stage and he performed for wild acclaim in England, Germany and France over the next two years. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were among his opening acts, and then at the beginning of their careers. He went on to tour the United States relentlessly, with a band that included Jimi Hendrix on guitar at one time. By the late 1960s, sold-out performances in Las Vegas and triumphant appearances at Atlantic City and Toronto rock festivals were sending out a clear message: Little Richard was back to stay. ‘I Lost My Reasoning’ Alcohol and cocaine began to drain his soul by his own account ("I lost my reasoning," he would later say), and in 1977 he turned from rock 'n' roll to God once again. He became a Bible salesman, started making worship songs again and vanished from the spotlight for the second time. He is not staying away forever. His biography was released in 1984 and marked his return to the public eye, and he started performing again. By now he was as much a musician as he was a personality. He played a prominent role as a record producer in the hit movie "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" by Paul Mazursky in 1986. He appeared on television on talk shows, variety, comedy, and awards shows. He worked at celebrity weddings, and performed at funerals for celebrities. In concert he could still uplift the roof. He stole the spotlight at a rock 'n' roll revival concert in London's Wembley Arena, in December 1992. "Today, I am 60," he told the crowd, "and I still look remarkable." He proceeded to look incredible — with the aid of wigs and heavy pancake makeup as he flew intermittently into the 21st century. But in the end, age took its tool. He walked onstage with the assistance of two canes by 2007. In 2012, he suddenly ended a show at Washington's Howard Theater, telling the audience, "I cannot breathe hard." A year later, he told Rolling Stone magazine that he was retiring. "In a sense I am done," he said. "There is nothing I feel like doing right now." Survivors include a friend, Danny Jones Penniman. Full survivor information was not immediately available.
Raised in Macon, Ga., on 5 Dec. 1932, Richard Wayne Penniman was the third of 12 children born to Charles and Leva Mae (Stewart) Penniman. His father was a brick mason on the road, selling moonshine. An uncle, a brother, and a grandfather were preachers, and as a child he attended churches of the Seventh-day Adventist, Baptist, and Holiness, and aspired to be an evangelist artist. An early influence was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a gospel singer and guitarist, one of the first artists to blend a religious message with the intensity of R&B. Richard's ambition had taken a detour by the time he was at his teens. He left home and started performing in traveling medicine and minstrel shows, part of a dying-out 19th-century tradition. Billed as Little Richard by 1948—the name was a nod to his youth and not to his physical stature — he was a cross-dressing actor with a minstrel troupe named Sugarfoot Sam From Alabam that had been performing for decades. He recorded his first songs in 1951, while performing alongside strippers, comics and drag queens on Atlanta's Decatur Street strip. The songs, without distinct style, were generic R&B, and attracted almost no attention. He encountered two performers during this time whose look and sound alone would have a profound impact: Billy Wright and S.Q. Reeder, who has performed as Esquerita and recorded it. Both of them were professional pianists, glamorous dressers, flamboyant entertainers and as openly gay as it was possible in the 1950s to be in the South. Richard Penniman acknowledged his debt to Esquerita, who he said gave him some tips for playing the piano, and to Mr. Wright, whom he once called "the most fantastic entertainer I have ever seen." However much he borrowed from either man, the music or persona that emerged were his own. His break came when Mr. Rupe signed him to Specialty in 1955, and arranged for him to record with local New Orleans musicians. He began singing a raucous yet obscene song during a break at that session which Mr. Rupe thought could attract the burgeoning teenage record-buying audience. Mr. Rupe hired Dorothy LaBostrie, a New Orleans songwriter, to clean up the lyrics; the song became "Tutti Frutti"; and a rock 'n' roll star was born. By the time he finished playing, Little Richard was a recipient of lifetime achievement awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (he was inducted in the Hall's first year) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2010, "Tutti Frutti" was added to the National Register of Congress Library. If Little Richard ever thought he had deserved all the honors he got, he would never admit it. "Many people call me the rock 'n' roll architect," he said one time. "I do not call that to myself, but I think it is true."
