Okay, here it is: my favorite bind to date! A Great and Gruesome Height by mokuyoubi wasn’t my first Hannigram fic, but it is my favorite so far, and I knew this book deserved something special! This bind needed drama, so I reached out to a fellow binder to collaborate and was THRILLED that the incredibly talented @/ferns.and.fables on Instagram agreed to design this stunning dust jacket with character art by @miasmatik! The case is covered in maroon book cloth with multi layered HTV details. The endpapers are also by miasmatik and I love how macabre and gorgeous they are! I am really obsessed with how this turned out! It truly is this bright—it’s not just the editing! 🤣

Happy Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day!!!

For FFWAD, Renegade Bindery runs an event where we bind copies of fics for their authors, and I was super excited to participate and help mod for the event this year.

I had the great pleasure of binding A Great and Gruesome Height for @moku-youbi this year. I had initially bound a copy for myself sometime last year, but had done so in the early days of my fanbinding experience and oh boy, there were so so many flaws with the construction of that book.

I was so excited to be able to update it and make a nicer, fancier copy for the author.

I decided to go with colibri graphite instead of white this time - i had a terrible experience with the white cloth and I was very excited to do this version entirely in black. For the usage of the thread design on the cover - i used a thinner, less waxed linen thread this time and kept up the tension of the thread as I was stitching the design on the cover, and it looks much better now.

I have also gotten significantly better at doing endbands - and the crowning glory of this bind are its venomous snake endbands (not entirely intentional, but I AM GOING WITH THE VIBES WITH THIS ONE). they look really fucking great with this bind, I love them so so much. I used Crepaldi endpapers from hollanders (with a design that felt very reminiscent of a blood film so i was very excited to use it) and I foiled some of the chapter headings for the additional added-on fics at the end.

All in all, I think the bind turned out well and i faffed about minimally with it, so I was proud to be able to give this copy to an author as an example of my work. I was definitely very thrilled that the author enjoyed the copy and as always, I am absolutely enthused to be able to preserve someone's beautifully written work in a physical form.

To follow up on the anon question about soulmates, Janet does think she's in The Good Place at least for the majority of the series so far, and she goes along with discussion of soul mates, so I think that confirms it. Granted I haven't yet seen the most recent episode, so maybe things change, but it seems like they've done the minimum amount of tampering with her as possible

Oooh good point!!! I agree, it doesn’t seem like they messed with Janet too much, I don’t really think she *can* be tampered with. Deceived maybe, but it doesn’t look like they can change her personality or make her do what they want. If they could they would have to make their jobs easier!

This is a favorite argument of the brand of Hannibal/Clarice shipper that tends to start this sort of discourse tbh. It’s fascinating and sad and hilarious all at the same time. Like let’s all at least be honest with ourselves here and admit that none of these relationships are ~healthy and no one is better than anyone else and it’s fiction ffs just chill and let people like the things that they like.

when you are powering through a fic with too much exposition and an insanely bad premise but the syntax is pretty good and you're just like... please... just get to the sex... and then when the fucking starts the POV suddenly shifts to first person with choppy, erratic "inner monologue" sentences

I really disliked her making Dumbledore gay because it played so much into the “evil gay” stereotype. Yeah, I know, he is the leader of the light, of the resistance, but especially in the last two books as Harry matures he is made out to be a much more morally grey character then before - he is incredibly manipulative and emotionally distant (it requires a stone-cold person to concsiously raise a child for a single purpose of being killed one day, no matter whether there is a prophecy of his goddamn greater good at play - a person with a healthy sense of empathy wouldn’t be able to do it), at least in his youth he was himself flirting with the ideas of wizards’ supremacy and blood purity, and only the death of his sister managed to get him to break with Gellert Grindelwald’s ideas - until it became personal for him, he was very much on board with that and actually appeared to be the driving force (though that might be Skeeter’s writing, who also implies that he himself construed the situation in which Ariana was killed, even if it wasn’t him pointing a wand at her). So, just because he broke with Gellert, I am not all that sure that he broke with the ideology.

I remember that at the time a lot more people were invested in Snape being gay, especially considering how heavily gay-coded he was throughout the books (I am not even sure it is possible at this point to avoid gay-coding villains and quasi-villains, when pretty much every one of them is written this way - how do you write a character organically and avoid falling into some damn gay-coded cliche here or there?), but in retrospect he would have been just as awful a choice.

I would rather have had a lesbian icon McGonagall than a gay headmaster Dumbledore.

What I’m about to say is going to sound really stupid but. Didn’t JKR say Dumbledore was gay? Why would you say that, and then say something transphobic? If you don’t support trans people, why would you have a gay character? (I know they aren’t the same thing). Was that Dumbledore thing just for clout then? If you don’t support trans people, what the fuck gives you the right to have a gay character? (I’m sorry if this sounds dumb, I just woke up and saw all of this. Wtf JKR)

Truth is, I don’t know why JKR decided to make Dumbledore gay. Maybe it was for the clout. Maybe she genuinely thought she was being progressive. Maybe people headcanoned him as gay and she decided what the hell let’s make that canon.

Even if she hadn’t made Dumbledore a poor portrayal of a gay man (which is a whole other can of worms), that doesn’t have anything to do with her being transphobic. Even actual gay people can be transphobic.
